OH MY GODDESS: KAROLINE .............................. 21
“What you can do is prepare
yourself to be open; open for the
pipeline to open and the magic
to flow down through us. It
means leaving yourself behind.
It’s not a question of, Oh God,
don’t let me fuck up, or
anything like that. It’s a
question of,
“Here I am. Work me, Lord.”

BY RELUCTANT GENIUS
As we get older, it seems like almost every day we lose someone we
know. Whether it’s a family member, a friend, an enemy, an entertainer.
The list goes on and continues to grow. Just a few weeks ago the
Deadhead world was, once again, crushed by the news of a member’s
passing. Considered one of the greatest touring bands of all time the
Grateful Dead has always had, and still has legions of loyal fans, unlike
any other. With Lesh recently dying, there are very few original
members left, but here’s guessing that the show must go on and
probably will forever.
Here’s a little bit more information regarding one of the best bass
players in the history of music
Phil Lesh is an iconic American musician best known as the bassist for
the Grateful Dead, a band that played a pivotal role in the evolution of
rock music and the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
Born on March 15, 1940, in Berkeley, California, Lesh developed a
passion for music early in life, studying classical music and developing
a deep understanding of harmony and improvisation.
In 1965, he co-founded the Grateful Dead with Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir,
and others, bringing a unique sound that blended rock, folk, blues, and
jazz. Lesh's innovative approach to the bass guitar, characterized by his
use of counterpoint and melodic lines, set him apart from traditional
bass players. His playing was integral to the band's improvisational
style, which allowed for long, exploratory jams during live
performances.
After the Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995, following Garcia's death,
Lesh continued to perform, forming Phil Lesh & Friends and
participating in various musical projects. He remains a beloved figure
in the music community, known for his contributions to the jam band
scene and his commitment to musical experimentation. Lesh's legacy
endures as a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity in
music.

“I am Spartacus!” Over the years, I've uttered this iconic phrase hundreds of times. The first time in a public forum, I was 8. It was on
Halloween 1967 on our neighbor Tommy & Carole's back porch. I'd rehearsed it many times in our apartment, on the first floor of my
parents' 3-family flat roof home in the Platts Mills section of Waterbury CT, at the time, still a vibrant blue collar manufacturing city of
over 100,000. My 11-year-old brother Mike & I would go trick-or-treating together...just the two of us. Halloween was great in Platts
Mills. We'd hit 150 homes or so. Imagine, two boys, out alone on Halloween, ringing doorbells or knocking on that many doors, at 11 and
8. It was a much safer world back then. In '67, I was a gladiator. My Mom made my costume: a “tin foil” and cardboard armor, sword &
shield, and mask-less football helmet with a whisk broom glued on top. I'd loudly decry, “I AM SPARTACUS!”, at every door. The
phrase, one of Stanley Kubrick's most defining, a full year before he became the conic director we know today. As usual, Mike was a
hobo. For younger readers out there, a hobo was that eras version of a homeless man. Contrary to the homeless today, hobos were
respected; treated with kindness; admired even, for their adventurousness, riding the rails from sea to shining sea, picking up odd jobs
along the way. It's no wonder that my pillow case, the treat bags of the lower middle class back then, was so full & heavy, I had to drag it
up the Platts Mills hills by the end of the night. Mike, The Disrespected Hobo, was no Spartacus. His paltry pillow case was, at most, a
third of mine. Since hobos were respected and treated with kindness, we'd even things when we got home. Why, you might be
wondering, would an 8-year-old boy want to be a gladiator for Halloween in 1967, just months after the Summer of Love, when virtually
every kid in America was a tie dyed hippie that year? And, Great Caesar's Ghost, how would he even know about Spartacus? Well, some
things never change. After school, elementary schoolboys would play sports and rough house, as they do now. It's been this way since
before slave boy Spartacus was born in the first century BC. Mom understood this, but she insisted that at least one day each week, I
spend with her watching the Afternoon Movie, which ran about the time I got home from school until just before dinner. It was there that
I developed my love for movies; sitting on the sofa watching old films on our black & white television set together, as focused as a
gladiator, as if my life depended on it! There I saw my first Stanley Kubrick film, rejoiced in Kirk Douglas as he shouted with all the
gladiators, “I AM SPARTACUS!”, when the Roman guard came to take him away. Those times with Mom turned me into the film buff
and Kubrickhead. They inspired me to: shout “I AM SPARTACUS!” on Halloween 1967; see every of Stanley movie dozens of times;
and watch any film I could by the myriad of directors who think of him as a mentor, including.
Ridley Scott, who regularly cites Stanley as an influence. Their relationship goes back so far that, while struggling to satisfy the studio
and include a less dark ending to Blade Runner, Ridley called Stanley and asked for permission to use some of the footage from the
helicopter at the beginning of The Shining for the so-called “happy ending” to his film's U.S. theatrical release. The two even have
similar subjects. Scott directed one feature last year, Napoleon; Kubrick wrote the screenplay to a never-made Napoleon after 2001 was
released. Similarly, Gladiator and Spartacus are based on fictionalized historical events.
Gladiator II, which stands alone but is aided by seeing the first film in preparation, takes place 16 years after Emperor Marcus Aurelius
was murdered by his son Commodus in 180 AD. The Roman Empire is ruled by fraternal twins, Emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and
his mentally unstable, feminine brother Geta (Joseph Quinn). The Emperors have sent General Acacius (Pedro Pascal) to attack the North
African coastal province of Numidia by fleet from the Mediterranean. Numidia's leader, Jubartha (Peter Mensah), prepares his warriors
for the attack, under the leadership of Hanno (Paul Mescal). Their efforts are futile against Acacius and the Roman Army/Navy.
Thousands of Numidians are killed. Many others, including Jubartha & Hanno, are taken as prisoners of war and sold into slavery. Soon
thereafter, Macrinus (Denzel Washington) purchases Jubartha & Hanno for training as gladiators.
As of this writing, discounting its L.A. premiere and the Tokyo Film Festival, Gladiator II has been out one day in the U.S., and 10 or less
in most other countries. It already has plenty of Oscar buss, and has earned almost $100M of its $250M budget. 4 Stars!
