Trailblazing athlete 

leaves Olympic legacy 

MARISE Chamberlain, the only 

New Zealand woman to have won an 

Olympic track medal, has died aged 

88. 

Chamberlain claimed bronze in the 

800m at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics 

and set a world record in the 440 

yards. She also won silver in the 880 

yards at the Commonwealth Games 

in Perth in 1962. 

All up she had 17 national titles. 

Born and raised in South New 

Brighton in 1935 as the second eldest 

of four children, Chamberlain showed 

her potential from a young age. 

A primary school sprint champion, 

she secured her first Canterbury title 

over 220 yards aged 15. 

She also competed for a year at the 

Crichton Cobbers club but then quit 

athletics at 16.

Time to celebrate for young graduates 

CHILDREN from schools across 

Canterbury will be graduating 

from ‘university’ over the next 

two weeks as part of a global 

education initiative to promote 

further education. 

Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi – Children’s 

University (TMMCU) is a 

programme delivered through a 

partnership between Canterbury 

and Lincoln universities, which 

aims to support young learners’ 

future aspirations to tertiary education 

and inspire them to reach 

their full potential. Eight schools 

from the western suburbs took 

part this year. 

Children sign up through their 

participating schools and are 

given a ‘Passport to Learning’, 

which they fill out with extracurricular 

learning activities and 

experiences. 

Once they have completed 30 

hours in their passport, children 

are then invited to celebrate their 

achievement with family by 

attending a special graduation 

ceremony – similar to a university 

graduation – at the town hall. 

“Children’s University is childled, 

which means they get to 

decide their learning journey,” 

said programme manager Jack 

Swannell. 

“The programme empowers 

tamariki (children) aged seven 

to 14 to engage in a range of 

exciting and innovative learning 

experiences that take place 

outside of the classroom.”

children get to experience the 

university environment firsthand. 

The success of the programme 

is evident in its growth. In 2019, 

192 students from seven schools 

and one rūnanga participated. 

In 2024, this has grown to more 

than 1400 students involved from

The Children’s University works 

with diverse groups, including 

low socio-economic communities, 

schools with high Māori and 

Pacific populations, and those 

under-represented in the university 

environment. Staff engage 

with schools to understand the 

challenges faced by children and 

families which prevent participation 

in extra-curricular activities. 

TMMCU is supported by the 

Rātā Foundation which helps the 

programme engage with priority 

schools, reduce barriers such as 

transport costs, and deliver the 

campus experience day.

2024 Top Achievers 

Dux Recipient Celine Pang 

The Peter Bryant Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the Dux of the 

school. 

This is an annual award established by the Board of Trustees to 

acknowledge the outstanding contribution to Burnside High School of the 

late Dr Peter Bryant, in his role as the chairperson of the Board. 

In her junior years at Burnside High School, Celine made an immediate 

impression on her teachers with words like conscientious, motivated, 

mature and a pleasure to teach being frequently used to describe her 

approach to learning. She puts her success down to not just making 

the most of her natural ability, but working really hard and enjoying her 

successes. She is competitive, but a real team player. 

Her quote to get her through the tough hours of study is “Just do it”, 

and that is what she has done this year, consistently achieving all internal 

credits at Excellence Level, and no fewer than 240 Excellence credits 

across her entire NCEA portfolio. 

At Burnside High School, Celine has maintained high levels of involvement 

in extracurricular activities, especially in Volleyball, where she has 

represented the school throughout her time with us. This year she was 

awarded the Gary Fuller Cup for most worthy player. To relax, she enjoys 

other recreational sports and, while not studying music currently, still 

dabbles with this as she is a Grade 8 pianist. 

Celine will test herself with 

Scholarship exams in all five of 

her subjects later in the year 

alongside her Level 3 entries 

of Calculus, Statistics, Physics, 

Chemistry and Accounting. 

At Graduation Celine collected 

awards including First Place in 

Statistics, First Place in Calculus, 

First place in Accounting and 

Second Place in both Physics and 

Chemistry. With that outstanding 

record, she can confidently look 

ahead to successful studies at 

University of Canterbury in the 

field of Engineering in 2024 and 

whatever career path she might 

choose to follow after that. 

