From social isolation to
representing New Zealand
Eight years ago, Nathan
Winkelman was stuck
in a rut, spending most
of his time playing
PlayStation in his
room. Now he is one
of the country’s top
intellectually disabled
athletes. Kees Chalmers
reports
DIRECTIONLESS, with no
social life and little prospects.
That was Nathan Winkelman in
2016. But the Special Olympics
has turned his life around.
Winkelman, 34, suffers from
global development delays along
with dyspraxia, a neurological
disorder that affects his coordination
and basic motor skills.
Even everyday activities like
shaving and brushing his teeth
pose challenges.
His mother, Corina
Winkelman, heard about the
Special Olympics and convinced
him to drop the controller and
pick up a basketball.
Then, while at a fundraising
event, his 198cm frame caught
the eye of a basketball coach, who
invited him to a training session.
The Papanui resident instantly
set his sights on representing
New Zealand at the Special
Olympics World Games, and
last year realised that dream by
competing in Berlin for three-onthree
basketball.
“It was an amazing
opportunity; it was always my
dream to represent New Zealand
when I joined the Special
Olympics, but I never expected
to get picked or anything,” he
said.
The team finished fourth in
their division, following a
nail-biting plate final where
the Kiwis were up with less
than a minute to go, but fell short
in the dying moments of the
game.
His focus is now on the Special
Olympics’ national summer
games, which will be held in
Christchurch next December –
the first time since 2005.
Covid-19 gave the Special
Olympics a tumultuous few
years, forcing a delay to its most
recent national summer games in
Hamilton in 2022, and resulting
in much lower numbers than
previous events.
Competitive sport a life-changer for
intellectually disabled athlete
• From page 1
Next year, the summer games
are set to be back at their best.
More than 1300 athletes are
expected to compete across 42
clubs in 11 different sports, up
from around 900 in 2022.
Said Special
Olympics NZ
events director
Liz Fitzgerald:
“This last 12
months has just
been working
through the programme
of activity
that we need
to have lined up,
Liz
Fitzgerald
so when we get to the year of the
event, we’re all ready to go.”
It includes organising accommodation,
venues and core
suppliers.
The NSG’s funding comes
from grants, and negotiations
are under way with sponsors to
help bring the attendance fee
down, but athletes, coaches and
managers will still have to pay a
hefty sum.
Fees have not been finalised
but are expected to range between
$550-$750, plus an extra
$400-$600 to live in the athletes
village at Canterbury University.
The city council also provided
funding to help secure the event
RECOGNISED: Nathan Winkelman with the New Zealand Special Olympics basketball
three-on-three team in Berlin.
for the city.
City council sports promotions
and events advisor Brooke Jones
said the new facilities – including
the Parakiore Recreation Centre,
set to open next year – will allow
athletes to compete “in world
class venues”.
The Special Olympics has
worked with Canterbury University
on accommodating the
athletes and making the costs as
manageable as possible.
“Our buyers aren’t looking to
make a lot of money off us,” said
Fitzgerald.
“They’re looking to deliver an
event for people who need some
help in their lives.”
Equally as critical are the
thousands of coaches and volunteers,
said Special Olympics NZ
South Island sports co-ordinator,
Paula Winsor.
“It just wouldn’t happen without
them.”
For Winkelman, the physical
obstacles walk hand in hand
with the social challenges, with
limited work and sporting opportunities
when he was growing
up.
“People don’t want to hire
someone with a disability because
they think, well, we can get
a capable person to do that job,”
he said.
For the past 11 years, Winkelman
has worked as a small goods
meat packer at Moot’s Meat
Market in Riccarton.
Corina said finding employment
can be the biggest challenge
for intellectually disabled
people.
She expressed
frustration with
the system and
support networks
generally.
“We haven’t
found any magic
pill that’s fixed
it all.”
Al Robson
Special Olympics chairperson
and basketball coach Al Robson
said it will be important to build
on the momentum the Christchurch
games will create, to ensure
there are more opportunities for
disabled athletes.
One way was to establish
integrated programmes with
mainstream sports clubs.
Work was also being done in
schools to give opportunities to
pupils who were being left out
of sporting activities because of
their disability.
Because Winkelman has
recently competed at the world
games, he will be unable to compete
at the next one in 2027 to
give other athletes a go. He will
be available for selection again
in 2031.
But, his motivation goes beyond
a specific goal or even the
game itself.
“These Olympics have given
me the opportunity to build
friendships and have a social life,
instead of just sitting at home
doing nothing.
