PRINCIPALS IN the district are 

cautiously optimistic they will 

soon have answers to roll growth 

pains. 

Education Minister Erica Stanford 

is looking at developing a 

Selwyn-specific growth model to 

map where school expansions and 

new schools will be needed. 

Principals say if the work comes 

to fruition, it will mark a change 

in the Ministry of Education’s 

approach to Selwyn’s explosive 

growth from reactive to proactive. 

In her visit last week Stanford 

met with all the district’s principals, 

and went to schools in 

Lincoln and Rolleston. 

The visit came after consistent 

calls from primary and secondary 

schools for better planning for 

growth.

Chris Nord said pupils at his 

school have staggered lunchtimes 

due to space constraints. He was 

pleased to see Stanford witness 

the problem firsthand.

Under-attended classes axed 


FITNESS CLASSES have been cut at 

the Lincoln Event Centre. 

Of the 22 classes on offer, only 

eight will remain at the event centre, 

with nine being moved to Rolleston 

and the remainder being cut 

completely. 

It follows a proposal by council to 

cut under-attended classes which 

were being subsidised by rates.

recreation James Richmond spoke 

with staff and considered feedback 

from some fitness class members and 

the wider Lincoln community when 

making the decision.

BOTTLE STORES could be open 

for an extra hour under proposed 

alcohol rules. 

The proposal is part of the 

council’s review of its local alcohol 

policy, and is contrary to changes 

being made by other councils. 

Currently, off-licence premises 

have to stop selling alcohol 

at 9pm. Under the proposed 

changes, alcohol sales would be 

allowed until 10pm. 

It comes as off-licences in 

Auckland will have their hours 

cut from 10pm to 9pm next week, 

while Christchurch City Council 

is also considering a similar move. 

The extra hour of sales was 

welcomed by bottle store owners 

spoken to by Selwyn Times. 

Lincoln Super Liquor owner 

Gulshan Gulati said the current 

hours were “annoying”. 

“10pm will be good because 

sometimes people are coming in 

late looking for a bottle store.” 

Gulati was currently finding 

people were getting their alcohol 

from Christchurch due to the 9pm 

closing time in Selwyn. 

In a survey conducted by the 

council, 62.4 per cent of the 364 

respondents supported the move. 

The council has also proposed 

that the district licensing committee 

have discretion on whether 

individual premises can display 

external alcohol advertising. 

“Most people check for sales 

online anyway, so the signage 

rules would not matter to us,” 

Gulati said.

LATE WARD CHANGE 

The Rolleston Residents 

Association has appealed the 

council’s new ward structure. 

The appeal was lodged after 

the council decided to add an 

extra councillor to Rolleston, 

retaining two in Malvern and 

Ellesmere. The last-minute 

change during deliberations in 

November means homes in the 

west of Rolleston past Dunns 

Crossing Rd would remain in 

the Ellesmere Ward. The Local 

Government Commission will 

consider the association’s appeal 

and make a determination by 

April 10. 

MAN CHARGED OVER 

ALLEGED MAIL THEFT 

A 29-year-old man has been 

arrested after a spate of thefts 

from rural mailboxes in Selwyn 

and Waimakariri. Senior Sergeant 

Stephen McDaniel said police 

had been investigating reports 

of several parcels and other 

mail going missing. He said 

the community’s help had been 

crucial in solving the case with 

residents in Waimakariri even 

setting up a camera to watch some 

of the targeted mailboxes. The 

man appeared in Christchurch 

District Court on Friday on 

charges of theft, damage to 

property, unlawfully possessing 

a firearm and ammunition, and 

possessing an offensive weapon.

Heritage in Action, on Monday 16 December

share their knowledge and practical skills for writing

The day will start with a welcome from our Selwyn 

District Council Heritage team, there will then 

be a talk from Erna Tidy, Associate Registrar at 

Canterbury Museum, about practical and sustainable 

pest management, followed by a morning tea 

and networking. 

Where and when should 

alcohol be sold? 

We are reviewing our policy around the sale and 

supply of alcohol in Waikirikiri Selwyn. 

Councils are required to do this regularly to ensure 

the policies are right for our district. Our current 

policy was adopted in April 2017 and is due for 

a review. 

In August we asked for your feedback around 

opening times for places that sell alcohol, training 

requirements and whether you would like to see 

any limits around where places that sell alcohol 

can be located, or on the number of places that 

sell alcohol in a town or township area. 

Based on your feedback we have put together 

a draft policy. We want to hear from you on 

proposed changes to restrict bottle stores from 

opening near educational, health, spiritual, marae 

and recreational facilities, training for bar staff 

and manager rules for club licences.

Levi Road roadworks 

during December 

The roading team will be starting work 

on the Levi Road and Lincoln Rolleston 

Road intersection with temporary 30 km/h 

restrictions heading towards Rolleston. 

