Water use warning after daily demand soars

comes as water use across the 

district spirals. 

In just the first few days of summer, 

the peak daily demand rose 

by about 10,000 cubic metres of 

water a day, an amount normally 

seen at the height of summer. 

The council said if people 

continue to use water at this rate, 

water restrictions could be introduced 

in the coming weeks. 

In the first week of December, 

peak daily demand increased from 

35,000 cubic metres a day the week 

before, to 44,000 cubic metres. 

Council executive director of 

infrastructure and property Tim 

Mason said peak time water use is 

the main problem. 

“While our on-demand networks 

are set up to handle normal 

increases in use at peak times, if 

lots of people turn on their hoses 

during peak times in the morning 

or evening (6am-9am and 

4pm-9pm) this causes difficulties 

for the network and can run 

reservoirs low or push us over the 

amount of water available.” 

Mason said people being mindful 

of their water use in recent 

years meant restrictions have not 

been needed. 

If restrictions were to come into 

effect, it would be a staged process. 

Each stage imposes stricter 

rules from banning the use of 

sprinklers to not watering at peak 

times and banning the watering

is a total ban on all external nonessential 

use of water.

SPORTS CLUBS are pleading 

for liquor licensing rules not to 

become stricter. 

As part of proposed changes to 

the district’s local alcohol policy, 

a duty manager would have to be 

present at all times when there 

are more than 20 patrons. 

Current rules say a duty 

manager does not need to be on 

site at sports clubs, but has to be 

on-call and available within half 

an hour. 

Most clubs use members who 

have their duty manager’s certificate 

to fulfil the requirement. But 

if the changes came into effect, 

some clubs may have to hire a 

duty manager at a large expense 

to them.

are much stricter.

requires multiple certificates 

and previous experience in the 

industry.

mad” and the current rules were 

working fine. 

Rolleston Rugby Club and 

West Melton Bowling Club said 

they already operate with a duty 

manager present at all times. 

The change would also affect 

the district’s ski fields. 

Like sports clubs, ski clubs also 

run tight budgets. 

“The duty manager is often 

also the ski area manager or a 

similar position, and they might 

be overseeing the bar but also 

attending to about 100 other jobs 

around the field,” Temple Basin 

said on Facebook. 

“This will be tough for Temple 

Basin to manage, and we think 

the other clubs will be in a similar 

situation of trying to make do 

with minimal labour.” 

Council head of regulatory Susan 

Atherton the duty manager’s 

role is to ensure the rules are 

being followed. 

“So the intention of this proposal 

is to make sure the person 

responsible is present when 

alcohol is served, and minimise 

alcohol harm.” 

Atherton said the council 

would take on the community’s 

feedback as part of its decision. 

“We would encourage everyone 

to have a look at what’s 

proposed and let us know their 

feedback.” 

Originally due to close today, 

the council has extended the 

period of consultation to 5pm 

December 31.

Statistics show district leading 

Selwyn is the fastest 

growing district in the 

country, its population 

increasing 29 per cent 

between Census nights 

in 2018 and 2023. But 

what else can the 

Census tell us? Reporter 

Daniel Alvey unpacks 

the data 

THE 78,144 PEOPLE who lived 

in Selwyn on Census night are 

earning more, are more educated, 

and are on average better off than 

the rest of the country. In June 

2024, the district’s population 

was estimated to have grown to 

85,600. 

The New Zealand index of 

socioeconomic deprivation was 

created by the University of Otago 

from census variables across eight 

dimensions: Communications, income, 

employment, qualifications, 

home ownership, support, living 

space and dwelling conditions. 

Deprivation means being in a 

state of disadvantage compared to 

the rest of society. 

On the social deprivation scale, 

which rates deprivation from one 

to 10 – one being least deprived 

and 10 being the most – 40.4 per 

cent of residents are in category 

one with 8.7 per cent above category 

five and none in nine or 10. 

GROWTH: Census data shows between 2018 and 2023, 3.2 

per cent of Selwyn’s population moved to the district from 

overseas. 

Compare Selwyn’s figures to the 

national average and it is doing 

much better. Across New Zealand 

9.7 per cent are in category one, 

and 50.8 per cent are above a five. 

