Interview • 2
Excerpts:
– Share a brief history of Biesse India
and its operations in India, particularly
focusing on the glass division?
Founded in 2006 as an extension of
the Italian Biesse Group, Biesse India
has evolved significantly from a small
team of 13 people in a 1,000-squaremeter
facility to the Group’s largest
manufacturing unit outside Italy. Now
operating from two state-of-the-art
facilities in Bengaluru, covering over
35,000 square meters, Biesse India
designs, develops, and manufactures
a wide range of machinery,
demonstrating substantial growth
over 18 years.
While primarily known for its
woodworking solutions, Biesse India
has made notable advancements
in glass processing. The company
offers specialized machinery for
glass fabrication processes, including
cutting, edging, drilling, and polishing.
These machines serve various
applications, such as architectural,
automotive, furniture, and decorative
glass, addressing the diverse needs of
the glass fabrication and construction
industries.
Biesse India emphasizes research
and development to remain at
the forefront of glass processing
technology, featuring robust machine
construction with precise CNC
control, automated equipment for
better glass handling, and specialized
software for optimized glass
processing. The company provides
comprehensive pre-sales advice,
installation assistance, and after-sales
services, ensuring customers receive
full support and maintenance for
their equipment. This commitment
to innovation and customer service
has established Biesse India as a
significant player not only in glass
processing but also in stone and
wood processing.
– Biesse Group is known for cuttingedge
technology. Can you elaborate
on some of the latest technological
advancements in the glass division
that set Biesse apart from its
competitors?
Biesse has made remarkable
advancements in its glass division.
The machinery is equipped with
integrated automation systems that
enhance operational efficiency by
minimizing manual intervention,
reducing errors, and increasing
productivity, distinguishing the
company within the industry.
The Intermac Genius Cutting Table
machines incorporate sophisticated
software that optimizes cutting
paths, resulting in improved precision
and efficiency. Additionally, the
Movetro storage and handling
systems streamline the management
and handling of glass sheets.
The incorporation of 5-axis CNC
machining technology on Biesse
Master series machines allows for
the creation of intricate glass designs
with exceptional accuracy.
– How does Biesse ensure continuous
innovation in its glass cutting and
processing technologies?
Biesse invests heavily in R&D,
with specialized teams focused
on developing cutting-edge
technologies for glass processing.
The machines are designed to adapt
to the evolving needs of customers
across industries, enabling rapid
innovation and tailored solutions.
Biesse India manufactures high-tech
components in-house, ensuring
tight control over innovation and
performance.
Additionally, with a global
distribution network of 30 direct
subsidiary offices, Biesse monitors
local market demands and
trends, using this information for
new product development and
continuous improvement. The
company also invests heavily in
training its global service team,
and drive ongoing innovation. In
global reach, and employee training
drives continuous innovation in glass
cutting and processing solutions.
– Biesse has acquired several
international glass companies. Tell us
about some of these acquisitions.
Biesse has strategically strengthened
its glass division through several key
acquisitions. In 2022, the company
acquired Forvet, a manufacturer
of specialty equipment for glass
machining, for approximately €41
million, enhancing the product range
with complementary technologies
that support high productivity
by providing competitive solutions
tailored to the needs of glass
processing customers.
– How have these acquisitions
impacted Biesse’s operations in India,
particularly in terms of technology
These acquisitions have strengthened
the Biesse product portfolio,
enhancing offerings to the Indian
market. The company now has
machines to meet any type of glass
processing need for customers,
showcasing cutting-edge technology
and offering competitive, industryleading
solutions across the glass
processing industry.
– What advantages does the Make in
India initiative offer to Biesse’s glass
division?
The Make in India initiative offers
significant advantages to Biesse’s
glass division by attracting foreign
direct investment (FDI), which
enhances access to advanced
technologies and innovative practices
in glass manufacturing. It promotes
government efforts facilitates
smoother operations, while the focus
on innovation encourages further
investment in R&D, strengthening
Biesse’s capabilities in both domestic
and international markets.
This initiative has encouraged
substantial investments in expanding
manufacturing capabilities, allowing
Biesse to understand market
needs and develop solutions for
the wood, glass, and composite
materials industries at its state-ofthe-art
facility in Bengaluru. Biesse
has been able to diversify product
offerings, enabling the production of
advanced glass processing machinery
tailored to local and global markets.
