Welcome to Auburn, the heart
of Placer County and the best
vibe in the Sierra foothills.
This historic Gold Rush community
is an outdoor mecca, home to some of
the world’s most storied endurance
races, with a rich culinary scene that
highlights locally grown food, wine, and
ale. In fact, Auburn’s exploding craft
brewery scene ranks among the best
in California.
As you start exploring, make a visit to
the California Welcome Center (1103
High Street), which is located on Central
Square in the Old Firehouse building.
The center celebrates the county’s rich
history and connects it to the modernday
outdoor playground. Check out the
interactive touchscreen to explore the
area’s hiking trails, museums, and the
wine and ale trail, or use the updated
kiosk to create a travel itinerary. If you’re
old school, browse the center for its trail
maps, attraction brochures, souvenirs,
and guidebooks. The knowledgeable staff
can help you plan your visit and assist
with finding some top spots to eat, have
a glass of wine, or start a walking tour of
one of Auburn’s historic districts.
From the Welcome Center, you can build
multiple itineraries, all within minutes.
If you like to hike, bike, or horseback
ride, you can explore hundreds of miles
of trails in the Auburn State Recreation
Area (ASRA), the heart of Confluence
of the North and Middle Fork of the
American River, just a 10-minute drive
from Auburn. If golf is your pleasure,
Placer County is home to more than
two dozen golf courses, some of which
are the most challenging in the
Sacramento region.
Trails crisscross the ASRA, and
you can get an amazing view of the
iconic Foresthill Bridge: the tallest
free-standing bridge in California
and the location of several movie and
commercial scenes. If it’s water fun
you like, world-class river rafting and
kayaking on the American River is
second to none, and you can take your
paddle boards out on Clementine
Reservoir, only a 15-minute drive from
the Welcome Center. Swimming holes
also abound in Placer County.
Auburn is a perfect staging area to
explore the Placer Wine & Ale Trail,
where you’ll find more than two
dozen wineries and a dozen breweries
(including three farm breweries), all
within 30 minutes of Auburn.
Shopping in Auburn is also a can’t-miss
experience. Both Downtown Auburn
and Old Town Auburn combine upscale
boutique shopping with art galleries, fun
eateries, and historic storefronts. From
the Auburn Alehouse in Old Town to
Restaurant Josephine and Tre Pazzi in
the center, to Monkey Cat and the laidback
outdoor vibe of The Station Public
House in Downtown, dining options here
are plentiful, varied, and top-notch.

