Trailblazing athlete
leaves Olympic legacy
MARISE Chamberlain, the only
New Zealand woman to have won an
Olympic track medal, has died aged
88.
Chamberlain claimed bronze in the
800m at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics
and set a world record in the 440
yards. She also won silver in the 880
yards at the Commonwealth Games
in Perth in 1962.
All up she had 17 national titles.
Born and raised in South New
Brighton in 1935 as the second eldest
of four children, Chamberlain showed
her potential from a young age.
A primary school sprint champion,
she secured her first Canterbury title
over 220 yards aged 15.
She also competed for a year at the
Crichton Cobbers club but then quit
athletics at 16.
Thursday November 14 2024 3
Time to celebrate for young graduates
CHILDREN from schools across
Canterbury will be graduating
from ‘university’ over the next two
weeks as part of a global education
initiative to promote further
education.
Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi – Children’s
University (TMMCU) is a
programme delivered through a
partnership between Canterbury
and Lincoln universities, which
aims to support young learners’
future aspirations to tertiary education
and inspire them to reach
their full potential. Four schools
from the southern suburbs took
part this year.
Children sign up through their
participating schools and are given
a ‘Passport to Learning’, which
they fill out with extra-curricular
learning activities and experiences.
Once they have completed 30
hours in their passport, children
are then invited
to celebrate their
achievement with
family by attending
a special
graduation ceremony
– similar
to a university
graduation – at
the town hall.
“Children’s
University is child-led, which
Jack
Swannell
means they get to decide their
learning journey,” said programme
manager Jack Swannell.
“The programme empowers
tamariki (children) aged seven
to 14 to engage in a range of
BIG DAY: Ōpāwa School pupils celebrated completing the Children’s University programme
with a graduation ceremony at the town hall.
exciting and innovative learning
experiences that take place outside
of the classroom.”
Caroline Gray is a teacher at
Ngutuawa School in Woolston
and said the school’s first year
participating in the programme
has been a positive experience
for pupils who feel a sense of
accomplishment as they add to
their Passport to Learning.
“The need we’re seeing (among
students) is connection, so not
feeling as if they’re in isolation and
knowing there are other learners
the same age, with the same
questions, who are excited by the
same things,” Gray said.
Isolation can be a challenge
in schools, she added, but at
TMMCU students can see a wider
learning community which they
can participate in if they choose a
tertiary studies pathway.
“It’s all about equity and making
sure students see themselves and
others who are like them, in this
institution,” Gray said.
TMMCU offers a range of
opportunities, including access
to 122 learning destinations
(community organisations that
provide learning experiences
for pupils during holidays and
weekends), 500-plus online
portal activities, in-school
experiences, and even a campus
experience day held at UC or
Lincoln, where children get
to experience the university
environment first-hand.
The success of the programme
is evident in its growth. In 2019,
192 students from seven schools
and one rūnanga participated.
GRADUATION DAY
57 pupils from four schools
in the city’s south will
graduate from Children’s
University this year. The
participating schools are:
• Addington Te Kura
Taumatua
• Ōpāwa School
• Spreydon School
• Ngutuawa School
In 2024, this has grown to more
than 1400 students involved
from 48 schools and two
rūnanga, with 45 schools on the
waiting list to join.
The Children’s University
works with diverse groups,
including low socio-economic
communities, schools with high
Māori and Pacific populations,
and those under-represented
in the university environment.
Staff engage with schools to
understand the challenges faced
by children and families which
prevent participation in extracurricular
activities.
TMMCU is supported by the
Rātā Foundation which helps
the programme engage with
priority schools, reduce barriers
such as transport costs, and
deliver the campus experience
day.
“At Rātā, we aim to support
learning opportunities that
help people reach their full
potential,” said foundation chief
executive Leighton Evans.
Rising star heading to Phoenix academy
• By Sam Coughlan
TALENTED midfielder Amber
De Wit is primed to take her first
step towards professional football
after featuring at the FIFA U17
World Cup.
St Andrew’s College year 12
student De Wit, 16, will join the
Wellington Phoenix Football
Academy in January – a feeder to
New Zealand’s only female professional
club.
The move comes after she
performed well at the World Cup
in the Dominican Republic last
month, starting against the hosts
(a 1-1 draw) and Nigeria (a 4-1
loss) before a torn quadricep ruled
her out of the final match against
Ecuador (a 4-0 loss).