Two-way traffic will be maintained. This is to 

prepare to install traffic lights and upgrade the 

intersection to make it safer and handle the 

traffic as this is an arterial route in and out of

Politics, parenthood and the 

By her own admission, 

Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg 

has had a “busy” first 

year in Government, 

mixing electoral 

commitments with 

ministerial duties and 

raising her first child.

SECOND TERM MP Nicola 

Grigg and partner Phil 

welcomed baby boy Geordie, 

their first child, nearly a year ago 

and have been perfecting the 

balance since then. 

“I’m learning to manage the 

juggle as much as I humanly 

can,” Grigg said. 

Despite the workload, being 

a mother has been an “absolute 

delight”. 

Along with her local duties, 

Grigg is the Minister of State 

for Trade, Minister for Women, 

and Associate Minister of 

Agriculture. 

After Geordie was born, Grigg 

took 10 weeks off from her constituent 

work, staying at home 

in Prebbleton. But after Prime 

Minster Christopher Luxon 

intervened, she took her whole 

parental leave allocation. 

“The Prime Minster wanted 

me to take the full 26 weeks. I 

was only going to take a couple

of months off, but he rang and 

said ‘no, this is a really important 

time and I want you to take the 

full leave allocation’.” 

Since returning to full-time 

duties in June, Grigg said she has 

relied on her support network to 

balance work and life as a mum. 

“We are really well supported. 

We have a fantastic person who 

takes care of Geordie. Sometimes 

she travels with us to Wellington, 

sometimes his dad comes up to 

Wellington and other times I 

leave him at home with his dad.” 

She said the hardest times are 

when she is travelling without 

her son. 

“They’re the hardest because 

you don’t get to tuck him into 

bed at night, but you just manage 

it and babies are adaptable.” 

OUT AND ABOUT: When not in Wellington, Nicola Grigg 

spends time meeting constituents around the electorate. 

Grigg, who was pregnant while 

campaigning last year, said she 

was nervous about making the 

announcement. 

“If I’m really honest, I was 

probably a bit nervous about 

making it public because it was 

my first baby, and you never 

quite know how it’s going to land 

with the public. 

“I was pleasantly surprised 

with the enormous groundswell 

of support I was given and probably 

should have given people 

the benefit of the doubt.” 

In a unique coincidence, the 

last National MP to have a baby 

while in Government was Ruth 

Richardson in 1983. She was also 

the MP for Selwyn. 

Grigg said being a mum has 

added another string to her bow. 

“Obviously until I became a 

mum I didn’t understand the 

maternal health sector as well 

as I do now. I didn’t understand 

early childhood care, I didn’t 

understand Plunket. All those 

things I now have an intimate 

knowledge of. 

Geordie is starting to making 

his voice heard. 

“He’s certainly far more popular 

than I am when we walk into 

a room. 

“He’s just about one year 

old now and he’s developing a 

very loud voice and very strong 

opinions,” Grigg joked. 

With those strong opinions, 

is there a future in politics for 

Geordie?

She is following in the footsteps 

of her great-grandmother Mary 

Grigg – National’s first female 

MP who was elected to the Mid 

Canterbury seat held by her 

husband, Arthur, after he was 

killed in Libya in 1941 during 

World War 2. 

She is also the great, great, great

granddaughter of Sir John Hall, 

once the premier of New Zealand, 

and MP for Selwyn. 

Grigg entered Parliament in 

2020, taking over from Amy 

Adams in what some say is the 

safest blue seat in the country. She 

was re-elected in 2023, receiving 

31,504 votes, the most of any MP 

in last year’s election. 

She plans to run again in 2026 

but does not consider Selwyn a 

safe seat. 

“It is an enormous privilege to 

win this seat but you have to earn 

it. You don’t just win it because 

people traditionally vote blue. We 

saw that in 2020 when it actually 

swung left and Rolleston went 60 

per cent Labour. Then I swung it 

back in 2023.” 

When Parliament is in session, 

a typical week for Grigg involves 

travelling to Wellington on 

Tuesday morning and staying 

until Thursday. 

Mondays and Fridays are 

spent either meeting people at 

her Rolleston office or heading 

out and about in the district, and 

that’s before any travel for her 

ministerial duties. 

Nearly two weeks ago, Grigg 

lost one of her best friends – 

former National MP Nikki Kaye, 

who passed away after her second 

battle with cancer. 

Kaye was 44, the same age as 

Grigg. 

LOCAL FOCUS: Since June, Nicola Grigg has brought six Government minsters to Selwyn 

to show them the growth in the district and where it is projected to grow further. 

“I knew her very well. We 

were friends outside of politics 

before I became a politician. She 

was a great mate, a great New 

Zealander. 

“I had known her cancer had 

come back this year, but I was 

just shocked, like everyone, 

shocked at how fast it took her 

and I will miss her a lot.” 

Grigg said Kaye had taught her 

a lot about campaigning. 

“She was world famous for her 

fearsome campaign strategy. 

