Estados Unidos. Pero también estoy aquí para

todos y de parte de todos. Mi voz está formada

Dover fue fundado en 1722 para apoyar a la

industria del hierro. Durante 302 años, el pueblo

ha abierto las puertas a cientos de negocios que

han construido la identidad y el desarrollo de la

ciudad.

I durante cada uno de esos 302 años, el pueblo

ha abierto sus puertas a personas de todo el

mundo. Aquellos inmigrantes que forjaron hierro

y construyeron el Canal de Morris se convirtieron

en residentes generacionales—hijos e hijas

nativos, bisnietos y bisnietas—que trabajan en

tiendas, sirven en el gobierno local, siguen sus

sueños y abren pequeños negocios, enseñan a

nuestros niños, o construyen los hogares en los

que vivimos.

David Chmiel y Karen Fucito son periodistas de

Dover was founded in 1722 to support the iron

industry. For 302 years, the town has opened

the doors for hundreds of businesses that

built the town’s identity and development.

And for every day of those 302 years, the

town has opened its doors to people from

around the world. Those immigrants who

forged iron and built the Morris Canal

became generational residents—native sons

and daughters, great-grandsons and greatgranddaughters—who

work in shops, serve

in local government, follow their dreams and

open small businesses, teach our children, or

build the homes we live in.

These are the personal histories that

represent Dover’s past, present, and future.

DOVERNOW is dedicated to every person

who makes up the ethnic, cultural, and

human quilt of the Dover experience.

What is DOVERNOW? It is the magazine

dedicated to shining a light on the people

and places, the institutions and faces that

give the town its energy and heart. We will

recognize its thriving business community,

tell human-interest stories, share its history,

and report on hard topics. We will be an

advocate for everyone who doesn’t feel they

have a voice, listen to those who don’t feel

heard, and celebrate the determination of a

community.

Who are we? We are a company called

West Morris Media, created specifically to

serve Dover residents. Editors David Chmiel

and Karen Fucito are longtime journalists

committed to creating an objective news

source to serve everyone. We will operate

from the Richards Building on 7 N. Sussex

St. We will support the magazine with

dovernow.com to update the community on

breaking and daily news around town. We are

a small business, just like you. We hope that

you will support us as we will support you.

We will publish in Spanish and English and

are looking for bilingual reporters, writers,

photographers, artists, videographers, and

influencers who want to be part of the

DOVERNOW team.

What are we? We are your eyes and ears. Your

questions and comments are our directions

to represent the community, its people, and

its unique issues, celebrate its successes, and

face its challenges. We can’t do this without

you. We need contributors like you to share

your unique skills and talents.

We need to hear your voices to empower

others to raise theirs.

Puede que conozcas el Parque Waterworks como un lugar

¿Pero sabías que el Camino de Sirga de Dover es parte de un

fragmento de 111 millas de la historia de Nueva Jersey?

El Canal de Morris fue construido entre 1825 y 1831 para

transportar carbón desde el lado de Pensilvania del río

Delaware hasta el río Hudson y la ciudad de Nueva York.

Desempeñó un papel importante en el desarrollo de Dover

the Dover Towpath?

You may know Waterworks Park as a perfect spot for a picnic or a walk

along the water. But did you know that the Dover Towpath is part of a

111-mile piece of New Jersey history?

The Morris Canal was built from 1825-31 to transport coal from the Pennsylvania

side of the Delaware River to the Hudson River and New York City. It played a

big role in Dover’s development as a steel and iron town. You can learn more

at the Dover Historical Society.

The plan by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, Canal Society,

and Morris Canal Working Group is to create a full trail and greenway space

that will follow the historic canal route from Phillipsburg to Jersey City and run

through six New Jersey counties.

Mi Pueblo de Dover

Tiene la belleza y la alegría de todos los colores, pero lo que

predomina en su diaria existencia es el brillo que ilumina la vida

diaria de sus habitantes. Quienes crecieron allí aman sus calles, su

comunidad, su algarabía y su paz. Quienes recién la conocen se

enamoran de ella a primera vista.

‘QUIENES LO

CONOCEN SE

ENAMORAN A

PRIMERA VISTA .’

Dover es así, distinta. Excitante y relajada al

mismo tiempo. Conocerla es amarla.

A veces me pregunto: ¿Por qué será

que amo tanto a mi Town of Dover? A

continuación enumero algunas de las

razones que encontré.

