Linerless
When Nordvalls acquired Lexit Labels in the spring of 2023,
we also added a new type of label to our range – linerless.

WHAT ARE LINERLESS LABELS?
These labels fit around a product, almost like a
belt. As the name suggests, the label has no liner
– in other words, no backing paper. Linerless
labels have adhesive strips applied to the back
and silicone strips to the front, which make the
labels easy to separate from one another on
the roll during application.
HOW ARE THEY PRINTED?
First the labels are printed in a printing press,
before being transferred to another machine that
applies adhesive strips and UV-cured silicone strips
to the front and back. Finally, the labels are wound
onto a roll and prepared for delivery.
Nordvalls’ unit in Mölnlycke has many years
of experience in printing linerless labels, for the
Norwegian market in particular.
Multiple benefits
Linerless is a very popular label
“
solution in Norway, especially for
prepackaged food. It’s probably
only a matter of time before it really
takes off in Sweden as well.
”
Jostein Sæter, Sales Manager at Nordvalls Etikett AS
SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE
Since no backing paper is used, hardly any waste
is produced during either printing or application
and the total material consumption is significantly
lower than for self-adhesive labels. With linerless,
there is room for more labels on each roll, which
results in fewer boxes and therefore fewer transports
are needed. Imagine a linerless paper label around
a plastic tray; it is easier to separate the materials
for recycling, as you usually have to remove the
linerless label to access the product.
EFFICIENT PRODUCTION
With more labels per roll, there are fewer roll
changes, which makes for an efficient production
flow and faster manufacturing.
STRONG AND DURABLE
Nordvalls can produce printed linerless labels on
different thicknesses of paper or synthetic materials.
These are used for various items, such as trays or
different packaging for food.
DESIGN ADVANTAGES
Since linerless labels encircle products like a belt,
they offer huge scope in terms of design. With
more sides to print on, you can fit a lot of information
on these labels compared to traditional
self-adhesive labels. •
Here for
the beer
With flavours like Raspberry Milkshake IPA
and Julmust Sour, and labels featuring everything
from a burning candle or a smiley face to
imaginative and enigmatic motifs, beers from
Omnipollo are easily recognizable.
CLIENT
WE HEAD TOWARDS a grand orange church
in Sundbyberg, simply known as Omnipollo’s
Church, to visit our customer – the brewery
Omnipollo. It’s a Friday in the autumn of 2023,
a few hours before opening, when we know it will
be packed just like the night before when we came
here for an event.
Karl Grandin, artist and co-founder of Omnipollo,
welcomes us in through the staff entrance and
leads us up a few stairs to his studio. The bookshelves
are full of cans and bottles with colourful
labels, like a library of beers. As we are about to
sit down, Karl pushes aside some sketches he has
been working on. The whole room oozes a sense
of creativity, humour and warmth.
KARL’S PATH TO BREWING was not straightforward.
After completing a Master’s degree in
art and design in Amsterdam and working as a
graphic designer, he found himself in the fashion
industry as co-founder of clothing company
Cheap Monday.
“A friend and I designed the well-known logo
– the skull. It was super intense for a few years
as we expanded rapidly, but we learned a lot.
After a few years two friends from Cheap
Monday and I were keen to try something new
– so we opened a pizzeria called Pizzahatt!
Funnily enough, now, several years on, pizzas
from Pizzahatt are being served at the bar
Omnipollos hatt, which was also named after
the pizzeria.”
Karl and co. continued to create groundbreaking
pizzas with playful flavour combinations
while taking on some design jobs on the
side. Then he got a tip about Henok Fentie,
a home brewer who had moved back from
Belgium and wanted to launch a beer.
“We met on a blind date and instantly hit
it off! I knew I needed to get Henok’s brilliance
to shine through the design on the label and
packaging. My philosophy was to try out a clean
product, with no text and a big logo to catch the
customer’s interest. Henok gave me free reins
and it was make or break!”
“
My favourite label is Fatamorgana. An iconic design
for a beer that had a big impact on the microbrewery
scene. The label blends nicely into the can, creating
a similar feel to the original glass bottle.
Fatamorgana is often used as a reference by other
customers who want a ‘no label look’.
Mattias Johansson, Nordvalls prepress
A great buzz in Sundbyberg’s old church from guests who have come here for the food and beer.
14
KARL INITIALLY THOUGHT this would be a
one-off job. None of them could have guessed it
would be the start of a long journey and a great
friendship.
“First we launched Levon, then Maz the year
after, then maybe ten beers the year after and it
just kept going. After a while Henok asked me
what we should call our own brewery.”
