Freedom at stake as Sarah
fights for affordable fares
• By Dylan Smits
SARAH KERR needs to take
the bus nearly everyday due
to cerebral palsy limiting her
mobility.
The $2 bus fare makes it an
accessible option and gives her
the freedom to go to work and
visit friends.
But cheap bus trips could
soon be at an end with Environment
Canterbury under
pressure from the Government
to raise fares – potentially
quadrupling the cost to $8.
The NZ Transport Agency
has asked local transport
authorities to increase fare
revenue funding for public
transport from 13.9 per cent to
28 per cent in the 2026-2027
financial year.
Kerr has started an online
petition asking for the fares to
remain at $2.
“It’s completely ridiculous.
You could be looking at about
$80 a week going towards
public transport. That’s a lot to
deal with and the implications
could be huge,” she said.
Kerr currently spends about
$10 a week on bus fares.
The 30-year-old is a wheelchair
user and cannot drive so
she uses her modest benefit to
pay fares.
For Kerr, an $8 bus fare
would be unaffordable, but she
is more concerned about how it
would affect others.
ACCESSIBLE: Sarah Kerr is calling on others to support her petition to maintain $2 bus fares.
“I live with my mum so I’m
lucky I don’t have to choose
between transport or my
next meal, or getting to an
appointment, but there are
many people out there where
that is the case.”
Kerr said she would lose
much of the independence
the cheap bus fares grant her,
and would need to rely on her
mother for car transport.
She is on a break from
work due to health issues, but
previously had a part-time
job at the Handmade Studio
in Riccarton where disabled
people weave garments for sale.
“I worry about how this will
affect my friends there.
“They might not be able to
go to work or get stuck in their
homes.
“It would be really bad for
mental health.”
Excavator
delayed
after gate
padlock
mystery
• By Daniel Alvey
POLICE ARE investigating
after a padlock and chain were
allegedly switched on a gate
which caused a delay in heavy
machinery reaching a large scrub
fire.
Protranz Earthmoving
provides Fire and Emergency
New Zealand with key
firefighting equipment such as
water tanks for helicopters and
earthmoving equipment.
Fenz called the company at
10pm on Sunday seeking an
excavator to help fight a large
scrub fire near West Melton,
which forced the evacuation of 50
properties and a caravan park.
But when a transporter
arrived to collect the excavator
from Protranz’s storage area at
Whiterock Quarry in Loburn,
North Canterbury, the lock and
chain on the gate had been cut
off and switched with a bigger
lock and chain, meaning the yard
could not be accessed.
The transporter then had to
travel to Castle Hill to collect
a different excavator which
was being used to fight a fire at
nearby Bridge Hill, adding about
100km to the trip.
Canterbury second in economic ranking
CANTERBURY has come
second in a quarterly economic
ranking of New
Zealand’s regions.
The ASB regional economic
scoreboard saw
Canterbury climb from
third to second place in
quarter.
Otago was first.
Cash coming at a cost as
private ATMs fill the gaps
• By Susan Edmunds
YOUR BANK might have
stopped offering an ATM in your
neighbourhood – but there’s a
good chance a private provider
has replaced it.
As the number of bank-run
ATMs shrinks – hundreds have
closed around the country in
recent years – they have been
replaced in many areas by those
provided by providers such as
Next or Allpoint.
Reserve Bank data shows in
2011 there were 2489 bank-owned
ATMs, but this dropped to 1440
last year.
But while most banks no longer
charge a fee for withdrawing cash
from another bank’s ATMs, the
privately-run machines often
charge about $2.50 or $3 for each
transaction.
Reserve Bank director of money
and cash Ian Woolford said the
move by banks to stop charging
the fee to other bank customers
had led to a reduction in ATM
numbers.
“There is a lot of change at the
moment as Allpoint, an NCR
subsidiary, takes over some bank
ATMs.”
Massey University banking
expert Claire Matthews said
people were using less cash, which
Nick Tuffley
regions, while in employment
Canterbury came fifth.
