Glacier Express 

Discover Switzerland on the spectacular Glacier Express, 

the slowest express train in the world. 

A timeless fairytale 

journey 

“It may sound surprising that an express 

train takes 8 hours to cover 290 kilometres, 

but that is exactly what makes travelling 

on the Glacier Express on this legendary 

route such a special adventure. 

The diversity of the route is impressive: 

snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, 

flowering meadows, forests and rushing 

streams. Enormous differences in altitude 

are overcome on a journey through 91 

tunnels and over 291 bridges to finally 

reach the Oberalp Pass at 2,046 metres 

above sea level. Time becomes irrelevant, 

as you enjoy local Swiss delicacies served 

directly to your seat accompanied by 

breathtaking views through the large 

panoramic windows. 

One of my personal highlights is the 

journey through the Rhine Gorge, which is 

up to 400 metres deep and where flowing 

water and bizarre rock formations create 

a stunning natural spectacle. The Rhine 

Gorge is not called the “Swiss Grand 

Canyon” for nothing!”

Bernina Express 

Travel in spectacular fashion from Switzerland across the 

border to Italy on the highest railway in the Alps. 

One of the most 

spectacular railway 

journeys 

“Switzerland is known for its many 

panoramic trains and unique railway lines 

but one experience in particular stands 

out for me: the Bernina Express. From 

Chur to Tirano, the red panoramic train 

winds its way over numerous viaducts – 

including the world-famous Landwasser 

Viaduct – along the Albula line up to St. 

Moritz. It continues on the Bernina line, 

past the horseshoe bend Montebello Curve 

and the Lago Bianco Reservoir down into 

Poschiavo. The Albula/Bernina railway 

line has been designated a UNESCO World 

Heritage Site since 2008 and is still the 

only railway line in Switzerland to have 

received this accolade. 

The biggest highlight for me is the short 

stop at Alp Grüm Station. This small 

village, at an altitude of 2,091 metres, 

can only be reached by train and offers 

breathtaking views of Val Poschiavo and 

the Palü Glacier.”

LUGANO – ZERMATT (CA. 215 KM) 

Leaving Lugano for Zermatt. On 

your way lies Ascona. Continue your 

journey and arrive in the region of 

Valais. Here lies the Aletsch Glacier. 

Continue moving on to Täsch which 

is your last stop by car before you 

continue by train on to Zermatt.

ZERMATT – MONTREUX

A morning trip up the exhilarating 

open-air Gornergrat railway is not to 

be missed. Back in Täsch your route 

begins with a stunning drive up 

through the Valais, heading through 

Sierre, Sion, Martigny and Aigle. 

Continue along the shores of 

Lake Geneva to Montreux. Overnight 

in Montreux. 

DAY 7 

MONTREUX – GSTAAD (CA. 330 KM) 

Drive through the orchards and 

terraced vineyards of the Lavaux to 

Lausanne and from there continue 

your drive to Freiburg. Further on

ROOM CHECK-IN & CHECK-OUT 

Check-in times are usually between 2pm 

and 3pm whilst check-out can be from 

11am to 12pm on the day of departure. 

If you have a later flight the hotel will in 

most cases agree to hold your luggage 

for a few hours after check-out. A later 

check-out or use of a day room (at 

additional charge) may also be an option 

and can be arranged locally. 

DRIVING IN SWITZERLAND 

The roads in Switzerland are well 

developed and easily accessible. A 

motorway vignette is required when driving 

your own car in Switzerland. An E-Vignette 

can be purchased in advance on the 

website of the Federal Office for Customs 

and Border Security (FOCBS). Car Rental 

companies based in Switzerland include 

vignettes in their rental prices. If you are 

taking a rental car into Switzerland from 

France, Germany, Italy or Austria you will 

have to buy a vignette at the border. Expect 

queues in high season.

now show “from” prices in our brochure,

“from” price is available for a specific travel 

period mentioned clearly in the grey box 

“Inclusions”. Please note that our pricing 

excludes flights which can be added by our 

flight experts to your package. All prices 

are subject to exchange rate fluctuations 

and can change without prior notice. 

FLIGHTS 

We offer flights from all major airports in 

the UK to Switzerland with a wide range 

of airlines. Prices for air travel fluctuate 

depending on airline, availability and 

departure airport. Our in-house flight 

experts will be happy to offer advice and 

to book the most convenient flight for 

your trip. Your flights will be protected 

under our ATOL licence. We will charge £ 35 

per person for this flight booking service. 

Please note that flights, once booked and 

confirmed, cannot be refunded. 

ACCOMMODATION 

Accommodation in all hotels, whatever 

the rating, is usually in a standard twinbedded 

room, unless otherwise stated. 

Please take note that most hotel rooms 

in Switzerland are equipped with a ‘Swiss 

twin’ (one frame/single mattresses/ two 

duvet covers). Also, many double / twin 

rooms only take a maximum of one extra 

bed for children. 

SINGLE ROOM 

Although supplements are payable for 

single accommodation, it should be noted 

that the standard size and location of 

single rooms are not always as good as a 

twin/double room (even if the twin/double 

room is booked for single occupancy). 

GUEST CARDS 

Some cities and towns in Switzerland 

provide guest cards for local transport and 

other discounts to guests staying overnight 

at a hotel. This can be a very convenient 

and cost-effective way of exploring a local 

area on public transport. Guest Cards are 

always issued by the hotel. 

INTERNATIONAL RAIL 

All our packages can also be combined 

with train travel by Eurostar from the UK 

via Paris or Brussels to Switzerland and 

from neighbouring countries Germany, 

France, Italy and Austria into Switzerland. 

We offer Interrail and Eurail tickets as well 

as point-to-point tickets on DB, Trenitalia, 

TGV Lyria services, SNCF, Italo / NTV and 

many more.