Omnipollo has been brewing beer in Sundbyberg’s
old church since 2020. The choice of venue
was obvious. Today, the brewery has a taproom,
restaurant and indoor and outdoor social spaces.
On the upper floor, guests sit in old church benches
on the balcony, looking down on the big shiny
fermentation tanks below.
Nowadays they are involved in lots of collaborations,
where Henok and his counterparts at
other breweries around the world develop recipes
together, inspired by each other’s different brewing
styles. Karl describes it as a really nice community
with an open attitude towards recipes, flavours
and techniques.
“I thought I knew a lot about beer, but when
I met Henok, he opened a door to a completely
new world, like Narnia,” he says.
WHAT DOES THE NAME OMNIPOLLO MEAN?
“Henok came up with it and has described it as:
omni – something ever-present and pollo – a bird.
The big and the small, a kind of ying and yang,”
says Karl, laughing.
Karl is the illustrator behind the motifs on
“
This one’s so good. Who doesn’t love
iridescent green? The picture doesn’t
do it justice. You need to experience it
for real for that tactile effect.
”
Karl Grandin talking about Eliphas DIPA, double IPA 8.1%

Hypnagoga, pale ale 5%, is one of Karl Grandin’s favourite labels: “We brewed a beer for a book with the same
name that I released a few years ago. Imagination is needed to help interpret what’s in someone else’s head.”
Omnipollo’s labels, and is keen for the print to
reflect his vision. He talks a lot about different
dimensions in the graphic design. Karl is a creative
person, but he is also clearly on top of things and
leaves nothing to chance.
“We were extra careful in choosing a label
printing company. We contacted lots of options.
Ideally, we wanted a Swedish supplier, close at
hand, and to see what technical possibilities there
were to decide who could best interpret our vision
on a label. We wanted to find something special!”
Today, Omnipollo has a team of contacts at
Nordvalls: Alexander Streng, a key account
manager based in Stockholm, and Linda Johansson,
from the customer support team at Nordvalls in
Mölnlycke. Karl has a particularly good relationship
with Mattias Johansson from the Nordvalls
prepress department.
“It’s no secret that we liked working with
Mattias when he used to work for another supplier
and our paths first crossed. We followed Mattias
to Nordvalls and it has turned out really well!”
KARL DESCRIBES the collaboration with Mattias
as being open to ideas, adventurous and not afraid
to switch approach to find opportunities. He is
familiar with Omnipollo’s production processes
after the label is delivered and knows what works
and what doesn’t for Omnipollo’s products in
terms of materials.
“I can trust Mattias. With the risk of sounding
a bit geeky, I know what I can get out of a certain
range of, say, blue tones. Mattias and I have
developed our own colour chart, and that only
works because we have done so much together
and have a well-developed mutual relationship.”
Mattias agrees with Karl’s view:
“There are lots of things that make working
with Omnipollo’s labels fun! They put a tremendous
amount of time and thought into the design
and selecting materials. They have a slightly higher
budget than many other customers, which creates
scope for using exclusive materials and effects.
They are the first to try out the latest technologies.
For me, it’s exciting to be part of the process of
finding new combinations and pushing the boundaries
of printing technology.
There are several labels we spent a lot of time
on to get right. It might be a matter of finding a
gold mix that blends completely into the can or
seeing how the colours behave on a coloured,
fluorescent material. One really successful label is
Eliphas, where we found a semi-transparent holographic
material that changes colour depending on
the substrate. It’s a genuinely unique label,” he says.
AS WELL AS its own brewery, Omnipollo runs
bars in various countries. In its website archive,
you can read about some 450 different beers,
all with labels that share a common style and
stand out from anything else on the store shelf.
The beers are sold in over 50 countries and are
known for their distinctive playful ideas and
innovative flavours. •
Get to know Angela Oberdorfer, Quality Manager

AS QUALITY MANAGER at Nordvalls
Etikett, Angela Oberdorfer’s job
is to push quality issues at all of
Nordvalls’ Swedish units. She has
over 25 years of experience in
working with packaging and, in
recent years, labelling. Angela, who
is based in Mölnlycke, works in a
team alongside quality coordinators
based in Bjuv and Sjöbo.
“My task is to push, coordinate
and provide support on quality
issues at Nordvalls. This past year,
since Nordvalls acquired Lexit
Labels, we have worked hard to
synchronise our management
systems. We have different types
of certifications that need to be
harmonised across all facilities,”
Angela says.
17

18
What internal processes are in place to ensure
labels meet customers’ quality standards?
“First of all, the sales department makes sure to
find out all necessary information regarding the
label. The label must be produced in a way that
makes it suitable for the environment it will be
in, such as heat or cold, or to withstand chemicals,
for example. The internal sales team works on a
daily basis to provide information to our customers
and pass on their requests internally.