The ASB report
concluded these factors
led to growth in house
prices, where Canterbury
placed third by that
metric.
House sales also
continued to rise and
consumer confidence and
retail spending were up
compared to last quarter.
Said ASB Chief Economist
USER PAYS: Privately-owned ATMs generally charge customers between $2.50 and $3 for
every transaction.
PHOTO: GETTY
meant banks
saw less need to
provide ATMs
and could not
justify the cost.
“Private
providers see
a gap that is
profitable because
they charge a fee
– and I think they
Claire
Matthews
have a lower break-even threshold
as a result too.
“They can go anywhere,
whereas banks tend to prefer to
NZ FARMED ORGANIC HAM ON THE BONE
BRIDIE'S BAR
Nick Tuffley: “Canterbury
has had a strong finish to the
quarter and is one to continue
watching. In fact, this region
is one of the places to be with
population growth second only
to Auckland.”
Non-residential consents were
up 25 per cent in the year-onyear
third quarter.
The report said this was
mostly attributable to
continued rebuilding after
the earthquakes, particularly
have them at their own premises,
which gives greater convenience
for users. They then get used to
them in preference over bank
ATMs, contributing to the reduction
in bank ATMs.
“However, the fee can be seen
as a ‘tax’ on those on lower incomes
who may be more likely to
use cash,” Matthews said.
Next spokesman Wibo Basoma
said banks wanted to reduce
their costs, and turning to other
ATM providers was part of that.
“The cost of cash is increasing
commercial property in
Christchurch’s central city.
On the other hand, residential
consents across Canterbury
only marginally increased.
All top three regions were in
the South Island, with Southland
in third place in the overall
scoreboard.
The south is dealing with
economic shocks well compared
to the North Island, with
Auckland, for example, falling
from ninth to 14th.
non-stop. We provide an additional
service for a cardholder
to still access their banking
facilities.”
He said the ATMs were always
clear upfront about the charge
that might be associated with a
transaction.
“Out of that (charge), we
pay the switching fee, the
telecommunication fee, the cost
of the cash terminal. There are
multiple levels of costs – it’s a
user-pay scenario to really make
it work.” - RNZ
Dog perishes
in house fire
A blaze at a two-storey home claimed the life of a cherished family dog
and reduced the house to rubble. The fire, which started late Thursday
afternoon on Springston Rolleston Rd in Selwyn, happened while the
occupants were at a family dinner, and was called in by a passing Hato
Hone St John crew. It came as firefighting resources across the district
were stretched responding to multiple large scrub fires. The family, who
declined to talk to The Star, were distraught at the loss of their pet, but
thanked firefighters for their efforts. Lincoln fire chief Richie Bee said
the house had been burning for some time and collapsed within five
minutes of the firefighters arriving. While the house was a total loss,
firefighters were able to save a hot rod from an adjoining garage.
Alleged young
car thieves
reverse into
couple’s vehicle
Starnews.co.nz
A COUPLE following four
youths with hoodies and face
masks in a suspected stolen car
got a nasty surprise on Monday
night.
The Hornby couple called the
police and followed the car after
they saw the occupants “scoping”
out other vehicles, including their
own, about 9pm.
“We watched and they were
scoping cars and pulled in next
to mine. That’s when hubby ran
out and jumped in the car and
followed them.”
But when the youths saw they
were being followed, one of the
youths stopped the car in the
middle of the road and reversed
into the couple’s vehicle, causing
damage to their bumper and a
broken grille. One youth then got
out and threw an ignition lock at
them (top picture).
The woman said they weren’t
concerned for their safety at
the time but after posting their
dashcam footage online, others
said they had also run-ins
with the youths and had felt
threatened.
One person said the youths
lunged at her with a power drill
after she disturbed them trying
to steal her car. Others reported
being chased by the same group
of youths.
Others reported the youths had
tried to steal their cars but when
they couldn’t they ruined them
instead.
