Unlocking Progress: What
Big Tech Teaches Us About
Development
Voice actors recording
Ouro Negro
Our partners are the backbone of progress, delivering the “hardware” of
development—life-saving infrastructure, health services, and technical training that
transform lives. But hardware alone isn’t enough. Communities need the “software”
to process support, shift norms, and adopt life-changing behaviors.
Ouro Negro, launched by PCI Media in partnership with UNICEF in 2014,
demonstrates the profound impact of integrating development software with
hardware. UNICEF provided the hardware: the “Facts for Life” framework and
essential health services to reduce child mortality in Mozambique. PCI Media
contributed the software—an 8-season radio drama that captured the nation’s
imagination, with 6 million loyal audience members.
The results of this integrated approach speak volumes. A 2022 independent study
revealed that:
90%
75%
of Ouro Negro’s audience members
improved at least one health behavior, and
shared their newfound knowledge with
others.
Ouro Negro exemplifies how development software can drive the successful
adoption and retention of life-saving practices. We’ve further built on Ouro Negro
through our Access Without Barriers program to include sign language to reach
the deaf community, a hard-to-reach population, and trainings for service providers.
Access Without Barriers is funded by the Government of Flanders.
With your partnership and greater investment in communication strategies, we can
amplify progress and create lasting change.
Combining partner hardware with our software is already driving
meaningful change. Here’s a glimpse at what we’ve achieved together in
2023.

“I have a 13-year-old daughter, but never considered talking to her about
sexual health. Listening to these [radio] programs I learned I need to open a
conversation with her.”
Lucia*, PCI Radio Listener, Mozambique

When there’s dialogue, teen pregnancies decrease. That’s why PCI Media produces
sexual and reproductive health programs that make vital conversations like Lucia has
with her daughter possible.
Lucia and her daughter live in a small town in Southern Mozambique where women
and girls experience adverse health and social outcomes due to low levels of
education, high levels of gender-based violence, and harmful social norms.
A young girl who becomes pregnant faces increased health risks and could also be
expelled from school. This means losing access to her education and limiting her
future opportunities.
Our programs provide Lucia and her daughter – and women and girls like them
around the globe – with access to life-changing sexual and reproductive health
information and services, including pregnancy prevention.
We design programs that use the power of storytelling to challenge harmful social
norms, link audiences to essential services, and inspire new ways of living, taking on
issues affecting women and girls from maternal health to sexual health and genderbased
violence.

PCI produces media that provides access to sexual health education and services
for girls like Maria in underserved communities around the world. But there are
still too many teens without access.
Maria is just one of over 265,000 teens involved in the justice system in the United
States. 50% of teen girls involved in the system become pregnant by age 19,
leading to adverse health and social outcomes for them and their children. Lack
of access to sexual health education and trauma resulting in riskier behaviors are
driving factors.
At a time when reproductive rights are under attack in this country, the need to
generate solutions is paramount. With funding from the Office of Population
Affairs (OPA), we developed “Unstained,” a groundbreaking pilot miniseries to
reduce teen pregnancy and STIs among at-risk youth in the US.
Preliminary study results show 70% of participants increased their knowledge
about contraception, STIs, and consent. But this is just the beginning. We have
the opportunity to expand this program in the US and globally to empower more
teens to make informed choices about their sexual health.
This project is made possible by grant number 1 TP2H000070-01-11 from the HHS Office of Population Affairs. Contents are solely the responsibility
of the production team and do not represent the official views of the Department of Health and Human Services or the Office of

Empowering Mothers: Nutrition and Health in Somalia
In Somalia, violent conflict and natural disasters have left over 6 million people at risk
of famine. Among the most vulnerable are mothers and young children in internally
displaced persons (IDP) camps, facing severe malnutrition.
In partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), PCI Media has developed
a radio drama to support these communities. Grounded in local research and
collaboration, the program provides life-saving information on breastfeeding,
nutrition, and accessing essential resources. By featuring relatable characters with
varied knowledge, the drama fosters conversations that challenge misconceptions and
encourage healthier practices.

Cultivating Change: How “With Our Feet on the Soil” Supports
Sustainable Farming
In Central America, climate change and COVID-19 have deepened food insecurity.
Droughts, hurricanes, and health fears have threatened farming communities across the
region.
Since 2020, PCI Media has partnered with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and their Agua y
Suelo (ASA) program, “With Our Feet on the Soil,” a radio drama that blends sustainable
farming practices— like improving soil and managing water—with engaging storytelling
about the Rodríguez family, set in a fictional agricultural village.
The drama, reaching 4.2 million listeners in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and
Nicaragua, has inspired 85% of surveyed listeners to adopt sustainable farming practices.
Complementing the show, CRS’s trusted network of community promoters reinforce
messages on farming and COVID-19 safety, ensuring farmers could plant, grow, and sell
crops safely.
Thanks to the Nielsen Foundation and generous donors, we’re expanding the program
to better reach women farmers in Central America, who are most affected by the climate
crisis and face barriers to economic inclusion.
Through our partnership, we see how the power of media and community engagement
protects lives and livelihoods while strengthening food systems.

Restoring Ecosystems: Enhancing Climate Resilience through
Local Stories
In Mozambique’s coastal regions, where severe storms threaten lives and livelihoods,
mangrove forests provide essential protection for both people and ecosystems. Yet
these vital forests are under threat, as many communities depend on mangrove wood
for cooking fuel.
In partnership with World Wildlife Federation (WWF), PCI Media is harnessing the
power of local storytelling to inspire change. Through on-the-ground research, we
uncovered key insights into the daily lives, aspirations, and cultural beliefs of coastal
residents—including local legends about magical women who control crocodiles and
ceremonies that influence the weather.
These findings shaped our radio drama and community theater scripts, which weave
mythology with practical guidance. By connecting deeply with cultural heritage, the
program encourages communities to adopt new practices that restore and protect
mangrove ecosystems for future generations.
