Christmas is a time for giving, forgiving, and opening our 

hearts. True love need not be measured by the price of a gift, 

but by the intention behind it. Something handmade, crafted 

with care and sincerity, often holds more beauty and meaning 

than anything money can buy. 

Yet, giving isn’t limited to a season. Each day presents 

opportunities to share kindness with others. A smile to a 

stranger, a brief conversation with someone you pass on the 

street, or a small gesture of support to someone in need - these 

acts carry more significance than we often realise. Instead of 

simply offering money to those less fortunate, we might give 

of our time, a meal, or a warm drink, sharing something that 

nourishes both body and soul. 

In a world so often focused on materialism, particularly during 

this season, it’s important to pause and reflect. Amersham, 

Chesham and surrounding South Buckinghamshire area, 

with its charming landscapes and close-knit communities, 

remind us to be grateful. This beautiful place encourages 

us to appreciate the blessings we have and to honour the 

connections we share with those around us. Whether it’s 

through creativity, business, service, or simple acts of goodwill, 

we recognise that we are all part of something greater, bound

Perfect Poppies in Honour of Remembrance Day 

A striking visual display of draped 

poppies handmade by staff and pupils 

of The Beacon, was sited in the heart 

of Old Amersham over the historical 

Market Hall. 

The unique installation was initiated and 

organised by Miss Michelle Jackson, Head of 

Art at The Beacon, as a symbol to commemorate 

Remembrance Day in honour of the Armed 

Forces and their families. 

The display, featuring over 3,200 hand crafted 

poppies, has already attracted the attention 

of locals, who have stopped to show their 

admiration for the poppies. It will be up until 

Wednesday 13th November for anyone to view 

in person.

their creative vision linking with

News from Community 

Champions at Tescos. 

Bj Tailor, the dedicated Community 

Champion at Amersham’s Tesco 

Superstore, is making waves as a local 

hero, known for his tireless support of 

various charitable causes. Recently, Bj 

even braved a skydive for Scannappeal, 

a cherished local charity. You’ll often 

spot him around the store, collecting 

donations with his charity bucket or 

running a pop-up book sale by the tills, 

all in the name of giving back. 

Community Champion in Gerrards Cross 

Tesco. 

Since stepping into her role as Community 

Champion at Gerrards Cross Tesco branch, 

Anabell has been actively engaging with local 

businesses and shops, introducing herself and 

inviting them to participate in her “Meet the 

High Street” project. This initiative features 

a photo board showcasing the local faces of 

the community, helping bring neighbours and 

businesses closer. 

Bj’s commitment to helping others goes 

beyond fundraising - he takes the time to 

connect with individuals, listening to their 

stories and supporting their causes. 

Recognizing his efforts, Bj was recently 

nominated for the Proud of Bucks Award, 

a well-deserved nod to his community 

impact. Through Tesco’s Stronger Starts 

initiative, Bj also extends support to local 

projects including Amersham School, 

Missenden Walled Garden, and Newtown 

School. 

In true community spirit, Bj has prepared a 

delightful hamper to brighten one lucky

Anabell has also joined forces with Tesco’s 

Stronger Starts projects, helping to promote 

awareness of various causes the Gerrards

CE Primary School in Amersham and Little 

Troopers, a project dedicated to helping 

military children adapt to the challenges of 

relocating schools. 

As the holiday season approaches, Anabell 

continues her close collaboration with 

Hillingdon Food Bank. The Tesco store will 

feature a toy bank at the front to help brighten 

the season for families in need, and on 

November 30th, from 9am to 4pm members 

of the Misbourne Matins Rotary Club will be 

outside the store to support these community 

efforts. Additionally, local schools are invited 

to spread holiday cheer by singing Christmas 

carols outside the store, raising funds for 

important projects.

This Christmas Rennie Grove Peace 

Hospice Care has launched a range of 

seasonal Christmas cards. 

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care provides 

care and support for adults and children with 

a progressive life-limiting illness, and those 

who care for them, in Buckinghamshire and 

Hertfordshire. 