“I recall a lot of conversations 

about grassroots campaigning 

and knocking on doors. She 

knocked on thousands of 

doors and now I’ve knocked on 

thousands of doors.” 

Now in Government, Grigg 

believes an important part of her 

role is to bring as many ministers 

as she can to Selwyn to show 

them how fast the district is 

growing.

Growth in the district may 

also see Grigg’s geographical 

electorate shrink as its current 

population is outside the 

requirements set by the Electoral 

Commission. 

Selwyn currently falls well 

outside the 5 per cent variance allowed 

within South Island quota 

(70,037) for allowed population 

in electorates. 

The district is currently 14 per 

cent outside the quota and by the 

2026 election is predicted to have 

a 21.3 per cent variance with a 

predicted population of 88,700 by 

2026.

A SURVEY has confirmed people 

want more trees in the district. 

The council, as part of rewriting 

its tree policy, conducted a survey 

asking people their thoughts 

on tree planting, removal, and 

retention. 

The survey had 141 

responses with 94 per cent 

wanting more trees. 

Said council senior 

strategy planner George 

Sariak: “There was a lot of 

support for more planting 

and canopy cover. There 

was a recognition that 

there was a general need 

for more trees across the 

district.” 

He said along with more trees, 

people wanted to see more native 

birds in the district, particularly in 

the towns. 

The survey came after the 

council realised its current tree 

policy may not have been robust 

enough to support the retention 

of trees, and the replacing of trees 

after they had been removed. 

“We’ve heard quite strongly 

from the community that they 

feel the tree loss is happening in 

the land development process of 

greenfield subdivisions and they 

want something done about that,” 

Sariak said.

be done to incorporate 

trees in new subdivisions. 

“In my experience, there 

is a strong reluctance from 

council to retain existing 

mature trees within new

Sariak said the council will now

be returned to the council table in 

early next year.

Resident’s frustration grows 

over Levi Rd congestion woes 



ALL LEVI RD resident Beth Roche wants 

to do is get in and out of her driveway safely. 

But the Rolleston mum regularly gets 

honked at, tailgated and nearly hit while 

trying to enter and exit her driveway on a 

road which is becoming one of the main 

commuter routes in and out of town. 

“A least once a day either (my husband) 

Steve or I will get abused,” Roche said. 

Depending on the time of day, it can take 

up to 10 minutes for Roche to get out of her 

driveway. She said her elderly neighbour 

only leaves at off-peak times due to the 

traffic. 

In September, the council widened the 

road from 6.7m to 11.2m to bring it up to 

arterial road standard, but Roche says there 

is still no space to pull off and get into her 

driveway or to merge when exiting. 

On Monday, work started to install traffic 

lights which will replace the roundabout at 

Levi Rd, Lincoln Rolleston Rd, Lowes Rd, 

and Masefield Dr. 

Roche said she was looking forward to the 

roadworks as it would mean fewer people 

coming down the road. 

Council head of capital works Kamal 

Narang said once the lights are installed, it 

should solve the issue. 

“The traffic lights will create regular gaps 

in the traffic flow to allow residents to move 

in and out of their driveway safely.” 

But Roche was not convinced it would 

make a difference, with an exit for the Pak’n

Roche believes Levi Rd should have been 

designed the same as nearby Lowes Rd, 

which has a parking area on both sides of 

the road. 

Narang would not say why the Lowes Rd 

design was not used for Levi Rd, but said 

it had been designed to operate safely and 

efficiently.

Parking penalties and who is responsible 

I HAVE BEEN in a battle with 

the Selwyn District Council 

over payment of a $40, now $70, 

parking fine on my own property. 

On a Sunday morning, my expartner 

arrived to help me get my 

car going. I live in a narrow street 

and he parked on my lawn and 

street (pictured above). We were 

inside with the door open (zero 

excuse not to let us know what the 

parking warden was doing). 

I came out and there it was on 

the windscreen. She could have 

knocked as she could see us, and 

warned us this was an offence. 

I queried it by going to council. 

They were disinterested and said I 

had to pay it. 

They took it to court which 

added another $30. Surely it is 

sensible to give cars max room 

on the street to get through. It is 

definitely revenue collecting and 

the worst council I have ever had 

misfortune of paying rates to.

Mike needs to learn his road 

code (Selwyn Times, November 

27). The New Zealand Road Code 

prohibits parking on the righthand 

side of the road, except on 

one-way streets, to ensure safety 

and traffic efficiency. 

Parking on the right requires 

crossing oncoming traffic, 

increasing accident risks and 

reducing visibility for drivers and 

pedestrians. Allowing parking 

only on the left ensures uniformity, 

smoother traffic flow, and 

prevents any confusion. 

Vehicles facing the wrong way 

can misdirect headlights, creating 

hazards at night. However, not in 

this case. 

On one-way streets, where 

traffic all moves in the same 

direction, these risks are minimal, 

making parking on either side 

safer. This rule aligns with 

New Zealand’s left-side driving 

convention. 

