The rise of natural plant
fibres being used in
mattresses
It’s safe to say that over the last few years the popularity of Natural
Fibre mattresses has only continued to grow. In particular,
mattresses that use Natural Plant Fibres are on the rise, with many
sleepers opting for them instead of animal fibres.
But what exactly has
caused this rise? And
what makes Natural Plant
Fibres in mattresses a great
choice for you?
Excellent ethical materials
Unlike synthetic alternatives,
natural plant fibres can be continually
replenished over time, and
their supply isn’t nearly as limited
as animal fibres. The plants that
produce these fibres can be
grown and harvested over and
over, which has numerous environmental
benefits, such as the
absorption of C02. Mattresses
that use these natural plant fibres
are great for the environment,
and even the organic wastes
produced during processing can
be recycled and used elsewhere.
For example, organic plant flax
is pretty much waste-free, as the
oil pressed from flax seeds can
be used in a wide range of other
products.
Vegetarian and vegan friendly
Like many other people, you
might be leading a vegetarian or
vegan focused lifestyle, which
means having a suitable mattress
that doesn’t use any animal
products or fibres is a must.
Thankfully, mattresses that use
natural plant fibres are perfectly
suited for this, and we have a
number of vegan and vegetarian
friendly mattresses, such as our
origins reflex.
Effective temperature regulation
Natural plant fibres are not only
incredibly breathable, they have
extremely effective moisture
wicking properties. For anyone
who happens to be a hot
sleeper, a mattress that uses
Natural Plant Fibre fillings can
be a perfect solution to help you
sleep soundly. Take Bamboo for
example, which can quickly wick
away moisture from your body,
providing you with a comfortable
temperature throughout the
night. It can keep you cool in the
colder nights.
That fantastic feel
One of the main reasons why
these fibres have become so
popular as a mattress filling is of
course how they make you feel.
These natural plant fibres are
able to cater to any preference,
thanks to the fact that they can
be used individually, coupled
together, and interchanged, to
create a sleep surface that perfectly
comforts and supports any
sleeper.
These fibres are some of the
most resilient and best quality fibre
fillings that you can find. Their
responsiveness and breathability
will perfectly compliment any
an incredibly luxurious, medium
“Our commitment to innovation
drives us to continually push the
boundaries of what’s possible
in mattress textiles and sleep
Birleşik Fuar Yapım A.Ş.
Fair was held with the
participation of more
than 300 companies
and manufacturers at
the Istanbul Expo Center
between 25-28 September
2024. This event, which is
Turkey’s only exhibition
on mattress components
important platform where
the latest technology and
innovative products are
exhibited in the sector.
Osman Güler, Chairman
of the Board of Directors
of the IBIA Association,
shared details about the
fair.
Starting his words by stating
that the first two fairs
were very good, Güler
emphasized that they received
visitors from a very wide geographical
region, and that they
hosted over 22,000 visitors
from 91 countries in the first
fair and over 19,000 visitors
from 97 countries in the second
fair, and said, “We worked
a little more for this fair based
on the experiences we have
gained from other years. We
invited mattress manufacturers
to this fair by participating in
almost all sectoral fairs around
the world, taking an active role
in all of them and holding oneto-one
meetings. This year, I
think we will receive close to
25,000 visitors from over 100
countries. We have received
serious feedback by working
with special federations from
different countries such as
America, India, Poland, Brazil
and Russia, the world’s largest
mattress producing countries.
We are personally hosting
almost 2,000 special guests. I
think this is a very good return
for a fair of this scale.”
Güler complained that many
people confuse them with mattress
manufacturers and emphasized
that this fair is not a fair
for mattress manufacturers. The
Chairman of the Board of Directors
of the IBIA Association said,
“In this fair, mattress manufacturers
participate as our customers.
We are companies that supply
technology and materials to
mattress manufacturers in 10 different
branches. We participate
with different textile products
such as machinery, fabric, mattress
fabric, sponge, spring, felt,
fiber, interlining, mattress label,
chemistry and cover. Visitors can
find every material that mattress
manufacturers will use here.”
