BY RELUCTANT GENIUS
This month’s artist has smoked pot on the White House roof, wrote “ on the road again “ on a
barf bag, and recorded IRS tapes to pay off tax debts. He’s a living legend and on tour at 91 years
old. In fact there’s probably little in life that he hasn’t done. Like the energizer bunny ( on weed )
he just keeps going and going. Considered one of the greatest songwriters, and country musicians
of all time, here’s a little bit of history about the amazing Willie Nelson.
Nelson, born on April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas, stands as an iconic figure in American music and
culture. His journey from a small-town boy with humble beginnings to a celebrated country
music legend is marked by resilience, creativity, and a strong sense of social justice. Growing up
in a poor family, Nelson began playing music at a young age, influenced by the sounds of country,
gospel, and blues that surrounded him. He wrote his first song at the age of seven and, after
serving in the Air Force, began to pursue a career in music more seriously.
Nelson moved to Nashville in the 1960s, where he initially struggled to find his voice in the
mainstream country music scene. Frustrated with the industry's constraints, he took a different
path, embracing a more personal and authentic style that blended country, folk, and rock. This
shift led to the release of groundbreaking albums like "Shotgun Willie" (1973) and "Red Headed
Stranger" (1975), which showcased his unique sound and storytelling prowess. His music often
reflected themes of love, loss, and the struggles of everyday life, resonating deeply with audiences.
In addition to his musical achievements, Nelson has been a vocal advocate for various social and political issues. His
commitment to civil rights, environmentalism, and farmers' rights has set him apart as a socially conscious artist. In the
1980s, he co-founded Farm Aid, a benefit concert series aimed at raising awareness and funds to support struggling
American farmers. This initiative arose from his concern for the agricultural community, which was facing significant
challenges due to corporate farming practices and economic pressures. Farm Aid has raised millions of dollars and
continues to be a platform for advocating sustainable farming and rural development.
Nelson's political views extend into the realm of drug policy and marijuana legalization. A lifelong advocate for the
decriminalization of marijuana, he has been open about his own cannabis use, often referring to it as a natural and harmless
alternative to pharmaceuticals. His perspective on marijuana is rooted in a belief in personal freedom and the need to reform
outdated drug laws that disproportionately affect marginalized communities. Over the years, he has repeatedly spoken out
against the war on drugs, arguing that it has been a failure and has caused more harm than good.
In 2015, Nelson took his advocacy a step further by launching his own line of cannabis products called Willie’s Reserve,
which aims to promote high-quality, responsibly sourced marijuana. This venture not only reflects his personal beliefs but
also contributes to the growing acceptance of cannabis in American culture. Through his work, Nelson has played a
significant role in shifting public perception about marijuana, advocating for its
medicinal benefits and the importance of legal reform.
As he has matured, Nelson has become a symbol of resilience and authenticity in
the music industry. His distinctive voice, engaging performances, and heartfelt
lyrics have earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Country
Music Hall of Fame and multiple Grammy Awards. Yet, beyond his musical
accomplishments, it is his commitment to social justice and his progressive stance
on issues like marijuana legalization that have cemented his legacy as not just a
musician, but a cultural icon.
Willie Nelson's journey is a testament to the power of music as a platform for
change. His life story, rich with experiences and convictions, continues to inspire
generations of fans and activists alike, making him a beloved figure in American history and a champion for causes that
resonate deeply in today's society.
For those of you that watch SNL, now in Season 50, but are either not old enough to remember the original cast or didn't start watching until years later, the
“Not Ready for Prime Time Players” (NRFPTP), as original writer Herb Sargent called them, was much smaller & more improvisational than the slick,
established late night variety/sketch show that airs now. S1E1 aired live on 10/11/75, was hosted by the late great George Carlin with musical guests Janis
Ian and Billy Preston, had a budget of $250,000 (about $1.5M adjusted for inflation). Each episode's budget is between $2 & $2.5M, relatively shoestring
given the cost of that first show. The NRFPTP moniker was a contrast to a similar, unsuccessful show hosted by Howard Cosell, Saturday Night Live with
Howard Cosell, which aired at 8 pm on ABC, whose cast was called The Prime Time Payers. It included Bill Murray, who joined SNL as a writer & NRFPTP in
Season 2. The show was created by Lorne Michaels, who is still Executive Producer and Showrunner.
