Thursday November 14 2024 3 Time to celebrate for young graduates CHILDREN from schools across Canterbury will be graduating from ‘university’ over the next two weeks as part of a global education initiative to promote further education. Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi – Children’s University (TMMCU) is a programme delivered through a partnership between Canterbury and Lincoln universities, which aims to support young learners’ future aspirations to tertiary education and inspire them to reach their full potential. Four schools from the southern suburbs took part this year. Children sign up through their participating schools and are given a ‘Passport to Learning’, which they fill out with extra-curricular learning activities and experiences. Once they have completed 30 hours in their passport, children are then invited to celebrate their achievement with family by attending a special graduation ceremony – similar to a university graduation – at the town hall. “Children’s University is child-led, which Jack Swannell means they get to decide their learning journey,” said programme manager Jack Swannell. “The programme empowers tamariki (children) aged seven to 14 to engage in a range of BIG DAY: Ōpāwa School pupils celebrated completing the Children’s University programme with a graduation ceremony at the town hall. exciting and innovative learning experiences that take place outside of the classroom.” Caroline Gray is a teacher at Ngutuawa School in Woolston and said the school’s first year participating in the programme has been a positive experience for pupils who feel a sense of accomplishment as they add to their Passport to Learning. “The need we’re seeing (among students) is connection, so not feeling as if they’re in isolation and knowing there are other learners the same age, with the same questions, who are excited by the same things,” Gray said. Isolation can be a challenge in schools, she added, but at TMMCU students can see a wider learning community which they can participate in if they choose a tertiary studies pathway. “It’s all about equity and making sure students see themselves and others who are like them, in this institution,” Gray said. TMMCU offers a range of opportunities, including access to 122 learning destinations (community organisations that provide learning experiences for pupils during holidays and weekends), 500-plus online portal activities, in-school experiences, and even a campus experience day held at UC or Lincoln, where children get to experience the university environment first-hand. The success of the programme is evident in its growth. In 2019, 192 students from seven schools and one rūnanga participated. GRADUATION DAY 57 pupils from four schools in the city’s south will graduate from Children’s University this year. The participating schools are: • Addington Te Kura Taumatua • Ōpāwa School • Spreydon School • Ngutuawa School In 2024, this has grown to more than 1400 students involved from 48 schools and two rūnanga, with 45 schools on the waiting list to join. The Children’s University works with diverse groups, including low socio-economic communities, schools with high Māori and Pacific populations, and those under-represented in the university environment. Staff engage with schools to understand the challenges faced by children and families which prevent participation in extracurricular activities. TMMCU is supported by the Rātā Foundation which helps the programme engage with priority schools, reduce barriers such as transport costs, and deliver the campus experience day. “At Rātā, we aim to support learning opportunities that help people reach their full potential,” said foundation chief executive Leighton Evans.
