Night Reading<br />

The Night Reading series began in November <strong>2024</strong>, about two months after<br />

Holly’s passing. Following her departure, I started organizing the things she<br />

left behind. In addition to her photographic and textual works, there were<br />

also a large number of personal diaries, creative notes, and travel journals.<br />

Naturally, these included many of the letters we had exchanged as well.<br />

I usually go through these materials at night, after dinner or before bed.<br />

Night Reading could be described as reflections on these remnants—<br />

fragments of memory, a kind of conversation, sometimes even a whisper,<br />

between us. This dialogue will continue over a long period of time and<br />

serves as a way for me to hold her in remembrance. While its form will<br />

remain consistent, the imagery will diverge, branching out into different<br />

directions as the years pass.<br />

For the first entry of Night Reading, I chose her diary entry from Friday,<br />

August 23—the last one she wrote, 20 days before her passing:<br />

“Book delivered today. Ka-sing made a portrait.”<br />

The “book” refers to Sushi Grass in Paradise, a set of sixteen books shipped<br />

from Taiwan by Ching Ping. The “portrait” is the photograph I took of all the<br />

books arranged on the table in our sitting area.<br />

Holly and I shared fifty years together; we understood each other as if<br />

seeing clearly into a mirror. Looking at these diaries transports me instantly<br />

back to moments long past, even revealing depths I hadn’t noticed at the<br />

time. And so, I find myself adrift, overwhelmed by a profound sense of loss.<br />

「 夜 讀 記 」 系 列 開 始 於 <strong>2024</strong> 年 11 月 間 , 楚 喬 離 去 後 大 約 兩 個 月 的 光<br />

景 。 楚 喬 離 去 後 , 我 開 始 整 理 她 留 下 的 東 西 , 除 了 攝 影 及 文 本 作 品<br />

外 , 她 也 留 下 了 大 量 私 人 日 記 , 創 作 筆 記 , 也 有 些 旅 行 日 誌 。 當 然 ,<br />

也 包 括 了 我 們 兩 人 之 間 的 不 少 通 信 。 我 翻 閱 這 些 原 始 材 料 , 通 常 都 在<br />

晚 間 , 飯 後 , 或 睡 前 進 行 。「 夜 讀 記 」 也 可 說 是 關 於 這 些 遺 留 下 來 的<br />

東 西 , 記 憶 點 滴 , 我 們 之 間 的 一 種 傾 談 , 甚 至 私 語 。 這 個 對 談 , 將 會<br />

像 。) 其 中 書 冊 所 指 , 乃 是 清 平 在 台 灣 製 作 , 印 刷 完 成 品 的 「 壽 司 草 邊<br />

的 天 堂 」 共 16 冊 。 肖 像 也 就 是 我 把 眾 書 本 放 在 一 起 , 所 拍 攝 的 照 片 。<br />

我 與 楚 喬 , 相 處 五 十 年 , 大 家 與 對 方 也 算 是 清 晰 可 見 。 看 著 這 些 日 記<br />

本 子 , 它 又 一 下 子 把 你 安 放 回 到 已 經 逝 去 的 光 景 , 甚 至 , 你 看 到 你 當<br />

時 也 沒 有 看 到 的 深 處 。 你 就 茫 茫 然 , 更 加 覺 得 若 有 所 失 。<br />

In 2013, we published a periodical called VPUBLIC ( 萬 象 國 ), each issue measuring<br />

13 x 19 inches and printed on a single sheet of paper, resembling a small poster. It was<br />

meticulously produced with inkjet printing to create an alternative collectible edition.<br />

The issue shown here features work by Patrick Lee, who was holding an exhibition at<br />

our gallery at the time. VPUBLIC primarily showcased works by Holly and me, but it<br />

also included pieces by other artists exhibiting at our gallery, such as Tomio Nitto and<br />

Fiona Smyth.<br />

A selection from my MOBILE POETRY LAB series was published in this poster-zine,<br />

with some issues displayed in my solo show at Z Gallery in Hong Kong. VPUBLIC ran<br />

for just over ten issues, with a very limited print run.<br />

2013 年 間 我 們 出 版 過 一 份 刊 物 「 萬 象 國 」(VPUBLIC),13 乘 19 吋 , 每 期 一 張<br />

紙 , 猶 如 一 張 小 幅 的 海 報 , 以 噴 墨 精 緻 打 印 , 目 的 是 建 立 一 種 另 類 的 收 藏 本 。<br />

這 裡 刊 出 的 其 中 一 期 , 是 李 志 芳 作 品 , 當 時 他 在 我 們 的 畫 廊 正 著 舉 行 著 一 個 展<br />

覽 。 這 個 刊 的 出 版 物 , 其 實 是 主 要 是 刊 載 我 和 楚 喬 的 作 品 , 同 時 , 也 相 關 地 ,<br />

發 刊 了 一 些 當 時 正 在 我 們 畫 廊 展 出 的 其 他 藝 術 家 。 包 括 : Tomio Nitto, Fiona<br />

Smyth 等 。 在 「 萬 象 國 」 也 曾 有 系 統 地 刊 載 過 我 的 「 游 動 詩 寫 室 」 系 列 , 部 份<br />

曾 經 在 香 港 「 私 畫 廊 」, 我 的 個 展 期 間 展 出 過 。「 萬 象 國 」 只 是 出 版 十 多 期 ,<br />

Tomio Nitto is an illustrator based in Toronto. He also creates personal artwork; last<br />

year (2023), we exhibited a series of more than 30 of his oil paintings. We’re good<br />

friends, and he is one of the happiest and most optimistic people we’ve met in Toronto.<br />