Cuando camino por Blackwell Street

comprendo que al hacerlo estoy

atravesando el corazón de la ciudad.

Recorrer la calle principal es sentir el

latido de su pueblo, ese que llega desde el

condado de Morris a todo el Estado Jardín.

Desde tan solo unas pocas millas cuadradas se puede hacer conocer

su pasión, que se destaca como una vibración que le da vida y alegría

a New Jersey.

Sus comercios son la rutina necesaria para recorrer todos los países

de Latinoamérica en una caminata. Es una experiencia única probar

la variedad de los sabores de sus comidas étnicas y dejarse llevar

por esa música que inadvertidamente mueve los pies con sus ritmos

pegadizos. Continuando por la Blackwell hacia el suroeste nos recibe

el Parque Hurd, un bellísimo espacio en donde los

residentes de Dover, en especial novias, parejas y

graduados posan para las tradicionales fotos que

queradán inmortalizadas en álbumes familiares.

Desviándonos unas pocas cuadras de su calle

principal hacia el norte, cruzando el caudaloso

Río Rockaway, el Parque JFK, frente a su histórica y

querida biblioteca pública, permite un momento

de calma, interrumpida por el bullicio de los niños

en sus flamantes juegos y el incesante tránsito de

la Ruta 46.

Y si vamos hacia el sur, el Parque Crescent

Field recibe a jóvenes deportistas en todas sus

disciplinas con sus renovadas canchas de fútbol / soccer, fútbol

americano y básquetbol.

My Town of Dover

It has the beauty and the joy you can find in all the colors,

but what prevails in its daily existence is the shine that gives

light to its residents’ daily lives. Those who grew up here love

its streets, its community, its hubbub, and its peace. Those

who just know it

fall in love at first

sight.

Dover is like that:

and special.

Excited and

relaxed at the same

time. To know it is

to love it.

I often ask myself:

Why do I love the Town of Dover this much? Here are some

of the reasons that I found:

When I walk along Blackwell Street, I understand that I am

going through the heart of this town. Traveling this main

street allows us to feel the heartbeat of its population, the one that flies from Morris County toward the entire state

State mindset – all while showing off its diverse, joyous

personality.

Dover’s bustling stores are a mainstay in the daily routine

needed to visit all Latin American countries in just one

ride. Trying the variety of their flavors is a once-in-alifetime

experience to learn the unique taste of their

ethnic foods while our feet move subconsciously to their

catchy music.

Moving on from Blackwell toward the southwest, we are

welcomed by Hurd Park, a beautiful space where Dover

residents, especially brides, couples, and graduates, pose

for traditional photos that will be immortalized in family

albums.

Diverting from its main street toward the north and

crossing the mighty Rockaway River, JFK Park offers a

moment of calm, only interrupted by the bustle of the young kids and the incessant traffic on Route 46.

If we go to the south, Crescent Field Park welcomes athletes of all disciplines with its renewed soccer and football fields

and basketball courts.

Climbing the hill on Prospect Street, we can find the charming beauty of its largest green, Hedden Park. The magnificence

of its vegetation captures us in a very singular way. Listening to its natural silence broken by the whisper of the brooks

while passing through the rocks is absolutely touching.

Dover is a mixture of cultures that represent the historic philosophy of the United States. With the typical American

chance to belong to a place both

dreamed and distinctive.

Their kids are proud members of

the famous Dover Tigers, students

from any of the district’s five schools

who are prepared to represent a

town that will accompany them

wherever they go.

No matter how far away we might

go or what point in the world our

destiny reserves for us, the Town of

Dover is and will always be in our

hearts for the rest of our lives.

The temperatures are starting to cool, but the fall sports

season – for Dover High School and the youth programs all

over the towns – is heating up.

At the high school, the Tigers’ soccer, football, and volleyball

teams continue to work to qualify in the county, sectional,

and state tournament

competitions.

BOYS’ SOCCER

CONTINUES TO ROAR

The boys’ current record is 12-

2. The team started the season

7-0, its best showing in 25 years.

Unfortunately, Hackettstown got

its revenge from the 6-5 Dover

victory in the season opener, with

a 2-1 nailbiter to beat Dover. Dover

standout Santiago Ramirez is leading the team in goals and assists,

with nine each! Dover will have its toughest game of the season yet

when it faces Madison in the quarterfinals of the Morris County

Tournament.