The couple reported the
incident to police.
“We were on phone to them
while following, apparently they
(the police) were only a block
behind when we were following.”
The couple continued to follow
the youths after the collision but
lost them when they ran a red
light and then “booted it up a
side street off Racecourse Rd”.
City going up: Key suburbs targeted
Housing intensification
could be coming to your
neighbourhood as the
city council approves
rules to make the
city grow up not out.
Reporter Dylan Smits
examines which suburbs
will be affected
THE MAJOR NEW rule changes
made last week aim to increase the
number and height of residential
and commercial buildings in
the central city and suburban
commercial centres.
The central city, Papanui and
Riccarton are in for the most dramatic
changes in building height.
Parts of Linwood, Hornby,
Shirley, Belfast, north Halswell,
Merivale, Sydenham, Church
Corner, and Merivale have also
been rezoned for high density
housing.
Plan Change 14 was required
under the Government’s national
policy statement on urban development
(NPS-UD).
High density residential areas
will mostly be near ‘town centre’
or ‘local centre’ areas such as Eastgate
or Merivale Mall respectively,
or in the central city residential
and mixed use zones.
The small town and local centre
zones will allow new commercial
BUILDING-UP: The city council has passed Plan Change 14, enabling significant housing and
commercial intensification in the central city and around shopping centres. The Riccarton
Mall and Northlands precincts directly adjacent to the malls will have a 32m or 10 storey
building height limit.
development in areas directly
adjacent to malls and shopping
centres.
Greater Ōtautahi, a housing and
public transport advocacy group,
believes PC14 will increase housing
supply and reduce prices.
“As with any good or service,
more supply lowers the cost
to buy or rent. More housing
means cheaper housing,” said
spokesperson Jack Gibbons.
In Hornby, residents association
chair Derek Phelps had
mixed feelings about the city
council decision.
The association has concerns
buildings higher than six storeys
could reduce house values for
current homeowners and put a
strain on transport and sewage
Politics, parenthood and the
By her own admission,
Nicola Grigg has had
a “busy” first year in
Government, mixing
electoral commitments
with ministerial duties
and raising her first
child. Daniel Alvey
catches up with the
Selwyn MP
SECOND TERM MP Nicola
Grigg and partner Phil
welcomed baby boy Geordie,
their first child, nearly a year ago
and have been perfecting the
balance since then.
“I’m learning to manage the
juggle as much as I humanly
can,” Grigg said.
Despite the workload, being
a mother has been an “absolute
delight”.
Along with her local duties,
Grigg is the Minister of State
for Trade, Minister for Women,
and Associate Minister of
Agriculture.
After Geordie was born, Grigg
took 10 weeks off from her constituent
work, staying at home
in Prebbleton. But after Prime
Minster Christopher Luxon
intervened, she took her whole
parental leave allocation.
“The Prime Minster wanted
AT WORK: Nicola and Geordie in her office at the Beehive.
me to take the full 26 weeks. I
was only going to take a couple
of months off, but he rang and
said ‘no, this is a really important
time and I want you to take the
full leave allocation’.”
Since returning to full-time
duties in June, Grigg said she has
relied on her support network to
balance work and life as a mum.
“We are really well supported.
We have a fantastic person who
takes care of Geordie. Sometimes
she travels with us to Wellington,
sometimes his dad comes up to
Wellington and other times I
leave him at home with his dad.”
She said the hardest times are
when she is travelling without
her son.
“They’re the hardest because
you don’t get to tuck him into
bed at night, but you just manage
it and babies are adaptable.”
OUT AND ABOUT: When not in Wellington, Nicola Grigg
spends time meeting constituents around the electorate.
Grigg, who was pregnant while
campaigning last year, said she
was nervous about making the
announcement.
“If I’m really honest, I was
probably a bit nervous about
making it public because it was
my first baby, and you never
quite know how it’s going to land
with the public.
“I was pleasantly surprised
with the enormous groundswell
of support I was given and probably
should have given people
the benefit of the doubt.”
