Islington elects new
council leader
LABOUR councillor Una O’Halloran has
been appointed as Islington’s new council
leader, , writes Local Democracy Reporter
Joe Steen.
HER election follows the resignation of
ex-leader Kaya Comer-Schwartz, who left
the post to take up the role of deputy mayor
for policing and crime at City Hall last month.
Having won her bid for Islington Labour
chief in the first round of voting on 4
November, a special council meeting took
place last night to confirm O’Halloran’s
nomination and election as council leader.
“You’ve put a lot of trust in me, but it’s not
about me — it’s about all of us. A leader is
only as good as her team,” Cllr O’Halloran
said.
“It is going to be tough. We have an
amazing Labour government and a Labour
mayor who has hit the ground running, but
we’ve been left a terrible mess from the
Tories. The Labour Party is about hope, and
people need hope. I’m going to speak to
every single one of you and see how we can
do this together. I’m going to be outspoken,
but I’m going to work with people.”
She thanked acting leader Cllr Diairmaid
Ward while paying tribute to her family and
all those who attended the meeting held at
short-notice.
O’Halloran joined the council as a
Caledonian ward representative in 2014, and
in that time has held the executive briefs for
homes and communities and community
development, and has also served as the
borough’s ceremonial mayor.
In a rare show of unity across the
chamber, members from each political
group welcomed her leadership.
Fellow Caledonian councillor Sara Hyde
(Labour) held back tears as she began
her effusive nomination speech, which
included an unexpected reference to the
musical Hamilton.
“This beautiful soul has worked so hard
since joining the council. She’s never shied
away from transparency and she tells it like
it is. Her grasp of detail gained through her
dedication has been second-to-none. We
are all with you as we seek to tackle poverty,
inequality and injustice, and continue to
make Islington the best place to live for
generations to come,” said Cllr Hyde.
Cllr Saiqa Pandor (Labour) praised the new
borough chief’s qualities, which had inspired
her own journey into local politics.
“Her ability to connect to the people of
Islington is no easy feat, but she manages it
with so much grace and respect.”
“She believed in me and my potential, and
I will always be thankful for her support.”
Cllr Ernestas Jegorovas-Armstrong, the
Green group’s deputy leader, said:
“We have a Labour-run council, a Labour
mayor and a Labour government, but
Islington residents expects the council to
deliver on huge issues—from climate change
to the housing crisis—and we wish you all
the best in those efforts.”
Cllr Phil Graham, an Islington Independent
who left the Labour group in July, said he
was “delighted” at the election of his friend
whom he had known since his time as an
activist.
“I hope she’ll be one of our strongest
leaders. She’s got a backbone made of solid
stuff, and you wouldn’t cross her.”
He also noted that the new leader had
influenced his becoming a local councillor
for Bunhill in 2018.

