9 MUST-TRY MEALS
{ By Emily Peter-Corey | Photos by Jacob Cantu @voyage_creative }
Folsom is chock-full
of delicious dishes
from locally owned
establishments. From
casual to fancy and
American to Thai,
there’s something to
satisfy everyone. Here
are some must-try meals
to sink your teeth into.
Put on your Sunday best and
visit Sutter Street Steakhouse
for some seriously sizzling
steaks. They feature USDA
prime cuts of beef, and we’re
partial to Nick’s Grill: a petite
filet served with a stone
ground mustard sauce and
topped with crumbled blue
cheese, accompanied by garlic
mashed potatoes and spinach.
604 Sutter Street, 916-351-9100,
sutterstreetsteakhouse.com
Mylapore
Although it’s not tricky to
find a vegetarian option on
almost any menu, Mylapore
is strictly vegetarian and has
plenty of vegan options, too.
Try their Onion Tomato Chilli
Uttappam, which is essentially
a thick, savory pancake made
with dosa batter and loaded
with juicy onions, tangy
tomatoes, and spices aplenty.
Paired with a mango lassi
(yogurt-based drink blended
with mangoes, cardamom, and
a little sweetener), meatless
meals may become your new
go-to. 1760 Prarie City Road,
For those seeking a sweet treat, a visit to
Snooks Candies and Chocolate Factory is a
must. Perhaps one of the most iconic names in
Folsom, they’ve been around since 1963 and
are still family-owned and operated. You can’t
go wrong with any of the shop’s handmade
candies, but their famous brittles—from
peanut to macadamia—can’t be beat. All nuts
are cooked into the brittle, creating a deep,
sweet, salty, crunchy (insert all the adjectives!)
dessert you’re sure to love. 731 Sutter Street,
916-985-0620, snookscandies.com
The first Dos Coyotes opened in Davis in 1991
and has since become a staple throughout
the Greater Sacramento area. Their menu is
always fresh, fun, and locally sourced, with
ample items for all, including California Fish
Tacos. Made with mahi mahi (our personal
favorite!) that’s marinated and charbroiled
then packed into two warm tortillas, each taco
is then topped with Chef Mark’s “dawg sauce,”
mango salsa, agave-lime slaw, cilantro, onions,
and—because California is in the name—fresh
avocado, of course! You can also look forward
to a side of rice, black beans, and the eatery’s
complimentary chips and salsa bar. 13385
Mikuni
When anyone in the area says “sushi,” the answer is always:
Mikuni! The famed Japanese restaurant serves up fresh and
tasty sushi in modern, fun environs. You’ll enjoy perusing their
menu for creatively named offerings, like the Marilyn Monroll,
which has scallops, avocado, crab mix, panko shrimp, masago,
and green onions. Pair it with a specialty cocktail or sake, and
we guarantee you’ll be a returning customer. 185 Placerville,
CHEERS TO
BEERS!
Although Folsom is loaded
with tons of good food,
don’t forget to stop by our
only craft brewery in town,
Red Bus Brewing. They
serve a constantly rotating
selection of sours, lagers,
ales, and IPAs (the Jetronic
Haze IPA is hop-tastic!),
and even offer cider and
wines for those less partial
to brews. They’ve often got
live music, trivia, and food
trucks, too. 802 Reading
Street, Suite A, 916-467-
Hop Sing Palace
Gold Miner Café
Everything at Gold Miner
Café is homemade: from soups
and gravies to pancakes and
cinnamon rolls. Speaking of the
latter, we suggest ordering the
Cesar’s: a giant cinnamon roll
filled with raisins and walnuts
then generously topped with
frosting and butter. To balance
the sweetness, try Tami’s Omelet:
avocado, bacon, tomatoes, sprouts,
and cream cheese, served with
your choice of sides—may we
suggest the home-fried potatoes
with onions and a homemade
biscuit? 426 East Bidwell
Street, Folsom. 916-984-4181,
goldminercafe.net
Many locals have fond memories
of Hop Sing Palace, especially
considering that it’s Folsom’s
oldest restaurant, having opened
in 1957. Their menu is extensive,
and even includes a few American
dishes for particularly picky
eaters. Since we think you should
always eat family style at a
Chinese restaurant, start with pot
stickers, then go for Hop Sing Beef
(marinated in their house specialty
sauce), vegetable chow mein, and
kung pao shrimp (yes, it’s spicy).