Güler reminded the target of
30 SleepTech • November - December
increasing the annual exports
from 2.4 billion dollars to 3 billion
dollars, which he stated in the
opening speech of the fair, and
mentioned the contributions of
IBIA Expo on the way to these
targets with the following statements:
“We are growing by
gathering the synergy between
our producers and the initiatives
of our producers at IBIA Expo.
Before we created such an
association and fair organization,
Türkiye was ranked 5th or 6th
among the supplier companies
of mattress manufacturers in the
world. However, after 2 years of
fair organizations, Türkiye has
become the country that supplies
the most technology and components
to mattress manufacturers
after China. Many of our companies
have also become companies
that direct the sector worldwide
in machinery and material
supply.”
Osman Güler, who recently
acquired Mammut, one of the
world’s largest companies with a
152-year history, shared his goals
for the brand. “As IBIA Board of
Directors, we are also the chairman
of the board of directors of
Elektroteks. As Elektroteks, we
make complete bearing production
facilities and we produce almost
75% of the machines used
in these facilities. However, we
were not able to produce a 10%
part. We can produce these, but
we have added this 10% part to
the Elektroteks family by purchasing
a company with a 152-
year history, which is the world
leader in quilting production. We
are planning to move this company
to Türkiye. The company will
continue to work with the same
staff, in the same place and in
the same way. The first thing we
will do is to reorganize the price
policy, which is the reason for
the company’s low sales. But we
aim to do this by reducing costs
without compromising quality. In
this way, everyone will be able
to buy Mammut at affordable
prices. As Elektroteks, our goal is
to make the best machine in the
world and to have the power to
compete even with companies in
China. We will achieve the same
success with the Mammut brand.
Mammut already produces the
world’s best quilting machines.
We will develop these machines
a little more and offer them to the
sector at prices accessible to everyone.”
and stated that they will
bring Mammut back to a vibrant
and much higher level.
Quality mattress manufacturing
relies on carefully
selected components that
deliver comfort, durability, and
health benefits. By prioritizing
high-density foams, individually
wrapped coils, breathable
fabrics, and environmentally
conscious materials, manufacturers
can develop mattresses that
stand the test of time. Reinforced
edge support, non-toxic adhesives,
and temperature-regulating
layers further enhance the
mattress’s value, meeting the
demands of modern consumers.
Each component is essential
to producing a mattress that
provides consistent support and
comfort, aligning with consumer
expectations for quality and
sustainability. As manufacturers
continue to innovate with these
components, they’ll play a crucial
role in setting new standards for
quality and redefining the way
people experience sleep.
In the competitive mattress
market, product quality largely
depends on the components that
go into a mattress. From supportive
coils to breathable foams
and durable fabrics, each element
plays a crucial role in delivering
the comfort, longevity, and
value that consumers expect.
Here’s a closer look at the most
important components in quality
mattress manufacturing and why
they’re essential for achieving an
exceptional sleep experience.
1. High-Density Foams for Comfort
and Support
Foam is one of the most common
components in modern
mattresses, offering both comfort
and support. Quality mattresses
often feature high-density memory
foams, which conform to the
body’s shape to relieve pressure
points and reduce motion transfer.
High-density foams are also
more durable and resist sagging
over time, helping mattresses
maintain their shape and support
structure for years.
Other advanced foam technologies,
such as gel-infused
or copper-infused foams, add
temperature regulation and
antimicrobial properties to the
mattress. Gel-infused foams, for
example, dissipate heat more
efficiently, making the mattress
cooler and more comfortable
for hot sleepers. By selecting
high-quality, durable foams,
manufacturers ensure that their
mattresses offer a stable and
supportive sleep surface that
stands up to regular use.
2. Individually Wrapped Coils for
Targeted Support
For hybrid and innerspring
mattresses, coils provide the
fundamental support structure.
High-quality mattresses often
use individually wrapped (or
pocketed) coils that respond
independently to the sleeper’s
movements. This design mini-
mizes motion transfer, which is
especially important for couples,
as one person’s movements
won’t disturb the other’s sleep.
Additionally, pocketed coils form
targeted support zones, particularly
around the lower back
and hips, which helps maintain
healthy spinal alignment.
The gauge (thickness) and quantity
of coils are also important
quality indicators. Higher-gauge
coils are more flexible, while
lower-gauge coils provide firmer
support. Quality mattresses often
balance coil gauge and count
to offer a mix of firm support
and pressure relief. This level of
detail in coil selection and design
contributes to the overall comfort
and durability of the mattress.