Endurance Riding
Endurance riding is defined by the American
Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) as "an
athletic event with the same horse and rider
covering a measured course within a specified
maximum time."
Endurance rides are races that vary in distance
between 50-100 miles and are covered in a single
day. The horse with the fastest time is the winner,
providing the horse meets the “fit to continue”
criteria as determined by a veterinary staff. The
horses are monitored by veterinarians throughout
the ride at predetermined check points and will
be withdrawn from the ride if they’re judged
to be unsound or metabolically unfit. Each ride
has mandatory rests or “holds” for the horses
throughout.
The AERC was founded in 1972 as a national
governing body for long-distance riding. From
its early beginnings in Auburn, California, the
AERC has spread roots both nationally and
internationally. The AERC sanctions more than
700 rides each year throughout North America.
In addition to promoting the sport of endurance
riding, the AERC encourages the use, protection,
and development of equestrian trails, especially
those with historic significance. Many special
events of four to six consecutive days take place
over historic trails, such as the Pony Express Trail,
Outlaw Trail, Chief Joseph Trail, and Lewis and
Clark Trail.
For more info, aerc.org.
The founding ride of endurance riding, the
Western States Trail Ride, or "Tevis Cup," covers
100 miles of the famous Western States Trail, an
emigrant trail established in the 1850s through
the Sierra Nevada Mountains from Lake Tahoe
to Auburn. While it used to begin at Olympic
Valley (formerly Squaw Valley), it now kicks off
at Robie Park. These rides promote awareness
of the importance of trail preservation for future
generations and foster an appreciation of our
American heritage.
The Tevis Cup is named after Lloyd Tevis (1824-
1899), an early benefactor of this ride and a
prominent businessman in San Francisco. At the
race’s completion, the rider who completes the
100-mile, one-day course the quickest—and
whose horse is fit to continue and is in sound
condition—will be awarded the Tevis Cup Trophy.
The first to be awarded this was Nick Mansfield,
riding an 11-year-old thoroughbred cross gelding
named Buffalo Bill. Its 68th anniversary ride
took place on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Roughly
800 volunteers are present annually (which is
more than four volunteers per rider!). To provide
participants with the most daylight possible, the
ride is typically planned in July or early August—
on whichever Saturday is closest to the full moon.
For more info, visit teviscup.org.
Endurance Running
For those participating on two feet instead of
four, our area has two large events of note—
the first being the Western States Endurance
Run. Starting at Olympic Valley and ending in
Auburn, this consists of traveling 100 miles in
one day, bringing both mental and physical
challenges. Runners follow the middle portion of
the Western States Trail, dealing with rises and
dips in elevation along the way; in fact, within the
first five miles, there’s a 2,550 vertical foot climb.
Nearly half of the running journey will also take
place at night, and much of the run is through the
remote wilderness; it’s only accessible by horse,
helicopter, or foot. It’s not for the faint of heart! It
all goes down the last full weekend in June.
For more info, visit wser.org.
A slightly less challenging option in our area
(though nothing to sneeze at either), is the UMTB
50K Race. This Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc event
is essentially a mountain ultramarathon with
many locations worldwide. Here, runners both
start and finish the approximately 31-mile race
in Downtown Auburn, going from Robie Point
to Driver’s Flat with a return along the Foresthill
Divide Loop. This is a fast-rolling course that
embodies original Sierra trail running and is
treated with respect: UMTB has partnered with
Sage Trail Alliance’s Dillon Osleger to ensure the
trails are taken care of and hold their integrity.
The next race is scheduled for April 25-26, 2025.

Auburn
Arts by April Maynard
Commission
Nearly 30 years ago, the
Auburn Arts Commission was
established to support the
region’s arts community. Their early
work brought murals and live music to
the city’s streets and an art gallery to
the first floor of city hall showing the
work of local visual artists.
They went on to recruit local artists
to paint Auburn’s utility boxes and
beautify the area around city hall with
pollinator gardens and mosaic mural
installations. Eventually, the commission
broadened their reach—developing
the installation of umbrellas shading
the Art Park alongside the Stella mural
by Frank Ordaz (painted by Albert
the Estonian robot spray printer) and
spearheading the reimagining of the
Carnegie Library, which is currently
in the hands of AlmostFreeToAll, a
nonprofit that develops affordable
space for arts, culture, and community.
The commission is also behind Auburn’s
free Summer Concert Series and the
Art Walk, which places local artwork in
Auburn businesses.
The Auburn Arts Commission and
the City of Auburn understand that
supporting arts and culture, in all forms,
brings the vitality a community needs
to become a destination for the entire
region that will, in turn, support visual
and performing artists and benefit the
entire community.

Parades are an American—and Auburn—tradition.
From the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and
Corned Beef Dinner (March 17), Fourth of July
Parade and BBQ (July 4), and Veterans Day Parade
(November 11), to the beloved Festival of Lights Parade
(typically the first Saturday in December), there's a festive
celebration for ample occasions.
This year's Festival of Lights Parade will feature 100 floats,
including marching bands, churches, local businesses,
and charity groups. Since the parade is held after
sundown with a start time of 5:30 p.m., all entries must be
lighted to keep true to the theme: festival of lights.
The route is packed with families, friends, and
neighbors—most with their children in tow—to witness
the lights, floats, and Santa, who makes a special trip
from the North Pole just to be in the parade.
Old Town and Downtown Auburn merchants benefit
from the 7,000-9,000 people who come into town to
enjoy early holiday shopping, have a meal, and watch
the parade.
This parade, and the others held throughout the year,
are can't-miss events: lively gatherings that combine
community, patriotism, family, and fun.