Pay your infringement notice, 

you’re a risk to other drivers when 

you park the wrong way.

Fitness classes 

The closure of most of the 

Selwyn District Council group 

fitness classes at the Lincoln 

Event Centre seems incredibly 

short-sighted given the projected 

population growth for Lincoln 

over the next few years. 

Yes, not all classes are full yet 

but rolls are definitely growing. 

Group fitness classes are 

one of the biggest users of the 

Lincoln Event Centre and these 

classes are a great way to get to 

know people in our community 

and have real benefits for our 

community’s health and wellbeing.

In Selwyn, the turnout of voters 

in local body elections is pitifully 

small. When it’s time to make 

a submission, the number who 

submit is small. 

When SDC makes a decision 

that isn’t liked, the noise can be 

large. I am not an apologist for a 

council that has made some odd 

priorities and decisions in the 

last two or more terms, but I will 

make some observations. 

When people vote for governments 

and councils based on 

‘keeping my rates low’ and 

‘keeping my taxes low’ they get a 

resultant deterioration in services 

provided and quality of infrastructure. 

It is usually followed by 

increases in crime. 

For 30-40 years, this mindset 

has beset local and central government 

and the birds are now 

roosting. 

Voting against Three Waters 

put the entirety of water infrastructure 

cost back on councils 

and ratepayers. New Zealand is 

a young country so most of our 

towns and cities were created at 

the same time. Their infrastructure 

is failing at the same time. 

This ought not to be news to anyone 

and was entirely predictable. 

The people of Lincoln watch in 

horror as groaning infrastructure 

and services are beset by even 

more subdivisions. 

Our collective decision to 

choose lower rates and taxes over 

keeping our services/infrastructure 

fit for purpose has backfired. 

As for libraries, just as it 

behooves the younger generation 

to show some respect for the 

experiences and knowledge of 

the older generation, so too 

do the older generation need to 

understand that with technology 

changes, libraries have changed 

and so have the needs of those 

who follow behind us. 

They double and triple as 

learning centres, meeting places 

and yes, also book reading and 

borrowing. 

We need to stop thinking 

ideologically and start thinking 

as a community where more 

than the loudest, wealthiest 

voices hold sway.

Wrathall chasing short-course success

FORMER LINCOLN High 

School student Hugo Wrathall 

is set for the biggest competition 

of his swimming career when he 

races at the world short-course 

championships in Hungary 

starting on Tuesday. 

Wrathall will compete in the 

100m freestyle at the event. 

The 19-year-old will be racing 

alongside some of the biggest 

names in swimming – including 

China’s Pan Zhanle, the 

reigning Olympic 100m freestyle 

champion. 

Wrathall is not 

going in with any 

expectations. 

“Anything I get 

will be a bonus – 

from having good 

experience and 

being exposed to 

the top level for 

the first time,” he 

said.

Wrathall trains with the Jasi 

swim team at Jellie Park in 

Christchurch, and his coach 

Peter Burgon said he was always 

tipped to go far. 

“I’ve known Hugo since he was 

a very young lad, coming to Jasi 

nearly 10 years ago,” he said. 

“Watching him coming up 

through the squads, working 

with the various coaches, seeing 

how he has flourished, he’s done 

extremely well.” 

The short-course championships 

are held in a 25m pool, as 

opposed to the Olympic standard 

50m. 

There are a couple of 

differences between short- and 

long-course racing, the main one 

being the turns – three in a shortcourse 

100m race compared to 

just one in a long-course race. 

Wrathall said it might be tricky 

for his opponents who are more 

accustomed to a 50m pool. 

“It can be (challenging), 

especially if you don’t have good 

turns. 

“It goes sort-of faster than longcourse 

because of those turns. 

You’re faster under the water 

than you are on top of it.” 

Burgon said he was certain 

Wrathall could go far, with

“How long’s a piece of string? 

With any athlete, it’s what 

they want to do, they can push 

themselves to go as far as they 

want to go,” he said. 

“Obviously you have to 

compete against the rest of the 

world at the very top level, but 

it comes down to hard work, 

and that’s not something he is 

scared of. 

“He works damn hard, and 

he’s got the desire and the 

ambition to keep going, so the 

world’s his oyster.”

Weedons wary of Sefton strength

WEEDONS WILL head into 

their top-of-the-table clash with 

Sefton on Saturday with their 

form back on track thanks to a 

scratchy win over Cheviot. 

Sefton are unbeaten this season 

and top the points table, and 

Weedons captain Liam Robinson 

is under no illusion about the 

threat they pose. 

“They’ve been pretty impressive 

by the looks of it, scoring a lot 

of runs batting first most of the 

time. A lot of scores over 200, so 

it should be a challenge for our 

bowling lineup and in the field,” 

he said. 

“They’ve got a pretty strong 

batting lineup, top six or seven, 

so their batting’s probably their 

strength.” 