3. Breathable Fabrics for Enhanced
Comfort
The mattress cover material is
often overlooked, but it plays a
significant role in both comfort
and durability. Quality mattresses
typically use breathable, durable
fabrics that promote airflow and
enhance the sleep environment.
Materials like Tencel, organic
cotton, and bamboo are popular
choices due to their moisture-wicking
and hypoallergenic
46 SleepTech • November - December
File
properties. Tencel, in particular,
is known for its eco-friendly
manufacturing process and soft,
cooling texture, making it ideal
for hot sleepers.
Advanced textiles, such as those
with phase-change materials
(PCMs), regulate surface temperature
by absorbing, storing,
and releasing heat. This technology
helps maintain a steady
sleep environment, ensuring that
the mattress cover remains cool
to the touch.
4. Reinforced Edge Support for
Durability
Edge support refers to the reinforcement
along the mattress
File
perimeter. In high-quality mattresses,
manufacturers integrate
thicker foam or coils around the
edges to prevent sagging and
ensure that sleepers can utilize
the full surface without feeling
like they might roll off. Strong
edge support is also a sign of a
mattress’s durability, as it helps
the mattress retain its shape over
time and allows for more comfortable
sitting or lying near the
edge.
Reinforced edges are particularly
beneficial in innerspring and
hybrid mattresses, where coil
systems can be more prone to
compression. By adding this
feature, manufacturers enhance
the mattress’s overall stability,
making it more comfortable and
long-lasting.
5. Natural and Organic Materials
for Health and Sustainability
As consumers become more
conscious of the health and
environmental impacts of their
purchases, the use of natural
and organic materials in mattress
manufacturing has grown. Quality
mattresses often incorporate
organic cotton, wool, and natural
latex, which provide excellent
breathability, hypoallergenic
properties, and sustainability.
Organic cotton and wool, for
instance, are free from harmful
chemicals and pesticides, making
them ideal for allergy sufferers
and eco-conscious buyers.
Natural latex, derived from rubber
tree sap, is both durable and
responsive, providing a buoyant
and supportive sleep surface that
can last for over a decade with
proper care. It’s also resistant
to mold, dust mites, and mildew,
which is a major benefit for
health-conscious sleepers. Using
high-quality natural materials
not only improves the mattress’s
comfort and durability but also
appeals to the growing demand
for environmentally friendly products.
6. Non-Toxic Adhesives and
Flame Retardants for Safety
In mattress manufacturing, adhesives
are used to bond different
layers, and flame retardants are
applied to meet safety regulations.
However, low-quality materials
can release harmful volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) that
contribute to indoor air pollution.
Quality manufacturers prioritize
the use of non-toxic, water-based
adhesives and natural
flame retardants that meet safety
standards without compromising
air quality.
Natural flame-retardant materials,
such as wool, are increasingly
popular, as they’re inherently
flame-resistant and free from
chemical treatments. By investing
in non-toxic, high-quality components,
manufacturers ensure that
their mattresses are both safe
and health-conscious.
7. Temperature Regulation
Layers for Optimal Sleep Environment
Sleep temperature can greatly
impact sleep quality, and modern
consumers are more aware of the
benefits of cooling and temperature-regulating
mattresses. Many
high-quality mattresses now
feature dedicated layers, such
as gel-infused memory foam or
copper-infused latex, to help
dissipate heat. These layers keep
the sleep surface cool by drawing
heat away from the body,
which can be especially beneficial
for those who experience night
sweats or live in warmer climates.
In hybrid mattresses, coils also
aid temperature regulation by
allowing air to circulate through
the mattress. This natural ventilation,
combined with cooling
foams, contributes to a more
comfortable sleep experience,
enhancing the mattress’s appeal
and performance.
Suspension” technology. This
innovative product offers an
unlimited zone logic that eliminates
the need for regional use in
mattresses. This system, which
reacts according to the user’s
body ergonomics, provides a
more comfortable and quality
sleep by protecting the health
of the spine. These mattresses,
which have three different degrees
of firmness, can be shaped
according to the different preferences
of users. Air Suspension
technology is a patented product
of Kangaroo and attracts great
interest especially in the European
market.