Additionally, a commitment to
innovation and R&D has facilitated
job creation, skill development, and
exports, with nearly 85% of machines
produced in India now reaching over
75 countries.
– Can you provide examples of how
‘Make in India’ has influenced your
manufacturing processes and product
offerings in the glass division?
Biesse selected India as the location
for its sole manufacturing operations
outside Italy, establishing a plant
in Bengaluru in 2008. Long before
the ‘Make in India’ initiative gained
momentum, Biesse positioned
itself as a leader in export-oriented
production while also addressing
domestic market needs. Currently,
Biesse manufactures glass cutting
tables in India and plans to expand
local production to include additional
models and technologies in the
coming years.
– What is the current presence of
Biesse’s glass division in India in terms
of facilities, workforce, and market
reach?
Biesse operates a state-of-the-art
manufacturing facility in Bengaluru,
India, where both woodworking
and glass processing machines are
produced. To effectively serve the
market, Biesse has assembled a
skilled sales and service team that
caters to customers not only in
India but also in neighboring SAARC
nations, including Bangladesh, Nepal,
Bhutan, and Sri Lanka.
– How do you plan to expand Biesse’s
footprint in the Indian glass market in
the coming years?
With an enhanced product portfolio,
Biesse is poised to implement clear
year-by-year strategic growth plans
in India. The glass industry is rapidly
expanding, and Biesse India is eager
to reach new heights and increase its
market share.
– What are the key trends and
challenges you see in the Indian glass
industry, and how is Biesse positioning
itself to address them and stay ahead
of the competition?*
India is known for being a pricesensitive
market, which enables
Chinese manufacturers to sell
products even if they do not meet
international quality standards.
Biesse prioritizes value-based
product positioning over pricebased
strategies, and its dedicated
after-sales and spare parts supply
teams based out of Bengaluru ensure
machines remain operational without
breakdowns, helping customers
meet production and delivery
commitments. Biesse stands as the
only reputable local manufacturer of
glass processing machines in India,
representing a European brand with
a robust manufacturing presence in
the country.
– How does Biesse ensure the
sustainability and quality of its
products in the glass division?
Biesse ensures sustainability and
quality in its glass division through
renewable energy use, sustainable
product development, and circular
economy practices, as detailed in its
Sustainability Report. The company
employs a comprehensive Quality
Management System (QMS), certified
since 1996, which emphasizes
continuous improvement,
employee training, and customer
feedback integration. This focus
on minimizing waste and energy
consumption during manufacturing
and creating durable, recyclable
products enhances both quality and
environmental responsibility.
– What are your goals for Biesse’s glass
division in India?
Biesse is optimistic about the growth
of the glass industry in the coming
years, with rapid urbanization and
real estate expansion driving demand
for high-quality glass. The company is
committed to offering multi-material
solutions across wood, glass, stone,
and composites, which find extensive
applications across sectors such as
furniture, interiors, construction,
automotive, and aerospace.
categorically that glasstec 2024 has
been one of the best editions in the
more than 26 years that Turomas has
the fair’s impact: “The most
remarkable thing for me is the great
interest aroused in customers of
all nationalities for the solutions
presented at the fair: cutting tables
glass with new features, software
applications and automation of
the storage process and use of
scraps. Our solutions have attracted
hundreds of visitors to the Turomas
stand who have been attended by
almost 30 members of our extensive
and growing sales network in a
very professional and personalised
manner and with the usual proximity
typical of the Turomas company
philosophy. For all these reasons,
we can only make a very positive
assessment of the fair and we hope
that in the coming weeks we will be
able to see the fruit of all the effort,
at all levels, that has been put into
glasstec 2024.”
Marketing Manager Teresa Catalán
said, “We returned from glasstec
with great satisfaction and the
illusion of having shared these days
with the sector, our customers, the
commercial network and the team.
It has been a fantastic experience
that both our products and our stand
had. After 26 years participating
in this event, we can proudly say
that this has been one of the most
great Turomas team - production,
added.
Spain and Portugal area manager
Álvaro Doñate added, “Surely the
most intense fair I have experienced
in my 20 years at Turomas, in line with
the investment made and possibly
with results that exceed expectations
thanks to the large number of
customers and the generated
“I would like to thank all the
customers and friends who visited us
from all over the world, from South
America to Australia, and in particular
the Spanish and Portuguese people
with whom I live daily and who help
us to make Turomas a reference… We
would also like to thank our national
and Portuguese sales network for
their hard work,” he said.
