A re-enactments and a full programme of

events would encourage local residents to visit

Berkhamsted Castle more often, according

to the results of a public consultation held by

Berkhamsted Castle Trust in early summer.

The report on Reconnecting Berkhamsted

Castle, prepared for the Trust by Land Use

Consultants, suggests possible future improvements,

including better interpretation materials,

physical connections from the castle and

improvements to existing public rights of way.

There is also support for improving the arrival

experience from the town and train station.

Over half of respondents did not know about

Berkhamsted deer park or the historic and

cultural significance of the landscape, and

there was strong support for the idea of better

connecting the castle with the former deer park

to celebrate its rich historic and cultural heritage.

While 40% of respondents supported dedicated

parking for castle visitors, and 52% said they would

visit more often if there were public toilets, there

was also some support for events and volunteering.

When it comes to future

improvements of the

surrounding landscape,

respondents would like to see

dedicated walking routes,

signage and interpretation, as

well as improvements to

biodiversity, engagement with

schools, new areas of public

open space and artistic

installations. Specific

improvements suggested

include more information at

the castle site, better connections

to the surroundings, and

improved access for pedestrians.

Adrian Barham, chairman of the Berkhamsted

Castle Trust, added: ‘We have shared the full

report with English Heritage and Historic

England, and await a date for a meeting to

discuss this further with them. We have also

provided copies to Dacorum Borough Council,

who part-funded the report through the UK

Shared Prosperity Fund, and to Berkhamsted

Town Council, who we hope will take this

into account when developing the town’s new

Neighbourhood Plan.’

Get involved…

The Chiltern Society, which ‘gives a voice

to everyone who conserves, campaigns

for and promotes the Chilterns’, is looking

for volunteers.

Members of the public who would like to

be part of preserving this beautiful area, are

sought for the organisation’s planning group.

Cyclists celebrate club

anniversary

Berkhamsted Cycling Club (BCC), is

celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The club organises weekly group rides of

varying speeds, and its annual ‘reliability ride’

has raised more than £3,800 for local charities.

Two members, Michael Gower and Graham

Earl, broke the Guinness World Record for

fastest pedal-powered crossing of the English

Channel. And Anna Henderson, a silver medallist

at the Paris Olympics, was the winner in one of

her early competitions on a BCC hill climb.

Club chair Mary Holden said: ‘While we are

proud of our members who have achieved huge

feats and attained incredible levels of fitness

and speed on the bike, I’m just as proud of the

support and social environment we’ve provided

to members who are every bit as interested in

riding an easy loop while having a chat with

friends. The brilliant thing about cycling is

how there is something for almost everyone,

whatever your ability.’ berkocc.com

Young people getting creative at The Swan Youth Project

Kings Road Dental Practice has donated £1,100

from its recent Smile Open Day Weekend to

Berkhamsted charity, The Swan Youth Project.

Patients visited a dedicated ‘smile suite’ at the

Berkhamsted practice, to see simulations of their

dream smiles using advanced technology.

‘A big thank you to everyone who attended and

started their personal journey towards achieving

the perfect smile, while also helping to raise

money for this great local charity,’ said practice

partner, Dr Rishi Shah.

Swan Youth Club Project Manager, Parul Dix,

said: ‘Fundraising is tough right now, so we are

more reliant than ever before on partnerships

with local businesses. We are so grateful to

Kings Road Dental Practice and their patients

for their very generous support. It will help us

to continue to give our young people a safe, fun

Libraries bag funding for centenary celebrations

An Arts Council grant of nearly £100,000 will

go towards a year-long celebration of

Hertfordshire Libraries, which turns 100 on 28

February 2025.

The celebration will begin with the launch of

an exhibition of the library service showcasing

how it has developed over the past 100 years, and

starting in March, there are plans for a ‘festival

of creativity and reading’ to kick off across the

county’s libraries.

A council spokesperson told Berkhamsted

Living: ‘We are still going through feedback

from our survey on what people want to see

during our centenary year and of course

have our own celebration plans and ideas.