GIRLS’ SOCCER LET THEIR FEET DO THE

TALKING

The current record for the Girls soccer team is 5-5-2. The girls

dominated Warren Tech with a 9-0 win! But they lost in the first

round to a strong West Morris side in the first round of the county

tournament. Michelle Fallas Cabrera is the top scorer, with five goals.

Ana Booth leads the squad with two assists. Dover is getting ready

to play conference rival Highpoint at Dover, which will be a rematch

of an early-season match. Dover needs a win to have a chance to

capture the conference title.

TIGRES EN EL CAMPO DE FÚTBOL AMERICANO

El equipo de fútbol americano de los Tigres, con un récord de 2-5, liderado por el mariscal de campo Henry Soto y el receptor abierto Emilio

Méndez, está trabajando arduamente para conseguir más victorias. Derrotaron a la Escuela Secundaria Morris Hills 28-13; los Tigres tienen una

ventaja de 23-13-1 en esta rivalidad. El equipo sufrió una derrota ante un fuerte equipo de la Escuela Secundaria de Sparta, pero se está preparando

TIGERS ON THE GRIDIRON

The 2-5 Tigers football team, led by quarterback Henry Soto and wide receiver Emilio Mendez, is working hard to find more victories. It topped

Morris Hills High School 28-13; the Tigers hold a 23-13-1 advantage in the rivalry. The team suffered a loss to a strong Sparta High School team but

is preparing to face off against Kittatinny in the last regular season at home. Everyone should be there to cheer on our football team under the

bright “Friday Night Lights.”

VOLLEYBALL TEAM’S ‘NET’ SUCCESS

The current record for the Girls’ volleyball team is 7-7, 7-1 in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference. They swept two matches against Morris

The program, led by Roberto Gonzalez and

his team of qualified coaches, also took over

the Dover Strikers to offer rec-league, travel,

and Elite Development Program (EDP) play to

give players of all abilities a chance to compete

and enjoy the game. The team’s home field

is Crescent Field in Dover, NJ. They practice

once a week and have a game once a week.

They also train at the Dover Sportsplex. The

goal is to offer local youth an accessible and

engaging soccer program as the coaches focus

on building fundamental skills, promoting

teamwork, and having fun for children of all

trade, but thanks to

a professor who saw

his potential, he has become a ceramic artist. Thanks to

Dover Art Week, he turned his art into business.

“My legacy is my art, and it can last a lifetime,” he said.

Rivera showed—and sold—many of his works at the

“Basement Bash,” the final event in “Dover Art Week,” the

seven-day arts and culture festival that celebrated the

creative and performing arts, which are Dover’s heartbeat.

The event kicked off with the Club Colombia

Independence Day Festival on Saturday, July 20. The

Richards Basement was the scene for various events

celebrating the community. The “Basement Bash” raised

$283 for the Dover Educational Foundation.

Liz Terzic Smith, the driving force behind the week’s

events, said, “I am committed to arts events that give

back to the community. These artists in Dover are so

talented and invested in their town. I hope they can see

their potential as artists and small business owners in

town.”

Events included:

“Beyond the Brush”: This networking event, held on July 24, was

a meet-up for artists and creative “makers” that gave everyone the

chance to create pieces of individual art, collaborate on public works

and share their work and thoughts on social media.

Happy Hours: Tequila’s 55, One11, and Tierras y Sabores hosted special

events, such as One11’s “Meet the Artist” session with Marie (@

mariescreativetwist), who created the “Mary Jane” mural at Casa Verde.

Tequila’s 55 featured special performances by Bri’La Flor Dance Studios.

Art in the Park: Eight mural artists painted new murals in a pop-up art

installation at JFK Park. DJ Bizz Nice kept the vibe flowing, and Dover

Scoops Ice Cream Cart offered sweet treats.

Community Mural: Artist Dan Fenelon worked with Dover artists

on a three-panel mural honoring Dover’s rich cultural heritage. Core

Creative Placemaking coordinated the project. The finished mural will

be displayed in the Richards Building.

“This event makes me feel hopeful for the future of art and free

expression,” Fenelon says. “Dover is full of artists and people who

appreciate and support creativity. We can keep this community

activated by art.”

Fenelon’s wife, Katie Dempsey, owns Core Creative Placemaking and is a

strong advocate for the community impact that art can deliver.

“We are thrilled to work with Dover’s arts community,” she said. “It’s

absolutely magical to see art in all its forms of, by, and for the community.