Taxi access to Bank Junction agreed
Image: LDRS
THE preferred entry and exit routes for black
cabs at Bank have been agreed following a
decision earlier this year to reintroduce the
vehicles back into the notorious junction.
City of London Corporation members earlier
today (November 19) voted to allow taxis to
drive in and out of Bank via Cornhill and
Poultry during the currently restricted hours
of 7am and 7pm Monday to Friday, writes
Local Democracy Reporter Ben Lynch.
The approved option will now go forward
for further traffic modelling. It is hoped the
trial of allowing taxis back into Bank Junction
will commence next spring.
The Corporation agreed in June to fully
reopen the junction to taxis for the first time
since mid-2017. Restrictions were introduced
at that time due to Bank having the unenviable
status as the most dangerous junction
in the Square Mile. Two years prior 26-yearold
Ying Tao had died after being crushed by
an HGV while riding to work.
Corporation officers had recommended
retaining the existing restrictions which limit
Bank Junction to pedestrians, buses and
cyclists between 7am and 7pm on weekdays.
Members at the Court of Common
Council however voted 57 to 21 to trial the
reintroduction of taxis, with proponents for
the scheme arguing it would improve access
for those with mobility issues.
At the Streets and Walkways
Sub-Committee meeting earlier today,
members were presented with papers
detailing five options for taxis to travel in
and out of Bank Junction. Officers recommended
against proposals which involved
turning movements due to safety concerns.
Instead, they suggested opting for entry and
exit via Poultry and Cornhill only, due to it
posing the lowest risk.
Officers added early discussions with
Transport for London (TfL), which must also
approve any proposed changes to the junction,
indicate this route is broadly supported.
A series of general risks associated with all
options were listed in the report, including
potential increases to bus times and uncertainty
around impacts further away from the
junction.
The recommended route, referred to
as ‘Option B’, drew support from several
members for its simplicity and safety
compared to the other proposals. Deputy
Shravan Joshi, Chair of the separate Planning
and Transportation Committee, said: “I think
from a communications and a clarity and a
safety perspective Option B to me gives the
best logical solution for what the Court has
asked for.”
Deputy Marianne Fredericks however
proposed that taxis instead journey from
Princes Street into Cornhill for those going
west to east and Cornhill to Poultry when
travelling east to west. She argued this would
only add in one new route due to the existing
access to Cornhill via Princes Street. “I’m
keen to ensure that we reduce the number
of options as far as possible to keep it as safe
as possible,” she told the committee.
Members however voted against Deputy
Frederick’s motion in part due to her
proposal not having been modelled by
officers. Some discomfort with the Court’s
original decision to reintroduce taxis to Bank
Junction was aired by Deputy Fredericks and
Common Councillor Mary Durcan.
Common Councillor Eamonn Mullally
also put to the committee they do have
the option of rejecting all of the proposals
before them, and so indicate to the wider
Corporation it is not appropriate to allow
cabs to use the crossing during restricted
hours. When put to a vote Option B was
approved, with Deputy Fredericks and Cllr
Mullally the only two against.
The paper which went to the committee
noted there is a risk the trial will not begin
in spring 2025 as planned due to potential
delays following the cyber attack on TfL. The
next steps involved further engaging with
TfL, liaising with taxi trade representatives
and preparing the proposed traffic model to
submit to the transport body. There will also
be a six-month public consultation once the
trial has begun.
Fake NYE tickets
FAKE tickets for London’s New Year’s Eve
fireworks display, often sold at massively
inflated prices, “pose a real risk of harm”
to the event’s attendees, the London
Assembly has warned, writes Local Democracy
Reporter Noah Vickers.
Officials at City Hall reported an “uplift”
in fake ticket selling last year, and they told
the Assembly that this “led to crowding
at barriers and delays for legitimate ticket
holders”.
In a letter to Sadiq Khan, the Assembly’s
oversight committee has urged the mayor
to “implement a short, proactive media and
social media campaign in December 2024
to warn the public (including international
tourists) about the risk of fake ticket selling
websites”.
The websites can appear “very
convincing”, said the committee’s
Conservative chair, Emma Best, adding
that “fake ticket selling has the potential to
damage London’s reputation with national
and international tourists”.
It comes following the news that the
final batch of official tickets for the event
– costing between £20 and £50 – will go
on sale at midday on Monday, December 2.
“Officials told us that fake websites are
reported to Action Fraud, and that they are
working closely with the police to tackle
other forms of fake ticket selling,” Ms Best
wrote in her letter to the mayor.
“They also described how this year ‘a
more robust ticketing system’ will be used
and the tickets will look different.
“These actions are welcome and necessary,
but in the context of an increasing
number of incidents, it is important that the
public is adequately warned and information
about buying legitimate tickets (and
avoiding fake tickets) is widely shared both
locally, nationally and internationally.”
The committee also recommended that
there “should be signage/warnings/checks
for tickets at earlier hoardings on the
approach to entry points, to warn people
that those with no or fake tickets will not
be able to enter”.
Approached for comment, a spokesman
for the mayor said: “London’s New Year’s
Eve fireworks celebrations are renowned
across the globe, with our spectacular
display of fireworks, lighting and music
getting better every year.
“This year we are enhancing security and
crowd management, and work is underway
to warn the public about fake tickets. This
includes clear and regular messaging that
will continue up until the event.
“We are very clear that anyone wishing
to attend must buy their tickets in advance
from Ticketmaster, the only authorised
outlet.”
The committee separately suggested
that City Hall “review and measure the
[environmental] sustainability of the event”,
though it was acknowledged that “the
carbon footprint of the event stems more
from the logistical set up, transportation
Kevin Hackert / unsplash
and delivery than the fireworks themselves”.
The first batch of official tickets went on
sale in October. Some ticket prices have
increased, compared with last year, “to
enhance security and crowd management
around the event, and cover increasing
costs seen across the industry”, the mayor’s
team said.
Londoners will however pay £15 less
on each ticket booked than those living
outside of the capital – meaning that they
can secure tickets for a number of viewing
areas at the same price as last year.
City Hall said it is “working closely with
a range of partner agencies including the
Met Police, TfL, local authorities and the
emergency services to deliver the event”.
Mr Khan said earlier this week: “I’m proud
that every year, the eyes of the world look
to London to see how we welcome in the
new year.
“Our spectacular display of fireworks,
lighting and music entertains and delights
Londoners and people from across
the globe, boosting our economy and
providing a fantastic advert for our tourism
industry, as we build a better London for
everyone.
“Our tickets are always in high demand,
so I urge anyone wanting to attend this
fantastic evening to buy them as soon as
possible from our only authorised outlet.”