We work closely with our material suppliers.
When goods arrive, all products are carefully
checked to make sure we’ve received what we
ordered, and that the goods are complete and
clean. When it comes to printing, the staff in
production have a checklist to tick off for each
batch produced. This ensures that the agreed
controls have been done and we have recorded
what we need to for our own traceability. This
includes everything from colours, die cuts, any
perforations and readability to functional tests
and even documented technical information on
how the item has been produced. We also have
checklists for daily and weekly maintenance
and cleaning. Our technicians have checklists
and programmes to follow, to keep machines
running efficiently.”
“
All parts have a role to play;
all the cogs are equally important.
Our production staff can’t
work wonders if the conditions
aren’t right.
”
ALL STAGES ARE involved in quality assurance
and quality is everyone’s responsibility. Angela
developed the quality assurance management
system herself and is therefore heavily involved.
“All parts have a role to play; all the cogs are
equally important. Our production staff can’t work
wonders if the conditions aren’t right. Mistakes
happen sometimes, as they do in production, so it’s
important to handle them correctly, whether labels
have been sent to customers or not. We thoroughly
investigate all internal non-conformities and
customer cases and always try to find the root
of cause so we can address it and stop them recurring.
Continuous improvement work needs to
be ongoing.”
Tell us more about the ISO 22000
food certification
“ISO 22000 is a standard that sets requirements
for food safety management systems. This means,
among other things, that we risk assess all our
process steps to minimise the risk of causing harm
to consumers. The method used for this type of
risk assessment is called HACCP.”

“
There are always new requirements
and needs from both customers
and different legislation.
”
Will any new food requirements be introduced
between 2025 and 2030?
“There are always new requirements and needs
from both customers and different legislation.
For example, municipalities across Sweden are in
the process of registering food contact materials
(FCMs).
There’s a lot of discussion about this FCM registration.
Legislation on these materials is constantly
being reviewed and requirements are increasing.
The EU is also reviewing the Plastics Directive (for
food packaging), so it will be interesting to see what
comes next. We’re keeping a close eye on this!” •
Angela as a label
If you were a label, what kind
of label would you be?
“I would say I have many layers, and
essentially I want to be transparent.
I’m a happy person, so I would have
lots of bright colours and would probably
have some tough adhesive. I know I
can be demanding. I ask lots of difficult
questions and I interfere a lot.”
FSSC 22000 certification
IN 2024, the Sjöbo site is set to be certified to
FSSC 22000 (a GFSI-approved standard based
on ISO 22000). At the same time, Mölnlycke is
upgrading its certificate so that both sites will be
FSSC 22000 certified.
They will be quality assured to keep them up to
date with customer requirements. This will provide
reassurance for our food customers, as we can easily
demonstrate that we have a management system
that focuses on consumer safety.
THIS INVOLVES, FOR EXAMPLE:
• Controlling processes so that colours and
other chemicals do not migrate from the label
to the final product.
• Preventing foreign objects, or any physical
object that is not intentionally added, from
ending up in label shipments and at the food
producer in whatever form.
• Counteracting microbial hazards through
hygiene and cleaning practices, such as
washing hands, wearing protective equipment
and clothing used only in the hygiene zone
and checking incoming goods.
• Avoiding chemical risks that could contaminate
labels in the printing presses.
FSSC 22000 CERTIFICATION is not mandatory,
but completely voluntary. However, it makes it
easier for us to demonstrate that we will meet
the increasing requirements for food packaging
both now and in future, and for our customers
to assess this.
Scandinavia

At an impressive 14 metres long
and a whopping 18 tonnes, many
eyebrows were raised when it was
delivered to Nordvalls’ head office
in Sjöbo.
IN FEBRUARY 2024, we announced that Nordvalls
was one out of five label printing companies
in the world (in 2023) to instal an HP Indigo V12
digital printing press.
The V12 is HP’s latest innovation, using what is
known as LEPx technology to take digital printing
to the next level in terms of speed, precision and
efficiency.
The printing press offers up to 12 colours
(CMYK plus a range of special colours), so it offers
a wider design scope. With a quick set-up time and
less waste, it also enables sustainable production.
But that’s not all. What’s better than one?
Two! Soon after, we invested in another HP
Labels and packaging
for a better world
More and more companies are
trying to reduce the environmental
impact of their packaging. We are
seeing reusable packaging, plastic
being replaced with paper and
a greater focus on recyclability.
AT NORDVALLS, as part of the packaging industry,
we have a responsibility to work with customers,
recycling systems and other actors to collectively
reduce our burden on the environment and create
a more circular economy for packaging.