Regarding the overall evaluation
of the fair, Bağdatlı stated that
the first two days met their expectations,
but the overlap with
some fairs caused a decline in
participation. His recommendation
for the fair was that the fair
calendar should be reconsidered.
Emphasizing that the exhibition
Emre Yılmaz also expressed
his recommendations for the
organization of the fair. Stating
that he thinks it would be
more efficient to organize the
than every year, Yılmaz said
that it is challenging to present
new products and innovations
every year, and that
R&D processes take a long
time. He said that a biennial
exhibition would attract more
attention and become a more
eagerly awaited event for exhibitors
and visitors.
In addition, Yılmaz stated that
he was satisfied with the work
of IBIA EXPO’s organizational
team and emphasized that the
organization was successful
especially in bringing in foreign
customers and that there was
Nano Yay: We must support
IBIA Expo for the future of the
industry
Nano Spring Company Owner Serkan Kır said that IBIA Expo
has an extremely important place in the Turkish mattress
industry and that this fair should be protected.
Stating that IBIA Expo
plays a unifying role in
the sector through the
IBIA Association, although
similar fairs have been held
before, Serkan Kır said that
thanks to the fairs, Turkish
Giving a message of solidarity
and unity in his interview,
64 SleepTech • November - December
Mr. Serkan Kır stated that “All
companies producing in the
mattress sub-industry should
unite on IBIA by acting jointly,
and for this initiative, which is
beneficial for both the sector
and our country, we need to
be in solidarity, not competition.
We should all take a
hand under the stone on this
issue. This is what will make
our industry compete with the
developed countries of the
world.”
“Digitalization, social media and
artificial intelligence should be
used effectively”
Mr. Serkan also offered advice
to the fair management,
emphasizing the importance
of keeping up with the times
and staying up to date. “I
think that the fair management
and our association should
use social media and artificial
can do this both in the promotional
activities of the fair
increase in the participation
of new companies and faces
in the evaluation they made
as of the fourth day of the fair
showed that the fair was more
successful than in previous
years. Karakaşlar stated that
68 SleepTech • November - December
in previous years, more familiar
companies participated in
the fair, but this year the diversity
of participants increased
and this pleased them.
Karakaşlar’s most important
suggestion regarding the organization
of the fair was that
the fair should be held every
two years instead of every
year. He stated that it is tiring
for companies to prepare new
products every year, and that
constantly encountering the
same faces creates a feeling
of “fatigue”. Giving examples
from fairs abroad, he stated
that it would be more efficient
to organize IBIA EXPO every
two years like Interzum. He
emphasized that he believes
that by holding the fair intermittently,
exhibitors and
buyers will be more excited
and the fair will become more
efficient.
Karakaşlar also stated that
the fair should be promoted
more effectively on social
media. Stating that everyone
is actively using social media
nowadays, Karakaşlar said
that IBIA EXPO’s social media
advertisements are not
enough and that more promotion
would be beneficial.
In conclusion, Eser Karakaşlar
stated that this year’s fair was
and shared his suggestions
for the further development of
Durak Tekstil, one of the
leading manufacturers
of industrial sewing and
embroidery threads, became a
popular destination for visitors
with its innovative threads at
IBIA EXPO 2024, the International
Bedding Industry and
Technologies Fair held at IFM
between 25-28 September.
The company managed to
attract the professionals of the
mattress industry with its Bug
Safe yarn, which stands out
among its latest innovations.
This thread, which prevents
the settlement and reproduction
of insects and pests in
mattress seams, meets high
standards in terms of both
human and environment with
its sustainability feature.
Durak Tekstil Board Member
Durak, who made an evaluation
of the fair, said that they
have been supporting IBIA
EXPO since its first edition because
they see a great benefit
and potential for the sector.
Durak; ‘This fair, which we
see as an important platform
for the mattress sector, was
completed with a result that
met our expectations. Although
we see the reflections
of the problems experienced
in the neighbouring markets
on the number of exhibitors
and visitors, I can state that
as Durak Tekstil, we achieved
our targets at the fair.’
