all experience major fluctuations in the levels of 

androgens (a group of sex hormones) during times 

such as: 

- puberty 

- stress 

- pregnancy 

- menopause 

It is during these times, that excessive levels of 

androgens “switch on” stem cells in the skin - 

et voila, new unwanted hairs emerge! 

Unfortunately sufferers of a condition called Polycystic 

Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can attest to this. Of those 

affected by this condition, approximately 70% 

experience unwanted hair growth on the face and 

chest. 

In short, knowing that we are able to permanently 

remove these troublesome hairs altogether is a 

powerful feeling, especially given the emotional 

and mental stress accompanied with constantly 

maintainance.

Scouts grow as 

demand for 

volunteers rises 

The number of Scouts in Buckinghamshire 

has grown by over 6% since January 2022, 

with boys and girls aged 4 to 17 joining. 

As demand increases across the five sections— 

Squirrels (ages 4-5), Beavers (ages 6-8), Cubs 

(ages 8-10), Scouts (ages 10-14), and Explorers 

(ages 14-17)—more volunteers are needed. 

Adults can help directly with the children or 

take on behind-the-scenes roles like trustee, 

administrator, fundraiser, or IT support. 

Scouts offers over 250 activities, from abseiling 

to zorbing, helping children develop teamwork, 

confidence, and problem-solving skills. Cub 

Scout Lola shared her weekend experience, 

including climbing, kayaking, and making 

s’mores, calling it “ace.” 

Volunteer Nigel highlighted the need for more 

helpers, saying over 500 children are waiting 

to join. “Volunteering with Scouts is flexible,” 

he said, noting that roles can fit any schedule, 

with training available. Volunteers can make 

new friends, learn skills, and take pride in seeing 

children achieve things they didn’t think possible. 

Nigel added, “Volunteering gives you a sense of 

purpose and satisfaction.”

Silver Sunday - a 

day to celebrate 

older people 

Over 70 local elderly residents enjoyed 

a wonderful day on Sunday, 6th 

October in Amersham, for Silver Sunday! 

They were treated to an afternoon of 

entertainment courtesy of The Bedfordshire 

Branch of the Royal British Legion Brass Band 

and local singer Nikki Fisher, with food and drinks 

provided by a large number of local volunteers. 

The event was organized by Councillor Mimi 

Harker, who has been running this event locally 

for the past 14 years. 

Silver Sunday was launched in 2012 as an 

initiative to overcome loneliness and isolation 

and has now become a national event, held on 

the first Sunday of October each year. In 2023, 

over 2000 events were held across the country. 

Local residents helped make a vast number of

sandwiches, baked amazing cakes, cupcakes, 

and scones, and transformed the hall into a 

beautifully themed venue in just a few hours. 

Their “VIP” guests are sure to remember the 

event for a long time to come. A special thanks

Home Care, who were the event’s sponsors.

Skydiving for 

Scannappeal: 

A Leap of Courage, 

A Gift of Hope 

On Saturday, 28th September, seven 

brave individuals from the “Let Go and 

Skydive” team faced their fears head-on, 

leaping out of a plane in support of the 

local charity, Scannappeal. 

Blessed with perfect weather and sunshine, the 

team - BJ Tailor, Therese Cooklin, Neil Walker, 

David Brown, Rupert Cooklin, Ben Naylor-Smith, 

and Mimi Harker OBE - took on this adrenalinefilled 

challenge to make a lasting impact. 

Their skydiving adventure began with an 

exhilarating free fall from a mile and a half above 

the ground, reaching breathtaking speeds of 

120 mph within just 10 seconds. Once their 

parachutes deployed, they floated gracefully for 

another 5,000 feet, taking in the stunning views 

before making a safe landing. 

The team’s goal was to raise £10,000 for 

Scannappeal, a vital charity that supports 

life-saving medical equipment for local 

hospitals. Thanks to the incredible support from 

friends, family, the local community, businesses, 

and readers of the Together magazines, they 

surpassed this target, raising an impressive 

£11,375.64 (including Gift Aid).

result, the team’s efforts have already generated 

£22,751.28. 

But the journey doesn’t stop here. With 

continued support, there is potential to reach 

an incredible £100,000 by the end of the year -

critical spinal surgery.

What’s been happening at 

Beaconsfield Town Council? 

Thanks to everyone who attended 

our rearranged Summer on the Green 

event on 14th September. 

Luckily the weather was kind to us this time 

and we enjoyed the Burnham Concert Band, 

face painting, bubbles… both alcoholic and 

in the air! Along with delicious food, classic 

cars. A fun day out! Meanwhile in the office, 

it’s time to get down to the serious work of 

accounting. It was good news to have received 

a clean sheet on our internal and external 

audits and the autumn is time for us to start 

work on budgeting for next year. 

The council will be organising Community Litter 

picks every couple of months, so please get in 

touch if you’d like to get involved by emailing

A note from the Mayor, 

Cllr Paul Mason 

The recent government consultation 

suggesting major changes to the National 

Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) is likely to 

have a large impact on Beaconsfield. The Town 

Council has responded to the consultation 

arguing that the proposed changes go too far 

in the balance towards building new houses 

versus protecting the Green Belt and our 

environment. We hope that the government 

listens to our arguments and changes their 

approach. 

Whilst we await the government’s final 

decision, the Town Council will be enhancing 

its Biodiversity Policy to reference all land 

across the Parish, not just land owned by the 

Town Council. We will seek to catalogue all 

endangered, rare or species of particular 

importance living across our Parish with the aim 

of further protecting the land they reside on.

residents. The lack of having a Neighbourhood 

Plan means that residents will have little say 

over how they want to see the Town develop, 

especially with respect to building design and 

the type of houses needed to be built. The 

lack of a Plan also risks our Areas of Special 

Character and Local Heritage Assets which we 

had hoped to designate. It would also have 

reiterated the Town’s desire not to develop the 

Green Belt and to add additional protection to 

a number of local green spaces. 

A fond farewell to John Bull 

For many years, John Bull has been a familiar 

character around Beaconsfield as our Handy 

Man, always with a ready smile and positive 

attitude. Previously the Station Manager at 

Holtspur Fire Station. 

After 13 years at the Town Council, John has 

decided it’s time to hang up his boots and 

retire. We’ll miss you John. Go steady! 

It is unfortunate that the proposed Beaconsfield 

Neighbourhood Plan was voted down by our

Rennie Grove Peace 

Hospice Care 

Buckinghamshire-based movement 

coach, Isaac Hay, is taking his love for 

exercise up a notch and has kicked off a 

challenge to try out 100 different sports 

in a year. He is using the challenge to 

raise money for charitable causes, 

including local hospice charity, Rennie 

Grove Peace Hospice Care. 

He explains why he’s raising funds for the 

charity: “I’m supporting Rennie Grove Peace 

Hospice Care as one of my three chosen 

charities. The organisation is close to my 

heart as the nurses cared for my grandma 

before she passed. My whole family has 

supported the charity since then, so I’m really 

pleased to be able to use this challenge to 

raise funds to support vital hospice care in the 

local area.”
