We want ...

A gift with a cause. This new Ardmore Armoured Warriors limited-edition silk

scarf collection supports Care for Wild. Inspired by the plight of the rhino - statistics

indicate that one rhino is killed every day! - the magnificent new silk scarf design

was conceived in tribute to this endangered species, and a percentage of each scarf

sale will go to Care for Wild rhino sanctuary, the largest orphaned rhino sanctuary in

the world, which specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation, rewilding, and protection

of orphaned and injured rhinos. Armoured Warriors features two mirrored rhinos

with ornately patterned horns. Surrounded by graphic floral and circular motifs, the

design honours the artistry and intricacy of traditional Zulu beadwork and basketry.

A dynamic celebration of pattern and colour, it embodies the vibrancy of Africa with

a palette inspired by the veld – golden grass, ochre earth, orange sunset and blue

sky – and grounded by graphic pattern. With only 100 made in each colourway, these

scarves are collectible artworks in themselves. Also available as pocket squares and

necktie sizing, the collection allows you to wear your heart on your sleeve, as it were,

in support of the courageous conservationists fighting for rhino protection.

Art, not war

Bespoke gun case crafter Tinus Tredoux is back

with a bang! (Yes, pun intended.) After a

two-decade break, he’s revived Country Crafts by

Tinus Tredoux, and it feels like he never left the

scene. The relaunch was marked by a lovely event

at the Kretschmann Art Gallery, where art lovers,

history buffs, collectors and friends gathered to

celebrate. The gallery was filled with beautiful art

pieces, historic weaponry, and, of course, Tinus’s

hand-crafted gun cases. Guests mingled over

delicious treats and, naturally, a fine selection of

wine. An unforgettable night for all.

The wonder of words

Follow the trail of empty coffee mugs, chocolate wrappers,

and the fragrance of scented candles, and you’ll likely find Michael Ferguson,

local author and unrepentant people-watcher.

For the past four years, Michael

Ferguson’s been channelling his

observations … the quirky auntie,

the outspoken artist, the annoyed

little brother, your normal oak doing

a good deed … into whole fictional

worlds. He thinks of it as a lucky packet

of personalities. And each book is his

chance to shake it up and see what

interesting traits fall out.

He’s a master of turning human

behaviour into inspiration … especially

bad behaviour. So, if you’re ever in his

presence, you might want to play nice.

Because if you misbehave, Michael

warns, there’s a good chance some

part of you will eventually end up in

one of his novels.

‘My life motto is …

do not speak quietly

about the things that set

your soul on fire. Shout

them so that even the

uninterested will have no

choice but to hear you.’

In the last four years, he’s launched

four books. First came Ephemera,

Short Fictions, then The Acrimonious:

Paranormal Fictions, both selfpublished.

They’re both terrifying …

and hilarious. Think The Adams Family

or A Nightmare Before Christmas. Then,

not long after, his big break came with

A Prophecy of Flowers and Lightning ,

which was published by Krest in July

last year.

12 Get It Magazine Dec 24 / Jan 25

‘This novel is a love letter to mythology.

I wanted to take elements from all the

ancient myths that I have loved for

so long and put them into a story of

my own. It uses mythology to explore

themes of feminism, motherhood,

belonging, love, sacrifice, destiny

and tragedy. It was supposed to be a

stand-alone book but once I started, I

couldn’t stop.

‘I had created this world in which

there were more stories to be told

and so a year later I finished A God of

Flames and Monsters. I think it does a

good job of expanding the universe

while exploring themes of personal

responsibility, fixing mistakes and

doing the right thing even when it isn’t

the easy thing.’

Although Michael is an SEO specialist

by day, storytelling has been his calling

for as long as he can remember …

and laughs about how his imagination

practically has a life of its own. In fact,

when he doesn’t write, or can’t express

himself, he gets grumpy. The stories

basically beg to escape.

‘The stories are there in my head, and

if I don’t let them out, then I get all

cranky. I’m not the boss. The stories

and the characters are.’