NEW FOOD HALL CONCEPT SET
TO OPEN IN LIVERPOOL STREET
Image: Virtual Planit Macauley Sinclair for the CGI
BOXHALL City is a new food hall
concept set to open in Spring
2025 in London Liverpool Street.
It is BOXPARK Group’s newest
dining concept since the launch
of its Shoreditch Site in 2011.
With spaces for thirteen food vendors and
kitchens, the site is seeking innovative,
premium food and beverage brands to fill
the food hall, writes Ivana Syrota.
Unlike BOXPARK’s iconic shipping
container design, BOXHALL sets to transform
under-used city centre locations into
refined dining spaces with focus on heritage
and industrial buildings.
Boxhall City will be located in the restored
Metropolitan Arcade – an Edwardian arcade
located opposite Liverpool Street station,
as part of a 15-year deal with Places for
London, TfL’s property company and the
site’s freehold owners. The scheme aims to
cater to the 135 million annual visitors to the
station, and the 615,000 City workers on the
doorstep.
With options for breakfast, lunch and
dinner, the arcade also boasts a 3,000 sq
ft roof terrace with panoramic views across
the City, available for post-work drinks,
private hire and corporate events.
Ben McLaughlin, COO at BOXPARK, said:
“We have seen immense success with our
award-winning BOXPARK concept, and are
incredibly proud to have played a role in in
the success and growth of a huge number
of our popular street food brands.
Now, we are excited to see similar success
with our BOXHALL City destination. Unlike
our BOXPARK sites, BOXHALL City will
re-animate a historic slice of London – an
Edwardian shopping arcade – with a unique
mix of dining and drink experiences for
discerning foodies…
With its unparalleled location by Liverpool
Street, its attractive, historical setting, and
our unwavering commitment to finding the
best that London’s food and drink scene
has to offer, we’ve no doubt that BOXHALL
City will fast become Londoners’ favourite
foodie escape when it opens at the end of
the year.”
Mike Sinclair, director at Macaulay Sinclair,
added: “We’re really excited to be partnering
with the BOXPARK team on the interior
architecture and design of its latest concept
at BOXHALL City. The new Metropolitan
Arcade location is steeped in history and its
heritage is something we’re keen to preserve
and celebrate in our designs.
“Having worked with major hospitality
brands on protected sites including listed
buildings, we understand the importance
of sensitivity and respecting the building’s
history, while still contributing to each brand’s
individual ethos and story. We look forward
to unveiling more about our BOXHALL City
concept very soon, and for the public to
experience this unique new venue.”
BOXHALL City is planned to open by
Spring 2025, and feature thirteen fully
fitted kitchens ranging from 150 sq ft to
400 sq ft, alongside two bars, seating 600
covers on the ground floor and 200 on the
roof terrace. The BOXHALL City team will
consider proposals from candidates that
have a minimum of two years’ experience
operating in a customer-facing environment,
including those who are looking to
relocate or launch a new concept.