De Wit said she really wanted
the Wellington move.
“Six or seven girls in the 17s
New Zealand team that are my
teammates are there. I’ve talked to
them about the facilities and the
trainings. I really wanted it.”
“I really do want to take football
and see where it lands me, so I
think the Phoenix was a hard
move, but I think it’s the right
step.”
She will be boarding at the New
Zealand Campus of Innovation
and Sport and attending Queen
Margaret College for her final year
of high school – cutting short her
time at St Andrew’s.
While she didn’t score at the
World Cup, De Wit was happy
with her performances and said
she loved every minute.
“It’s such an honour to be starting
for your country, singing the
national anthem,” she said.
“I thought I played alright. I just
tried as hard as I could and I don’t
regret anything.”
Her favourite parts of the
tournament were the connections
made with other teams – swapping
shirts with her Nigerian and
Dominican opponents.
“We were staying at the hotel
with the Nigerian team, and
we luckily got to meet them
afterwards.
“We had this whole trading
thing where we’d trade shirts
and clothes, and we had this little
dance party,” she said.
“They didn’t really speak much
English, but we just danced and
“I got to trade shirts with one of
the Dominican girls as well. Just
listening to their stories and how
much of an impact this world cup
has made for their country was so
cool. Baseball is their main sport
De Wit is still injured but hopes
‘I wanted so much
to be able to
stand on that dais’
•From page 1
Three weeks before Chamberlain’s 18th
birthday, a work colleague started training
at Technical Athletic Club.
“I thought: ‘Well, if she is going to run,
then I am too’,” Chamberlain told Steve
Landells from Athletics New Zealand.
On her first day of training at the track
on Ensors Rd, she met Latvian-born Valdy
Briedis, her coach and mentor.
Briedis told the New Zealand Olympic
Committee “at a time when athletes were
expected to pay their way everywhere,
Chamberlain went to a masseur three
times a week and paid for that, which took
a big chunk out of her typist’s pay.”
Chamberlain said she was incredibly
nervous during the Tokyo games.
“Once the heats began I felt a bit
better. I finished second, just behind the
Frenchwoman, Dupureur, and we qualified
easily.
“In the semi-final, I ran very well. Dr
Grigor, our team doctor, let me ring Valdy
back in Christchurch each night as a
reward for running so well.
“Talking to Valdy was reassuring. But
even so, I had a terrible night before the
final. I must have run that race 20 times in
my head. I wouldn’t be surprised if I never
had a moment of sleep all night.
“I felt really bad in the warm-up before
the final. I’d never felt so weak. The more
people said ‘good luck’ the weaker I felt.
“On the starting line I was in lane seven
between the two Brits, Ann Packer and
Anne Smith. All their supporters were just
across the track cheering for them. It was
very intimidating,” she said.
“When the race began I found myself
near the back and then the German,
Antje Gleichfeld, elbowed me really hard.
I almost fell off the track and would have
but for a pair of hands behind me catching
me and pushing me back.
YEAR 8 pupils from Te Waka Unua
School took part in the Puharakekenui
Styx Freshwater Improvement Fund
Project to better understand the outdoors,
biodiversity and the environment.
Forty-eight pupils, teachers and parents,
and two members of Ferrymead Rotary
enjoyed the day’s activities at the Styx,
with transport funded by Ferrymead
Rotary.
Styx Living Laboratory Trust education
programme manager Courtney Reid
organised the day’s activities.
The pupils were divided into four groups
to view and participate in different activities,
under the guidance of Māori elders.
It included viewing and calculating the
water quality of the Styx River catchment,
observing medicinal native plants, learning
about predator control, and Māori arts
and crafts.
The favourite activity was flax weaving,
and all went home with a putiputi, a flower
woven from flax.
“I think it was Ann Packer. I didn’t know
Gleichfeld was known for those sorts of
tactics. I’d never been in that sort of race
before.
“I could never describe how happy I felt
afterwards. I wanted so much to be able to
stand on that dais at an Olympics.
“When I stepped up, I thought about all
those years of sweat and grime and dirt,
the terrible conditions, my parents holding
meals for me for all those years, all the help
I’d got from so many people . . . I burst
into tears and cried and cried.”