The festive range of cards includes 11 different 

designs, including traditional designs such as a 

robin, three wise men and a flying Santa Claus. 

All money raised from the sale of the cards will go 

towards providing vital hospice care services to 

people living with life-limiting illnesses in the local 

area. 

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care supports 

its patients to live the best quality of life they 

can through the combination of outpatient, 

rehabilitation and supportive care services, Hospice 

at Home and inpatient care that is right for them. 

The charity is also there for those around its 

patients, including family, friends and carers, 

ensuring that everyone can receive the right 

support, wherever and whenever they need it. 

Care is provided at no cost to the patients and 

families and is made possible by the generous 

donations it receives from the local community.

Lionesses’ successful 

football season 

As Kings Church Amersham Lionesses 

finished a memorable football season, the 

girls’ football team has much to celebrate. 

From exciting victories on the field to individual 

recognitions, the team has grown stronger, more 

united, and is looking forward to even greater 

achievements in the coming season. 

Kicking Off with a Strong Start 

The season began with a bang as the teams 

participated in a highly competitive tournament. 

Facing tough opposition, the players displayed 

incredible teamwork, resilience, and skill. After 

a hard-fought series of matches, they secured a 

commendable 3rd place finish. This early success 

set the tone for the rest of the season which is full 

of many changes, specially the U13 who start to 

play a 11 a side.

If you know a girl who loves football or is 

interested in trying it for the first time, now is the 

perfect time to get involved! With plans for more 

tournaments, training sessions, and exciting 

matches this season, there’s plenty of opportunity

Skydiving for 

Scannappeal: 

A Leap of Courage, 

A Gift of Hope 

On Saturday, 28th September, seven 

brave individuals from the “Let Go and 

Skydive” team faced their fears head-on, 

leaping out of a plane in support of the 

local charity, Scannappeal. 

Blessed with perfect weather and sunshine, the 

team - BJ Tailor, Therese Cooklin, Neil Walker, 

David Brown, Rupert Cooklin, Ben Naylor-Smith, 

and Mimi Harker OBE - took on this adrenalinefilled 

challenge to make a lasting impact. 

Their skydiving adventure began with an 

exhilarating free fall from a mile and a half above 

the ground, reaching breathtaking speeds of 

120 mph within just 10 seconds. Once their 

parachutes deployed, they floated gracefully for 

another 5,000 feet, taking in the stunning views 

before making a safe landing. 

The team’s goal was to raise £10,000 for 

Scannappeal, a vital charity that supports 

life-saving medical equipment for local 

hospitals. Thanks to the incredible support from 

friends, family, the local community, businesses, 

and readers of the Together magazines, they 

surpassed this target, raising an impressive 

£11,375.64 (including Gift Aid).

offer is available until December 2024, and as a 

result, the team’s efforts have already generated 

£22,751.28. 

But the journey doesn’t stop here. With 

continued support, there is potential to reach 

an incredible £100,000 by the end of the year - 

a milestone that could make a profound

critical spinal surgery.

Buckinghamshire 

Scouts grow as 

demand for 

volunteers rises. 

The number of Scouts in Buckinghamshire 

has grown by over 6% since January 2022, 

with boys and girls aged 4 to 17 joining. 

As demand increases across the five sections— 

Squirrels (ages 4-5), Beavers (ages 6-8), Cubs 

(ages 8-10), Scouts (ages 10-14), and Explorers 

(ages 14-17)—more volunteers are needed. 

Adults can help directly with the children or 

take on behind-the-scenes roles like trustee, 

administrator, fundraiser, or IT support. 

Scouts offers over 250 activities, from abseiling 

to zorbing, helping children develop teamwork, 

confidence, and problem-solving skills. Cub 

Scout Lola shared her weekend experience, 

including climbing, kayaking, and making 

s’mores, calling it “ace.” 