Europe area manager Oriol Llorens
described it as a resounding success
for the European market. “This year,
numerous customers from all over
Europe have visited our stand already
familiar with Turomas’ strengths,
showing outstanding interest and
making specific requests based on
our solutions, resulting in meetings
of exceptional quality and further
consolidating our presence and
prestige in the market.”
State-of-the-art machinery
on display
At glasstec, Turomas presented a
comprehensive lineup of smart
storage, loading, and automatic
glass cutting solutions, along with
its innovative software suite. Key
technologies showcased included:
in various thicknesses and lowemission
layers, increasing production
compared to conventional loaders.
It integrates with SG - SaveGlass
intelligent remnant storage,
enhancing automation in loading and
unloading processes. All components
that come into contact with the glass
have been carefully selected to avoid
any damage to the under-emissive
layers. They are robust, reliable and
modular machines that have been
designed with the latest technologies
to work autonomously for both
standard and jumbo-sized sheets.
SG-06 SaveGlass: This system
securely stores glass remnants for
later use, optimizing storage space
and retrieval efficiency. It operates
independently or as part of any
Turomas automatic storage system,
offering tailored solutions for
customer needs.
RUBI 517C High Production Cutting
Line: High-production cutting line
for monolithic glass. Driven by
magnetic linear motor technology—a
technology pioneered and introduced
by TUROMAS almost 20 years
ago—this table offers outstanding
performance: a maximum speed of
310 m/min and, most importantly, an
acceleration of 19 m/s². It is equipped
with the exclusive 4-Tool system,
featuring four independent cutting
tools specifically designed to achieve
a perfect cut on any thickness of glass
without requiring adjustments by the
operator.
The machine displayed at Glasstec
was equipped with the ACR advanced
stripping system, also exclusive to
the brand, designed to remove in a
single pass both the Low-E coatings
and the plastic protections of TPF
glass or the EasyPro® glass coating.
It incorporates patented innovations
that enhance the glass stripping
process, such as an advanced cooling
system and a two-stage stripping
system that prevents the edges of
the protective layer from peeling off.
Additionally, the equipment includes
The table is also equipped with
a laser marking system for the
identification and traceability of each
glass piece and scrap. Installed on the
cutting bridge, this system increases
the machine’s overall performance
while maintaining compact
dimensions. Designed for high-speed
cutting line for laminated
glass is aimed at companies seeking
a versatile, automatic machine with
top-quality cutting capabilities
for thicknesses from 2+2 to 10+10.
Compactly designed, it features a
useful cutting length of 4.7 m and
a system length of 3.3 m. Turomas
incorporates in this range its new
cutting and separation system, which
reduces the cycle time of each cut by
10 seconds and allows cutting with
the butyral slightly heated to improve
the final result.
The measuring trolley has been
specially designed so that, together
with a loading table equipped with
MCC belts, the process of loading,
positioning, cutting, and unloading
the glass is fully automated. This
system optimizes the efficiency and
precision of each cutting operation.
Additionally, the LAM 405 includes
an advanced positioning and cutting
system for straight shapes and railings
in laminated safety glass. This system
consists of two mechanical stops that
enable agile and precise positioning,
eliminating the need for additional
tools and reducing cutting time.
Turomas also set up a dedicated
totem to showcase its available
software applications, allowing
visitors to interact with and visualize
the potential of the company’s digital
solutions. Tools such as StockGlass,
Cutting TV, and SmartGlass took
center stage, demonstrating how
digitalization and automation are
transforming the flat glass industry.
Visitors could also explore
sedak expands production
capacity for anisotropyfree
glass with new
insulating line
Enhances Ability To Meet Growing Demand For High-
Quality, Large-Format Tempered Glass
With the launch of an advanced insulating glass
production line, sedak increases capacity to deliver
premium, anisotropy-free tempered glass to a broader
market.
Sedak, a global leader in glass
refining, is expanding its
production capacity for sedak
tempered+ with a new insulating
glass production line. This investment
aims to drive greater market
penetration for sedak tempered+,
particularly in large-scale projects
requiring uniform glass sizes. The new
line accommodates formats up to 6
meters, making anisotropy-free glass
more accessible for such applications.