TRUMP’S RETURN TO POWER:
FUEL FOR THE CRYPTO BULL RUN OR BUBBLE?
CRYPTO expert, Mushumir Butt, with the
latest in cryptocurreny news and events.
THE election of Donald Trump
as the next U.S. president has
ignited a surge of optimism
across the crypto market,
propelling Bitcoin (BTC)
and altcoins to dramatic
new heights. Bitcoin, the pioneer
cryptocurrency, recently soared to an
all-time high of $98,739 on November
22, with its market cap nearing $2
trillion. Altcoins like Ethereum (ETH) and
Dogecoin (DOGE) have also joined the
rally, driven by market sentiment that
views Trump’s pro-crypto rhetoric and
policies as a significant tailwind for the
digital asset space.
A Pro-Crypto Shift in U.S.
Leadership
Trump’s vocal support for crypto shows a
marked departure from his initial skepticism.
During his 2024 campaign, he consistently
framed himself as the candidate who
would liberate financial innovation from
excessive regulation. His promise to make
the U.S. the “crypto capital of the planet”
has bolstered confidence among traders
and institutions, fostering a renewed sense
of legitimacy for digital assets.
This shift in rhetoric goes with broader
Republican support for deregulation, lower
taxes, and reduced oversight of financial
markets—policies that many in the crypto
industry see as conducive to growth.
Trump’s disdain for centralised financial
institutions, such as the Federal Reserve,
further signals potential for reforms that
could favor decentralised currencies.
The recent bull market shows this
optimism. Bitcoin’s 35.43% jump over the
past 30 days to $97,325 is proof of the
market’s belief in Trump’s pro-crypto policies.
Ethereum, up 35.47%, and Dogecoin,
which exploded by 150.58%, highlight the
rally’s broad appeal. However, the exuberance
also shows the volatility inherent
in the crypto market. While prices are
surging, most major altcoins remain below
their previous all-time highs, suggesting a
cautious optimism among traders.
Deregulation: A Double-Edged
Sword
Trump’s commitment to deregulation could
accelerate adoption by reducing bureaucratic
hurdles for blockchain startups and
cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance
and OKX. Policies encouraging the growth
of crypto mining and blockchain infrastructure
could strengthen the U.S.’s competitive
edge in the global market.
However, this approach is not without
risks. A lack of oversight could expose
traders to heightened fraud and manipulation.
Deregulation might also embolden
speculative bubbles, leading to abrupt
market corrections that harm retail investors.
Striking a balance between fostering
innovation and protecting market participants
will be crucial.
However, Bitcoin’s rally under Trump’s
influence could establish the cryptocurrency
as a more integral part of the global
financial system. Traders appear to be
flocking to BTC as a hedge against traditional
market instability. Consequently, its
status as “digital gold” may solidify further.
Altcoins like Ethereum, with its robust smart
contract ecosystem, could see increased
institutional interest, particularly if Trump
encourages the integration of blockchain
technology across industries.
Dogecoin’s dramatic rise is also notable.
As a token frequently championed by
Elon Musk, a prominent Trump supporter,
its performance shows how celebrity
endorsements and political alignment can
drive speculative interest. Moreover, DOGE
is the leading meme coin and its recent
rise is important for other meme coins like
Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Pepe (PEPE).
Challenges and Opportunities
Ahead
While the Trump administration’s embrace
of crypto may invigorate the market, several
challenges remain. Regulatory clarity
around taxation, anti-money laundering
measures, and central bank digital currencies
(CBDCs) will remain contentious topics.
International competition, particularly from
crypto-friendly nations like El Salvador and
the UAE, will test Trump’s ambition to make
the U.S. the leader in this space.
Additionally, Trump’s polarising nature
could alienate some market participants,
particularly those concerned about the
environmental impact of crypto mining.
Addressing these concerns will be essential
to building a more inclusive and sustainable
crypto economy. However, Trump’s
presidency has the potential to be a watershed
moment for the digital asset market.
His deregulatory policies and pro-crypto
rhetoric are likely to accelerate adoption
and innovation.
Nevertheless, the road ahead is fraught
with challenges that demand careful
navigation. If Trump’s administration can
harness the disruptive potential of crypto
and blockchain while ensuring a stable and
secure market, it could cement the U.S.
as the global leader in digital finance. But
if mismanaged, the exuberance of today’s
rally could give way to tomorrow’s disillusionment.
The stakes have never been
higher for Bitcoin, altcoins, and the broader
blockchain ecosystem.