Chamberlain’s 800m national record on
a grass track in 1962 stood for 34 years.
She was inducted into the New Zealand
Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and was made
Merit eight years later.
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
Thursday November 14 2024
Add some spice to your life, then chill out
Fiery meatballs and a
cooling salad for can
add some fun flavour
to sunnier days, writes
Nigel Slater
Pork and chorizo cakes
with tomato sauce
Tiny, spicy cakes, hot from
the oven, with a simple tomato
sauce. You can play with the
spice level to suit your taste
by using different flavoured
sausages.
To skin the sausages, slit the
skin down the length of the
sausage with a sharp knife, then
peel it back, pulling the meat
away.
Ingredients
Makes 20 cakes. Serves 4.
Ready in 1 hour
For the tomato sauce:
2, medium-sized onions
2tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic
2tsp tomato purée
500g tomatoes
250ml water
For the cakes:
3 spring onions
2tbsp olive oil
250g spicy sausages, such as
chorizo
500g minced pork
1-2tsp chilli paste
10g parsley, chopped
60g breadcrumbs, white and
fresh
Method
• Peel and roughly chop
the onions. Warm the oil in
a medium-sized, deep-sided
saucepan, then stir in the onions
and leave them to cook over a
moderate heat for about 15-20
minutes. Stir them every now
and again, until they have
coloured a little and are starting
to soften.
• Peel and finely slice the
garlic, then stir into the onions.
Continue cooking, then
introduce the tomato purée, stir
well and leave for 5 minutes, then
roughly chop the tomatoes and
add to the onions.
• Pour in the water, then season
generously with salt and black
pepper, partially cover with a
lid and leave to simmer for 15
minutes or so.
• Make the pork cakes: finely
slice the spring onions into tiny
rounds, discarding the roots and
the darkest tips of the leaves.
Warm the oil in a shallow pan,
then add the onions and cook for
a few minutes until soft, stirring
regularly.
• Add the sausage meat to the
minced pork to the bowl, the
chilli paste, chopped parsley and
breadcrumbs, season, stir in the
softened spring onions, then mix
thoroughly. This is done most
easily with your hands.
• Break off lumps of the
mixture, about 45-50g in weight,
and shape them into rough balls
and set them aside on a tray. You
should have about 20.
• Preheat the oven to 200C.
• Warm a little more oil in
the pan, then add some of the
meatballs, letting them fry until
golden on the underside before
turning them over.
• Transfer the tomato sauce to
a baking dish. Let the other side
of the meatballs colour to a nice
golden brown, then place them
in the sauce, and continue with
the remaining cakes.
• Bake for about 20 minutes
until the cakes are cooked
through.
Chilled spicy cucumber
and tomato salad
Refreshing, spicy, salty and
crisp, this is one of those salads
for a laid-back lunch on a
scorching afternoon.
Ingredients
Serves 3-4. Ready in 30 minutes
1 red chilli, medium-hot
1 large pepper, red or orange
half a large cucumber
100g mangetout or sweet peas
200g cherry tomatoes
coriander, a small bunch
6 sprigs mint
70g cashews, salted and roasted
For the dressing:
3tbsp lime juice
3tbsp fish sauce
1tsp caster sugar
2tsp chilli sauce
Method
• Slice the chilli in half
lengthways, remove the seeds,
then cut into very fine shreds
and put into a mixing bowl.
• Halve the pepper, pull out the
core and seeds, then shred into
long, fine strips. Add this to the
chillies, then peel the cucumber,
cut in half lengthways and
remove the core with a teaspoon.
Cut into thin slices and mix with
the pepper and chilli.
• Cut the mangetout into
thin shreds, halve the cherry
tomatoes and add both to the
peppers.
• Remove the coriander and
mint leaves from their stems,
then tear or roughly chop and
scatter in the salad.
• Make the dressing: put the
lime juice, fish sauce and sugar
in a small bowl or jam jar and
stir or shake until the sugar has
dissolved. Stir in the chilli sauce.
• In a dry, shallow pan, toast
the cashews, just enough to
warm them. Dress the salad with
the lime and fish sauce tossing
gently to coat, then transfer to a
large serving plate.
• Scatter the toasted nuts over
the salad and serve.
