Young performers primed for
festive fun, piratical production
• By Winston Davey
SETH SHIPLEY and Gabrielle
Kavermann are just days away
from the biggest show of their
lives.
Seth, 14, from Parklands and
Gabrielle, 13, from Linwood, are
part of Luminaires’ Christmas
show Jingle All the Way on
Saturday and their play Pirates
of the Curry Bean which opens
in January.
For Curry Bean, Seth will play
the role of pirate Blunderbuss,
with Gabrielle playing naval
sailor Gooseneck.
Luminaires is a charitable
trust based in Phillipstown and
was set up by Franc Bol to give
young people opportunities in
the performing arts.
Seth discovered the group on
Facebook, while Gabrielle found
out about it
through school.
She joined its
Thursday workshops
before
becoming part of
the shows.
Gabrielle said
joining Luminaires
had been a
challenge.
“It’s absolutely terrifying but
a good confidence builder.”
Seth, who moved here from
Australia in 2019, said he had
enjoyed meeting like-minded
performers. Jingle All the Way,
which features songs, dancing
and seasonal skits, will be his
first time singing in a choir.
Said Bol: “Some people think
SMELLS A LOT
LIKE XMAS
Franc
NOW
BUSY: Luminaires members Seth Shipley and Gabrielle Kavermann are in the cast of
Jingle All the Way and Pirates of the Curry Bean. Many performers are doing double duty –
rehearsing Christmas songs while also practising their pirate skills.
I’m mad for doing a Christmas
show in December then Curry
Bean in January, and I’d agree.”
She decided to put on a
Christmas show as well because
of rehearsal schedules and the
number of people auditioning.
“Pirates of the Curry Bean is
very rehearsal intensive – we
rehearse three days a week and
Open 6 Days, Tues - Sun | Ph 337 8214
Shop 2, 73 Centaurus Road,
Huntsbury, Christchurch
that means some families can’t
commit to that much time.”
Curry Bean had about 100
people audition but only 50
roles available so a lot of people
were missing out, but Jingle All
the Way could have “as many
people as we wanted”, Bol said.
“The good part of a Christmas
show is Christmas songs are
familiar, everyone knows them.”
By doing two shows, Bol said
they can cross-promote – some
of the Curry Bean cast will
perform in Jingle All the Way
and sing Christmas songs as
pirates and change lyrics like “a
partridge in a pear tree” to “a
parrot in a palm tree”.
Both shows will feature a
large number of first-time
performers, including Seth
and Gabrielle, something Bol
said was due to the group’s
atmosphere of acceptance.
“We treat everyone as if they
belong, even if it’s their first time.”
She said the group takes time to
talk to first-time performers and
will buddy them up with more
seasoned actors.
“We quietly talk to the ones
struggling and even provide extra
communication with parents or
caregivers.”
Tickets for Jingle All the Way
are flexibly priced, meaning
people can pay what they want,
starting from $5. Tickets for
Pirates of the Curry Bean are $5
for children, $10 for community
service card holders and $15 for
adults.
• Jingle All the Way is at
The Piano on Saturday,
while Pirates of the Curry
Bean is at the Hagley
College theatre from
January 21-26. Tickets for
both shows are available at
Mothers caring for those in hospital
MARY GOULTER never expected her
son’s first surgery would be within hours
of his birth.
Levi’s oesophagus wasn’t connected
to his stomach and he underwent emergency
surgery in January at just eighthours-old.
They spent another month in the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit – a place where
one in 10 babies born in New Zealand are
admitted at birth.
“It’s was a very difficult experience”
Goulter, from Bishopdale, said.
While in hospital, received a care
package from One Mother to Another,
an award-winning charity that supports
more than 6000 parents with hospitalised
children in the South Island.
“It made me feel looked after and cared
for, which is something that I didn’t have
the capacity to do for myself.
“I often think about how truly kind the
gesture was.”
One Mother to Another
is now in its busiest
time of year as it packages
up its regular monthly
care packages, but also extra
care packages for those
in hospital on Christmas
Day.