Berkhamsted library will certainly feature in our

plans, as will all our other libraries up and down

the county.

Homes planned for Chesham Road

H

dni omes builder Taylor Wimpey has

earmarked land at Chesham Road, South

Berkhamsted for a huge development of up to

850 homes.

Public consultation has already taken place on

the proposals, which will include 40% affordable

homes as well as homes reserved for the elderly.

The site, the developer says, will also feature

a local centre/community hub which could

include small scale retail, community, primary

health care (with potential for a GP and/or dental

surgery), and/or flexible co-working space.

It also has allocated land for a primary school

with a nursery, landscaping, open space and

outdoor sports provision, along with children’s

play areas, natural and semi-natural spaces, and

amenity space including parks and gardens,

and allotments.

A network of pedestrian and cycle routes

(on-site and off-site) are proposed to improve

connectivity to the town centre as well as to

the open countryside and SANG (Suitable

Alternative Natural Green Space) beyond the A41

to the south.

A new bus loop would serve the site itself

as well as the wider town (to include local

schools, employment sites, the town centre

and railway station).

Rotary impresses magazine publisher

Berkhamsted

Living publisher

Alison Page was

asked to speak at the

Berkhamsted Rotary

in October, and was so

impressed with their

friendship, fellowship,

commitment, and dedication that she just

wanted to pen a few words:

The Berkhamsted Rotary meet weekly in

addition to committee meetings, social events

and of course their fundraising activities.

They also support the community from kids

to seniors, and a raft of other charities, such as

the Open Door, Hospice of St Francis, Pepper

Foundation, and Swan Youth Project. Their local

and international reach and involvement is

quite breathtaking.

We’re probably all aware that the Rotary

organises Santa’s Sleigh (see page 8), the

fireworks evening, which took place on Saturday

2 November, and the half marathon, planned

for Sunday 2 March 2025, but did you know

it also works with local schools and youth

organisations to deliver a series of events to

help boost the confidence and skills of young

people? The Technology Tournament is key to

this, taking place in March each year, but other

activities include Young Chef, Dacorum Young

Artist and a Musical Instrument Library, to name

just a few.

So the next time you enjoy a Rotary event,

please give some thought – and huge respect

– to the men and women behind such an

undertaking. These things don’t come together

by chance.

If you would like to find out more about the

fellowship of the Berko Rotary, please contact

Peter Brown (greenwoodbrown@hotmail.com)

or of course visit the website: berkorotary.org

At the end of the presentation, one of

the members asked ‘What next for Living

Magazines?’ Perhaps I should have turned the

question around, what would you like to see next

from Berkhamsted Living Magazine? You can

let us know your thoughts at

info@livingmags.info

Please spare five

minutes for charity

As you will have read

in the press, many

charities are having a

tough time raising

sufficient funds to cover

rising costs, with regular

or significant donations

becoming less and less frequent. Every day we

are reading about charities forced to close due to

lack of funding.

To help our local charities better understand

what their local communities think of them and

the services they provide, they are reaching out

to you, our community, to ask only for the gift of

time, and only about five minutes of it. They

really need it and would greatly appreciate it.

A local research company, Message House, is

conducting a short survey to find out what

people like you think about the charities in your

area. By sharing your thoughts, you’ll help these

organisations better connect with their

community and improve the way they operate.

Can you please support them by giving a few

minutes of your time by taking the survey now,

either via the link below or by scanning the QR

code. It really will make a huge difference and

help sustain their future.

As a thank you, by completing the survey,

you’ll be entered into a draw to win one of

five £20 M&S vouchers!

Foundling Hospital

archive goes online

Almost

100,000

pages of

records from

the Foundling

Hospital,

England’s first

home for babies who were unable to be cared

for by their parents, have been made available

online for the first time. The Foundling Hospital

School moved from London to Berkhamsted

in 1935.