ROYAL EXCHANGE
JEWELLERS
ESTABLISHED in 2004, Royal
Exchange Jewellers has been
providing the city’s need for fine
jewellery and luxury pre-owned
timepieces for 20 years.
Located on the outside of the
iconic Royal Exchange Building, home to
an incredible array of luxury brands, the
company is one of the last remaining independent
Jewellers in the City of London.
The director of the company started
his venture in the jewellery industry as an
apprentice for an independent jewellers
based in North London. Staying with the
same company for 20 years, he worked
his way to becoming the manager of the
new showroom which was located on the
outside of the Royal Exchange Building.
When the showroom was closed due to
the owner retiring in 2004, he made the
bold decision to open his own showroom,
Royal Exchange Jewellers, a few doors
along Threadneedle Street, staying on the
outside of the Royal Exchange Building,
and most importantly, in the City of London
where a good relationship had been established
with many clients.
Within the showroom is an extensive
collection of Diamond set and coloured
gemstone set jewellery crafted within the
company’s workshop, as well as a large
collection of pre-owned timepieces from
some the world’s finest Swiss made watch
brands.
As well as the exquisite items on show,
Royal Exchange Jewellers specialise in
creating exceptional items of bespoke
jewellery crafted within its workshop. Their
expert team are always willing to discuss
individual designs and talk you through
the process of designing and creating the
perfect engagement ring or unique item of
jewellery.
The team based within the showroom
boast an exceptional knowledge of the
wonderful world of jewellery as well as the
watch industry. They possess a passion
for providing a high standard of service,
quality and expertise. Knowing that almost
everything they are involved in is for a
happy occasion to create memories for
their clients drives this passion. There are
of course the usual stresses and strains of
every business, but being able to create
special moments for their clients makes it
all worthwhile.
As well as providing a high standard of
jewellery and pre-owned luxury timepieces,
Royal Exchange Jewellers provide a repair
and restoration service to existing jewellery.
They understand the importance of
keeping those special items of jewellery
and timepieces within a family, knowing
that sentimental value outweighs monetary
value on many occasions. With a decline
in independent jewellers in London, and in
particular within the City, there are very few
jewellers that are able to offer this service.
ON the 4th of November,
the company were
proud to celebrate its
20th anniversary. They
decided to celebrate the
occasion with a thank you
to their clients for the last 20 years and to
also extend this to the patrons of the City
of London and beyond. The thank you
comes by way of a celebrational sale of
up to 50% off items within the showroom.
With the company having never had a
sale before, it was decided this would be
the best way to show the appreciation
for the business and loyalty of their past,
present and future clients.
With the celebrational sale continuing
until Christmas Eve, now is the perfect
time to visit the showroom to find the
perfect item of jewellery for that extra
special Christmas present for your loved
ones.