Volunteer Nigel highlighted the need for more 

helpers, saying over 500 children are waiting 

to join. “Volunteering with Scouts is flexible,” 

he said, noting that roles can fit any schedule, 

with training available. Volunteers can make 

new friends, learn skills, and take pride in seeing 

children achieve things they didn’t think possible. 

Nigel added, “Volunteering gives you a sense of 

purpose and satisfaction.”

Community Fridges 

Another option if you are struggling for food is 

to use a Community Fridge. These are places 

that give out food collected from shops/ 

businesses that are close to or just reached 

their best before date (not use by dates). 

They are still good to eat but shops can’t sell 

them so to stop them going to landfill the 

food goes to the fridges - saving good food 

from being wasted! Below are a list of the 

community fridges available nearby and their 

opening times. 

• Chesham - Next to the Broadway Baptist 

Church, HP6 1EG. Wednesday 10am-12pm, 

Saturday 10am- 12pm. 

• High Wycombe - Oakridge Baptist Church,

Ambers of 

Amersham Fashion 

Show 

More than 200 ladies from across the 

county gathered at Ambers of Amersham 

on 8th and 9th October to see the 

semi-annual fashion show organised by 

Ambers of Amersham and Scannappeal. 

This well attended two-day event showcased the 

works of Marc Cain, Alison Sheri, Frank Lyman, 

Dea Kudibal and Jane Atelier’s autumn and 

winter collection. The carefully crafted fashion 

show portrayed a fantastic mix of winter brights, 

relaxed chic, and cocktail attire, with some 

fabulous red-carpet glamour closing the show 

to rapturous applause. 

The event was based at The Millstream, at a 

wonderful old mill built in the 15thcentury, which 

has been the home of Ambers of Amersham for 

59 years. The event was a runaway success, with 

all proceeds going to Scannappeal, whose latest 

appeal is to raise £410,000 for a fully equipped 

breast screening mobile unit for patients 

living in South Bucks. For more information on

Club Fundraiser

In the UK, 30% of clothing purchased each 

year ends up in landfill within the same 

year - equivalent to about £140 million worth 

of clothing being wasted annually without 

any wear. Equally alarming, according to 

the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 

denim takes up 5% of all landfill space, with 

every pair of jeans requiring 1,800 gallons of 

water to produce. 

Eager to continue their impactful work 

from the last two years, Chalfont St Peter’s 

Kindness Club is hosting their annual 

fundraising second-hand clothing sale on 

Saturday 16th November, from 10 am - 4 pm. 

The funds raised will support their donation 

point and help provide ongoing humanitarian 

aid to Ukraine. 

“Residents of neighbouring villages have 

once again been very generous this year,” 

said CSP resident Karen Dickson. “While 

we’ve continued sending essential aid, we’ve 

also set aside some stunning treasures for 

our sale - funky party pieces, vintage jackets, 

classy coats, and bright, colourful clothing to 

cheer up dreary days. We’ve got gorgeous 

leather boots, designer finds, and enough 

classic LEE denim to open a store! Everything 

is priced affordably to promote sustainable 

shopping, especially with the festive season 

approaching and budgets tighter.” 

This year, the sale will take place in the newly 

refurbished chapel at the Holy Cross site, 

which has been unused for six years. Tea, 

coffee, and cake will be available, along with 

a few tables of trinkets and treasures perfect 

for Christmas gifts, all supporting a great 

cause.

Time: Striking the Right 

Balance in a Digital Age 

In today’s world, technology plays a significant 

role in our children’s lives, but finding the right 

balance between screen time and real life can 

feel like a constant battle in our digital world. 

With so many devices at our children’s fingertips, 

how do we ensure they’re still getting fresh air, 

hands-on learning and time for study? 

Technology isn’t all bad – many online learning 

tools, like the UK-based BBC Bitesize app, are 

brilliant for helping pupils develop important skills. 

Covering subjects from Maths to History, this free 

app offers fun quizzes and videos that align with the 

UK curriculum, making it a great way to reinforce 

what your child is learning at school. 