The digital archive, launched by the UK’s first

children’s charity Coram, which was established

as the Foundling Hospital in London in 1739,

brings to life the previously untold stories

of over 20,000 children who grew up at the

Hospital, and of their birth mothers.

Today’s digital archive launch is the

culmination of Coram’s five-year programme,

Voices Through Time: The Story of Care,

made possible by The National Lottery

Heritage Fund. Coram has digitised 405

volumes in the archive, almost a quarter of the

entire collection, spanning 1739 to 1899. Nearly

Berkhamsted’s

big screens

As the Rex cinema celebrates

its 25th anniversary, we look

back over more than 100

years of its predecessors

in the town

Berkhamsted has a long association with

the world of the big screen, thanks to

the location of the BFI (British Film

Institute) National Archive, and with our own

Rex cinema celebrating the 25th anniversary

of its reincarnation, it seems the perfect time

to take a look at the town’s cinematic links.

Before 1911, the townsfolk of Berkhamsted

had been treated to the occasional film

showing at the Town Hall, or the travelling

show that was Taylor’s Royal electric

Coliseum de Luxe.

The travelling show had, according to all

accounts, been ‘fitted up in the most elaborate

style that money and artistry study can produce’.

The town’s first permanent erection

designed for showing moving pictures

sounds as if it was not quite so grand! The

Gem Picture Palace was a corrugated iron hut

sitting between the Wesleyan Methodist

Church and the Sayers almshouses on Cowper

Road. Two houses now occupy the site.

A 10ft screen received images from a single,

rather noisy projector to an audience of up

to 168 people. Apparently, it was cursed with

breakdowns, and the manager was often

forced to return the ticket price when the

projector jammed. The valiant Kitty Wilkins

was the pianist who helped to drown out the

sound of the projector.

The Gem did undergo a bit of an upgrade,

but thanks to the introduction of the Picture

Playhouse its days were numbered. The

Picture Playhouse was launched in 1912 in

Prince Edward Street in the converted stables

at the King’s Arms Hotel - a cinema for 340

people in raked seating, watching a screen

measuring 12 by 9ft.

It upgraded the pianist to an additional

violinist as well as live acts on occasion,

but was a victim of its own success and the

Court was subsequently built in 1917, to house

a larger audience. The Picture Playhouse

eventually had an upgrade of its own as

the King’s Hall, until the 1980s. It was later

demolished and replaced with the existing

Fells House office block.

The Court was built on the site of an old

brewery in the High Street on the corner of

Water Lane. Named after the Inns of Court

Training Corps, which made its home in the

town in World War I, this was a far grander

affair - with Italian paintings on the walls and

seats for an audience of more than 700!

LOCAL

HISTORY

With the aim to entertain soldiers stationed

in the town, the regimental band played on

opening night and an all-female band was

hired to accompany the silent movies. One

wonders what the soldiers thought of the film

The Growth of Plants, which formed part of

the first-night’s programmes!

The Court was extended and transformed

once more in 1934, with space for 1,000

filmgoers, and the addition of a Christie organ.

However, the Court too was superceded by

the new Rex, and instead became a theatre,

hosting performances by the Berkhamsted

Amateur Operatic And Dramatic Society (now

Berkhamsted Theatre Company), and then the

Berkhamsted Repertory Company.

Probably thanks to the war, the Court

reverted back to showing films in 1940 -

although the Rex continued to show the ‘big’

titles. In 1960 it was sold and converted into

a Tesco store. The building was demolished

after a fire and the existing Tesco store built.

The Rex, designed in Art Deco style by the

architect David E Nye, opened in 1938,

with Heidi, starring Shirley Temple as its

first screening.

It was an impressive sight, with its double

height foyer, art deco pendant chandelier

and a round wood and glass ticket booth

with chrome trim - quite a step up from that

corrugated iron hut 27 years earlier!

It opened on Sundays from 1939 (the Court

never opened on Sundays), but by the 1970s it

had become too large for purpose, films were

4

shown four days a

week (when it was

called Studio 1) and

from Thursday to

5

Saturday it took on

a new persona as a

bingo hall.