Pizza comes in all shapes
and sizes here on the
West Coast, but if you’re
looking for authentic
Chicago-style pizza,
head to Chicago Fire.
Make sure you put your
deep-dish pizza order
in quick, as it’s full of
sauce, cheese, and
toppings, and takes some
time to cook. We love
the Combo: sausage,
pepperoni, bell peppers,
onions, and mushrooms
with hand-crushed
plum tomato sauce and
Wisconsin mozzarella,
all surrounded by a rich,
flaky crust. To finish, you
must order the Deep-
Dish Delight off their
dessert menu: a warm
chocolate chip cookie (or
double fudge brownie)
topped with vanilla ice
cream, whipped cream,
and a cherry. 310 Palladio
Parkway, Folsom. 916-
Scott’s Seafood
Roundhouse recently
celebrated their 25th
anniversary, which is no
surprise since the Folsom
staple is always buzzing
with happy customers.
Try their namesake,
the Scott’s Cioppino:
clams, mussels, prawns,
fresh fish, and habanero
SEMICONDUCTORS ARE
SERIOUS BUSINESS
Photo ©3dartists - stock.
adobe.com
{ By Julie Ryan }
The semiconductor industry is alive and thriving—especially locally. With more
companies choosing the Folsom area as home, the economy is flourishing.
Once upon a time, Folsom was known primarily for Folsom Prison and its rich Gold
Rush history. It’s now known for its crucial role in the advancement of technology.
Qualcomm, Samsung Semiconductor, Intel Corporation, and Micron Technology
are driving this local economic growth with their semiconductor research and
2024-2025 // CHOOSEFOLSOM.COM 15

development and providing jobs in
the process. Without semiconductors,
modern electronics and digital
technology would be non-existent.
Semiconductors, also known as
microchips, aren’t limited to just
computers. They’re an essential part
of cell phones, vehicles, household
appliances, and health care equipment.
Providing for so many devices means
the industry is in high demand—not
only for the semiconductors, but also
specialists and technicians who develop
this technology.
The industry is key in designing
and manufacturing these electronic
components used in so many devices.
Recent chip shortages, globally, have
shown how important the industry is from
electronics to cars. The demand is only
increasing as more technology develops.
Intel has made many contributions
to Folsom’s economic growth since
the early 1980s. They’re one of the
largest private employers in the
area, providing jobs in engineering,
research, and manufacturing. They’ve
also contributed to local tax revenues,
invested in education by partnering
with local schools to support STEM
education programs, added to the
growth in the housing market, and
helped make Folsom more attractive to
other tech companies and startups.
Qualcomm, which is headquartered in
San Diego, opened a Folsom office in April
2024. The company released a statement
prior to the launch saying, “Qualcomm’s
new office opening highlights the growth
trajectory of its compute business and
According to Greater Sacramento
Economic Council, the area has
26 times more concentrated
semiconductor growth capital
than the U.S. average. Why?
* There’s already a heavy tech
presence drawing others to the
area. Since there are several
established tech giants that
likely means there are more
experienced tech workers to
select from.
* Folsom has good schools, many
recreational options and is
known for its high quality of life.
* Its proximity to the Sierra
Nevada mountains, ocean and
the State Capitol draws many to
the area.