“The demand for sedak tempered+
is enormous. The anisotropy-free
glass has quickly established itself
in the market. The first projects
featuring ‘tempered+’ quality are
tempered+ is the new quality
standard in tempered glass. To meet
the growing demand, we will also be
offering formats that were previously
uncommon for sedak. Our goal is to
make this premium quality accessible
to a broader market.”
The new insulating glass line
enhances sedak’s flexibility and
productivity, accommodating largevolume
orders with standardized
pane sizes. Equipped with a rotating
and tilting station, the line simplifies
the integration of toggle systems,
reinforcing sedak’s position as a
technology leader in the market.
Anisotropy-free insulating
glass
sedak tempered+ is the first
tempered glass without visible
anisotropies, produced using a
patented tempering process. This
process enables the production
of heat-strengthened and fully
tempered glass with optimal optical
clarity, free from the typical shimmer
associated with anisotropies. As
insulating glass, sedak tempered+
meets high architectural demands for
energy efficiency and transparency in
glass facades.
About the company
Founded in 2007, sedak has
built a reputation as a premium
manufacturer of large-format
changing world, industries that rely
on traditional/conventional methods
must adapt to this transformation.”
“We believe that Plant of the
Future will not only transform
Sisecam’s production operations and
processes but also offer significant
opportunities for advancing the
industry. With contributions from our
business partners, we aim to build
model in the upcoming future. As
we progress toward our goals of
operational excellence, optimization,
digitalization and sustainability, this
platform will generate practical, welldesigned
and innovative solutions,”
he added.
“In doing so, it will create an
ecosystem where we envision
together, design together, implement
together, operate together and in
return grow together, paving the way
for collective development with all
of our stakeholders. We are aware
that tomorrow’s needs must be
addressed today, which is why we are
committed to building the future of
the glass industry now. I invite all our
business partners to join us in this
great transformation. We sincerely
believe that the key to progress lies
in the collaborations we establish,”
Elverici said.
The platform will initially focus
on glass packaging and flat glass
production, with Sisecam testing
development projects in these areas.
Successful solutions will be swiftly
publicly accessible roof garden forms
an outstanding element of the new
MOL headquarters in the south of
Budapest.
It is the tallest building in the
country and may remain so for a long
time, following the high-rise ban
in the Hungarian capital passed in
2018. However, the elegantly upwardswinging
façade, which merges the
5-story podium housing restaurants
and conference halls with the
29-story tower into a single unit, is
the real architectural highlight of the
MOL Campus.
Architecture for the working
world in the 21st century
This design by London-based Foster
and Partners, created in collaboration
with Finta Studio, reflects the
changes in the working world in the
21st century. Developments such as
remote working, changing project
teams, job sharing, and requirements
like cooperation versus retreat spaces
demand maximum flexibility from
modern office buildings throughout
their entire lifespan.
The mix of workspaces and garden
areas, from the atrium to the top
of the MOL Campus tower, not
only connects the individual floors
but also the people. It is intended
to create an inspiring and relaxing
atmosphere. According to the
architects, daylight, fresh air, and
the unique view of Budapest bring
employees into harmony with both
nature and their urban surroundings.
The inner-city location also makes it
possible for many employees to walk
or bike to work.
Lighthouse project
for convenience and
sustainability
Like many corporations, Hungarian
oil and natural gas company
MOL is undergoing a sustainable
transformation to be ready for the
low-carbon circular economy. The
new corporate headquarters, with
a total area of 86,000 m² and a
capacity of 2,500 workplaces, acts
as a lighthouse project in this goal,
aiming for BREEAM Excellent and
LEED Platinum certification.
The entire heating and cooling
system will be powered by
renewable energy sources, including
photovoltaics, as well as a geothermal
system with a total borehole length of
32,800 m. Rainwater is collected for
use in watering plants and flushing
toilets.
The aluminum-glass façade is
composed of 24,800 m² of element
façade and 1,700 m² of post-andbeam
façade, prefabricated and
assembled by Scheldebouw. A
total of around 14,000 m² of flat
insulating glazing was supplied by
AGC Interpane Plattling. Around
500 cylindrically curved (convex and
concave) and multi-curved panes,
some with extreme curvature, were
manufactured at Finiglas in Dülmen.
For the four-sided structural
glazing system, partly as toggle
glazing and partly with acoustic film,
colour-neutral Clearvision was used
throughout, with Stopray Vision
50/50T double silver coating on the
outside. The flat, double-glazed units
consist of laminated safety glass on
the outside and 6 mm toughened
safety glass or laminated safety glass/
TVG on the inside.