In Selwyn, the average income 

is $51,900 – $10,400 more than the 

national average of $41,500. 

Compared to the national 

average of 54 per cent, 55 per cent 

of adults in Selwyn have a postschool 

qualification. 

The district has the second 

highest home ownership rate 

in the country at 80.5 per cent, 

compared to 66 per cent nationally. 

Waimakariri District has the 

highest rate at 82.2 per cent. 

Fewer people in Selwyn also 

smoke than in the rest of New 

Zealand with 7.7 per cent of 

people being regular smokers 

nationally compared to 4.7 per 

cent in Selwyn. 

Between 2018 and 2023, 78 

per cent of residents have stayed 

within the district, 3.6 per cent 

have moved from another district 

in the South Island and 11.6 per 

cent have moved from overseas or 

elsewhere in New Zealand. 

Between 2018 and 2023, the 

number of businesses have grown 

from 6750 to 8382. The top three 

industries for businesses in 

Selwyn are agriculture, farming 

and fishing (22.2 per cent), followed 

by rental, hiring and real 

estate services (19.2 per cent) and 

construction (13.8 per cent).

has failed in a bid to have the council 

overturn a parking ticket after his car was 

parked facing the wrong way in the culde-sac 

he lives in.

30 this year, the council issued 2070 

infringements totalling $199,528. 

It is a 1043 per cent increase from 

the previous 12 months, which saw 181 

infringement notices issued, for $13,700 

in fines. 

ATM fails again, despite 

bank’s promise to fix 

WESTPAC’S ATM in Lincoln is causing 

issues again – a week after the bank 

assured customers the problems had been 

fixed. 

On Friday, users found the ATM on 

Gerald St was not operating again, and 

over the weekend it would accept cards 

but when people tried to withdraw cash, 

it showed a ‘temporarily unavailable’ 

message. 

One person told Selwyn Times he had 

been to the ATM three times from morning 

to early afternoon on Sunday to get 

cash, with no success. He returned late 

afternoon and again withdrawals were 

‘temporarily unavailable’. 

“They (Westpac) clearly have a different 

opinion to most as to what temporarily 

unavailable is,” he said. 

It follows Westpac giving an assurance 

to Selwyn Times last week the ATM’s problems 

had been resolved after two weeks of 

intermittent issues. 

A Westpac spokesperson told Selwyn 

Times on Monday it was operational again. 

Westpac did not respond to questions 

about its previous assurance the ATM 

would be operational and fully-stocked for 

the Lincoln Christmas Parade and Market 

on Saturday.

FIRE CREWS are on edge as 

they prepare for what could be 

the driest summer in years. 

Following last year’s El Nino 

weather patterns and low rainfall 

winter, much of the district is 

now a tinder box. 

On Monday, firefighters 

were still working on 

three scrub fires across the 

district. 

A fire broke out had 

broken out on Sunday 

night in a forest next to 

the Waimakiriri River 

near West Melton, forcing 

50 nearby households to 

evacuate, along with people 

staying at a caravan park. 

With the support of four 

helicopters, firefighters were able 

to contain the blaze and allow 

people to return home. 

No homes were damaged, but

vegetation fires in Selwyn over 

the past week. 

It followed a 980ha fire at 

Bridge Hill near Castle Hill village

Rifle range noise row heading to court 


RESIDENTS fighting covenants 

being put on their properties 

due to a nearby army rifle range 

will have their case heard by the 

Environment Court in the new 

year. 

The hearing between West 

Melton residents and the New 

Zealand Defence Force will be 

held in February and follows 

mediation in May, in which an 

agreement could not be reached. 

The NZDF wants to put no 

noise complaint covenants on 

properties near its West Melton 

rifle range. Residents say this is a 

back door way for activity at the 

range to be increased without 

consequence. 

NZDF’s proposal was rejected in 

the council’s District Plan review, 

which led it to appeal the decision. 

The council is fighting its own 

battle to get the NZDF to develop 

a noise management plan for the 

range after an earlier attempt was 

rejected by then-Defence Minister 

Andrew Little. 

During mediation in May, the 

council and NZDF were able 

to agree on what a plan would 

look like, but could not agree on 

whether one should be in place. 