With this in mind, we organised a dedicated
Sustainability Day!
Customers from different businesses and
industries gathered in Malmö to explore more
environmentally friendly labels and packaging.
Nordvalls employees talked about new, innovative
materials and what to bear in mind when
choosing a label, along with packaging. New
and innovative label materials were compared to
standard materials while looking closely at their
CO 2 footprint.
WE INVITED REPRESENTATIVES from the
world’s largest and most efficient plastic sorting
facility, Site Zero (Svensk Plaståtervinning),
who talked about how the plant enables circular
recycling. Meanwhile, the trade association
Näringslivets Producentansvar talked about recycling
and what influences the recycling process.
The day was all about sharing knowledge,
discussions and networking. After a great lunch,
it was time for a workshop where guests had a
chance to apply information from the morning
session. It was great fun to see the groups really
getting stuck in!
One of our customers, Scan, ended the day
with a very interesting talk on its path towards
100% recyclable packaging. •
“Sustainability has always been a hot topic
in our popular Label Academy (customer
education programme) over the years,
which is why we organised a dedicated
Sustainability Day. It was great to receive
so much positive feedback from the event
and I am proud that we as a label supplier are taking
responsibility by helping to drive the development
of sustainable packaging forward. Many thanks to
everyone who came!”
Bini Sjöwall, Marketing Manager at Nordvalls

Closing the circle
As a link between customers and material suppliers, we promote
their programmes for recycling liners. This simple, cost-effective
service can help you progress towards achieving your climate goals.
1
You will receive collection bins
the size of EU pallets, which you
fill with PET and/or paper liner.
2
When the bins are full, they
will be collected from you.
4...and made into new materials and products.
3
The material will be recycled...
AS A MANUFACTURER, we will always rely
on various materials, dyes, chemicals and other
resources. We have a robust environmental and
sustainability programme covering everything
from chemical management, use of resources,
the UN 2030 Agenda, the CSRD and carbon
calculations to several certifications. But there are
more ways to make an impact in the supply chain.
Liner waste is generated during application,
when self-adhesive labels are separated from the
backing paper. This waste is unavoidable, but it
can be recovered and recycled.
Want to know more?
We will connect you with our material suppliers, who will be happy to tell you more!
Villa Blomstergren
We drive past the yellow rapeseed fields of Skåne
to visit a customer running a business from his home.
Though his business is small, he has a record
number of employees – around 9.7 million!
BJÖRN BLOMSTERGREN, who
CLIENT founded Villa Blomstergren, meets us
wearing a T-shirt featuring motifs of
bees and honeycombs. There is no mistaking that
he is a beekeeper and honey producer.
BEES FEED ON POLLEN and nectar and are
important pollinators in the natural world.
Pollinators play a crucial role in maintaining
biodiversity. Without them, many plant species
would die out, which would have a negative
impact on the whole ecosystem. They are also
vital for food production, as a third of all the
food we eat relies on pollination.
But bees are also endangered. The decline
in flower-rich habitats, increased use of chemical
plant protection products and climate change
are some of the threats to their existence.*
THESE BUSY LITTLE BEES that pollinate bring
billions in value to humankind – something we
take for granted because they do their job so
diligently for free. Bees work for three reasons:
to produce honey, feed larvae and take care
of their queen. They fly back and forth
from their colony collecting pollen for
about three weeks before one of
those trips becomes their last.
It is their destiny.
28
At the entrance we are greeted by shelves filled
with jars of honey in various beautiful amber
shades and flavours.
“I’ve been in contact with beekeepers more
or less all my life. My mother’s brother kept bees,
so my interest was caught early,” says Björn.
When Björn talks about his background, we
discover that he is a man rich in life experience.
He has been a diving instructor abroad, competed
in motorsport and worked at a law firm, but what
made him decide to become a beekeeper?
“I felt a calling to contribute to biological
diversity by taking care of the bees and leaving
a legacy for my children and grandchildren.
Without bees, we’re nothing!”
To produce a
teaspoon of honey,
a bee needs to visit
around 65,000 flowers!
Bees are usually divided into two groups – social
bees (honeybees and bumblebees) that form
colonies and solitary bees that live alone.
At Villa Blomstergren, there are just over 150
beehives for social bee colonies, with 50 more to
be added soon.
Björn Blomstergren (left) and Frederick Trip (right) get on well and Frederick often pops in and buys honey in his spare time.
30
BJÖRN TALKS PASSIONATELY about beekeeping
and his business while he lets us taste
honey with flavours of nougat, lemon and elderflower,
and watermelon. We also try bee pollen
and honeycomb straight from the hive. It’s all
amazingly good!