* Compared to other tech cities,
like Silicon Valley, Folsom offers
a lower cost of living.
underscores Qualcomm’s investment in
Folsom’s flourishing tech ecosystem.” As
with Intel, Qualcomm brought new job
opportunities to Folsom and has potential
for more growth to further assist the local
economy.
Samsung Semiconductor is another
major player in the industry, and
another one calling Folsom home. The
San Jose-based company opened their
Folsom Research and Development
office in late 2023 with 50 employees.
They have plans to continue adding to
their team as they create technology
for automotive chips, mobile phones,
data centers, and AI.
One of the larger tech companies
in the area, Micron Technology,
has had a significant presence in
Folsom for many years. They’ve also
contributed to Folsom’s economy
through employment, providing jobs
for engineers and other professionals,
and tax revenue. As with other tech
companies, Micron participates
in community outreach and STEM
education projects.
These tech companies, and others like
them, have an important collaborative
relationship with Choose Folsom
and the city. Together, they work to
customize a vision for each business
while at the same time promote
the city as a desirable location for
both businesses and residents. This
collaboration is beneficial to all parties
involved, as the city provides market
insights, networking opportunities,
support, and economic development
resources for the companies.
The impact of the semiconductor
industry in Folsom has been positive—
helping to bring success economically,
increase job opportunities, and improve
infrastructure. Thousands of jobs have
been filled through the tech companies
and through supporting businesses,
including startups. The population has
grown, putting a demand on housing.
STEM education in schools is getting more
attention, building futures for the next
generation in the semiconductor industry.
Local tax revenues have increased, and a
strong tech scene may be helpful during
economic downturns making Folsom
more resilient than other areas.
Looking ahead, the semiconductor
industry’s role in Folsom is likely to
remain important and meaningful.
The demand for semiconductors will
continue to grow globally, because
of advancements in AI and 5G
technologies. Folsom is in a prime
position to benefit from future
developments and progress. Even still,
the semiconductor industry’s success
can happen in cycles, depending
on global market positions. That
means Folsom’s ability to address any
challenges will be essential. Innovation,
gaining new talent, and keeping the
talent already in place, as well as
maintaining superior quality of life for
its residents, are key components to
continued success.
7 HISTORIC BUSINESSES
Folsom has grown
by leaps and bounds
since gold miners
arrived with their
picks and pans in
1849 hoping to strike
it rich. And although
the city doesn’t
have any businesses
dating back quite
that far, some are
so synonymous
with Folsom it feels
like they’ve always
been here. Read
on to learn more
about these Folsom
mainstays.
1. Dorothea’s: A Wonderland of Gifts
801 Sutter Street, 916-985-2714,
dorotheas.com
It’s Christmas all year round at
Dorothea’s Shoppe on Sutter Street.
Founded in 1965, Dorothea’s is a
family-owned and operated specialty
gift shop located in the heart of
the Historic District. While other
businesses have come and gone
over the years, Dorothea’s has been
operating from the same location on
Sutter Street for nearly 60 years! In
addition to a mind-blowing selection
of Christmas ornaments, the store also
sells housewares, elegant seasonal
décor, and fun gifts.
Jim and Sherri Metzker purchased
the shop from the original owners in
2014, and say they love the Folsom
community. “We have so many loyal
customers and meet a lot of new
people every year,” Jim says. “We love
how the city embraces us and our store.
They are truly the reason we have been
able to survive for 59 years.”
2. Handley’s: A Staple of Local Culture
Dorothea’s Shoppe
Handley’s Work & Western Wear
Hop Sing Palace
Founded by Chet and Donella
Handley in 1961, and now run by their
grandchildren, Handley’s Work &
Western Wear has been outfitting local
cowpokes—and others—with stylish,
durable duds for over 60 years. The
family-owned store sells “working wear
for the new frontier,” including hats,
boots, jeans, belts, and everything
Carhartt. A longtime sponsor of the
Folsom Pro Rodeo, Handley’s hosts an
annual party to thank rodeo volunteers.
