A gift with a cause. This new Ardmore Armoured Warriors limited-edition silk

scarf collection supports Care for Wild. Inspired by the plight of the rhino - statistics

indicate that one rhino is killed every day! - the magnificent new silk scarf design

was conceived in tribute to this endangered species, and a percentage of each scarf

sale will go to Care for Wild rhino sanctuary, the largest orphaned rhino sanctuary in

the world, which specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation, rewilding, and protection

of orphaned and injured rhinos. Armoured Warriors features two mirrored rhinos

with ornately patterned horns. Surrounded by graphic floral and circular motifs, the

design honours the artistry and intricacy of traditional Zulu beadwork and basketry.

A dynamic celebration of pattern and colour, it embodies the vibrancy of Africa with

a palette inspired by the veld – golden grass, ochre earth, orange sunset and blue

sky – and grounded by graphic pattern. With only 100 made in each colourway, these

scarves are collectible artworks in themselves. Also available as pocket squares and

Beauty and

the business

Mathebe Molise’s career as one of South Africa’s most successful beauty entrepreneurs

is an ode to the strength she observed in her mother and grandmother.

Text: LISA WITEPSKI. • Photo: TINOTENDA MASOMERA

Hands up if you have cherished

childhood memories of watching

your mom apply mascara or spritsing

on her perfume before leaving the

house? Mathebe has memories

like this, too ... recollections of her

grandmother, her nails always

painted pink, teaching her how to

braid her hair, for example.

While moments like that definitely

sparked her passion for haircare

(which led to her later interest in

beauty), it was more the strength

of her grandmother and mother –

herself an entrepreneur who started

a beauty company when she wasn’t

working as an accountant – that

led Mathebe to become a business

owner. “Women empowerment

was a big theme in my life. I grew

up around women who were gogetters

and had an extremely can-do

attitude,” she says, “and because of

that, I think that entrepreneurship

was always in my future. Beauty

was simply the vehicle I chose to

express it.”

Why beauty? “I think that beauty

is multi-faceted. It's not about

transforming you but enhancing

what you have.” Mathebe loves the

rituals associated with beauty, which

make it about so much more than

spoiling yourself. “It’s soothing and

relaxing; a gift to yourself,” she says.

It's probably because she’d witnessed

her own mother take risks that

Mathebe felt comfortable to leave a

successful career in banking to focus

on Beauty on TApp, which she first

established in 2015. The company’s

12 Get It Magazine Dec 24 / Jan 25

beginning was a slow burn, she

says, but come the pandemic, it

skyrocketed. This timing had both

pros and cons. Mathebe had just

been promoted to a role as Executive

Assistant to her employer company’s

CEO, so staying home meant she had

more time to focus on marketing,

packaging and finance (all activities

she did by herself ), but she was also

balancing the demands of a complex

role that required a lot of time.

Unsurprisingly, her mental health

took a knock ... the first sign that it

might be time to leave the corporate

world. Two years later, when it was

time to rotate out of her role, she

realised that her passion for Beauty

on TApp surpassed her corporate

ambitions – and she was finally ready

to take the leap.

The timing was especially fortuitous,

because she had just launched Pastry

(named for her love of baking), one

of the first bodycare ranges in South

Africa to be formulated with active

ingredients for superior results. But,

even so, Mathebe found herself

grappling with hard questions. Would

there be enough work to keep her

busy full-time? Would the company

sustain her?

The fact that she was able to answer

‘yes’ to all these brainteasers is

probably because Mathebe has

always been clear on the fact that

her business is based on what the

market wants, and responding. That’s

how Pastry came about ... when

Beauty on TApp customers started

asking whether they could use

serum on their chests, for example, or

salicylic acid under their armpits, she

provided the products. Her second

brand, B’Air, was born out of the

same philosophy ... when customers

asked for more affordable options,

she complied.

This ethos drove the brands forward

to the point where Beauty On TApp

now has three physical stores, in

Waterfall, Menlyn and Umhlanga’s

Gateway – and they’re busier than

the online outlet. But this makes

sense, Mathebe says. “Going into

bricks and mortar was scary. As a

CA, I’m cautious by nature – but I

think that people enjoy going into

a physical store because they want

to interact with a human who can

give advice. Our stores feel like a safe

space ... when you go inside, you

feel like you’re talking to a friend or

a sister.”