Because of the upcoming 

hearing, the parties involved could 

not comment about the mediation 

or the hearing. 

Due to the cross-over in both 

cases, the hearings will be held 

together from February 17-19.

Further talks needed 

on business park plan 

MORE MEDIATION is likely 

over a plan to develop a business 

park in Lincoln. 

Lynn and Carol Townsend, 

and Malcolm and Lynn Stewart 

want 27ha on Springs Rd, near 

the intersection of Tancreds 

Rd, to be rezoned from rural to 

industrial. 

The plan was declined as part 

of the council’s District Plan review 

in August last year, which 

led to an appeal to the Environment 

Court by the Townsends 

and Stewarts. 

Opposing the appeal are Jill 

Gordon and Ross Thomas. They 

are the Townsends neighbours 

and their property would be 

surrounded on three sides by 

the business park. 

Also opposing the plan are 

Barton Fields resident Jason 

Scott, AgResearch, Plant and 

Food Research, PGG Wrightson 

Seeds, and Fletcher Residential. 

As the council rejected the 

idea, it is also involved in 

proceedings. 

The first mediation was held 

a fortnight ago and involved all 

parties. 

IDEA: The rural land (purple) 

would be rezoned industrial 

to create a business park on 

the outskirts of Lincoln. 

Mediation is used to attempt 

to get the parties to agree to 

resolution before an issue potentially 

goes to a hearing in the 

Environment Court. 

The parties are unable to 

discuss publicly what happened 

at the first mediation, but

more mediation will be held to 

discuss the plan further.

Christmas cheer arrives in Selwyn 

Christmas has officially arrived in Selwyn, with 

Rolleston’s inaugural Christmas Parade on Sunday 

1 December. And with more Christmas events on 

their way throughout December, including the 

always popular Lincoln Christmas Parade and 

Market on Saturday 14 December, Selwyn is in for 

some joyous times! 

Did you know Lincoln’s first ever Christmas 

pageant took place in December of 1982? 

Much like the parades today, members of local 

community groups dressed up and paraded the 

streets with pipe bands, dancers and marching 

teams alongside decorated floats, fire engines, 

tractors, children on decorated bikes and 

Father Christmas. 

The Council took part in Rolleston’s Christmas 

Parade with Emergency Management volunteers 

and Stan the dog, promoting ‘Santa Gets Ready’, 

a campaign to educate Selwyn residents on 

emergency preparedness. Check out our Facebook 

page to see how Santa got ready for the parade. 

If you heard carols being sung in Foster Park on 

Saturday, you may have been listening to the 

Hope Presbyterian Church’s Selwyn Carols. 

And if you were wondering why High Street in 

Leeston was closed on Friday 6 December, it’s 

because everyone had to make way for Santa 

on his sleigh for Leeston’s annual Santa Parade. 

To make these events happen, there’s a lot of work 

put in behind the scenes. And sometimes even 

these community elves need a helping hand from 

the Council’s Selwyn Community Fund to bring 

the magic to life.

Council Services and Facilities Holiday Hours 

The Council’s Rolleston Offices will be closed from 

5pm Tuesday 24 December, reopening 8.30am 

Friday 3 January. 

Rubbish and recycling collections for Christmas Day 

and New Year’s Day (both falling on a Wednesday this 

year), will be the Saturday following (28 instead of 25 

December and 4 January instead of 1 January). 

Pines Resource Recovery Park will be closed 

Wednesday 25 December and 1 January. Standard 

opening hours operate for the rest of the holiday period 

(9am–4.30pm). 

All Selwyn Libraries and Service Centres are closed on 

Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 December, and 1 and 

2 January. They will reopen from 10am–4pm on Friday 

27 December, normal hours 28-31 December. In the new 

year, normal hours will resume from Friday 3 January. 

All Council-managed Community Centres are closed 

from 1pm on Tuesday 24 December, and will reopen on 

Monday 6 January. 

Selwyn Sports Centre will be closed 1pm Tuesday 24 

December, reopening with reduced hours from Friday 3 

January to Sunday 5 January. Normal hours resume from 

Monday 6 January. 

