Bikes on buses ban
Online poll gives it
the thumbs down
• By Dylan Smits
LUCAS KROGULEC used to
bike to work in the mornings
and take the bus home.
But no more.
The 31-year-old is disappointed
about the ban on using
bus bike racks.
And he is not alone. A
starnews.co.nz poll shows 87
per cent against the ban while
only 13 per cent agreed, out of
684 respondents.
Krogulec was not surprised
by the poll results as he sees
keeping the bike racks as the
obvious choice.
“I feel like a bit of my
freedom is being taken away
and I’m being pushed out this
mode of transport,” he said.
Buses nationwide can no
longer carry bikes at any time of
day due to safety concerns from
New Zealand Transport Agency
around front-mounted bike
racks obscuring headlights.
Krogulec used to bike
everyday, from his home in
Cashmere near the Sign of the
Takahe, downhill to work in
Sydenham.
Arts Centre
food truck
consent
application
paused
• By Dylan Smits
THE CONSENT application
for the controversial food truck
market at The Arts Centre is
on hold while the terms are
negotiated with the city council.
The Arts Centre is proposing
to host a maximum of 33 food
trucks operating for up to 12
hours a day, seven days a week.
City council head of planning
Mark Stevenson said the
council and The Arts Centre are
discussing the proposal before the
resource consent application is
officially submitted.
“As the Arts Centre is a heritage
setting, consideration must
be given to potential impacts on
heritage values,” he said.
It includes how the food truck
market would impact the visibility
of The Arts Centre’s heritage
buildings.
The Central City Business Association
strongly opposes the
market saying the competition
will harm business.
They are calling for the end of
city council funding to The Arts
Centre if the market goes ahead.
Another sticking point for
association members is the
rates they already pay towards
subsidising The Arts Centre.
Bear-napped Big Ted back on duty
• By Daniel Alvey
BIG TED the roadside teddy
has returned to work after
disappearing at the weekend.
Ted was adopted by Chris
Warren and his family after
being found on the side of the
road.
Since just before Easter, Ted
has been working to promote
Warren’s roadside stall at the
weekends.
But on Saturday afternoon
Ted disappeared from his
Springston Rolleston Rd stand
between Lincoln and Rolleston.
When the family checked
their CCTV cameras, Warren
HOME AGAIN:
Big Ted spends
his weekends
on the side of
the road selling
eggs.
was able to get a clear shot of a
person in their driveway.
His wife Anna posted the image
on a number of community
Facebook pages and was given
information about the person.
Warren passed the information
on to police and on Monday
Ted was returned.
Warren was told by police
on Monday Big Ted had been
found.
“The cops rang and said Big
Ted was sitting at the picnic
table outside the front of our
house.”
Warren thanked the police
and community for getting Big
Ted back home.
tourists or other people visiting
our city if that’s what they see
who owns all these buildings, but
they’ve got to be held a bit more
Standing desks won’t save
us – we just need to move
THE STANDING desk is often
touted, especially for office
workers, as the panacea to our
sedentary lifestyles.
However, a recent study has
found standing for long periods
might not be much better than
sitting.
Lead author at the University of
Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and
Health and deputy director of the
Charles Perkins Centre’s Mackenzie
Wearables Research Hub, Dr
Matthew Ahmadi, told Sunday
Morning’s Jim
Mora there were
other ways for
those with a
sedentary lifestyle
to improve their
cardiovascular
health.
“Standing is
certainly better Matthew
than sitting, but Ahmadi
standing by itself will not necessarily
lower your risk for heart
disease,” Ahmadi said.
“To do that, we will need to mix
in other forms of activity that gets
the body moving.”
Ahmadi’s team recently
published a study examining
100,000 participants who wore a
smartwatch-like accelerometer on
their wrist for a week using data
from the UK Biobank.
His team followed them up for
around eight years to document
their hospitalisations and risk of
mortality due to heart disease and
DESK DILEMMA: A recent study has found the benefits of
circulatory conditions.
Not only were the health
benefits of standing desk
overblown, but their research
no
venue
hire
also found that long periods of
standing still may increase the
risk for certain types of circulatory
conditions, such as varicose
veins or deep vein thrombosis,
due to blood pooling in the
lower part of the body.
Their findings buck previous
research that has touted the
benefits of standing over sitting.
Ahmadi said this was because
most past research only looked
at short-term changes or “soft
endpoints” such as improved
blood pressure and insulin
sensitivity.
Ahmadi’s team however took
a long-term view.
“What we found was [that],
when we looked at the risk of
hospitalisation . . . standing by
itself didn’t lower the risk for
these diseases.”
To improve cardiovascular
health, standing wasn’t enough,
you needed to get the body
moving, he said.
“That’s typically done most
efficiently through activity that
gets us moving, like ambulation
and walking.
“We can accumulate
improved cardiovascular health
just from doing our day-to-day
activities, and this can be such
as household chores or even
gardening outdoors. – RNZ
Bikes on buses ban: ‘The public is
saying this is the wrong decision’
• From page 1
It took Krogulec 20min to get
to work. He would bike home
three days a week, which took
40min.
The other two days Krogulec
would put his bike on the rack
and bus home to give himself
a break from the tiring uphill
route.
Since the ban went into effect,
he feels the need to drive to and
from work.
“I want the option of whether I
bike or bus home because cycling
uphill every day would be hard
work,” said Krogulec.
He would also be forced to
bike home during bad weather
or find other transport if he got
a flat tyre since he can no longer
take the bus.
The business analyst moved
from Warsaw, Poland, to
Christchurch in June with his
Kiwi partner Rachel.
“Back where I’m from, it’s
perfectly normal to have bikes on
buses. I feel like this is limiting
me from combining transport
options,” he said.
Krogulec believes the ban
should be lifted during daylight
hours if the concern is about
OPPOSITION: A starnews.co.nz poll shows 87 per cent against the ban on bikes on buses,
while only 13 per cent agreed, out of 684 respondents.
headlight obstruction.
“They should have given more
notice too that this was happening.
It was very sudden and
didn’t give people much time to
plan other options.”
The national ban on bike racks,
which was implemented on
Friday until further notice, has
provoked an outcry from cyclists
and cycling advocates.