In 1976 it was

renovated at a cost of £90,000, with the stalls

handed over for bingo and the circle divided

into two screens.

The lease expired in 1988, and the cinema

closed with final screenings of The Witches of

Eastwick and Teen Wolf Two, but not before

the Cinema Theatre Association made efforts

to get it listed by English Heritage as a Grade

II listed building.

Various attempts to demolish or develop

the Rex were made over the years - including

one proposal featuring a swimming pool in

the auditorium. Eventually, permission was

granted for what became the Rex Apartments

to be developed, while the foyer was leased to

a Fish! restaurant - now it’s The Gatsby.

And in 2002, James Hannaway leased the

auditorium, which opened in 2004 following

a huge renovation project and has become the

successful independent cinema we know today.

INTERVIEW

A GOOD

WOMAN

After six decades as a prominent

primatologist, Dr Jane Goodall

stands as one of our most

prominent campaigners for the

animal world and our natural

habitats, and even at 90, she’s

not done yet

The times have changed somewhat since

Jane Goodall’s childhood, spent around

the leafy loveliness of London’s

Hampstead. ‘From a young age, I harboured a

dream that many found unrealistic – I

envisioned myself growing up, travelling to

Africa, living among wild animals and

authoring books about them,’ she begins. ‘In

those times, it was rare for women to pursue

careers in science, so my ambitions were

often met with laughter.’

Two crucial allies in Goodall’s journey were

traditional mother Margaret, and

businessman father Mortimer, who both

encouraged her to explore the natural world.

In 1957, Goodall met Dr. Louis Leakey, a

prominent British paleoanthropologist and

archaeologist, and three years later the pair

started a ground-breaking study at Gombe

Stream National Park in Tanzania. There,

working with minimal resources, she quickly

established a research station and began her

observations of wild chimpanzees.

Over the decades since, her pioneering work

has revolutionised our understanding of

primate behaviour and human evolution,

often to the chagrin of some of her male

peers in the field. ‘It just wasn’t accepted

that a woman would be such a leader…

such a driving force behind research,’ she

explains. ‘I am so glad we are at a different

point of understanding and tolerance now,

where there is the same respect and

allowance for anyone of any background to

push forward with what inspires them.

‘Back then emotions would span derision

through to anger, but I kept on – I knew I had to.’

One of the ethologist’s most significant

discoveries was observing chimpanzees using

tools in the wild, as well as gaining deep

insight into the social structures in

chimpanzee communities, including

dominance hierarchies. ‘The more I learned,

the more I realised how like us they were;

and the more I came to see chimpanzees as

beings with their own personalities, minds,

and emotions.’

In the years since, the scientist’s conservation

efforts have expanded exponentially,

founding the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in

1977, which operates a variety of programs

focused on wildlife conservation, education,

habitat restoration, anti-poaching and

sustainability.

‘I look back over it all now and believe I was

placed on this planet with a specific purpose.

Now I’m searching for those who will take the

work on, and I must admit I am constantly in

awe of the enthusiasm and empowerment I

witness in the young people I meet.

‘Their energy in return provides in me a

reassurance that booms loud, and says “we

will be okay”… and that is incredible.’

Saturday

is a nationwide

campaign to support,

inspire and promote

the UK’s 5.8 million small businesses. The

aim is to encourage consumers to ‘shop

local’ and support small businesses in

their communities.

The day itself takes place on the first

Saturday in December each year, but the

campaign aims to have a lasting impact on

small businesses.

Now in its 12th year in the UK, the campaign

has grown significantly year on year

encouraging millions to shop small.

You’ll already be familiar with our ‘Shop

Local’ feature on page 16, which appears in

every issue and is free for local retailers to

participate, but in this feature we’d like to

remind you about supporting your local

services and B2B as well.

Whether you shop in person, online or use a

local tradesperson, make sure you leave them a

review and spread the word among your

friends and family, and share the campaign

using the hashtag #SmallBizSatUK

A Little Place in Prague - Julie Caplin

The perfect book to cuddle up with on a winter’s night, this romance is set in snowy

Prague, so gives all the Christmas feels!