However, too much recreational screen time can interfere 

with schoolwork, disrupt sleep and limit time spent 

outdoors, which is essential for a child’s wellbeing. 

This autumn, why not switch off the screens and 

enjoy some local adventures? Burnham Beeches

child can run, explore and let their imagination take 

flight. Woodland walks or a family day out at Black

Adam Connors 

visits Amersham 

School 

In September at Amersham School, 

I had the pleasure of attending the 

grand reopening of the wonderful 

library. 

Our library had been closed for a little while 

due to covid and was awaiting a much-needed 

makeover, so it’s great to see it now equipped 

with a range of plush new seating, cosy reading 

nooks and independent study zones. With 

widespread library closures being a huge concern 

in the local community right now, it’s reassuring 

to know that my school are investing in the thing 

that’s most important to me: books! 

For the event, we had a visit from Carnegienominated 

author Adam Connors who cut the 

ribbon! I got to hear Connors speak about his 

new book ‘The Girl Who Broke the Sea’. Tickets 

disappeared very quickly, lots of people showed 

up and all the seats were full. In teaching us 

about the inspiration for his book, Connors 

showed us the inner workings of neuroscience 

with a quite extraordinary effect involving what 

colours we could see and how our minds play 

tricks on us through illusions. This was fascinating 

and really gave me a new perspective on what 

I see around me. Connors mentioned that his 

books have close links to science, a world full 

of computers, phones and all things ‘technical’ 

which I thought was wonderful to listen to, now 

knowing that it is possible to link these two 

together to make a captivating an interesting 

story. Connors shared his personal experience 

with epilepsy and how this influenced his book. 

Listening to him speaking was very inspirational 

for me to develop my creative work not only 

in English but for my own creative imagination 

outside of school. I even got to purchase my 

own signed copy of the book! 

It was an amazing experience and it’s wonderful 

to see our school library flourishing now that it’s 

filled with students at break and lunch times.

GARDENING 

Plenty of jobs to do in the garden in 

November. This is a time to plant spring 

bulbs so that your spring colour will 

emerge next year. 

1. November is the ideal time to plant tulips 

in pots and borders for fabulous colour next 

spring. Also daffodils, crocuses and other 

spring bulbs can be planted. 

2. Sow salad on a sunny windowsill to give you 

a supply of fresh leaves through winter. 

3. Plant up patio pots and windowboxes with 

violas, cyclamens and colourful evergreens 

like heucheras and heather to give you winter 

colour when the weather is dark and gloomy. 

4. Lift dahlias once the first frosts have 

blackened their leaves. Leave the tubers to 

dry, then store them in trays under a layer of 

compost to keep them from drying out. 

5. Mulch beds with a thick layer of organic 

matter, such as garden compost or well-rotted 

farmyard manure. 

6. Clean bird feeders and fill them with 

oil-rich seeds like sunflower hearts and suet 

balls to support birds through winter. Keep 

bird baths topped up so that birds have 

somewhere to drink and bathe. 

This time of year - the garden is resting. But for 

you it’s a time to plan for next year and there 

are still crops to harvest, shrubs and bulbs to 

plant. 

1. Choose some shrubs with winter colour and 

scent eg Christmas box (Sarcococca confusa), 

wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) and witch 

hazel (Hamamelis) all look and smell gorgeous 

at this time of year. 

2. There’s still time to plant spring bulbs like 

crocuses, daffodils and tulips for masses of 

colourful flowers in spring. 

3. Lift and divide large clumps of rhubarb to 

rejuvenate the plants and give you delicious 

desserts for years to come. Make sure each 

new section has an ‘eye’ or large bud to 

provide next year’s shoots. 

4. If you need to prune Japanese maples, 

now’s the time while they are dormant. 

5. Prune climbing roses, removing any dead 

wood, tying in new shoots and cutting back 

flowered side shoots by two-thirds of their 

length. 

6. When the weather’s too cold for gardening, 

start planning next year’s gardening. Settle 

down in an armchair with a cup of tea and your 

notebook, and let your imagination run wild!
