40 th anniversary 

Celebrating our passion for excellence! 

After experiencing several quiet years and 

a strong recovery in 2013, Sibarth Real 

Estate is celebrating its 40th anniversary. 

And how did they do this? With a number of 

significant sales, whilst at the same time continually 

nurturing the desire to share their love of 

St Barths with their clients. 

Christian Wattiau, head of Sibarth Real Estate, 

arrived at the island on a sailboat more than 30 

years ago… « At the time, St Barths was not that 

well known. However, the unspoilt countryside, 

the beautiful sky and sunsets and the kindness 

of the locals immediately seduced this young 

man… In fact, the desire to share this extraordinary 

island was stronger than the appeal of its 

potential for developing tourism. This was the 

key motivation of the founders of Sibarth, Brook 

and Roger Lacour, when they started the adventure 

back in 1975. 

When I joined Brook and Roger, the company 

was still in its early stages. I have to admit that 

we started with a tiny office! We did everything, 

from photocopying and visits, to translating 

deeds. Even though we have grown since then, 

even though I became partner of Sibarth Real 

Estate in 1997, then owner in 2008 and even 

though over the years we have signed most of the 

significant sales, we are still a small, united team 

that works in harmony with the island. 

It might seem a bit pretentious for the director of 

the largest real estate brokerage on the island to 

say that we are a small team… In fact it is one of 

the secrets of our success, and of the level of trust 

that we have managed to create with our clients. 

Some of them, with whom we have formed 

friendly relationships, do not hesitate to use our 

services for multiple transactions, whether for 

purchase or resale! 

Later, in 2014, our growth encouraged me to 

welcome two new partners. In fact not so new, as 

Chrys Rollo and Zarek Honneysett had already 

worked at the agency for several years, coming 

from different backgrounds: « new information 

technology » for Chrys, who comes from France 

and an intimate knowledge of the island for 

Zarek, who grew up here. This move brings a 

wider approach and a change but above all a way 

of gently growing Sibarth Real Estate. 

Après des années un peu calmes et une reprise bien 

amorcée en 2013, Sibarth Real Estate célèbre cette 

année son quarantième anniversaire… Et comment ? 

En réalisant nombre de ventes significatives, tout en 

gardant le souci constant de partager avec ses clients 

son amour de St Barth. 

A la tête de Sibarth Real Estate, Christian Wattiau 

est arrivé sur l’île, à la voile il y a plus de 30 ans… 

« A l’époque, St Barth était bien peu connue. Mais 

cette nature sauvage, la beauté du ciel et des couchers 

de soleil, la gentillesse des habitants ont immédiatement 

séduit le jeune homme…. En fait, plus qu’un 

potentiel de développement touristique à défricher, 

c’est avant tout l’envie de faire découvrir et partager 

notre plaisir d’être sur cette île extraordinaire qui a 

motivé les fondateurs de Sibarth, Brook et Roger 

Lacour, à se lancer dans l’aventure en 1975. 

Lorsque j’ai rejoint Brook et Roger, nous en étions 

encore aux balbutiements de l’entreprise, la première 

agence immobilière de l’île. Il faut avouer que nous 

avions commencé dans un bureau minuscule ! Nous 

y faisions tout, des photocopies aux visites en passant 

par la traduction des actes. Même si nous avons 

grandi depuis, même si je suis devenu associé de 

Sibarth Real Estate en1997, puis propriétaire en 

2008, même si nous avons réalisé au fil des ans 

la plupart des ventes record, nous restons une petite 

équipe, soudée et réellement en osmose avec l’île. 

Cela peut paraître un peu prétentieux pour le dirigeant 

de la plus grande agence immobilière de St Barth 

de dire que nous sommes une petite équipe… En 

fait, c’est un des secrets de notre réussite, de la 

confiance que nous avons réussi à créer avec nos 

clients. Certains d’entre eux, avec qui nous avons 

noué des relations amicales, n’hésitent pas à faire 

appel à nos services pour de multiples transactions, 

que ce soit en achat ou en revente! 

