Scientists classify diamonds into two main “types” – type I and type II – based on the

presence or absence of nitrogen which can replace carbon atoms in a diamond’s atomic

structure. These two diamond types can be distinguished based on differences in their

chemical and physical properties. Type II diamonds contain little if any nitrogen and they

are subdivided into two groups (IIa and IIb) both of which are quite rare

(less than 2% of all gem diamonds).

THAT MATTER

Jake Meredith

Ronald McDonald House Charities ® of San Diego provides a “home away from

home” to families with children being treated for serious, often life-threatening

conditions at local hospitals. Through temporary lodging, meals, and more, it

touches the lives of more than 15,000 people a year.

Three years ago, Jake Meredith was hospitalized for extreme pain and infection.

Then he had the biggest medical scare of his life: a pulmonary embolism,

followed by two heart attacks. In this traumatic time, parents Travis and Erin

took turns at Jacob’s side and with their three other sons at San Diego’s

Ronald McDonald House.

For the Merediths, the House was a place where they could heal while helping

their son recover. While Jake is now doing well, the memory of nearly losing their

son is still vivid. They count moments together as precious.

Give to help families stay together for the moments that matter

“At the Ronald McDonald House, I could snuggle with my sons

and begin to heal as my husband helped Jake heal at the

hospital. This place is truly a gift.” – Erin Meredith

About San Diego

BOB DALE’S MYSTERIOUS

HOLIDAY BOOZE CANDY

BY KEN KRAMER

I

remember a buzz of

excitement racing through

the newsroom at NBC 7 in

2001. A Holiday package had

arrived for Bob Dale with

no return address. Longtime

employees knew what was

inside, and so did Bob.

A little background: Bob Dale

was a television icon in San

Diego for most of a half century. He was the

afternoon movie host on KFMB Channel 8,

whose crafty interviews could humanize the

most insufferable prima donna and bring out

the best in Don Rickles. For a time in the 1960s

his Zoorama broadcast from the San Diego

Zoo on CBS-TV was seen by over 16 million

viewers a week.

I got to know Bob in the 1990s when we were both

working at NBC 7, where he had already become

the station’s beloved weatherman for two decades. If

meteorological conditions were benign, there might be

time for the audience to be gifted with a little bit oWf

wisdom or a show business recollection from Bob Dale,

and there was nobody better. He was a genuinely genial

genius of a storyteller, especially at Christmastime when

every year the mystery package would arrive.

It all began, he said, sometime in the late 1960s when he

got a phone call at Channel 8. The man on the other end

simply asked, “Hey Dale, you want some booze balls?”

“Ok,” he replied, “but who is this?” In a gruff voice the

caller barked, “none of your business.” A few days later a

package arrived containing foil wrapped chocolate candy

crème balls that Bob would describe as “chrome plated

hand grenades” soaked in liquor and incredibly delicious.

Not realizing their spiritous potency, he opened the

8 GBSAN.COM | DECEMBER 2024

box live on air, passed them around

the anchor desk and bit into one. “I

began sweating and loosened my tie.”

He remembers everyone on set was

laughing.

Thus began a tradition. Each year at

Channel 8 and thereafter at NBC 7, the

booze balls arrived with

nary a clue as to who was

sending them, and every

year he would tell the story

and bite into one live on the

air to the delight of viewers.

Until one year when the

box arrived, but this time a

note was enclosed. He read

it aloud:

“Dear Bob, you will never know how much joy your

gruff-voiced friend received from sending you the

special Christmas candies. He just recently passed away.

One of the last things he said was ‘Make sure Dale gets

his booze balls.’”

Thinking back, I cannot imagine there was a dry eye in

the city. Bob Dale closed the card, looked into the camera

and seemed to be genuinely moved. He knew he worked

in a newsroom where the investigative staff could have

figured out who had been sending the package all those

years and would continue to for a half dozen more. But

he told his audience he would never do that. “You know

why?” he said. “Because it’s none of my business.”

Give

a local child

in foster care a Voice

Children who have been abused and neglected deserve the

opportunity to thrive

Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers provide comfort & joy.

Children enter foster care because they have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. The

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) model empowers trained volunteers to advocate

for the needs of children and help judges make the most informed decisions for children’s

futures. In San Diego County, Voices for Children is the only nonprofit organization designated

by the courts to train and support CASA volunteers for children living in foster care.