Bug Safe and more yarns create
value for the mattress industry
Durak Bug Safe sewing
thread, which was exhibited
at the Durak Tekstil stand with
a miniature mattress application,
was closely examined by
the visitors during the fair. Bug
Safe, which contains innovations
as a solution for home
textiles and outdoor applications
such as tents, especially
mattresses, eliminates the
problem of insects and pests
in the damp areas formed
in the seams of textiles. The
natural structure of the yarn
prevents insects that are too
small to be seen by the eye
from settling and multiplying
here. Instead of killing these
creatures by poisoning them,
Bug Safe keeps them away
from the sewing areas thanks
to its special odour, thus
offering a safe use. Bug Safe
yarn, which can maintain this
feature for a long time despite
the washing of textiles, contributes
to the creation of safe
and healthy environments for
people without harming the
ecology.
Stating that this yarn can
be used in many important
commercial and private areas,
especially hotels and hospitals,
Yiğit Durak explained that
they have started to receive
serious demand for this new
product in export markets,
especially in the USA. Durak;
the interview he gave at IBIA
Speaking on the 3rd day of
mance of the fair, Mr. Necip
said; “The performance of the
fair is both extremely pleasing
and promising for the future.
We are of course pleased with
where the industry is today,
but we want it to reach better
points in the coming years.
We hope that this show will
be the pioneer of that and the
mattress industry will rise on
The 2024 exhibition went very
well for us and we welcomed
a large number of foreign customers
to our stand, including
many from Europe, Russia
and the Far East, the Middle
East and the American market.
We hope the same performance
will continue in the
coming years.”
“The fair can be made more interesting
for foreign customers”
Mr. Necip also made some
suggestions to the management
regarding the fair and
said, “The promotion of the
fair is very well done and the
design of the area is designed
for the ease of use of the
visitors. However, with some
activities to be organized
Form Sünger: “Issues
such as sustainability and
carbon footprint gain more
importance at fairs”
Volkan Yılmaz, Export
Manager of Form
Sünger, which participated
in IBIA EXPO, 3rd
International Mattress Side Industry
and Technologies Fair,
which was held in Istanbul
between 25-28 September
2024, made a general evaluation
of the fair and shared his
views on the situation of the
sector and the general atmosphere
of the fair. According
to Yılmaz, the performance of
this year’s fair did not show a
great increase compared to
previous years, and there was
even a slight decrease. However,
this may vary depending
on the expectations of the
company. Yılmaz says that
while small-scale companies
82 SleepTech • November - December
can leave such fairs satisfied,
he thinks that for large companies
this year was not very
satisfactory.
Volkan Yılmaz noted that
there were gaps especially
this year as some companies
did not participate in the fair,
which affected the general
atmosphere. However, he
pointed out that government
incentives were a positive
development for the fair. In
addition to the fair becoming
a prestigious event and being
covered by government incentives,
he emphasized that the
fair management’s efforts to
promote the fair abroad and
establish international collaborations
were also important.
According to Yılmaz, part of
the general stagnation in the
sector is due to psychological
and economic factors. The
wars and economic uncertainties
around the world have
affected people’s spending
habits and led them to save
money. However, he says that
with positive economic developments,
the sector may
revive and this will be reflected
in the fairs.
Finally, Yılmaz noted that
issues such as sustainability
and carbon footprint are becoming
increasingly important
at fairs in Europe and America.
He suggested that Turkish
companies should increase
their awareness on these
issues, and made suggestions
such as revising the date of
the fair and shortening the
duration.
shared his expectations and
impressions about the fair
on the second day of IBIA
number of visitors at the fair
was below their expectations,
Ölçer said, “We welcomed
the calmness on the first day
as normal, but we expected a
more intense participation on
the second day. However, the
number of customers we met
was far below our expectations.”
Ölçer emphasized that the
fair should be promoted more
effectively in Turkey. He said
84 SleepTech • November - December
that visitors gave feedback
that digital and other promotional
channels were insufficient.
He also said that in order
to increase participation in
the fair, inviting companies not
only from the mattress industry
but also from the furniture
sub-industry could expand the
customer potential.
Stating that there was a lower
than expected interest in
terms of foreign exhibitors,
Ölçer said that this was an important
deficiency of the fair,
especially since not enough
customers could be attracted
from the American and
European markets. Stating
that digital marketing should
be used more effectively,
Ölçer said, “Social media has
become more important in
modern marketing. The announcement
of the fair should
be made on these channels to
reach a wider audience,” he
added.
