Basically the crosse resembles a hockey stick except it has a long shank curved round at the end with a net from the curve to the shank. This original aboriginal sport . has been popular in both The early days of the Lacrosse team, around 1969. Kensington Market and Alexandra Park. Since the 1960's the St. Christopher House Lacrosse team has represented the area in a province wide community league. One of the main organizers of the team was Bob Ellis, director of Neighbourhood House. Bob started with the program in the early 70's. Back then the Lacrosse programme was made up of house league teams including Novices, Peewees, Bantams, Midget and Juvenile teams. The Lacrosse team allowed all different ethnic groups to mingle. The kids learned to adapt and communicate effectively, brought together . by teamwork and mutual respect for everybody's abilities. During the 70's the St. Christopher House Lacrosse teams were recognized as being among the best in Southern Ontario. "Back then in it's glory days the team represented the ethnic or racial mixture of Kensington and Alexandra Park", recalls Paul · Rebelo, a Kensington resident since childhood. Paul remembers those days as a time of meeting new friends -- a period of enjoyment for the inner city youth. It kept the kids away from mis- .---------------------. chief. Bob Ellis and Gary Martin were great role models for those boys. Paul said "Mr BMC Ellis was son-of like a father: Everything he said had two meanings. "A" Lacrosse for the Scarborough Saints. Today he supports the local team with financial contributions and volunteer work -- just giving back some of what he received from the experience. The currentteam is handled by Gary Martin and Danny Atkinson who have volunteered their services to the Alexandra Park West-Metro Lacrosse Association. They welcome all kids into the programme. Scadding Court also has house league Lacrosse after school. It's a great idea - bringing together a diverse group of kids with a positive activity. It can only contribute to a healthy neighbourhood.