When Leo Knight reappears in Anna Love’s life, as her new housemate in her new

attic home in the capital city of the Czech Republic, can the magic of the city - with its

cobbled streets, snow-frosted Weneslas Square and candlelit Charles Bridge work its

magic on the couple?

Tring based author Julie Caplin (who also writes as Jules Wake) has sold more than 2 million books

around the world.

Last Christmas - Clare Swatman

As Christmas approaches, Bea Preston has a choice. Her flight to New York is boarding

soon, she knows that getting on that plane changes everything. Her life in London has

grown stale, her relationship with boyfriend Dom has run its course, and New York has

always been her dream. What if Bea could live both lives? In one she goes back home for

Christmas, and in another she heads to the Big Apple. Would her fate remain the same,

or can one decision really change everything?

Successful author Clare lives in Berkhamsted with her husband and two boys.

The Daily News - there is nothing hidden that will not

be revealed - Alistair McIver

This political conspiracy thriller is a work of fiction, but based on true experiences of

the author, who witnessed corruption and abuse against women in Central Asia during

his overseas mission, working for Christian charity Interserve.

It’s a compelling read, but not necessarily an easy one, but while it focuses on

corruption it also tells of redemption and introduces the reader to a little known area of the world,

where ancient practices still affect the lives of many women.

Alistair lives in Berkhamsted with his wife Sally, and they have two daughters. He has been widely

published in both tennis and Christian publications over a career spanning three decades.

A Wolf-Cat Called Alpha - Pam G Howard

Two years ago exactly, we featured Pam’s book, A Dragon Called Shining Leaves. Here

she brings the second part of this children’s fantasy series, and it’s as charming and

thrilling as the first.

Danger is coming as the evil wizard Malvic is on the rise once more.

We meet Autumn again, who learns that a village has been attacked - and

accompanied by Alpha, the wolf-cat, and her friend Yulia, she sets off to help.

Meanwhile, we catch up again with Tan, Otto and Alton who are on a mission to search out some

magic that could defeat Malvic. But they can’t find Shining Leaves - is the dragon in danger, and can

they save him?

Full of adventure and magic, an imaginative read for young readers aged eight and over.

Pam lives in Little Gaddesden and loves ‘dragon hunting’ in Ashridge forest with her dog.

Co-parenting during the Christmas season can be a challenging

experience, yet with good communication, planning and focusing on

the children, it’s possible to make it work for everyone

Prioritise the children’s needs

Christmas should be a magical time for

children, regardless of their parents’

relationship status. Try to remove any

personal conflicts from the equation and

focus on what will make your children feel

loved and supported.

Plan early and be clear

Start discussions well in advance, allowing

plenty of time to negotiate and make

decisions that you’re both comfortable

with. Being clear and open about what

you both want can prevent last-minute

confusion and tension. Whether you’re

dividing the holiday or spending it

together, ensure everyone knows the plan

well in advance.

Be flexible and willing to compromise

While it’s natural to have strong feelings

about how you want Christmas to be, the

more flexible you make the season, the less

stressful for everyone involved.

Keep communication respectful

Finally, maintaining civil and clear

communication is vital. Avoid arguments or

confrontation in front of children and try

to keep the focus on what’s best for them. If

emotions run high, consider using neutral

language and, if necessary, take a moment to

calm down before discussing arrangements.

Create new traditions

It could be something as simple as

decorating the tree, baking festive treats or

opening gifts in a unique way. These will

also help children adjust and embrace the

idea of having two Christmas celebrations,

giving them something to look forward to.

NEW YEAR,

NEW

GARDEN

Want to be in the know with the gardening trends for 2025?

Look no further

Gardening is evolving to meet modern

needs and aesthetics. In 2025, expect

a fusion of sustainability, practicality

and creativity in garden design. Here are six

key trends to watch out for.