He also stated that the constant
announcements and
conference announcements
made during the fair interrupted
customer meetings, making
it difficult to focus during
the meeting, and suggested
that this should be regulated.
In conclusion, Gökhan Ölçer
stated that this year’s fair,
which had low attendance,
could become more productive
in the coming years with
more promotion.
that traditional advertising
also stated that the promotion
of the fair should be done
more intensively on social
Finally, he added that he
reaching business people.
Emphasizing that informing
that it is possible to reach
a wider audience in this way.
similar compared to last
90 SleepTech • November - December
more vitality was observed in
the fairground. Öz added that
he thinks this activity will increase
even more on the third
Regarding the organization
of the fair, Öz said that there
was a change in the booth
layout, but in general, the fair
was balanced in terms of the
number of visitors. Making
suggestions for the coming
years, Öz stated that it would
be more efficient to organize
IBIA EXPO every two years.
He stated that he thinks that
organizing the fair every year
may create difficulties, especially
for exhibitors from
it would be more cost-effective
for exhibitors.
and said that he believes that
it would be more logical to
Fair, which was held in Istanbul
between 25-28 September
2024, stated that this year’s fair
was more productive compared
to last year. Elitaş said that the
first fair was very successful with
a “boom” after the pandemic, but
last year was unproductive. This
year, he said, exhibitors received
more positive feedback and were
generally satisfied with the fair. Elitaş
emphasized that efforts should
be continued to achieve better
results in the coming years.
Serkan Elitaş made suggestions
for the management of the fair and
stated that the biggest problem
was the layout of the fair and the
last minute location changes. He
said that exhibitors were experiencing
difficulties due to their
dissatisfaction with the layout.
Elitaş stated that a more balanced
distribution should be made as
a solution to this issue and cited
the ISPA fair as an example. He
expressed his opinion that each
company should be spread over
a wider area, rather than having
separate placements in various
sections of the fair according to
categories such as machine manufacturers,
fabric manufacturers,
etc. In this way, he said, visitors
would be able to visit the entire fair
easily and any dissatisfaction with
the layout would be eliminated.
Elitaş said that he was also in favor
of the proposal to hold the fair
every two years instead of every
year, but that this decision was
in the hands of the fair organizers.
He said that similar problems
were being experienced in other
sectors and that it was difficult for
exhibitors to offer innovative products
every year. He emphasized
that large budgets are involved,
especially for machinery manufacturers,
and therefore it is difficult to
achieve the same level of participation
every year. Elitaş added that
he thinks fairs organized at a wider
interval would be more efficient
and economical for exhibitors.
In conclusion, Serkan Elitaş stated
that they were satisfied with the
overall fair, but that improvements
in the layout and frequency of the
fair would be beneficial.
he said and thanked the organizing
Regarding the recommendations
for the fair management,
Akıncı emphasized
that it is important to use the
print and visual media more
actively. Stating that social
media platforms, especially
and YouTube, should be used
more effectively today, Akıncı
emphasized that the fair can
reach a wider audience in this
way. “Print media is no longer
to be, social media should be
emphasized,” he said, adding
Although there was a decrease
in the overall number
of exhibitors, he stated that
meeting new companies and
establishing different collaborations
was a great gain for
them.
Aslan made some suggestions
for the organization
of the fair. Regarding stand
placements, he recommended
maintaining the order of the
first two years. In these years,
stand positions were fixed
and organized, whereas this
year there were more irregular
placements and some rules
were bypassed. Aslan noted
that different booth arrangements
can lead to confusion
and navigation problems for
visitors.
He also offered a solution for
the vacant spaces. Aslan emphasized
that the areas where
exhibitors have withdrawn or
canceled should not be filled
only with seating groups, but
instead it is important to make
the fairground look full by
placing creative billboards or
show designs. He added that
empty spaces have a negative
impact on the overall atmosphere
of the organization and
that a solution must be found.