And if you’ve ever wondered where to
find a belt buckle the size of a dinner
plate, this is your place.
Zittel Farms
Folsom—and the oldest restaurant
in town—Hop Sing Palace has been
serving up savory Chinese and
American cuisine since 1957. Owners
Bill and Lana Lam purchased the
restaurant from the original owner in
1986 and have been running it ever
since. Named after the beloved Chinese
cook in the western TV series Bonanza,
the establishment is popular for both
casual dining and special occasions.
With its welcoming atmosphere and
tufted booths, the ambiance is as cozy
as your grandma’s living room, but with
more fortune cookies.
4. Zittel Farms: Agricultural Heritage
6781 Oak Avenue, 916-989-2633,
zittelfarms.com
From pumpkins to Christmas trees,
hayrides to a petting zoo, Zittel
Farms has been a Folsom favorite
since 1976. As the last working farm
in town, Zittel Farms is a popular
destination for families and school
groups alike. The farm’s dedication
to creating memorable experiences
has solidified its place in the Folsom
community. Plus, where else in town
Rainbow Bridge Jewelers
can make your way through a corn
maze and then reward yourself with
fresh apple cider? Founders Roger and
Gail Zittel are active members of the
Folsom community; in 2021, the city
dedicated the outdoor amphitheater
in historic Folsom as the Zittel Family
Amphitheater.
5. Rainbow Bridge Jewelers:
Crafting Memories
721 Sutter Street, 916-985-7618,
rainbowbridgejewelers.com
You can’t stroll down Sutter Street
without noticing the colorful entrance
to Rainbow Bridge Jewelers. But it’s
the bold, whimsical jewelry and quality
craftmanship that has made the store
a local favorite since 1978. Owned by
the husband-and-wife team of Jim
Kelly and Dorothy Cormack—both
artists themselves—Rainbow Bridge
distinguishes itself by “carefully
curating the pieces...with an eye on fine
design,” the business explains. Rainbow
Bridge’s offerings include locally made
pieces alongside items from designers
around the world.
a popular bar and live music venue,
attracting locals and tourists alike. Sure,
the menu and clientele have changed over
the years, but with vintage photographs
spots to take kiddos, from toddlers to teens.
Folsom is home to tons of parks, but one of our favorites is
Folsom Kids Play Park, aka Castle Park. The playground is
spacious and features fortress-like wooden structures, hence its
nickname, plus swings, giant tires, rope ladders, and a wiggling
rubber bridge (if you’re brave enough to cross it!). In addition to
the play structure, Castle Park also has barbecues, a pavilion, and
Since 1982, Leatherby’s has been serving the
Greater Sacramento area and just recently set
up shop in Folsom. They offer an extensive ice
cream menu and even have food options, so you
can savor a well-rounded meal before dessert. If
you’re looking for a quick treat, stop by the ice
cream counter and order a simple single scoop
or go all out with a sundae creation. 2455 Iron
Point Road, 916-510-2373, leatherbys.net
For kids ages one through 10, BusyKids Play
Town & Coffee Shop is an ideal spot for
imaginative play. They offer a hands-on, indoor
playground—reminiscent of a miniature town—
allowing for imaginative play year-round. They
also offer a co-working space, yoga, story times,
field trips, an art lab, and more special events
and classes. Plus, and perhaps most importantly,
they have a full-service espresso bar and mini
café for parents to grab some caffeine and take
a load off. 1014 Riley Street, Suite 7, 916-608-
Coffee Culture
{ By Caroline Kings | Photos by Jacob Cantu @voyage_creative }
Big Wave Coffeehouse
Folsom has its very own “coffee snobs,” according to one barista I spoke with.
“They really like their coffee, and they know what they like.” If this is you, step
out of your “coff-ort zone,” and head to one of these cool cafés.