Plus tard, en 2014, notre développement m’a incité 

à accueillir deux nouveaux associés. Pas si nouveaux 

que ça puisque Chrys Rollo et Zarek Honneysett, 

travaillent à l’agence depuis de nombreuses années, avec 

des profils différents : très « nouvelles technologies » 

pour Chrys qui vient de la métropole, et une 

connaissance intime de l’île pour Zarek qui a passé 

son enfance ici. C’est une ouverture plus large encore 

sur le monde, une transmission aussi, mais surtout 

une façon de faire avancer tout en douceur Sibarth 

Real Estate.

2015 has been particularly satisfying with the number and sizes of the transactions 

that we have closed and also from the satisfaction expressed by our 

international clientele, yet something which is also professionally demanding. 

The strategy of the agency has never been to 

increase sales at any cost but rather to improve 

our clients’ satisfaction. On many occasions, 

we behave as a true island guides for our potential 

customers, helping them to discover the 

magical places of the island that truly deserve 

to be recognized. 

Another key to Sibarth Real Estate’s success 

is that we don’t behave like traditional estate 

agents! Living on this 25km² island, we know 

how fragile its ecological balance is. The preservation 

of areas, nature and the environment 

remains a constant concern for our team. We 

much prefer to prioritize projects that respect 

the harmonious development of the island... 

Our island needs to be able to breathe, it needs 

its natural areas and we sincerely believe that 

this vision is perfectly compatible with the role 

of a real estate advisor, as we believe we have 

demonstrated over the years. This is not just 

a nice « politically correct » speech but a true 

reality, shared by a large number of inhabitants 

and economic players on the island. 

And now we have this anniversary! 40 years 

in business in St Barths and year after year we 

maintain our position as market leader. 

2015 has been particularly satisfying with the

Our role is not just to match a house to a 

client. We provide a fast and efficient technical 

and logistics support and offer comprehensive

of the Hotel Le Toiny, and the Carl Gustaf. 

These properties will undergo a makeover, 

attract new guests, generate new desires… And 

we will be happy to help these newcomers 

discover our little piece of Paradise!»

multiplier à tout prix les ventes, mais plutôt d’optimiser 

la satisfaction des clients. A maintes occasions, 

nous nous conduisons en véritables guides de l’île pour 

nos clients potentiels, leur faisant découvrir les lieux 

magiques de l’île, ceux qui méritent d’être connus… 

Une autre clé de la réussite de Sibarth Real Estate, 

c’est que nous ne nous comportons pas comme des 

agents immobiliers classiques! Vivant sur cette île de 

25km², nous savons combien son équilibre écologique 

est fragile. La préservation des lieux, de la nature, 

de l’habitat reste un souci constant pour notre 

équipe. Nous préférons de loin privilégier les projets 

respectant le développement harmonieux de l’île… 

Notre île a besoin d’un poumon vert, ses espaces 

naturels, et nous pensons très sincèrement que cette 

vision est parfaitement compatible avec le rôle d’un 

conseil en immobilier, ce que nous pensons démontrer 

au fil des ans. Il ne s’agit pas simplement d’un joli 

discours politiquement correct mais d’une vraie réalité, 

partagée par une grande partie des habitants et 

des acteurs économiques de l’île. 

Et puis il y a cet anniversaire ! 40 ans d’activité 

à St Barth et nous maintenons année après année 

notre position de leader du marché. 

Cette année 2015 a été particulièrement satisfaisante, 

par le nombre et la taille des transactions réalisées 

mais aussi par la satisfaction exprimée par notre 

clientèle internationale, pourtant exigeante en terme 

de professionnalisme. 

Notre métier ne se limite pas à la mise en relation 

entre un bien et un acquéreur : nous apportons un 

réel support technique et logistique, rapide et efficace, 

pour offrir un conseil global à nos clients qui 

nous sollicitent pour leurs investissements immobiliers. 

Cette année 2015 a aussi été marquée par des 

ventes emblématiques comme l’Hôtel « Le Toiny »

Living by the sea 

A diver’s paradise for some, surfing for others, 

often calm and crystalline, sometimes synonymous 

with excitement, the sea is the ultimate 

playground on the island. In the past, the sea 

was vital to St Barths as it was the only transportation 

route before the arrival of the planes. 