Transportation
The City of Auburn’s Transit Department offers Auburn OnDemand,
a ride-share-like service that elevates riders’ public transportation
experiences. Operating within Auburn city limits and parts of
unincorporated Placer County, this service takes riders to and from
more desired locations than ever before. Riders can download the
GO South Placer app on their Apple or Android device or call the
dispatcher at 530-906-3171 to schedule and book rides.
Auburn Transit’s fleet is comprised of electric buses, suitable for
larger group bookings or passengers with ADA needs, as well as
Tesla Model Y passenger vehicles to ensure that riders of all abilities
are accommodated. This flexibility and range of vehicles allows the
service to operate in areas where traditional larger buses might face
challenges. The Auburn OnDemand service runs from 6 a.m.-7 p.m.
Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays.
Rider fares range from $1.75 for seniors, youth, or those requiring
ADA accessibility to $3.50 for general public riders. Fares can be paid
through the GO South Placer app, the dispatcher, or directly on Auburn
Transit vehicles by debit/credit cards or exact change.
Auburn OnDemand allows all members and visitors of the community
to experience Auburn’s rich history, culture, and landscape.

Auburn Area
Recreation
Park
District
by Kahl Muscott
The Auburn Area Recreation and Park District (ARD)
has been providing quality parks and recreation
services to the greater Auburn area since 1948. ARD
is independent of the City of Auburn, Placer County, and
the Auburn State Recreation Area, although we frequently
work together with those agencies.
Perhaps the best thing about ARD is the fact that, like many
special districts in California, we have specialized, focused
services (in our case, recreation and parks). This is what we
were created to do by the voters in 1948, and we have lived
up to that mission ever since.
ARD’s 11 major parks and three community centers offer a
wide variety of activities, amenities, and opportunities for
the public. Some of the highlights include Sierra Pool, the
Auburn area’s only full-sized swimming pool (which also
team, the Auburn Mermaids synchronized swim team, outstanding
after-school care at Auburn and Newcastle schools, exciting
youth and adult dance classes, and the ARD Youth Development
Basketball League (the area’s largest youth basketball league). ARD
is also close partners with the Auburn Pickleball Club.
Of course, there are also an eclectic and exciting mix of events
hosted by ARD—from the Floating Egg Hunt and Santa’s Chest
(both hold-over events from COVID-era creativity) to
community favorites, such as the Ain’t Necessarily Dead
Festival and the Auburn Harvest Festival.
For more info, visit auburnrec.com; or, better yet, swing
by a park, sign up for a class, or attend an event.
serves as the home swimming pool for Placer High School
and Colfax High School), James Field (the Auburn area’s
only full-sized baseball diamond, which also serves as the
home field for Placer High School), the award-winning
Auburn Bike Park, Ashley Memorial Dog Park, an 18-hole
disc golf course, and a growing number of pickleball courts
(the pickleball courts in Meadow Vista were some of the
very first courts in Northern California).
But it isn’t just these amazing facilities that benefit the
community. ARD also has a plethora of programs and
leagues, including the Auburn Robalos competitive swim

Keep Smilin' Promotions has been bringing high-caliber, fun-filled live
music experiences to Auburn for over two decades, and this season is
no exception. Found inside the historic Odd Fellows Lodge, shows are
held in what fans affectionately call the “Foothill Fillmore," where once
the music begins the magic happens.
Attendees have stated that shows here are reminiscent of the old San
Francisco halls, such as the famous Fillmore or Avalon Ballroom,
where the audience and bands work off each other to create
a unique and fun time for all—a place where one can escape
all their debts, doubts, and worries for a few hours.
Keep Smilin' combines one of the best sound systems in the region
with ever-changing, all-encompassing multimedia light shows to truly
present a one-of-a-kind experience—one that "you have to be there to
understand." The Odd Fellows, for whom all proceeds go back to the
community, staff the full bar, which also features local craft beers
and kombucha. Shows are 21+, so bring your ID!
This season features original and cover bands, including the likes of
Mother Hips, Pink Talking Phish, Dave Alvin & Third Mind, a “Very Jerry
Christmas” with Melvin Seals and JGB, and so much more.

