Mothers care for another
in hospital at Christmas
MARY GOULTER never
expected her son’s first surgery
would be within hours of his
birth.
Levi’s oesophagus wasn’t connected
to his stomach and he
underwent emergency surgery in
January at just eight-hours-old.
They spent another month in
the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
– a place where one in 10 babies
born in New Zealand are admitted
at birth.
“It’s was a very difficult experience”
Goulter, from Bishopdale,
said.
While in hospital, received a
care package from One Mother
to Another, an award-winning
charity that supports more than
6000 parents with hospitalised
children in the South Island.
“It made me feel looked
after and cared for, which is
something that I didn’t have the
capacity to do for myself.
“I often think about how truly
kind the gesture was.”
One Mother to Another is now
in its busiest time of year as it
packages up its regular monthly
care packages, but also extra care
packages for those in hospital on
Christmas Day.
The packages provide practical
and emotional support, including
items needed in the hospital
environment, such as toiletries,
as well as treats and items to aid
mental well-being – such as a
handwritten note of support.

the handwritten note and a
crocheted heart ornament.
“As a crocheter myself, I know
the love, effort and skill that was
involved in making that.”
To help fund the care packages,
One Mother to Another has
launched a crowdfunding
campaign.
Said chief executive Joy
Reid: “It’s hard enough
being in hospital with
a sick child during the
year, but to be there over
Christmas and during
the holiday period is that
much harder. Yet it is the
reality for hundreds of
parents and whānau.”

Maternal mental health
is a significant challenge
in New Zealand,
particularly around
the time of childbirth
and for mothers with
hospitalised children.
Research indicates
women are at a
heightened risk of mental
illness during this period, with
emotional struggles linked
to their infants’ illnesses and
disrupted bonding.
One Mother to Another aims
to address this by fostering
connection, validating the
experiences of whānau, and
promoting empowerment.
“We don’t want parents
and whānau to feel unseen or
invisible. We want them to know
they are not alone,” Reid said.

Impact on facilities management hailed

The city council’s recreation,
sport and events operation manager
can now add national recreation
and sport award recipient to
the list.
Rzoska, who lives in Halswell,
received the Paul Stuart Memorial
Award at the Recreation Aotearoa
Awards for his outstanding contribution
to the facility management
sector.
He has had a long career in
the industry with 23 years in
operations management, 10 on
the front lines of the sector and
five in his current role for the city
council.
Rzoska has worked to reduce
landfill waste, and has been actively
transitioning recreation and
sport facilities to energy-efficient
systems while working to eliminate
the use of fossil fuels.
He has a strong focus on the
health, safety and wellbeing
of staff and customers. He has
also led continual improvement
in dealing with unacceptable
behaviour, including involvement
in implementing the city council’s
Be Cool Not Cruel campaign.

Award for Moore after
successful golfing year
GOLFER COOPER Moore
picked up a special high achiever
award at the recent Rotary
Club of Bishopdale-Burnside
Community Service Awards.
Moore, a St Bede’s College
student playing out of
Clearwater, has had a stellar year
competing domestically and
abroad.
In May, he won both the men’s
and under-19 Canterbury golf
orders of merit before taking up
an invitation to play in June’s
R&A Junior Open at Kilmarnock
in Scotland where he finished
runner-up.
His efforts saw him named as
Canterbury men’s golfer of the
year at a ceremony in August.
Moore then won his maiden
New Zealand amateur title at
Auckland’s Titirangi club at the
beginning of November, beating
fellow teenager Roddy Turnbull
in the final.
Eleven awards were presented
by club president Garry
Hampton who said the ceremony
was always a highlight of the
club’s year.
Said Hampton: “The
achievements and calibre of all
the recipients is impressive so it’s
appropriate they are recognised
for the contribution they make to
the Christchurch community.”
YOUNG STAR: Cooper Moore has had a standout year,
including an invitation to the R&A Junior Open in Scotland
where he finished second.