Big Wave Coffeehouse (bigwavecoffeehouse.com) brings the aloha spirit
to Folsom with its Hawaiian theme and tropical flavors, while its coffee is
“grounded” in Washington state’s passion for a cup of Joe. A few years back,
the business was bought by husband and wife, Cherokee (HI) and Mindy (WA)
Valeria who were customers of the previous coffee shop and didn’t want to see
it go. “We just love coffee and like most Washingtonians, it was a dream to own a
coffee shop.”
WHAT TO ORDER: White mochas and honeycomb lattes are popular as is their cold
brew, which is sold in growlers. Supporting local, The Momma Bear Bakery provides
coffee accompaniments with gluten-free options coming from The Caring Kitchen.
The blueberry scone and snickerdoodle cookie (GF) are highly recommended.
Overseas influence continues at
Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters
(chocolatefishcoffee.com) but this time
it’s from New Zealand. Their logo is a
fern, images of the Antipodean islands
adorn the walls and, did you know,
chocolate fish are a typical sweet
treat in NZ, usually presented for a
job done well? Their aim is to make
coffee accessible to all—they roast their
own beans—and they also welcome
a diverse community, offering Halal
options.
WHAT TO ORDER: You can, of course,
purchase chocolate fish in their coffee
shops, although the Folsom baristas
tell me that their lemon Danish and
lemon and blueberry muffins are also
very popular. Their honeycomb lattes
“fly off the shelves” and mochas are a
favorite as well.
Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters
A community favorite, the large patio at
Coffee Republic (coffeerepublicfolsom.
com) made me feel as though I was on
a Mediterranean vacation—mosaicpatterned
tables with umbrellas,
Moorish arches, and birds chirruping—
pure bliss! Ken and his wife Renee
changed their retirement plan, buying
Coffee Republic, which they now run
with their daughter, Madison. They
exude warmth and love meeting people
and connecting, which is evident while
I’m there; Madison gave me such a
warm greeting and they knew many
customers by name.
WHAT TO ORDER: Lattes and mochas are
their coffee best sellers, but they also
have an extensive food menu. “The
pesto turkey melt is the most popular
by far” Madison tells me.
On my tour of Folsom, I go from
a republic to a kingdom. Tucked
away on Iron Point Road you’ll
find Kingdom Coffee Roasters
(kingdomcoffeeroasters.com)
where, yes, coffee beans are king. A
destination for coffee lovers, thanks
to their rich roasts, they make their
own syrups and are creative with the
seasonal menus.
WHAT TO ORDER: Barista Chuy says
cappuccinos are the most popular
coffee and their monkey bread
pastry, made by local bakery Julian’s,
is a favorite—which I can confirm!
Croissant type dough and cinnamon
that melts in the mouth. I was one
happy royal subject!
Sociology Coffee Bar
(sociologycoffeebar.com) was a name
that cropped up a few times from
baristas during my tour, “Have you been
to Sociology? You should go there,”
which is testament to the strength of
its coffee game. Their ethos is to offer
specialty coffee with creativity and
innovation; they want to surprise their
guests, excite with a flavor experience,
and present said offerings with a fun
flourish.
WHAT TO ORDER: Coffee influenced by
cocktails and alcoholic drinks are their
trademark such as the popular Teddy
Graham—ingredients shaken not stirred.
All food is made on site, including their
sourdough, but they’re especially proud
of their signature panito, a combination
of a burrito and a panini.
Sociology Coffee Bar
Temple
World Traveler Coffee Roasters
Founder Sean travelled around Asia
and found that temples were the places
where people came together. On his
return to the U.S., that was what he
named his coffee shops; and these days,
in Temple (templecoffeeroasters.com),
you’ll find people lining up out the door
to worship their coffee idol.
WHAT TO ORDER: Barista Ruslana tells
me their iced vanilla lattes are popular
as well as their Mexican mocha, made
with Ghirardelli and Mexican chocolate.
Estelle’s in Sacramento makes their
pastries and Ruslana finds it hard to
decide which is the best—the coffee cake
doughnut sounds divine though.