In contrast, his happiest moments are

when readers get his work … catching

the details he thought no one would

notice. In fact, he was over the moon

when a reader from the USA posted

a review of A Prophecy of Flowers and

Lightning earlier this year.

Michael describes his driving force as

half passion, half pure spite. Yes, he’s

living the writer’s dream fuelled by love

for the craft and a desire to thrive in

full view of anyone who ever doubted

him. (So long, haters!)

‘My life motto is … do not speak

quietly about the things that set your

soul on fire. Shout them so that even

the uninterested will have no choice

but to hear you.’

When he’s in creative mode, his home

office is his sanctuary. It’s stocked with

coffee, chocolate, a large monitor, his

fave keyboard and most importantly,

peace and quiet. But if he needs

a change of scenery, you’ll most

probably find him at Mugg & Bean or

The Daily, happily tucked away in a

cozy corner with a latte.

Right now, he’s already working on

the third and (maybe) final book of his

Luciferian Mythos series, and he always

has a few short stories in the works,

which he releases throughout the year.

From where he stands, Michael’s

already living his dream. Four years

ago, he couldn’t have guessed the

amazing journey he was embarking

on, and he’s eternally grateful.

Now, he’s just hoping for even more

opportunities, ready to seize them with

both hands, both feet … and maybe

some coffee or chocolate in hand.

Watch this space, because his story is

only just beginning.

Any quirky writing rituals?

Hahaha! I am quirky by nature so, yes.

My favourite time to write is at night.

I take a shower or a bath with some

of my favourite products from places

like Lush or Rain. There is something

about what I call ‘washing the day off

of myself’ that really resets my brain

and gets me into that creative space.

I love music and create playlists that

I feel match the vibe of what I am

writing. I also like to burn a scented

candle while I am writing. Also

chocolate! My books were written on

top of mountains of empty Cadbury

Whole Nut slab wrappers.

The best way to beat

writer’s block?

I don’t believe in writer’s block. There

is only writer’s doubt. But, if a writer

ever feels ‘blocked’ there are three

things that might help. The first thing

is to write through the problem. Get

whatever you can down on the page.

You will either solve the problem

this way or you can come back to

it later. Secondly, walk away and do

something else. Whatever you are

struggling with in the story will be

resolved and pop into your head

while you are doing the dishes or

in the drive thru line at Burger King.

Lastly, talk about the story. Call a

friend or your mom or even just talk

to yourself and tell them your story

out loud. This sounds strange but it

really helps and it’s like a lightbulb

will go off in your head with all the

answers you need.

How do you breathe life into your

characters?

I do use bits and pieces from people

in real life (or even situations people

have found themselves in) to give

my characters life and believability.

I have so much love and respect for

women, and I can only hope that

comes across in my writing. I find

women a little more interesting to

write about than men. They have a

nuance to them - in my mind anyway

- that make them more enjoyable for

me to write than my male characters.

They can be powerful while also

being beautiful, dangerous and at

the same time beguiling in ways that

men just can’t be.

What do you do when you’re

not writing?

Making a fool of myself on social

media, reading, watching TV and

spending time with friends, family

and of course my partner, Berno. We

have three sausage dogs who keep

us busy, too. Tammy is geriatric at 14

years old and only moves when food

is put in her bowl. Merry and Pippin

are eight months old and enjoy

causing chaos wherever their paws

carry them.

What does your ideal fantasy

Christmas look like?

I absolutely adore Christmas. I go

all out every year. Decorations

everywhere. A perfect Christmas is

time with family, good food - roast

chicken! - that is prepared and eaten

together, good wine (white preferably

in the Summer … especially Leopards

Leap Chenin Blanc and De Grendel

Cap Classique Brut). And don’t forget,

lots of books under the Christmas

tree. As far as I am concerned nothing

beats a good book as a Christmas

present, to give or receive.

Cricket courts

&Christmas cheer

It’s that magical time of year when the cricket calls take a back seat

to jingle balls … and for Talita Wiegand, it’s a well-earned break.