Christmas at the Royal Exchange’s
Fortnum’s Boutique
‘Tis the season for feasting. When
you think of a quintissentially British
Christmas, your mind can’t help but
turn to Fortnum and Mason. For over
three centuries, the retailer has had
quite a bit of practice in catering to the
nation’s culinary appetites. Experience
the exceptional quality of Fortnum’s
Free Range Geese, raised with care near
the Suffolk coast on a small family farm.
The geese enjoy a naturally slow and
traditional rearing process, ensuring the
finest flavour and texture. Predominantly
fed on a single grain diet grown right on
the farm, each goose develops a rich
and distinctive taste that truly reflects its
environment. To enhance their flavour,
Fortnum’s geese are game hung for six
days, allowing the meat to mature and
tenderise naturally.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE CITY
Dame Joan Collins switches
on lights for London’s tallest
Christmas tree
Acting Legend Dame Joan Collins lit up
the Eastern City – literally - by switching
on London’s tallest Christmas tree this
month.
The massive 67 foot sustainable
Christmas tree is the latest edition to
the iconic City skyline and is part of the
Eastern City Business Improvement
District’s Festival of Light Campaign to
ensure this area is a place to visit and
enjoy not just to work.
The tree, created by The Christmas
Decorator, a company committed to
sustainability which has earned them
the Carbon Footprint Standard, is
made of 65,000 LED lights and over
800 red and gold baubles and is situated
outside the Pan Pacific London
hotel.
Over 200 people crammed the
plaza outside the hotel to catch a
glimpse of the global superstar and
see the iconic tree being switched on.
Dame Joan Collins said:“ I am
honoured to have been asked by the
Eastern City Business Improvement
District to officially switch on the lights
for London’s tallest tree. I love London.
I am a Londoner and although I have
homes in Los Angeles and France, my
heart will always belong to London.
This iconic City, with its rich, captivating
history and culture, has a pulse
and excitement second to none.
“You are the community that drives
change – not just in terms of new
ideas and global economic trends, but
in perception too. Celebrations like
this one help draw new audiences to
the City as it becomes a place to visit
and play, not just to work.”
Kate Hart, CEO of the Eastern City
BID, said: “This stunning Christmas
tree is a great example of how,
through partnership, we can achieve
mor and a great way to round off a
fabulous year of collaboration here in
the Eastern City.
“From the launch of our ambitious
realm vision in October to our
summer of sports earlier in the year,
we work hard to support the community
in this area. To amplify the work of
our business community, to work with
our partners at the City of London
Corporation to invest an add value,
to diversify this wonderful area and
unlock potential.”
• The tree will be available to see
until 5th January 2025.

SEVEN CHRISTMAS MARKETS
TO VISIT THIS FESTIVE SEASON
Covent Garden. Image: Daria Glakteeva/Unsplash
AS London starts to embrace
the festive season, Christmas
markets are opening up across
the city. Here is our ultimate
guide to the best ones this
winter, writes Amelia Braddick.
1. Leadenhall Market
A favourite for us the City Matters office,
Leadenhall Market offers a wide array
of pubs and restaurants year-round. Yet
during the festive season, it also hosts a
Christmas market popup at the weekend.
Expect stalls selling crafts, jewellery, children’s
toys, vintage furniture and more.
The SoLo Craft Fair Christmas Market
will be held on the 7 December and open
from 12 to 5pm.
Additionally, join a festive guided walk
held each Wednesday from 6.30pm to
8pm until 11 December. You’ll discover the
market’s holiday traditions, both past and
present. Tickets are priced at £8.30.
• leadenhallmarket.co.uk/

2. Southbank
Celebrate ten years of the Southbank
Winter market! The Queen’s Walk along
the Thames transforms into a festive scene,
lined with twenty alpine-style chalets, twinkling
lights and five pop-ups.
Choose from savoury favourites,
including, Truffle Burger, The Duck
Shed, Oh My Dog! and BAIT Seafood, or
newcomers such as The Cheese Toaster,
Voodoo Fries and Pabellon. If you fancy a
sweet treat, Utter Waffle, Dutch Pancakes
and Salvador Churros have you covered.
Get a headstart on your Christmas shopping
at the retail stalls, which offer unique
gift ideas like Old Maps Library, as well as
specialty skincare and candles.
Open until the 26 December.

3. Covent Garden Christmas
markets
You can shop at the Apple and Jubilee
Markets in Covent Garden year-round
but the area becomes especially magical
in November and December when the
Christmas decorations are put up. Marvel
at the festive installations, including 40
gigantic bells with bows, 12 giant baubles
and 8 spinning mirror balls. You can also
visit the 60ft Christmas tree with fairy lights
that brighten up the West Piazza.
Additionally, Festive Thursdays have
kicked off! Enjoy exclusive shopping and
dining offers, as well as workshops and
weekly choir performances from the
London International Gospel Choir and
The London Gay Men’s Chorus throughout
November and December, both of which
are raising money for Save the Children.