Selwyn Aquatic Centre will be closed Wednesday 25 

December, Thursday 26 December, Wednesday 1 January 

and Thursday 2 January. Reduced hours 24 December, 

6am-6pm and 31 December 8am-6pm. 

Darfield, Southbridge and Sheffield Community Pools 

will be closed Wednesday 25 December, Thursday 26 

December, and Wednesday 1 January. Sheffield Pool will 

also be closed on Thursday 2 January. Darfield Pool and 

Southbridge Pool closed 6pm on 24 and 31 December. 

Darfield Pool reduced hours 27 to 30 December, 3 to 5 

January, 11am–7pm. 

Animal Control Services are available, operating 24 

hours, 7 days a week. 

Building Inspections last day for booked building 

inspections will be Friday 20 December. Bookings will 

resume on Monday 6 January (under the Building Act the 

statutory clock stops on 20 December and restarts on 10 

January, meaning that those days don’t count as working 

days. Customers can continue to lodge applications 24/7

Resource consents no service between the close of

Duo make a splash 

with Aquabots win 


Rolleston friends Matthew 

Drury and Mitchell Venz have 

shown off their scientific skills on a 

national level. 

Matthew, 12, and Mitchell, 11, 

won the intermediate age category 

at the Aquabots nationals in Auckland 

l with their team the Jack O 

Lanterns. 

They were tasked with building 

an underwater remotely-operated 

vehicle to compete in practical and 

theoretical challenges. 

A second place at the regional 

competition earned the Kirkwood 

Intermediate pupils a place in the 

nationals, but their win almost 

didn’t happen. 

On the day of the final their 

propeller fell off, then the bot was 

deemed too big to compete. But, 

after a bit of glue, a borrowed hacksaw 

and some modifications they 

were ready to enter.

multiple challenges including 

underwater tree planting, lifting 

blocks from the bottom, pushing 

stop banks, and collecting balls 

from a pen. For the theory section, 

the team had to do a presentation, 

create a fact sheet, a technical 

report, and a quiz. 

The pair won in four categories, 

as well a second and third, securing 

enough points for the overall win.

About 25 years ago, Cab- 

4-Ewe was the brainchild of 

the late Geoff Warren as a way 

to promote Selwyn’s farming 

character. 

The stretched 1974 Volkswagen 

Golf MK 1, which had been 

parked up at for the last five 

years, was sold last week for $350 

in a TradeMe auction with proceeds 

to be donated to Ellesmere 

Lions. 

Warren died on November 30, 

aged 82. The family had listed the 

car for sale prior to his death. 

The hatchback was donated 

to Warren about 25 years ago. 

Before that, it had been used as a 

paddock racer. 

The Leeston resident cut the 

car in half and added an extra 

two-and-a-half metres of steel, 

making it about 6m long. 

The stretched car was then 

lined with plywood flooring, 

carpet, sheep netting, and a 

rustic picket gate for loading and 

unloading sheep. 

Warren and his wife Shirley’s 

pet sheep eagerly lined up to 

board, and the vehicle became 

something of an institution at 

many pet shows, Santa parades in 

Leeston, Lincoln, Ashburton and 

Christchurch, and even a VW 

national convention in Dunedin. 

The sheep stood on display at 

eye level for children and were 

known to nibble inquisitively on 

the driver’s ear. 

Cab-4-Ewe last saw service 

about five years ago in the 

Lincoln Santa Parade. 

The family are hoping the new 

owner restores the car for future 

generations.

annual Santa Parade.

a carriage pulled by

Opposition to 

liquor sales plan 

I absolutely oppose the 

suggestion to extend the hours 

of liquor stores (Selwyn Times, 

December 4). 

There are too many outlets for 

the sale of liquor, in most unsuitable 

areas and close to schools. 

Alcohol should not be sold in 

supermarkets either.

would support is 8pm, Monday to

I’ve been reading with interest 

Selwyn council’s response to the 

parking fines debate and I also 

think it’s a money grab. 

Some roads are so narrow that 

since the parking wardens are 

about, cars that previously parked 

slightly on the berms now park on 

the road, barely leaving room to get 

through. 

Also dog registrations have gone 

up 25 per cent this year. I wonder 

how they justify that? 