If we can help artists keep creating long enough to see that it can be

their life’s work, and help local businesses see the value in utilizing their

skills, it’s a success.”

Rivera, the ceramic artist, is a perfect example of that. “I work in the

printing department for County College of Morris. Pat Gallagher, an art

professor, kept trying to get me to take his ceramics class. I finally did,

Mayor James P. Dodd was impressed with the event. “This week-long

celebration fosters pride and unity for our community,” he said.

Grupo local rescata perros de Puerto Rico

La vida de Amy Warnock ha girado en torno a los perros, y no lo querría de otra manera.

“He estado involucrada en el rescate de perros por más de 20 años”, dijo la residente de Jefferson Township. Su experiencia incluye

trabajar en el Refugio de Animales Ramapo Bergen en Oakland, la Sociedad Humanitaria de Newark y 11th Hour Rescue en Ledgewood.

“También trabajé para un par de veterinarios, pero siempre regresé a los rescates”, comentó.

“Después de que el Huracán María golpeara [Puerto Rico en 2017], había una abundancia de animales que la gente simplemente abandonaba”,

dijo. “En ese momento estaba trabajando en 11th Hour Rescue, y todos fuimos a Puerto Rico. Por donde miraras, había perros”, comentó,

señalando que en ese momento las autoridades estimaban alrededor de 500,000 perros callejeros, la mayoría sin esterilizar.

“Aún hay más ahora”, añadió.

Usó ese primer viaje en 2018 para ayudar a 11th Hour Rescue a salvar a más de 20 perros. También le inspiró la idea de reducir la

crisis de perros sin hogar en la

isla.

Un año después, Warnock

fundó Save the Satos, el término en español para los perros callejeros. Desde

entonces, su organización

ha rescatado a más de 1,000 perros de Puerto Rico. Ella atribuye el éxito

del grupo a la ayuda de

un pequeño equipo de voluntarios. “Intentamos mantenerlo pequeño,

como una pequeña familia”, comentó sobre los 10 a 15 colaboradores habituales.

Warnock tiene una política de no recibir salario para sí misma y se define como

“estrictamente la fundadora”. El rescate es su misión a tiempo completo y su trabajo

de amor, comentó.

Como esposa y madre de dos niños, no tiene otro trabajo fuera de

la organización.

“No le pago a nadie,

todos somos voluntarios”,

dijo.

El boca a boca y las redes

sociales han ayudado a dar

visibilidad a la organización y también

han jugado un papel en encontrar hogares

temporales y permanentes para “los perros que

siguen llegando”, comentó.

En 2022, Warnock abrió un sitio de adopción

ubicado en un local comercial en el centro

comercial Bowling Green Parkway en la Ruta 15

sur en Jefferson. El lugar puede albergar hasta

12 perros, según las regulaciones del municipio.

“Tener la instalación de adopción nos ha

permitido rescatar a muchos más perros de la

calle”, dijo.

A mediados de junio, Warnock facilitó el

transporte de 9 perros más; siete cachorros

y dos poodles de mediana edad, recientemente

entregados por su dueño.

Dentro de los tres días de su llegada, cinco de

los nueve fueron adoptados, incluyendo a Mila,

una poodle de cinco años. Su nueva dueña, Julie

Guadalupe, hizo un gran esfuerzo para completar la

adopción, tomando un tren y un auto de alquiler desde

la ciudad de Nueva York hasta el centro. Guadalupe

había estado buscando un compañero para su otro

poodle, Canoli, desde mayo. “Creo que se llevarán muy

bien”, comentó después de pasar tiempo con Mila.

Warnock ha cultivado varias asociaciones en Puerto Rico,

incluyendo el grupo de rescate For the Love of Satos, y

varios expatriados que trabajan independientemente en la

Local group rescues dogs from Puerto Rico

Amy Warnock’s life has gone to the dogs. She wouldn’t want it any other way.

“I’ve been involved in rescuing dogs for more than 20 years,” the Jefferson Township

resident said. Her rescue resume includes working at the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge in

Oakland, Newark Humane Society and 11th Hour Rescue in Ledgewood.

“I also worked for a couple of vets but always went back to rescues,” she said.

“After Hurricane Maria hit [Puerto Rico in 2017], there was an abundance of animals that

people just left,” she said. “I was working at 11th Hour Rescue at the time, and we all went

down to Puerto Rico. Everywhere you looked there were dogs,” she said, noting that at

the time, officials estimated about 500,000 stray dogs, most of whom were not spayed or

neutered, were abandoned.

