Editor’s Note

A year of looking forward

his 40th edition of The Record reflects a year of refreshing changes at St Cross—

T much like the changing of seasons, with each transition bringing new faces and

opportunities that enrich our community in exciting ways.

Most notably, the biggest change has been our new Master Kate Mavor, who having

now completed her first year in post is well on way to making her mark at St Cross,

creating a bigger and better name for the college, not just in Oxford, but nationally and

internationally too. She is joined by our new Bursar Gemma Donaldson (pg 46), who has

been lighting up our hallways with her positive spirit ever since her arrival in April.

On completion of this publication we have also now welcomed a new Development

Director Milos Martinov (pg 45). He takes the helm from Richard Sved (pg 50) who

helped reignite the torch for St Cross following the pandemic. Milos is already putting

his stamp on things in the Development Office, and we can’t wait to see his plans unfold

over the next year.

It has been a pleasure to put together this landmark edition, and I’d like to thank

everyone who dedicated time to its production.

My many thanks,

Judith Palmer

“One of the great pleasures of being new is having

the opportunity to meet so many great people”

6 St Cross College, University of Oxford

Master’s Report

Kate Mavor CBE

Master

t has been a sheer delight for me to take up the role of Master of St Cross College

I from September 2023. The whole community has welcomed me so warmly and it feels

like an enormous privilege to take up the baton from my distinguished predecessors.

One of the great pleasures of being new is having the opportunity to meet so many

great people. It goes without saying that our students bring to the college the brightest

minds with a feverish curiosity and enthusiasm for discovery. Conversations are at the

heart of college life and I have been inspired to hear about the amazing work being

undertaken every day. I particularly enjoy the interdisciplinary nature of our student

body which allows for lively dining-hall interactions as people come at subjects from

very different perspectives. Factor in how international we are as a community and

you have the most stimulating and mind-broadening exchanges. We admitted 321 new

students in Michaelmas Term 2023 from 60 different countries – from all four corners of

the world as promised by the college motto “ad quattuor cardines mundi”.

I have also very much enjoyed meeting our distinguished fellowship. There are 65

Fellows on our Governing Body and finding out about each of them and their area of

research and specialism has been eye-opening. We were thrilled to see Professor Sir

Andrew Pollard elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society this year. It is great to know that

we have so many interesting, pioneering and thoughtful people supporting the College

and contributing to its future plans. We are indebted to all of our Fellows for their

involvement in college life, whether as college advisers to our students, bringing their

wisdom and ideas to our various committees or playing key roles such as Vice Master,

Dean, President of Common Room, Garden Master or Sports Fellow.

I was well supported in my first days by the interim leadership of the college. Professor

Rana Mitter was generous with his time in meeting up over the summer before I was

in post and inducting me in the ways of Mastership! I hear from everyone how much it

meant for the college to have him as the warm, welcoming and eminent public face of St

Cross in the interregnum after Carole Souter stepped down.

I am also indebted to Wilf Stephenson who stepped in to support the college as Interim

Bursar for a year and a half. He played a critical role in running the business of the

college in support of the interim Master, then stayed on for two more terms when

I arrived. Wilf ensured a steady hand on the tiller managing the college teams, and

oversaw the completion of the project to restore the West Wing. Wilf was with us until

Easter 2024 when the scaffolding finally came down! I was then delighted to welcome

our new Bursar, Gemma Donaldson, who joined us in April from Corpus Christi College

in Cambridge.

I should also like to thank our Vice Master, Professor Kevin Marsh, for the additional

time he has invested in college matters over the transition period.

One of the best things about being the Master of the College is meeting its long

standing supporters, some of whom go back many years with fond memories of the

Founders and the characters who made up the Common Room in its early days. I have

had enjoyable conversations with the generous donors to the college whose gifts

support infrastructure, activities and student scholarships. Those making significant

donations, giving regularly or making legacy pledges make an important contribution to

college funds.

We were delighted to accept a very generous donation in November from the Uehiro

Foundation in Tokyo, with which the College has a longstanding warm and fruitful

relationship. The foundation has now allowed us to make a long-term commitment to

supporting studies in practical ethics with the gift of an endowment - St Cross Uehiro

Scholarships for Future Generations Fund.

The gift was made as a token of deep appreciation for the distinguished leadership in

the field of Practical Ethics of Professor Julian Savulescu, Fellow of St Cross. The donors

also expressed their gratitude to Professor Tony Hope, Emeritus Fellow of St Cross, who

has played a key role in supporting the Foundation’s work. We are exceedingly grateful

to our Japanese friends.

We have also benefited in the year from generous funding from the College

Contribution Scheme which redistributes funding from some of Oxford’s richer colleges

to those with smaller endowments. We invested these funds this year in commissioning

research into how to boost our fundraising efforts and to strengthen overall the financial

sustainability of the college. This included conducting a survey of our whole community,

in which over 750 people took part. The resulting data will underpin our future plans,

with renewed focus on providing the best service, facilities and programmes to the

St Cross community. We have also been able invest in our alumni relations work in

advance of the arrival of our new Development Director in September, as well as in

refurbishment at the Annexe.

The college has been alive this year with activities organised both by the college and its

dynamic Student Representative Committee. We were pleased to host a university-wide

LGBTQ+ and Rainbow dinner in hall; a ceilidh after the Burns Supper kept everyone

dancing until late and the student BOPs were very well attended. Collaborative

teamwork inspired internationally themed hall dinners every Tuesday in term with a

particular highlight being the Diwali Hall where a Hindu grace was chanted by a member

of the Gurukul Fellowship programme resident in college at the time.

I was pleased to take part in the college carol service in December, a traditional

event dating back over 40 years now. It is a great benefit to us that we share not only

8 St Cross College, University of Oxford

premises, but a warm relationship with Pusey House whose magnificent chapel is the

perfect setting for our 7 Lessons and Carols. We are indebted to two stalwarts of the

carol service, Peter Ward Jones our conductor and Rev. Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch

the principal organiser for many years. Sadly both are stepping down this year but we

will proudly pass on the baton to their successors to keep this longstanding tradition

alive.

One of the privileges for my role as Master of the college is my seat on the Board of

Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum – our neighbouring treasure chest! It was especially

gratifying this year to see public exhibitions at the museum mounted by two of our very

own distinguished Fellows, An van Kamp (Bruegel to Rubens) and Shailendra Bhandare

(Money Talks). There is a long association between the museum’s curators and St Cross

College which is a prized cultural link.

The year ahead is full of promise as we work up the new plans for the college. It has

been very encouraging and inspiring for me as the newcomer to see how engaged our

community has been in contributing ideas and suggestions for building a better, stronger

college as we move into our 60th year. We look forward to seizing the opportunities

around us to raise more funds, engender a stronger sense of pride in belonging to

a college with a high academic profile and reputation, and more student and fellow

engagement in college life. Our staff and catering team do a brilliant job of providing a

friendly and supportive environment in which everyone can thrive – with this strong

team spirit we can look forward to a bright future!