With the support of a CASA from Voices for Children, a child is more likely to receive essential

services, and find a safe, permanent home. Over time, a CASA often becomes the most

consistent adult in a child's life— someone the child knows they can count on.

You can help contribute to providing safety and stability for these vulnerable children.

With a gift this holiday season, you will help us recruit, train, and support more volunteers

who advocate for the best interest of children and ensure their needs are being met. Your

donation is tax deductible and can be securely made online.

Join us in making a lasting impact on the lives of these children

in need. Donate today to support local youth in foster care.

Holidays

The Magic Of Christmas

F

or 20

years,

Old Town

Trolley has brought the magic of Christmas to

children living at Father Joe’s Villages, creating an

unforgettable holiday experience filled with joy and

love. Each December, the Old Town Trolley team takes

special care selecting gifts for each child, preparing a

celebration that is truly enchanting.

Even amid the pandemic, Old Town Trolley’s

dedication never wavered. Unable to host the

traditional Old Town celebration, they brought the

festivities directly to Father Joe’s Villages. Santa and

Mrs. Claus arrived in style, surprising the children and

filling their hearts with holiday cheer. This unwavering

commitment ensured that, even in difficult times, the

children experienced the joy and magic of the season.

On the day of the event, the children board a special

holiday trolley at the Village, decked out with festive

decor and holiday cheer. They are whisked away to

Old Town for a magical Christmas party where Mr. and

Mrs. Claus

await,

welcoming

them with

open arms

and bright

smiles.

The entire

event is a

wonderland

for these young ones, filled with laughter, music, delicious

food, games, and, of course, gifts that bring joy and

wonder.

The dedication and heartfelt generosity of the Old

Town Trolley team make this event truly exceptional.

Special thanks go to General Manager David Thornton

and Operations & Property Manager Victor Santana,

whose efforts ensure that every detail is perfect, year

after year. This long-standing partnership exemplifies

the spirit of the holiday season and underscores the

power of community and compassion.

Old Town Trolley’s commitment to creating a magical

holiday experience brings immeasurable joy to the

children at Father Joe’s Villages, reminding us all of

the importance of kindness and giving back. We are

profoundly grateful for their partnership and look

forward to many more years of holiday cheer together.

RADY

CHILDREN S

70 Years

of Growing Up

San Diego

Rady Children’s Archive Photography

In 1954 Rady Children’s

began as a small, one-story

building constructed in a

Kearny Mesa pasture. It had

just 58 beds and 13 patients

on the first day of operation,

many of whom were

recovering from polio.

As the population grew and the city evolved,

Rady Children’s and San Diego grew up

together. From a quiet beachside town, San

Diego became a thriving city and international

tourist destination. As more families moved to

the area, Rady Children’s expanded its services

to meet the needs of the community, today

providing care to more than 270,000 children

every year.

The hospital’s generous donors have been critically important

to our success over the past 70 years. It all started with the

hospital’s original fundraisers, the Auxiliary and the Kiwanis

Club, who raised enough money to break ground on that first

building. Since then, transformative gifts have helped to fund

the pioneering of Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic

Medicine, groundbreaking approaches to mental and

behavioral health, and our latest project: a seven-story,

500,000 square foot Intensive Care Unit and Emergency

Services Pavilion.

All these projects and initiatives are guided by one question:

what will best meet the needs of the community we serve?

As we celebrate 70 years of growing up alongside San Diego,

we are reminded that none of this progress would have been

possible without the support of our community. From the very

beginning, your generosity has fueled our ability to innovate

and expand, ensuring that every child receives the best care

possible. We've been here for seven decades, and with your

continued support, we'll be here for many more.

SCAN

TO SUPPORT

Together, we can shape the future of pediatric care and

continue to provide hope and healing for the children who

need us most. Thank you for being a part of our journey.

Please continue to stand with us for the future of kids in our

community.

Education

National University:

Legacy and Impact

National University

Since its founding over 53 years ago,

National University (NU) has nurtured

deep connections to the San Diego

community, providing accessible

and flexible education tailored to the

unique needs of active-duty service

members, Veterans, and working adults.

Established in 1971 by retired U.S. Navy Captain Dr.