“There are even more now,” she added.

She used that first trip in 2018 to help 11th Hour Rescue save more than 20 dogs. It also

sparked an idea to reduce the island’s homeless canine crisis.

A year later, Warnock founded Save The Satos — Spanish slang for stray dogs. In the time

since, her organization has rescued more than 1,000 dogs from Puerto Rico. She credits the

help of a small team of volunteers with the group’s success. “We try to keep it small like a little family,” she said of the 10-15 regulars who pitch in.

Warnock has a no paycheck policy for herself and identifies as “strictly the founder.” Rescuing is her full-time mission and her labor of love, she said. A

wife and mother of two boys, she does not hold a job outside the organization.

“I don’t pay anybody at all. We are all volunteers,” she said.

Word of mouth and social media have brought attention to the organization and have also played a role in finding foster homes and forever homes for

“the canines that keep coming,” she said.

In 2022, Warnock opened an adoption site located in a storefront in the Bowling Green Parkway shopping center on Route 15 south in Jefferson. The

facility holds up to 12 dogs, as per township regulations.

“Having the adoption facility has allowed us to pull many more dogs off the street,” she said.

In mid-June, Warnock facilitated the transport of nine more dogs: seven puppies taken from the streets, and two mid-age poodles, who were recently

surrendered by their owner.

“I dislike the way some people treat their animals. They do not look at them as family members in the way that I do,” she said.

Within three days of arrival, five of the nine were adopted out, including Mila, a five-year-old poodle. Mila’s new human, Julie Guadalupe, went to great

lengths to complete the adoption, taking a train and a hired car from New York City to the center. Guadalupe had been looking for a companion for her

other poodle, Canoli, since May. “I think they’ll get along great,” she said after spending some time with Mila.

Warnock has cultivated multiple partnerships in Puerto Rico, including the rescue group For the Love of Satos, and several expats, who work independently

on the island. These volunteers earn the trust of street dogs by providing food and water, therefore making it easier to perform a rescue, said Warnock.

Once a month, pooches are transported from San Juan to Newark via a “super expensive” cargo plane provided by AmeriJet International Airlines,

said Warnock. Each transport is limited to five kennels per flight. The size of the dogs — most are puppies — dictates the number of animals being

para amigos de cuatro patas. Su familia — su

esposo es muy paciente, dijo — actualmente

cuida de tres perros adultos.

“Recorremos toda la isla y alquilamos Airbnb

para hospedarnos,” comentó.

Una vez en Nueva Jersey, los perros, que

todos vienen con cierta documentación,

pasan los primeros días en la instalación de

adopción de Save the Satos antes de ir a un

hogar temporal o ser adoptados.

La tarifa de adopción de $500 cubre algunas

de las citas veterinarias que incluyen vacunas

básicas, desparasitación, prevención de la

filariasis canina y esterilización o castración,

si es necesario. Dado que los costos

veterinarios son más bajos en Puerto Rico,

muchos de los perros ya vienen con todas

las vacunas recomendadas y algunos ya

están esterilizados o castrados. Warnock se

ha asociado con el Hospital de Animales de

Denville, que ofrece tarifas con descuento

en algunos procedimientos. “Un hallazgo

raro,” señaló.

Las familias adoptivas son evaluadas a través

de una solicitud en línea y, si son aprobadas,

pueden programar una cita para conocer

a su posible mascota. Tocando madera, las

adopciones van bien, comentó.

La tarifa no cubre el costo total de operación,

para eso están las recaudaciones de fondos.

Después de su primer viaje a Puerto Rico

en 2018, Warnock terminó acogiendo a un

perro de hospicio con un “enorme tumor”

en la parte trasera.

“El veterinario le dio seis meses de vida, y

terminó viviendo de cuatro a cinco años,”

Warnock la apodó cariñosamente Gorda.

para cinco perros de Save the Satos. Jonell

Petrou también trabaja en la socialización

y entrenamiento básico. Se enfrentó a un

desafío con uno de los rescates de junio,

una hembra muy tímida de seis meses que

temblaba de miedo y evitaba el contacto

humano.

marcando la diferencia en la vida de sus

humanos.

Primero adoptó a Marge, que ahora tiene

nueve años. El verano pasado, un cachorro

de Labrador-Schnauzer captó su atención.