That’s one of the factors that’s

driven the brand’s success, but

its authenticity has also played a

major role. Mathebe’s own attitude

has been influential here. “I have

dark marks and I don’t mind going

online and talking about them, if it

helps someone else” she says. This

emphasis on education has been

another reason Beauty On TApp,

Pastry and B’Air have built an army

of fans ... rather than launching hard

sell marketing campaigns, the brands

focuses on educating customers

about the benefits of ingredients.

It’s all about building trust – and

that’s what’s carrying Beauty On

TApp forward. Mathebe says that,

thanks to the online store, it’s been

easy to gather data showing where

the customer base is (predominantly

Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and

Cape Town) – so the plan is to follow

the market.

Mathebe is also looking forward

to introducing new products

and services: there’s a new app

in development, that will help

customers analyse their skin,

and a Pastry roll on deodorant

with ingredients to help treat

discoloration. B’Air will also be

launching new products, and then

there’s Mzuri, the luxury body range

with an accent on luxurious self-care.

Mathebe is also thinking about a hair

care range. “I love creating. It’s very

complex, because you have to think

about the technical considerations

and which ingredients you can use

to achieve them. But it’s also fun.

“Ultimately, I’d love to build a

multinational beauty company that

could take on Big Business, that

speaks authentically to people from

Africa. And, in time, it would be

great to spread into the rest of the

continent, too,” Mathebe says.

Details: shopbeautyontapp.co.za,

@beautyontapp on Instagram.

Your anti-ageing routine

Trying to stave off those crow’s

feet and the coarse, dry texture of

ageing skin? Your first must-have,

says Mathebe, is – no surprise

– a sunscreen (yes, even for

dark skins), reapplied frequently.

A misting spray is also useful,

especially on those hot days. Apart

from that, you’ll want to stock

your cosmetic cupboard with a

plumping, hydrating cleanser, a

soothing, hydrating toner and a

serum containing ingredients like

hyaluronic acid, ceramides and

peptides. At night-time, you’ll

want to add replenishing retinol

to your regime to help boost skin

turnover and keep your face looking

fresh, finishing it all off with a

hydrating moisturiser that seals

in all that goodness. “Essentially,

there are three elements to antiageing:

protecting, hydrating and

nourishment, and you want to use

products and ingredients that speak

to all of them,” Mathebe concludes.

FESTIVE

FEASTING

That bloated feeling

It’s very encouraging to learn

that a few days of heavy eating

won’t derail your long-term

eating plan – but what about that

bloated feeling that accompanies

a day of indulgence? First, says

Aziwe, prioritise movement.

Then, up your fibre intake. “One

of the reasons we feel bloated

is because we eat foods that are

largely high in protein, but don’t

focus on veg or fibre. Try to eat

more salads and make swaps that

include more fibre – like switching

white bread for rye,” Aziwe

suggests. Finally, keep filling that

water bottle, and take a walk after

meals where you can.

14 Get It Magazine Dec 24 / Jan 25

Fearing all that festive feasting? Don’t. With a few simple tweaks, you can enjoy all this

special season has to offer without compromising your wellness goals.

Ah, December. Time to relax and reset.

Time to linger over tables groaning

with goodies. To toast the old year

and the new, and to reward yourself

for all your efforts during the past 12

months. Sadly, that also means that

it’s time to watch all your hard-won

wellness gains slip out of sight…

Not necessarily, says dietitian Aziwe

Booi. Sure, no one wants to do mental

calorie calculations when they’re

supposed to be enjoying a festive

feast – and the good news is that you

don’t have to. “Remember that your

relationship with food is a journey.

There’s no fun denying yourself an

indulgence – but you don’t need to

berate yourself if you do eat more

extravagantly than usual.

Enjoy it and move on.”

Aziwe points out that

pouring extra brandy

sauce on your Christmas

pud isn’t likely to cause

lasting damage to your

waistline. But, in case

you’re worried that

three weeks of ongoing

celebrations will leave

their mark, it’s good to

put things in perspective.