The triple-glazed units consist of
10 mm toughened safety glass on
the outside, 6 mm toughened safety
glass with screen printing on position
2, and laminated safety glass/TVG
with thermal insulation coating on
the inside. The curved insulating glass
units are made with VSG on both
sides. Super Spacer® SG in 16 mm
and 18 mm sizes was used as warmedge
spacers.
To ensure a distortion-free view,
Koltay Façades specified annealed
laminated glass where possible. Due
to the extensive glazing, daylight
can be used in 90 per cent of the
rooms. Modern building automation,
individual shading options, and
chilled ceilings prevent overheating
and ensure comfort.
The Ucw-value of the curtain
wall in the tower is a maximum of
1.4 W/m²K, while the Ug-value for
the glazing, at a maximum of 1.0 W/
m²K, meets the local requirements
for passive houses, although triple
glazing was only used for skylight
glazing.
3D modelling makes freeform
geometry possible
A constant digital flow of information
between design, engineering,
planning, and production teams
ensured that the iconic shape of the
building could be implemented as
efficiently and cost-effectively as
possible. Even though double-curved
insulating glass units play a key role
in the building’s elegant appearance,
they were used as sparingly as
possible.
Agnes Koltay explains: “The
transition between the podium and
the tower of MOL Campus only runs
over two floors. Therefore, doublecurved
glass was considered in
this area to ensure fluidity, instead
of approaching the curvature by
faceting the panes. Additionally,
the two podium floors and tower
floors have very different footprints,
which also lead to curved shapes. To
ease buildability, we optimized the
bending radii and the arrangement
of the modules, among other
improvements in the modulation,
and fine-tuned the geometry.”
BIM is now standard for large
projects of this type, and Koltay
Façades relies on parametric design
for free-form façades to optimize the
geometry as well as the individual
modules and to be able to update
the plans automatically.
In addition to the different wind
loads for flat, curved, and doublecurved
glass, structural, acoustic,
and safety requirements had to
be considered and simulated. The
nearby rail lines and train station
increase the external noise level on
one side of the building.
Koltay Façades Engineering
uses in-house developed Rhino
scripts for 3D modeling and digital
tools for finite element analysis of
aluminum and glass structures. “Our
responsibility is to transform the
surface-only model into an accurately
dimensioned 3D model that includes
all details such as fastening zones
and joint gaps,” Agnes Koltay adds.
Super Spacer® specified for
curved insulating glass units
As a spacer, Koltay Façades specified
Super Spacer®, a proven system.
“The Opus” by Zaha Hadid and the
spectacular Killa-designed “Museum
of the Future” in Dubai are just two
of the most prestigious free-form
façades designed by Koltay Façades
and realized with Super Spacer®.
“The decision was driven by the
curved insulating glasses, which are
almost impossible to realize with rigid
spacers. In addition, small tolerance
deviations can occur at the edges
of the curved glasses during the
manufacturing process. The structural
foam compensates for this with its
ability to deform and adapt to the
space between the panes,” Agnes
Koltay concludes.
Joachim Stoss, Managing Director
of Edgetech Europe GmbH and Vice
President of International Sales at
Quanex, is satisfied: “Free-form,
organic façades are one of the most
important architectural trends of
recent years. Without a continuous
3D model chain from design to
production, but also without flexible
components like the Super Spacer,
they would only be very complex,
slow, and expensive to implement, if
at all. We are, of course, happy to be
on board again for this prestigious
European project.”
LiSEC & vandaglas:
How training can boost
production, increase yield
Collaborative Training Sessions Improve Production
Efficiency And Workforce Skills In Glass
Manufacturing
vandaglas and LiSEC partner up to provide advanced
training that optimizes production processes and
enhances employee expertise.
vandaglas, based in Emmen,
Netherlands, is a renowned
manufacturer of insulating
glass. Following the installation of
two LiSEC VSL-A laminated glass
cutting lines, vandaglas and LiSEC
collaborated on training sessions to
maximize the machines’ potential
and determine the ideal parameters.
vandaglas Emmen is part of the
European vandaglas group of glass
manufacturers. Operating since 1998,
the production in Emmen employs
125 people, 70 of whom work in
production across three shifts. The
main product at vandaglas Emmen is
insulating glass in various shapes and
sizes, primarily for the Dutch market.