Chasing 106 against Cheviot 

on Saturday, Weedons lost their 

first two wickets with just four 

runs on the board, before a knock 

of 47 from Englishman Harry 

Passenger – emulating his countrymen 

flaying the Black Caps

SELWYN TOUCH TEAMS 

OFF TO NATIONAL CHAMPS 

Rolleston College and Lincoln 

High School will take to the 

national stage at the New Zealand 

secondary schools touch rugby 

championship in Rotorua this 

weekend. Rolleston has history in 

the mixed competition – winning 

the title in 2022 and finishing 

third last year while Lincoln were 

runners up in 2018 and third the 

following year. The teams met 

in the Canterbury secondary 

schools competition last weekend 

with Lincoln pipping Rolleston 

7-6 in the 3rd/4th place playoff. 

The event runs from Friday until 

Sunday. 

ABRAHAM JOINS LINCOLN 

COACHING CONTINGENT 

Former Canterbury and New 

Zealand Māori front-rower John 

Abraham will be part of Lincoln’s 

division 1 coaching line-up next 

season. Abraham will join as an 

assistant taking charge of set pieces 

under head coach Tim Nuthall and 

alongside Jason Pietzner and Ant 

Sharp. He replaces Matt Lowe who 

departed due to family and work 

commitments. Abraham played for 

NZ Māori in 1992 and Canterbury 

in 1994, around stints at the 

Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Woodend 

clubs. Lincoln finished 14th in the 

combined country competition last 

season, losing to West Melton in 

the 13th/14th playoff, and finished 

bottom of the Coleman Shield 

standings. 

Strong field ready for battle 

in War of the Wings opener

RUAPUNA WILL host the 

opening round of the Hydraulink 

War of the Wings sprintcar series 

on Saturday. 

Ellesmere Motor Racing Club 

president Stuart Dreaver said a 

line-up of 16 cars was expected for 

the event. 

“The opening round always has 

a high level of expectation, and we 

are rapt that American Joel Myers 

Jr is returning,” he said. 

“He is fresh off a successful USA 

campaign and he knows what to 

expect here. Joel won the last War 

of the Wings race at Ellesmere, 

and we really are fortunate he 

chooses to come to New Zealand 

to spend his off season here.” 

Auckland’s Max Guilford also 

raced in the United States during 

the northern summer where he 

was in top form. Guilford and 

Myers race for the Te Anau-based 

Daniel Anderson Motorsport 

team, and the combination looks 

formidable. 

Tony Uhlenberg from New 

Plymouth is also trekking 

south having enjoyed his trip to 

Ellesmere last summer.

“Dave’s team are still waiting 

on the return of his engine, but 

if there’s a remote chance, they’ll 

give it everything,” said Dreaver. 

Time trials will be held at 11am 

before the scheduled 1pm start. 

Dreaver said there would be an 

opportunity for people parked 

around the track to meet the 

drivers in the pits before the start.

Lincoln Christmas Parade & Market: 

Join us in celebrating the festive spirit at 

the annual Lincoln Christmas Parade and 

Market! This event is a much anticipated 

highlight of local community life in 

Lincoln and beyond, and promises to be a 

fun family experience for all ages. 

The Market gets going early and will be 

in full swing by 9am, stretching from The 

Famous Grouse to The Laboratory. The 

street will be closed from 8am for set up. 

There will be plenty of space to explore 

the craft stalls and the many food options 

for snacks and drinks until the Parade 

clears the street at 10.30am. 

Come and buy some Christmas presents, 

plants for the garden, treats for Christmas 

day and support the stalls that make this 

day possible. Many of our local clubs 

have stalls to promote their club and as 

a fundraiser. The Lincoln Rotary Club 

will have their famous Hams Wheel and 

Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade will be 

running a raffle, as well as having the fire 

engine open for the kids – big and small! 

– to have a look around. Lincoln Farmers 

and Craft Market will be the biggest of 

the year, in its normal location next to 

the Lincoln Library, spilling out onto the 

Green behind. 

To join the Parade, enter a float. There’s 

great prizes again this year: 1st $500, 2nd 

$200, 3rd $100. 

Please get a group together for your 

float and use your imagination. Show 

your passion, fun, culture, and make it 

Christmassy. Check out last year’s Parade

It’s official: the many benefits 

of community gardens

Cantabrians who participate in community 

gardens were recently surveyed in a Massey 

University research project, in conjunction 

with the Canterbury Community Gardens 

Association, to explore how and why 

participants take part, and what they value 

about the experience. 

The survey had 56 respondents from over 50 

community gardens across Canterbury. Asked 

their main reasons for becoming involved, 

the overwhelming answer was “strengthening 

community”, 59%, followed by “growing and 

harvesting produce”, 44.5%. “Food security” 

and “mental health/wellbeing” came joint 

third, at around 27% [respondents selected 

more than one answer, and percentages have 

been rounded for this article]. 