Proxime Accessit Lucy Uren 

Our Proxime Accessit for 2024 is an exceptionally self-motivated student 

who is passionate about her learning and the environment. 

Beginning at Burnside High School in 2020, Lucy did not disappoint in the 

slightest and it was evident during Year 9 and 10 that she was a force to 

be reckoned with and in her very own unassuming manner, she went about 

accumulating one of the finest academic records we have seen. 

Throughout her schooling, Lucy has had involvement in a massive range 

of competitions and extra-curricular activities including Volleyball, Tennis, 

Library Duty, Athletics, World Scholars Cup, Cantamath, ICAS - the list 

goes on! What is more impressive, is that she has diligently stuck with 

groups and interests and developed into a fine school leader with a place 

this year on the Executive Council, Head of Staff Support and as Library 

Leader. 

Her academic prowess currently lies in the Sciences and this has made 

a major contribution to her NCEA record where she has accumulated an 

eye-watering 216 credits at Excellence level, Excellence Endorsements at 

both Levels 1 and 2 with all credits this year exclusively in the Excellence 

zone. 

In 2025, her plans are to go on to 

either the University of Canterbury 

or Otago where she has been 

offered numerous scholarships to 

help her along the way. 

In her end of year exams, Lucy will 

tackle all five of her subjects at 

Scholarship level. 

Throughout her time at Burnside 

High School, Lucy has won 

numerous awards including 

General Excellence for West 

Division in 2023. At Graduation 

she collected First in Biology, First 

in Chemistry, First in Physics and 

Excellence Awards in Calculus and 

Statistics, and has won the Hugh 

McDougal Rankin prize for Science. 

The Peter Rowe Cup for 

Musicianship – Will Luhrs 

Will is an outstanding musician who has 

been a member of the Specialist Music 

Programme, and has contributed at the 

highest level, for five years. 

Will has demonstrated perfectly what 

is achievable when individual talent is 

supported by a great 

work ethic, an insatiable appetite for 

self-improvement and new opportunities, 

great teaching, a selfless 

attitude, listening to and acting upon 

advice, and outstanding inter-personal 

skills and stage presence. 

His natural leadership qualities have 

played a role in mentoring younger 

students, providing an impressive 

amount of service to the department along the way. From the humblest 

of musical beginnings, in five years this student has risen to a level 

where their potential has been recognised by one of the world’s top 

music colleges in the form of a huge undergraduate scholarship; we will 

undoubtedly be hearing lots more about Wills successes in the future. 

Sports Champions 

THOMAS VESTY 

Thomas has represented Burnside High this year in Beach Volleyball, 

Cricket and Volleyball. 

In Beach Volleyball, Thomas and his partner, Ryan Huang (Y12), placed 3rd 

in the Senior Boys division of the NZ Secondary Schools’ Championships 

at Mt Maunganui in early February. Thomas was Captain of the Boys 

Senior A Volleyball team, who placed 1st in Division 2 at the NZ Secondary 

Schools Championships in Palmerston North in March this year, after their 

team placed 2nd at the Mainland Championships (SISS) in February and 

3rd at the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Championships early March. 

Thomas also plays Cricket for Burnside High in the Gillette Cup series, and 

also the Northwest Club 1 st XI. 

Thomas has represented New Zealand in both Beach Volleyball and 

Volleyball this year, in the U19 age group. He made the NZ Mens U19 Beach 

Volleyball team, who after qualifying for the World Championships at the 

Asian Championships in Thailand last term 

with his partner, Thomas was again selected 

to travel to China in July, to play in the World 

U19 Championships with a different partner. 

Thomas is also a member of the NZ Mens 

U19 Volleyball (indoor) team, who lost 

to Australia 1-2 in the Oceania Play-Off 

in Canberra - for a place at the Asian 

Championships in July. 

In August, Thomas was named in the Senior 

Mens’ Volley Blacks Squad. 