The NRFPTP immediately developed a cult following that included yours truly. I missed the premiere on 10/11/75, living in my parents' house at 16 with a
father whose pet peeves included our one 25” console TV being shut OFF at 11:00, when he went to bed. When I did find out about the show, I'd watch it
when I was home at incredibly low volume levels to make sure I didn't wake Dad up, who'd routinely be fast asleep by the 11:30 start time. That all ended
730 days - one day short of two years, since '76 was a leap year - after the 10/11/75 S1E1 premiere, when I went on my first date with Cindy Vance, a coworker
at Papa Luigi's Restaurant, Waterbury CT. We were married 6 years, 12 days later...and still are. Cindy parents were never about that “when I go to
bed, so does the rest of the world” ridiculousness. The first SNL after we were started dating was 10/15/77. We didn't watch it together. The next one was
10/29/77, and that night we went to an all night Halloween Party at our Boss’ apartment. I was dressed as a Playboy Bunny (see the guy with the really nice
legs below). Although we didn't pay that much attention to that 50th SNL (S3E4), hosted by Charles Grodin with musical guest Paul Simon, everyone at the
party gave it a look or two, and a tradition started. After that night, we'd do out best to close the restaurant quickly on Saturday nights, so we could go to her
parents house and watch the amazing cast of SNL, who called The NRFPTP through the end of that Season 3. That cast is widely regarded as the show's
greatest ever and, in my mind, unquestionably is: Dan Aykroyd; John Belushi; Jane Curtain; Garrett Morris; Bill Murray; Laraine Newman; and Gilda
Radner. Future & former MN Senator Al Franken & his writing/comedy partner Tom Davis were featured performers. Aykroyd & Curtain were Weekend
Update co-anchors, which featured the Point/Counterpoint spoof of 60 Minutes' same-named segment, where Aykroyd coined the legendary phrase, “Jane,
you ignorant slut!”. Rushing back to Cindy's house to see SNL every Saturday when a new episode aired became part of our Not Ready for Prime Time lives
together. We still watch every new episode together, but we DVR it. These days, I almost always fall asleep on Saturday Night before 11:30...with the TV ON!
Sitting here finalizing this review early in the morning of our 41st anniversary, I find it remarkable how linked our lives are to SNL. Fast backward to the day
we first sort of watched Episode 50 together: “Paulie, you Playboy Bunny slut!”. That was 46 years & 51 weeks to the day ago. You still have to go back 2
years & 18 days to get to the 10/11/75 S1E1 premiere of what we now call SNL, which aired as “NBC's Saturday Night”. Jason Reitman's “Saturday Night”
dramatizes the run-up to that episode. It's filmed very close to in real time, with the 109 minute movie beginning about 109 minutes before the 11:30 pm
air time. The scene is chaotic, including over 3 hours of dress rehearsed material for the 90 minute show, electrical & set construction problems, cast
personality crises, and a lack of support from NBC executives. Every problem & decision falls simultaneously on producer/creator Lorne Michaels (Gabrielle
LaBelle). The impersonations of the cast, guests, etc. are impeccable, notably Cory Michael Smith (Chevy Chase), Matt Wood (Belushi), Nicholas Braun (Andy
Kaufman and Jim Henson) and Paul Rust (Paul Shaffer). The film is an unprecedented combination of funny...and VERY tense. Despite knowing the
outcome, the pitfalls keep the audience on the edge of their seats over whether the show will go live or be preempted by a recently taped rerun of The
Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In its second week of wide release, Saturday Night has yet to earn a third of its $25M+ budget, despite excellent
reviews. It's well worth seeing for fans of The NRFPTP, SNL, film in general, comedies, thrillers, or men who dress as Playboy Bunnies. 4 Stars!
Oh the joy of feeling fall in the air, or as us Floridian’s call it , days in the upper to mid 70s. While the Hot Toddy is not
necessarily a popular drink during the summer months, there’s no doubt that once the temperature starts to drop some warm
holiday drinks come to mind. They can be soothing and relaxing and been around for many years all over the world.
Here’s a brief history of the Toddy and three of the more popular kinds we drink when it’s a little chilly out side.
The Hot Toddy, a warm and comforting beverage often associated with cold winter nights and soothing colds, has a rich history
that dates back centuries. Its origins are somewhat murky, with various accounts suggesting that the drink may have emerged
in Scotland or Ireland as early as the 17th century. The term "Toddy" itself is believed to be derived from the Hindi word "tadi,"
which refers to a fermented palm sap drink. Over time, the Hot Toddy evolved into a whiskey-based concoction, becoming
popularized as a remedy for ailments and a means of warming up during harsh winters.
Traditionally, a Hot Toddy consists of hot water, a spirit (commonly whiskey), honey, and
lemon. Its soothing properties have made it a go-to drink for those seeking relief from colds
and flu, as the warmth and steam can help alleviate congestion. The drink's versatility has led
to numerous variations, allowing for creativity and personalization.
Here are three distinct types of hot toddies that highlight the drink's adaptability:
1. Classic Whiskey Hot Toddy: This traditional version features a simple blend of hot water, a
shot of whiskey (often bourbon or Scotch), a spoonful of honey, and a squeeze of fresh lemon
juice. Garnished with a lemon slice and a cinnamon stick, this Hot Toddy is perfect for
warming up on a chilly evening.
2. Spiced Rum Hot Toddy: For those who prefer a sweeter, spicier option, the spiced rum Hot
Toddy is an excellent choice. Made with spiced rum, hot water, honey, and a splash of apple cider, this variation brings in warm
spices like cinnamon and nutmeg for added depth. It’s garnished with a slice of apple and a cinnamon stick, evoking the
flavors of fall.
3. Herbal Tea Hot Toddy: This non-alcoholic alternative is perfect for those avoiding alcohol but still wanting a cozy drink.
Brewed herbal tea (like chamomile or ginger) serves as the base, combined with honey, lemon, and a dash of cinnamon. This
soothing blend is ideal for relaxation, especially before bedtime.
In summary, the Hot Toddy remains a beloved drink, evolving through time to accommodate different tastes and preferences,
while retaining its reputation as a comforting and healing beverage.