Similarly, the main response to “Since joining 

the community garden I feel…” was “more 

connected to the community”. Second equal 

came “more skilled at gardening” and “a greater 

sense of meaning/purpose”. A third reported 

each of eating more fruit and vegetables, feeling 

happier, becoming more environmentally 

aware, and more connected to nature. Around 

a quarter felt more self-sufficient and useful. 

These findings reflect what is happening at 

the ReNourish Community Garden in Pines 

Resource Recovery Park, near Rolleston. 

Coordinator Nicky O’Sullivan says: “ReNourish 

is a place to empower and educate people 

about growing food in a sustainable way. Our 

volunteers love that it’s a place of connection 

where knowledge is shared. What’s more, they 

can take produce home while feeling satisfied 

that the rest is donated to the Rolleston 

Salvation Army Foodbank.” 

The Massey researchers, Julia Zanker and 

Judith Ireland, are both postgraduates studying 

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) 

principles and applications in Urban Planning 

and Environmental Management contexts. 

Julia says: “Our project was focused on the 

benefits of community gardens to communities 

in terms of food security, but also in building 

social capital and disaster resilience, because 

community initiatives that facilitate skillsharing 

and bonding across diverse social 

groups have been proposed as a practical, 

grassroots way of improving a community’s 

ability to withstand, adapt and efficiently 

recover from natural hazard events.” 

Their findings were shared with the 

Canterbury Community Gardens Association 

in September and with landscape design 

researchers in Lincoln who are working on an 

emergent project on food value systems.

Burn piles in summer 

Hello December, the calendar says 

it’s summer. If you’ve got an outdoor 

burn pile stacked ready to go, you’ll be 

needing to keep a close eye on the fire 

season status. Check your current fire 

permission, in one minute, from Fire and 

Emergency NZ’s (FENZ) three-step tool at 

checkitsalright.nz. 

Start by clicking on the yellow button 

“Can I light a fire?”. The first step is 

“What”. Under “Land clearing fires”, click 

on “Burn piles”. Next, click the yellow 

“Where” and type the address of the burn. 

Then click “When”, and choose from today 

to four days ahead. 

Last yellow button, “Next step”, gives 

you the yea or nay, with detailed results. It 

lists the fire danger rating, the fire season 

status for your location, and a detailed 

weather forecast, all for your chosen day. 

There’s also the key instruction to check 

back again on the day. 

Other guidelines include: 

• Even if you live rurally, you can only 

burn outdoors if your property is over 

two hectares. You can then burn dry 

waste material from your property and a 

neighbour’s, but smoke must not cause a 

nuisance beyond your boundary. See the 

list of rubbish materials that cannot be 

burned (Environment Canterbury/ECan) 

• Use a sheltered spot 10–30 metres 

downwind from hedges, buildings, etc. 

Fires must be lit in daytime and should be 

out by dark (Selwyn District Council) 

• Burnt piles can hold heat for months 

and strong winds can re-ignite flame, so 

keep checking the site for weeks (FENZ)

Vegetables 

Peas can still be sown and 

dwarf varieties, such as Novella, 

will produce plump pods in 9-11 

weeks from sowing. Greenfeast 

takes 11-13 weeks. 

Peas do best in trenches filled 

with rich soil and compost topped 

with ordinary soil. Add 50g of 

superphosphate for every metre 

of the row and keep the top of 

the filled-in trench a little below 

ground level. This will help keep 

the peas’ roots moist longer after 

watering if conditions become dry 

later in the season. 

If the trench method is not 

used, good garden peas can be 

grown in any rich, moist soil. 

Like peas, celery and leeks can 

be planted in heavily fertilised 

trenches topped with soil. 

Brussels sprouts plants put in 

now will give an early crop for 

picking in late autumn. Another 

planting at New Year will mature 

over the winter and through to 

early spring.

Eschscholzia (Californian 

poppy) produces single or double 

blooms in shades of cream, 

crimson, yellow and orange 

and is a useful plant for poor 

soil that gets lots of sun. As well 

as the common single orange, 

eschscholzia varieties include 

double silvery pink Appleblossom, 

semi-double Milkmaid 

(cream) and two-tone Apricot 

Chiffon. 

Calendula, nasturtium, cosmos 

and cornflower plants also 

do well in poor, dry soils as long 

as they get plenty of sun. 

Hyacinths, tulips and narcissi 

can be lifted now and, keeping 

the yellowing foliage intact, 

planted in pots to ripen off. 

When the foliage has completely 

died, bulbs can be lifted, cleaned 

and stored.

Animal Facility Technician 

We are seeking an animal facility technician to 

join the team at the Manaaki Whenua-Landcare 

Research Animal Facility, in Lincoln, Canterbury, 

to help care for captive wild-caught and 

laboratory animals. 

The purpose of the role involves the daily care 

of animals (feeding and cleaning), trapping of 

feral animals and maintenance of the facility as 

required. The position is 18-month fixed-term, 

full-time (37.5 hours per week) and is based at 

our Lincoln site. 

