New mural making a splash as
students take lead from the past
• By Winston Davey
IN 1979, LINWOOD High School
students were called in to paint a
mural at the Woolston Park Pool.
Fast forward 45 years and students
at the school, now called Te
Aratai College, have been back on
the job painting a mural at Te Pou
Toetoe Linwood Pool.
With the help of visual artist Nick
Lowry, six students painted the
mural over a three day period.
The city council asked Te Aratai
College to help in the hope it would
connect the school with the community
like it did years ago.
The Woolston Park Pool was demolished
in 2010, taking the mural
with it.
“The council got hold of the
school asking if some students
wanted to be part of it,” said teacher
Ali Nightingale.
“The pool is just down the road
from the school and our students
use it for swimming, so it made
sense.”
Nightingale said students “selfvolunteered”
after a notice was run
in the school paper.
Planning for the mural took a
few months, Nightingale said, with
the students visiting the site for
inspiration.
The students came up with a
rough design which included cabbage
trees and local birds like the
bellbird and kererū as well as the
Port Hills, then sent it to Lowry to
develop into a final plan.
Work on the mural began
with drawing chalk outlines and
blacking out blocks before moving
on to the final stage – painting.
Lowry was on hand to assist with
mixing the paint colours.
Nightingale said she was there
only in a supporting role and the
painting “was done by the students
themselves’’.
mural over a three day period. Pictured below from left to right: Verna Nery, Isabel Marshall-Ma,
Cancer survivor’s Movember mission
• By Winston Davey
A YEAR AGO, Sam Daly
was battling stage 2 testicular
cancer. Now he is in remission
and using his voice and legs to
raise money for Movember and
men’s health.
For every $50 donated this
month, Daly resident will run
1km, with the goal of reaching
60km for the 60 men who die
every hour across the world
from suicide.
Daly, 34, who is now a teacher
at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary
School in Strowan, has been
running through Bottle Lake
Forest with his dog Odie.
He says after his own cancer
experience he is “determined”
to raise awareness of the disease,
which is the most common
cancer in men aged 15-45. He
says he is in a “unique position,
where I can share such an
experience”.
Daly was diagnosed with
testicular cancer in July last
year. Two weeks later he had
surgery to remove his testicle
which was successful, but the
cancer spread to his vascular
system.
He then had three courses
of chemotherapy over nine
weeks, which consisted of being
hooked up to a chemotherapy
drip every day for six hours
straight some weeks.
“To say it was brutal
RECOVERY: Sam Daly teaching at St Patrick’s Catholic
Primary School this week. Inset – in hospital last year
treated for testicular cancer.
would be an understatement,”
said Daly.
He was always fatigued to the
point he could barely spend
time with his wife Katie, 39,
and two children, Alina, 6, and
Lachlan, 2.
Daly was studying during
his cancer battle and says the
financial stress was hard.
His wife Katie had a supportive
work place but Daly says “we had
to jump through so many hoops
and still we only just made it
through”.
He said the long-term effects
are “quite a challenge” as he gets
random nausea and still has high
levels of fatigue.
“It would be a miracle if I’m up
after 9pm,” he said.
The biggest long-term effect is
the mental game, he said.
“Every time I feel any pain
or discomfort or even just
something weird, my brain will
jump straight to the cancer is
back.
“Every time I get a check-up
scan, I go through the worst case
scenario in my head. All this
really takes its toll on my overall
mental health.”
He says he was “extremely
lucky” to have a positive outcome
and to have caught the cancer
early.
“The scary part is the speed
that testicular cancer spreads
is so fast that a few weeks later
it could’ve been caught too
late.”
Being a teacher is one of the
reasons why he is partaking in
Movember. He wants to help
other men to be “vigilant and
check on those around you”.
Daly said he chose to run
because his “normally bushy
beard and moustache” has not
grown back as well as before
his treatment and running was
“something healthy” he could do
to promote men’s health.
Daly has so far raised $675.
“A local team for local people”
IMPACT: Sam Daly lost his
hair last year after being
on a chemotherapy drip
every day.
Diddly Squat: Home to Roost
by Jeremy Clarkson
It’s been another memorable year on Diddly Squat Farm - will the chickens finally come
home to roost? Welcome back to Clarkson’s Farm. The spring crop failed. Farming sheep,
pigs and cows was hardly more lucrative (better off breeding ostriches...) But in the face
of uncooperative weather, bureaucracy, and the world’s persistent refusal to recognise
his genius, our hero’s not beaten yet. Not while the farm shop’s still doing a roaring trade
in smelly candles, he isn’t.
Misery loves company and in girlfriend Lisa, Farm Manager Kaleb, Cheerful Charlie and
Gerald his Head of Security Jeremy’s got the best. And it’s hard to feel too gloomy with a
Sam’s Rocks a ground-breaking journey
WHILE MOST kids might
outgrow their fascination
with treasure hunting, Sam Cook
is turning his passion for stones
into a budding small business.