“Me enamoré de este pequeño,” comentó

refiriéndose a Reggie, de un año y medio.

El contacto de Duarte con Save the Satos no

terminó con las adopciones. Al mantenerse

en contacto con Warnock, pronto se

encontró como voluntaria en el centro de

adopción, pasando aproximadamente seis

horas a la semana ordenando y socializando

a los perros.

Duarte también asiste a eventos de adopción

fuera del sitio, como el más reciente en

Roosters Coffee House en Ledgewood, que

resultó en siete perros encontrando su hogar

definitivo.

“Hay muchos refugios excelentes en esta

área, pero nadie nos conoce,” comentó.

Warnock estuvo de acuerdo.

“Realmente queremos difundir la palabra,”

comentó.

transport of two dogs and seven pups cost

$1,200. Transportation fees are paid for mostly by

fundraising and also a part of the adoption fees,

she said.

In the rare occasion there are a large number

of dogs being delivered, the transport stops in

Miami, where the dogs are met and driven to

New Jersey by volunteers from multiple rescue

organizations.

Warnock not only operates the organization

but has also found herself playing foster to

four-legged friends, as well. Her family — her

husband, Michael, is very patient, she said — is

currently providing TLC to three adult dogs.

Their sons, Jackson, 9, and Hunter, 13, are a built-in,

kid-friendly foster system that awards dogs the

“great with kids” checkmark in their description.

“My kids love this,” she said.

The organization’s website provides a detailed

description of each dog’s personality and

compatibility.

great with other dogs, and is friendly towards

Warnock and a handful of friends and fellow

rescuers travel to Puerto Rico for rescue missions

every three to four months, usually staying

anywhere from seven to 10 days, she said. She

connects with her contacts on the island prior to

each journey, ensuring a successful trip.

“We travel around the whole island and set up

Airbnbs to stay at,” she said.

Once in New Jersey, the dogs, that all come with

some documentation, spend the first few days at

Take Sarah Olsen Petrou and her wife, Jonelle Petrou, from Jefferson. The couple regularly volunteers

at the center and has fostered and found homes for five Save the Satos dogs. Jonelle Petrou also

works on socialization and basic training. She met a challenge with one of the June rescues, a very shy

six-month-old female that shook with fear and evaded human contact.

Save the Satos canines continue to make a difference in the lives of their humans.

Just ask repeat adopter, Veronica Duarte of Netcong. Duarte discovered the organization through

petfinder.com.

She first adopted Marge, now nine years old. Last summer, a Labrador-Schnauzer puppy caught her

eye.

“I fell in love with this little guy,” she said, referring to 18-month-old Reggie.

Duarte’s contact with Save the Satos didn’t stop with adoptions. In keeping in touch with Warnock,

she soon found herself volunteering at the adoption center, typically spending about 6 hours a week

tidying up and socializing the dogs.

“These are strays and they’re not used to being around people or they’re used to being treated badly,”

she said.

Duarte also assists with off-site adoption events like the most recent one at Roosters Coffee House

in Ledgewood, which landed seven dogs their forever homes.

“There are so many great shelters in this area but nobody knows about us,” she said.

Warnock agreed.

“We really want to get the word out,” she said.

the Save the Satos adoption facility before going

to a foster home or being adopted.

The $500 adoption fee reflects some of

the veterinarian appointments that include

core vaccinations, de-worming, heartworm

prevention, or spaying and neutering, if necessary.

Since vet costs are cheaper in Puerto Rico,

many of the dogs come with all recommended

vaccinations and some are already spayed or

neutered. Warnock has partnered with Denville

Animal Hospital, which offers a discounted rate

on some procedures. “A rare find,” she noted.

Forever families are vetted through an online

application and, if approved, can schedule a time

to meet their potential pet.

“Knock wood, adoptions are good,” she said.

The fee, however, does not cover the total cost

of operating; that’s where fundraising comes in,

she said.

After her first trip to Puerto Rico in 2018,

Warnock wound up taking in a hospice foster

with an “enormous growth” on her hind end.

“The vet gave her six months to live, and she

wound up living four to five years,” she said.

She was named, Floca — meaning skinny in

Spanish and after gaining weight and filling out,

Warnock jokingly referred to her as Gorda —

which translates into fat.

In continuing to rescue dogs from the island,

Warnock hopes to “make a dent” in decreasing

the population [in Puerto Rico],” she said.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Warnock’s small army

of volunteers is at the ready as soon as new

rescues land at Newark, pitching in with bathing,

feeding, walking and loving.