Many earned their living from fishing. Even 

today, seafood features on restaurant menus 

across the island! St Barths experienced a prosperous 

era thanks to the maritime trade on 

beautiful schooners. The link between sea and 

man is undeniably strong on this little piece 

of paradise. There are plenty of attractions, 

white sandy beaches, natural swimming pools, 

dreamy scenery… And plenty of activities too! 

On the surface, the surfers leap onto their 

boards as soon as a swell is up. Under the water, 

the reefs offer a spectacle of marine life, where 

tropical fish can be admired through curious 

masks. It is a wonderful, peaceful world that 

exists just a few fathoms from the shore. 

Spot de plongée ou de surf pour certains, souvent 

calme et cristalline, parfois synonyme de sensations 

fortes, la mer est le terrain de jeux par excellence sur 

une île. Autrefois, unique voie de transport, avant 

l’arrivée de l’avion, la mer fut vitale pour les Saint- 

Barths. Nombreux sont ceux qui survécurent grâce à 

la pêche. Aujourd’hui encore, les produits de la mer 

font recette dans les restaurants de l’île ! 

St Barth connut également une belle période de 

prospérité grâce au commerce maritime sur de belles 

goélettes. Le lien entre la mer et les hommes est donc 

fort sur ce petit paradis terrestre. Des attraits il y en 

a, plages de sable blanc, piscines naturelles, paysages 

de rêve... Et les activités ne manquent pas. 

A la surface, les surfeurs enfourchent leur planche dès 

qu’une houle s’annonce. Sous l’eau, les récifs offrent 

le spectacle de la vie marine où les poissons tropicaux 

se laissent admirer à travers les masques des curieux. 

C’est un univers merveilleux qui vit paisiblement à 

quelques brasses du rivage.

However, over the years, hurricanes and human 

activities have gradually tarnished the sea 

bed, that was once so abundant. Reefs, corals 

and fish are a fragile ecosystem. Hence why, in 

recent years, projects have emerged in order to 

preserve these important resources. 

The Nature Reserve leads studies on the environment 

and aims to raise awareness with the 

population. Protected marine areas have been 

created and more recently, fishing rules have 

been introduced. 

Other passionate volunteers often embark 

upon their own projects. Under the initiative 

of two island locals, new associations have been 

created to restore the coral reefs, using two 

different techniques. Didier Laplace, ardent 

defender of biodiversity and founder of 

« The Coral Restoration Project St Barths » 

replants coral cuttings in an underwater 

nursery and Turenne Laplace, a professional 

diver, has created “Ouanalao Reef” and uses 

Biorock, a method of accelerated formation 

of limestone, using a low current of electricity 

in an underwater metal structure. All these 

volunteers are working towards the same goal: 

the sustainable development of the island. 

Cependant au fil des ans, cyclones et activités 

humaines ternissent peu à peu les fonds marins, 

auparavant si abondants. Récifs, coraux et poissons 

représentent un écosystème fragile. Voilà pourquoi 

depuis plusieurs années, des projets voient le jour 

dans le but de préserver ces ressources si importantes. 

La Réserve Naturelle mène des études sur l’environnement 

et différentes actions de sensibilisation auprès 

de la population. Des zones marines protégées ont 

été créées et, plus récemment, une règlementation de 

la pêche vient d’être instaurée. 

D’autres passionnés, souvent bénévoles, entreprennent 

à leur manière. A l’initiative de deux natifs de l’île, 

de nouvelles associations ont vu le jour ayant pour but 

la restauration de récifs coralliens via deux techniques 

différentes. Didier Laplace, fervent défenseur de la 

biodiversité et fondateur de « The Coral Restoration 

Project St Barth », réimplante des boutures de coraux, 

sous forme de nurserie et Turenne Laplace, plongeur 

professionnel, avec « Ouanalao Reef » a choisi le 

Biorock, procédé permettant de former du calcaire en 

accéléré grâce à l’envoi d’électricité à faible puissance 

dans une structure métallique en mer. Toutes ces 

volontés s’inscrivent dans un but commun : 

le développement durable de l’île.