Spokes Canterbury executive
member Allan Taunt said
the poll result reflects cyclists’
THE
POLL
frustrations.
“The public is saying that this
is the wrong decision. This is
preventing people from travelling
the way they want.”
Taunt believes use of the bike
racks should be allowed during
the day or on buses where headlights
are not obscured.
“When buses don’t have their
lights on it’s quite reasonable to
allow bikes on the front. I don’t
know why there’s a problem
there.”
Bus operators across New
Zealand, including Metro,
unanimously agreed with
the NZ Transport Agency Waka
Kotahi’s safety assessment and
implemented a complete ban
until the concerns raised by bike
racks can be addressed.
The decision follows the initial
night-time restriction put in
place on November 2.
“We are very disappointed
with the situation and understand
the significant impacts this
will have on our community,”
said Environment Canterbury
public transport operations
manager Derek Walsh.
“However, we also understand
why our operators need to comply
with legislation.”
ECan staff are working
with NZTA and operators
to determine the best way to
undertake assessments of bike
racks with a timeline for the
testing currently unknown.
The city council has committed to
The Arts Centre declined to answer
questions from The Star about the
the application being put on hold might
affect plans for the market.
Said a spokesperson: “We continue
No decision on publicly notifying
Demolition of trickling
filters to get under way
DEMOLITION OF the Bromley
Wastewater Treatment Plant’s firedamaged
trickling filters is about to start.
The city council has appointed Southern
Demolition to carry out the work, which
will start on Thursday next week and is
expected to take four to five months to
complete.
The demolition is the first stage of
physical work to replace the filters with
an activated sludge reactor, which will fix
long-standing odour issues.
City council head of three waters Gavin
Hutchison said it marks the start of a new
phase for the project.
“Since settling with our insurers we’ve
been focused on getting demolition
started. We know how important a permanent
fix is to the local community, and
we’ve been working hard to get boots on
the ground as soon as possible.
“Residents will be able to see changes
at the site happening very quickly. We’re
aiming to have the walls of the trickling
filters down by Christmas and in the new
year we’ll shift our focus to removing the
foundations.
“The next stage of work will be
construction of the activated sludge
reactor. Design work is under way, and it’s
expected to take up to three years to get
the new solution up and running.”
Sense of belonging
helps students thrive
Ara Institute of Canterbury’s small
class sizes and welcoming, multicultural
community create a sense of belonging
that helps students achieve and thrive.
It’s one of the benefits of Ara’s handson
learning approach, which sees
students learn, collaborate and apply
their skills in small groups and worklike
environments.
The contrast between Ara’s more
intimate way of learning and the big
lecture theatres common at universities
is stark.
Mya Nicol was encouraged to go to
university when she was in her final year
at high school, but after weighing up her
options for tertiary study, she settled on
Ara for the more personalised learning
experience it could offer her.
“I knew it was the perfect fit for me,”
she says. “I liked the smaller learning
environments, the closer relationships
you’re able to have with your tutors and
how you’re not just a number - you’re
able to be you.”
It’s a sentiment repeated often by Ara
students. They love how approachable
their tutors are, and the way they’re
focused on them as individuals.
Vicki Reader graduated from Ara
with a diploma in architecture and
says the small classes were “great”, and
completely different to her previous
university experience.
“[At Ara] I knew everyone, and
we all talked freely in class, which
is uncommon in many tertiary
environments,” she says. “The smaller
classes also meant more tutor time per
person.”
Vicki adds that her tutors were great
ADVERTISEMENT
people who’d happily chat and laugh
with students in the common areas.
“They’ve become friends and industry
contacts”.
Applied science graduate Semaema
Lomani also enjoyed a strong sense of
belonging at Ara and says choosing to
study there was a ‘natural decision’ for
her, in large part due to the exceptional
support provided by Ara’s Cultural
Home, designed specifically to support
Pacific learners.
Gun control advocate taking
his argument to the capital
• By Dylan Smits
FORMER ANTI-terrorist squad
member Tim Ashton is seeking a
commitment from deputy prime
minister Winston Peters to oppose
the reintroduction of military-style
semi-automatic firearms.
They will come
face-to-face in
Wellington on
Monday when
they meet to
discuss concerns
about the Government’s
firearms
law reforms.
Peters is the first
Tim
Ashton
Government minister to respond
to Ashton’s lobbying. He had previously
emailed the Prime Minister
Christopher Luxon’s office
asking for his view on the issue,
but his queries were forwarded to
Associate Justice Minister Nicole
McKee who is leading the push for
firearms reform.
Ashton was part of the
Christchurch anti-terrorist squad
team which engaged David Gray
in a gun battle after his killing
spree in Aramoana on November
13, 1990. Gray was killed after
shooting dead 13 people in the
coastal Otago settlement.
He is strongly opposed to McKee’s
efforts to rewrite the Arms Act
and review the firearms registry.
Whether rules on MSSAs will
change is unclear, as the Arms Act
rewrite has not yet gone through a
public submissions process.
“Politicians should need to stand
up and clearly say whether they
are for or against bringing back
semi-automatics. Don’t just leave
it in the hands of Nicole McKee,”
said Ashton.
Currently MSSAs are only available
to a limited number of licence
holders for pest control and gun
collecting.
“We need to hear from politicians
of all parties a clear yes or
no for these firearms. Even if they
say yes, we know where they stand
moving forward,” Ashton said.
He cites the mosque gunman
who was able to legally acquire
MSSAs. The Labour Government
banned the weapons after the
massacre.
“Those firearms will end up in
the wrong hands and we will have
MISSION: Former anti-terrorist squad member Tim Ashton
is taking his fight against the reintroduction of militarystyle
semi-automatics to deputy Prime Minister Winston
Peters. Ashton will also push for a ban on downloading
instructions to print 3D firearms.
a mass shooting event,” he said.
Peters did not respond to questions
from The Star about NZ
First’s position on reintroducing
MSSAs, with an office spokesperson
saying he would be better
placed to answer after the meeting.
Gun Control New Zealand
co-founder Philippa Yasbek will
be at the meeting with Peters to
express opposition to any form of
reintroduction for MSSAs.