I don’t see any extra services so 

obviously another money grab.

Departing president reflects 

on years of rugby leadership

in rugby administration 

began as a way to 

support his boyhood 

club. More than 30 years 

later, after a long tenure 

leading Ellesmere 

Rugby, he’s stepping 

away from governance 

of the game. Sam 

Coughlan reports 

OUTGOING Ellesmere Rugby 

president Stuart Boon believes 

the sub union is in a positive 

place, despite dealing with the 

difficulties common to grassroots 

sport across the country. 

“There are issues around getting 

volunteers now, and financially it 

can be a bit of a strain at times,” 

he said. 

“Numbers-wise, it worries 

me. The number of teenagers 

not playing the game is a bit of a 

concern, but we actually picked up 

a bit last year, so that’s positive.” 

The Dunsandel and Ellesmere 

life member said the rugby landscape 

had changed a lot during his 

time as an administrator. 

“Certainly with the growth 

from when I started – the majority 

of teams were placed around 

small communities and in the last 

30 years, that’s changed with the 

population. 

“It’s how (Ellesmere) capture 

that going forward – so that 

there’s opportunities out there.” 

Boon, 65, started his administration 

career in the late 1980s 

while playing in Dunsandel’s 

division 1 side. 

A talented fullback and centre, 

he was always keen to do his part 

for the club and put his hand up 

to be president in 1989. 

“It was just a matter of helping 

out, I suppose,” Boon said. 

“Putting a bit back into rugby, 

trying to help the club and keep it 

going. It just went on from there 

really.” 

SERVICE: Stuart Boon’s tenure in rugby governance started 

in 1989, when he was president of the Dunsandel club. Now 

more than three decades on, he has finished up as president 

of Ellesmere Rugby.

He also played for Leeston and 

represented Canterbury Country 

before switching focus to the 

administration side of the game. 

Dunsandel was the first of many 

governance roles. 

Boon chaired Ellesmere’s 

judicial committee before being 

elected chair of the sub union 

nearly 20 years ago – a role he 

filled for seven years before 

becoming president in 2013. 

Boon also served as president 

of the Canterbury Country sub 

union and has been on the board 

at Canterbury Rugby, all timeconsuming 

roles. 

“Generally it’s not too bad. If 

something’s happening, you can 

get quite involved, but if things 

are ticking along nicely, it’s not 

such a problem,” he said. 

“With the chairmanship, 

you’re responsible for the overall 

running of the sub union, all the 

day-to-day stuff. 

“Then as president, it’s more of 

an overarching role, sitting in the 

background and helping where 

possible.” 

Away from rugby, Boon and 

wife Karolyn own a farm near 

Dunsandel which they work with 

sons Nick and Matt. Daughter 

Hannah is an early childcare 

teacher at Active Explorers 

Leeston. 

His decision to step away from 

Ellesmere Rugby was largely 

driven by a desire to spend more 

time on the farm with his family, 

especially his six grandchildren,

the oldest of whom is four. 

“I toyed with giving up last year, 

but stuck it for another year. With 

family and things, if there’s a 

clash, it can be a bit awkward. 

“I think it’s time for new faces 

and a change around. It’s time 

somebody else had a turn.” 

Boon believes Ellesmere’s new 

president, former chair Chris 

Thornley, will do a good job. 

“He’s stepping down from the 

chairmanship and has taken on 

the presidency, a bit like I did. 

“He’s been chairman for quite 

a while so he’s got quite a bit of 

knowledge and it’s still handy to 

have that involvement, so you can 

hand over to a new board and 

there’s a bit of continuity there.” 

Thornley’s replacement as chair 

will be confirmed at the next 

board meeting in February. 

Boon highlighted the 

connections he had made with 

people as the most enjoyable 

aspect of governance – and added 

he would recommend anyone take 

up a role. 

“It’s the people you meet, work 

with, get to know. That’s probably 

the most enjoyable part of it. 

“Just giving back to the 

sport, you get a lot out of it. 

I think sport’s an important 

part of developing kids, and 

it’s important to make sure it 

continues.”

Thornley’s move to the 

presidency is one of six changes

all nice, so I’ve got to focus on 

being friendly.”