Placer Artists Tour
by Trisa
Swerdlow
“The setting
was amazing. It
showcased not
only the artists’
work but the
beauty of the
foothills. Talking
with each of the
artists added to
the experience.”
—Placer Artists
Tour attendee
It’s time once again for the
most beloved annual art
event in Placer County!
The Placer Artists Tour takes
place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
daily from November 8-10
with some artists participating
in the encore weekend
November 15-17.
The Placer Artists Tour takes
place throughout the county,
but of the 120 artists on this
year’s tour, 36 of them are
showing in Auburn. We are also
excited to have six galleries and
four schools in Auburn that are
a part of the tour. That makes
Auburn the largest region for
this annual event!
The tour grows every year and
is the largest art tour in the
region. This year’s event will
feature 120 local artists and 78
locations.
The 2023 tour drew over 6,000
attendees. Not only did these
art enthusiasts visit the artists,
but they patronized local
shops, restaurants, and hotels,
bringing a boost to the region’s
economy.
We invite you to join us for this
FREE self-driving art tour and
enjoy the beauty of fall in the
foothills while experiencing
all the art Placer County has
to offer.
For the artists’ directory,

Auburn Cruise Nite
Auburn Cruise Nite started 40
years ago and is a summertime
staple in Downtown Auburn.
Hosted from Elm Street to the
Clock Tower, the second Friday
of the month (May through
September) from 5-9 p.m.,
the street is closed to through
traffic and filled with nearly 400
vehicles (hot rods, muscle cars,
classics, and trucks) from 1972
and older: all backed in with
their hoods open, most showing
their engine work.
The all-ages crowd ranges from
several hundred to a couple
thousand, depending on the
weather. The first night in May

are the most crowded—car and
people wise.
The sponsors and vendors keep
this a free event, for both the
cars/hot rods and the public.
Auburn Cruise Nite is a
volunteer-run, family-friendly
event—a place where you’ll see
friends gathering to catch up
and maybe discuss cars. Kids
can see what old cars used to
look and sound like. There’s
also food, refreshments, music,
T-shirts, and vendors, with
Downtown Auburn businesses
open for your convenience.

SEPTEMBER
The historic, art deco Auburn State Theatre has
a storied timeline as an entertainment hotspot
for more than 90 years. The theatre opened
in 1930 as a 1,325-seat movie palace and was
considered one of the most beautiful of the T&D
Jr. enterprise, whose empire included more than
60 theatres.
Today, the nonprofit Auburn State Theatre (AST)
offers an intimate setting for concerts, plays,
community events, and classic, documentary
and cult films. The stellar concessions offer a full
range of traditional movie snacks and local wine
and beer.
At time of publication, AST was undergoing
restoration; however, by the time you read this, it
may be up and running.
During the renovation, AST is working with
community partners to present events; highlights
include:
At Odd Fellows Lodge #7 (1226 ½ Lincoln Way)
The Forlorn Hope — December 6
In December 1846, 15 members of the Donner Party
set out during an extreme winter to seek help for their
snowbound and starving families. The “Forlorn Hope”
would become one of the most remarkable survival
stories of all time.
At First Congregational Church
(710 Auburn Ravine Road)
A Christmas Carol—December 13 & 14
AST’s State Theatre Acting Company (STAC) presents a
full-length, fully costumed radio show version of Charles
Dickens’ Ghost Story of Christmas. This family-friendly
favorite is sure to instill the true spirit of Christmas into
your holiday.