David Chigos, NU was created to fill an educational

void for military-affiliated and non-traditional

students who needed a university that understood their

challenges. What began in San Diego as a regional

institution has grown to be one of the largest private,

nonprofit universities in the United States, recognized

as both a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and a

Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).

Today, NU’s reach extends nationwide, with over

50,000 degree-seeking students and 80,000 workforce

and professional development learners each year. The

university has a growing number of alumni with more

than 240,000 graduates, many of whom have gone on to

successful careers in fields such as business, education,

healthcare, cybersecurity, law, and criminal justice.

30 GBSAN.COM | DECEMBER 2024

President and CEO Dr. Mark

D. Milliron emphasizes NU’s

commitment to a holistic

approach to education, sharing

with GB Magazine, “We

understand how to meet nontraditional

students where they

are and get them on the pathway

to possibilities personally and

professionally. We are committed

to helping them change their

lives, improve the future of their

families, and positively impact

their communities.”

funds to help students

transform their lives and

Foundation focuses on three

main areas: scholarships for

non-traditional, working,

and military students;

targeted academic programs

that align with high-growth

industries; and funding for

innovative pilot programs

designed to address the

challenges faced by NU’s

diverse student population.

This philosophy advances NU’s commitment to Whole

Human Education by providing financial, emotional,

career, and family support services to ensure that nontraditional

students can thrive despite the complexities

of work, family, and life responsibilities. Most NU

students are working adults, with families and include a

significant number of first-generation college students.

Approximately two-thirds of NU students and graduates

identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color, and

50% of undergraduates are military-affiliated. NU has

been designated a Gold status Military Friendly School

and a Top 10 Military Friendly Spouse School for the

year 2024 by Military Friendly.

In July, more than 600 prestigious members of the San

vice president of community engagement at National

University. “This annual event will continue to highlight

the university’s ongoing legacy to support its students,

with funds raised benefiting scholarships and programs

As National University embarks on its next chapter,

it remains deeply committed to its founding mission.

Health

Reconnecting

as a Family

CHAMPIONS FOR HEALTH MAKES IT POSSIBLE

P

arents care for their

children so that their

children’s lives can

be better than their

own. When the child

becomes the parent’s

caretaker, parents feel

guilty about being a

burden. Their very

young children are

stepping into adult

roles such as cleaning,

cooking, caring for

siblings, and even

helping parents at

work when they are

physically unable.

Champions for Health

(CFH) staff identified

this additional burden that lack of access to specialty

medical care places not only on adults seeking

services, but also on their children and grandchildren.

Funded by the Conrad

Prebys Foundation

in July 2024, CFH

began implementing

“Supporting the

Emotional Well-Being

of Youth Caregivers

and their Families,”

an in-home emotional

well-being curriculum

serving youth ages

6 – 26. The program’s

goals are to improve

communication

among family

members, to improve

understanding of the

impacts of chronic

health needs, and to

increase the youth’s

ability to identify their

cultural and related

strengths for improved

emotional well-being.

Using sensory and

cultural activities,

Dr. Itahi Arteaga

family members

relearn how to

connect with each other. Dr. Itahi Arteaga, a bilingual/

bicultural Occupational Therapist, delivers the

program. “I let the families know, I am a guest,” says

Itahi. “I give you tools that you might already have

and that you can

use in times when

you may not have

recognized they

were yours.” First,

youth and parents

discuss their

needs, strengths,

and concerns as

a family. Each

session consists of

a sensory activity,

psychoeducation,

and time for

connection and

discussion. For

example, family

members smell

scented candles

and guess the

scents. Each note

their own and

others’ reaction

- one person

loves the scent,

another thinks

it is too strong,

and another

person sneezes!

The family talks

about how the

environment

may impact each of

them differently. Youth

identify what sensory

activities may soothe

them and how to access

that information for

grounding and selfcare

during stressful

situations.

Service recipient

Nancy M

Early information from

participants shows that

they are thankful for the in-home services and the

ability to be together and learn as a family. When

asked about any coping skills learned, one youth

reports, “I found a new breathing strategy, in which

I put my hand

up and I use my

other hand to trace

my finger. As I’m

going up with my

finger I breathe

in, and as I go

down, I breathe

out.” When asked

about connection

to family, one

respondent stated,

“Yes, I feel more

connected because

every session

we have a good

laugh.” Another

responded, “Being

together and doing

exercises to calm

ourselves together,

and playing

loteria connected

us like before.