In a unique coincidence, the
last National MP to have a baby
while in Government was Ruth
Richardson in 1983. She was also
the MP for Selwyn.
Grigg said being a mum has
added another string to her bow.
“Obviously until I became a
mum I didn’t understand the
maternal health sector as well
as I do now. I didn’t understand
early childhood care, I didn’t
understand Plunket. All those
things I now have an intimate
knowledge of.
Geordie is starting to making
his voice heard.
“He’s certainly far more popular
than I am when we walk into
a room.
“He’s just about one year
old now and he’s developing a
very loud voice and very strong
opinions,” Grigg joked.
With those strong opinions,
is there a future in politics for
Geordie?
pressures of life in Government
“I don’t know how his father
will feel about that. He will be
what he wants to be. Like my
parents – they had no expectation
of me to go into politics.”
Grigg’s family, who farm at Mt
Somers in the Ashburton District,
have political pedigree.
She is following in the footsteps
of her great-grandmother Mary
Grigg – National’s first female
MP who was elected to the Mid
Canterbury seat held by her
husband, Arthur, after he was
killed in Libya in 1941 during
World War 2.
She is also the great, great, great
SAD LOSS: The late Nikki
Kaye (left) was a great friend
to Nicola Grigg.
granddaughter of Sir John Hall,
once the premier of New Zealand,
and MP for Selwyn.
Grigg entered Parliament in
2020, taking over from Amy
Adams in what some say is the
safest blue seat in the country. She
was re-elected in 2023, receiving
31,504 votes, the most of any MP
in last year’s election.
She plans to run again in 2026
but does not consider Selwyn a
safe seat.
“It is an enormous privilege to
win this seat but you have to earn
it. You don’t just win it because
people traditionally vote blue. We
saw that in 2020 when it actually
swung left and Rolleston went 60
per cent Labour. Then I swung it
back in 2023.”
When Parliament is in session,
a typical week for Grigg involves
travelling to Wellington on
Tuesday morning and staying
until Thursday.
Mondays and Fridays are
spent either meeting people at
her Rolleston office or heading
out and about in the district, and
that’s before any travel for her
ministerial duties.
Nearly three weeks ago, Grigg
lost one of her best friends –
former National MP Nikki Kaye,
who passed away after her second
battle with cancer.
Kaye was 44, the same age as
Grigg.
LOCAL FOCUS: Since June, Nicola Grigg has brought six Government minsters to Selwyn
to show them the growth in the district and where it is projected to grow further.
“I knew her very well. We
were friends outside of politics
before I became a politician. She
was a great mate, a great New
Zealander.
“I had known her cancer had
come back this year, but I was
just shocked, like everyone,
shocked at how fast it took her
and I will miss her a lot.”
Grigg said Kaye had taught her
a lot about campaigning.
“She was world famous for her
fearsome campaign strategy.
“I recall a lot of conversations
about grassroots campaigning
and knocking on doors. She
knocked on thousands of
doors and now I’ve knocked on
thousands of doors.”
Now in Government, Grigg
believes an important part of her
role is to bring as many ministers
as she can to Selwyn to show
them how fast the district is
growing.
Growth in the district may
also see Grigg’s geographical
electorate shrink as its current
population is outside the
requirements set by the Electoral
Commission.
Selwyn currently falls well
outside the 5 per cent variance
The district is currently 14 per
to have a 21.3 per cent variance
with a predicted population of
Te Kaha roof over halfway
THE CONSTRUCTION of the
roof of the city’s new stadium has
passed the halfway mark.
A drone video, featuring commentary
from BESIX Watpac
project director Adrian Jones,
provides a close-up look at the
progress made to date on the
$683 million One New Zealand
Stadium.
Said Jones:
“The roof structure
has now
moved beyond
the halfway
mark.
“The roof
structure
is made up
of modular
Adrian
Jones
sections, which are being prefabricated
on-site, and installed
from the Tuam St end towards
Hereford St.
