The Turkish economy appears to be on a positive

course as confidence indices have been increasing

since the second half of the year, while real sector and

household expectations for 12-month-ahead inflation

declined, and positive expectations for the future of the

economy increased.

The economic confidence index, which reached the

threshold of 100 in March, fell in subsequent months,

landing at 93.1 in August, and it recovered, reaching 98

in October, its five-month high.

The consumer confidence index started rising after

hitting its lowest at 75.9 in July. It saw a steady increase

in the following months, reaching 80.6 in October, its

highest in 16 months. The real sector confidence index

started the year at 102.9 and declined to 98 in August.

The index rose again in October to 102.2, recording

its highest in five months. The services confidence

fluctuated throughout the year, hitting a four-month

high at 114.2 in October.

The 12-month-ahead annual inflation estimates by

the Turkish central bank reached its highest in recent

years at 45.28% in October 2023, declining to 27.44%

in October this year.

The annual inflation estimates for the real sector

peaked at 70.1% in November 2022 and fluctuated

before falling. The rate reached its 15-month low at

it has a comparative advantage based on its factor endowments.

Thus, world trade markets allow producers and consumers of the

Despite the global imbalances and the regional turmoil, the Turkish

economy sustains its strong position on the path of sustainable

growth. As for Türkiye’s exporters, they wish to relentlessly

Turkish companies managed to diversify their export markets.

Realizing a fascinating growth in the past decade, the business

World Bank revises up

global growth forecast for

2024

GDP growth projected at 2.6% this year, 2.7% in 2025-26

ANKARA – The World Bank revised the global growth forecast

for this year to 2.6%, up 0.2 percentage point from its previous

projection.

The figure is foreseen to hold steady compared to last year for the

first time in three years despite heightened geopolitical tensions

and high interest rates, the bank said in its latest Global Economic

Prospects report.

The upward revision was led by continued solid growth in the US,

it stressed.

The bank forecast the gross domestic product (GDP) growth will

edge up to an average of 2.7% in 2025-26 amid modest growth in

trade and investment.

The figure is below the 3.1% average in the decade before the

pandemic or 2010-19.

“Four years after the upheavals caused by the pandemic, conflicts,

inflation, and monetary tightening, it appears that global economic

growth is steadying,” said Indermit Gill, the World Bank Group’s

chief economist and senior vice president.

The GDP in developing economies are forecast to increase 4% on

average in 2024-25 and in advanced economies to hike 1.5% this

year before rising to 1.7% next year.

Gill underlined the need for developing economies to find ways to

encourage private investment, reduce public debt, and improve

education, health, and basic infrastructure.

The report highlighted that one in four developing economies is

expected to remain poorer than it was in 2019.

The World Bank hiked its growth projection for China by 0.3

percentage point to 4.8% this year, due to stronger-than-expected

activity in early 2024, particularly exports. The world’s secondlargest

economy is projected to grow 4.1% in 2025, down 0.32 point

from the January report.

The GDP in the US is expected to increase by 2.5% this year and

1.8% next year, with upward revisions of 0.9 point and 0.1 point,

respectively.

The euro area’s GDP growth is projected to come in at 0.7% in 2024,

the same as foreseen in the previous report, and 1.4% in 2025, a

downward revision of 0.2 points.

The Turkish economy’s growth forecast was cut by 0.1 point to 3%

for 2024 and 0.3 point to 3.6% for next year.

The World Bank projected the global inflation to average at 3.5%

this year and 2.9% in 2025.

Global interest rates are likely to remain high by the standards of

recent decades -- averaging about 4% over 2025-26, roughly double

the 2000-19 average, read the report.

capital inflows contribute to reserve

accumulation and support macro stability.

The annual current account deficit, which

decreased by $46 billion compared to May

2023, fell to its lowest level in 33 months,

the minister noted.

The strong outlook for external financing

continues. Portfolio inflows were $2.9 billion

were in September and $28 billion in the

first nine months. During this period, the

external debt rollover ratios of banks and

real sectors reached 166 percent and 138

percent, respectively.

Excluding gold and energy, the current account

posted a net surplus of $7.73 billion,

the Central Bank said on Nov. 12. Exports

and imports were at $21.7 billion and $24.8

billion, respectively, leading to a goods deficit

of $3.1 billion, up from the previous

month’s gap of $2.88 billion.

Services recorded a net inflow of $7.39 billion

in September. Under services, travel

items recorded a net inflow of $5.97 billion,

with the inflows in the January-September

period amounting to $37.76 billion, up

from $33.34 billion a year ago.

Non-residents’ transactions on equity securities

recorded net sales of $83 million and

government domestic debt securities recorded

net purchases of $1.73 billion, the Central

Bank said.

Direct investment recorded a net inflow

of $649 million in September, while direct

investment inflows in the first 9 months of

2024 were $3.44 billion against the inflows

of $2.77 billion in the same period of last

year.

Non-resident banks’ deposit accounts held

within domestic banks increased by $363

million, with a decrease of $182 million in

foreign currency and an increase of $545

million in Turkish Lira accounts.

In January-September, the current account

balance ran a deficit of $5.27 billion, significantly

lower than the current account deficit

of $36.1 billion in the same period of

2023.
