MINIMALISM
VOLUME 98 NOVEMBER 2024
Minimalism, when executed with depth, invites a sense of calm and
clarity, echoing the philosophy that "simplicity is the ultimate
sophistication," as often quoted in design circles. Materials like smooth
concrete, warm white oak, and blackened steel ground these spaces,
adding organic warmth without distraction. The palette remains subtle,
with tonal contrasts highlighting textures and form over
embellishment. Each piece—a carefully crafted chair, a seamless stone
countertop—reflects a commitment to quality. Inspired by the purity of
Japanese design and the elegant restraint of Scandinavian aesthetics,
minimalism reveals its quiet strength. It isn’t an absence; rather, it’s the
presence of only what truly matters, igniting a serene, balanced
atmosphere.

This Amagansett Compound exemplifies refined coastal modernism with a warm, organic palette. The home
features extensive use of bleached white oak paneling and flooring, creating a serene, light-filled atmosphere.
Concrete elements, particularly in the kitchen countertops and fireplace, add industrial sophistication while
maintaining a natural feel. The color scheme is predominantly neutral, with soft greys, warm woods, and sage
green upholstery. Modern elements like bulbous pendant lights and minimalist furnishings are balanced with
rustic touches like woven chairs and rough-hewn wooden benches. Large glass windows blur indoor-outdoor
boundaries, while black-framed accents and fixtures provide subtle contrast. The overall aesthetic achieves a
perfect balance between luxury and understated beach house comfort.

INSIDE MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2024
UNPRETENTIOUS
The Amagansett Compound, designed by architect Adam
Jordan with interiors by Eric Petschek, exemplifies modern
sophistication fused with organic materials, creating a warm,
inviting retreat in the heart of Long Island. This residential
project includes a main house and a guest house set within
serene, expansive grounds, offering a seamless blend of
architecture and landscape.
The architecture focuses on clean lines and natural materials,
embracing a contemporary style that harmonizes with the
environment. Cedar cladding and concrete elements ground the
structures, offering both durability and elegance. The cedar, left
untreated to weather over time, echoes the natural landscape,
reinforcing the connection to its surroundings. The house’s
design, featuring gabled roofs and expansive glass windows,
draws inspiration from the vernacular architecture of the area
but reinterprets it with a modern edge. The combination of
wood, glass, and concrete brings an industrial touch, balanced
by warm textures and a subdued color palette.
The interiors, curated by Eric Petschek, underscore the house's
modern, minimalist approach while introducing layers of
comfort. Petschek’s design choices incorporate organic
materials, such as oak wood floors and stone, which add texture
and depth to the space. In the living areas, custom furniture
pieces crafted from walnut and other richly-grained woods
create a cohesive aesthetic that is both functional and
luxurious. A centerpiece in the living room is a statement
artwork that adds a burst of color, creating visual interest
against the otherwise neutral tones. The furniture selection
emphasizes comfort without sacrificing style, featuring plush,
upholstered sofas, minimalist coffee tables, and bespoke seating.
Each room is purposefully designed to maximize the natural
light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a
tranquil atmosphere that changes with the light throughout the
day.
The home’s fixtures and finishes are carefully selected to align
with the natural theme. Brass accents are thoughtfully
incorporated, providing a touch of sophistication while
blending seamlessly with the surrounding materials. The
bathrooms feature marble vanities and minimalist fixtures,
continuing the clean, uncluttered aesthetic seen throughout the
home. The kitchen, equipped with high-end appliances, offers a
modern, functional space for cooking and gathering, with
custom cabinetry that complements the home’s wooden
textures.
Landscape design plays a significant role in the overall feel of
the compound. Working with a local landscaping team, the
architects and designers created a series of outdoor spaces that
extend the living areas and provide a connection between the
structures and their environment. The landscape incorporates
native plants and grasses, blending with the natural scenery
and requiring minimal maintenance. Pathways of stone pavers
lead through manicured lawns and naturalistic plantings,
creating a sense of flow between the main house, guest house,
and outdoor seating areas. Low concrete walls and planters
define the garden areas, adding structure without detracting
from the organic feel of the landscape. The outdoor spaces,
including a terrace and seating areas, offer a perfect setting for
relaxation, entertaining, and enjoying the beauty of the natural
surroundings.
The project’s success is attributed to the collaborative efforts of
Adam Jordan’s architectural vision, Eric Petschek’s interior
design expertise, and the work of skilled craftspeople and
landscapers. This team approach ensured that every aspect of
the home was executed with precision and care, from the
structural elements to the finishing details. The Amagansett
Compound shows the possibilities of contemporary design that
respects and enhances its environment, providing a peaceful
retreat that embodies luxury in harmony with nature.

REFINED MATERIALS AND SOFT LIGHT DEFINE THE KITCHEN’S
COHESIVE DESIGN.
The kitchen embodies understated luxury through its thoughtful materiality and minimalist
design. The centerpiece is a substantial concrete waterfall island with a seamless profile,
complemented by warm walnut bar stools. Bleached oak paneling wraps the walls and ceiling,
creating a cohesive envelope that's punctuated by sleek black pendant lights. The
professional-grade appliances maintain a low profile in gunmetal finishes. Natural light
floods in through floor-to-ceiling windows, casting beautiful shadows across the wide-plank
oak flooring. The layout flows effortlessly between the dining area with its rustic bench
seating and woven-back chairs, fostering a casual yet sophisticated entertaining space.
Carefully curated details like fresh produce in earthenware bowls and simple greenery in
ceramic vessels add lived-in warmth to the pristine design.

MINIMALIST ELEGANCE MERGES WITH WILD BEAUTY FOR A TRANQUIL
RETREAT.
The outdoor space exemplifies modern Hamptons living with its refined balance of structure
and nature. The lap pool, finished in dark gunite, creates a dramatic mirror effect that
reflects the contemporary architecture. A minimalist steel pergola in pale grey provides
elegant shade for loungers upholstered in crisp light grey cushions. The landscape design
shows restraint, with natural meadow grasses allowed to grow wild against manicured lawn
sections, creating an organic transition to the surrounding environment. The home's vertical
wood cladding and expansive glazing are complemented by concrete elements that frame
outdoor living spaces. The overall effect is one of sophisticated restraint, where architectural
elements harmonize with the natural coastal setting rather than competing with it.