This role requires a capable, practical person 

who is comfortable carrying out daily husbandry 

tasks for multiple animal species. You will have 

experience in working with wild-caught animals

Confident at auctions 

Looking confident may be all you need 

to be the last bidder standing when the 

hammer goes down. 

Does your blood pressure go sky-high at 

the sight of an auction room? Chances are 

some of your fellow bidders are doing all 

in their power to psych you out and win 

the bidding. 

Securing a property isn’t just about 

having the most money. Sometimes the 

winning bidder is the one with the most 

confidence. 

They use psychology to convince 

opposing bidders to give up, hoping to 

make everyone else think they’ve got more 

to spend than anyone else in the room. 

Too often, says Bayleys auctioneer 

Daniel Coulson, buyers have preconceived 

ideas about how the auction will unfold 

and have their confidence knocked when 

it doesn’t go their way. 

Two can play at that game. You just need 

to get your strategy right, says Coulson. 

Looking confident may be all you need 

to be the last bidder standing when the 

hammer goes down. 

To be that person you need to do some 

preparation. Make sure you go to a few 

auctions first to get used to them. 

Come bidding day, park yourself on 

the side at the front so that you can 

see everyone in the room and, more 

importantly, they can see you whether 

they’re at the back of the front. 

“It gives you a vantage point and shows 

the opposition you are bidding confidently 

against them.” 

“You are hoping that the other buyers 

have a plan in place,” says Coulson. 

Often that’s to start low. So if you come 

in with a relatively high first bid, you may 

rattle them. 

“The lower the open bid the more people 

can afford to bid,” says Coulson. So you 

could knock out some of the opposition 

before they even place a bid if you choose 

the right opener. 

Don’t start at $500,000 for a house you 

know is going to go for at least $800,000. 

Put an opening bid of $785,000 in, he says. 

Immediately your opposition is going to 

think it will go incredibly high and might 

be unnerved. 

Call each bid out confidently. “It shows 

you are comfortable and in control,” says 

Coulson. 

“The more confident you seem the more 

people will think you have done it before.” 

It’s a really good idea to vary your 

bidding increments, says Coulson. “If it’s 

going up by $2000 bids and it’s below your 

limit don’t be afraid to put a $10,000 bid 

in,” he says. 

“Your competition is always thinking 

about that next $2000 bid and if you 

change the rhythm from $2000 to $10,000 

you show you have the money and it 

changes where their next bid has to be. 

Instead of $4000 more it is $12,000 more.” 

Finally, if you’re a couple, says Coulson, 

make sure you’ve discussed every aspect 

of the auction before you get there. As 

soon as you start looking at each other 

or conferring, the opposition will think 

you’re weak.

Choosing your benchtop 

Should it be functionality over durability or 

cost over style? Is the benchtop porous that you’ve 

chosen; will it stain, and is it hygienic? Are you 

choosing an environmentally friendly option? 

Whether creating your kitchen for a new build or 

renovating your existing kitchen, there are many 

considerations when selecting a benchtop. Here are 

some suggestions: 

Marble/Granite 

Marble and granite, priced at the higher end of 

the market, are natural stone materials and can 

provide a stunning statement look. With gorgeous 

natural grains and patterns, both are porous. 

However, if not sealed regularly, these stones can 

be easily damaged by oil and anything acidic. They 

can also chip easily, and although heat-resistant, 

hot pans straight off the stove can cause issues. 

Engineered/Composite Stone 

As an alternative to marble or granite, 

engineered or composite stone benchtops are 

available. The composite material is made from a 

pressurised quartz and resin compound and may 

contain granite chips and glass. It doesn’t need to 

be sealed and is easy to look after, although it can 

chip. This hard-wearing material is available in a 

wide range of styles, colours and finishes and may 

be similar in price to some granites. 

Acrylic 

Acrylic benchtops are non-porous, have seamless 

joins and are incredibly hygienic. In addition, 

acrylic benchtops are easy to clean and maintain, 

being stain-resistant. If needed, they can be 

repaired and polished to look new again. However, 

placing hot pots directly on the surface can cause 

damage. 

Laminate 

The most economical option on the market is 

laminate (Formica) benchtops. Don’t let visions of 

the past, where orange Formica reigned supreme 

in the kitchen, deter you from this option. Many 

surface finishes and colour options are now 

available as technology has improved. Laminate 

is stain-resistant and, therefore, easy to maintain. 

However, chips can break the melamine coating 

layer. This break may mean water can seep in and 

cause the underlying chipboard to expand. 

If you are doing some DIY and looking at 

sustainable choices, perhaps you might consider 

resurfacing the existing benchtop using a specialist 

benchtop paint or overlaying it with a sheet of 

engineered stone. 

With so many choices available, your kitchen 

benchtop can meet your functional needs while 

being beautiful, stylish and within your budget. 