T
he Auburn Quail Trail
is the brainchild of the
Leadership Auburn Class of
2024’s community project and was
conceptualized with a few main
goals in mind. First, to create more
unification between the districts
of historic Auburn (Downtown
and Old Town); second, to offer
a free, fun, outdoor activity for
families and individuals of all ages
and abilities—both residents and
visitors alike—while highlighting
some of the natural beauty and
landmarks that already exist in our
beloved little town.
The Auburn Quail Trail is designed
to be a self-guided hop-on/hop-off
circular walking path throughout
historic Auburn (approximately
1.48 miles in length). Participants
can start or stop anywhere they
see the Auburn Quail Trail signage;
simply scan the QR code on any
of the signs with your phone’s
camera app and it will take
you straight to the Quail Trail
webpage and mapping options
(exploreauburn.com/quail-trailexplore-auburn).
Each location
on the webpage shares personal
stories and cherished memories
for all the points of interest, giving
it a much more personalized and
community-oriented feeling.
The Auburn Quail Trail is a “makeyour-own-adventure”
of sorts,
where you can spend as much or
as little time on the trail as you
like. Visit all the locations in a day
or do one at a time. The journey is
completely up to you!
The purpose of the Auburn Quail
Trail is to bring the community
together and get people outside
and active, doing something free
with their friends, family, and
loved ones; and to showcase how
walkable Auburn is while also
sharing some of the city’s most
unique and beloved spots.

Auburn
Municipal Airport
by Tyghe Richardson
Auburn Municipal
Airport has been a
cornerstone of the
City of Auburn and the
surrounding regions for 90
years, evolving from its early
days as a mail route stop into
a vital hub of aviation and
community development.
The airport's history began
in the 1920s near Bell Road,
serving as a crucial mail
route and aviation hub. In
1934, it was relocated to its
current 253-acre site near
Grass Valley Highway (originally
160 acres). Historical
documentation and newspaper
articles indicate that
the first use of the airport
at this location began in
October 1934, with lighting
and 24-hour service added
in November of that same
year. During World War II,
the airport was repurposed
for military use, contributing
to the war effort.
After the war, in 1946, local
stakeholders purchased
the land and gifted it to the
City of Auburn to ensure its
continued airport operation.
Significant developments
occurred in the 1970s and
1980s, including land acquisitions,
runway expansions,
and the establishment of an
industrial park. The runway
was lengthened to 3,700
feet in 2001, enhancing its
operational capabilities.
Today, the airport plays a
key role in driving economic
growth in the region,
supporting various aviation
services, and leasing land for
commercial and industrial
use. This has led to significant
development in the
surrounding areas, including
commercial growth along
Grass Valley Highway and
the expansion of the industrial
park.
Auburn Municipal Airport's
strategic location enhances
Auburn's connectivity,
making it a gateway for
tourism and regional travel.
The improved transportation
links have made Auburn
more accessible to visitors,
boosting local attractions,
and supporting economic
growth through increased
visitor engagement.
As the airport celebrates its
90th anniversary, its commitment
to modernization and
24/7 operations underscores
its importance to
the community. With a rich
history and ongoing impact
on economic development
and tourism, the Auburn
Municipal Airport continues
to be an integral part of the
region's fabric.

Sutter Auburn
Faith Hospital
Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital
provides acute care in
California’s Gold Country
near the Sierra Nevada
Mountains base. They put the
small-town charm and friendliness
that Auburn is known for at the
forefront for their patients.
At just 64 beds—about half the
amount the average hospital
holds—there’s room for these personalized
touches. You’ll find other
fun tidbits that make it unique
to Auburn, such as its on-site Gold
Country Café.
That’s not to say modern, cutting-edge
care isn’t top of mind,
either; this location has been
named a Primary Stroke Center
by The Joint Commission. To get
this recognition, a hospital must
always have an acute stroke team
and neurologists available, providing
neurological services more
quickly than the average hospital.
There’s a dedicated area for
stroke patients, specialized equipment
is available, and staff are
dedicated to maintaining higher
stroke outcomes. Whether it’s for
stroke patients or otherwise, the
hospital uses the latest technologies
wherever possible.
What’s more in “latest things”? A
new CEO, for one. As of September
3, Shanthi Margoschis has
stepped into this role for Sutter
Auburn Faith Hospital. She brings
with her over 30 years in the
health care field, including leading
roles with Kaiser and Mercy.
“Community hospitals provide an
important service to residents,
and I am committed to ensure
that everyone is provided with
top-quality, compassionate health
care,” Margoschis says. “Sutter
Auburn Faith Hospital has a rich
history in south Placer County
and throughout the region, and
I am thrilled to partner with its
physicians, nurses and other staff
in delivering the best, affordable
care possible.”