Its target customers are mainly
business-to-business, including large
construction companies and local
craftsmen. The company emphasizes
high quality, sustainability, and close
collaboration with customers to
continuously improve its products
and services.
Transforming production:
Collaborative training
initiative
As vandaglas in Emmen expanded,
the need for advanced technology
became apparent. The company
faced challenges with outdated
machinery and the need for a more
data-driven approach to improve
efficiency and product quality.
“To be well-prepared for the
future, collecting data is essential.
While machine data is crucial,
customer data is equally important to
keep them informed about the status
of their products. LiSEC was able to
offer a comprehensive data-driven
solution, which is why we chose
to partner with them,” said Jacco
Simonsz, vandaglas Process Engineer.
To enhance their glass cutting
capabilities, vandaglas initially
integrated two LiSEC VSL-A lines for
laminated glass cutting, including
storage cranes and shuttles, into their
production. After the installation,
it soon became apparent that the
technology challenged the operators
in new ways, requiring more solid
knowledge of how to handle the
machines in order to tap into their
full potential.
LiSEC and vandaglas partnered
to conduct training sessions offered
by LiSEC to optimize vandaglas’
production. LiSEC provided tailored
training sessions, adapted to the
specific requirements of vandaglas
employees by highly skilled LiSEC
trainers like Andreas Rumetshofer.
These sessions included both
theoretical and practical
components.
The first training sessions were
held directly at the LiSEC VSL-A
cutting lines at vandaglas in Emmen.
The on-site training covered various
aspects, including the operation of
the new cutting lines, maintenance
procedures, and the importance of
data in production processes. The
focus was on understanding how
the glass-cutting process works, why
certain issues occur based on the
condition of the glass, and how to
optimize the process using different
recipes.
As the benefits of the training
became evident, vandaglas decided
to send four employees to Austria
for training on the insulating glass
machines, as the company had
recently invested in the LiSEC
insulating glass line.
Employees were given the
opportunity to work directly with
their new LiSEC machinery during
the training. This hands-on approach
helped them understand the
intricacies of the machines and how
to troubleshoot common issues.
The training also included creating
simulated problems for employees
to solve, enhancing their problemsolving
skills and confidence in
handling the machinery.
After the training at LiSEC, the
four vandaglas employees returned
to Emmen with extensive operator
knowledge and a renewed sense of
motivation and passion for the new
LiSEC machinery. “Most people see
training as a cost, but it is actually
an investment – you invest in
your people and you invest in your
machine, and in the end, it pays off
with higher-skilled employees that
take ownership, less downtime, and
a longer machine life,” said Jacco
Simonsz.
But the training does not end after
the LiSEC trainer leaves the room.
LiSEC provides ongoing support even
after the initial training sessions, and
each participant leaves with a booklet
and an online version that contains
all the necessary information
learned during the training. Regular
exchanges of information between
both companies ensure that
employees remain updated with the
latest techniques and best practices.
Benefits of LiSEC training
1. Improved efficiency and quality
The new LiSEC cutting lines and the
comprehensive training programs
significantly improved production
efficiency. The number of breakages
and remakes decreased, leading
to higher productivity and reduced
waste.
“We invested a lot of time in the
new cutting line and gained lots of
experience through the trainings,
which helped us reduce breakages
tremendously,” said Ben Fennema,
Technical Manager of vandaglas. The
data-driven approach of the LiSEC
machines allowed vandaglas to better
analyze production processes and
make informed decisions, further
enhancing efficiency.
2. Enhanced employee skills
Ben Fennema added: “While the
increased automation in new
machines reduces the physical
strength required for the job, it also
demands a higher level of expertise
to operate them correctly.”
Through training, employees
gained a deeper understanding of the
LiSEC machinery and the importance
of maintenance and data analysis
in order to achieve high-quality
output. This knowledge translated
into better handling of the machines,
fewer operational issues, and
better output quality. The training
also fostered a sense of ownership
among employees, who now view
the machinery as their own and take
greater responsibility for its upkeep
and performance.
3. Positive cultural shift
Changing to a new brand for their
new insulating glass lines was a
significant change for some of
vandaglas’ employees, as each
brand has a unique way of operation.
