SAINT BARTH HAS ALWAYS ADAPTED WELL TO THE VARIOUS 

CLIMATIC, economic and social constraints with which it has been faced 

over time. Island inhabitants have learned to live harmoniously with nature, 

their only true richness. Balance is achieved with simple, charming traditional 

architecture, allowing for a perfect integration into the site. 

With the arrival of the first visitors to the island, and thus the first exterior 

influence, the traditional Saint Barth case naturally evolved, primarily by 

multiplying structures and linking them, or not, according to need. This 

architectural evolution has been continually tailored to the specific 

environments of each part of the island, preserving trees and rocks to conserve 

the landscape. 

ENVIRONMENT 

Depuis toujours, Saint Barth a su s’adapter aux contraintes climatiques, 

économiques et sociales qui l’ont affectée. Les habitants ont dû apprendre à 

vivre harmonieusement avec la nature, leur seule vraie richesse. Fruit de leur

Avec l’arrivée des premiers visiteurs, et donc d’une première influence

SEVERAL INDIVIDUAL MEASURES FOR DURABLE DEVELOPMENT, 

some recent, others in application for some time, contribute today to the 

preservation of our limited environment: collection and storage of rainwater, 

generation of hot water via solar energy and electricity by photovoltaic 

solar panels, recycling waste water for watering vegetation, heat recovery 

for heating pools, recycling neutral materials crushed for fill, optimizing natural 

wind sources and thermal isolation, etc. 

With regard to Town Planning, the Collectivity’s political position was 

developed with the same environmental conservation concerns in mind. 

The Code is used to regulate pressures exercised on St Barth’s landscapes 

and a zoning map, currently awaiting finalization, defines both urban and 

natural zones. Concerning architectural norms, they are equally regulated by 

the Town Planning Commission. 

Island authorities intend, over the course of the next few years, to proceed 

with the complete interment of all network cables, protecting them from 

climatic aggression and reducing their unfavorable visual impact. The 

Natural Reserve oversees the development and protection of a durable 

marine environment. There are currently other environmental conservation 

projects being considered, including the creation of a botanical conservatory 

and the restoration of Saline’s salt beds. The environment on the island of 

St Barth is irrefutably managed as a valuable heritage. 

De nombreuses mesures individuelles en matière de développement durable, 

certaines récentes, d’autres en application de longue date, contribuent 

aujourd’hui à préserver notre environnement si limité : recueil et stockage des 

eaux de pluie, production d’eau chaude par énergie solaire et d’électricité 

par panneaux photovoltaïques, récupération et traitement des eaux usées pour 

l’arrosage, récupération de chaleur pour le chauffage d’eau de piscine, 

recyclage de matériaux neutres concassés pour remblai, optimisation de 

la ventilation naturelle et de l’isolation thermique, etc. 

La politique de la Collectivité en matière d’urbanisme a aussi été développée 

avec les mêmes préoccupations visant à la préservation de notre environnement. 

Le Code s’efforce de réguler la pression foncière exercée sur les paysages 

de St Barth et la carte en projet en définit les zones d’urbanisation et les zones 

naturelles. Quant aux normes architecturales, elles sont contrôlées par la 

Commission de l’Urbanisme. 

L’île a l’objectif de procéder à l’enfouissement de 100% du réseau de câbles 

dans les prochaines années, les protégeant des agressions climatiques et 

réduisant leur impact visuel. La réserve naturelle veille à la protection et au 

développement durable du milieu marin. Il existe des projets à l’étude comme 

la création d’un conservatoire botanique et la remise en état de salines. 

L’environnement de l’île de St Barth est incontestablement géré comme un 

patrimoine de valeur.