Fresh off her return from the Indoor Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka, SA Ladies Master

captain Talita Wiegand is trading wickets for warm family moments and a slice (or three)

of her family’s famous chocolate cake.

To date, she’s been the epitome of cricket queen goals, with a whopping five World Cups

under her belt … Australia, Fourways, England, Cape Town, and now Sri Lanka. The cherry

on top? Team SA snagged a podium finish this year, claiming third place. Not too shabby

for a sport that still carries the stereotype of being a boys’ game.

But don’t let her calm, down-to-earth demeanour fool you. Talita believes she’s breaking

barriers and paving the way for girls to shine in traditionally male-dominated sports. Such

as, well, cricket.

‘It hasn’t been easy,’ she admits. ‘I’ve been shut down so many times because girls don’t

play cricket. But that just made me work harder, to never be shut down again. I’m doing

this for the next generation of girls. We can exist loudly, and we will.’

This passion for the underdog runs deep. Talita considers herself one, and she’s embraced

every setback as a stepping stone to something better.

Her journey spans more than just cricket, though. She’s a sports all-rounder. From touch

rugby to softball in New Zealand (a spur of the moment adventure), it’s safe to say

that Talita’s adventurous spirit has led her to the farthest corners of sport … and selfdiscovery.

Because when she plays, she plays hard. Whether it’s on club, provincial or

international level.

‘My parents played competitive squash. So, when I was four-years-old, I received my first

squash racket. I remember they actually had to saw the handle because it was too big for

me. But I was adamant! And so, that’s where my love for anything active developed. It’s

part of what makes me, me.’

Her cricket journey began almost by accident. Back in 2005, while on crutches no less,

she went to support a friend’s game. The team was short a player and asked her to just

stand on the court to fill the space … fast-forward to her being selected for the Provincial

Mixed side shortly after. Fate, much?

Since then, she’s been unstoppable. Talita’s fave memory? Winning the Ladies Masters

Indoor Cricket World Cup in 2016. And, being the most capped Ladies Masters Player

in SA. Apart from the sport itself, leadership is like second nature to her. She’s been the

team’s captain for three world cups in a row now. And her approach to leadership is as

genuine as it gets. ‘Be human. Be honest. Be tough, but approachable.

‘The sport humbles you. You are not bigger than the game. There is always

something to learn. The people I’ve met and relationships I’ve formed has also been a

crucial part of the sport.’

When she’s not on the court, Talita’s in the classroom, guiding the next generation as an

Afrikaans and Life Orientation teacher.

‘Sport at this level teaches you life skills and perspectives that I just love sharing with

my learners,’ And while her cricket dreams are self-funded - indoor cricket remains an

amateur sport - she’s quick to add that every sacrifice has been totally worth it.

At home, Talita is all about balance. Whether she’s cracking jokes, indulging in her caffeine

addiction, or unwinding with music (nothing beats the national anthem at a World

Cup), she’s a grounded, joyful soul. She’s also a bassist and a sound engineer. And when

it comes to water, she’s in her element … swimming, kayaking, or simply soaking up

the peace it brings.

This Christmas, Talita’s agenda is refreshingly simple. Spending time with family. Making

memories. And indulging in some well-deserved downtime. She’s recharging her

batteries with an eye on the future … if her body allows, she’s already dreaming of the

2027 World Cup.

‘But, until then, I am perfectly happy. I’m also content just laughing on my own. More

often than not laughing at myself. I genuinely enjoy being happy … and I’ll always stay

true to myself,’

For now, she’s content spreading cheer, inspiring the next generation, and living her

truth. Because whether on or off the court, she’s proof that joy, grit, and a little chocolate

cake can go a long way.

treat, especially during the festive

season. It’s the perfect dessert

for any meal. It’s so moist and

1/4 cup cocoa; 3 eggs.

For the syrup: 1 cup sugar; 1 can

Ideal milk; 1 slab nutty chocolate

Mix the oil, water, egg yolks and

sugar together. Then mix dry

ingredients thoroughly.