“Much as this season is

heavy on events, you’ll

probably attend only one brunch,

cocktail party or dinner each day.

That means you have plenty of other

‘food opportunities’ to make up for

meals where you may not be eating

nutrient-dense foods, or where the

food might be a bit richer than you’re

used to.” In other words, if you know

that you’re not going to be able to

resist seconds at that family dinner,

keep breakfast and lunch on the

light side, and try to include as many

colourful vegetables as possible.

If you’re the one hosting, so much

the better. “Many of us have lots of

family visitors at this time, and the

thought of entertaining large crowds

can be stressful. But you can make it

fun and keep it healthy,” Aziwe points

out. Her go to? A burger bar. Sneak in

nutrients where you can. Wholewheat

or seeded rolls for extra fibre, loads

of veggie toppings (lettuce, tomato,

onion, gherkins are the obvious,

but what about smashed avo or

caramelized mushrooms) and lean

proteins like chicken breasts or lean

mince. Even pizza night can get a

healthy spin. Buy your base from your

favorite supermarket (or make your

own with a mix of flour and oat bran

for added fibre), sprinkle with low fat

cheese, and make sure you have lots

of fresh toppings available. Cherry

tomatoes, shredded chicken, peppers,

mushrooms, baby spinach, and onion

all make great options.

What about those days when you’re

not sure what’s going to be on the

menu, but you’re pretty certain

it’s going to be something on the

“Remember that your relationship with food

is a journey. There’s no fun denying yourself

an indulgence – but you don’t need to berate

yourself if you do eat more extravagantly

than usual. Enjoy it and move on.”

decadent side? In this case, says

Aziwe, it’s a good idea to volunteer

to bring a salad – that way, whatever

your hostess dishes up, you can be

sure there will be some vitaminpacked

veg. Heap your plate, so that

you fill up on the healthy stuff first.

If you’re craving potato salad, make

it more nutritious by keeping the

skins on and using a low-oil or lite

mayonnaise.

Planning a braai? Again, look for leaner

cuts of protein – ask your butcher to

cut portions with less fat. Chicken can

be a challenge even for braai masters,

because it’s the skin that provides the

most taste – but also the most fat.

Beat this problem by letting it steep

in marinade for several hours then

braaing in foil to retain succulence.

Or consider fish – a seafood braai is

absolutely deliciously, naturally low

in fat, and flavourful even if you cook

it with nothing more than herbs and

lemon juice.

Cocktail parties are notoriously tricky.

First of all, it’s easy to lose track of

just how many little canapes you’ve

munched, so, the trick here is to fill

up at home. Eat a proper lunch (or

dinner) before you head out and you’ll

be less tempted to pick mindlessly

at the offerings. If the event involves

a buffet, be sure to take a side plate

rather than a large one. You’ll still be

able to get a taste of everything, but

you won’t have as much space to fill

with food.

The other reason cocktails pose a

challenge for the conscious eater is

because drinks are part

and parcel of the event

– and our increased

alcohol intake is one of

the main reasons we

gain weight over the

festive season, Aziwe

says. Luckily, there are

plenty zero option drinks

now on the market,

including wines and

gin. There are also loads

of low-calorie and lite

versions available. But,

if you’re not mad about

these, try to balance your intake by

drinking one glass of water for every

alcoholic beverage you enjoy, helping

you to drink less. It also helps to use

sugar free mixers for cocktails. Finally,

drinking on an empty stomach is a

recipe for disaster, so be sure to eat

something before you imbibe.

“Food can be so much fun. If you

follow some basic guidelines, you’ll

be able to enjoy it all without

experiencing any regrets: Eat until

you no longer feel hungry, rather than

until you feel sick, take small portions

and give yourself at least 15 minutes

after a meal before you go back for

seconds. Healthy eating is a lifestyle,

so even if you indulge more than you

should this month, you can get back

on track in January,” Aziwe says.

BUBBLY

SUMMER

Bubbles and enticing sushi. Fine dining and festivity.

Take a seat at these tasteful experiences.

BUBBLY LUNCH DATE

Long late lunches. Clinking glasses. Cheerful chatter. And

a joyous vibe. Kanpai, an Asian Tapas and Bubbles bar, is

where you want to be spending your time this Summer,

experiencing bubbly Japanese lunches.

