The rise of natural plant 

fibres being used in 

mattresses 

It’s safe to say that over the last few years the popularity of Natural 

Fibre mattresses has only continued to grow. In particular, 

mattresses that use Natural Plant Fibres are on the rise, with many 

sleepers opting for them instead of animal fibres. 

But what exactly has

IBIA EXPO 2024 

IBIA Expo 3. Mattress Supply Industry and Technologies, 

which attracts great attention in the world with its 

international nature, was held at Istanbul Expo Centre 

between 225-28 September. 

IBIA EXPO 2024, the International 

Bedding Industry and 

Technologies Fair, was held 

at the Istanbul Expo Centre 

between 25-28 September. This 

event, which was organised 

for the third time, attracted the 

attention of both domestic and 

international industry representatives 

as Eurasia’s largest 

mattress industry meeting. IBIA 

EXPO 2024, which strengthened 

Turkey’s leading position 

in the mattress sub-industry and 

technologies, was held with the 

participation of 130 companies, 

26 of which were foreign companies. 

A total of 22,494 people 

from 102 countries attended the 

fair; 15,652 domestic and 6,842

Organised for the third time this year on an international 

scale and hosting 22,494 buyers from 

102 countries, IBIA EXPO International Mattress 

Supply Industry and Technologies Fair is the largest 

fair in Eurasia and the 2nd largest fair in the 

world in its sector, where the latest technologies 

and innovative products are exhibited, and it is 

the only fair in our country on mattress components 

and technologies.

the fair, where bilateral meetings, 

which paved the way for new 

collaborations in the sector, were

Growing Impact of Turkish Mattress 

Industry 

Turkey, which has an export 

volume of 2 billion dollars in the 

mattress industry, is increasing its 

effectiveness in the global market 

thanks to IBIA EXPO. Stating that 

by 2024, Turkey has become a 

regional centre in the mattress 

sub-industry and technologies, 


the authorities state that our 

country ranks second in the 

world in terms of mattress components. 

Thanks to this platform 

offered by the fair, innovative and 

high quality products produced in 

our country reach the world markets 

more effectively, reinforcing 

Turkey’s strength in international 

competition.

IBIA President Guler: 

We aim to increase 

our exports from 

2.4 billion dollars 

to 3 billion dollars

(BİFAŞ), IBIA Expo - 

Mattress Supply Industry 

and Technologies 

Fair was held with the 

participation of more 

than 300 companies 

and manufacturers at 

the Istanbul Expo Center 

between 25-28 September 

2024. This event, which is 

Turkey’s only exhibition 

on mattress components 

and technologies, is an 

important platform where 

the latest technology and 

innovative products are 

exhibited in the sector. 

Osman Güler, Chairman 

of the Board of Directors 

of the IBIA Association, 

shared details about the 

fair. 

Starting his words by stating 

that the first two fairs 

were very good, Güler 

emphasized that they received 

visitors from a very wide geographical 

region, and that they 

hosted over 22,000 visitors 

from 91 countries in the first 

fair and over 19,000 visitors 

from 97 countries in the second 

fair, and said, “We worked 

a little more for this fair based 

on the experiences we have 

gained from other years. We 

invited mattress manufacturers 

to this fair by participating in 

almost all sectoral fairs around 

the world, taking an active role 

in all of them and holding oneto-one 

meetings. This year, I 

think we will receive close to 

25,000 visitors from over 100 

countries. We have received 

serious feedback by working 

with special federations from 

different countries such as 

America, India, Poland, Brazil 

and Russia, the world’s largest 

mattress producing countries. 

We are personally hosting 

almost 2,000 special guests. I 

think this is a very good return 

for a fair of this scale.” 

Güler complained that many 

people confuse them with mattress 

manufacturers and emphasized 

that this fair is not a fair 

for mattress manufacturers. The 

Chairman of the Board of Directors 

of the IBIA Association said, 

“In this fair, mattress manufacturers 

participate as our customers. 

We are companies that supply 

technology and materials to 

mattress manufacturers in 10 different 

branches. We participate 

with different textile products 

such as machinery, fabric, mattress 

fabric, sponge, spring, felt, 

fiber, interlining, mattress label, 

chemistry and cover. Visitors can 

find every material that mattress 

manufacturers will use here.” 

Güler reminded the target of 


increasing the annual exports 

from 2.4 billion dollars to 3 billion 

dollars, which he stated in the 

opening speech of the fair, and 

mentioned the contributions of 

IBIA Expo on the way to these 

targets with the following statements: 

“We are growing by 

gathering the synergy between 

our producers and the initiatives 

of our producers at IBIA Expo. 

Before we created such an 

association and fair organization, 

Türkiye was ranked 5th or 6th 

among the supplier companies 

of mattress manufacturers in the 

world. However, after 2 years of 

fair organizations, Türkiye has 

become the country that supplies 

the most technology and components 

to mattress manufacturers 

after China. Many of our companies 

have also become companies 

that direct the sector worldwide 

in machinery and material 

supply.” 

Osman Güler, who recently 

acquired Mammut, one of the 

world’s largest companies with a 

152-year history, shared his goals 

for the brand. “As IBIA Board of 

Directors, we are also the chairman 

of the board of directors of 

Elektroteks. As Elektroteks, we 

make complete bearing production 

facilities and we produce almost 

75% of the machines used 

in these facilities. However, we 

were not able to produce a 10% 

part. We can produce these, but 

we have added this 10% part to 

the Elektroteks family by purchasing 

a company with a 152- 

year history, which is the world 

leader in quilting production. We 

are planning to move this company 

to Türkiye. The company will 

continue to work with the same 

staff, in the same place and in 

the same way. The first thing we 

will do is to reorganize the price 

policy, which is the reason for 

the company’s low sales. But we 

aim to do this by reducing costs 

without compromising quality. In 

this way, everyone will be able 

to buy Mammut at affordable 

prices. As Elektroteks, our goal is 

to make the best machine in the 

world and to have the power to 

compete even with companies in 

China. We will achieve the same 

success with the Mammut brand. 

