Michaela Richardson was born in Germany and now lives
in the very south of Austria. She is one of the few
European artists who have mastered the ancient technique
of encaustic wax painting. This goes back to the
Egyptians and was also used by the Romans and Greeks.
It involves burning hot beeswax with pigments into a
rigid surface.
Richardson sometimes combines encaustic with
contemporary digital photography. Her two- and threedimensional
artwork spans from ancient to modern,
creating aesthetic, modern works with exceptional depth
and unique style.
The artist in her former life was a doctor of
neuropsychology and worked as a clinical psychologist
and psycho-oncologist for a long time. Her work with
cancer patients in particular prompted her to devote
herself entirely to her passion for wax painting and
photography for several years.
Michaela Richardson has exhibited nationally and
internationally in the United States, Germany,
Switzerland, Slovenia and Austria.

ENCAUSTIC (WAX PAINTING)
This technique has its origins in Greco-Roman
antiquity and is therefore much older than oil painting.
In encaustic painting, hot beeswax is mixed with
dammar, a tree resin. Pigments are then added to create
the various colors. These are applied in liquid form to a
wooden base and then melted and baked with a gas
burner ('encaustic' comes from the ancient Greek
ἐγκαυστική [τέχνη] énkaustikē [téchnē], i.e. the art of
making baked paintings'). In this process, up to 40
layers of wax are applied on top of each other, which
gives the paintings enormous depth and shine. When
using relatively cold wax, structures can be added and
exciting effects can be created by engraving or
scratching. Wax painting can also be combined with
oil sticks, pastels, alcohol inks and shellac - the
technique is incredibly fascinating...