“Every three to four weeks,
you’ll see the next roof truss
progressing north.”
There are four roof trusses
each made up of three sections,
weighing about 160 tonnes a
piece.
The steelwork for the roof will
continue over the Christmas
holidays. The fourth and final
roof truss is expected to be installed
in early 2025.
“The last radial trusses will be
installed early next year, as the
roof builds out towards the north
stand,” said Jones.
He said 90 per cent of the
radial truss roof supports have
been installed, with the last few
expected to be in place by early
next year.
Jones said work on the final
grandstand – the northwest
stand – was completed about a
month ago.
The seats at the 36,000-capacity
stadium will go in from about
April.
In late November, the roof
cladding started to be installed
above the south stand that backs
onto Tuam St.
“The roof sheeting will now
progress around in both directions
toward Barbadoes St and
Madras St over the next six
months,” Jones said.
Steel cladding on the exterior
of the stadium started earlier this
month. The façade will feature a
pattern made up of 800m of steel
sheeting in colours representing
the Canterbury landscape.
Local visual artist and graphic
designer Morgan Darlison
developed the artwork for the
stadium.
The video also shows a bird’s
eye view of the west stand, which
contains the players’ facilities
and corporate boxes.
The project remains on budget
and on track to open in April
2026.
Canterbury charity seeks support
on eve of centenary
celebrations
A Canterbury children’s charity
is turning to the public for extra
financial support this Christmas.
Over the past 99 years
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre
provided respite care for more than
33,000 Canterbury children, over
300 children and their families a
year.
“Cholmondeley would not be
eyeing up its 100th year without
the ongoing support from the
Canterbury community, however,
it has been a difficult couple
of years for the charity sector,”
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre
General Manager Darel Hall said.
“Many charities are doing it tough and
we are no exception. Government agencies
only provide 20% of our funding and any
reductions impact the viability of our service,”
he explained.
Darel joined the centre as General Manager
in November following five years on its board,
but his connection to Cholmondeley goes back
nearly 50 years.
Darel Hall
“Almost half a century ago I
became a Cholmondeley child.
The experience at such an
important time as a child created
impressions that have shaped my
whole life,” he said.
From experiencing
Cholmondeley’s care first hand
to being part of the team that
delivers it, Darel wants to see the
Centre succeed for Canterbury
children.
“As Cholmondeley moves
towards its centenary in March
I want to thank the people,
volunteers, businesses, and
donors of Canterbury for their support for
Cholmondeley both this year and in the years
to come,” he said.
The funds Cholmondeley raises over the
Christmas period are critical to keeping the
Centre running throughout the year. Every
donation Cholmondeley receives goes directly
towards its operational costs, ensuring every
child who comes to stay can receive the best
structured respite they deserve.
End of an era: The Princess Margaret
Hospital closes its doors after 65yrs
THE PRINCESS Margaret
Hospital saw its last patients on
Friday after 65 years of providing
health services.
On Monday, the last child,
adolescent and family (CAF)
mental health outpatient team
moves to the new Kahurangi facility
near Hillmorton Hospital.
The new state-of-the-art youth
outpatient mental health facility
is better suited for the hospital’s
health teams.
CAF service manager Deborah
Selwood says it is the end of an
era.
“This was a very busy hospital
site through the years, but we
needed to move on to contemporary
surroundings. The results of
moving to Kahurangi are going
to be extraordinary.”
No decisions have been made
about the future of the hospital
site, which is owned by Health
New Zealand Te Whatu Ora.
Opened in 1959, the building
remains a dominant structure at
the foot of the Port Hills.
Originally a general hospital,
over the years it has been used in
many ways.
Most recently, it was a centre
for older persons’ health, rehabilitation
and specialist mental
health services.
It also hosted a Covid-19 testing
and vaccination clinic.
In the 1960s, the hospital’s
physiotherapy unit was a hive of
activity, with a respiratory unit,
a postural drainage room and
mini spa baths to help ease pain.