The program

helps the family

understand that

we can be together

and happy,

doing things

that improve our

relationship.”

to respond to concerns

raised by the youth

or family, including

Leadership

Karla Torosian

LEADING REDBONE RECRUITING IN PURPOSE-DRIVEN HIRING

BY: NICHOLE NAOUM

Karla Torosian

Karla Torosian, CEO of Redbone

Recruiting, has brought a fresh

approach to the recruitment industry

by putting people and purpose at

the center of her company’s work.

Redbone Recruiting in not just

about filling vacancies; it is about

connecting talent with organizations that prioritize

equity, inclusion, and meaningful impact. Under

Karla’s leadership, Redbone has become known

38 GBSAN.COM | DECEMBER 2024

for its commitment to sustainable growth, helping

organizations build inclusive, people-centered cultures

from the inside out.

Karla founded Redbone Recruiting with the belief

that recruitment could do more than simply meet

headcount needs. Instead, she envisioned it as a

platform for fostering community engagement,

mentorship, and nonprofit partnerships. This

approach has led to a unique process that not

only serves the hiring needs of mission-driven

organizations but

also supports

candidates in

finding positions

where they can

grow, thrive,

and make a

difference.

Redbone’s

approach is

simple: they look

beyond resumes,

connecting with

candidates and

understanding

the impact they

want to make

so they can help

them find roles that

align with their

values and goals.

Karla and Tonya

Torosian with their son

This philosophy

also shapes how

Redbone works

with organizations.

Recently, an

organization

approached

Redbone to help

fill an HR Director

position. However,

as the discussions

unfolded, it became

clear that this organization was looking for something

more transformational - a leader who could redefine the

employee experience and infuse a values-driven culture

throughout the organization. Rather than simply placing

a candidate in the existing role, Karla’s team helped

them envision a broader, more impactful position: a

People, Culture, and Training Manager. This new role

encompassed culture-building, employee engagement,

and talent growth, reflecting a shift toward a more

holistic approach to people-centered practices. Within

just a month, Redbone was able to help this organization

identify a strong candidate who was not only qualified

but also passionate about this vision, filling a role that

had been open for nearly a year.

Karla Torosian

in Sorrento

Karla’s

commitment

to creating a

consultative,

collaborative

hiring process

is at the core

of what makes

Redbone unique.

She and her team

work alongside

nonprofit

leadership

to fully

understand each

organization’s

goals, tailoring

hiring efforts

to help them

build vibrant,

purpose-driven

workplaces. “We

prioritize people

over placements.

Our success is

measured by the

impact we make

- empowering

candidates,

advancing careers,

and strengthening

the organizations

we serve,” Karla

shared with

GB Magazine. This dedication ensures that both

employers and candidates are set up for success from

day one, creating teams that work cohesively toward

shared values and missions.

For Karla and her team, the ultimate goal is more than

matching talent with organizations. Redbone Recruiting’s

focus on empowering people through purpose-driven

hiring has cemented its reputation as a valuable partner

in the nonprofit world and beyond. Through every

thoughtful hire, Karla Torosian is helping reshape the

way organizations build and sustain inclusive, impactful

teams, ensuring they not only grow but thrive in ways

that make a difference.

Exploring San Diego’s Tidepools

With WILDCOAST

BY: SAM CAMPBELL

WILDCOAST on La Jolla Shores

San Diego’s

stunning coastline

offers a unique

opportunity to

explore a rich

diversity of

marine wildlife

without even needing to get in

the water. During extreme low

tides or minus tides that occur

in fall and early winter, the

ocean recedes, revealing a series

of rocky, shallow pools filled

with an impressive variety of

intertidal species. Minus tides

provide beachgoers easy access

to experience marine life up

close – a glimpse into the hidden

wonders of the ocean.

Our California Marine

Protected Areas (MPAs) or

underwater parks are home

to San Diego’s best places to

tidepool. On the reefs around

Swami’s in Encinitas, La Jolla,

and Sunset Cliffs in Point

Loma, you will find a diversity

of wild marine life such as sea

anemones, hermit crabs, sea

stars, lobsters, octopuses and

so much more, all thriving

in these delicate, yet often

overlooked habitats.