Stating that he was satisfied
with the general atmosphere
of the fair, Aslan expressed his
belief that IBIA EXPO could
a more organized layout and
more effective use of space.
dynamic factors, including:
1. Expanding Home & Interiors
Market: Expected to hit USD
48.1 billion by 2028, with home
furnishings and home improvement
leading the way.
2. Rising Disposable Income: India’s
GDP per capita has doubled
since 2010, increasing consumer
spending on higher-quality
products.
3. Real Estate Boom: A 20% rise
in metro city project launches in
2023 has increased demand for
mattresses.
4. Shorter Replacement Cycle:
The average mattress replacement
cycle has decreased from
10 years in 2010 to 7.7 years in
2022, boosting repeat purchases.
The latest
technologies
in mattress
manufacturing:
enhancing comfort,
health, and sustainability
The mattress industry has
evolved significantly over
the past decade, with
cutting-edge technologies
transforming how mattresses
are designed, manufactured,
and delivered to consumers.
These advancements are not
only raising the bar for comfort
and durability but also meeting
new consumer expectations
for health benefits, eco-friendliness,
and convenience. Here’s
a look at the latest technological
trends redefining mattress
manufacturing.
1. Smart Mattresses and Sensor
Technology
Smart technology has entered
the mattress industry in
full force, developing “smart
mattresses” that use sensors
to monitor and optimize sleep.
These advanced mattresses
are equipped with embedded
sensors that track heart rate,
breathing, body temperature,
and movement. The data
collected helps analyze sleep
quality, and some smart mattresses
can even adjust their
firmness levels in response to
a user’s changing positions.
Brands are increasingly incorporating
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
connectivity to allow users to
monitor their sleep patterns via
mobile apps, offering personalized
sleep insights and recommendations.
Another fascinating development
is temperature regulation.
Many smart mattresses now
incorporate active temperature
control features to keep users
cool in summer and warm in
winter, ensuring a stable sleep
environment throughout the
year. These innovations cater
to consumers seeking ways
to improve their sleep quality,
making mattress purchases a
long-term investment in health
and well-being.
2. Cooling and Heating Technology
Temperature control remains
one of the most in-demand
features in mattresses today.
Advanced cooling technologies
are being integrated into
mattress designs to address
issues like night sweats and
overheating, two common
disruptions to sleep. For example,
phase-change materials
(PCMs), originally developed
by NASA, are increasingly
used in high-end mattresses
to absorb, store, and release
heat. This makes a consistently
cool surface that adjusts to
body temperature fluctuations
throughout the night.
Some mattresses go even
further with dual-zone cooling
and heating capabilities, allowing
couples to control their
side of the bed independently.
These innovations in thermal
control provide customized
comfort and are especially
popular among those sensitive
to temperature changes.
3. Sustainable Materials and
Eco-Friendly Manufacturing
With sustainability being a
top priority, mattress manufacturers
are shifting toward
eco-friendly production methods
and materials. The use of
organic cotton, natural latex,
and renewable bamboo is on
the rise, offering consumers a
more sustainable and hypoallergenic
alternative to traditional
mattress materials. Additionally,
plant-based foams made
from renewable resources,
such as soy or castor oil, are
being incorporated to reduce
dependency on petrochemi-
Behind every cozy bed, there lies
an intricate world of mattress
manufacturing machines that have
evolved over time to cater to the diverse
needs and preferences of consumers.
106 SleepTech • November - December
cals.
Manufacturers are also adopting
greener production practices,
including reduced water
and energy use, low-emission
processes, and recycling
initiatives to repurpose old
mattresses. Consumers are
increasingly drawn to brands
that prioritize sustainability,
which is driving innovation
across the industry.
4. 3D Printing and Customization
The adoption of 3D printing in
mattress manufacturing has
opened new avenues for customization.
This technology allows
manufacturers to produce
unique mattress structures
that support different parts of
the body according to individual
needs. By printing various
layers with different densities,
manufacturers can develop a
mattress that conforms precisely
to the user’s shape,
providing enhanced comfort
and support.
3D printing also enables rapid
File
prototyping, which speeds up
the development process and
allows companies to test and
refine mattress designs more
efficiently. This technological
leap is helping manufacturers
bring innovative products to
market faster than ever.
