offered to mow the 

lawn for a poor old man 

who lived in her village. 

When she arrived at his 

house, the man was so 

grateful he invited her 

in for a cup of tea and a 

cookie. 

As she ate her cookie, 

Susie noticed a shiny 

substance coating her 

plate. When the old 

man saw her staring at 

it, he said, “Sorry, dear, 

it’s as clean as cold 

water could get it.” 

When she’d finished 

mowing the lawn the 

old man invited her 

in again for a sandwich. 

This time, Susie

Barry and his father 

live in the country. 

They must use an 

outhouse which Barry 

hated. It’s hot in the 

summer, cold in the 

winter, and stinks all 

the time. The outhouse 

is sitting on the 

bank of a creek and 

the boy determined 

that one day, he would 

push that outhouse 

into the creek. 

After spring rain, the 

creek was swollen so 

Barry decided today 

was the day to push 

the outhouse into the 

creek. He grabbed a 

large stick and started 

pushing. Finally, the 

outhouse toppled into 

the creek and floated 

away. 

That night his dad told 

him they were going 

to the woodshed after 

supper. Knowing that 

meant a spanking, 

Barry asked why. The 

dad replied, “Someone 

pushed the outhouse 

into the creek today. 

It was you, wasn’t it 

son?” 

The boy answered 

yes. He thought for 

a minute and said, 

“Dad, I read in school 

today that George 

Washington chopped 

down a cherry tree 

and didn’t get in trouble 

because he told 

the truth.” The dad 

replied, 

“Well, son, George 

Washington’s father 

wasn’t in that cherry 

tree." 

My favorite exercise is a cross between a lunge and a crunch. I call it lunch.
