volunteers have been providing a safe and warm 

space for homeless and vulnerable people over 35 

years. For all the info of everything they do, and how

We also take a look back at the history of Children in 

Need. The BBC’s first ever broadcast for children 

was on Christmas Day in 1927, and has since gone 

from strength to strength raising phenomenal 

amounts over the years. See our History section on 

page 28 for more.

History 

This month we take a look at the history 

of Children in Need, the BBC’s charity 

for disadvantaged children and young 

people in the UK, whose telethon takes 

place in November each year. 

The BBC's first ever broadcast charity appeal for 

children was a five-minute radio broadcast on 

Christmas Day in 1927. The response was 

phenomenal and it raised £1,143 18s 3d, which 

was split between four prominent children’s 

charies. 

The first televised appeal was the 1955 'Children's 

Hour Christmas Appeal', presented by Sooty and 

Harry Corbe. The Christmas Day Appeals 

connued on TV and radio right up unl 1979, 

raising a total of £625,836. The presenters 

included Terry Hall, Eamonn Andrews, Leslie 

Crowther, Michael Aspel and the rising star of the 

Radio 2 Breakfast Show - Terry Wogan - who made 

his debut appearance in 1978. 

In 1980 the appeal was broadcast on BBC One in a 

new telethon format, hosted by Terry with Sue 

Lawley and Esther Rantzen. It captured the public's 

imaginaon to such an extent that the donaons 

increased dramacally and broke the £1 million 

mark for the very first me. 

Pudsey Bear made his television debut in 1985 

when Terry introduced the new cuddly mascot to 

the audience. He was designed by Joanna Ball, a 

BBC graphics designer, who named him aer the 

West Yorkshire town where she was born. He 

proved very popular and returned as BBC Children 

in Need's official logo the following year with his 

design amended to that of a yellow bear with a red 

spoed bandage. 

Apart from a party hat worn in 2004 to celebrate 

the telethon's silver jubilee, Pudsey has remained 

very much the same. But a 2007 revamp gave 

Pudsey a fresh new look and brighter colours in 

me for the 28th annual BBC Children in Need 

Appeal. 

The format was developed throughout the 1980s 

to the point where the telethon segments grew 

longer and the regular programming diminished, 

eventually being dropped altogether from 1984 in 

favour of a single connuous programme. This 

format has grown in scope to incorporate further 

events broadcast on radio and online. As a regular 

presenter, Wogan had become firmly associated 

with the annual event, connuing to front it unl 

2014. The following year, he started to endure ill 

health, from which he died in 2016. 

Following the closure of the BBC Television Centre, 

from 2013 to 2020 the telethon broadcasts took 

place at the BBC Elstree Centre. The telethon 

previously lasted for up to 7 hours, but since 2020, 

it has been reduced to a 3 hour programme from 

7pm unl 10pm. In relaon to the event having 

content designed for family viewing, the watershed 

is delayed unl 11:30pm. 

In 2020, due to the COVID pandemic, the telethon 

was reduced to a singular programme with only 

four presenters: Mel Giedroyc, Alex Sco, Chris 

Ramsey and Stephen Mangan. As of November 

2021, the annual telethon has taken place at Dock 

10, MediaCityUK in Salford. In October 2023, it 

was reported that, for the first me in Children in 

Need history, the BBC's 2023 appeal broadcast 

would have its first child co-presenter, with 

children's TV star and Doctor Who actor Lenny 

Rush taking on the role. 

When is BBC Children in Need 2024? 

This year, BBC Children in Need will be taking place 

on Friday 15th November 2024, will be hosted by 

Ade Adepitan MBE, Alex Sco MBE, Chris Ramsey, 

Mel Giedroyc and Jason Manford and will mark the 

43rd TV Appeal to raise money for disadvantaged 

children and young people around the UK. It 

begins at its usual me live on BBC One and 

finishes at 10.00 pm. You can also stream the live 

TV Appeal on BBC iPlayer. 

Between 1980 and 2023 over £1 billion has been 

raised by Children in Need and you never cease to 

amaze with fabulous fundraising events and 

generous donaons. However, there are sll so 

many children that need help so make sure you get 

involved and help to make a difference to children 

who need our help the most, especially in such 

tough economic mes.

HARC (Homeless & Rootless at Christmas) 

About HARC 

Homeless and Rootless at Christmas (HARC) 

have been providing a safe and warm day 

shelter for homeless and vulnerable people 

over the Christmas period since 1989. This 

year we will open at Victoria Hall in the city 

centre on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

walks of life, 

and bring skills, 

enthusiasm 

and experience 

which are invaluable to us.

tea every day, and our guests are welcome 

to spend the entire time that we are open 

with us if they like. We offer an open-door 

policy- everyone is welcome. 

As well as the food, a warm welcome, 

company, and something to do, helps our 

guests to get through what can be a cold 

and lonely time of year.

BOLSOVER CASTLE 

LANTERN PARADE 

Bolsover Castle and town

Established in 1994, the 

Bolsover Lantern Parade has lit 

up the town for three decades. 

Growing in size every year, 

there will be hundreds of 

lanterns in the procession, as 

well as thousands of people 

lining the streets to watch the 

amazing spectacle. Every year 

the event engages local 

Bolsover communies, in 

parcipatory arts acvity and 

has also inspired generaons of 

local people. 

The Bolsover Lantern Parade 

will start at Bolsover Castle, 

featuring community-made 

lanterns. It is a non-cketed, 

free event, but Juncon Arts 

welcomes donaons to support 

the connuaon of this magical 

and memorable event within 

the town.
