BIOGRAPHY
I am deeply respectful of the mind
that has produced this book.
LEONARD COHEN,
EMAIL TO THE AUTHOR
Christophe Lebold unveils Leonard Cohen’s enigmatic journey exploring love, faith and
existentialism. Through meticulous research and personal encounters, Lebold transcends
biography, delving into Cohen’s mission to illuminate life’s shadows. This book captivates
and inspires, inviting readers into life’s complexities and darkest corners. Leonard Cohen
has aimed high: to be all Jewish heroes at once. Like Jacob, he struggled with angels.
Like David, he sang psalms and seduced women. Like Abraham, he moved from place to
place and remained a stranger everywhere. But he never ceased doing what he did best:
stepping into avalanches and reviving our hearts. From Montreal and New York to the
Greek island of Hydra this book follows the singer’s cosmopolitan life and examines his
perpetual dialogues with God, with himself, and with hotel rooms.
A book to get lost in.
CHRISTOPHE LEBOLD, an expert in
American literature, holds a position as
an associate professor at the University
of Strasbourg, France. His doctoral
research focused on the works of
Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. With a
deep admiration for Leonard Cohen, he
has extensively journeyed in the
footsteps of the poet. Alongside his
academic pursuits, he is a theatre actor and practitioner of Zen,
finding joy in poets, cats and, when feeling cheerful,
The best book about Leonard Cohen.
JEAN-LUC PORQUET, Le Canard enchaîné
An extraordinary piece of work, at every level ... It’s the biographical
denouement that Leonard deserves.
MICHAEL POSNER, author of Leonard Cohen, Untold Stories: The Early Years
The first edition of my book was published in French in late 2013 to good
reviews and few readers.
Then came 2014, Leonard tells me that if we must meet, it should be soon.
He tells me why. A few months later, I am on a plane to Los Angeles. From
the first minute, we spoke like old friends, sometimes until late at night.
Although he was not well, he let me watch him live for a little. We said
things to each other that I can’t repeat. It is not that they are secret; they
are just very delicate. Like butterflies or hummingbirds. To repeat them
would destroy them.
We met again in Los Angeles two months later (he seemed in much better
shape). We spent a last afternoon together; we hung out; we had a laugh;
smoked a cigarette. And it was time to go.
We stayed in touch. We were now friends. In his emails, he always talked
about his health as an amusing detail, a little whim of the body. Two
weeks before his death, I got a last, humorous, loving email warning me
that the “body ferociously insists on gravitational rights.” A little nod
at my theme of the fall of men and angels. And then, he left. It broke my
heart, of course, but that’s what hearts are for.
Crammed with photos, footnotes, a blizzard of evidence, of fantastic research
and opinion: this is ESSENTIAL.
Poisoning Pigeons in the Park brings Tom Lehrer
into 2024 with this new collection of the best,
funniest and darkest songs from his career –
alongside newly created illustrations by the
talented Bob Dewar and introduced by the prolific national treasure Gyles Brandreth.
From ‘The Elements Song’ to ‘We’ll all go together when we go’, these hilariously dark lyrics
will keep you on your toes as you make your way through his ever-familiar work. With building
political tension around the world, Lehrer’s satire remains relevant as ever. It will not only be a
hit with fans of Lehrer’s work but newer fans of black humour in general.
Additionally, those who follow Bob Dewar’s work will also be keen to see how he illustrates
Lehrer’s lyrics.
He is the greatest comedy songwriter of all time.
adam kay, bbc Desert Island Discs
Tom Lehrer, in my opinion, is the cleverist and funniest man of the 20th century.
daniel radcliffe, The Graham Norton Show
TOM LEHRER is an American musician and singer-songwriter. In the 1950s-60s
he recorded many satiric and humorous songs that became popular. Whilst
his songs often used popular music forms of the time, he also wrote original
melodies. Tom commonly deals with dark humour and taboo subjects.
He produced songs about political and current issues, particularly for the
television show That Was the Week That Was. In the 1970s Tom retired from
songwriting – finally declaring that satire was dead when he heard that Henry
Kissinger had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize – to become a professor
of mathematics and musical theatre history at the University of California.
He also taught at Harvard University and MIT. Since his retirement, Tom has
rarely made a public appearance.
Home Game
ANDY GREIG
Summary:
An estimated 100 million people worldwide are
homeless and 1.6 billion live in sub-standard
housing. But how can such a simple game like
football tackle such a complex problem? Mel
Young and Peter Barr tell the story of the 1.2
million homeless people from 70 countries who
have taken part in the Homeless World Cup
since it started in 2003. Home Game describes
its profound impact on players, spectators and
society at large – and how ‘a ball can change
the world’.
ABOUT US
DISTRIBUTION
Committed to publishing well written
books worth reading, Luath Press is a
leading independent book publisher with
over 800 books in print including modern
fiction, history, politics, travel guides,
poetry and much more.
Luath Press was established by Tom
and Rene Atkinson in Barr (near Girvan
in Ayrshire) in 1981. Tom had recently
returned to Scotland and, finding there
were no good descriptive guides to the
popular parts of Scotland, set about
writing and publishing the Luath Guides
series. Other books by other writers
followed including a number of popular
titles that have remained in print for
many years, such as Mountain Days and
Bothy Nights, Bare Feet and Tackety Boots
and more.
Following Tom’s retirement, Gavin
and Audrey MacDougall took over the
running of the company and moved it
from Barr to Edinburgh.
Since 1997, Luath has built on the sound
core of well established books first
published by Tom and Rene, and created
various new series (On the Trail Of..., Walk
With Luath, The Quest For, Let’s Explore,
Luath Storyteller, Viewpoints, Wild Lives)
and launched various new writers and
poets (Darren McGarvey, Alison Irvine,
Daniel Gray, Rab Wilson, Mark Thomson
and many more).
We are now situated in offices on
Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile, and we
remain committed to publishing well
written books worth reading.