Noel swims daily at 86
NOEL SAXTON swims to keep
fit, stay social and break records.
The 86-year-old trains most
mornings at Jellie Park Recreation
and Sports Centre, swimming
lengths with a squad of up
to nine others.
With over 50 years with Surf
Lifesaving New Zealand, Noel
says he’s been swimming for
most of his life and is continuously
setting new goals.
“I’ve always had a goal of
doing well at Masters World
Athletics Champs. I try to make
new records and find myself
constantly setting new goals – I
thoroughly enjoy it.”
Noel’s surf lifesaving started
with in New Plymouth, followed
by a time in Wellington. He
then spent several decades at
Taylors Mistake.
His days are now predominantly
spent training at Jellie
Park.
“By the time I’ve walked to
the pool, spent a few hours
swimming laps, had a coffee
with my swimming mates and
walked home, half the day is

gone,” Noel said.
“I swim because I love
it – I love the challenge of
competitions, and it’s a great
way to keep fit.”
Noel’s past awards include
New Zealand records at Fina
World Swim Masters in Australia
in 2008 and Italy in 2012
in freestyle and individual medley.
He also was second, fourth
and fifth in the 3km open water
swims at the world masters
in Christchurch (2002), Perth
(2008) and Italy (2012).
Noel received the Jasi Masters
Swim Club swimmer of the year
in 2000, 2007 and 2008, and the
club’s Paul McStay Trophy in
2023.
Noel’s go-to swimming spot
for an outdoor dip is his old
stomping ground at Taylors
Mistake, or the Jellie Park
outdoor pools over the summer
period.
“The outdoor facilities are
fantastic, I love the opportunity
to carry out my training in
the open air – whatever the
weather,” he said.

Have yourself a thrifty Christmas
Christmas is a time to get together
and celebrate with your nearest and
dearest, but it can also be one of the
most expensive times of the year.
However, with many of us feeling the
pinch more than usual lately, you may
be looking to keep costs low – but the
good news is there’s plenty of ways to
save a few dollars without sacrificing
the joy of the season.
With a little creativity and careful
planning, you can still have a
memorable Christmas without breaking
the bank.
Set a budget
Firstly, before you get started set a
budget. You can set a budget for the
whole thing, or make yourself several
smaller budgets for presents, food and
drink, decorations, days out etc.
Once you’ve set a budget make sure
you stick to it. The key to not blowing
your budget lies in planning ahead and
resisting the urge to splurge on impulse
buys. You can even download apps that
will help you create an easy-to-follow
budget.
Get crafty
Giving gifts doesn’t have to be
expensive – a handmade present, such
as freshly baked gingerbread biscuits,
knitted scarf, or personalised photo
album, can be more meaningful than
something shop-bought.
And you don’t need to limit your
DIY skills to gift giving, you can also
decorate your home on a shoestring by
making your own wreath or ornaments
– there are plenty of great easy craft
ideas you can find online, and you can
even get the kids involved to keep them
occupied.
Hunt for freebies
There are plenty of free things to do
throughout Christchurch on the run up
to Christmas, such as festive parades
and caroling events.
Pack a picnic and head to your local
park to let the kids blow off some
steam, or even just plonk yourself down
in front of the TV for a festive movie
marathon.
A potluck Christmas feast
If you’re hosting a Christmas
brunch, lunch or dinner, save
cash – and time – by asking
your guests to bring a dish.
It’s a good idea to keep a
list of what everyone is
bringing so you know what
is covered and what you’ll
need to make.
As well as helping to
keep costs low, you’ll also
spend less time in the

Christmas is the time to come together

Christmas Eve box
Kick start the celebrations – and
excitement – early by making a Christmas
Eve box for your little ones.
Simply grab a large decorative box or
hamper, and fill it with some new PJs,
socks, hot cocoa mix, sweet treats, and
a book you can read before bed to help
them nod off before Santa arrives.
Christmas countdown
We’re all familiar with advent calendars
but this year have a go at making a
completely personalised countdown to the
25 December.
You could come up with 24 different
daily activities you can do as a family,
such as baking gingerbread cookies,
decorating the tree, or a day out to meet
Santa.
If that sounds a bit too high energy, why
not create a list of 24 Christmas movies
to watch together? You can make it feel
extra special with festive snacks and hot