Bursar’s Report

Gemma Donaldson

I

was delighted to join St Cross in April

2024 in time for Trinity Term and getting to

know Oxford during the lighter (if not initially

warmer!) summer months. I’ve been made to

feel so very welcome by the whole St Cross

community, and by new colleagues in the

wider University alike.

I have spent my first few months getting to

know St Cross – our community, our estate,

our current processes and ways of working.

I’ve enjoyed chatting with students, staff,

Fellows, alumni, members of the Common

Room and visitors at lunches and dinners. I’ve

proudly showed off our beautiful environment

to visiting friends and family, and promptly

rearranged my desk so I can look out on

Gemma Donaldson / Photo: John Cairns

Blackwell Quad and the comings and goings

during the day – it is a privilege to be a part of such a vibrant and engaged community.

I’ve got to know the students more quickly than I had anticipated – the Student

Representative Committee have kindly inducted me in some of the lighter hearted

elements of student life – and am constantly impressed by their achievements and

ambitions.

“I have prioritised meeting students in need of financial assistance

– this year we have spent £27k in support of students through a

range of interventions, including a generously supported fund to

support the costs of students eating in Hall for lunch”

These initiatives greatly build up our community and allow our talented students to

focus on their studies and research during their intensive time in Oxford.

I was fortunate to arrive just as the works to the West Wing concluded and am

incredibly grateful to Kenny Cox and his team for all the work in supporting its build

and essential remedial works. I have enjoyed seeing it each morning - with students

regularly working in the Douglas and Catherine Wigdor Room in the library opening up

onto the quad and the furniture on the patio – it is certainly a wonderful space to work

in and one St Cross can be rightly proud of.

I hope we can continue to invest in and develop our student spaces in college, and use

our limited estate footprint creatively.

Inevitably, arriving to a college after a period of transition with an interim Bursar, and a

new Master just appointed, some staff might reflect that they were “chomping at the bit”

to get going with new ideas that they have, and processes they want to review. I’ve been

impressed by the team’s resilience and approach to getting things done. We’ve already

got stuck in on team training, revising key governance documentation, and setting in

place new ways of working to underpin the culture and approach we want to grow

amongst the staff body. There is a lot to do, as there should be in an ambitious college,

and there is real momentum and positive energy about the direction of travel. A huge

and heartfelt thank you to all of the staff team who have contributed to the success of

St Cross this year – we could not have done it without you, whether behind the scenes

in Finance or front of house in the Porters’ Lodge – I feel very fortunate to be working

with such an enthusiastic and dedicated team who without a doubt make St Cross feel

like home for so many of us.

So whilst it has only been a short term for me so far at St Cross, I am looking forward to

working with the Fellowship, staff and students to shape our plans, and increasing the

engagement of all areas of the community in college life in the coming year. I very much

look forward to meeting many more of you in the year ahead and hope to have much to

report in next year’s Record.

Domestic Bursar’s Report

Suzy Hodge

new era dawned with the arrival of

A new Master Kate Mavor in MT23. She

was welcomed in our inimitable way with an

introduction to staff and fellows over tea and

cake. The baking continued with welcoming

freshers’ activities and Junior Deans Saba and

Ben extended their very popular Welfare Tea &

Cakes, which has proved to be a great success,

in addition to keeping things running smoothly

out of hours.

The Events team managed a full programme

of Hall nights, guest dinners and family events

throughout the year including organising

refreshments for the lovely Hymns and Pimms

Ascension Day celebration hosted by Pusey

House. There was great demand to repeat the

Suzy Hodge / Photo: John Cairns

successful PRIDE dinner from the previous

year and the re-run proved to be just as successful and colourful. Justine Shepperson,

Conference and Events Manager, left in January and Sarah Birch stepped into the

interim role from the University Temporary Staffing Service.

Rachel Walker, Suzy Hodge, Sharon Durno and Justine Shepperson

With the West Wing remedial work not quite completed when Accommodation filled

the study bedrooms with freshers in MT23, the work continued and was finally finished

in May 2024. The disruption to residents was controlled as much as possible, and rents

were discounted for the full year, but all were glad when the scaffolding finally came

down and the Lecture theatre, large and small Seminar rooms were brought back into

use. The conversion of the study bedrooms to en suite rooms at the Annexe continued

in the summer of 2024, finishing the three flats to enable the next phase of converting

48 St Cross College, University of Oxford

the redundant bathrooms into communal social spaces. Additionally, the Estates team

caught up with some of the projects deferred during West Wing remedial works like the

Caroline Miles renovation with new kitchen, bar redecoration, Saugman redecoration

with dishwasher fitted in the kitchen and a new kitchen fitted in the South Wing

accommodation.

The Catering team were joined by new Manager Mina

Barnard on 4th March and a Sustainability Fair was held in

the Saugman Common Room on 11th April. This included

Project Knead with a selection of breads and the science

behind bread making, Nourish to Flourish combining

food with Mood and Roots of Oxford showcasing local

produce including details of production. All with samples

abounding to illustrate the various initiatives that

followed on from the previous fair (which covered plantbased

options, cutting down on meat and waste and

using sustainable ingredients). The team continued to

provide excellent food with a piece de resistance cheese

dish at the Trinity Term tasting dinner of Goat Cheese

ice cream served in mini cornets with a tiny spoonful of

onion marmalade inside (it was a very warm evening so

most refreshing although it got slightly confused with

pudding).

The team of Porters kept the College secure in the face of protests and occupations

across Oxford and continued to be the same helpful and friendly point of contact for

College members and visitors.

As always I would like to give huge thanks to the whole Domestic team and we all look

forward to implementing the new College strategy in the next year.

Alumni & Development Report

Richard Sved

t has been another busy and productive year for the Alumni & Development team. We

I are very proud once again to have provided a wide range of events and engagement

opportunities for Members of College and Alumni, and it is such a pleasure to interact

with our supporters. We are always keen to learn why the College holds a place in your

hearts, to understand what moves you to support us and to engage with, and above all

else it is always a delight to hear from you.

We start by thanking each and every one of our friends and donors, including over

100 1965 club members, many of whom are giving to us regularly. In addition to a very

generous gift from the Uehiro Foundation in Tokyo, our donations in the last 12 months

have also included legacies (as well as pledges of legacy support) and we are honoured

to be supported in this way. Our thanks and sincere appreciation to each and every

one of you – you are helping us to provide the best environment we can within which

graduates can thrive.

By supporting us, you are helping us to remove anything that might stand in the way

of a graduate maximising their opportunity and fulfilling their academic and personal

potential at Oxford. And as we look to the future:

You can help us to create the most welcoming and accessible environment, as fullyfunded

scholarships can reduce the number of graduates who turn down their place for

financial reasons.