First up ... forget the fine wine and cocktail menu, bubbles

are way more festive and fun. You can also do away with

the large bowls of salads because when you get a taste of

the small plates at Kanpai Restaurant in Rosebank, you’ll be

ordering a table full of them for you and your friends and

family to enjoy.

The restaurant’s name is derived from the Japanese word

cheers, so there is no shame in raising your glass all afternoon.

Home to plenty of local Cap Classiques to try ... our favourite

is the Boschendal Brut Rose that pairs so well with sushi and

the Asian-inspired dishes found on the menu. The bubbles

flow easy with the upbeat music in the background and

view of the beautiful bar with a built-in fish tank, next to

a large cabinet display of sparkling wines. The stunning

bubble walls and the reflective ceiling accents all add to

the lively yet relaxed feeling.

The party starter is definitely the small plates arriving at the

table looking fresh and vibrant. The vegan bliss of tempura

tofu, chives, beetroot rice topped with a sweet and sour

sauce is an appetizing start from their specialty sushi

options. To spice things up, the Vietnamese stuffed wings

are worth getting your fingers messy ... they certainly wake

up your taste buds to new exciting flavours and textures.

And a memorable plate are the spinach and cream cheese

dumplings - light and creamy pockets of yum! With so

many exciting plates and MCC’s to try, you can turn any

occasion into a celebration at Kanpai and leave on a

bubblier and happier note.

We can see how this can becomes a regular dining spot

for some ... and if you’re a frequent visitor, you’ll get a set of

personalised chopsticks.

SUMMER DINING AT ITS FINEST

Chef Gareth Jordaan and his team have introduced a

new Summer menu at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa’s

Amuse-Bouche Restaurant, boasting a sophisticated

à la carte menu that can be paired with an extensive

wine list for a memorable night out. It’s glam all the

way ... all comfy leather button-back chairs and white

decked tables, chequered flooring and gorgeous

modern chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows

overlooking the grounds. To start, expect dishes like

salmon gravlax with herbed dijon mustard, popped

rice, pressed melon, citrus crumble, blood orange &

lentil dressing. Gosh ... swoon already. Or thinly sliced

octopus carpaccio, spring onion and tomato chilli salsa,

crispy squid & lime vinaigrette dressing. For mains, mille

feuille mushrooms, braised leeks, spinach, peppadew,

parmesan sauce and micro herb salad sounds fab, as

does the shellfish pasta with sautéed mussels, shrimp,

Napolitana sauce, grilled tiger prawns, dill oil, basil &

grana Padano. And while we do love a cheese board for

dessert, the peanut butter mousse with dark chocolate,

meringue kisses, caramel popcorn & cherry gel is

massively tempting, as is the baked Passionfruit Ravioli

with blueberry ice cream & passionfruit coulis. Dinner is

served from 6pm until 9.30pm. Adults only. Dress smart

casual. 1 Alma Road, Sandton. Details: fairlawns.co.za

SAVOURY WAFFLES WITH WHIPPED

RICOTTA & SMOKED TROUT

This easy yet luxurious recipe, served with Spier Cap Classique Brut,

is perfect for a breakfast or brunch treat.

Turn brunch into a celebration by pairing these waffles

with Spier Cap Classique Brut. The wine’s exuberant

bubbles and golden hue complement the crispy waffles,

while its apple and citrus notes enhance the smoked

trout. The Cap Classique’s balanced mouthfeel and good

acidity cut through the richness of the whipped ricotta.

Serves four.

You’ll need: For the waffle mixture- 2 XL eggs, 2 Tbsp

extra virgin olive oil, ½ cup sour cream, ½ cup milk, 1½

cups cake flour, 1½ tsp baking powder, ½ to ¾ cup finely

chopped spring onions (plus extra for serving, optional),

½ cup finely grated hard cheese (Parmesan / Pecorino /

Gruyère), salt and pepper, to taste

For topping - ½ cup sour cream, 230g ricotta cheese or

smooth full cream cottage cheese, 200g cold smoked

trout/salmon ribbons, a small bunch of chives, finely

sliced, for serving

For the creamy mustard vinaigrette - 3 Tbsp extra virgin

olive oil, 3 tsp fresh lemon juice, 3 tsp mayonnaise, 1 tsp

honey, salt and pepper, to taste

To make: Prepare the waffles and whipped cheese.