5. Roll-Packed and Bed-in-a-Box
Technology
Mattress delivery has undergone
a revolution with
roll-packing and “bed-in-abox”
technology, making it
easier than ever for consumers
to buy mattresses online and
have them delivered directly
to their doors. Through advanced
compression and
vacuum-sealing techniques,
manufacturers can compress
a mattress into a compact
box without compromising
its structural integrity. Once
unboxed, these mattresses
expand to their full size and
shape within hours.
The bed-in-a-box trend has
transformed the market by
simplifying logistics, reducing
shipping costs, and offering
consumers greater convenience.
It has also spurred
e-commerce growth within
the industry, as customers
can now try out high-quality
mattresses in the comfort of
their homes with extended trial
periods.
6. AI and Data-Driven Design
Artificial intelligence (AI) and
data analytics are becoming
powerful tools in mattress
design and manufacturing.
Using AI, companies can
analyze data on consumer
sleep patterns, preferences,
and feedback to tailor their
products to market demands
more effectively. This approach
allows manufacturers to predict
emerging trends, improve
mattress durability, and enhance
comfort features based
on real consumer data.
Some companies use AI
algorithms to match customers
with mattresses based
on their body type, preferred
108 SleepTech • November - December
sleep position, and specific
health needs. This personalized
approach not only helps
in customer satisfaction but
also in reducing return rates,
as customers are more likely to
find a mattress that suits them
perfectly.
Conclusion
The mattress manufacturing
industry is embracing these
technological advancements to
cater to a more informed and
discerning consumer base.
From smart sensors and temperature
control to sustainable
materials and AI-driven customization,
Sleeping soundly on
tempered springs
If you slept like a dream on your mattress last night, it may in part be due
to the heat treatment of the springs in your mattress. Mattress springs are
tempered during their manufacturing process. For this month’s blog we
will start by discussing the history of the mattress and how it developed
into using springs for comfort. Then we will talk about why springs are
tempered and how the tempering process effects the steel.
Sleeping on the cold, hard ground
has always been terribly uncomfortable.
People began sleeping
on primitive beds about 10,000 years
ago, during the Neolithic period. The
word “mattress” comes from the
medieval Arabic al-matrah, which
means “large cushion or rug for lying
on.” Until the 1800s, people made
their beds from natural materials, such
as straw, feathers and horsehair. While
fluffy, these fillers tended to clump
together to make for a lumpy bed.
The natural fillers would break down
quickly, resulting in uncomfortable pits
of mushy material. The fillers were also
attractive to bugs and other unwanted
bedmates.
The industrial revolution forever
changed the way people slept through
the introduction of coil springs. First
patented for use in chair seats, steel
coil springs soon found their way into
mattresses. The first coil spring for
bedding earned a patent in 1865. It
did not take long for mattress manufacturers
to realize that placing a set of
uniform springs inside layers of cushiony
upholstery created a comfortable
bed with a firm, resilient, and uniform
texture. Bedsprings provide the right
balance of support and “give” to create
a comfortable night’s sleep. In the
blink of an eye, the dream of sleeping
on the perfect mattress became a
reality.
Tempered Springs for a Good
Night’s Sleep
There is more to making a comfortable
bed than simply wrapping upholstery
around any old set of springs, though.
The springs and other materials
must undergo certain manufacturing
processes to improve their quality.
For example, manufacturers may add
flame-retardant chemicals to mattress
upholstery and filling. They must also
temper the springs to enhance the
quality of the metal in the spring.
The steel used in mattress springs is
quite hard, especially after undergoing
hardening processes of heating and
quenching during manufacturing. While
hardened steel is strong, it is also quite
brittle. Internal strains caused by sudden
cooling in the quenching bath can
compromise the integrity of the steel.
Tempering reduces the brittleness in
the hardened steel of mattress springs,
and removes internal strains associated
with the quenching bath.
Tempering is a manufacturing process
that involves heating steel to a
certain temperature and then cooling
it to improve toughness and decrease
brittleness by reducing the hardness
of the steel. The exact temperature
achieved during the heating process
determines the amount of hardness
removed. Manufacturers will temper
very hard tools at low temperatures.
They temper springs, like those used
in mattresses, at roughly 450F (232C).
The tempering process gives mattress
springs the flex that you feel when you
lay down and the durability to withstand
years of sleep filled nights.