Schoolboy star bound for Lincoln Uni

who took the Miles Toyota 

Premiership by storm will take 

his talents to Lincoln University 

in 2025. 

Former Nelson College first 

five-eighth and captain Harry 

Inch, who sports a mop of curly 

hair, was one of the country’s 

best schoolboy players this year. 

He led Nelson to win the Crusaders 

schools’ title, and 

to the final of the national first 

XV championships, where they 

lost to Hamilton Boys’ High 

School. 

Inch has been awarded Lincoln 

University’s $6000 rugby scholarship, 

dependent on passing 

his NCEA level three exams. If 

so, he will turn out for the club 

next year, as well as joining the 

Crusaders academy.

slotting a drop goal from more 

than 40 metres. 

Choat said Inch’s class would 

likely see him be involved in the 

division 1 team early – a rarity 

for a first-year student. Inch was 

likely to have had a lot of coaching 

behind the scenes already, 

so they wanted to continue to 

challenge him at Lincoln. 

“We want to try and get the 

best out of him and we want to 

challenge him and it’s the best 

way to grow as a rugby player.

Vegetables 

Watering and weeding are the 

principal tasks in the garden over 

the next two months. Hoeing, 

if carried out systematically, 

helps retain moisture, as well as 

destroy weeds and weed seeds, 

reducing hours of labour later. 

Water thoroughly, or not at 

all. Light sprinkling will bring 

roots close to the surface, where 

they dry out quickly in hot 

conditions. 

Peas and runner beans will 

need support. For peas, a piece 

of netting, with stakes driven 

through at intervals, is durable 

and will last for years. For 

runner beans, join three or 

four straight poles together in a 

teepee shape, then run twine or 

flax strips around at intervals to 

strengthen the teepee and give 

the growing beans something 

solid they can cling to. 

Cabbages and cauliflowers can 

be planted, as weather permits. 

Keep the soil around them moist 

until they settle in.

Flowers 

Spring-flowering anemones and 

ranunculus are usually bought 

as corms or claws but saved seed 

– it is not usually available in 

garden centres – can be sown in 

seed-raising mix until early next 

month. 

Dahlias can flower from 

January for months, until the frost 

knocks them back. Hoe carefully 

around dahlias and apply a top 

dressing of compost or well-rotted 

manure. Sturdy stakes can be 

inserted to provide support in 

the coming weeks but to avoid 

damage, should have been put 

in when the tubers were planted. 

Liquid manure will improve the 

size of dahlia blooms. 

Wallflowers and other bedding 

biennials may still be sown in rich 

soil. 

Delphiniums will be sending up 

strong, flowering spikes and will 

respond to weak liquid manure. 

Make your own by putting a small 

bag of animal manure in a bucket 

of water. Cover the bucket and 

leave for two weeks. To use, dilute 

the soup to the colour of straw, 

then apply around the base of 

plants every two to three days.

Chrysanthemums can be

superphosphate or general 

fertiliser worked lightly into the

Tomatoes must be regularly

copper oxychloride spray, 

followed by regular use of tomato 

spray. Avoid using any sprays in 

hot sunshine. 

Whitefly are a nuisance in 

the glasshouse. Keep them at 

bay by spraying with neem oil 

or planting marigolds (tagetes, 

not calendula).

Forester obvious backcountry choice 

NOW THE elder statesman 

of the Subaru NZ family, the 

passing years haven’t diminished 

the appeal of the latest 

generation of the Forester SUV, 

the perfect vehicle for active kiwi 

lifestyles. 

Versatility, practicality, advanced 

safety technology and 

its go-anywhere AWD provides 

owners with the peace-of-mind 

and confidence to explore out 

back and beyond. Now almost 

6-years-old it still remains 

a hugely capable and roomy 

SUV - it was good enough to 

win the 2018 NZ Motor Writers 

Guild car of the year award, 

with its already much-admired 

symmetrical AWD. A big safety 

game changer for this model 

back then was Subaru’s first-ever 

Driver Monitoring System. 