Many sea creatures in the

intertidal zone are specially

adapted to survive the constant

change of environment that

occurs as tides come and go.

these same

make

tidepools

Trampling,

can disturb

these fragile

habitats and lead

to long-term

While tidepools

make it easy to

connect with the

ocean, they also

require careful,

respectful

exploration

to remain

intact. That is

why the ocean

conservation

group

WILDCOAST, has established a Tidepool

Ambassadors program, an outreach initiative dedicated

to educating people on responsible tidepooling

practices and the importance of conserving intertidal

ecosystems.

By setting up informational stations and signage at

popular locations, the program encourages people

to explore tidepools in a way that preserves their

beauty and biodiversity. WILDCOAST staff members

share tidepooling etiquette, guiding visitors to tread

California Two-Spot Octopus

lightly, leave

marine life

undisturbed,

and refrain

from taking

any shells

or animals

from these

areas.

By

equipping

visitors with

knowledge

and respect

for tidepools,

the program is

helping ensure

that everyone

can enjoy

these natural

spaces without

causing harm

and that future

generations can

experience them

too.

Programs such

as the Tidepool

Ambassadors

remind us of

the important

role we all play in conserving these oceanic wonders.

WILDCOAST and its ambassadors demonstrate that

with education and responsible exploration, everyone

can play a part in protecting Southern California’s

coastal treasures.

WILDCOAST invites you to join us north of the

Scripps Pier during the December and January minus

tides to experience tidepools and meet the Tidepool

Ambassadors working to protect them.

Empowerment

Girl Scouts San Diego

EMPOWERING CREATIVE LEADERS

Opportunities for artistic selfexpression

are dwindling in

today’s schools, making it harder

for kids to develop a strong sense

of self and navigate the world.

Girl Scouts San Diego (GSSD)

recognizes the transformative

power of creativity and is committed to providing safe,

inclusive spaces for girls to explore their individuality

and grow through the arts. At the organization’s Camp

Winacka in Julian, the Arts and Crafts Building has

been a beloved creative haven for Girl Scouts since

the 1980s. Here, girls of all backgrounds discover

their artistic spark through collaborative projects

like painting, pottery, murals, and more. Now in

need of critical repairs, this building is the focus of

a campaign to restore its role as a vibrant hub for

artistic self-expression and an essential space that

cultivates confidence and independence.

Daisy Flint, a Gold Award Girl Scout alum and Girl

Scout Lifetime Member, is a shining example of the

impact that spaces like this have on youth. “For me,

art has been a lifeline - a powerful outlet to express

myself and build my identity,” says Flint. “Growing up,

I moved frequently, but Girl Scouts was my constant

source of community and belonging. And at Girl

58 GBSAN.COM | DECEMBER 2024

Scout Camp, I could dive into my passion for art while

creating lifelong friendships. Art gave me the courage

to step outside my comfort zone and shaped the leader

I am today.”

Inspired by her

own experience,

Flint’s Girl

Scout Gold

Award project

- the highest

achievement in

Girl Scouting

- focused on

restoring art

programs in local

schools. Working

with fourth-grade

students, she

created an

adaptable art

curriculum

for adults to

implement so

young people

could once

again find

joy in selfexpression.

“It was

important for

me to have

that outlet,

and it was

devastating

to see schools

take that away,” Flint reflects. “Restoring those

programs felt vital to me because they had such

a positive impact on my well-being and mental

health, especially during tough times. Watching

fourth graders fearlessly color outside the lines and

connect with each other reminded me of art’s true

magic: there are no rights or wrongs, just freedom.”

The Arts and Crafts Building at Camp Winacka is

more than a place to make art- it is a space where girls

explore who they are, develop courage, and grow their

leadership skills.

“Art connects

people, especially

those who may

be introverted or

shy. It provides

a way to express

themselves and

find connection,”

Flint shares.

“This aligns with

Girl Scouts’ core

values. Having

spaces like this

foster growth in

leadership

and personal

development,

which are key

steppingstones

towards Girl

Scouting’s

Highest

Awards.”

GSSD is

dedicated to

preserving

spaces of

inspiration

and

belonging.

