Eighth Annual 2012

Eighth Annual 2012 Central California Parent Magazine’s Eighth Annual Readers’ Choice Awards Keeping kids outfitted, finding fabulous places for fun and even knowing where to grab a bite to eat are all in a day’s work for us parents. To make it easier we decided a little networking was in order. So once again Central California Parent Magazine polled all you moms and dads out there to tell us what’s worth raving about—and we heard you loud and clear! Thanks to everyone who filled out the Reader’s Choice Award Ballot—we’re sure lots of other families will enjoy checking out your picks. Top Getaway Families like to get up and go all kinds of places, but tops this year is Yosemite National Park (209-372-0200). Spectacular falls, towering trees, plenty of trails for all levels and breathtaking scenery everywhere you look make this a great outdoor adventure. For more to do, our readers recommend Pismo Beach (805-773-7034) with it’s shallow waters, sandy shoreline and swings that make for a great break from the Valley heat. Most Amusing Roeding Park’s Storyland (890 W. Belmont Ave., Fresno 559-264-2235) comes through loud and clear where fairy tales come alive as kids walk into the pages of a storybook as the winner in our Entertainment & Amusement Centers category. Close behind is Boomers (7354 N. Abby St., Fresno 559-432-9684) with everything from bumper boats to tiny tots cars to a rock climbing wall keep everyone on the go. There’s also miniature golf, laser tag and a game room. Best Beasts The Chaffee Zoo, open every day of the year in Fresno’s Roeding Park (894 W. Belmont Avenue, Fresno 559-498- 5910), continues to be the favorite place to see animals. The zoo is home to more than 730 mammals, birds, reptiles and the Winged Wonders Bird Show. Don’t forget to ask about summer camps, giraffe feeding and camel rides! • Central California PARENT • June 2012 Perfect Park Woodward Park (7775 Friant Road, Fresno) plays out as the most popular park place for families. It’s 300 acres include an authentic Japanese Garden, fenced dog park, two-mile equestrian trail, exercise par course, three children’s playgrounds, a lake, 3 small ponds, 7 picnic areas (with barbecues, electricity and water fountains) and five miles of multipurpose trails that are part of the San Joaquin River Parkway’s Lewis S. Eaton Trail. Oso de Oro Lake Park (5550 N. Forkner, Fresno) also garnered plenty of votes as a popular play date destination. Waterpark Pick When the mercury soars past 100 degrees families flee to waterparks! The Island Waterpark and Family Fun Village (Fresno; 559-277-6800) makes the biggest splash with families, followed by Wild Waters (Clovis; 559-299-9453). Winning Winter Wonderland When it comes to skiing China Peak (559-233-2500) near Shaver Lake is king of the mountains, followed by Badger Pass (209-372-8430) in Yosemite. Ideal Indoor Sport Center Fresno indoor Soccer (5075 N. Cedar Ave, Fresno 559- 224-5425) with classes for ages 18 months through 6 years old, adult leagues, Lil’ Kickers and youth leagues scored a goal with our readers this year. Skywalk, Fresno’s Ultimate Trampoline Arena (10432 Highway 41, Madera 559-326-2022) is second on the list for fun any day! Finest Festival For the fifth year in a row the blue ribbon goes once again to The Fresno Fair (559-650-3247), an overwhelming favorite with its carnival rides, mouthwatering treats, exhibits and shows taking place in October. Big Hat Days (Clovis Chamber of Commerce, 559-299-7363) and Vintage Days at California State University Fresno (5241 N. Maple Avenue, Fresno 559-278-2741) also rank high. Must See Museum There’s nothing musty about The Discovery Center (1515 Van Ness Ave., Fresno 559-441-1444), where science, nature and regional history adventures await. Also popular is The Fresno Art Museum (2233 N. First Street, Fresno 559-441-4221) and the Children’s Museum of the Sierra (49269 Golden Oak Drive, Oakhurst 559-658-5656). Historical Hot Spot Historical sites are just the ticket for creating family memories of your own. Kearney Mansion (7160 W. Blackstone Avenue and 1401 N. Wishon Avenue, Fresno 559-222-6539) receive a standing ovation from Fresno families. Roger Rocka’s Junior Company (559- 266-0660) also received rave reviews. Best Book Nook The word is out—for an outstanding selection of children’s books families browse at Barnes & Noble (Riverpark Shopping Center, Fresno. 559-437-0484). Ranking a close second is Petunia’s Place (Opus 1 Shopping Center, 6027 N. Palm Avenue, Fresno; 559- 438-1561). Both have a wonderful selection of children’s books and children’s storytimes each week—need we say more? Super Skater Rinks Skaters think it’s super cool to chill out on the ice at Gateway Ice Center (2473 N. Marks Ave., Fresno 559- 277-2233). Our readers also love to rock and roll around the Cal Skate Clovis Roller Rink (2881 Peach Ave., Clovis. 559-291-0241). Continued page 10