4. Christmas in Trafalgar Square
There are plenty of food and gift stalls at
Trafalgar Square’s Christmas market. Soak
in the festive atmosphere while enjoying
the view of the towering 65ft Christmas
tree.
Since 1947, each year the people of
Norway have gifted London a Christmas
tree in gratitude for Britain’s support for
Norway during World War II. The Christmas
tree is typically a Norwegian spruce (Picea
abies) and is usually aged between 50 and
60 years.
This year, the tree lighting ceremony will
take place on the 5 December at 5:30pm
and will involve carol singing and poetry
readings.

Spitalfields Market is open year-round but

matcha and unique blends.

thrilled to share our story with you. Johnny
Flowers isn’t just a flower shop; it’s a story
of love, diversity and community that has
been growing for over 120 years. Johnny,
our beloved founder, started as a family
business in Hoxton Market, with a passion
for bringing fresh, beautiful blooms to our
neighbours. Today, our little floral haven
has found its home in Spitalfields Market,
where we continue to share our blooms
with everyone who stops by.
This past year has been a whirlwind of
growth and change for us. Our team has
blossomed just like our flowers! Johnny, our
founder, leads with an unwavering commitment
to inclusivity, diversity, and women
empowerment. I’m an Indonesian student
at the University of Westminster, where I
study Fashion Business Management while
managing the admin and marketing side
of our business. Mary, our talented Social
Media Manager from China, is a recent
graduate who has brought our story to platforms
like Instagram and Chinese Redbook,
making Johnny Flowers a digital favourite.
Joachim, our Florist Assistant, works
tirelessly at our lovely Spitalfields kiosk
to ensure that every stem is arranged to
perfection. Nina, who specialises in our
funeral work, handles our most heartfelt
creations with incredible care and compassion.
And finally, there’s Saverro, our IT
wizard, who keeps all our tech running
smoothly—because even flower shops
need a little digital magic!
Our Home at Spitalfields Market
Our stall at Spitalfields Market is more than
just a kiosk; it’s a little piece of joy in East
London. We’re lucky to have such a diverse
customer base, from locals picking up
customised bouquets to visitors marvelling
at the kiosk’s vibrant colours. Every day,
we meet people looking for something
personal—a bouquet that says “I’m thinking
of you” or “You’re special to me.”
It’s these moments that make what we
do so rewarding. Our loyal customers
often share how our flowers have become
part of their stories, whether it’s for a
birthday, a wedding, or just to brighten
someone’s day. Check out our Google
Reviews! Because for us, each bouquet is
more than an arrangement—it’s a message,
a memory, a connection.
A Team That Reflects Our Values
Our team at Johnny Flowers mirrors the
diversity of the city we call home. We come
from different places, cultures and walks of
life, but we’re united by our shared passion
for flowers and community. Johnny’s vision
has always been about more than selling
flowers; it’s about creating an inclusive
space where everyone feels welcome.
Personally, being part of this team has
been such a rewarding experience. As an
Indonesian student, I’ve found a family
here, working alongside people like Mary,
Saverro, Joachim and Johnny himself, who
bring their interesting perspectives and
creativities into our beloved
flower shop. Together, we celebrate
our differences while working towards
a common goal: spreading joy through
flowers.
The Future Is in Full Bloom
Looking ahead, we’re excited to keep
growing—both as a business and as a
part of our community. We’ll continue
bringing fresh, locally-sourced blooms to
Spitalfields Market while exploring new
ways to connect with you, our wonderful
customers. Whether it’s through Instagram
reels, in-person workshops, or simply
chatting with you at the stall, we’re here to
share our love of flowers with you.
So next time you’re in East London,
come find us at Spitalfields Market, follow
our journey on Instagram at @johnnyflowers.florist,
or explore our blooms
online at https://johnnyflowers.florist/.
Whether you’re looking for a single rose
to brighten your day or a custom arrangement
for a special occasion, we’d love to
create something just for you. And if you’re
already a part of our story—thank you.
You’re the reason Johnny Flowers has been
able to bloom for over 120 years, and we
can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Why Choose Johnny Flowers?