There was also an ultraviolet
room for skin conditions, and a
warm paraffin wax tub – which
arthritis patients would dip their
hands in to ease the pain.
It was once thought The Princess
Margaret would become
Christchurch’s main hospital,
but it was too far from the city
centre.
However, after the February
22, 2011 earthquake, its location
made it a lifeline as old wards
were reopened to receive patients
from Christchurch Hospital.
Casualties unable to make it
across town to Christchurch
Hospital went to The Princess
Margaret. Patients evacuated
from the badly damaged Riverside
block were taken there by
furniture trucks.
Said Health New Zealand
executive director of nursing,
Canterbury and West Coast
Becky Hickmott: “While TPMH
holds many special memories for
our staff and our community, the
complexity of redeveloping the
facility for contemporary healthcare
needs meant we needed a
new vision.
“We are so grateful for the
years of service our teams have
provided to our patients and our
community in this beautiful setting
during its lifespan of care.”
The final remaining
older persons’ health and
rehabilitation community
services teams plan to move to
Burwood Hospital next year,
following refurbishment of
workspace facilities. These teams
already work in the community
and do not see patients on site.
Janis Watson, physio aid in
the 1960s
“I know hospitals are like
communities in themselves
and TPMH certainly was.
Everybody who worked
there loved it, it was a nice
place to be, it had a good
atmosphere,” she said.
Watson’s memories were
so special, when she left,
she wrote on a whiteboard
in the corridor, “so long, it’s
been good to know you”.
“I have very fond memories
of living and working at
TPMH, visiting the cafe for
all my meals and sharing
really fun times with the
nurses living there.
“One memory I have was
running down the corridor
to the lounge and telling
people that the Berlin Wall
had come down. We were
glued to the news, watching
it happen,” she said.
“It was a fun place to live
and work, and I made some
really good friends there.”
Andrew Henderson, charge
nurse manager in 2012
Andrew worked supporting
post-surgical patients with
their rehabilitation needs.
“It had a real sense of
community and the wairua
could be felt wherever you
were in the building. It was
a privilege to be a part of
the history of TPMH, a wonderful
building and health
care system that’s extensive
history ranged from cardiac
theatre, psychogeriatric
in-patient wards, to the
older persons health and
rehabilitation service to
name a few. Long may she
be remembered.”
Catch some air at new skate park
THE WHEELS are turning at
Sumner’s skate park and village
green.
The outdoor space was
officially opened with a whenua
site blessing, workshops,
live music, a ribboncutting
ceremony and skate
demonstration.
Melu Blackburn was one of
many making the most of the
new facilities.
The skate park features a deep
pool bowl, a deep flow bowl
and a quarter pipe, while the
community green space has
picnic tables, barbecues and a
performance space with native
plantings.
Sumner Green and Skate chair
Charlie Hudson said it will be a
fantastic asset for Sumner, the
bays area and Christchurch.
“It is a testimony to the
collaboration of a dedicated
community, central and local
government, Christchurch
City Council and our local
community board,” Hudson said.
“Thousands of hours of work
behind the scenes will
now translate into thousands
of hours of skating fun and
communal activities on the
village green.”
City council community parks
manager Al Hardy said the skate
park has been a labour of love for
the Sumner community.
“This has been a long time
coming for the community and
we know this popular project has
been hugely anticipated.
“We’re excited to be
able to deliver this recreational
area and ‘hang out’ spot right
in the heart of Sumner – ready
in time to enjoy over the
Christmas period and summer
months.”
A Warm Summer
Christmas Greeting
to Our Friends in
the South Island
22
NEWS
He Ying
Consul General
of the People’s
Republic of
China in
Christchurch
Dear Friends,
How Time flies and Christmas is
awaiting us. Christmas in New
Zealand has a distinctive charm that
differs from that of the northern
hemisphere. It is a season of bright
sunshine, blooming flowers, and
charming scenery. I would like to
take this opportunity to wish you
and your family Merry Christmas.