The packages provide
Joy Reid
practical and emotional support, including
items needed in the hospital environment,
such as toiletries, as well as treats
and items to aid mental well-being – such
as a handwritten note of support.
Goulter still remembers the
handwritten note and a crocheted heart
ornament.
CARING FOR MUMS: Mary Goulter with son Levi. In January, Levi underwent emergency surgery just hours after
being born. A care package from One Mother to Another made Goulter feel cared for during a ‘very difficut’ time.
“As a crocheter myself, I know the
love, effort and skill that was involved in
making that.”
To help fund the care packages, One
Mother to Another has launched a
crowdfunding campaign.
Said chief executive Joy Reid: “It’s hard
enough being in hospital with a sick
child during the year, but to be there over
Christmas and during the holiday period
is that much harder. Yet it is the reality
for hundreds of parents and whānau.”
New U3A to start in Opawa
Maternal mental health is a significant
challenge in New Zealand, particularly
around the time of childbirth and for
mothers with hospitalised children.
Research indicates women are at a
heightened risk of mental illness during
this period, with emotional struggles
linked to their infants’ illnesses and
disrupted bonding.
One Mother to Another aims to
address this by fostering connection,
validating the experiences of whānau, and
promoting empowerment.
“We don’t want parents and whānau to
feel unseen or invisible. We want them to
know they are not alone,” Reid said.
TOUGH TIME: Mary Goulter’s son Levi spent a month in the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit – a place where one in 10 babies born in New Zealand
are admitted at birth.
A new U3A (University of
the Third Age) plans to
start in February based at
St Marks Church in Opawa.
“Learning is life-long,” said
one of the organisers,
Yvonne Boulton. “There are
93 clubs throughout
New Zealand 18 of which
are in Canterbury. We
organise events and
activities for an increasing
number of people who are
no longer in the workforce
and who are interested in
furthering their knowledge
in everything from art to
cycling, photography,
history to science, in a
friendly environment.”
Interest in the new
club has come from
local groups where
their memberships are
overflowing and there
are increasing numbers
of people on waiting lists.
“We are aware that some
people are having to wait
more than two years to
join U3A which is far too
long,” she said.
“This is not about study,
it is about increasing
knowledge in a social
setting. It is one of the
aims of U3A, that people
get together and learn
something new or improve
their knowledge about a
topic that interests them.”
The new U3A will have
its first meeting at St
Marks Church on Tuesday
10 December at 10am.
Finding a suitable venue
that could hold at least
150-200 people was
quite challenging and we
are lucky that St Marks
is recently renovated
and has all the latest AV
equipment.
“We invite anyone over 55
who is interested, to come
along and find out more,”
Yvonne Boulton said.
Save time and make delicious meals
Prep now, enjoy later.
Love Food Hate Waste
makes the case for
the benefits of makeahead
meals
NOW IS THE perfect time to get
prepared before the busy summer
and festive season, and there’s
no better way to do that than by
embracing the power of makeahead
meals.
Not only will the meals save you
time and energy, but they will also
help reduce food waste and ensure
you are eating well throughout the
season.
Here’s how you can batch cook
and prepare versatile ingredients
ahead of time, so you’re ready for
any summer occasion without the
stress.
Start with proteins
Proteins are an excellent
starting point when it comes to
batch cooking. Grilling chicken,
roasting lamb, or marinating tofu
ahead of time provides a solid
foundation for various meals.
For example, a large batch of
grilled chicken breasts can be the
star of your barbecue one night,
sliced into a salad the next day,
and then wrapped in a tortilla
with veges to make chicken and
vegetable fajitas later in the week.
Marinated tofu is just as
versatile – it can be grilled for a
stir-fry, added to a Buddha bowl,
or layered into a sandwich.
Cooking proteins in bulk gives
you flexible options for the week
ahead and reducing prep time.
Batch cook grains
Grains like quinoa and rice can
easily be cooked in large batches
and stored for several meals. Once
prepared, grains serve as the
perfect base for multiple dishes.
Toss them into salads, pair them
with stir-fries, or mix them into
grain bowls.