You can help us to create the most intellectually stimulating environment, through

the award of prizes, and by increasing opportunities for our Fellows to undertake

research.

You can help us to create the most nurturing environment as a home for graduate

students, by providing a financial safety net when unexpected challenges arise.

Thank you to everyone who is helping us to deliver our mission through their generous

donations, and if you’re interested in joining them, contact us now. We are looking

forward to talking to you.

Our thanks also to everyone who has been engaged in our Alumni and supporter

community. We have been pleased to be able to offer Alumni Mentors, who have been

kindly able to share their expertise and experience in everything from banking and

finance to publishing and international aid with our current graduate students. We

have also very much enjoyed welcoming our alumni and our friends to events such

as the Encaenia Prizegiving and Dinner, St Cross in the City, Fred’s Lunch (our annual

alumni lunch), 1965 Club Evening (our annual dinner for College supporters), the Audrey

Blackman Society Lunch and the Neil Kensit Memorial Tabla Concert. Look out for more

as we gear up for our 60th anniversary!

50 St Cross College, University of Oxford

Meanwhile, the alumni and friends e-newsletter has continued to develop and we send

it to our alumni, supporters, Fellows, MCR and friends of the College. It includes a wide

variety of College content including news, updates, information about upcoming events

as well as fundraising campaigns for those who have opted in to receive them. If you are

not receiving the e-newsletter and would like to, please do not hesitate to get in touch

with us. In addition, Crossword, the St Cross magazine, which wasn’t published in 2023

due to resource limitations, will be back for the 2024/2025 academic year, so do watch

this space.

Our thanks and appreciation also to everyone who has contributed to the smooth

running of our staff team, including James Brazier, Savi Joglekar, Judith Palmer, Reanna

Bowen and Michelle Harrall-Ager. We were sad, however, that Annabelle Saunders left

the team in the last year, and extend our thanks to her for everything she has done for

St Cross College, and send her good wishes for the future. Annabelle was replaced as

head of the team in the interim for six months by me, and we are looking forward to

being joined by our new Director of Development in Michaelmas term 2024.

As ever, it has also been a pleasure to work with the Student Representative Committee

and the wider student community, and we have been so pleased to have their support

and input to help us improve how we communicate and engage with the whole

College community. Thank you to all of you for your work and important contributions,

which we have greatly valued. We’re very pleased to continue to work with remaining

members and extend our best wishes to those who have finished their courses and left

the College. Please don’t be strangers, and do stay in touch!

Finally, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to every single person who has

contributed to our vibrant community at St Cross College in so many different ways,

whether they are alumni, Members of Common Room, Fellows, staff, supporters,

students or friends. We are proud to reflect on what we have achieved over the last

year, while also looking forward to the many joyous, exciting and interesting occasions

and events we have in store in the new academic year. We are also proud of what our

alumni community and our supporters and friends have achieved, and look forward to

staying in touch with you and to seeing you soon.

You are always welcome – once a St Crosser, always a St Crosser!

not only for the large number in attendance,

but also the additional challenge of the

armillary sphere sundial on the front lawn,

posing a conundrum for our photographers

Gillman and Soane, and taken in good humour

by students and the new Master Kate Mavor,

who presided as Dean of Degrees for the

ceremony. We continued with the traditional

St Cross Fresher’s Fortnight which provides

an excellent opportunity over an extended

period for our new students to get to know

each other before the intensity of term begins.

Many thanks to the members of the Student

Representative Committee from 22-23 who organised an excellent, varied programme

of events and activities, to ensure the new students had a positive experience on arrival.

The introductory talks led by the Master, ensured the students were welcomed into the

College community and provided with the key information on college life, and briefly

introduced to staff teams, the Junior Deans, College Counsellor and College GP Dr

Laurence Leaver who provided his comprehensive health guidance in good humour for

our newly arrived students. The College GP practice continue to provide an excellent,

easily accessible service to our students supporting their physical and mental wellbeing.

Our Communications team provided timely targeted bulletins to our Freshers and

returning students, and mechanisms for students to link up with other St Crossers

before arrival and during the Fresher’s fortnight. We are very grateful to Judith Palmer,

our Communications Manager for her creative use of social media, and development of

informative newsletters to ensure students receive key messages relating to both their

academic life and social activities in the wider university and College. We encourage

students to send items that would be of interest to the College community relating to

their academic, sporting or other activities in the University to our Communications

team as we continue to seek ways to share the interests and achievements of St

Crossers, establishing connections between those with shared interests.

The 2023-24 new cohort of 317 students comprised 76 commencing their studies at

PGR level, and 241 enrolling on PGT programmes (of these 18 were studying part-time).

10 students joined us with a College affiliation undertaking the DClin Psych programme.

56 St Cross College, University of Oxford

There were 624 students enrolled at the College in Michaelmas 2023. A small number

of students commenced their DPhil programmes in Hilary and Trinity terms.

Our Admissions Administrator Eamonn Deeley undertook the challenging task of

processing 526 offers to applicants, and offers were converted to unconditional at the

earliest opportunity for students. With our students navigating the University offer

process, and in many cases also applying for visas and undertaking all the logistical

challenges of moving from Overseas, we continue to seek to refine the process within

our scope. The relationship between the Academic Office, Departments and Graduate

Admissions continues to strengthen, and the continual digitisation of the processes

leads to more timely sharing of information and works toward an enhanced experience

for students and stakeholders concerned.

In 2023-24 our new students came to us from 60 countries. Registration is encouraged

in person in College where programme start dates and travel logistics make this possible,

and this continues to facilitate the opportunity for connections with other St Crossers

to be developed before the start of term. New arrivals had the opportunity to ask any

immediate questions of the academic office team, our IT support team Leslie Isaac and

Dominic Rudman; with the IT support offered by the team particularly well received.

On behalf of the College I would like to express our thanks to the Welcome Team for

23-24 for their vital contribution to making those first days and weeks at St Cross easier

for our new intake. Tours of College were

offered to students and our Librarian,

Philippa Taney once again provided advice

and guidance, on the library, study space

facilities in College and an introduction

to the library system in Oxford. We are

grateful to Philippa and Serafijn Gentil

the Library Assistant for their continued

efforts to improve the library service,

study space and experience for all of our

students and library users.

The Student Representative Council

for 2023-24 led by President Giordano

Epifani and Vice President Mantate

Mlotshwa worked very hard to ensure

a diverse programme of activities and

events for Freshers with something

for everyone. From visits to museums,

picnics in the park, evening socials and

the popular Sip and Paint sessions led by

SRC Art Representative Emily Carrington-

Freeman who also designed the artwork

for the Welcome Team T-Shirts. We are

extremely grateful for their input not only

to Fresher’s fortnight, but in establishing

a highly active Student Representative Committee that was fully engaged with students

and the staff and Fellows in College to represent the students in many areas of College

life. The organisation of Fresher’s fortnight was again a success due to the efforts of the

Events Manager, Justine Shepperson and Events Assistant, Justyna Skalska who are key

to the smooth running of the College and student run events. The Events and Catering

team Baxter Storey again provided excellent catering offerings across a wide range of

events. Our IT Manager, Leslie Isaac further developed the support and accessibility to

IT support for students during registration, troubleshooting any IT queries and problems

working to get their IT in place in time for them to begin their studies and importantly

connect with family and friends.