The Christmas holiday marks the
end of the year. Compared with
other ordinary festivals, it provides
a unique opportunity to take a
break and reflect on the progress
we’ve made and the lessons we’ve
learned over the past year, and to
look forward to the new year with
hope and aspiration.
Although we are thousands of miles
away from each other, friendship
and cooperation between China and
New Zealand continue to grow. This
year marks the 10th anniversary
of the Comprehensive Strategic
Partnership between China and
New Zealand. As the Chinese
Consul General in Christchurch,
I am particularly heartened to
witness the deepening of the
friendship and cooperation between
our two countries in various sectors,
and extremely grateful for having
the opportunity to be part of this
lofty course.
On 15 November, Chinese President
Xi Jinping and New Zealand Prime
Minister Christopher Luxon met
in Lima, Peru. This meeting is of
great significance for the healthy
and stable development of future
friendly relations between our two
countries.
President Xi Jinping pointed out
that China and New Zealand are
both important members of the
Asia-Pacific region with strong
economic complementarities
and mutual benefit. China is
ready to work with New Zealand
to continue to carry forward
the spirit of “striving to be the
first”, and jointly build a bilateral
relationship featuring mutual
respect, inclusiveness, focusing
on cooperation and common
development, so as to contribute to
the development of both countries.
Prime Minister Luxon said that
China is a great nation. Bilateral
relations have developed well and
the bond between the two peoples
has grown very strong. New Zealand
is committed to continuously
deepening the comprehensive
strategic partnership with China,
firmly abiding by the one-China
policy, and is ready to maintain
high-level exchanges with China,
as well as to comprehensively
deepen cooperation in areas
such as economy and trade,
green development, and climate
change response. This productive
meeting between the two leaders
will undoubtedly inject new strong
impetus for China-New Zealand
cooperation.
In 2024, China has also steadily
progressed in its own high-quality
economic development, continuing
to be an important engine and
stabilizing force for the world
economy. We are confident that
China can achieve its economic
growth target of around 5 per
cent this year. We believe this is a
reasonable pace for a country with
a GDP close to US$18 trillion and
will still be one of the best among
the world’s major economies.
In July, the Communist Party
of China (CPC) held the Third
Plenary Session of the 20th Central
Committee. A number of important
decisions were made regarding
further deepening reforms
in a comprehensive manner
and advancement of Chinese
modernization, signaling that China
will continue to open up at a high
level.
China’s door of opening-up will
never be closed but only open
wider. I am happy to announce
that, starting from 30 November,
China will further adjust its
unilateral visa waiver policy for
New Zealand. Ordinary passport
holders of New Zealand travelling
to China for business, tourism,
family visit, transit and exchange
and visit purposes, and staying
not more than 30 days, can enter
China visa-free. We hope this policy
will further promote people-topeople
connection and cooperation
and exchanges between the two
countries.
Friendship between the peoples
holds the key to sound state to
state relationship. Many Kiwi friends
who had the opportunity to visit
China found that their experience
totally differed from what they
had previously learned about
the country through the media.
With the Christmas holiday just
around the corner, you and your
family are more than welcome to
take a trip to China to experience
the breathtaking natural beauty,
colourful culture, rich history and
vibrant development.
Dear friends, the development
of China-New Zealand relations
cannot be achieved without the
joint efforts of our two peoples.
I would like to express my special
thanks to our old and new friends
from all walks of life in the South
Island for your strong support for
our work over the past year.
We look forward to working hand
in hand with you in the new year to
foster a brighter future for China-
New Zealand relations.
Ferrymead’s stolen
Hilux found at
scrap yard
• By Geoff Sloan
FERRYMEAD Heritage Park has
welcomed the return of its Toyota Hilux
after it was stolen on Sunday, December 1.
Events manager Jack Fraser said the
1985 Hilux was driven through the park
gate by the thief as he made his escape.
“It’s caused considerable damage to the
gate”.
The incident happened about 7pm.
