Season of the Dedication of the Church

Today marks the beginning of the final season in the Syro-

Malabar Church's liturgical calendar: the Season of the

Dedication of the Church (Qudas Edta). Over the next four

weeks, we commemorate Jesus, the Bridegroom, as He

lovingly offers the Church, His Bride, to the Father.

As the true Bridegroom, He leads the Church into the

heavenly bridal chamber, inviting us to share in the

imperishable glory and joy that awaits. This season

beautifully foreshadows the eternal bliss that will come after

the final judgment, reminding us of our hope in God's

promises.

During this sacred time, we reflect on the sanctity of the

Church as a whole, where we, the faithful, gather as a

community in God’s presence. Each of us is called to attain

this eternal glory through the Church—a sign of His heavenly

kingdom here on Earth, serving as a bridge between our

earthly lives and our heavenly destination.

Every time we enter a church, we are invited to meet and

unite with Christ through the Eucharistic celebration, our

heavenly banquet, which nourishes our souls and strengthens

our faith. The season fittingly begins with the parable of the

ten bridesmaids, encouraging us to remain vigilant and

prepared, waiting for our Bridegroom, Jesus, who will take us

into the bridal chamber of Heaven.

As we journey through this season, we will reflect on how our

faith communities prepare for this glorious union with Christ.

It culminates in the feast of Christ the King, where He shares

His splendor and reign with the entire Church, reminding us

of the ultimate fulfillment of our hopes and the call to live out

our faith in anticipation of His return.

Message from our

Associate Vicar

Dear Friends,

This weekend, and throughout the month of November, we fondly

remember all our departed loved ones. Some of the earliest Christian

writings outside the New Testament, such as the Acts of Paul and

Thecla and the Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity (both written in

the second century), refer to the Christian practice of praying for the

dead.

Praying for deceased family members as part of family night prayers

was an ancient practice among Oriental Christians. The early Church

Fathers encouraged this tradition, believing it was inherited from the

Apostles. Tertullian (A.D. 160-240) wrote about anniversary Masses for

the dead, advising widows to pray for their husbands. St. Augustine

noted that he prayed for his deceased mother, recalling her request:

“When I die, bury me anywhere you like, but remember to pray for me

at the altar” (Confessions, Book 11, Chapter 13, 35-37).

“In every way I have

shown you that by

hard work of that sort

we must help the

weak, and keep in

mind the words of the

Lord Jesus who

himself said, ‘It is

more blessed to give

than to receive.’”

~ Acts 20:35

Let us make this traditional prayer our own: Eternal rest grant unto

them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls

and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,

rest in peace. Amen.

GOSPEL REFLECTION ~ MATTHEW 25:1-13

Source: Daily Scripture Readings and Meditations

Are you missing out on what's most important in life? Being

unprepared can lead to a lot of unnecessary trouble and even

disastrous consequences! What good is a life-jacket left on

shore when the boat is sinking? Jesus’ story of ten silly girls

seems strange to westerners today. But his audience knew all

too well how easily this could happen to them. Wedding

customs in ancient Palestine required extra vigilance and

preparation for everyone involved. (Some near eastern villages

still follow this custom.) The bride and groom did not go away

for their honeymoon, but celebrated for a whole week with

their family and friends. It was the custom for the groom to

come at his discretion and get his bride and bring her to the

wedding party. If he came at night lamps were required by

necessity. To show up for a night party without a wedding

garment and a lamp is like showing up for a play or movie

that requires a reservation and a ticket. You just don’t get in

without the proper pass. Can you imagine the frustration one

experiences in traveling abroad and finding out you can’t get

into some country because you don’t have a valid passport or

visa.

Jesus warns us that there are consequences for being

unprepared. There are certain things you cannot obtain at the

last moment. For example, a student cannot prepare for his

exam when the day of testing is upon him. A person cannot

get the right kind of character or skill required for a task at

hand unless he already possesses it. Our eternal welfare

depends on our hearing, and many have trained themselves

to not hear. We will not be prepared to meet the Lord, face to

face, when he calls us on the day of judgment, unless we listen

to him today. The Lord invites us to feast at his banquet table.

Are you ready?

BENSENVILLE PARISH

CATECHISM DEPARTMENT

Dear Parish Family,

As our catechism department prepare to celebrate

All Saints Day this Sunday, I invite each of you to

reflect on the great legacy of faith, love, and

perseverance left by the saints. This celebration is

our chance to honor the countless men and women

who lived holy lives and now rejoice eternally in

God's presence. All Saints Day reminds us that

heaven is not just a distant dream; it is the joyful

promise that Christ holds out to each of us a call to

live with love, integrity, and devotion to God and

neighbor. Why do we, as Catholics, celebrate this

day so joyfully? First, it honors those faithful who

have reached heaven, having lived lives of faith on

earth.