The Welcome Dinners for new St Crossers, took place in late October and early

November. The dinners provided a forum for College Advisors to meet with their new

advisees and other students in this celebratory format, which for many is their first

experience of a formal dinner at Oxford. College Advisors are a rich source of support

and guidance to students outside of their academic departments, in 2023-24 advisors

and advisees where possible, met at least once a term either face to face in College, or

where more convenient online. The annual Graduate Consultation round took place

in Hilary term 2024, this gives students the opportunity to discuss challenges and

successes with their advisor and any relevant actions to be taken or successes to be

recorded and shared as appropriate. The College are most grateful to the Fellows,

Emeritus Fellows and JRF’s for their commitment to this role.

As Head of Welfare at St Cross, I work closely with the staff and student welfare team

in College, and University wellbeing services to support students and signpost them

to the most appropriate source of support. To further develop accessibility to welfare

services in College, I am available for in person meetings and online 1:1’s where this is

preferable to students, enabling those who may be studying overseas to access support.

This includes liaising with the University Disability Advisory Service as College Disability

58 St Cross College, University of Oxford

Co-ordinator. In MT23 I again offered 1:1’s for students who wished to talk through the

Disability support services available to them including adjustments. We thank Student

Disability Rep, Hannah Rosenheim for her work in supporting students with disabilities

in College, Hannah produced a guide to University disability support for students that

was circulated to all St Cross students.

College Counsellor Elizabeth Treasure continued to support our students in College,

offering in-person and online appointments, and further supported students in her

Counselling role with University Counselling Service. Elizabeth has been a key member

of the Welfare team at St Cross during 2023-24, and we are extremely grateful for her

work in College. Elizabeth retired at the end of Trinity Term 2024 and we will welcome a

new College Counsellor, Kai Yang for the 2024-25 academic year.

The work of the welfare focused members of the Student Representative Committee,

and our Junior Deans with their innovations and ideas to further develop a sense of

community among the student body was appreciated by staff and students. With the

highly successful Welfare Teas, Junior Dean Teas and drop-ins, and practical initiatives

such as Welfare Boxes, and board games, encouraging students to move away from

their studies for a time and connect with other students in a supportive and informal

environment. We are most grateful to them. The College supported the training of 3

Peer Supporters in 2023-24, Yiran Ge, Vrinda Jariwala, and Huishu Wang. They received

University training and ongoing support in their roles as peer supporters.

Academically 2023-24 was again a successful year. At the time of writing the results of

172 Masters and BPhil/MPhil students are published and we are pleased to report that

58 achieved a Distinction, 66 were awarded a Merit, and 44 passed their course. Of

our DPhil students 54 received Leave to Supplicate during 2023-24 and we congratulate

all on their exceptional achievement.

Degree Day ceremonies were held throughout the year, Academic Office Secretary

Sasha Travers, again used her detailed knowledge, to support graduands through

the formal processes of attending a ceremony and oversaw the day itself ensuring a

memorable day for graduands and their families and friends. St Cross students attended

graduation ceremonies during 2023-24 with more graduating in absentia.

We thank our Deans of Degrees; Francis Leneghan, Joerg Friedrichs, Stanley Ulijaszek

and An Van Camp, for presiding over the Degree Days in 2023-24, and the smaller

matriculation ceremonies held throughout the academic year.

We look forward to working with staff, Fellows and students in 2024-25.

Deans’ Report

Prof Heather Hamill, Benjamin Gladstone and Saba Ishrat

he Dean and Junior Deans ongoing focus continues to be the provision of guidance

and welfare support to the student body, while upholding discipline across the

college community.

Throughout the year, the Dean and Junior Deans have maintained close working

relationships with the Master, Bursar, Domestic Bursar, Porters, Academic Office,

and the wider bursarial team. This collaborative effort has ensured that matters of

student discipline and welfare were handled efficiently and with great care. We would

like to express our deep appreciation to all staff members who have supported our

work. Special thanks are due to the Porters, whose tireless efforts underpin the daily

functioning and safety of the College. Without this collective support, the positive

environment at St Cross would not be possible.

Saba Ishrat Prof Heather Hamill Benjamin Gladstone

This academic year marked significant transitions within St Cross. We bid farewell to

our former Bursar, Wilf Stephenson, whose contributions to St Cross are incalculable,

and he will be dearly missed. We were delighted to welcome Kate Mavor as our new

Master and Gemma Donaldson as the new Bursar. Both have already made impactful

contributions, continuing to enhance the vibrancy and support systems within the

College. They have worked closely with the Decanal team providing tremendous

support and many new ideas that have augmented our work and improved the St Cross

community. Their leadership has brought fresh perspectives, and we look forward to the

continued positive influence they will bring to the college.

We were delighted to welcome Benjamin Gladstone, who transitioned from Oriel

College to join us as a Junior Dean this year. Ben has quickly become a vital member of

our team, significantly enhancing our efforts to support student well-being and maintain

discipline.

The Junior Deans continue to work closely with the Site Wardens, who are essential

members of the team. We would like to highlight the valuable contributions of George

Nikolou, Tymoteusz Pieszko, and Hannah Contreras. Their dedication and presence have

60 St Cross College, University of Oxford

been crucial to our team’s work, ensuring that

both the Main Site and the Annexe were well

supported.

The atmosphere across the College and the

Annexe has been vibrant and constructive

this year. The credit for this belongs with the

students, who have worked diligently to ensure

a welcoming and joyous environment while

ensuring that behavioral issues were kept to

a minimum. A highlight of the year was the reopening of the West Wing and college

quad, which has once again become a central space for students to relax, socialize, and

enjoy activities including rounders, and a viewing party for the UEFA Finals. This lively

atmosphere has been a testament to the efforts of the student community and the

welcoming nature of St Cross.

The standout achievement this year was the continuation of the Junior Deans’ Tea and

Cake events, generously supported by the College and SRC budgets. These events gave

students the opportunity to take a break, relax, and build community with one another

and with the Decanal team. We would like to extend our thanks to the Events and

Catering teams, whose exceptional work ensured the success of these gatherings.

Overall, St Cross has enjoyed a productive, vibrant, and peaceful academic year. The

Dean, Junior Deans, and the entire college community have worked tirelessly to ensure

the wellbeing of students, whose outstanding achievements are a credit to the college,

and who can be readily seen throughout Oxford, proudly sporting our college crest. As

we move into the next academic year, we are committed to continuing to foster a safe,

supportive, and enriching environment for everyone.