Sending employees to training
at LiSEC before even having
the machinery at the vandaglas
production facility in the Netherlands
greatly increased the acceptance of
the change among employees.
“One of the most important
aspects is the change in mindset
among the people. While acquiring
knowledge and learning the
intricacies of the machinery are
crucial, adapting to the new system
is equally significant. This shift in
mindset is why the training provided
by LiSEC is so beneficial. It ensures
that employees are well-prepared
to embrace and effectively use the
new system,” said Dolf Kuiper, plant
manager at vandaglas Emmen.
The employees trained on the
insulating glass lines at the LiSEC inhouse
training center brought back
so much motivation that it led to a
positive cultural shift. Now everyone
is looking forward to having the new
LiSEC lines in Emmen. The LiSEC
training programs also brought about
a positive cultural shift within the
company, as employees became
more open to learning something
new, and the willingness to embrace
new technologies increased.
Empowering employees
and enhancing production
through LiSEC training
The collaboration between both
companies has significantly
transformed vandaglas’ production
processes. The tailored training
sessions provided by LiSEC both onsite
and in Austria have enhanced
the skills of vandaglas employees,
leading to improved efficiency, less
downtime, reduced waste, and higher
product quality.
The ongoing support and regular
exchange of information between
the two companies ensure that
vandaglas remains at the forefront of
technological advancements in the
glass manufacturing industry.
“During our visit to vandaglas, we
were invited to a feedback session
with the supervisors who had just
returned from training at LiSEC in
Austria. It was wonderful to see
the motivation and anticipation for
the new LiSEC equipment on the
faces of the training participants.
The joy they expressed reassures us
that we are on the right track with
LiSEC customer training,” said Stefan
Danner, Head of Training at LiSEC.
This partnership not only
underscores the importance of
investing in advanced technology
and employee training but also
highlights the positive cultural shift
within vandaglas, fostering a more
motivated and skilled workforce.
With the new investment in the
MAC’s smart
manufacturing series
— the shape of future
factories
Making Factories Intelligent, Giving Glass New
Identity & Introducing Higher Production Value
Discover how smart glass factories are transforming
production with intelligent systems, automation and
advanced software solutions.
The deep glass processing
industry is undergoing a
significant transformation:
from disorder to order, from passive
processing to proactive management,
and from risk to safety.
This evolution has led to
improved product quality control,
optimized efficiency, reduced energy
consumption and labor involvement,
enhanced production management,
and upgraded safety in production.
Let us explore the intelligent
production of deep glass processing
and how MAC empowers smart glass
factories.
Upgrading to a smart factory
usually involves three steps.
The first step is upgrading its
management, transitioning from
traditional extensive management to
one that bases investment on market
analysis, analyzes capacity according
to order structure, determines pricing
based on actual losses, and optimizes
capacity through lean processes to
reduce costs.
The second step is automation
upgrading, where optimizing factory
logistics and achieving efficient
automation and intelligence
significantly improve product quality
and reduce labor involvement.
This involves
;;
Intelligent raw glass storage
system, intermediate product
storage and sorting system,
and finished product storage
system
;;
Intelligent marking system and
identification system
;;
Intelligent furnace batching
system
;;
Intelligent sorting and pairing
system
;;
Automated conveying
mechanism
The third step is functional machines
upgrading. Truly intelligent machines
represent the ultimate challenge for
a smart factory, requiring an in-depth
analysis of processes and absolute
control over production. This involves
fully automatic edging and preprocessing
equipment upgrades, an
intelligent tempering furnace, and
fully automated smart insulating glass
production modules.
Based on this three-step
approach, we can start a new journey
towards intelligence, starting with
software.
Software upgrade
ERP serves as the core database
for a deep glass processing factory,
covering a series of functional
modules ranging from sales orders,
procurement, material management,
production, and dispatch to finance.
However, traditional ERP systems
do not include production modules
and are not able to effectively
manage processing equipment. For
instance, when handling complex
glass orders (such as a set of
insulating glass with 5mm tempered
glass + 0.38mm PVB interlayer
+ 5mm tempered glass + 6mm
Aluminum spacer + 5mm LOW-E
glass), traditional ERP systems cannot
define each piece of glass or material,
making it impossible to achieve true
order management and tracking.
In contrast, MAC’s ERP is a
specialized system developed
specifically for deep glass processing
equipment. It seamlessly manages
and tracks each piece of glass in
complex orders.