SAVOURY WAFFLES WITH WHIPPED

RICOTTA & SMOKED TROUT

This easy yet luxurious recipe, served with Spier Cap Classique Brut,

is perfect for a breakfast or brunch treat.

Turn brunch into a celebration by pairing these waffles

with Spier Cap Classique Brut. The wine’s exuberant

bubbles and golden hue complement the crispy waffles,

while its apple and citrus notes enhance the smoked

trout. The Cap Classique’s balanced mouthfeel and good

acidity cut through the richness of the whipped ricotta.

Serves four.

You’ll need: For the waffle mixture- 2 XL eggs, 2 Tbsp

extra virgin olive oil, ½ cup sour cream, ½ cup milk, 1½

cups cake flour, 1½ tsp baking powder, ½ to ¾ cup finely

chopped spring onions (plus extra for serving, optional),

½ cup finely grated hard cheese (Parmesan / Pecorino /

Gruyère), salt and pepper, to taste

For topping - ½ cup sour cream, 230g ricotta cheese or

smooth full cream cottage cheese, 200g cold smoked

trout/salmon ribbons, a small bunch of chives, finely

sliced, for serving

For the creamy mustard vinaigrette - 3 Tbsp extra virgin

olive oil, 3 tsp fresh lemon juice, 3 tsp mayonnaise, 1 tsp

honey, salt and pepper, to taste

To make: Prepare the waffles and whipped cheese.

Whisk together the eggs, oil, sour cream, and milk in a medium

mixing bowl. Add the flour and baking powder and stir until

almost mixed, then add the spring onions and cheese until no

floury bits remain (do not overmix). You’ll have a thick mixture.

Set aside while you prepare the whipped cheese.

To prepare the whipped cheese, mix the sour cream and

cheese in a small blender until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

Prepare the vinaigrette. Put all the ingredients into a medium

jar with a lid, then shake until well blended. Set aside until

ready to serve.

Cook the waffles and assemble. Heat a waffle maker. Spoon the

mixture into the hot machine and cook until golden brown.

Serve warm, topped with a dollop of prepared whipped cheese,

ribbons of trout, and freshly chopped chives. Finish with a

drizzle of the prepared vinaigrette, then serve at once.

Tip: Leftover waffles can be stored in the fridge for up to two

days and refreshed in a toaster. If you want to serve all the

waffles warm at the same time, pre-toast them in advance,

then refresh them in an oven at 180°C for a few minutes.

Indulge

ALMOND, CHOCOLATE & ORANGE CANTUCCINI

Cantuccini are the biscotti of Tuscany. Traditionally served with Vin Santo,

they’re equally delicious dipped into a chilled dessert wine or good espresso.

When you bake these, double up.

Keep a batch for yourself, and the

other wrap up with a bottle of dessert

wine ... a brilliant hostess gift

You’ll need: 2 cups cake flour, 1 cup

granulated sugar, 1 tsp baking

powder, pinch of salt, 2 eggs, 5

pumps NOMU Vanilla Paste, grated

zest of 2 oranges, 100g almonds

(skin on), roasted and coarsely

chopped, 60g NOMU Decadent Hot

Chocolate chunks

To make: Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder

and salt in a large bowl and set aside.

Mix the eggs, Vanilla Paste and zest

together. Pour the egg mixture into

the dry ingredients and stir gently

with a wooden spoon. Add the nuts

and NOMU Decadent Hot Chocolate

chunks and stir to combine.

Divide the dough mix in half and roll

each into a log shape, about 30cm

long and 5cm wide. Place the logs

onto a buttered and floured oven

tray, making sure there is space

between each one for spreading.

Bake for 25 minutes until firm and

light golden brown. Remove from the

oven and allow to cool slightly.

Reduce the oven temperature to

90°C. Whilst still warm, thinly slice the

logs into 1cm slices and place on a

greased oven tray. Bake further for

approximately 4 to 5 hours, turning

halfway through until completely

dried out and crisp.