Their example is a powerful witness, showing us

the path to holiness. On this day, we also pray for

their intercession, asking for their guidance and

blessings as we journey toward heaven ourselves.

It's a reminder that our hope is eternal - that we,

too, are called to the joy and glory of heaven, surrounded

by God, the angels, and all His saints. In

preparation, our catechism school will celebrate All

Saints Day with children dressing up as their patron

saints.

This tradition serves as a beautiful way for our

young ones to remember and honor their

special saint, replacing the darker images sometimes

associated with Halloween with the shining

example of those who followed Christ faithfully.

Children are reminded that the saints are real heroes

of our faith, each with unique virtues and stories

to inspire them. By choosing to dress as their

saint, our young parishioners learn more about

their life and legacy, gaining a model to follow on

their own path to holiness. I ask all parents to

encourage and help your children dress as their

patron saints this Sunday.

This meaningful gesture allows them to bring the

saints' lives into our midst and shows them that the

saints are companions on their journey. Thank you

for your dedication in making this a memorable day

for our children and for helping them to see the

beauty of a life lived with God. My heartfelt thanks

also go to our catechism teachers, who work tirelessly

to inspire and guide our young ones in their

faith. Let us join together in prayer and celebration

next Sunday, honoring all saints and asking for their

intercession, as we strengthen our own hope of

sharing in their eternal joy.

In Christ's love,

Thomas Achan & Bins Achan

Bringing Heritage to Campus:

A Holy Qurbana Experience

A few weeks ago, on October 16, Fr. Bins Chethalil visited the University of

Illinois Urbana-Champaign to celebrate Holy Qurbana at St. John’s Catholic

Newman Center on campus along with Fr. Joel Pius from the Mar Thoma Sleeha

Syro-Malabar Cathedral. This is an event organized by a group of Malayali

students every semester on campus to give students, especially those who are

out of state, a chance to attend mass in the Syro-Malabar Rite. Before the

Qurbana, the priests traveled across campus to several different

dorms/apartments to provide a blessing at the student's dwelling. The mass

was open to everyone, and the turnout was impressive, with many students

from the Knanaya and Syro-Malabar communities in attendance, along with

many others looking to experience something new.

Overall, the Qurbana was a huge success with a wonderful group of altar

servers and choir assisting, resulting in positive feedback all around.

Afterwards, all attendees were invited to stay for pizza, dessert, and

socializing. Students of all ages attended this event and it was a good

opportunity to connect with old friends and to meet new fellow Knas. I

want to thank Fr. Bins and Fr. Joel for making the long journey down to

Urbana-Champaign. It means a lot to our youth and your dedication and

commitment towards shaping our faith is appreciated. Oftentimes, it's difficult

for college students to stay connected with their faith when they are far

from home, so we are glad that so many of the youth took time out of their

busy schedules on a weekday to attend the Holy Qurbana. This shows how

strong faith is within the Knanaya community!

Adaptive Faith Formation:

Prioritizing Children with Special Needs

In recent years, the Catholic Church has increasingly embraced adaptive faith formation to

better serve its diverse community, with a particular focus on children with learning

disabilities, special needs, and developmental disabilities. This evolving approach seeks to

ensure that faith education is inclusive, accessible, and meaningful for all young learners.

Adaptive faith formation recognizes that traditional methods may not adequately address

the needs of children with varying abilities. By prioritizing flexibility and personalization, this

newly developed program specifically tailored to support these children. This includes

creating materials and environments that are sensitive to different learning needs, such as

sensory-friendly resources, visual aids, and interactive activities.

For children with learning disabilities or developmental disabilities, adaptive faith formation

involves crafting inclusive programs that accommodate various learning styles and

developmental stages. The goal is to ensure that each child can participate in and benefit

from faith formation activities.

In our church, children with special needs to feel welcomed and valued. This includes

fostering an environment of understanding, mentoring, and providing inclusive service

opportunities. Such approaches will help children with special needs to connect with others

and grow spiritually in a supportive and affirming setting.

By implementing these adaptive strategies, we aim to provide a rich and inclusive faith

experience for all children, irrespective of their abilities. This commitment not only supports

the individual spiritual development of children with special needs but also enhances the

Church’s mission to build a welcoming and compassionate faith community. Through

ongoing adaptation and innovation, the church seeks to ensure that its teachings are

accessible and meaningful for every child.

Our Bensenville Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church is also dreaming of providing

adaptive faith formation to those of our kidos who are differently abled. Anyone who is

interested in enrolling children or to volunteer for this noble venture, may please contact the

DRE, Zacharia Chelakkal (630-605-1172) or Parent Coordinator, Lince Thannichuvattil (630-