President Of Common Room’s Report

Fr Mark Stafford

T

Fr Mark Stafford

here is a phrase commonly repeated by one of my

colleagues when asked, “How’s life?”. Rich and full, he

responds. Despite the lurking suspicion that this is code for

unmanageably busy, or constantly stressful, I am persuaded

that he means it quite literally. And if I was to reach for a

phrase to sum up the common life of the College this past year,

I can imagine myself saying the same.

“Rich and full. With all that entails…”

I said last year we had never enjoyed a more complete, or more engaged, SRC in the

recent life of the College, but in fact this year has repeated and reinforced this as a new

pattern. The Common Room Committee has continued to be marked by good humour

and enthusiasm - confronting the inevitable challenges and complexities of our shared

structures and spaces, and identifying new and exciting opportunities, not least through

the SRC’s broad representation of the student body, and active concern for student

well-being.

As well as sincere thanks to all the staff who have contributed so much in this regard,

and to Amy Styring, acting President of Common Room in Hilary, particular gratitude

is owed to those who occupied the vital roles of Junior Deans (and presided over

another year of well ordered relations among the student community), and the SRC

Officers, especially to the Student President, Giordano Epifani; Mantate Mlotshwa

(VP); Miles Donahue (Secretary) and the Executive Team - for constantly listening to,

and advocating for, the student body in all its diversity, and ensuring constructive

communication amongst all the College stake-holders, not least when faced with

differences of opinion or perspective.

From an excellent Freshers’ Fortnight through three jam-packed terms of extraordinary

meetings, well-received Welfare Teas, successful workshops, imaginative BOPS, special

dinners and masterfully hosted quizzes, there has been a lot to applaud. But it is the

commitment to collaboration - which lies behind any of those initiatives or successes,

and is a hallmark of our Common Room - that the College can be most proud of. As a

new Master, and Bursar, have sought to identify, in their first year, all that is best about

St Cross, and steer us towards a fuller realisation of our huge potential, it has been

encouraging to see these “Round Table” values, that are integral to our identity, finding

their place at the centre of that process. It may not be clear which particular quests lie

in our immediate future, but to paraphrase TH White’s King Arthur - ‘at the heart of any

healthy body of people, is a table all of them can sit at’. Ideally with a decent coffee.

Library and Archive Report

Philippa Taney, Librarian & Archivist

his year we finally said goodbye to

the West Wing building project,

welcoming back a semblance of normality

to the library. In what at times had been a

trying project I would like to thank all our

library users for their forbearance, patience

and continued support. It was a long and

sometimes bumpy road, but we got there!

During this time we made some changes to

the library environment, to make it a more

conducive study space for our readers.

To this end, we thank our IT Manager

Leslie Isaac for supplying us with our large

monitors and adapters, and our Academic

Registrar Sharon Durno and former

Bursar Wilf Stephenson for supporting

the purchase of our height adjustable

desks. We also added a reading nook with

comfortable chairs as a welcoming place to

take a study break if needed.

Christmas book installation

The year got off to a busy start with well attended drop in sessions for our incoming

freshers and this set the tone for the rest of the academic year. So far we have

accessioned 687 books, 141 of these being reader requests, 154 being reading list,

equality and diversity, welfare and study skills material and 306 being gifts, some of

which were kindly donated by our previous Masters Prof. Rana Mitter and Carole

Souter, CBE. We also continue to receive books from Boydell and Brewer Publishers to

add our wonderful James Currey Collection housed in the Wigdor Room, and participate

in CLeF, the University wide system for colleges purchasing eResources.

Just before the start of the academic year we went live with Alma – our new library

management software. Alma underpins all our library technical services functions as well

as Solo, the library catalogue for Oxford University. It all transitioned relatively smoothly

and has delivered an enhanced user experience for those using Solo and all its facets. At

present the archive is predominantly still residing at our annex, however we are finally in

a position to proceed with setting up a system for our born digital documents, ensuring

their security and longevity, while saving on much needed space.

Finally, I would like to thank our student library assistant Serafijn Gentils for all of his

hard work and commitment to the library over the past year.

mandates system, which was devised at the end of the First World War to place the

former colonies of the German and Ottoman empires under international supervision.

Two 2024 Marcus Harmelin Travel Prizes were awarded respectively to Yiran Ge and

Vincent Nolan. Yiran’s proposed project aims to explore the cultural and affective

perspective of Jewish people currently living in Germany, considering the multi-level

influence of historical origin and cultural norms on their current well-being. Vincent’s

proposed project aims to delineate the ways in which early-20th-century German

Jewish theology shaped the philosopher Walter Benjamin’s conception of utopia and

hence contribute to debates in contemporary utopian studies.

The 2024 Dick Repp Prize was awarded to Juliet Merchant for her proposed project to

present a restored Soviet silent film, The House on the Volcano by Amo Bek-Nazaryan

for which she composed the new accompanying music, as a première at the Museum of

Modern Art in New York.

Several scholars and award winners and the Master

during Encaenia 2024

66 St Cross College, University of Oxford

Many thanks are due to all the Fellows on the Scholarships and Prizes Selection Panel

over the past year for their hard work in reviewing applications and selecting these

scholars and prizewinners on behalf of the College. The College currently has around

650 graduate students and a number of our Master’s students (either the one-year MSt/

MSc or the two-year MPhil) did especially well by achieving a Distinction overall in their

courses.

The College’s programme of study skills provision has continued to be successfully

developed for students in order to support them in their studies and to optimise

academic progress with suggestions from students on areas of specific interest. Various

topics were covered from sessions on resilience, academic literacy, thesis writing

and exam anxiety to workshops on time management, handling research data, public

speaking and strategic career planning with CV best practice as well as a new session

on using AI as a digital skill. At a showcase for some of these skills, the annual Research

Presentation Prize Competition for students was won by Emma Watts for her talk

entitled “Immune Attenuation to Improve Plant Biofactories in Molecular Farming”.

This year the 10th Lorna Casselton Memorial Lecture was held on the 16th May 2024

and given by Professor Matthew Botvinick (Google DeepMind) on the topic of “AI

and the Challenge of Human Cooperation”. The lecture video is available to view on the

College website.

The St Cross Centre for the History & Philosophy of Physics (HAPP) has continued to

flourish particularly with the livestreaming in tandem with the in-person event which

enables the participation of several hundred attendees from all around the world. The

three termly one-day conferences were “Polymaths Across the Eras” (Michaelmas Term

2023), “Physics and the Science of Living Things” (Hilary Term 2024) and “The Philosophy of

Cosmology” (Trinity Term 2024). Videos of all the event talks are available on the HAPP

website.

The College’s cultural and enrichment programme saw a variety of musical events

across the academic year (please see the Report on Musical Activities at St Cross for

details). Students and Fellows continued their annual friendly rivalry in 2023-2024 with

each of the College’s termly General Knowledge Quiz having some high suspense final

rounds! This year it was the turn of Clare Hall to host the annual St Cross-Clare Hall

Fellows’ Exchange Dinner, which was a very sociable event held on a balmy evening in

Cambridge on the 3rd July 2024.