For the second straight year, the Dover

Police Department helped young people

federal officers and leaders, who shared what

it takes to become a member of the force.

The free week-long event also featured

demonstrations by specialists and gave kids a

chance to take field trips.

LA HISTORIA DE MILLER ROFF

Un artículo destacado en la edición dominical del “Daily Advance” el

26 de noviembre de 1978 capturó los recuerdos de Miller Roff, un

Dover Rekindles News Legacy

The new headquarters is once again ‘making

news’ – for the first time in more than a century.

The Dover Area Historical Society welcomes DoverNOW, the

new magazine located at 7 North Sussex Street. We are proud to

welcome it back. Yes, you read that right! Welcome back…

Dover has a long history of news publications, at least 14. Many of you

may remember some of them. The new home of DoverNOW was once

home to “The Iron Era,” founded by Benjamin Vogt, was one of Dover’s

first and most successful newspapers. It is believed to have first been

published in 1870. The earliest available issue, archived online at the

Rockaway Township Library, is dated Jan. 27, 1872. According to Harry R.

Gill in Charles D. Platt’s Dover Dates, “Iron Era” Editor Gibson was once

the best newspaperman in New Jersey.

‘IRON ERA’ ROOTS

The “Era,” as town residents called it, was published weekly on

Saturdays until 1907, when it was then published on Fridays. It provided

an interesting look at the town’s weekly life – news about church life,

mining, mills, railroad, and agricultural issues. It often called for civic

The “Dover Harry R. Gil Enterprise” was

the first paper in

town. It was first

published on April 1st, 1869, published by Edward L. Dickerson and Frank

N. Lindsley in the Dickerson building on East Blackwell Street. It printed

weekly until June 1, 1870, when it was taken over by W.J. Bruce, who

changed the name to “The Dover Mail.”

In 1875, the “Dover Index” was founded by Francis F. Hummel and

Lorenzo D. Tillyer to fill the void when the “Dover Mail” ceased

publication.

Some papers during this period had a political slant. The “Era” was the

Republican voice, while the “Index” represented the Democratic voice.

In 1890, The “Morris County Journal,” one of the few prohibition papers

in New Jersey. The first editor was James S. Bradbrook, a Free Methodist

preacher, who initially published the “Journal” in the Alexander Sighton

Here are some highlights from this

once-thriving media metropolis:

• Gill founded the “Dover Advance”

in 1903. Each issue sold for two cents.

At a foreclosure sale in May 1914, he

absorbed “Era” and its plant into the

“Dover Advance.” Robert T. Kelly shared what it was like being a “Dover

Advance” boy in the 1930s:

“This was the first business experience for many Dover boys. They

would buy papers for two cents, selling them for three cents, gambling

on how many to purchase.” He would purchase the papers early in the

morning before going to school although they were not printed yet,

and was given a number for his place in line when he picked up the

papers later that day. Kelly said he sold about 60 papers a week over

the two distribution days. The 60-cent profit allowed him to enjoy

“three movies and a couple of candy bars at the Playhouse.”

• A quote from Harry R. Gill, founder of the “Dover Advance” wrote,

“We have been told that “a man is known by the company he keeps,”

and in a great measure, we have come to learn that a town is judged

by the newspapers it supports.”

THE STORY OF MILLER ROFF

A feature article in the Sunday edition of the “Daily Advance” on Nov.

26, 1978, captured the memories of Miller Roff, a lifetime resident of

Dover. At the time of the interview, the 85-year-old said, “I think I’m

the oldest living native of Dover.”

Roff started his newspaper career in 1908. He worked his way up from

a “printer’s devil”—another term for a handyman—to eventually

become an editor for the “Dover Advance” and other local papers. He

said the paper usually had only light news but gained wider attention

after its reporting on the devastating 1926 explosion at the Picatinny

Arsenal.

“The ‘Advance’ was the first one to get that printed,” Roff said. “You

see, I was a representative of the Associated Press and I called the

news in. The ‘Newark News’ ran a little thing because they were

already printing.”

Roff said he left his job at the “Daily Advance,” which paid $3 a week,

to work for the “Dover Index” and the “Era.” Roff, who also worked on

other Lakeland area newspapers, stated proudly, “I was the only editor

in New Jersey without a high school diploma.”