A factory-wide ERP+MES system
can even effectively manage each
piece of processing equipment,
optimize orders, and decompose
them into independent equipment
instructions, processing them in
a language the equipment can
understand.
By extracting production data from
the ERP+MES system, calculating the
effective capacity of each individual
piece of equipment and the actual
cost of each order becomes much
easier.
The logistics optimization
Next is the logistics optimization
stage. A typical example of this is
optimizing the process from raw glass
storage to cutting.
Every piece of raw glass begins its
journey through the processing plant
with cutting. Before cutting, ensuring
the correct and efficient identification of the corresponding glass is one
of the production steps that require improvement. Based on the order
information in the ERP system, the glass is optimized and coordinated
between the raw glass storage system and the cutting machine, ensuring
smooth subsequent processing.
This process acts as a powerful brain for the glass warehouse, enhancing
the optimization rate by 3 to 5 percent by combining online and offline glass
storage information. Through an automated raw glass conveying system, the
glass can be safely and efficiently transported to the cutting line.
The intelligent cutting line represents a significant evolution from the
traditional cutting line. The traditional cutting line can only cut according
to optimization packages, while the cutting line in an intelligent factory
assigns an identity to each piece of glass. This can be achieved by adding an
independent laser marking machine or replacing the traditional cutting line
with a two-in-one laser marking and cutting machine.
At the same time, an intelligent connection from cutting to edging can
also be achieved.
After cutting, glass pieces are usually in a disorganized state, and orders
are scattered. Glass of the same thickness but different sizes must be
reorganized without unloading to glass racks and directly balanced with the
production rhythm of the cutting and edging machines before entering the
edging machine.
Technical Article
To achieve maximum efficiency in edging and reduce quality issues or
safety risks caused by manual intervention, a horizontal sorting system can
be used for glass sorting and conveying. Different solutions are required
depending on the type of edging, such as a horizontal seaming machine or a
double edger.
Intelligent connection from edging to tempering
The concept in this stage is similar to the one above, but now we need to
handle the layout of multiple glass pieces and feed them into the tempering
furnace. Depending on the customer’s order structure and the available
space, MAC can provide either a horizontal or vertical sorting system.
Additional components such as ladders, shuttle systems, and multiple sorting
crates are needed to manage the transition from handling single glass pieces
to multiple pieces. The logic for batching glass before tempering includes
several options, such as maximizing the loading rate of the tempering furnace,
order priority, optimizing quality, and ensuring the highest efficiency. These
tasks require powerful logic algorithms and reliable mechanical equipment to
execute effectively.
Furthermore, the sorting system also plays a significant role in energy
saving. In regions with varying electricity rates, different processing operations
can be scheduled at different times. For instance, in China, intelligent factories
can complete most of the tempering work at night and store the tempered
glass in sorting crates for use in the production of insulated or laminated glass
during the daytime. Without an intelligent sorting system, achieving this level
of efficiency without increasing labor would be impossible.
Intelligent connection from tempering to insulated and
laminated glass production
This stage once again highlights the powerful capabilities of MAC’s software
system. As the variety of glass types increases, along with the complexity of
sizes, thicknesses, and combinations,
managing orders becomes
increasingly challenging. MAC’s
sorting system can automatically
identify and match different types of
glass, guiding them to the insulated
or laminated glass production lines,
and even freely manage complicated
laminated and insulated glass orders.
The intelligent factory breaks through
traditional production bottlenecks,
effectively solving issues related
to glass quality control, matching/
pairing, and order tracking.
Before the advent of computers,
we could never have imagined the
profound changes they would bring.
Similarly, the emergence of a smart
factory will usher in a transformative
industrial revolution.
As Shakespeare’s Hamlet suggests,
there can be as many different
solutions as there are smart factories.
MAC offers 100 percent customized
solutions to help each client excel in
their area of expertise.
Whether you are involved in
architectural glass, shower doors,
appliance glass, automotive glass, or
photovoltaic glass, MAC can provide
tailored solutions. This is all made
possible by the company’s powerful
software system that integrates each
functional device.
The MAC team is ready to offer
even more comprehensive solutions
in the future.
In the factories of the future, every
piece of glass, every glass rack, every
worker, every machine, and every
consumable will be traceable. Their
origins and destinations, their OEE
will be transparent.
There will be no secrets in the
future factory, only real data. Are you
ready to engage with data?