“I want to keep playing ‘til I
can’t play anymore.”
Savour the fresh green flavours of spring
Nigel Slater serves up a
vibrant soup-stew with
croutes and a dish of
cheesy asparagus
to put some tastes
of spring on your plate
Green vegetable stew,
basil pesto toasts
A soup-stew of spring vegetables
and green herbs. Include green
beans if you wish, cut into short
lengths, or a last-minute addition
of spinach leaves. If you have any
basil paste left over, you can use
it to toss with cooked pasta or to
spread on cheese on toast.
Ingredients
Serves 4-6
Ready in 75 minutes
200g broad beans
200g young leeks
80g spring onions
200g courgettes
250g peas, shelled
1 litre vegetable stock
280g judion beans, canned or
bottled, or haricot or flageolet
For the croutes:
1 small baguette
1 clove garlic
30g pine kernels
40g basil leaves
25g parmesan, finely grated, plus a
little extra to serve
About 100ml of olive oil, plus
extra for making toasts
Method
• Bring a deep pan of water to
the boil, then drop in the broad
beans and let them cook for 5-6
minutes until almost tender.
Scoop the beans from the water
with a draining spoon and drop
them into cold water.
• If you wish, pop the broad
beans from their papery shells by
squeezing between thumb and
forefinger.
• Slice the leeks into thick
rounds, then wash very
thoroughly in deep cold water.
Thinly slice the spring onions.
Warm a couple of tablespoons of
olive oil over a moderate heat in
a deep saucepan, then stir in the
leeks and spring onions. Place
a piece of baking parchment or
greaseproof paper over the leeks,
then cover with a lid. This will
allow them to soften and steam
without colour.
• Let the leeks and onions
cook for about 10 minutes,
checking them every now and
again to make sure they are not
browning. Slice the courgettes
into small, thick pieces. Remove
the lid and parchment from the
pan, then stir in the courgettes,
broad beans and the peas and
continue cooking. Pour in the
vegetable stock and bring to the
boil.
• Rinse the jarred beans and
add them to the soup, stirring
gently. (They are tender and easy
to break up.) Season generously
with salt and black pepper. Let
the soup simmer gently while
you make the croutes.
• First, make the pesto: peel
the garlic clove and pound it
with a little sea salt. Add the
pine kernels and continue until
you have coarse paste, then
introduce the basil leaves and
mash everything to a thick green
mixture, introducing a little of
the olive oil if it becomes stiff.
Stir in the grated parmesan, then
the remaining olive oil to make a
spreadable paste.
• Get an overhead (oven)
grill hot. Slice the baguette into
rounds, about 2cm thick. Place
them on a grill pan or baking
sheet and toast under the grill
until golden. Turn them over and
toast the other side, then remove
from the grill and trickle with
the olive oil. Spread generously
with the paste.
• Ladle the soup into bowls
and float the basil croutes on top.
Pass a dish of extra parmesan
around as you serve.
Asparagus, melted cheese
Any soft, creamy-textured
cheese that melts well will work
here. A log of goat’s milk cheese,
sliced into rounds, is particularly
suited to melting under a hot
grill. It is a good idea to protect
the tips of the asparagus with
foil before you put them under
the grill, to keep them sweet and
juicy.
Ingredients
Serves 2
Ready in 20 minutes
12 thick asparagus spears
A little melted butter
2 goat’s milk cheeses, about 120g
each
Method
• Put a deep pan of water on to
boil and salt it lightly. Trim the
ends of the asparagus. When the
water is boiling drop in the spears
and cook for about 7 minutes,
depending on their thickness. The
spears should be cooked until they
will bend slightly when pulled
from the water.
• Warm an overhead (oven)
grill. Remove the asparagus from
the water with kitchen tongs
(draining them in a colander will
damage the delicate tips) and lay
them side by side on a grill pan.
Brush lightly with butter.
• Slice the cheeses in half
horizontally and place them on
top of the spears. Cook under the
heated grill for a few minutes until
the cheese melts.
• More food, page 12
Add some spice to your life, then chill out
Fiery meatballs and a
cooling salad for can
add some fun flavour
to sunnier days, writes
Nigel Slater
Pork and chorizo cakes
with tomato sauce
Tiny, spicy cakes, hot from
the oven, with a simple tomato
sauce. You can play with the
spice level to suit your taste
by using different flavoured
sausages.
To skin the sausages, slit the
skin down the length of the
sausage with a sharp knife, then
peel it back, pulling the meat
away.
Ingredients
Makes 20 cakes. Serves 4.