Ashton will also tell Peters about
two reforms to the Arms Act he
does support.
He believes the downloading
of online instructions for how to
make 3D-printed firearms should
be banned.
Police data released under the
Official Information Act shows
seizures of the weapons have
increased in recent years.
There were no seizures recorded
in Canterbury between September
1, 2022 and August 31, 2023 with
a sharp increase to 16 weapons
seized between September 1, 2023
and September 1, 2024.
Ashton also says police should
have the power to seize cars and
driver’s licences when illegal firearms
have been found in a vehicle.
Last month
The Star reported
Ashton’s frustration
at not receiving
a response
from McKee’s
office to an email
he sent opposing
the reintroduction
of MSSAs.
He also had no
Nicole
McKee
response to a second email sent on
October 13.
A spokesperson for McKee’s
office said the inquiry was being
considered and “he can expect a
response in due course”.
McKee from the ACT Party, and
a former gun lobbyist, has been
criticised for loosening regulations
on gun clubs and ranges.
Police Association president
Chris Cahill has also questioned
McKee’s independence from the
gun lobby.
Developers buy land as confidence in
• By Dylan Smits
TWO OF THE city’s largest
property developers are buying
more land to build homes as
market conditions improve and
interest rates decrease.
There have been 3766 new
residential building consents approved
between September 2023
and September 2024, a 6.7 per
cent increase on the 3531 dwellings
consented for the previous
12-month period.
Multi-unit dwellings like
apartments make up about 50 per
cent of the consents, with 2539
approved.
Oakridge Homes has bought
up land in Halswell and Belfast
over the past six months, with
about 100 standalone homes
planned on the newly acquired
sections.
The developer is relatively new
to the market, being founded
in 2021, but it has grown to
become one of the largest offering
house-and-land packages in
Canterbury.
Director James Parker said the
land purchases are about meeting
buyer demand and building the
three-to-four-bedroom family
homes his company specialises in.
“We’re looking to maintain our
position so we need to increase
our land purchases to meet customer
requirements. We’re seeing
a pick up in the number of people
buying and forecasting that there
will be more,” he said.
Oakridge is building about 50
homes in the Milns Green subdivision
near Halswell Domain,
with the exact number dependent
on final plans.
The homes will have an asking
price of $800,000 to $850,000.
About 50 homes are also being
built on land purchased in
the Spring Grove subdivision in
Belfast, with an asking price of
$750,000 to $800,000.
Parker sees lower interest rates
as a key driver for customers’
increased confidence in the housing
market.
“There’s been a lot of negative
press over the past two years,
but now we’ve seen interest rates
lower, inflation lower. There’s a
lot of people who might have said
housing market grows
“We still see central
Christchurch as an undervalued
market and an excellent place for
first-time buyers and investors
because the infrastructure
around the city is amazing,”
said general manager Kathryn
Marshall.
In the central
city, there will be
30 townhouses
available in
Bath St and 24
in Allen St with
a price range
of $373,000 to
In Ferry Rd,
26 townhouses
will be built in the central
city ranging from $391,000 to
$525,000, with four standalone
homes being built further out
on the road in Waltham. These
“We’re seeing a real confidence
developing with lower interest
rates and the coalition Government
saying they will tackle the
cost of living,” said Marshall.
It comes as Williams Corporation
abandoned plans in April to
build 350 dwellings over four years
in Hornby on a $30 million site.
Co-founders Matthew Horncastle
Marshall says the company is
refocusing its building efforts
justified as an attempt to craft
a more relatable brand for
Last-minute reprieve
on cycleway closure
THE CLOSURE of the
Heathcote Express cycleway has
been delayed.
KiwiRail agreed at the last
minute to the city council pausing
the closure of the 1.5km
section between Vaila Pl and
Truscotts Rd. How long the
cycleway will remain open for is
yet to be confirmed.
Gates were due to be locked
from today until significant
upgrades are installed after KiwiRail
told the city council the
Scruttons Rd rail crossing was
unsafe for ongoing use.
However, on Tuesday KiwiRail
said it would seek to
continue discussions with the
city council about the requested
closure date of the cycleway and
move this date to a later, to be
confirmed, date.
A one-sentence email from
KiwiRail was read out to
councillors at the beginning of
a council meeting, The Press
reported.
“As discussed, regarding
the requested date affecting
the cycleway at Scruttons Rd,
KiwiRail would seek to continue
in discussions about this with
Christchurch City Council, and
hence move this date to a later,
to be confirmed, date.”
The closure was discussed at
the adjourned council meeting,
and acting mayor Pauline Cotter
said it was important the city
council and KiwiRail worked
collaboratively together.
“We want to get this right to
make sure everyone is as safe as
possible whether they’re using
the road, a cycleway, footpath or
going over a rail crossing,” she
said.
Said city council transport
planning and delivery manager
Jacob Bradbury: “We will keep
working closely with KiwiRail
on this project and gain clarity
for the community as to how
long the cycleway will remain
open for.”
Hall, and is spread over 11.5ha
near the Southern Alps.
“Gunyah was a bit sad. It
looked like an old folks’ home,”
she told OneRoof.
Luckily, the homestead had
been built by master crafts people
and so its integrity was still
intact.
“The building has not been
mucked around with because it
was in the country, and it was
just somebody’s farmhouse. They
existed, they did the farming,
and that was it. So, in a way it
survived through neglect,” she
said.
“Everything was beautifully
made. If you run your hands on
all the panelling, it’s still absolutely
perfectly flush.”
Ferrari and her family restored
some of the outbuildings into
self-contained cottages, which
they were then able to rent out,
and then tacked the gardens,
something that was well within
Ferrari’s wheelhouse, having
won awards for her landscaping
work.
The earthquakes about 10
years later led to another upgrade,
with the family forced to
strengthen and modernise parts
of the homestead that collapsed.
At the time of the disaster, she
told the New Zealand Herald:
“Our ceiling came down as I was
trying to get out of bed. I can’t
believe we got out. The quake
was something – it was as if the
house had been hit by a train 20
times, jolting back and forth and
there was a bomb underneath. I
have whiplash pain in my neck
and back.”
The family’s post-quake restoration
took a year to complete
but it was worth it, with the
estate growing in popularity
with tourists – both from New
Zealand and overseas.
