Alserkal

Noura Alserkal, UAE-based artist, blends material and immaterial

elements to explore family history and hidden narratives

through experimental art.

info@nouraalserkal.com

nouraalserkal

Noura Alserkal, an innovative UAE-based artist and

jewelry designer, holds a Master’s degree in Jewellery

and Metal from the prestigious Royal College of Art

(RCA). Known for pushing the boundaries of conventional

art, Alserkal’s work intricately explores the intersections

between the tangible and the abstract, as well as the known

and the mysterious. Through a distinctive practice that blends

archival research with storytelling, she delves into personal

and cultural histories, unearthing hidden or potentially taboo

narratives. This process results in works that are as intellectually

stimulating as they are visually compelling, encouraging

viewers to question and engage with the deeper layers of

meaning embedded in each piece.

One of Alserkal’s notable career milestones was winning

the 2018 RCA x Swarovski Design Project, which granted her

the opportunity to present her work through a design talk in

Wattens, Austria. This recognition underscored her capacity

for combining artistry with innovative craftsmanship and

solidified her reputation as a bold, forward-thinking creator.

Her earlier participation in the 2015 Dubai-Berlin Exchange

Program exemplified her collaborative spirit and adaptability,

where she worked alongside Berlin-based designers to contribute

to the Dubai-Berlin Fashion Show. This cross-cultural

engagement emphasized her ability to bridge diverse artistic

influences while maintaining her unique voice.

In 2014, Alserkal’s dedication to fostering artistic growth

and cross-cultural dialogue was highlighted when she took

part in the Cultural Excellence Fellowship. Organized by the

Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) in collaboration

with the British Council, this program supported her drive for

interdisciplinary learning and deepened her approach to integrating

personal heritage into her art.

Alserkal’s work is defined by her experimental techniques

and her refusal to adhere strictly to the dichotomy of fine art

versus commercial design. Her creations often incorporate

both material and immaterial elements, challenging traditional

notions of what constitutes “art” and blurring lines between

craftsmanship and conceptual expression. Her keen interest in

revealing the unseen and embracing the beauty of imperfection

sets her apart as an artist who celebrates both the visible

and hidden facets of life.

Her approach is underpinned by an unwavering commitment

to process-driven experimentation. By weaving stories

of her family’s genealogy and UAE’s cultural heritage into her

pieces, she invites audiences to reconsider their understanding

of identity, memory, and art. Her innovative practice is

seen as a modern interpretation of storytelling that preserves

and reimagines traditional narratives, transforming them

into art that resonates on both personal and universal levels.

Through her work, Alserkal not only contributes to the artistic

landscape of the UAE but also inspires dialogue that bridges

cultural and creative boundaries.

the photos that she truly loves are the ones that conveyed

beauty and emotion, artistically. Two emotions are the key

driving forces behind her work. First is the desire to help conserve

the beautiful spaces she felt so privileged to see and

experience. Second is the desire to inspire in people a love of

wild animals and not fear. She felt that too many wildlife images

showed them as scary and ferocious beasts, imagery that

she felt was contrary to any desire to want to protect them.

Her work celebrates nature through the beauty of its wild

beasts, photographed in timeless monochrome, to create a

vision of a time past. She portrays the emotions that she felt

while experiencing that moment in the wild, so that viewers of

both the controlled precision of design and the unpredictable

nature of organic growth.

One of Hazbar’s most compelling projects is Accretions,

an installation where she submerges hand-forged steel armatures

into the sea to encourage the growth of marine organisms

such as corals, mollusks, and crustaceans. Over time,

these life forms deposit calcium carbonate on the structures,

turning them into striking, biologically enriched light fixtures.

Each piece is shaped by the specific conditions of its underwater

environment, embodying a unique fusion of human

ingenuity and natural formation. This project highlights Hazbar’s

fascination with collaboration between the built and

natural worlds, showcasing how designers can harness natural

systems to create functional, beautiful, and sustainable

objects. By relinquishing control to natural processes, Hazbar

redefines the artist’s role as a facilitator who works with nature

rather than solely manipulating it.

Hazbar’s dedication to exploring the temporality of materials

extends beyond Accretions. Her body of work often

examines how environments evolve over time and how this

evolution can be mirrored in art and architecture. The delicate

balance she strikes between control and organic freedom creates

pieces that are not just static objects but living explorations

of change. Hazbar’s process reflects her commitment

to environmental consciousness and sustainable design, inviting

audiences to consider how human creation interacts with

natural ecosystems. This dialogue between art and ecology

is central to her practice, which frequently raises awareness

about environmental resilience and adaptation.

Her work has been showcased in a range of international

exhibitions, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Art Dubai, and

the Sikka Art Fair, cementing her reputation as an influential

figure in contemporary art and design. Publications such as

Architectural Digest and the Financial Times have featured

her projects, underscoring her impact on global art and architecture

discussions.

Beyond exhibitions, Hazbar’s pieces often serve as a call to

rethink conventional approaches to architecture and art, emphasizing

the importance of material stories and the temporal

nature of all creations. Her installations prompt viewers to

engage with the natural processes behind the transformation

of materials, making her work not only visually arresting but

intellectually stimulating. Through her multifaceted career,

Hazbar continues to inspire a deeper connection between art,

design, and the environment, positioning her as a prominent

voice in both regional and international art circles.

that critically examine the UAE’s evolution through

industrial growth. Residing in Dubai, she completed

place, and the consequences of industrialization. Her art often

preservation. Through her work, she documents the changing

landscape of her home country while encouraging a broader

discourse on environmental and cultural sustainability.

Zeinab Alhashemi has made significant contributions to the

art world, exhibiting her work in prominent venues such as

the Sharjah Biennial, Dubai Design Week, and the Sikka Art