Diagnosed with autism 18
months ago, Sam’s journey with
digging in backyards and beaches
hasn’t just been one of discovery,
but patience and dedication to
learning about the natural world.
“I’m always on the hunt for the
perfect rock, I could spend hours
hunting for them and studying
them,” the 7-year-old from
Halswell said.
His mum Melinda Collins
said Sam has a unique way
of engaging with the world,
showing an inquisitive mind
but finding some environments
overwhelming.
While raising a child with
autism has its challenges, she
has seen how working to perfect
his passion helps Sam build
confidence, regulate his emotions
and build new skills.
“Sam has such an incredible
mind. He’s inquisitive, innovative
and creative, not to mention his
amazing ability to hyper-focus on
things he’s interested in,” Collins
said.
Sam’s passion is rooted
in family connections – his
grandfather was a hobby carver
in Australia and would craft
pieces from zebra rock, a unique
stone found in the remote Pilbara
desert where he lived.
“(Sam’s) always been
ROCK HOUND: Sam Cook is turning his love of rocks into a small business, thanks to help
from Manawanui’s Fund for Good.
surrounded by my father’s work,
then when my partner gave
me a pounamu necklace for
my birthday he was completely
blown away by the idea of
hunting for all sorts of different
stones and creating your own
unique pieces of jewellery and
ornaments,” Collins said.
When she learned of
Manawanui’s Fund For Good
initiative, she saw a way for
Sam’s love of stone and crystal
collecting to evolve into
something bigger.
“Mum asked me to think about
what kind of tools I would need
to make the stones I found even
nicer,” Sam said.
The skills Sam has developed
– attention to detail, patience,
and the reward of seeing his hard
work polished to perfection –
have also been transformative for
his everyday life.
“Sam is currently learning
about emotional regulation at
school and they talk about zones
of regulation. When he’s in the
yellow zone, he’s stressed and
anxious. Now he’s identified that
playing with rocks helps him get
back to the green zone, which
is when he’s calm and happy,”
Collins said.
She sees a growing confidence
in Sam as he prepares to share
his collection with others at local
markets, a venture that will also
help him build social skills.
The $3500 Sam received from
Manawanui has gone towards
the purchase of a state-of-the-art
rock tumbler, which will enable
him to polish his stones. He’s
also set up a website where he
can share his favourite creations
and the stories of where he found
them.
Manawanui, an individualised
funding provider, launched Fund
For Good in 2019 to help people
like Sam bring dreams to life.
Manawanui’s chief executive
Marsha Marshall said the
initiative provides funding that
its recipients wouldn’t be able to
find elsewhere, for them to do
something specific that meets
their goals.
With Manawanui’s help, Sam
will soon offer his polished stones
at markets in Christchurch.
His business venture, aptly
named ‘Sam Rocks’, is set to
sell tumbled rocks, stones and
handcrafted jewellery. Collins
said he will be busy preparing
for his first market in early 2025
– with a goal of earning $1000 in
sales in his first year.
The venture will not only allow
Sam to share his love for rocks
with others, but also offer him
the chance to build the social
skills and business experience
that will set him up for the
future.
Diwali celebrated with food, dance and colour
KIMIHIA EARLY Learning
Centre in Phillipstown celebrated
the festival of Diwali with friends,
family and members of their
community.
Diwali, known as the festival of
lights, is a multi-faith South Asian
celebration with the theme of victory
of good over evil.
This time, especially for immigrants
from the subcontinent, can
be difficult due to isolation from
their extended families, communities
and countries of origin.
Said centre manager Radhika
Chakrabarti: “Recognising this,
and celebrating the festival is
a small gesture for us towards
strengthening those children who
are away from their culture.”
In the days leading up to the celebration,
children helped to make
decorations, painted clay oil lamps
(diya) and created Rangoli – geometric
artworks made of flowers,
coloured powders and grains.
Guests were treated to a traditional
feast, including a special
Diwali lunch menu.
Entertainment was provided
with Bollywood dance
performances by Kimihia teachers
and parents. Te Aratai College
student also performed traditional
Bharatanatyam and Bhangra
dances.
Divyanka Rai, Pooja Suryavanshi, Radhika Chakrabarti and Aashi Sharma delivered a
Bollywood-style dance performance and Arnit Suryavanshi showed off his dance moves.
Rangoli art created by Pooja Suryavanshi and Divyanka Rai welcomed visitors to Kimihia
Early Learning Centre’s Diwali celebrations, including pupil Maiki Tomars who dressed for
the occasion.
Police community beat team members with Kimihia
parent and board member Amol Suryavanshi, parent Pooja