1. Sustainable gardening practices

With growing climate change concerns

and resource depletion, gardeners will

increasingly adopt eco-friendly practices

such as rainwater harvesting, composting

and using organic fertilisers. Wildlifefriendly

gardening, including planting

native species and creating habitats for

pollinators, will also be a priority.

2. Carnivorous plants

With unique appeal and practical benefits,

these fascinating varieties – think Venus

flytraps and pitcher plants – naturally

control insect populations, reducing the

need for chemical pesticides. Striking

appearance and unusual behaviour make

them captivating additions.

They can be made from a variety of

materials, such as stone, wood, or metal

and are perfect for framing views or

creating a sense of passage between

different garden areas. And they’re set to be

popular in 2025!

4. Resilient gardens

As weather patterns become more

unpredictable, resilience will be a key

theme in garden design with a focus on

creations that can withstand extreme

weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall,

strong winds and prolonged droughts.

This includes hardy, drought-tolerant

plants, improvements in soil health, the

incorporation of features like windbreaks,

and permeable surfaces to manage

water effectively.

3. Moon gates

Inspired by traditional Chinese architecture,

moon gates are elegant structures that add

a touch of mystique and tranquillity to

gardens, creating a sense of enclosure and

guiding visitors towards a focal point.

GARDENS

5. Edibles in hanging baskets

The trend of growing edibles in small

spaces will continue to flourish, with

hanging baskets playing a central role for

herbs, strawberries, tomatoes and other

compact crops.

Not only does this maximise space –

making it ideal for urban gardens and balconies

– it also means produce is easy to access.

BOOKS

Continued from page 31…

6. Minimalist garden design

Characterised by clean lines, uncluttered

spaces and a focus on quality over quantity,

minimalist gardens offer a calming retreat

from busy lives.

The trick is to emphasise a careful selection

of a few key plants, often with a focus on

evergreens and architectural forms.

Hard landscaping materials like stone,

gravel and concrete also play a significant

role, creating a serene, low-maintenance

environment.

As we approach 2025, these gardening

trends reflect a shift towards sustainability,

resilience and simplicity. By embracing

these ideas, gardeners can create beautiful,

functional spaces that are ready for

the future.

Little Spirit and the Windows of Gold, and Little

Spirit and the Shadow Soldier - A J Freer

We’ve met Little Spirit before on these pages - the Guatemalan refugee who loves

treasure hunting. All of his adventures are based in and around Berkhamsted, so

make the ideal prompt for getting out of the house at the weekend and exploring

some of the places mentioned in the books.

Book 3 in the series is the Windows of Gold. When Little Spirit and his friend, Eliza, visit

Ashridge House and learn the story of the Abbot’s Gold, they’re desperate to see the stainedglass

windows that are said to hold clues to find it. But the tale is dismissed as just that - a

tale - but when Little Spirit finds a mysterious clue, the pair decide to investigate. A fabulous

adventure set within Queen Elizabeth I’s childhood home.

Book 4 is the Shadow Soldier. Based around the WWI trenches on Berkhamsted Common;

when the two friends are shown a WWI medal that’s going to be melted down for scrap, they

set out to trace its own and their family. But they are being followed by some strange shadows -

and the medal risks falling into the wrong hands…

Suspense and excitement make them ideal reading for ages 7-12.

A J Freer lives in Berkhamsted. The children’s author was a big fan of Enid Blyton’s mysteries

when she was a child.

Why our love of wallpaper is

perennial, and what’s to come

in 2025

As we move into a new year, wallpaper

is no longer simply a decorative

feature from the past but a bold

statement of personal style and creativity in

home interiors.

Once regarded as old-fashioned, wallpaper has

made a dramatic comeback and is evolving,

offering a myriad of exciting options for

homeowners and interior designers alike.

From maximalist patterns to muted hues,

wallpaper has become a canvas to express

individuality in the home.