Mammut already produces the 

world’s best quilting machines. 

We will develop these machines 

a little more and offer them to the 

sector at prices accessible to everyone.”

Manager of Bedcovers, 

which participated in 

IBIA EXPO, 3rd International 

Mattress Side Industry and 

Technologies Fair, which was 

held in Istanbul between 25- 

28 September 2024, shared 

her evaluations about the fair. 

Ms. Duygu stated that the fair 

was organized for the third 

time and stated that the event 

has been good so far. Emphasizing 

that they have made 

much better progress compared 

to last year, Günaydın 

said that the potential of new 

customers and the diversity 

of the countries that came 

satisfied them. 

Stating that they met new 

faces from countries such as 

America, Austria and New 

Zealand, Duygu Günaydın 


added that they realized that 

the Russian market is also 

quite active. Expressing that 

it was pleasant for them to 

meet new people, Günaydın 

emphasized the importance of 

the feedback they will receive 

in the following days of the 

fair. 

Ms. Duygu also made suggestions 

for the management 

of the fair and stated that she 

thought that organizing the 

event every two years would 

attract more interest. She also 

requested that the ventilation 

be improved in order to prevent 

post-fair illnesses. Emphasizing 

the importance of 

using social media and technology 

more actively, Günaydın 

stated that these tools 

should be well utilized for 

companies to make more effective

According to Yılmaz, part of 

the general stagnation in the 

sector is due to psychological 

and economic factors. The 

wars and economic uncertainties 

around the world have 

affected people’s spending 

habits and led them to save 

money. However, he says that 

with positive economic developments, 

the sector may 

revive and this will be reflected 

in the fairs. 

Finally, Yılmaz noted that 

issues such as sustainability 

and carbon footprint are becoming 

increasingly important 

at fairs in Europe and America. 

He suggested that Turkish 

companies should increase 

their awareness on these 

issues, and made suggestions 

such as revising the date of 

the fair and shortening the

the meeting, and suggested 

that this should be regulated.

of the proposal to hold the fair 

every two years instead of every 

year, but that this decision was 

in the hands of the fair organizers.

that large budgets are involved,

Sleeping soundly on 

tempered springs 

If you slept like a dream on your mattress last night, it may in part be due 

to the heat treatment of the springs in your mattress. Mattress springs are 

tempered during their manufacturing process. For this month’s blog we 

will start by discussing the history of the mattress and how it developed 

into using springs for comfort. Then we will talk about why springs are 

tempered and how the tempering process effects the steel. 

Sleeping on the cold, hard ground 

has always been terribly uncomfortable. 

People began sleeping 

on primitive beds about 10,000 years 

ago, during the Neolithic period. The 

word “mattress” comes from the 

medieval Arabic al-matrah, which 

means “large cushion or rug for lying 

on.” Until the 1800s, people made 

their beds from natural materials, such 

as straw, feathers and horsehair. While 

fluffy, these fillers tended to clump 

together to make for a lumpy bed. 

The natural fillers would break down 

quickly, resulting in uncomfortable pits 

of mushy material. The fillers were also 

attractive to bugs and other unwanted 

bedmates. 

The industrial revolution forever 

changed the way people slept through 

the introduction of coil springs. First 

patented for use in chair seats, steel 

coil springs soon found their way into 

mattresses. The first coil spring for 

bedding earned a patent in 1865. It 

did not take long for mattress manufacturers 

to realize that placing a set of 

uniform springs inside layers of cushiony 

upholstery created a comfortable 

bed with a firm, resilient, and uniform 

texture. Bedsprings provide the right 

balance of support and “give” to create 

a comfortable night’s sleep. In the 

blink of an eye, the dream of sleeping 

on the perfect mattress became a 

reality. 

Tempered Springs for a Good 

Night’s Sleep 

There is more to making a comfortable 

bed than simply wrapping upholstery 

around any old set of springs, though. 

The springs and other materials 

must undergo certain manufacturing 

processes to improve their quality. 

For example, manufacturers may add 

flame-retardant chemicals to mattress 

upholstery and filling. They must also 

temper the springs to enhance the 

quality of the metal in the spring. 

The steel used in mattress springs is 

quite hard, especially after undergoing 

hardening processes of heating and 

quenching during manufacturing. While 

hardened steel is strong, it is also quite 

brittle. Internal strains caused by sudden 

cooling in the quenching bath can 

compromise the integrity of the steel. 

Tempering reduces the brittleness in 

the hardened steel of mattress springs, 

and removes internal strains associated 

with the quenching bath. 

Tempering is a manufacturing process 

that involves heating steel to a 

certain temperature and then cooling 

it to improve toughness and decrease 

brittleness by reducing the hardness 

of the steel. The exact temperature 

achieved during the heating process 

determines the amount of hardness 

removed. Manufacturers will temper 

very hard tools at low temperatures. 

They temper springs, like those used 

in mattresses, at roughly 450F (232C). 

The tempering process gives mattress 

springs the flex that you feel when you 

lay down and the durability to withstand 

years of sleep filled nights.