“I’ll never retire I’ll aways be
doing something. But I have a
few bits of metal in my body now
and the physical aspect of working
in the garden, bending down,
making people’s beds, is getting
a bit tricky.
“I’d love to stay here, but I
don’t see it happening the older
I get. It’s just the classic time in
life when you move on. I’m not a
spring chicken anymore.”
The deadline sale for the 15
bedroom, 12 bathroom, 540sq-m
home closes on December 5.

Golfing with the Stars ‘best ever’
CHART TOPPER: Jordan Luck joined the stars, including
golfing superstar Sir Bob Charles, for the charity fundraiser.
PHOTOS: BRAINTREE
• By Diane Keenan
BRAINTREE’S annual charity
golf tournament broke all
previous records, raising
more than $310,000 for the
Christchurch wellness centre
– the first of its kind for people
living in the community with
neurological conditions.
Tournament organiser
Brendan Prendergast said the
annual BrainTree Brothers
and Sisters Golfing With The
Stars tournament, played at
Clearwater last week, must now
rank as the country’s largest
charity golf event.
“This was without doubt the
best golf event that we have
ever staged. All the 240 people
involved in this event as either
players, stars, volunteers,
sponsors and auction bidders
came out to support BrainTree
and what was achieved in
terms of both the funds raised
and golfing experience is
astonishing,” Prendergast
said.
Funds from the annual
tournament initially went
into building the $8.1 million
BrainTree wellness centre in
Langdons Rd, Papanui, which
opened in July 2022 to support
those living in the community
with multiple sclerosis,
parkinsons, dementia, stroke and
other neurological conditions.
Now money raised is used to
support services. Last week’s
tournament was the fourth, with
funds raised topping last year’s
$200,000, the previous year’s
$120,000 and the inaugural
tournament’s $53,000.
“The event is hugely important
to us given that we do not receive
any central government funding
and instead rely on events such
as our golf tournament to keep
the organisation running. It’s
an amazing result and one that
makes all of the hard work of
the last 12 months worthwhile,”
Prendergast said.
Golfing royalty Sir Bob Charles
and Greg Turner were among
the 34 stars of seven sporting
codes taking part. Others
included first-timer Christian
Cullen, Olympic high jump
gold medallist Hamish Kerr and
basketballer Tom Abercrombie.
Rock star Jordan Luck still had
enough energy after playing
a round of golf to deliver an
impromptu performance of hits,
Victoria and Why Does Love at
the post-match function.
Former All Black and sports
commentator Izzy Dagg and
team Anthony Harper won the
tournament with a net team
score of 49.4. Some went close
to winning the four hole-in-one
prizes – including a $75,000
Mitre 10 home makeover, a
$75,000 Hyundai Sante Fe,
a $100,000 cash prize and a
$100,000 Huntsman boat – but
they remained elusive.
Prendergast said he has been
inundated with people wanting
to play in next year’s event,
which will again be a sell-out
given there was a waiting list of
16 teams wanting to participate
last week.
“It’s going to be difficult for us
to match or better what we raised
this year. But, trust me, we will
give it a crack,” he said.
“I have witnessed the growth of
John Bertrand Collectables
Buying in Christchurch Next Week
Once again, the gold and collectables buyers
from Wellington company John Bertrand
Collectables are visiting Christchurch next week.
Mr Tony Grant from the company says, “If you
are downsizing or wanting to dispose of things
because they no longer serve any purpose to you
or your family bring them in”. “Next week will be
a great opportunity to have any items you want
to sell assessed by our buyers” said Mr Grant.
Particularly wanted are Gold and Silver (in any
of its forms) and Collectables such as Coins,
Banknotes, War Medals,
Old Wind-up Watches and
other interesting Small
Collectables.
“We are keen buyers,
especially of the items in
the list below” said Mr
Grant. “Nothing is too small
for our consideration. We
are just as happy buying 1
item as we are buying 1,000
items” he said. The buyers
will be in Christchurch next
week (see details below).
As Tony Grant points out
“If you are in doubt about
any items you may wish to
sell, bring them along for an
instant appraisal.”
Mr Anthony (Tony)
W. Grant
Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society
of New Zealand Incorporated
Director and Buyer
John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd
Author of the John Bertrand
NZ Coin & Banknote Catalogue
Gold & Silver
At Near Record
Prices
D uring these
uncertain times
we have seen a sharp
increase in the price of
precious metals. The gold price in New
Zealand is at near record levels so gather
up all your unwanted items and take them
along to the buyers. Tony Grant says “We can
buy old gold items in all forms, including
Jewellery (Rings, Chains, Brooches etc),
Coins (Sovereigns and the like), Alluvial
(River Gold), virtually anything, even
Gold Teeth! We also need all Sterling Silver
including Cups, Tea Services, Cutlery and
Old Coins” he said.
Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes
arly New Zealand Banknotes dated
Ebefore 1932 are currently fetching
big money! This is according to Mr Tony
Grant, author of the John Bertrand New
Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue.
Mr Grant is in Christchurch next week
on a buying trip for John Bertrand
(Collectables) Ltd and would be very
keen to see any of these issues. “We will
pay at least $300 for any undamaged
Ten Shilling or One Pound banknote
T
Interesting Small
Collectables Wanted
he buyers from John Bertrand
(Collectables) Ltd, visiting
Christchurch next week, are happy to
look at any interesting items, for example
vintage pocket and wristwatches such
as Rolex, Men’s Omega, Breitling and
gold watches etc. Also wanted, pre 1950’s
picture postcards, Maori and Pacific
artefacts, old fountain pens and other
small antique or historical items.
“If you have something unusual
which you would like to sell, please
bring it into one of our venues, we would
like the chance to at least have a look at it”
said Tony Grant, buyer for the Company.
“We will consider anything which may be
of interest to a collector” he said.
from a New Zealand trading bank dated
1932 or before.
Denominations of five pounds and
higher would be worth from $700. “Any
banknote dated prior to 1900 would be
worth at least $1000” said Mr Grant.
Also purchased are any Reserve Bank
of New Zealand pre-decimal issues,
especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas
banknotes are also wanted, especially
early Pacific Island issues.