Just imagine the pleasure of walking 

down a couple of steps in the morning

or stroll along the huge, white sandy 

beach of Flamands, probably the most 

beautiful in all of St Barths… 

The villa seduces visitors with its peaceful 

atmosphere, yet it is located in one of the 

most popular places on the island, that to date 

remains very traditional and authentic. The village, 

slightly off the main roads of the island, 

offers many opportunities to relax, either in a 

spa, sunbathing on the beach or enjoying fresh 

lobster in a waterfront restaurant. 

Built over two levels to make the most of 

the space, you enter the house via a covered, 

raised porch, typical of Caribbean architecture. 

Thanks to the imposing sliding doors, the 

house is open and serene. Inside, the layout 

is simple and practical, not at all ostentatious. 

A large kitchen is equipped with plenty of 

cupboards and a beautiful, large dining table 

makes it an ideal place for either lively or casual 

dining with friends or family. 

The house has recently been repainted and 

decorated, in a more contemporary style: 

bright white walls and ceilings and decorations

the owners have put a coir rug over the wide 

wooden floor boards that resemble grey parquet. 

Attractive anthracite grey woven rattan furniture, 

with deep, soft cushions are perfect for 

sitting back and relaxing, whilst enjoying the 

view over the sea.

elle est pourtant située dans l’un des lieux les 

plus prisés de l’île tout en restant très traditionnel 

et authentique. Le village, légèrement à l’écart des 

grands axes de l’île, offre de multiples possibilités de 

se détendre dans un spa ou sur un bain de soleil et 

de savourer une langouste fraîche dans un restaurant 

de front de mer. 

Construite sur deux étages pour maximiser l’espace, 

on pénètre dans la maison par une belle entrée 

surmontée d’une avancée couverte, typique de 

l’architecture des Caraïbes. Ouverte sur toute la largeur 

de la maison, grâce à d’imposantes baies coulissantes, 

la pièce à vivre respire la sérénité. Ici, rien d’ostentatoire, 

c’est un aménagement simple et pratique. 

Une grande cuisine avec beaucoup de rangements et 

une immense et belle table de salle à manger, pour 

des repas animés et décontractés en famille ou entre

The owner Lindy, has endeavored to find the 

finest materials, inspired by traditional Caribbean 

architecture. As such, the main house is 

surrounded by verandahs, where you can relax

There is nothing better than sitting around the 

dining table with family or friends! With its 

high ceiling and beautiful white painted beams, 

its honey toned Bourgogne limestone floor, its 

Murano glass chandelier which brings touches 

of color and its attractive dark wood antique 

furniture… It is a very congenial room! 

The spacious master bedroom is adjoining, 

with a wonderful bathroom and outside shower 

that integrates perfectly into the surrounding

Christian Wattiau and his team have chosen a photograph 

by Pierre Carreau as the front cover of their annual sales brochure. 

This long-term island resident creates a unique artistic work based on the study of the infinite variety of shapes and textures 

formed by the waves. Fascinated by this natural, unique phenomenon which brings this liquid element to life, he has 

dedicated himself to capturing images which truly reflect his artistic intentions. Beyond the obvious aesthetic qualities, 

Pierre, above all, wants his project « Aquaviva » to impart a positive and stimulating energy. The desire to share these good 

vibes, both powerful and delicate at the same time, is largely influenced by the exceptional way of life that is found on the 

island of St Barths. 

The right techniques, together with his knowledge of the waves, allow the artist to capture and immortalize something that 

is naked to the visible eye. The photographic material acts as an ideal prism for transforming reality into stunning pictures. 

Pierre Carreau’s work is regularly displayed in Saint Barths and New York. It recently seduced the famous art dealer Charles 

Saatchi, who purchased a significant number of prints for his collection. In 2016, an exhibit will be scheduled in his London 

art gallery, the famous Saatchi Gallery.