Timber 

Wooden benchtops are a big trend in 2022. 

Wood can bring a natural and softer look to your 

kitchen area. With a wide variety of wood options 

available, you can add character and colour to 

your benchtop. However, wooden surfaces are 

not maintenance-free and may require sanding 

back and resealing if damaged. In addition, being 

slightly porous, they are not as hygienic as other 

products.

Protect your asset with 

regular maintenance 

With your house being your biggest asset, why wouldn’t you want to protect it? 

Prevent significant repairs, save money 

and keep your home looking great by 

ensuring your house is well-maintained 

and safe. Maintenance can be done 

regularly or as needed to avoid minor issues 

from becoming major. However, you may 

need a professional for some jobs such as 

gas, plumbing, drainage, and some electrical 

repairs. 

Cleaning gutters and spouting is not a 

well-liked chore but is necessary. Gutters 

and spouting control your house’s flow of 

rainwater, and regularly clearing them will 

prevent a roof leak or water from entering 

your home. It’s also a great time to check 

the state of your roof cladding and flashings 

(weatherproof strips) to ensure problems are 

not developing. Get blocked and damaged 

drains fixed as soon as you become aware of 

any issues. 

Many homes in Selwyn still use a log 

burner for heating. As the chimney carries 

pollutants and toxic gases from your home, 

your chimney should be inspected and 

cleaned annually. Many house insurance 

policies require regular chimney cleaning. 

Check your smoke alarm and detectors twice 

a year when daylight savings changes. They 

could save your life and house. 

Mould or water stains could indicate 

plumbing leaks or weather-tightness 

problems. Water damage can lead to mould 

growth, especially if the problem is not fixed 

immediately. Any delays in repairs can be 

costly and lead to rot and structural issues. 

Prevent small problems from turning into 

big problems. Check areas around sinks, 

toilets, showers, cabinets, skirtings and water 

cylinders for leaks. Mould can contribute to 

a range of health problems. Make sure you 

take necessary health and safety measures, 

especially if there are signs of black mould. 

In houses built or renovated since the early 

1990s, mould, water stains and excessive 

moisture can also indicate that your home is 

a leaky building, requiring extensive repairs 

and investigation by professionals. 

Check your roof space for mice and other 

animals as they can chew through wiring 

and cause fires. Blackening around sockets 

and power points can indicate a wiring 

problem, so get this checked as soon as 

possible. Investigate any unusual noises 

when you plug in appliances, examine 

appliances’ cords, ensure they are safe, 

and regularly clean filters in dryers and 

washing machines. Before digging or garden 

maintenance, be aware of cables buried 

beneath the ground or located overhead. 

Keep yourself safe, as well as your 

biggest asset, by undertaking a few 

essential maintenance tasks or getting in 

a professional when needed and avoiding 

costly and significant repairs.

into old favourites

Upcycling is a trend that simply refuses 

to go away, with more and more of us 

turning dated, shabby furniture into 

something fresh and unique. 

And one of the simplest – and cheapest 

– ways to give the trend a go and breathe 

new life into your interiors is to give old 

wooden furniture a fresh lick of paint. 

When it comes to choosing a colour, 

your options are almost unlimited. 

Whether you want to keep it classic with 

neutrals, go bold with jewel-colours, keep 

it demure with pastels, or embrace your 

dramatic side with blacks and greys – you’ll 

find great options at any DIY store. 

If you’re particularly artistic, you can 

even get creative with a hand-painted 

mural or create a stencil to really make 

your pieces unique. 

Before you rush in, you’ll need to 

prepare. Start off by removing all hardware, 

such as handles, knobs and screws. 

If you plan on putting them back on 

again once you’re finished, make sure you 

keep them all together, with their original 

screws, so you don’t lose anything – but 

you may want to really update the piece by 

adding some new hardware. 

If the piece of furniture has drawers or 

doors make sure you remove them before 

you get cracking. It’s a good idea to label 

them as you go so you know what belongs 

where later on. 

With that job done, it’s time to give every 

surface you plan to paint a deep clean. Use 

sugar soap to get rid of any grease, dirt or 

grime, before going over everything with 

a clean, damp cloth to remove any trace of 

soap. 

Now is also the perfect time to tackle any 

imperfections or damage your old furniture 

may have – grab some filler to help mask 

any cracks, dints or gouges and once dry 

sand the whole thing to ensure a smooth 

finish. 

With the prep work done, it’s time to get 

painting. 

Put down old sheets or newspaper 

wherever you plan on painting, or – if the 

weather permits – head outside. 

Apply your paint in thin, even coats to 

ensure good coverage and to prevent drips, 

streaks and future chips. 

Once your happy with how the paint 

is looking, leave it dry and then seal it to 

protect it using either an oil, clear paint 

coat or wax paste. 

If paint is quite the look you’re going for, 

you can also stain old wooden furniture to 

give it a new lease of life.