Whisk together the eggs, oil, sour cream, and milk in a medium

mixing bowl. Add the flour and baking powder and stir until

almost mixed, then add the spring onions and cheese until no

floury bits remain (do not overmix). You’ll have a thick mixture.

Set aside while you prepare the whipped cheese.

To prepare the whipped cheese, mix the sour cream and

cheese in a small blender until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

Prepare the vinaigrette. Put all the ingredients into a medium

jar with a lid, then shake until well blended. Set aside until

ready to serve.

Cook the waffles and assemble. Heat a waffle maker. Spoon the

mixture into the hot machine and cook until golden brown.

Serve warm, topped with a dollop of prepared whipped cheese,

ribbons of trout, and freshly chopped chives. Finish with a

drizzle of the prepared vinaigrette, then serve at once.

Tip: Leftover waffles can be stored in the fridge for up to two

days and refreshed in a toaster. If you want to serve all the

waffles warm at the same time, pre-toast them in advance,

then refresh them in an oven at 180°C for a few minutes.

Indulge

ALMOND, CHOCOLATE & ORANGE CANTUCCINI

Cantuccini are the biscotti of Tuscany. Traditionally served with Vin Santo,

they’re equally delicious dipped into a chilled dessert wine or good espresso.

When you bake these, double up.

Keep a batch for yourself, and the

other wrap up with a bottle of dessert

wine ... a brilliant hostess gift

You’ll need: 2 cups cake flour, 1 cup

granulated sugar, 1 tsp baking

powder, pinch of salt, 2 eggs, 5

pumps NOMU Vanilla Paste, grated

zest of 2 oranges, 100g almonds

(skin on), roasted and coarsely

chopped, 60g NOMU Decadent Hot

Chocolate chunks

To make: Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder

and salt in a large bowl and set aside.

Mix the eggs, Vanilla Paste and zest

together. Pour the egg mixture into

the dry ingredients and stir gently

with a wooden spoon. Add the nuts

and NOMU Decadent Hot Chocolate

chunks and stir to combine.

Divide the dough mix in half and roll

each into a log shape, about 30cm

long and 5cm wide. Place the logs

onto a buttered and floured oven

tray, making sure there is space

between each one for spreading.

Bake for 25 minutes until firm and

light golden brown. Remove from the

oven and allow to cool slightly.

Reduce the oven temperature to

90°C. Whilst still warm, thinly slice the

logs into 1cm slices and place on a

greased oven tray. Bake further for

approximately 4 to 5 hours, turning

halfway through until completely

dried out and crisp.

GIFTS OF

THE GARDEN

Festive looking Solar Flare, leafy veggies packed

with protein and fruiting capsicums

Text: ALICE COETZEE

We’re planting …

Coleus Volcanica Solar Flare

because it’s the perfect plant for the

festive season, with its heart-shaped red

and burgundy leaves, edged with gold. The

underside of the leaves is yellow green, making it a

colourful feature plant for containers and the garden.

It is part of the sun coleus range that does best with

morning sun but also tolerates shade. The tall plants

(90cm high and 70cm wide) bring a touch of drama

into the garden. Plant in fertile soil that retains moisture

but doesn’t get soggy. Plants in containers should be

watered daily or every second day in Summer. Feed

monthly with a liquid fertiliser. It will perform as

a perennial in frost free gardens but is frost

tender and should be treated as an

annual in areas that receive frost.

Veggie of the month

Leafy veggies generally don’t like the heat,

but one that can handle it is our indigenous

spinach, better known as Marog (Amaranthus

tricolour) or Imbuya. It is an excellent hot,

dry weather substitute for spinach. Marog

has arrow-shaped leaves that are thicker than

spinach leaves and can be picked over a long

period. The young leaves have a mild flavour

and can be eaten raw or cooked like spinach.