Flint’s story

shows that art is a powerful tool for self-expression,

personal growth, and leadership development,

which are all at the heart of the Girl Scout mission.

Together with its community of champions, Girl

Scouts San Diego is empowering the next generation

of girls to embrace their creativity, build lasting

friendships, and cultivate the courage to lead.

Promises2Kids

Brothers

and sisters

entering

foster care,

unfortunately,

are very likely

to be split up

and live in separate homes.

Camp Connect, one of

the critical programs

offered by local nonprofit,

Promises2Kids, reunites

those brothers and sisters

through monthly events

and an annual summer

camp. Promises2Kids is

dedicated to creating a

brighter future for foster

children in San Diego

by providing the hope,

support, and opportunities

they need to change their

lives for the better.

Camp Connect recently held its annual “Roar and

Snore” overnight at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

This event is one of the highlights of the year

because overnights are a chance for siblings to

spend extra time together.

Rubin (12) and Ayla (8) entered care in 2022 due

to severe abuse and neglect. They were regulars at

Camp Connect monthly events, but since April of

this year, other obligations like extracurriculars

have made it hard to get together.

This was a special weekend though. Rubin was

still able to make his football game and join his

sister at the park. Anxious to see Rubin after so

long, Ayla continued asking when her brother

would arrive and was told he would be there

after his football game. Ayla,

always looked up to her

brother, and was shocked to

learn that he even played

football.

She was very impressed

with him and jokingly asked

when he was going pro. They

caught up on each other’s

lives very quickly and set

about exploring the park

with the other campers.

After private guided tours

and encountering rhinos,

antelopes, cheetahs, and

more, the group headed to

the exclusive campground

and settled in at a big

campfire complimented by

s’mores and hot chocolate.

When it was time for bed in

their tents, Rubin assured and promised Ayla that

she would see him again as soon as they woke up,

a promise he emphatically knew he could keep.

The following morning after a big breakfast,

a private tram ride, and seeing more wildlife,

it was time for hugs and goodbyes. Rubin

and Ayla, along with many other siblings in

attendance expressed their gratitude for an

exciting weekend that was full of creating new

memories with each other.

Beyond the evening’s sparkle,

“THE Party in the Park” also

from 17,000-square-feet

just additional space, the

expansion is an opportunity

for the Museum to reimage

the entire Museum - creating

A cornerstone of this

Soaring into History

DISCOVERING DA VINCI’S FIRST FLIGHT

Da Vinci’s First Flight

The world has long been captivated

by Leonardo da Vinci’s remarkable

inventions and insatiable curiosity.

Now, this fascination takes flight in a

groundbreaking exhibition titled Da

Vinci’s First Flight, presented by the

Artisans of Florence, on behalf of the

Museum of Leonardo da Vinci.

Set to make its world premiere in February 2025 at

the San Diego Air & Space Museum, this immersive

experience invites visitors to explore the incredible

story of Zoroastro of Peretola, the young apprentice

who may have been the first test pilot for one of Da

Vinci’s legendary flying machines.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is celebrated not just as

an artist, but as a visionary thinker who meticulously

studied the principles of flight. His investigations

encompassed the soaring grace of birds, the intricacies

of bats, and even the delicate mechanics of dragonflies.

His notebooks are filled with sketches and theories on

aerodynamics and human flight, showcasing designs that

were centuries ahead of their time. But did Leonardo ever

bring his dreams of flight to life?

The narrative of Da Vinci’s First Flight begins in 1503,

when Leonardo met Zoroastro, a spirited young man

who would become his apprentice. Historical records

hint at a secretive plan devised by Leonardo to build and

test one of his remarkable flying machines. Yet, following

the proposed flight, historical documentation about

Zoroastro’s flight vanishes. This tantalizing gap in the

story left scholars puzzled for centuries. The mystery of

Zoroastro’s fate remained unsolved until recently.

In 2018, the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence

received a tip about a local historian in Peretola who had

been gathering original documents and accounts related

to Zoroastro. This revelation opened new avenues for

research, reigniting hope that the enigmatic story of Da

Vinci’s first flight could finally be unraveled.