flowers—we help you create unforgettable

Plan a family trip to Lapland UK
If you’re looking for a magical experience
to take the kids to this Christmas, then
LaplandUK is the perfect choice. This fourand-a-half-hour
immersive event which
Lapland UK. Image: Luke Dyson
is inspired by six best-selling books, and
which opens for a limited six-week run
in the build-up to Christmas each year,
brings together the scale and detail of film
production, with the believability of live
theatre to reimagine the untold story of
Father Christmas.
Situated within Whitmoor Forest on the
Crown Estate, Ascot, is a truly magical
experience that both human folk and small
folk will be fascinated by.
Highlights from the day include visiting
The Toy Factory, where elves, Whittle,
Conker and Wish are thrilled to welcome
your small folk to their workshop to help
them with their toy making. This is such a
fun and interactive experience for the kids,
where they can get involved and help with
assembling a cuddly toy. The team at City
Matters loved visiting The Elven Village - the
perfect spot for ice skating, writing letters
to Father Christmas with the kids for taking
those social media shots.
The magical finale is an intimate and
personalised visit to Father Christmas. As
you travel deeper into the snowy forest,
which looks spectacular, you’ll finally reach
Father Christmas’ woodland home. As
your small folk knock on Father Christmas’
door, you’ll meet the star of the show in
his beautifully decorated home, where they
will be gifted a lovely toy. You’ll have the
chance here to get some festive pictures
with Father Christmas.
The immersive theatrical performances
by the Elves, Father Christmas, Mother
Christmas and the performers at the Toy
Factory is phenomenal. The level of detail
that has gone into creating LaplandUK is
spectacular.
The team at City Matters was absolutely
amazed by the magical experience at
LaplandUK. If you’re heading there this
year, then be ready to create some unforgettable
memories that will last a lifetime.

TOP TIPS FROM THE TOP CHEFS
Turkey
Rob Mitchell, Executive Chef
at Drake & Morgan
“I recommend a dry brine for turkey,
which you do a day in advance - it leaves
a juicy turkey with the crispest skin! To dry
brine your turkey, pat all over with paper
towels and generously rub a mixture of
good quality sea salt, black pepper and a
little light brown sugar all over and inside
the turkey and, leave for at least 12 hours
in the fridge.”
Leftovers
Pavel Baranovs,
Head Chef at UBA
“Try something different and transform
cold turkey into a refreshing salad with
cheese and Caesar dressing or use it to
make chipotle turkey tacos packed with
leftover red cabbage and tomatillo salsa.”
Sides & gravy
Vivek Singh, CEO and Executive Chef
of The Cinnamon Collection
‘’Tamarind. Whatever sides you go for,
a simple jar of tamarind pulp will bring
them to life. Add it to your vegetables or
potatoes in the last five minutes when
they’re almost roasted, and it will make
everything taste so much fresher, livelier,
and lighter as it cuts through all the fat -
thank me later!’’
How to not let the turkey go dry
Head Chef Fabio de Paolis of
The Westin London City / Hithe + Seek
“Use a reverse roasting technique! Instead
of searing the meat first and then finishing
it in the oven, start by cooking the turkey
roulade at a low temperature (160°C) in
the oven, covered with aluminium foil, for
about an hour. After that, remove the foil
and increase the heat to maximum (you
can also turn on the grill) for the final 5-6
minutes to get a nice, crispy exterior.”
Gadgets & time saving
Adam Bateman, Executive Chef
at Straits Kitchen, Pan Pacific London
“Buy a meat probe – it takes all the guesswork
and worry out of cooking your
turkey or salmon, especially on Christmas
Day. It’s game-changing.“
Brasserie on the 36th floor, indulge in a
delightful three-course menu or Festive
Brunch at £79.50 per person. Just one
level up, Fenchurch is offering an elegant
Festive Tasting Menu with courses that
highlight unique seasonal flavours. Start
with Heritage Beetroot with marinated fig,
pickled onion, and creamed ricotta, or the
Jerk Salmon Ceviche, then savour mains like
Grilled Lobster with caramelised plantain or
Lumina Lamb Loin with glazed sweetbreads.
Conclude with Colston Basset Stilton ice

Each number in our Cross Code grid represents a different letter
of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start
you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid,
then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters
should go in the missing squares.
As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number
in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of
letters as you identify them.