Collectors Need War Medals
urrently, throughout NZ and the world there is a big
demand by collectors for war medals. These cover all
wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the
Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later
Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and
Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa
around 1900 and the war medals awarded for this service are
needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early
New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars.
General service medals from both the First and Second
World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined
these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group
of medals has any special award for bravery such as the
Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for
Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can
add great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer
for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have
old medals, some dating back to early Imperial days, that
they are not sure what to do with. These are better off in
the hands of collectors who will look after them. We will be
happy to look at any war medals whatsoever, just bring them
in to venues” he said.
Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity
o you have a bunch of old coins sitting around in your
drawers and cupboards? You just never know what
rarities may be lurking there. The advice from Tony Grant
from John Bertrand (Collectables) Limited is to “bring
them in and let us have a look”. “No need to sort anything
out just bring them in ‘as is’ and please don’t clean them!
We can go through coin accumulations and collections
fairly quickly” he said. The buyers are particularly keen
to buy pre 1946 New Zealand Silver Coins for at least 20
times their face value (more for quantity). “In any event
we will buy All Coins,” said Mr Grant.
THE AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL SHOW
From sheep judging to wood
chopping, fairground rides to
dog trials, the Agricultural and
Pastoral Show is synonymous
with bringing country life to
town. Thanks to it, you might
be familiar with Berkshire pigs,
Omme irrigators and Miss
Wool of Canterbury.
The city’s first A&P Show was
held in a paddock north of Latimer
Square in 1862. It shifted
to Colombo St (now Sydenham
Park) the following year, then
to the Addington showgrounds,
where it continued for another
110 years. Canterbury Agricultural
Park opened at Wigram
in 1997.
For years, show weekend
has marked the start of
summer festivities, combining
Canterbury Anniversary Day
with New Zealand Cup Week.
Students, families, and city and
country folk alike have lined
up to see the livestock judging,
new machinery and sideshow
entertainment.
This year’s show has
introduced drone and
E-bike racing, alongside
more traditional events like
lawnmower racing.
Historic event changes
include rams being led out
of their pens for judging for
the first time in 1933, an
“innovative” decision. Merinos,
however, were not included
“in the new order” in case they
showed an inclination to be
playful. In 1938, farmers were
invited to see how quickly
they could attach and detach
a Farmall mower in what was
termed “a novel competition”.
The show rebranded as the
NZ Agricultural Show in 2018.
It was cancelled due to Covid
in 2020 and 2021 and almost
cancelled this year because of
financial difficulties, until a deal
was struck with event solutions
company Event Hire. Renamed
The Christchurch Show, its days
of operation have shifted to
include Saturday.
Councillors’ last chance to
make housing right for Chch
The city
council is
scheduled
to vote in
December
on housing
intensification
Plan Change 14.
Combined Residents’
Associations
Christchurch
spokesperson Tony
Simons details its
shortcomings
IN JUST THREE weeks our city
council votes on the radical and
controversial Plan Change 14,
scrapping our hard fought for
post-earthquake plan. Council
staff are calling it a paradigm
shift in city planning. It is
unprecedented.
If recommendations from an
Independent Hearings Panel
(IHP) are accepted, the plan will
permit unnecessary multi-storey
commercial and residential densification
all over Christchurch.
A good plan change should
foster inclusive and functional
communities. This one does
not. It has proved to be messy,
confusing and divisive. Even the
planners have struggled with
it, forced to make numerous
requests to the IHP requesting
changes, explanations and clarifications
about what it actually
means.
Proponents believe it will
deliver more affordable housing,
but we all know housing is too
expensive for other reasons, like
land, construction and finance
costs.
The idealogues are clear. Either
you are for housing intensification
or you are against it, but the
case for densification is far more
nuanced than that.
PC14 will not deliver on its
basic affordability promise.
HOUSING: The proposed Plan Change 14 will allow three homes of up to three storeys on
each site across the city, without the need for resource consent. It is in response to national
standards for urban development introduced in 2021.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
Higher density often replaces
good quality older housing stock
with smaller more expensive
apartments and townhouses.
Alternatively, we’ll just get the
slums of the future.
“Crappy apartments are better
than living in a car,” said Housing
Minister Chris Bishop. It’s
hardly a compelling argument
for a city-wide plan change.
The final version of PC14
hasn’t even given us the sunlight
access protection we asked for,
it rejects requiring developers
to plant trees to replace the ones
they rip out, it defines walkable
catchments that are not
walkable, it ignores the call for
increased setbacks along major
roads to make room for future
mass transit, and it rebuffs the
evidence for a protective area
around Riccarton Bush. It
also persists in recommending
three-storey medium density
‘A good plan change
should foster inclusive and
functional communities.
This one does not. It
has proved to be messy,
confusing and divisive.’
– Tony Simons
development all over the city,
a recommendation the council
might (hopefully) decide to overturn
next year.
The more passionate
supporters of PC14 suggest
it could make Christchurch
more like the great cities of
Europe with their characterful
multi-storey precincts. These
are cities born from centuries of
pollution, disease, conflict and
overcrowding. My relatives in
Amsterdam envy us. They live
in a country with 500 people
for every square kilometre of
land. In England the population
density is 300, Denmark 200,
France 120. Aotearoa is just
20, making us one of the least
populated countries on the
planet. We need high-density
suburbs like Saudi Arabia needs
sand.
No one (including our city
council), believes Christchurch
is facing a population explosion
requiring vastly more capacity.
Experts predict moderate
population growth over the
next 30 years, just 1 per cent
year-on-year, and the Greater
Christchurch Spatial Plan and
2021 Housing Capacity Assessment
both indicate the city
already has enough land to meet
that demand. PC14 will rezone
enough land to meet housing
demand for the next 115 years.
It’s crazy stupid.
PC14 will also dilute residential
revitalisation of our city
centre by proposing high-density
“walkable catchments” in our
suburbs, where a walk to the
nearest supermarket and back
might actually take an hour.
We’ll see fewer trees and gardens,
less sunlight, and neighbourhoods
dominated by singles
and couples with no children.
Demand for new stand-alone
family homes in Selwyn and
Waimakariri will sky-rocket.
More green fields will be lost.