REPRESENTING A NEW GENERATION

The first Spanish newspaper published in Dover was ‘The Town

News’/’El Voceror del Pueblo’ by Francisoco de Jesus, Javier Marin,

Enrique Roibal and Oscar Alcaron and Virginian Caceres editor. ‘El

Voceror’ was published for 4 or five months. Carlos Caprioli took

over the publication when they decided to discontinue renaming the

paper ‘Vocero Latino’. ‘The newspaper “set out to tell the stories of

the Hispanic immigrants and keep them in touch with news from their

many homelands.” ‘Vocero Latino’ started as a free newsletter with a

circulation of 5,000 and progressed to a monthly newspaper with a

circulation of 10,000. Caprioli stated that “I’m trying to publish a Latin

American newspaper. As the name says, “It’s Latino.” It belongs to

the “whole Latino population.” The publication was in circulation for

five years and filled a need in the Dover community. Additional Spanish

newspapers followed: ‘Nuestra Communicad’ (2005-2006) and ‘Latino

News’ (2006-2010).

options that save us money and time and taste pretty good. But what

if we gave you the recipe for less expensive, tastier, and healthier

versions of your favorite foods that you love? Here’s what you need:

your favorite grocery store, an hour or less in the kitchen, and family

and friends to enjoy a home-cooked meal together. First up? The DIY

burrito bowl:

Serves: 4-5 hearty portions

Cost/serving: less than $5

Approx Prep/Cooking Time: 1 hour (or less!)

CREATE YOUR BURRITO BOWLS:

1. Start burrito bowl with a cilantro-lime brown rice base.

2. Add black beans over rice.

3. Add chopped chicken thighs over beans.

4. Top with fresh pico de gallo.

5. Drizzle avocado crema to your liking.

Cook rice first.

While the rice is cooking, season chicken thighs.

hint: One bunch of cilantro should yield ¼ cup cilantro for rice, ¼ cup

cilantro for pico de gallo, use rest for avocado crema.

PRO TIPS: Food processor saves chopping time. Wash dishes as you

cook to stay ahead of mess!

VEGETARIAN OPTION: Use veggie stock when cooking rice;

obviously, omit the chicken from the recipe. Tofu is a great replacement

(use same seasoning).

FOOD PREPARATION:

Cilantro-Lime Brown Rice

Time: 40 minutes (or less)

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups of basmati brown rice

Chicken or vegetable stock

Juice of 1 lime

¼ cup fresh cilantro

Salt to taste

Instructions:

1. Rinse and cook rice according to packaging, using low-sodium

chicken/vegetable stock as liquid. Pour recommended ratio from

package.

2. Bring water/stock to a boil, pour in rice, cook on low-medium heat

for about 30 minutes.

3. After rice is done cooking, mix rice with fresh lime juice and fresh

cilantro (salt to taste).

B. Black Beans

Ingredients:

29 oz. can black beans

½ teaspoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons olive oil

½ teaspoon cumin

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Drain beans over the sink; do not rinse.

2. In a pan, add olive oil, drained black beans, garlic powder, cumin

powder, salt and pepper to taste.

3. Stir it all around and cook for about 3 minutes on medium heat.

C. Chipotle Adobo Chicken Thighs

Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

1 ½ pounds of skinless and boneless chicken thighs

1 tablespoon of canned chipotle adobo sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon oregano

1 teaspoon ancho chile powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Combine all spices and adobo sauce in a bowl.

2. Rub the spice mix you just mixed on chicken thighs until well-coated.

3. Choose your method of cooking:

Skillet: cook for 6 minutes on each side until brown (internal temp:

165F).

Air fryer: Preheat to 400F, place thighs on single layer for 15 minutes

total (flip halfway through)

4. Let it cool, then slice.

D. Pico de Gallo

Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

4 large tomatoes

1 small onion

½ cup fresh cilantro

Squeeze of lime juice

1 jalapeno (optional)

Instructions:

1. Dice tomatoes and onion. Chop cilantro. Cut jalapeno in half, remove

seeds, and chop finely.

2. Mix chopped vegetables with fresh lime juice.

3. Add salt to taste.

E. Avocado Crema Preparation

Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

2 ripe, peeled, and pitted avocados

½ cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt

Optional (to taste): 1 clove garlic; squeeze of lime, remaining chopped

cilantro

Salt to taste

Instructions:

1. Place ingredients in blender; blend until smooth.