Visitors to Da Vinci’s First Flight at the San Diego Air

& Space Museum will be treated to over 30 stunning,

large-scale replicas of Leonardo’s flying machines. The

exhibition offers hands-on experiments and interactive

exhibits, providing a comprehensive exploration of Da

Vinci’s aeronautical genius including:

• A 36-foot replica of Da Vinci’s hang glider, recreated

to embody the elegance and innovation of the

Renaissance master.

• Encounter some of the earliest mechanical drones

designed by Da Vinci, concepts that were far ahead of

their time.

• Engage with exhibits that delve into gliding,

parachutes, and the technical flight instruments that

Leonardo envisioned.

• Discover the hidden designs of Da Vinci’s pioneering

flying inventions, including the clockwork dragonflydrone

Access

EXPANDING HEALTHCARE

ACCESS ACROSS

SAN DIEGO – TOGETHER

BY: KEVIN MATTSON

80 GBSAN.COM | DECEMBER 2024

At San Ysidro Health, we believe that access to healthcare is a

right, not a privilege. Thanks to the unwavering support of our

community, we are able to bring critical medical, dental, and

behavioral health services closer to the people who need them

most. This year, with an expanding presence in southeastern San

Diego, Julian, National City, and enhanced specialty care in Chula

Vista, we are more dedicated than ever to providing care for all.

Our impact is clear: in the past year,

we have cared for 161,840 lives,

from the youngest members of our

community to our elders. Among

those in our care, 37,504 were

pediatric patients (ages 0-17), and

38,138 were senior patients (ages

55+). We are able to reach these

individuals thanks to the strength of

our 3,000 mission-driven healthcare

providers and professionals, each

working tirelessly to make healthcare

accessible and compassionate for

all and through the support of our

supporters and community partners.

Since opening our doors in 1969, San Ysidro Health has been much more

than a healthcare provider. We are a partner in wellness, an advocate

for families, and a source of hope for those facing healthcare

barriers. From our humble beginnings as a single clinic, we have

grown to become one of San Diego’s largest nonprofit healthcare

providers, rooted in the belief that health equity is within reach.

By delivering comprehensive, expert care, we aim to empower

every community we serve.

This year, we were honored to be

recognized as one of California’s Nonprofits

of the Year by Assemblymember David

Alvarez - a meaningful acknowledgment of

our efforts to make a positive impact on lives

throughout the county. We are also proud to hold

Candid’s Platinum Seal of Transparency, affirming our

commitment to integrity, openness, and accountability.

Our supporters can trust that every donation, every partnership, and every volunteer

hour is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

As 2024 comes to a close, we invite you to consider joining us in this mission through

a year-end gift. Supporting San Ysidro Health means you are not only investing in a

respected nonprofit healthcare organization, but you are also contributing to a shared

commitment to community wellness. Together, we can continue to provide services

that foster well-being across all ages, neighborhoods, and needs.

To our partners, supporters, and advocates: thank you for the trust and belief you

have placed in us. With your partnership, we can continue making a profound

difference - one patient, one family, and one community at a time.

Healthcare

Rady Children’s Hospital

A RAY OF HOPE

1953 Groundbreaking

San Diego. 1954. A polio outbreak

casts a long shadow. But amidst the

uncertainty, a ray of hope: Rady

Children’s Hospital welcomes its first

patients. This was not just any opening;

it was the beginning of a 70-year legacy

of caring for San Diego’s children, a

story of growth, groundbreaking advancements and a

constant pursuit of excellence.

“Caring for children and families is in our DNA,”

President and CEO Patrick Frias, MD shared with GB

Magazine. “While much has changed in Rady Children’s

evolution from a small community hospital to a national

leader in pediatric health care, our mission endures.”

Plans for the construction of a new children’s hospital

in San Diego began in 1951, and officials broke ground

two years later. On August 19, 1954, Rady Children’s

officially opened and admitted its first 12 patients.

In the 70 years since, the Hospital has grown from a

single 59-bed facility into a world-class health care

network that attracts patients from around the globe

for its innovation and research.