Believe it or not, where the
IHP did recommend slightly less
suburban intensification, there
are now last-minute attempts
to turn that around. In my area
(Riccarton) Cr Harrison-Hunt
proposes allowing high-density
development over 10 more blocks
of neighbourhood east of Wainui
St in an apparent trade-off for
his offer to support protection
for Riccarton Bush. This kind of
‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’ is unnecessary
and unhelpful.
How about we simply hold fast
to our vision to intensify and
rejuvenate our city centre first,
focus on providing safe, clean
and efficient transport systems,
and cut back on high-density in
the suburbs until it is needed?
At least that way we encourage
families to stay in our Garden
City instead of having to move to
Lincoln for a lawn for the kids to
play on.
The good news is, our city
councillors do have a last
window of opportunity to make
this plan better when they
meet next month. They can
use evidence already presented
to reject some of the IHP’s
recommendations (or offer
alternatives), then ask Housing
Minister Chris Bishop to support
those changes.
It’s a last chance to make this
plan right for Christchurch.
– Tony Simons is also Riccarton
Bush Kilmarnock Residents’
Association acting chair
Structure of electricity
‘faux-market rotten’
REGARDING THE article ‘Leap
in power prices with more to
come’ (The Star, November 7),
from 2022-02 to 2024-09 my
annual low-user power bill rose
by 63 per cent, or 46.8 per cent
when adjusted for inflation.
I was throughout on the cheapest
retailer and plan
available, and my usage patterns
largely did not change.
I understand the removal of
low-user plans was intended to
provide greater fairness for larger
families with perhaps poorly
insulated homes who were
paying very high winter bills. I
do sympathise with them, but
the resultant increase in my
power bill seems quite excessive,
with more to come.
Some of that increase is gentailers
gaming the spot market
and trying to squeeze out
competitors like Electric Kiwi,
among others.
The structure of the NZ electricity
faux-market has been
rotten since the late-1990s.
Remember Max Bradford’s
promises of cheaper electricity
for all NZers? Instead we have
reportedly some of the highest
prices in the world.
The Way We Were
In January 1953, the ship
Dad’s brother was waiting at
He had a home, and a job at
Aulsebrooks waiting for dad.
Mum and I both started in the
of the female staff and was very
kind and in good control. Whenever
any of the girls were married,
there was always presents.
I was married in 1959, and in
Granity, Buller, and had a daughter
how she found me, but a lovely
baby dress and card arrived from
Miss Stevenson. I was thrilled.
Working at Aulsebrooks seems
to be a family affair, as we know
of a number of families who were
there at different times. My uncle
played in the factory bowls team
Casino marks 30 years of community,
• By Claire Reid
ON NOVEMBER 4, 1994 when
Christchurch Casino opened its
doors, it was New Zealand’s first
fully-licenced casino. Now it’s
celebrating its 30th birthday.
Chief executive Brett
Anderson has been at the helm
for more than half of that time
– 17-and-a-half years – and has
seen plenty of change, as well as
facing huge challenges such as
the 2011 earthquakes and the
Covid-19 pandemic.
“When I took
over there was a
bit of upheaval
at the time and
the employees
joked I would
probably only
be here for three
years and then go
back overseas,”
Anderson said.
“But I consider myself very
Brett
Anderson
fortunate and privileged to have
the role that I do and to see the
casino’s place in the community
in Christchurch itself.
“We’re a highly regulated
industry, but our most important
licence is our social licence.”
Incredibly, eight members
of staff have been there since
the very first day and were
celebrated for their years of
service at a special dinner
POPULAR: Christchurch Casino celebrated its 30th birthday with a special dinner event.
earlier this month.
Christchurch Casino also
donated $3000 on behalf of each
of the eight to local charities of
their choice.
“We wanted to celebrate those
long-standing members of the
team, but we also wanted to
invite their partners because
they will have missed them
during the time they’re with
us. It’s important they’re
acknowledged, too,” Anderson
said.
Across its three decades
of operation, the casino has
Anniversary Weekend Hire Deal
GET 3 DAYS HIRE - ONLY PAY FOR 2!
distributed $5.9 million to
countless charities and local
good causes through its
charitable trust, something
Anderson feels particularly
proud of.
“A large part of it is
that engagement with the
community, which is interesting,
challenging and eye-opening
and at the same time, really
satisfying.
“We’re not restrictive with the
use of the funds. Some trusts
say money can’t be used to pay
wages or for certain other things,
but we take the view that if it’s
benefiting the wider community,
then that’s a good enough reason
to help.”
Looking forward, Anderson
is hopeful about the future and
remains committed to keeping
hold of the casino’s social licence
and maintaining its reputation
within the community.
“That’s really important to me.
It’s not just about what people
do in the casino, it’s what they’re
saying around the watercooler
on Monday when they’re talking
about their experience.”
From player to podcaster, move
into media pays off for Marshall
• By Kees Chalmers
FOUR YEARS ago, James
Marshall was at the Hurricanes
undergoing hip surgery, an
operation that brought his rugby
playing career to an end.
The inevitable transition to
post-footy life had dawned and he
was unsure of where to go next.
“It was always spoken about, but
I found it really hard to plan for,”
Marshall said.
“Even right up until the moment
it happened, I still had real
anxiety around what it was going
to look like for me.”
The current Crusaders backs
coach taught at Nelson College
before landing on podcasting in
tandem with coaching.
Aptly named ‘What a Lad’ the
podcast sees Marshall use his footy
connections to interview former
and current players about their
careers and lives outside sport.
He has recorded episodes with
many Crusaders including Will
Jordan, Sevu Reece and Codie
Taylor.
From a makeshift set up in a
spare room at Rugby Park, Marshall’s
podcast has now turned
into a highly-produced internet
show out of Red Nine Studios
in the city centre, listened to by
more than 10,000 people across all
platforms every week.
“I get recognised more for the
podcast than ever in my playing
days, which is pretty cool.”
The idea was sparked while
playing in Japan. During training,
Marshall would chuck his headphones
on and listen to podcasts.
“Ardie (Savea) was doing one at
the time and I was really enjoying
that because it was with a lot of
the guys I played with, but I was
learning stuff I never knew.