To ensure they stay safe and
fresh, make sure to cool cooked
grains quickly by spreading them
out on a tray, then transferring
them to airtight containers before
refrigerating or freezing.
This keeps them at their best
and ready to go for your next
meal.
It is also important to remember
the 2:2:2 rule when dealing with
rice.
Cool quickly and get it into the
fridge within two hours, safe to
eat in the fridge for up to two days
and good to freeze for up to two
months for best quality.
Prep your veggies
Roasting or grilling vegetables
like capsicums, courgettes and
carrots in advance can make
meal preparation a breeze.
Once prepped, these veges
can be added to salads, served
as sides, or incorporated into
wraps.
You can even parboil and
freeze potatoes ahead of time,
finishing them off in the oven
later for quick and crispy roast
spuds.
Leftover vegetables can be
repurposed easily – toss them
into a frittata, stir them into
a curry, or use them as pizza
toppings.
Prepping vegetables ahead
reduces the risk of spoilage and
ensures you’re making the most
of what’s in your fridge.
Don’t forget sauces
and dressings
Sauces and dressings can
elevate even the simplest meals,
and batch cooking them is a
smart move.
Pesto, marinara, or vinaigrette
can all be made in bulk and
frozen in ice cube trays.
This way, you can simply pop
out what you need and add a
burst of flavour to pasta, salads,
or sandwiches.
A home-made tomato
marinara is incredibly versatile
– it can be used for pasta, pizza,
or even as a topping for grilled
proteins.
By embracing make-ahead
meals and with a little planning
and resourcefulness, you can
breeze through the season while
cutting down on food waste,
enjoying more delicious meals
with ease.
Chicken & vegetable fajitas
Ingredients
1 Tbsp oil
450g leftover or frozen vegetables
2-3 tsp fajita seasoning
400g can chopped tomatoes (or
fresh tomatoes if you have them)
250g leftover roast or barbecued
chicken, shredded
8 tortillas
To serve:
grated cheese, sour cream
Method
• Heat the oil in a large frying
pan and fry the vegetables for 5
minutes.
• Add the fajita seasoning and
cook for 1 minute. Stir in the
chopped tomatoes, rinse the can
with a dash of water and add to
Have yourself a thrifty Christmas
Christmas is a time to get together
and celebrate with your nearest and
dearest, but it can also be one of the
most expensive times of the year.
However, with many of us feeling the
pinch more than usual lately, you may
be looking to keep costs low – but the
good news is there’s plenty of ways to
save a few dollars without sacrificing
the joy of the season.
With a little creativity and careful
planning, you can still have a
memorable Christmas without breaking
the bank.
Set a budget
Firstly, before you get started set a
budget. You can set a budget for the
whole thing, or make yourself several
smaller budgets for presents, food and
drink, decorations, days out etc.
Once you’ve set a budget make sure
you stick to it. The key to not blowing
your budget lies in planning ahead and
resisting the urge to splurge on impulse
buys. You can even download apps that
will help you create an easy-to-follow
budget.
Get crafty
Giving gifts doesn’t have to be
expensive – a handmade present, such
as freshly baked gingerbread biscuits,
knitted scarf, or personalised photo
album, can be more meaningful than
something shop-bought.
And you don’t need to limit your
DIY skills to gift giving, you can also
decorate your home on a shoestring by
making your own wreath or ornaments
– there are plenty of great easy craft
ideas you can find online, and you can
even get the kids involved to keep them
occupied.
Hunt for freebies
to Christmas, such as festive parades
and caroling events.
Pack a picnic and head to your local
park to let the kids blow off some
steam, or even just plonk yourself down
in front of the TV for a festive movie
marathon.
A potluck Christmas feast
If you’re hosting a Christmas
brunch, lunch or dinner, save
cash – and time – by asking
your guests to bring a dish.
It’s a good idea to keep a
list of what everyone is
bringing so you know what
is covered and what you’ll
need to make.
As well as helping to
keep costs low, you’ll also
spend less time in the
kitchen and more time
enjoying the day. Win/