They are an excellent source of plant protein

as well as vitamins C and A. Marog grows best

in full sun in well composted soil. The seeds

are very small, and it is easier to sow them

evenly by mixing them with sand or dry soil.

The seeds are usually planted in rows. Seed

germinates within 7 to 14 days and the final

spacing should be 25cm apart. Plants need

regular watering and grow easily. For the best

flavour, harvest the tender tops when they

are about 25cm tall, by cutting them off with

scissors and then leaving the plant to re-grow.

Marog can be intercropped with other veggies.

Indoor plant of the month ... this dwarf

Capsicum Acapulco is irresistible with its

glossy multi-coloured fruit. Pop it into a pot

as a centrepiece for the Christmas feast table.

It is also a super gift. It bears loads of fruit,

which doesn’t have the heat of a chilli pepper,

being slightly sweet, so it is safe to be around

children. To keep on fruiting capsicums, need

at least six hours of sun a day. A good idea

is to enjoy it indoors for a few days and then

move it onto a sunny patio or into the garden.

Plant in rich, well composted soil that drains

well. Don’t let the soil dry out completely but

also avoid overwatering and soggy soil.

Details: www.lvgplant.co.za

Garden tasks

Going away? Before leaving check the irrigation system

for blocked nozzles and make sure that automatic systems

are set correctly. Move plants in pots and hanging baskets

out of the direct sun. • Fertilise flowering plants but if you

are going away, delay until your return. • There is still time

to sow marigolds, alyssum, California poppies, portulaca

and nasturtiums. • Water early in the morning or

late afternoon. • Pests are out in force. Use organic insect

sprays when pests are noticed.

Rooftops road tripping

From bikes to boards .. the road trip essentials guide to roof racks

There’s nothing that we South Africans

love more than a road trip. With the

summer holiday season just a week

or so away, we’re gearing up for a

scenic coastal drive, a rugged camping

adventure, a cross-country journey.

Having the right gear can make all the

difference when it comes to comfort

and convenience on the road.

“Whether you’re transporting bikes,

kayaks, SUPs, a rooftop tent, or a

roof box, it all starts with a roof

rack,” says Jamie Owen, marketing

manager for Thule SA. Roof racks

serve as the foundation, enabling

you to bring all your essential gear

along so you can focus on creating

unforgettable memories.

Versatility and extra space Roof racks

are invaluable when you need extra

space or want to travel comfortably

without cramming items into the

trunk. A well-installed roof rack and

the right setup allow you to pack

beyond your vehicle’s interior capacity,

giving passengers more legroom and

creating a safer, more enjoyable ride.

It helps that roof racks can be tailored

to your specific vehicle. Choosing the

right system, often consisting of load

bars, feet, and a custom-fit kit, ensures

secure mounting.

Choosing a compatible roof rack

system One of the most crucial factors

is ensuring your roof rack system

is compatible with your vehicle’s

make and model. Online tools from

reputable suppliers can simplify this

process by allowing you to input your

car’s details and find the best fit. Once

you have the right system, installation

is usually straightforward, letting you

get road-ready in minutes.

Optimising your space ... roof boxes

and carrier baskets Adding roof boxes

or carrier baskets provides extra room

for bulky items, freeing up space inside

the vehicle. For those going on family

trips, low-profile, aerodynamic options

help minimise noise and improve

fuel efficiency, while roof platforms

are ideal for securing tents, coolers, or

other larger equipment for off-road or

camping excursions.

What about bike and water sports

gear? Exploring on two wheels or

taking advantage of South Africa’s

natural landscapes for kayaking,

paddleboarding, or surfing is more

accessible with the right roof rack. A

secure system simplifies transporting

bikes and water sports equipment,

ensuring your gear arrives safely and

is ready to go when you reach your

destination.

Safety tips for roof rack use Always

check your vehicle’s weight limits

for roof-mounted gear and avoid

exceeding the 75 kg limit unless

specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer.

Before setting off, double-check that

everything is securely mounted,

balanced, and properly locked.

Periodically inspecting your roof rack

during stops is also a good habit,

especially when traveling on rougher

terrain.

Wherever you’re off to, enjoy the hols.

For more info on selecting a roof rack

or accessories for your next journey,

visit thulestore.co.za.