The system is pure genius 

with its ability to set the 

preferences of the driver around 

those small but important 

things, such as the position the 

wheel for seat position, door 

mirrors, air-conditioning and 

some instrument displays, 

by using facial recognition 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

technology. Within seconds of 

the driver getting behind the 

wheel, it recognises them and 

automatically adjusts to their 

preferences. The system can 

register up to five drivers and 

greets each of them, and has a 

Wandering Gaze Warning. If the 

driver continues to look away 

from the road ahead the system 

warns both passengers and the 

driver through a visual and 

audio alert. 

Its bag of tricks doesn’t end 

there. The system can also 

detect if the driver is getting 

drowsy. Again facial recognition 

technology fires off an audible 

warning to the driver in what 

could be a life saving call. 

Drowsiness is detected by 

calculating the time ratio the 

driver’s eyes are closed. Creating 

this innovative technology was 

a huge coup for Subaru and a 

precursor to how AI is making 

our vehicles safer. 

Like all vehicles the Forester 

has gone up in price. Even its 

most affordable iteration the 

Sport has raised by $7000 since 

2020. Next step up the model 

ladder is the $51,990 X-Sport 

with its distinctive orange 

exterior and cabin accents, 

making it the real standout in 

the range. Carrying the luxury 

model mantle and with ease is 

the Premium priced at $56,990. 

Hybrid options are offered from 

$52,490. For this road test, we 

checked out the price leading 

Sport, ahead of a larger and 

more sophisticated replacement 

arriving here in the first half of 

2025 (well after it debuted in the 

USA last November). 

If a long new vehicle warranty 

is important to you the Forester 

comes up short with a three-year 

unlimited warranty, leaving it 

languishing behind most of its 

competitors, where a five-year 

warranty is now the norm. 

Under the bonnet is a new but 

hardly groundbreaking normally 

aspirated 136kw 2.5-litre motor 

that continues to adopt Subaru’s 

signature horizontally opposed 

4-cylinder boxer engine layout. 

However, the new motor offers 

ample rather an abundance of 

performance. It doesn’t take long 

behind the wheel to appreciate 

what a smooth and refined 

motor it is, especially during 

open road driving. Engine noise 

is well muzzled, although it 

sounds thrashy when worked 

hard at higher revs, and is a 

motor that doesn’t really enjoy 

the driver bullying it past the

of old, this one is a major leap 

forward and is used on overseas 

markets where the next generation 

model is sold, where it has a 

maximum power output hovering 

around the 136kw mark. 

Subaru’s have earned plenty of 

accolades over the years for their 

exceptional low-speed pulling 

power, and this version is earning 

plenty more. It’s hard working 

work ethic in the lower rev is 

the key to delivering an effortless 

driving over hilly undulating 

roads, with brisk acceleration 

from standing starts. 

The motor drives through a 

proven Lineartronic Continuously 

Variable Transmission, 

isone of the best all-round CVTs 

in the mid-sized SUV class. 

Subarus have done a fine job 

refining this gearbox for over 15 

years, with each new iteration 

noticeably better than the one 

before. Unlike some CVTs, this 

one is smooth, responsive and 

doesn’t spiral off into aimless 

bouts of high revving. In fact, 

it’s so good that most the time 

it performs as well if not better 

than a conventional automatic. 

This Forester is the roomiest, 

most versatile yet, with 

impressive cabin comfort 

and extensive use of quality 

materials, while those getting in 

and out of the vehicle appreciate 

the wide door openings. A larger 

and wider cargo area add to 

the vehicle’s appeal and loadcarrying 

credentials. 

There’s plenty of evidence 

that cabin has been designed 

and equipped with driver and 

passengers in mind. A couple 

of ‘for instances’ are two rear 

fast-charging USB ports and a 

faster-operating, powered rear 

tail gate – almost twice as quick 

as the previous model. There is 

plenty of in-cabin convenience 

and entertainment in the form 

of Apple CarPlay and Google 

Android Auto connectivity. 

The suspension in unison with 

the symmetrical AWD offers 

confident and reassuring road 

hold on a raft of different road 

surfaces, typically in this neck 

of the motoring woods. With 

its balance, poise and agility the 

Forester is hard to ignore if you 

are in the market for an excellent 

all round mid-sized SUV, and 

thrives in our confronting

tends to become a bit fidgety over 

high frequency bumps opening