STACEY MORGAN 

Stacey represented Burnside High this year in Swimming, Water Polo Girls 

Senior A team, Football Girls 1 st XI and the BHS Road Race team. At the 

BHS Athletics Sports, Stacey was 1st in the Over 16 Girls Track. At the BHS 

Swimming Sports, Stacey was 1st in the Year 13 Girls, and at the school 

Cross Country, Stacey was 1st in the Year 12 and 13 Girls. 

However it has been with her Swimming that Stacey has excelled this year, 

getting back into it after a year or so off. Earlier this year at the Canterbury 

Secondary Schools’ Swimming Championships, Stacey broke a Canterbury 

50m Freestyle record, set in 2013, for 17 year old Girls. 

Her greatest accomplismentsd achieved this year were at the NZ Short 

Course Swimming Championships in 

Auckland, in August, where she placed: 

1 st – 50m Freestyle Women 17-18 yrs 

2nd - 100m Freestyle Women 17-18 yrs 

3rd - 50m Butterfly Women 17-18 yrs 

After this event, Stacey was selected in the 

Tri-Series Squad, which saw two NZ teams 

of young NZ pathway swimmers, compete 

against two Australian teams, in Hamilton, 

in the October holidays.

Flag footballers book 

ticket to world champs

THE ST ANDREW’S College 

under-12 flag football team will be 

heading to Orland, Florida next 

year after winning the national 

championship. 

The win means the team will 

represent New Zealand at the U12 

NFL Flag World Championships 

from January 28 to February 6. 

Similar to rippa rugby, flag 

football is a version of American 

football where players are ‘tackled’ 

if a tag is ripped off a belt they are 

wearing. 

St Andrew’s was one of 10 teams 

competing in Upper Hutt at the 

weekend and booked their tickets 

to Orlando by winning every 

match – including a 30-8 win over 

Auckland’s Bader Intermediate 

School in the final. 

Coach Mason Shaw said it was a 

really special achievement. 

“The kids put in a lot of hard 

work over their lunchtimes and 

really dug deep into the fundamentals 

of football. They learnt a lot 

from it,” he said. 

Shaw said he would ensure the 

team soaked up the occasion. 

“We want to make sure that it’s 

an enjoyable thing. It’s not all about 

going over there and just winning. 

“Winning’s always the icing 

on the cake, but for them it’s that 

experience and realising they’ve 

had success this year, and hopefully 

they can have something to 

continue with as they move on 

with their sporting careers.”

Three weeks before 

Chamberlain’s 18th birthday, a 

work colleague started training at 

Technical Athletic Club. 

“I thought: ‘Well, if she is 

going to run, then I am too’,” 

Chamberlain told Steve Landells 

from Athletics New Zealand. 

On her first day of training at 

the track on Ensors Rd, she met 

Latvian-born Valdy Briedis, her 

coach and mentor. 

Briedis told the New Zealand 

Olympic Committee “at a time 

when athletes were expected 

to pay their way everywhere, 

Chamberlain went to a masseur 

three times a week and paid for 

that, which took a big chunk out 

of her typist’s pay.” 

Chamberlain said she was 

incredibly nervous during the 

Tokyo games. 

“Once the heats began I felt 

a bit better. I finished second, 

just behind the Frenchwoman, 

Dupureur, and we qualified 

easily. 

“In the semi-final, I ran 

very well. Dr Grigor, our team 

doctor, let me ring Valdy back 

in Christchurch each night as a 

reward for running so well. 

“Talking to Valdy was 

reassuring. But even so, I had a 

terrible night before the final.

times in my head. I wouldn’t 

be surprised if I never had a 

moment of sleep all night. 

“I felt really bad in the warmup 

before the final. I’d never felt 

so weak. The more people said 

‘good luck’ the weaker I felt. 

“On the starting line I was in 

lane seven between the two Brits, 

Ann Packer and Anne Smith. All 

their supporters were just across 

the track cheering for them. It 

was very intimidating,” she said. 