Styles in 2025

Designs range from classic to contemporary,

allowing every space to feel unique. Botanical

prints are still a firm favourite, with oversized

leaves, tropical blooms and delicate floral

motifs bringing the outdoors in, providing a

lush, natural feel that works brilliantly in

living rooms, bedrooms or even kitchens.

Geometric patterns are continuing to rise in

popularity, offering a more modern touch. The

use of sharp lines, bold shapes and threedimensional

effects adds depth and movement,

making walls appear almost sculptural.

Perfect for feature partitions or entire rooms,

these arrangements can transform minimalist

spaces into something far more striking.

WHERE THERE’S A Meanwhile, vintageinspired

designs are

WALL

making a resurgence,

giving homes a

nostalgic yet elegant

THERE’S A WAY feel. From intricate

damask patterns to art

deco influences, these

styles offer a refined sense of

luxury, making them ideal for period homes,

or for amateur designers looking to add a

touch of timeless elegance to their interior.

Colour trends

When it comes to colours, the palette of 2025

is embracing both ends of the spectrum. Rich,

deep tones such as emerald green, navy blue

and burgundy are making waves, offering a

sense of warmth and opulence to interiors.

These shades work beautifully in larger

rooms, where they can be paired with velvet

furnishings and gold accents to create a cosy,

luxurious atmosphere.

At the same time, pastel shades continue to

have their place, providing a soft and calming

effect. Blush pinks, sage greens and muted

blues are perfect for creating a serene

environment, particularly in bedrooms or

home offices where tranquillity is essential.

Textured wallpaper is also gaining traction,

with materials such as silk, linen and

grasscloth adding dimension and a tactile

quality to walls. These options allow for a

subtler approach to wallpaper, ideal for those

who want an understated yet elegant look.

A bold future for walls

In 2025, wallpaper is more than just a

backdrop - it’s a key design feature in the

home. Whether you’re opting for bold

patterns or subtle textures, wallpaper offers

endless possibilities for creativity. With new

designs, materials and colours to explore, it’s

clear that where there’s a wall, there’s always a

way to make a statement.

It is promoted as a time of togetherness, but

for many, Christmas can be an isolating and

melancholy period. Beating those festive

blues isn’t easy, but these techniques can

help raise your spirits

Stay in touch

If you’re forced to be physically alone

this Christmas Day, you can still connect

with others (even if it’s via video calls or

social media).

A short video of a beloved grandson opening

the present you sent, a visit to a neighbour, or

a quick drink at the nearest pub will help you

ease your loneliness.

In fact, you might be surprised how simply

sharing in the cheer of others can bring a

smile to your own face.

Help others

Volunteering is a fantastic way to feel useful

and use your time in a positive way. Serving

dinner at a homeless shelter, collecting money

for a charity, or even making crafts to sell at

your local church fete will foster a sense of

purpose and remind you that there are many

others who also struggle this time of year.

Be thankful

It’s easy to become wrapped up in our own

problems, especially if we have a lot of time

alone to think. This is why it can help to focus

on all the wonderful experiences and gifts you

have received in your life.

LONELY

THIS CHRISTMAS

Keeping a gratitude journal, or even

just contemplate one thing

each day you are thankful

for, no matter how small,

can help shift your

perspective.

Reach out

The wonderful thing about

the holiday season is that

there are so many events and

opportunities to meet others. You

could join the local choir or theatrical group,

or even just watch a carol concert, nativity or

pantomime that’s playing in your area.

Even attending Midnight Mass or a

Christmas Day service can help remind us

what Christmas is truly about, and there is no

better way of experiencing that than in the

embracing arms of your community.

Accept your feelings

Putting on a charade of happiness for others

can be exhausting and, in these moments, it is

best to just accept how you feel.

Everyone has experienced conflicting

emotions during the festive period – it is a

milestone in the year we use as a point to

reflect and contemplate, so remember the

darker moments aren’t just your own.

So be kind to yourself, eat your favourite food

and watch whatever TV you want - a luxury

many will wish they had when they’re forced

to watch an entire afternoon of Only Fools

and Horses reruns!