His name, when written in kanji, translates to “sun 日 ,” “pagoda 塔 ,” “wealth 富 ,”<br />

and “man 夫 .” Over ten years ago, I created a piece based on these kanji characters<br />

of his name. It consists of four images mounted on four small wooden blocks, and it’s<br />

also part of my Mobile Poetry Lab series. I gifted the piece to him as a keepsake. Every<br />

time I visit his home, I see those four small photo works displayed on his desk. I think<br />

he must be quite fond of that piece.<br />

In a 2013 issue of VPUBLIC 萬 象 國 , I published this work, though what was featured<br />

was only the original images, not a photo documentation of the finished piece. I also<br />

published a four-line poem at the same time, which was a translation inspired by those<br />

four images and, naturally, infused with my subjective feelings and impressions of<br />

Tomio.<br />

Tomio Nitto, 居 多 倫 多 的 插 圖 家 。 他 也 做 個 人 創 作 , 去 年 (2023) 我 們 展 出 過<br />

他 一 組 共 30 多 張 的 油 畫 。 我 們 是 好 友 , 他 也 是 我 們 在 多 倫 多 遇 上 最 快 樂 , 和 最<br />

樂 觀 的 人 。 他 的 名 字 如 果 用 漢 字 的 寫 法 : 日 sun 塔 pagoda 富 wealth 夫 man。 十 多 年<br />

前 我 用 他 的 漢 字 名 字 做 了 一 個 作 品 , 四 個 圖 本 , 分 別 裱 貼 在 四 個 小 塊 木 件 上 。<br />

也 算 是 我 的 游 動 詩 寫 室 系 列 中 的 一 件 作 品 。 是 個 作 品 我 送 予 他 自 藏 。 每 次 我 造<br />

訪 他 家 , 都 看 見 該 四 個 小 圖 木 本 , 立 放 於 他 的 案 頭 。 大 扺 他 也 是 很 喜 歡 該 件 作<br />

品 吧 。 在 2013 年 的 一 期 「 萬 象 國 」, 我 發 刊 了 這 件 作 品 , 不 過 所 發 刊 的 只 是<br />

圖 像 原 稿 , 而 不 是 完 成 物 的 照 片 記 錄 。 我 又 同 時 發 刊 了 一 首 四 行 詩 , 是 從 該<br />

四 個 圖 象 所 衍 生 出 來 的 譯 本 , 當 然 , 文 本 也 套 入 了 我 對 Tomio 的 主 觀 感 覺 和 印<br />

象 。<br />

In 2013, Holly collaborated with Fiona Smyth on a dual exhibition exploring the<br />

theme of Shan Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas). The publication VPUBLIC<br />

released two issues (20130309/ 20130312), each featuring works by both artists.<br />

Holly’s Shan Hai Jing series comprises 25 photographs taken over time. Eight of these<br />

were exhibited in the aforementioned show, displayed on tabletops. The photographs<br />

were presented upright, allowing viewers to observe them from both sides. Each pair<br />

of identical photographs, measuring 21.5 x 8 inches horizontally, was mounted backto-back,<br />

pressed on both sides by two pieces of thick glass. The base was crafted from<br />

oak and aluminum.<br />

2013 年 , 楚 喬 與 Fiona Smyth 共 同 做 了 一 個 雙 人 展 , 探 討 「 山 海 經 」 的 主 題 。<br />

「 萬 象 國 」 出 版 了 兩 期 (20130309/ 20130312), 分 別 刊 載 兩 人 的 作 品 。 楚 喬 的<br />

「 山 海 經 」 系 列 , 前 後 拍 攝 了 共 25 張 照 片 , 在 上 面 提 到 的 展 覽 , 展 出 了 八 張 ,<br />

都 是 座 枱 式 擺 放 。 照 片 直 立 展 示 , 可 前 後 觀 看 。 兩 張 相 同 的 照 片 , 各 21.5 乘 8<br />

吋 橫 度 , 背 靠 背 , 前 後 均 有 一 枚 厚 手 玻 璃 壓 著 , 底 座 以 橡 木 及 鋁 片 構 成 。

Gary Michael Dault lives in Canada and is noted for<br />

his art critics and writings. He paints and writes poetry<br />

extensively. In 2022, OCEAN POUNDS published two<br />

of his art notebooks in facsimile editions.<br />

Kai Chan immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in<br />

the sixties. He’s a notable multi-disciplinary artist who<br />

has exhibited widely in Canada and abroad.<br />

Ken Lee is a poet and an architectural designer based<br />

Lee Ka-sing, founder of OCEAN POUNDS, lives in<br />

Toronto. He writes with images, recent work mostly<br />

photographs in sequence, some of them were presented<br />

in the format of a book.<br />

Robert Black, born in California, is an award-winning<br />

poet and photographer currently based in Toronto.<br />

His work often deals with themes related to language,<br />

transformation, and disappearance.<br />

Shelley Savor lives in Toronto. She paints and draws<br />

with passion, focusing her theme on city life and urban<br />

living experiences.<br />

Tamara Chatterjee is a Toronto photographer who<br />

travels extensively to many parts of the world.<br />

Tomio Nitto is a noted illustrator lives in Toronto. The<br />

sketchbook is the camera, he said.<br />

Yam Lau, born in British Hong Kong, is an artist and<br />

writer based in Toronto; he is currently an Associate<br />

Professor at York University. Lau’s creative work<br />

explores new expressions and qualities of space,<br />

time and the image. He is represented by Christie<br />

Contemporary.