As part of its commitment to widening participation for graduate study at Oxford and

increasing the diversity of its community, the College was very pleased to welcome

over 60 interns on this year’s UNIQ+ Graduate Access Programme to afternoon tea

at St Cross on the 2nd July 2024. The cohort of UNIQ+ interns were in Oxford on

the University’s flagship graduate access programme, working on a variety of summer

projects across various disciplines - during their visit they received an insight into life as

a graduate student as well as into being a graduate student at St Cross and hopefully

some may return in the future as new St Cross students.

Garden Master’s Report

Professor Mark Robinson

here has been a renewal of interest in gardening amongst the students. It has

emerged that in the summer of 2023, tomato plants were secretly grown the

other side of the fence around the works area for the West Wing. In Hilary the Student

Environmental Rep offered volunteers for gardening, who planted out herbaceous

bedding plants in the front quad. The primulas followed by pansies put on good displays

but it looks as if we will have to wait until next year for flowers on the sweet Williams.

The building work is complete and the scaffolding has been removed. Requests have

been received from the students that the College ought to have area of “wild garden”

in the back quad. This idea would be very much limited by the space available and the

other functions of the garden. However as an experiment, the rather tired sprawling

rock roses in the NE corner of the border facing the hall will be replaced with a planting

of native hay meadow species.

Catering Report

Mina Barnard, General Manager (BaxterStorey)

2023/2024 was a year of many changes and new

beginnings for our team.

First of all, our previous General Manager, Marta, has

now moved into a different role within our company. As

Operational Support Manager, Marta continues to be

involved and offer support to us at St Cross as well as our

other sites in Oxford. Because of this change, I have been

given the opportunity to step into her old position and

it truly has been a privilege to join such a special team in

such a special environment.

Mina Barnard

I am lucky to have been welcomed into such a talented and experienced group and

to become part of the long and established relationship between BaxterStorey and St

Cross College. It has been a pleasure to get to know everyone on the Catering Team

and to see the commitment with which they strive to produce innovative and delicious

food and to always deliver an exceptionally high standard of service. The support from

college staff have also been remarkable.

Whilst there have been a number of changes, the challenge is to find the balance

between making necessary, gradual improvements whilst preserving practices that

work. We have started rotating the chefs in the kitchen to keep challenging and honing

their skills but try to still have fun and support each other in the process.

DJ, our Executive Chef, has been putting our new pizza oven to good use and has

started making gorgeous pizzas – a new lunch time offering available on Wednesdays

to Fridays in the Café. DJ also continues to surprise and delight us with his attention

to detail and adventurous flavour combinations for the dinners at St Cross. His goats

cheese ice cream cones caused much debate on the night and I am sure it will be talked

about for many years to come!

We are extremely proud of Joseph, our

very talented Chef de Partie, who has

not only passed his Level 2 Qualification

at the BaxterStorey Chef’s Academy, but

has managed to do so with distinction!

This truly is a remarkable achievement

with lots of hard work put into it and

also guidance and support from DJ in

mentoring him. Joseph has now taken

over more responsibility in the kitchen

and treated us to many lovely hot

lunches this term and we look forward to

watching him develop.

Scallops

Beetroot Starter

Another exciting change has been that Ula will move from her role as Kitchen Porter

into a Front of House Position. We are looking forward to supporting her in this change

and helping develop her career.

It is thrilling to be able to offer such diverse dining experiences at St Cross and in my

first five months as Catering General Manager, there have already been many highlights.

From the detailed finesse and specialised service required for the formal black tie and

gourmet dinners, to the festive relaxed feel of the Summer Soiree. From our first fully

plant-based dinner to a daily offer of fresh homemade bread. Being included in the light

hearted games and traditions at the Sports Dinner; entertained by a live Drag Act at the

LGBTQ+ Rainbow Dinner and even learning the Sabrage, the diverse range of events

enable us to challenge our chefs and delight with good food and service in a variety of

settings and formats.

It has also been lovely to make use of the new West Wing and Quad during good

weather and we have ended the year on a high note with a Wedding followed by a Pizza

and Pimms Garden Party to celebrate the birthday of our new college bursar.

We look forward to what next year will bring!

Art Report

Kate Mavor, Master

he Art Committee has turned its mind to good housekeeping in what has been a

quiet year. We have considered how to ensure our much treasured collections are

kept safe. In particular, we have developed a salvage plan to deploy in the event of a

fire. We have taken advice from the Fire Service and from the Head of Conservation at

the Ashmolean Museum and will build the protection of pictures and artefacts into the

college business continuity plan.

We have continued our work on reglazing the Audrey Blackman watercolour collection

with museum-grade glass. It is vital to protect these works of art from light damage so

that we can pass them on to future generations with minimal deterioration.

We were delighted with a donation from one of our MCR members and friends of 5

silver candlesticks, inscribed with the St Cross shield, to adorn formal dinners in hall. On

the advice of the donor, we commissioned short candlesticks so that they would not

block the view of the person sitting opposite at dinner!

The college photography competition attracted 46 submissions. The winner was Natalie

Steer with “Beyond the Great Wall, China”. Runner up was Guopeng Chen with “Bridge”

and in third place was “Escaping from the Reality of Global Warming” from Clinton Yeo.

The photographs were displayed at the Encaenia prize-giving dinner and the winning

photograph will be framed to hang in college.

We have advertised the volunteer role of Art Registrar which we hope to fill from

Music Report

Dr Jo Ashbourn, Senior Tutor (AA&P)

& Rev. Professor Diarmaid N.J. MacCulloch

he College has continued to support a vibrant musical life with diverse concerts

and other musical events throughout the academic year. During its annual

celebration in October for Black History Month, the College was delighted to bring some

musical cheer to Michaelmas Term 2023 by welcoming acclaimed band The Rocksteady

Royals for its first ever ska and reggae concert in the Pusey House Chapel. The

audience of over 120 people heard the Rocksteady Royals perform a programme that

celebrated the roots and cultural history of ska and reggae music with the huge musical

contributions from so many performers, including songs by Bob Marley, Toots and the

Maytals, and Jimmy Cliff. The band’s rousing playing and singing soon had the audience

toe-tapping, swaying and eventually enthusiastically participating in a demonstration of

several well-known Jamaican dance moves!

The Rocksteady Royals performance

The following term saw a special combined musical and dance cultural event partnered

with Somerville College to showcase ballet in the Flora Anderson Hall at Somerville. The

audience of over 150 people saw the guest ballet performers, led by Dr Roya Ghafele, St

Cross Member of Common Room, perform a one-hour programme of ballet pieces from

Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Minkus’s La Bayadère as well as the beautiful solo

dance, The Dying Swan to showcase the world of classical dance and also neo-classical

ballet to music from George Gershwin and Frederic Chopin. Alongside the sublime music,

the ballet performance aimed to demonstrate how dance can fuel scholarship and

creativity for ballerinas who are also academics.

