Who is this programme for?
You might be a lighting specialist
who wants to develop and
expand your practice in designing
with light or a non-specialist
such as a director, designer,
choreographer, dancer,
musician or artist who wants
to enhance your knowledge.
What are the programme
highlights?
There are a series of workshops
that you will be involved in,
led by world-leading lighting
designers (for example, workshops
were led in 2022-23 by
Paule Constable, Michael Hulls,
Lucy Carter and Andi Watson).
Opportunities to travel abroad
during the programme are
available, at no additional cost
to you. Previous locations have
included Lyon (to one of the
biggest lighting festivals in the
world); Berlin (theatre trip);
Prague (work with a set design
academy).
You will benefit from outstanding
networking opportunities
throughout the course both
with your fellow students and
industry. The National Theatre,
Royal Opera House, ER Productions,
and White Light are some
of the top names with which
previous students have recently
collaborated.
OVERVIEW
This industry-focused, intensive
course covers every aspect of
lighting design and teaches you
to use light confidently in a
range of settings. It offers both
specialists and non-specialists a
clear career pathway as a lighting
designer in both the commercial
and independent sectors.

OVERVIEW
The MFA Contemporary Directing
Practice is a two-year vocational
programme. It provides you with
director training and an advanced
practice-based course alongside
rigorous academic study at the
postgraduate level to underpin and
develop your work as a director for
stage and screen.
After completing the four taught
MFA first-year modules alongside
the MA cohort, the second year
offers you an opportunity to deepen
and widen your professional theatre
experience and practice, as well as
have an in-depth introduction to
film work.
Who is this programme for?
This programme will serve as
a bridge to working in creative
industries for aspiring theatremakers.
You will be looking to
develop and deepen your understanding
of the director’s craft
both in live and recorded media.
What are the programme
highlights?
Following the first year of a fully
taught advanced and rigorous
vocational MFA theatre director
training alongside the MA
cohort, the second year offers
you further practical learning
opportunities.
Professional placement and
a chance to experience
professional theatre in action,
observing, assisting, exploring
and widening your professional
horizons.
A unique opportunity to have
a three-month Introduction
to Film: learning to write and
direct for the screen.
Throughout the two-year MFA
CDP Programme, you are always
supported by continuous assessment
and regular tutorials with
the Programme Director, and
feedback from visiting tutors.
