T H E W A N D E R E R

from the manager

ian evatt

It’s good to be back in action tonight with the chance to

progress in the Vertu Trophy and build more momentum

going into Saturday’s big game back here against Wigan.

I was disappointed that our fixture at Bristol

Rovers last Saturday wasn’t postponed earlier to

save our fans setting off or waiting to potentially

make a long and tricky journey.

We will, of course, have to go back down there

at a later date but that’s for another time and our

focus immediately moved on to tonight and the

games to come at a busy time of the season.

We are in no way taking the Trophy tie against

Huddersfield lightly as we want to progress

in the competition and keep that avenue

open as well going into the new year.

But, equally, we know our priority is the league and

tonight’s game will give us a welcome opportunity to

try and pick up where we left off against Mansfield a

week ago and aid our preparations for the weekend.

It wouldn’t have been ideal to have gone into

the game against Wigan having not played for

10 or 11 days as we know how important that

match is to everyone for a variety of reasons.

It’s vital that we build on this good run we’re

on and keep putting points on the board

to potentially move into the top six and

nearer those at the head of the table.

And we also know what it would mean to you, the

fans, to win a fixture that has not brought out the

best of us in recent seasons. We are determined

to put the record straight so getting game time

for some of the players this evening and keeping

them in the groove will be very welcome.

We know, however, it will be a tough game

against a very good Huddersfield side under

Michael Duff and I welcome him, his staff,

players and the visiting supporters.

Myself and Duffo have taken each other on

many times as players and managers. He’s

someone I have a lot of respect for and I know

we will have to play better than we did the

last time we met to get the result we want.

I am fully confident we will and if we can

perform up to our best hopefully that’s enough

to take us through to the next round. I’ve

already said the league is the one that really

matters but we also want to do well in the cups

and this is our last opportunity this season.

Lengthy cup runs are good for the fans, players

and good for business and we all know where

this competition can lead so we will be doing

our best to take another step tonight.

If we can go through, the next round comes in

January which allows us to concentrate on the

important league games over the festive period and

then potentially have games in two competitions

to look forward to and give valuable game time

to players who are heading back to fitness.

As things stand, I’m hopeful we could have close to

a full squad going into January with the possibility

of adding more signings in the window. When that

time comes we want to be in there fighting with

lots to play for and if we continue our recent good

form there’s no reason why that won’t be the case.

Thanks for your support tonight

and enjoyed the game.

Ian

“It’s nice to score and have a hand in goals that

matter and thankfully those that went in helped

us get the points and wins we needed to top the

group and earn a home draw in the last-32 with the

chance to compete and try and progress further.”

Collins’ performances for the Whites last month

saw him again win the most votes from fans to take

the November prize ahead of wing-back Szabolcs

Schön and fit-again captain George Thomason.

Wanderers have re-arranged a couple of their

League One fixtures for new dates in January.

The Whites will now visit Rotherham United on

Saturday, 11th January (KO 12.30pm).

Wanderers were due to face Charlton on that date

but the Addicks’ progress to the third round of the

FA Cup has meant a switch for the fixture at the

Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Aaron Collins made it a win double when

he added the Vertu Trophy Player of the

Round award to his Wanderers’ Kia Player

of the Month prize for November.

Collins topped a supporters’ poll to

win both awards after rattling in four

important goals during the month.

His two goals against Fleetwood in the Vertu

Trophy in November added to a fine strike at

Barrow and an assist against Aston Villa’s Under-

21s to help the Whites top their group and set

up tonight’s last-32 tie against Huddersfield.

In League One, Collins scored a dramatic late

winner against Blackpool and then got the

goal in a 1-1 at Cambridge as Ian Evatt’s men

collected another point in their promotion push.

“I’m delighted to have won both of these awards

and would like to thank all the Wanderers’

fans who voted for me,” said Collins, who beat

Wycombe’s Beryly Lubala, Miles Leaburn of

Charlton Athletic and Rotherham’s Jordan

Hugill to win the Vertu Trophy Award.

“The group stage of the competition was excellent

for me and the team. The qualifying games gave us

a bit of momentum at times just when we needed it

and helped me get my goal count up and running.

Charlton will now visit Wanderers on Tuesday, 21st

January (KO 7.45pm).

A new date for the Whites’ trip to Bristol Rovers,

which was postponed last Saturday due to the

effects of Storm Darragh, is still be confirmed.

Tickets are on sale for Wanderers’ remaining

home League One games in 2024, including

‘Family Day’ against Lincoln City on Sunday, 29th

December.

Huddersfield are

taking part in the

Vertu (EFL) Trophy

for the first time

since the 2011/12

season after

dropping out of

the Championship

last season.

The Terriers had competed in the competition for

a decade before that and, previously, for a spell

between 1988/98 and 1994/95.

Their best run over both periods of taking part were

runs to the Northern Area Finals in 2001/02 and

2010/11.

In a knock-out version of the Trophy in 2001/02 the

Town side managed by Lou Macari got past Halifax

Town (on penalties), Wrexham, Scunthorpe and then

Hull City in the Northern Semi-Final.

That set up a two-legged area final against

Blackpool, who won the first leg 3-1 at Bloomfield

Road to put themselves in the driving seat.

Huddersfield attracted a crowd of over 7,500 for the

second leg at the then Galpharm Stadium for the

return and took the tie to extra-time.

Goals from Clyde Wijnhard and Schofield levelled

the aggregate scores but a goal from Martin Bullock

in the 103rd minute took the Seasiders to the Cardiff

Millenium Stadium where they beat Cambridge

United 4-1.

Almost a decade later, Town repeated the run with

another appearance in the Northern Final.

Lou Macari

This time, Lee Clark was at the helm and guided the

Terriers past Peterborough, Rotherham and then

Tranmere to book a semi-final clash with Carlisle

United.

Again, Town were away from home in the first leg and gave

themselves a mountain to climb with a 4-0 defeat at Brunton Park.

Another fightback at home raised hopes of a dramatic reversal

but a 3-0 win – thanks to goals from Alan Lee, two, and Anthony

Pilkington – wasn’t enough to stop the Cumbrians going to

Wembley and lifting the trophy for the second time.

A year later, Clark’s men made amends by going to Wembley

themselves to win the League One play-off final in a dramatic

penalty shoot-out to secure a place back in the Championship.

Huddersfield’s return to the competition this season saw them

drawn in Group F, along with Manchester United’s U21s and

Yorkshire rivals Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers.

Lee Clark

Michael Duff’s side made a losing start at Doncaster but a 2-0 win

over Duff’s former club, Barnsley, and a 4-1 victory over United’s

youngsters was enough to give them second spot and an away tie

in the last-32 tonight at League One rivals Wanderers.