To round off the academic year, thanks to the efforts and dedication of St Cross

Member of Common Room, Caroline Howard-Jones and St Cross alumni Noel Lobley

and Nomi Dave, the Neil Kensit Memorial Concert was held in Trinity Term 2024 in the

Pusey House Chapel to commemorate Neil’s memory and his longstanding contributions

to community music-making. This showcased music played by musicians from the

Oxford Gamelan Society on the gamelan, the traditional Indonesian ensemble musical

instrument of the Javanese, Sundanese and

Balinese peoples made up predominantly

of percussive instruments, and by the

esteemed tabla player, Pandit Sanju Sahai on

the tabla, which is one of the most popular

percussion instruments of the Indian Subcontinent

frequently played in popular, folk

and classical music, accompanied by Kiranpal

Singh. The concert included a special performance

by Jaymini Sahai of Kathak dance,

a major form of Indian classical dance that

communicates stories from the Hindu epics

and mythology.

Common Room

The collection following the concert was for the Hélène La Rue Scholarship Fund to

support the College scholarships in Music established by the late Dr Hélène La Rue,

St Cross Fellow and Curator of the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, who was

a vocal proponent of these musical traditions at Oxford during her lifetime. Thanks to

Hélène’s longstanding support, both tabla and gamelan have continued to flourish in

community groups, bringing together Oxford students and local residents.

Rev. Professor Diarmaid N.J.

MacCulloch

In a winning combination, long-standing choir members

were augmented by new recruits from the College

and long-standing friends for the annual Advent and

Christmas Carol Service in Pusey Chapel. Both choir

and congregation were as large as any in recent years.

Choir items were perhaps even more exacting than

in the past but performed with the usual enthusiasm

and effectiveness. After the plainsong Advent Prose

introit, the choir proceeded through Advent via Otto

Goldschmidt’s ‘Tender Shoot’ towards ‘Today the Virgin

comes to the cave’ in John Tavener’s challenging setting.

The mood grew more mellow through Sir John Rutter’s ‘What sweeter music can we

bring’, followed by the bitter-sweetness of ‘Dormi Jesu’ in Edmund Rubbra’s austere

version; David Willcocks gently augmented the Basque ‘Infant King’ and Gaudete

would have gladdened the hearts of Steeleye Span. Johann Sebastian Bach would

have been equally pleased to hear his harmonisation of the Lutheran chorale ‘O little

one sweet’ and finally the choir personfully girded its loins to the climaxes of William

Mathias trumpeting the medieval text ‘A babe is born all of a May’. All this was woven

round familiar congregational carols and the traditional Christmas bible readings. Peter

Ward Jones as choirmaster and Diarmaid MacCulloch as organiser are hugely grateful

to Common Room member Peter Lynan for organ accompaniment, to the Pusey House

team for organising the liturgy, to Paul Wicking and his colleagues in the Lodge and to

all in the College catering team for their help. 2023 was the last year when the team

of Peter and Diarmaid acted as choirmaster and organiser of the Carol Service for the

College; between them they have clocked up around half a century of service. They

send their warm wishes for the future success of the event.

Student Representative Committee Report

Giordano Epifani

he SRC has worked tirelessly this year to ensure

T that everyone’s time at St Cross has been as

sociable, memorable, and fun as possible. The year

kicked off with an incredibly lively Freshers’ Week,

featuring up to four events per day, including wine and

painting, a cooking competition, croquet, and games.

Our efforts set a new standard across Oxford for what

a model Freshers’ Week should look like. The twoweek

extravaganza culminated in a sold-out Hawaiianthemed

BOP, where floral shirts, leis, and beach

Gio Epifani, Student President sarongs transformed the hall into a tropical paradise.

Throughout the year, we made it a priority to host at least one social event every week,

which included bar and game nights, karaoke, and a BOP every term - each drawing

fantastic attendance and further tightening the St Cross community bond. The social

calendar reached its crescendo with the Summer Soiree, a glamorous event featuring

fantastic food, drinks, live music, and elegant decorations, making for an unforgettable

evening in the quads.

Sport

Sports remained a cornerstone of SRC activities. While our Sports Day was

unfortunately rained out, the St Cross/Wolfson rowing team demonstrated its strength,

achieving impressive results throughout the year. We introduced a range of exciting

new events, such as Taekwondo sessions, a

viewing of the England vs Spain football final

in the quad, a group trip to Summer Eights,

and the Banister Mile run - all of which were

enthusiastically received. Popular staples like

Thursday yoga in the quad returned, providing

a peaceful outlet for relaxation and fitness.

The year concluded with our Sports Dinner,

where over 100 St Crossers gathered to

celebrate their achievements in style.

Welfare

This year’s welfare reps, a fantastic male and female duo, worked tirelessly to ensure

student well-being was at the forefront of SRC initiatives. Fortnightly Afternoon Teas

allowed students to unwind and enjoy delicious treats prepared by our talented kitchen

staff. Sundays became synonymous with relaxation through cozy pizza and movie nights.

SRC Team

In a new initiative, we branched out with Pottery Making events, sparking creativity

while offering a soothing mental escape. The SRC also invested in new garden and board

games to further enhance the welfare of the community.

LGBTQ+

Our commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment was stronger

than ever, thanks to our LGBTQ+ rep remaining on the committee for another year. This

allowed us to maintain a robust lineup of events, including tea and rainbow cake socials,

Halloween drinks, and participation in the Oxford LGBTQ+ parade - all of which were

well-attended. We also hosted two Thursday LGBTQ+ Drinks nights, where the St Cross

queer community connected with the wider university. Continuing a two-year tradition,

we once again organized Oxford’s largest intercollegiate LGBTQ+ formal dinner,

“Rainbow Awakening,” with over 120 graduate students in attendance. The event was a

colorful celebration, made even more special by a delightful performance from one of

Oxford’s finest drag queens.

Other Initiatives

This year, the SRC played a key role in the completion of the bar renovation, which

included new bean bags, furniture, and ceiling repainting, along with the creation of a

new signature drink. In an effort to promote sustainability, our Environmental Rep and

Quartermaster organized two events aimed at reducing waste - clothes exchanges and

donations of pre-loved items among college members. The Career Rep arranged over 10

webinars, connecting students with employers and business leaders to explore various

business models. Additionally, our Art Rep brought laughter and creativity to campus

with a lively open mic event, challenging the wit and humor of all attendees.

Ball Report

Jaimie Mclntosh, Social Secretary

T

his academic year, the St Cross social secretaries

(Sam Thomas, Galina Boskh, and I) had the privilege

of running the annual St Cross end-of-year event. The

theme ‘Midsummer Soirée’ was inspired by Shakespeare’s

A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Summer Solstice,

which fell on the same weekend as the event (21st June

2024).