“It just wasn’t regular enough.
I was like, ‘far out, someone else
needs to do something there’ and
I thought why not me?”
When Covid-19 hit and forced
everyone indoors, it provided
Marshall with the opportunity to
give it a crack.
“I gave myself the goal of doing
seven episodes. I had heard that
80 per cent of podcasts didn’t get
past that mark, so that was my
first goal. I enjoyed it and have just
kept going since.”
Podcasting has been one of the
fastest growing media genres over
for his podcasting success than his rugby career.
ANDREW AUIMATAGI will
return to the Linwood Keas in the
head coach role next season – six
years after stepping aside.
Auimatagi, who is a life
member at Linwood and serves
as president, will take the reigns
from Damian Horgan who will
stay involved with the club in a
player mentoring role.
Auimatagi said he was pleased
to be back in charge of the club’s
premier side.
“I’m pretty keen to get back into
it. We’ve got a really awesome
crew of staff here and an exciting
young group of players potentially
coming through,” he said.
“Linwood’s always been where
my heart’s at. I’ve been part of
the club for nearly 32 years, so
it’s played an important part in
my journey and I’ve got some
strong relationships with people
there.”
The Keas fell short of the
Pat Smith Trophy final this
season – the first year since 2015
they failed to make the decider
and only the second season in
MEDIA MOVE: James Marshall turned to podcasting after injuries ended his rugby career. On
his What A Lad podcast, Marshall interviews current and former players, like former All Black
and Crusaders midfielder Aaron Mauger, left, about their careers and life outside sport.
the past decade, reaching 546.7
million listeners in 2024.
The medium has spread to the
sporting world, with current and
former athletes opting to make
their own shows rather than presenting
on mainstream channels.
Marshall believes this is
indicative of a changing media
landscape.
“I think media is slowly going
there and there’s so much space,
especially in the rugby game,
for players to jump on if they
wanted to.”
The longer and less-structured
format allows the traditionally
stoic rugby players to show who
they are off the field.
“It gives you a better access to
the player and an idea of what
they’re really like.
“People are afraid to be themselves,
which is a shame. I think
the more guys can be themselves,
the better the game is, the more
entertaining it is, the more engaged
everyone is,” said Marshall.
The new age of social media is
providing current players with the
ability to expand their brand and
make the post-sport transition less
daunting.
“I think rugby has come a long
that time they hadn’t won the
competiton.
In his first stint as Keas coach,
the club won the grand final
every year from 2016 to 2019.
He said the foundations were
there to get the Keas back on top.
“We won the minor premiership
this season, but just fell
short in those last two games
(semi-final and preliminary
final).
“The foundations of this year
are there for us to go a bit further
next year. We’re just going to get
everyone on the same page and
“People are afraid to be
themselves, which is a
shame. I think the more
guys can be themselves,
the better the game is, the
more entertaining it is, the
more engaged everyone is.”
– James Marshall
way and it’s continually growing
in that space.”
Marshall said he loved learning
the stories on his podcast.
“Just getting to hear the journey
that guys go through, the highs
and lows of a career in sport, and
the beauty of hosting it is, I get
to ask the questions I’ve always
wanted to know.”
A real “pinch me” moment for
Marshall was getting to chat with
childhood hero and All Blacks
legend Christian Cullen.
“That was pretty awesome. He’s
someone who I never thought
I’d be able to sit down and have
a conversation with, but with the
podcast I got to do that.
“As someone who basically
remembers all his games, it was
cool to hear how he was going
into those games and what he was
thinking and feeling at the time.”
work hard in preseason.”
Auimatagi has also coached
the Canterbury Bulls, currently
coaches St Thomas of Canterbury
College’s national championship
winning first XIII, and has just
finished up an assistant coaching
role with the Kiwi Ferns in the
Pacific Championships.
“It’s been awesome,” he said.
“They’re a great team of ladies.
I’ve learnt a lot about that next
level, the NRLW. The level of
the game has gone up and you
can see that in the quality of test
footy.”
A favourite episode was hard to
pick as the podcast contrasts between
the hilarity of Charlie Gubb
and the impact of former teammate
Michael Fatialofa’s story.
“He became paraplegic from
the neck down from just a normal
tackle. It was pretty powerful to
hear what he had to go through
and how he’s pulled his way back
to being able to walk again and get
into some sort of normal life.”
The former Hurricane cited
episodes with Dane Coles and
Beauden Barrett as watersheds for
What a Lad, taking him to new
heights in terms of numbers.
The most viewed episode is
with ex-Blues player Kane Barrett,
amassing more than 35,000 views
on YouTube alone.
Marshall has big plans to
expand the brand beyond the podcast,
but the obstacle is time.
“Obviously, it’s hard with my
coaching role growing as well. I’m
not sure how it’s going to look in
the next three to four years, but I
just want to keep chipping away.”
If coaching did end, the podcast
is in a position where Marshall
could make it a full-time gig.
“I’d look to try and take the
podcasting to a new level.”
Auimatagi returns with plan to get Keas back on top
COMEBACK: Andrew
Auimatagi will return to the
Linwood Keas head coach
role next season – six years
after stepping aside.

COASTAL SPIRIT and
Canterbury United Pride’s hopes
of making the final of the men’s
and women’s National Leagues
respectively are hanging by a
thread after identical 3-1 losses at
the weekend.
Pride went down to Eastern
Suburbs at English Park on
Saturday, before Coastal lost by
the same margin to Napier City
Rovers on Sunday.
It means if they have any hope
of finishing in the top-two of their
respective competitions, they
must win this weekend. Pride
take on Central Football on Saturday
and Coastal visit Birkenhead
United on Sunday.
Pride are fifth in the women’s
competition, five points off
the top-two while in the men’s
Cashmere Technical’s 4-3 loss to
Western Springs saw them slip to
now mathematically out of the
running for the final.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Coastal Spirit captain Joe
Hoole said the team would fight
until the end.
“Although we lost, we’ve still
got a lot of belief within the
group that we can still go and
achieve something a little bit
more this season, so very much
looking forward to it (the Birkenhead
match).”
Pride head coach Shane
Verma said he wasn’t losing
hope.