Rady Children’s rise has been filled with firsts and

milestones. In 1963, the Child Development Clinic

86 GBSAN.COM | DECEMBER 2024

opened, followed by

the Speech and Hearing

Clinic two years later and

what is now called the

Helen Bernardy Center

for Medically Fragile

Children in 1972. In

1973, Children’s Hospital

Emergency Transport

(CHET) expanded the

Hospital’s reach, and

in 1985, the Chadwick

Center for Children and

Families became a valuable

resource for kids who may

have experienced or witnessed

maltreatment, abuse or

violence. In 1993, the Hospital

opened the Rose Pavilion and

the Sam S. and Rose Stein

Emergency Center, the only

level 1 pediatric trauma center

in San Diego County.

“Health care is always

evolving,” says Gail Knight,

MD, senior vice president

and chief medical officer.

“Continuing to improve how

we deliver care is something

that we are very cognizant

of and have to always be

thinking about.”

As Rady Children’s grew

over the years, the Hospital

became better able to meet

the needs of specific patient

populations, says Chris

Abe, RN, vice president

of operations at Rady

Children’s. During Abe’s 38-

year tenure, the Hospital has

made significant advances in

serving oncology patients,

kids and young adults facing

mental and behavioral

health challenges, critically

In the 70 years since it

opened, Rady Children’s

Hospital has grown

from a single 59-bed

facility into a world-class

health care network that

attracts patients from

around the globe for its

innovation and research.

Original Staff

Early Patients

ill cardiovascular patients

and many others.

The Hospital has also

expanded its presence

in Southern California,

opening satellite locations

throughout San Diego and

Riverside counties. Rady

Children’s also partners

with other local health

care systems to bring its

nationally recognized

neonatology care to

hospitals across San Diego

County. That means more

babies can be cared for closer

to home, and in some cases,

in the same hospital as their

parent.

Rady Children’s has big

plans for the future, too. The

Hospital is reimagining its

entire campus, starting with

the construction of a new

hospital tower that will double

the size of the emergency

department and house 140

pediatric, neonatal and

cardiothoracic intensive care

unit beds. The seven-story,

500,000-square foot Intensive

Care Unit and Emergency

Services Pavilion is set to

open in 2027.

Despite all the changes at

Rady Children’s over the

years, patients and families

remain the focus. They are at

the center of every decision

Rady Children’s makes, no

matter how large or small.

As Dr. Frias puts it, “Mission

first, people always.”

The Artists’ Showcase at the Fleet Science

Center was the culmination of Art for

Planetary Health, the Fleet’s year-long

initiative to raise awareness on the topic

of environmental health and its relation to

human health.

With support from the Prebys Foundation,

five creatives, one from each of the Fleet’s partner

communities - San Ysidro, National City, Barrio

Logan and two neighborhood clusters in Southeastern

San Diego - engaged their communities on projects

highlighting the importance of planetary health and the

impact of our actions on the environment.

For Our Sacred Planet, Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski

invited members of her Barrio Logan community to

make a textile art tapestry. “Textile production is the

world’s second most polluting industry, but we can push

back. Repairing our own clothes, shopping second hand,

these are small changes we can make to keep our planet

healthy,” shared Claudia.

Yvette Roman’s letters to mother earth / cartas a la

madre tierra featured written messages on hand-made

paper infused with seeds from native plants. San Ysidro

community members created the letters through a series

of educational workshops, which encouraged participants

to explore their relationship with nature, identify what

aspects of the Earth brings them joy, and reflect on how

they care for it.

La Raza Webb of Southeastern San Diego “wanted

to explore the symbiotic relationship between the

into how a dominant gene expression is impacted

by the hydrogen bond in water and how our daily

personal hair care practices have a major impact

on water quality today.” Through visual art, sound

Creating a Safer San Diego

Central Division’s Gaslamp

the San Diego

Police Foundation. “Yet, our safety

is something we often take for

we should all care about.”

The San Diego Police Foundation

The San Diego

Police Foundation

America’s finest

This past year, the Police Foundation funded several

key public safety initiatives for the San Diego Police

Department, including a cutting-edge

training simulator that immerses

officers in lifelike scenarios. Officers

gain crucial skills in force options and

de-escalation, improving their ability

to make split-second decisions that

keep our community safe.

The Foundation also provided 25

new police bicycles for Central

heightened safety for locals and tourists in San Diego’s

The Women in Blue

women in blue so that SDPD can continue to lead the

nation in the percentage of female officers in its ranks.

For the past 21 years, every police service dog at

SDPD has been purchased with funds donated by the