From the beginning of Hilary’s term, the social secretaries

worked hard to ensure the foundation of the Soirée

was in place and by midterm, we were in a comfortable

Jaimie Mclntosh, Social Secretary

position to sell tickets. After careful consideration, the

SRC decided to showcase the Soirée as a limited-ticket event designed around evening

drinks, food and live music before moving to the Varsity Club to dance the night away.

With the amazing help of a fellow St Cross student, Suzie Gilbert, we launched an online

giveaway and ticket countdown to help promote the Soirée. Through the clever use of AI

design, Suzie beautifully designed posts that showcased the Soriée theme, bringing a lot of

online attention to the event.

“When the SRC finally launched the tickets, the Soirée side of

the event sold out in under 5 minutes. The ‘after party Varsity

tickets’ had steady sales throughout Hilary, selling out in Week 9

of Trinity Term.”

On the morning of the Soirée, the Estates team worked hard to bring the social secretaries’

decorating vision to life. The hall was beautifully transformed with a draped entrance and

a ceiling canopy of wisteria and fairy lights. Trees within both college quads were artfully

decorated with pastel-coloured paper lanterns and stringed solar-powered fairy lights.

The showcase decoration was the large gold-leafed picture framed and hung between the

arches, creating a beautiful photo background for guests.

The evening started with a saxophone quartet called ‘P Anthony’s’ playing in the Blackwell

Quad, and delicious canapes were served. As evening light shifted, guests moved into the

West Wing Quad, where floor cushions and outdoor rugs had been laid. Once the finger

bowl food had been served, the second band ‘Sisters of Funk’ kicked off - a highlight of the

whole event.

A massive heartfelt thank you to the many who helped the social secretaries organise and

run such a successful event.

Sports Report

Professor James Taylor, Sports Fellow

T

hroughout the year, sport was a very strong feature of

college life. Great credit and thanks must go to Grace

Frost who did an outstanding job as the college’s Sports

and Societies Rep. Her contributions to college sport were

numerous, varying from organising a trial and test event

for our University Challenge team to the important tasks of

managing the sports budget, and ensuring a fair allocation

of sports subsidies. On the subject of finances, big thanks

must go to the College Accountant (and keen runner),

Rachel Walker, for her care and diligence in ensuring that

we didn’t spend money that we didn’t have, and we did

spend all the money that we had.

Professor James Taylor

“A high point of the year was the Sports Dinner, which was

organised so wonderfully well by Grace and her team.”

This annual dinner is fundamentally an opportunity to celebrate participation in sport at

any level. The long-held St Cross Sports Dinner traditions were observed, and among the

more sensible of these were the excellent speeches given by about a dozen members of

the college. These highlighted the wonderful diversity of sporting activities of our college

members. Indeed, the variety is evident by just looking at the sports of some of our elite

sporting women and men who represented the University in 2023-24: Emma Godden

– modern pentathlon; Jack Hamilton – rugby union; Alia Binti Mohamed Ibrahim –

cheerleading; Jaimie McIntosh – field hockey; James Moore – dance sport; Rhys Pearson-

Shaul – rugby union; Elliot Queisser de Stockalper – handball; and Andrew Tan – chess.

Many congratulations to them all.

Obituaries

Dr Jo Ashbourn, Senior Tutor

(Academic Affairs & Programmes)

Wendy James CBE FBA (1940 – 2024)

St Cross Emeritus Fellow Professor Wendy James passed

away peacefully on the 27th April 2024. Wendy was a

major figure in the School of Anthropology and Museum

Ethnography between 1972 and 2007. Her long and

distinguished career included the award of a CBE in 2011

and Presidency of the Royal Anthropological Institute

between 2001 and 2004. She was also Vice-President of

the British Institute in Eastern Africa (2001–2011).

Wendy originally read Geography at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, taking up anthropology

on graduation. Her election as a Fellow of St Cross in 1972 was combined with

appointment to a University Lecturership in Social Anthropology (later converted to a

titular Professorship). From then until her retirement in 2007, her main contribution

was to postgraduate teaching and doctoral supervision, alongside her role in promoting

and supporting the undergraduate degrees of Human Sciences and of Archaeology and

Anthropology since the foundation of these courses. The experience of teaching the

wide range of students taking these degrees broadened Wendy’s own interest in the

relevance of today’s anthropology to human history as a whole. She was honoured to

have the opportunity to assist in the editing of some of R.G. Collingwood’s unpublished

work and also to support the British Academy’s Centenary Project “From Lucy to

Language” through serving as an external member of its Management Committee (2003-

2010).

Before taking up her Lectureship at Oxford Wendy taught at the University of Khartoum

and at the University of Bergen and subsequently she was consulted by United Nations

bodies, NGOs working with refugees and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

during and after the Sudan’s civil war (1983–2005). Wendy actively supported and

taught Human Sciences throughout her teaching career at Oxford. In 2023 the School

welcomed the endowment of a new position, the Wendy James Associate Professorship

in Evolutionary Anthropology with a Tutorial Fellowship in Human Sciences at St Hugh’s

College.

Wendy is best known for her trilogy of ethnographic and historical works on the Uduk

of Sudan, ‘Kwanim Pa (1979), The Listening Ebony (1988) and War and Survival in

Sudan’s Frontierlands (2007). She wrote on Mauss, Durkheim, Collingwood and other

anthropological ancestors, and she also penned a notable overview of the discipline, The

Ceremonial Animal: A New Portrait of Anthropology (2003).

Dennis Britton (1932 – 2024)

St Cross Emeritus and Founding Fellow Dennis Britton

passed away peacefully at home on the 26th May 2024.

Dennis studied the Archaeology and Anthropology

Tripos at Pembroke College, Cambridge. After

graduating, he worked as an assistant to Christopher

Hawkes, Oxford’s inaugural Professor of European

Archaeology and was a member of The Queen’s College,

Oxford. He was appointed as University Demonstrator

and Lecturer in Ethnology and Archaeology at the

Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford in 1960. In this role he

combined his curatorial duties in the Museum with

teaching on the Diploma in Prehistoric Archaeology and

the Diploma in Ethnology.

Dennis had a longstanding interest in later prehistoric metalwork and published the

co-authored “Metallurgical Reports on British and Irish Bronze Age Implements and

Weapons in the Pitt Rivers Museum” in 1970, as well periodically publishing articles in

Archaeometry, Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society and Antiquity. He thus played a

role in the development of archaeology and the museums in Oxford, as well as in the

early history of the College.

Dennis was a very proud non-don Founding Fellow of St Cross, often discussing the

original St Cross hut. He frequently attended dinners when his health allowed and

enjoyed keeping up to date with all the latest news from the College. He retired in 1993

but continued to be an important part of the College community and a regular presence

at St Cross lunches long into his retirement.