“You got to always be
optimistic, right? We’ve got
to do our end of the business
and perform well in the next
two games, but we also need a
little bit of luck to go our way to
make the top-two.”
Pride last won the women’s
Lofty goals for Riccarton
after first outright victory
• By Sam Coughlan
RICCARTON coach Darren
Entwhistle believes their first
outright victory since returning to
the Metro premiership could pave
the way for a successful season.
Entwistle’s side left it late to beat
Heathcote by 84 runs, taking the
final wicket in the last few overs of
the day, and he said the win was
testament to how hard his players
had worked.
“We were over the moon. It was
quite stressful at the end because it
was down to three overs to go, and
I didn’t want it to be one of those
games where you have them nine
down at the end, so to get that last
wicket was very pleasing.”
English import Ross Whitfield,
who has played under-19s for his
country, stood out, scoring 70 off
just 56 balls in Riccarton’s second
innings, while leg-spinner Ethan
O’Donoghue took six wickets in
the fourth innings.
goals. One is to win a form of
competition, whether it be T20,
one-day or two-day, we’re aiming
to win one format,” he said.
“And we want to finish minimum
mid-table in every competition.
So very high goals, but
you’ve got to, otherwise you can
become complacent and we don’t
want to do that.”
On Friday, in day one of their
two-day clash, they face Lancaster
Park – who themselves had an
outright win, beating St Albans
by 92 runs – Sydenham lost
outright to Burnside, and they
Friday.
Old Boys hung on for a draw
against East Shirley – who at the
close of play on Saturday were
Countryman bigger and better than ever
FUN, FUNKY, fashionable, and
now feisty with an upgraded
engine, the newest generation
Mini Countryman redefines how
good a small wagon can be, with a
bit of Mini magic.
The latest generation model
builds on the Countryman’s legacy
within the brand’s product line-up.
Dating back to the 1960s, the
“Countryman” name has been
associated with the classic Mini
as an estate car equipped with
features necessary for enjoyment
and convenience. This revered
model has established itself
as the adventurer within the
Mini family and continues to
maintain its popularity. With
a sporty silhouette and sleek
modern exterior design, the new
Countryman appeals to both town
and country folk.
The sustainability aspect
takes centre stage in the new
Countryman. It is now 100 per
cent leather and chrome-free,
offering a new assortment of
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
sustainable options for interior
trims and exterior highlights.
The light alloy wheels are
manufactured using up to 70
per cent recycled aluminium.
In combination with renewable
electricity, this process reduces
CO2 emissions by up to 80 per
cent compared with conventional
vehicle production methods.
The recycling theme continues
through the interior with the
surfaces, vehicle floor and floor
mats all made from at least 90 per
cent recycled polyester.
This latest Countryman stands
out from the automotive crowd
with its short overhangs and
equally truncated bonnet paired
with a contrasting long wheelbase.
A delicately curved roof neatly
leads into the newly designed
C-pillar used to differentiate
between various models.
Dialling back to essential
features enhances the vehicle’s
clean, uncluttered lines. As an
alternative to chrome, Piano
Black accents for the Classic trim
in the model we tested provide a
premium finish.
There’s a new octagonal front
grille housing an integrated sensor
suite to support the increased
functionality of the vehicle’s driver
assistance systems.
For a small wagon, although
not so small in its latest guise,
there is a large 12 model line-up
starting at $54,990 for the Core
and meandering up to the heady
heights of $86,990 for the iconic
John Cooper Works. Selected
for this road test is the relatively
affordable Classic that enjoys a few
more of the niceties of motoring
life than the price leading Core.
The all-new Countryman C
offers an appealing entry point
to the range with a 1.5-litre
in-line three-cylinder 125kW
turbocharged engine and a
280Nm fistful of torque for strong
in-gear acceleration and low speed
pulling power. An on-board 48V
mild hybrid system also gives
things a decent nudge. This helps
propel the vehicle through the
0-100km/h sprint in 8.3 seconds.
What you get is a lively and
engaging driving experience,
something that has become a
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 8; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Value for money: 7; Styling 8; Safety – Five star
ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
given from Mini these days. The
Countryman simply takes it one
sizeable step further.
Smoothness and refinement
characterise a powertrain that’s
perfect for taming our challenging
terrain, roads and weather,
although the test vehicle did suffer
some turbo lag from standing
and rolling starts. It wasn’t that
frequent, but still an unwanted
niggle.
Overall, the motor is hard
to fault, consistently providing
plenty of punch when and where
you need it. This is ideal over
demanding undulating roads,
that syphon the energy and
vitality out of engines that aren’t
as robust or as assertive as this
one. The six-speed automatic is
an accomplished gear changer,
and mostly on-point with its ratio
selections and moves confidently
and fluently through these.
A much larger interior adds
welcome light and airy ambience
to the cabin. Under the dashboard
is a redesigned toggle bar which
provides easy access to important
driving functions such as parking
brake, gear selector, start/stop key,
and volume control. This efficient
arrangement unlocks space in the
centre console area for storage.
The rear row of seats offers
exceptional passenger comfort
with forward and backward
adjustments of up to 13cm. It
earns its stripes as a bona-fide load
hauler, offering up to 505-litres
of cargo area. With the rear seats
folded, bulky items can be easily
transported in the vast 1530-litre
compartment. The good news
keeps coming with a colourful
240mm centre console screen.
This high-resolution circular
display is a nod to past Minis
in a future-focused wagon with
the latest technology including
wireless compatibility with both
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety is well-covered with
radar-based driver assistance
systems.
Fitted with the new Mini
Operating System 9, the
interaction unit can be operated
via touch or voice command with
the user interface reminiscent of
an everyday smartphone.
Despite shouldering the burden
of being the biggest Mini ever,
the Countryman still retains
the agile and almost perfectly
balanced handling, thanks to the
suspension’s tenacious grip. The
steering is a sharp and responsive
with plenty of road feel, and points
the car quickly and accurately to
where you want it on the road.
Cleverly blending the best ride
and handling attributes of its
capable predecessor, the handling
lifts this highly practical yet funfilled
wagon to a whole new level.
This is a remarkable achievement
given the model it replaced was
a leading light in the compact
wagon class, but is outshone by
this new model.
