around the villages — 1 around the villages — 2 During the past year, the Royal British Legion Sonning Branch has been remembering several significant events from past wars including: — The 110th anniversary of the start of World War I. — It was 80 years since D-Day. The Normandy Landings of 6 June were the largest sea borne invasion in history, and began the Allied invasion of Normandy which led to the liberation of France and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. — It was also 80 years since the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy, the bloodiest battle of the Italian Campaign, when Allied forces finally broke through the Germans’ notorious ‘Gustav Line’ and freed Route Six and the way to Rome. — 2024 was the 80th anniversary of the battles for Kohima and Imphal where, in northeast India, the Imperial Japanese Army was held off by much smaller numbers of British and Indian troops. In Kohima alone, the defenders held off a staggering 25 Japanese attacks over 14 days in appalling conditions. When Indian troops arrived to relieve the defenders, the Japanese encirclement was broken. Among the liberators was Havildar Major A Duck billed platypus is surprised to see a duck filled fatty puss. The story is told in the film A Bridge too Far. As the Royal British Legion reminded us, 'While D-Day was fundamental to the allied victory, the Second World War was not won on any single day – or battle – and we recognise and pay tribute to all who served from the British Armed Forces, Commonwealth Philip Mason and allied nations, such as those who served in the Battles of Monte Cassino, Imphal and Kohima, Operation Market Garden and the Scheldt.' And also during the year they looked beyond the Second World War, to Kosovo and Afghanistan. The Legion also paid tribute to those who served, and currently serve, in Kosovo 25 years after the deployment of the NATO peacekeeping force, and those who served in Afghanistan — Thursday 12 December is the 10th anniversary of the end of the UK's involvement in Operation Herrick in Afghanistan. RNLI seek muscians After a successful Celebration Supper in October, where the RNLI Sonning Branch was able to forward a profit of £2,058 to its headquarters, they are now planning a Music Night. It will be held in Pearson Hall, on Saturday 15 February. Tickets are £15 each from David Bates on 0118 969 7376.