World Traveler Coffee Roasters is bright
and light with contemporary décor,
coffee from around the world, and a
refined atmosphere. There’s a gentle hum
of people “working from home” when I’m
there chatting to the regional manager.
WHAT TO ORDER: Their most popular
coffees are flavored with house-made
syrups: rose vanilla, brown sugar, and
honey lavender. In their Roseville location,
the beans are roasted and pastries and
patisserie goods handmade and crafted—
they really are beautiful and should be
seen—then eaten—to be believed.
My biggest takeaway was the passion for
coffee and community that lies behind
each one of these coffee shops. So, next
time you need a caffeine hit, consider
ditching the drive-thru and investing some
time in a coffee break and a local business.
in 1895, transmitted electricity to
Sacramento, making it one of the
longest electricity transmission lines at
the time.
Folsom Lake’s Hidden Town: Beneath
Folsom Lake lies the old mining town
of Mormon Island. During droughts,
you can sometimes see remnants of
the town’s foundations when the lake’s
water levels drop.
The Historic Truss Bridge: Folsom is
home to a rare iron truss bridge built
in 1893. It’s one of the oldest remaining
bridges of its kind in California and
is now a pedestrian crossing over the
American River.
Zoo Sanctuary’s Unique Residents:
The Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary
houses animals that cannot be
released into the wild, but one of the
most unusual residents was a bear
named Marty who rode a tricycle at
carnivals before being rescued.
Folsom Prison’s Music Legacy: Aside
from Johnny Cash’s famous concert,
Folsom Prison has a surprisingly long
musical history, hosting performances
from other artists like Metallica, which
recorded their “St. Anger” music video
at the prison.
Granite Quarries: In the 1800s, Folsom
was known for its granite quarries,
which provided material for significant
construction projects like the California
State Capitol building in Sacramento.
The Folsom Railroad: The Sacramento
Valley Railroad, built in 1856, was the
first passenger railroad west of the
Mississippi River. The terminus was
Folsom, which contributed significantly
to the city’s early growth.
Bike Capital of the World: Folsom
boasts over 60 miles of bike trails,
making it a cyclist’s paradise. It’s often
recognized as one of the most bikefriendly
cities in the U.S.
“Rainbow Bridge” Name Origin:
Folsom’s iconic bridge is called the
Rainbow Bridge, not because of its
shape, but due to the unique rainbowlike
reflection it casts in the American
River under certain lighting conditions.
The Folsom High School
Marching Band: Folsom High School’s
marching band is a powerhouse,
frequently winning state and national
competitions. They even performed in
the prestigious Tournament of Roses
Parade multiple times.
Folsom Area Schools: Of the top 10
public elementary schools in Sacramento
County, Folsom schools hold the number
1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10 spots.

Get on Board
STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING 101
{ By Caroline Kings }
Photo ©yossarian6 - stock.adobe.com.
The first time my family and I came to Folsom, we drove over Rainbow Bridge. I looked
out to the American River at Black Miners Bar, saw the water sparkling in the sunshine,
and a kaleidoscope of color: paddle boarders stood on boards of vibrant hues in their
high-vis life jackets, navigating the cool waters of the river with their paddles that
reflected the sun, sending light beams to entice passersby. It looked fun, wholesome,
and alive and, ultimately, made me want to live here.
SUP or stand-up paddle boarding is a popular pastime of Folsomites and it’s no wonder
when the city is nestled between Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma, two great bodies
of water that offer plenty of SUP
opportunities. The sport is easy to
start, which helped create the boom in
boarders during COVID: people could
be sociable, active, and in nature but
keep their distance from each other.
“COVID fueled the movement to get
outside, and highlighted activities such as
SUP. However, I believe it was just a matter
of time before the popularity of paddle
boarding would catch on. It’s just so
much fun! The peaceful feeling of floating
on water, the full body movement...
it’s so beneficial to the mind and body,”
explains Jaime Caluya of SUP California
(supcalifornia.com), a paddle boarding
rental store on Folsom Boulevard.