“When the race began I found 

myself near the back and then 

the German, Antje Gleichfeld, 

elbowed me really hard. I almost 

fell off the track and would have 

but for a pair of hands behind 

me catching me and pushing me 

back. 

“I think it was Ann Packer. 

I didn’t know Gleichfeld was 

known for those sorts of tactics. 

I’d never been in that sort of race 

before. 

“I could never describe how 

happy I felt afterwards. I wanted 

so much to be able to stand on 

that dais at an Olympics. 

“When I stepped up, I thought 

about all those years of sweat 

and grime and dirt, the terrible 

conditions, my parents holding 

meals for me for all those years, 

all the help I’d got from so many 

people . . . I burst into tears and 

cried and cried.” 

Chamberlain’s 800m national

stood for 34 years. She was 

inducted into the New Zealand 

Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and 

was made a Member of the New 

Zealand Order of Merit eight 

years later.

Teacher among country’s 

most inspirational

A BRAND-NEW set of sports equipment 

is expected to arrive at Kirkwood Intermediate 

School off the back of teacher Marty 

Burke. 

Earlier in the year, Westpac and iSport 

Foundation NZ asked for nominations 

of teachers who have made a difference 

in their pupils’ physical education. Forty 

have been selected nationwide. 

While Burke has been given the accolade, 

he said he can’t take all the credit and 

he has a great crew alongside him. 

“I know there are many teachers in 

our schools, provinces and country that 

promote PE, health, sport and community 

events, it’s the way most of us are wired. 

I have several teachers in my school you 

could have said similar things about.”

Vicky Rowe, but was kept in the dark until

Burke said the new sports balls will 

encourage the kids to be active during 

break-time, something the school prides

“I think they (pupils) will be proper

Burke’s motivation stems from the kids 

– he’s inspired by their zest for life and 

positive energy. 

“The challenges you will face throughout 

life can often be simulated on the sports 

field or court. Helping students to note 

how they acted or felt in different scenarios 

in PE can make them reflect on life in 

the past or future, and it’s just bucket loads 

of fun,” he said. 

Shirley Primary’s Stuart Thomas and 

Whitau School’s Hannah Thomas were 

also among those teachers selected.

Rising star heading to Phoenix academy

TALENTED midfielder Amber 

De Wit is primed to take her first 

step towards professional football 

after featuring at the FIFA U17 

World Cup. 

St Andrew’s College year 12 

student De Wit, 16, will join the 

Wellington Phoenix Football 

Academy in January – a feeder to 

New Zealand’s only female professional 

club. 

The move comes after she 

performed well at the World Cup 

in the Dominican Republic last 

month, starting against the hosts 

(a 1-1 draw) and Nigeria (a 4-1 

loss) before a torn quadricep ruled 

her out of the final match against 

Ecuador (a 4-0 loss). 

De Wit said she really wanted 

the Wellington move. 

“Six or seven girls in the 17s 

New Zealand team that are my 

teammates are there. I’ve talked to 

them about the facilities and the 

trainings. I really wanted it.” 

“I really do want to take football 

and see where it lands me, so I 

think the Phoenix was a hard 

move, but I think it’s the right 

step.” 

She will be boarding at the New 

Zealand Campus of Innovation 

and Sport and attending Queen 

Margaret College for her final year 

of high school – cutting short her 

time at St Andrew’s. 

While she didn’t score at the 

World Cup, De Wit was happy 

with her performances and said 

she loved every minute. 

“It’s such an honour to be starting 

for your country, singing the 

national anthem,” she said. 

“I thought I played alright. I just 

tried as hard as I could and I don’t 

regret anything.” 

Her favourite parts of the 

tournament were the connections 

made with other teams – swapping 

shirts with her Nigerian and 

Dominican opponents. 

“We were staying at the hotel 

with the Nigerian team, and 

we luckily got to meet them 

afterwards. 

“We had this whole trading 

thing where we’d trade shirts 

and clothes, and we had this little 

dance party,” she said. 

“They didn’t really speak much 

English, but we just danced and