Wearing protective clothing, we go out into
the buzz surrounding the beehives. The bees are
clearly hard workers – the traffic in and out of
the hives is impressively organised, with everyone
staying in the right lane. We pick up a few frames
and see how far they have got with their
production. When a frame is full, the covering
wax is scraped off and discarded, before possibly
being flavoured and packaged.
BEES ARE COMPLEX little creatures. Each
colony starts by raising a queen, who then
lays about 2,000 eggs a day. A colony contains
around 12–13,000 bees during the winter season
and peaks at about 75,000. They all have a
special scent, so they can tell whether a bee is
from the same colony or an intruder.
“
My philosophy is to do business
with people I would want to greet
if I happened to see them in my
spare time.
”
NORDVALLS WANTS TO HELP raise awareness
of bees and their value in society, while also
benefiting one of our smaller, local customers.
We have therefore purchased a large quantity
of honey in batches of smaller jars to hand out
at events.
“I came into contact with Nordvalls via a
recommendation. You weren’t the cheapest, but
you were the best. Frederick, my contact, gave
quick feedback and always had answers to my
questions. He’s nice too, which helps! My philosophy
is to do business with people I would want
to greet if I happened to see them in my spare
time,” says Björn, smiling.
IN RECENT YEARS, the media has helped raise
awareness of the important impact of bees and
their lack of habitat, something that has been
evident in the number of new amateur beekeepers
emerging each year.
It takes understanding and
“ dedication to keep a colony alive.
”
“There are around 1,800 beekeepers in Skåne
alone. Many of them are hobby beekeepers with
two or three hives and colonies,” says Björn.
“Many of them have learned that beekeeping
is not easy. It takes understanding and dedication
to keep a colony alive. At Villa Blomstergren, we
offer beekeeping courses and mentors, for both
beginners and those who want to become better
beekeepers,” he adds.
Villa Blomstergren has been nominated for
the award of Sweden’s best honey shop in 2024
in the beekeeper’s own shop, farm shop and online
shop categories. This is awarded by the association
Svenska Bin and the industry organisation
Biodlingsföretagarna. •
Making your mark
“When I first heard the vision for the label,
my initial reaction was that it was barely
doable. But fortune favours the brave!”
MAKE A MARK is an annual exclusive innovation
project that invites 20 of the world’s top packaging
design agencies to developing fictional packaging
based on sustainability, luxury and innovation.
For each design, Leonhard KURZ contributed
the foils, Estal the glass and Avery Dennison
the label material. These global industry leaders
are also the ones who developed and initiated the
project.
In the 2023 edition, Norwegian design agency
OlssønBarbieri produced a packaging containing
a label with embossing, hot foil and a laser cut
pattern.
WE HAD THE HONOUR of printing and
producing this beautiful label. It was an intense
and exciting collaboration with Zetatrade as
project manager, Scandipack with laser cutting
expertise and Hinderer Mühlich.
We are proud to show the world the finished
result, and the fact that we in the Nordic region
have the capability to make really stylish and
advanced labels.
AT NORDVALLS, the project was run by Key
Account Manager Liselott Widerström.
“When I first heard the vision for the label,
my initial reaction was that it was barely doable.
But fortune favours the brave!”
The challenge was to find a label material that
did justice to the design but would not burn during
the laser cutting.
We printed the sheets digitally
“ one by one with extreme precision.
”
Liselott describes how they chose between three
cotton materials with different levels of sensitivity
to laser cutting. One material passed the test.
“We printed the sheets digitally one by one with
extreme precision. The combination of hot foil
and a special foil that shimmers in different dark
tones was just phenomenal. When I saw the final
result after seven months of intense work, I almost
got a little teary. It’s a truly unique label!” •
Expanding our
Label Academy
For several years, Nordvalls
has been running its Label
Academy – a half-day training
programme all about labels.
For the first time it has now
expanded beyond Swedish
borders to Norway!
WITH OPERATIONS established and customers
in Norway since spring 2023, it is only right that
the Norwegians should also benefit from Nordvalls’
unique Label Academy.
In spring 2024, we ran four Label Academy
sessions – two in Sweden and two in Norway
(in Oslo and Trondheim).
Nordvalls employees from different departments
shared their knowledge on everything from materials,
colours and sustainability to printing techniques
and trends. •
36

“
I’m new to the industry,
so this was valuable
knowledge for me.
“
”
Good to hear more about the
environmental aspect as it is in line
with our sustainability goals.
”
“I now have a greater
understanding of the printing process
and all its possibilities.” 37