Photo ©pavel1964 - stock.adobe.com.
The city now boasts boarders of
varying abilities and luckily there’s
something for everyone, whether
you’re “dipping your toe” for the first
time (I mean, hopefully you’ll stay dry,
but you never know!) or ready for a
new SUP challenge.
GETTING STARTED
“What’s great about paddle boarding
is you don’t need a lot to get started.
The essentials are your board, paddle,
PFD (personal flotation device), and a
leash. You can also rent, so you don’t
need to spend a lot to try it out. I highly
recommend taking a beginner lesson. We
conduct lessons on Lake Natoma at the
Willow Creek entrance—a location that’s
great for beginners, as it’s a protected
little cove,” Caluya tells me (and she’s
correct as that’s where I had my first go,
shortly after we moved here).
Lake Natoma is a “world-class paddle
boarding venue,” Shelly Churilo, CEO and
founder of NorCal SUP (norcalsup.com),
elaborates, but also great for beginners.
“There isn’t a current and it’s dammed at
either end. It’s straight and there’s lots
to see.” There isn’t the boat traffic that
you find at Folsom Lake, so if you’re a
nervous or novice SUPer, this might be
the place to have a go.
NorCal SUP offers a wide range of
lessons for children and adults,
beginners, and the more experienced.
Water safety is one of their top
priorities, offering specific lessons
to children about how to assess a
waterway for dangers, understanding
when to turn back, and environmental
factors that might impact an enjoyable
paddle. Their family lessons ensure that
everyone is safe on the water, teaching
“buddy paddling” to help parents bring
children back to shore should they tire
or have had enough.
And it might sound ambitious but
Nick Clark of Spotted Dog Yoga &
SUP (spotteddogyoga.com/supyoga-adventures)
has many beginner
boarders at his SUP yoga classes—yes,
that’s practicing yoga on a board on
water. Nick and his wife Katie have a
land-based yoga business and added
SUP yoga in 2018, a decision that saved
their business during the pandemic.
Nick calls his classes “adventures,”
which I suggest sounds daunting, but
what he describes is more of a social
adventure than anything physical. “It’s
an SUP yoga class, but we’re socializing
and connecting with others in nature—
that, for me, is the most important part.”
And in case you’re wondering, Nick tells
me that very few people dip their toe,
or any other body part, in the water.
CHALLENGING SUP
“Messing about on the river” is all well
and good but you might feel ready for
something more challenging.
“Beyond a beginner lesson, get out
there and paddle. Paddle lots. Paddle
with other people who paddle lots.
The more you do it the stronger and
easier it gets,” advises Caluya. “SUP
California hosts free casual community
paddles each year, which typically
start up every July and are often held
Wednesday evenings at sunset, and
some holidays such as Thanksgiving
and New Year’s Day.”
But, if you’re looking for something
more competitive, NorCal SUP can
help you to start racing too. SUP is a
competitive sport as well as a bit of fun.
Churilo set up a youth paddle boarding
team—NorCal SUP GROMS—after her
children wanted to take their boarding
to the next level. Competitions are held
over varying distances and can be straight
or technical (navigating obstacles). For
SUPers of all ages, NorCal SUP teaches
racing technique and strategy.
They also host a Paddle Splash event
at the end of July. In 2024, they had 176
racers with crowds on the shore cheering
on. It was a very successful weekend
for all concerned and they’re already
planning the event for 2025 (July 25-27).
That kaleidoscope of color keeps
on turning on the American River. It
beckons us to connect with Folsom’s
nature in this wonderfully supportive
watersport community and to be a
part of something. It flexes your body
but relaxes your mind. Get on board—
be a part of Folsom’s ever-turning
rainbow on the river.