Ready in 1 hour
For the tomato sauce:
2, medium-sized onions
2tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic
2tsp tomato purée
500g tomatoes
250ml water
For the cakes:
3 spring onions
2tbsp olive oil
250g spicy sausages, such as
chorizo
500g minced pork
1-2tsp chilli paste
10g parsley, chopped
60g breadcrumbs, white and
fresh
Method
• Peel and roughly chop
the onions. Warm the oil in
a medium-sized, deep-sided
saucepan, then stir in the onions
and leave them to cook over a
moderate heat for about 15-20
minutes. Stir them every now
and again, until they have
coloured a little and are starting
to soften.
• Peel and finely slice the
garlic, then stir into the onions.
Continue cooking, then
introduce the tomato purée, stir
well and leave for 5 minutes, then
roughly chop the tomatoes and
add to the onions.
• Pour in the water, then season
generously with salt and black
pepper, partially cover with a
lid and leave to simmer for 15
minutes or so.
• Make the pork cakes: finely
slice the spring onions into tiny
rounds, discarding the roots and
the darkest tips of the leaves.
Warm the oil in a shallow pan,
then add the onions and cook for
a few minutes until soft, stirring
regularly.
• Add the sausage meat to the
minced pork to the bowl, the
chilli paste, chopped parsley and
breadcrumbs, season, stir in the
softened spring onions, then mix
thoroughly. This is done most
easily with your hands.
• Break off lumps of the
mixture, about 45-50g in weight,
and shape them into rough balls
and set them aside on a tray. You
should have about 20.
• Preheat the oven to 200C.
• Warm a little more oil in
the pan, then add some of the
meatballs, letting them fry until
golden on the underside before
turning them over.
• Transfer the tomato sauce to
a baking dish. Let the other side
of the meatballs colour to a nice
golden brown, then place them
in the sauce, and continue with
the remaining cakes.
• Bake for about 20 minutes
until the cakes are cooked
through.
Chilled spicy cucumber
and tomato salad
Refreshing, spicy, salty and
crisp, this is one of those salads
for a laid-back lunch on a
scorching afternoon.
Ingredients
Serves 3-4. Ready in 30 minutes
1 red chilli, medium-hot
1 large pepper, red or orange
half a large cucumber
100g mangetout or sweet peas
200g cherry tomatoes
coriander, a small bunch
6 sprigs mint
70g cashews, salted and roasted
For the dressing:
3tbsp lime juice
3tbsp fish sauce
1tsp caster sugar
2tsp chilli sauce
Method
• Slice the chilli in half
lengthways, remove the seeds,
then cut into very fine shreds
and put into a mixing bowl.
• Halve the pepper, pull out the
core and seeds, then shred into
long, fine strips. Add this to the
chillies, then peel the cucumber,
cut in half lengthways and
remove the core with a teaspoon.
Cut into thin slices and mix with
the pepper and chilli.
• Cut the mangetout into
thin shreds, halve the cherry
tomatoes and add both to the
peppers.
• Remove the coriander and
mint leaves from their stems,
then tear or roughly chop and
scatter in the salad.
• Make the dressing: put the
lime juice, fish sauce and sugar
in a small bowl or jam jar and
stir or shake until the sugar has
dissolved. Stir in the chilli sauce.
• In a dry, shallow pan, toast
the cashews, just enough to
warm them. Dress the salad with
the lime and fish sauce tossing
gently to coat, then transfer to a
large serving plate.
• Scatter the toasted nuts over
the salad and serve.
Halloween in the Park with Ray White
Papanui, Papanui Rotary and Rotary
Ōtautahi Passport Rotary Club!
What an incredible Halloween afternoon we had at St
James Park, Papanui! Our sixth annual Halloween in the
Park kids community event, brought to life by the Ray
White Papanui team and the Rotary Ōtautahi Passport
Rotary Club of Papanui, was a swashbuckling adventure
enjoyed by all!
PAPANUI
Pirates, mermaids, and young adventurers alike joined
forces to retrieve the lost treasure, solving clues and
hunting for gems across the seven seas. The spirit of
Halloween was in full swing, with costumes ranging from
classic pirates to mystical mermaids, and even a few
unexpected surprises!
Thank you to everyone who joined us in making this day
magical! Seeing so many smiling faces and creative
costumes brought our team immense joy, and we’re thrilled
to have celebrated Halloween with the Papanui community
once again.
A huge shoutout to our amazing volunteers and event
organizers who made this event possible. We look forward
to seeing you next year for another unforgettable
Halloween in the Park!