Fraser said the park’s workhorse was
mainly used by the property department
to transport heavy items, along with
gardening duties. Because it wasn’t used
on public roads it did not have any registration
plates.
The park reached out on social media
for sightings of the vehicle and driver.
However, Fraser said someone spotted it
at a scrap yard and alerted the park
Park’s Hilux, stolen from the
park, was found at a scrap
yard with the signage on the
doors painted over in black.
Inset – The Hilux before it
was stolen.
on Facebook.
The Hilux was recovered on Wednesday
last week and towed back to the park.
The Ferrymead Park signage had been
painted over in black on both doors.
Fraser said police were investigating the
theft. Parts from the vehicle were advertised
for sale on Facebook Marketplace
Fraser said the brazen theft left had left
park staff a bit shaken but it was great to
get a “valued member of the team” back.
Ferrymead Heritage Park management
will be assessing the damage to the ute and
working with their insurance company to
get the vehicle back up-and-running.
The Toyota Hilux was recently named
as the most stolen car in New Zealand,
according to finance firm MoneyHub.
Over the six-month period between May 1
and October 31, 171 Hilux utes were stolen
around the country.
Get revved up for the George Begg
Festival in April 2025
Pull out your retro threads and get ready to be transported back to the golden era of kiwi motorsport racing.
George Begg Festival 2025 will
bring the party vibes of the 1960s
and 1970s to Invercargill for four
fantastic days from April 10 – April
13.
With action-packed racing and plenty of
off-track entertainment, our retro motorsport
event in Invercargill is racing like the good old
days—but better.
In 2025, we’re turning up the heat with an
Italian theme, celebrating the legendary
motorsport culture of Italy.
See iconic brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini,
Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat both on and off
the track.
First held in 2023, the George Begg Festival
celebrates all the good parts of motorsport
racing, while paying tribute to homegrown
Southland motorsport legend George Begg.
Once compared to Italian Enzo Ferrari, this
year’s Italian theme could not be more fitting.
Begg built 18 racecars between 1965 and
1974 at his ‘Toyshop’ in rural Southland. They
competed with, and beat, some of the biggest
names in motorsport.
Alongside the Italian contingent, the festival
named in his honour will also bring many
other classic cars and some of the country’s
most renowned drivers to Invercargill.
First to be confirmed was Dunedin rallying
legend Emma Gilmour - the first-ever woman
driver for McLaren Racing. She can’t wait to get
back south for her first festival, saying “I love
coming down and competing”.
One of the biggest names in modern-day
motorsport in New Zealand is also back for the
George Begg Festival 2025.
Four-time Bathurst 1000 champion Greg
Murphy is taking to the track again at next
year’s festival, relishing the chance to be part of
the event again after first attending in 2023.
Also looking forward to their first George Begg
Festival are Australian heritage racers Rick
Allen and Meon Nehrybecki.
Rick is bringing the BMW E30 M3 that he’s
owned since 1998, while Meon will have his
1991 Mercedes Benz Sonax 190E 2.5 16v DTM,
of which only 17 were made.
“It’ll be quite a crowd-pleaser,” he said. “I’d
always had some aspirations to do some
international racing.”
And there are still many more star drivers to be
announced.
Among the programme of track events,
there are Historic Touring Cars (1982-2000),
Formula 5000, Historic GT, Pre-1978 Classic
Saloons, Vintage Racing Cars, and Modern
Touring Cars (post-2000).
In addition to the classic Italian cars, legendary
Italian bikes from Ducati, Moto Guzzi,
Bimota, and more will be tearing up the track
in demonstrations on both the Saturday and
Sunday.
While the main base will be the legendary
Teretonga Park Raceway, some events will be
held at venues around Invercargill.
Off the track, events include The Rev Up - an
exclusive celebration of George Begg, to be
held in the George Begg Bunker at the Classic
Motorcycle Mecca.
Friday night sees Bill Richardson Transport
World transformed for A Night at the Opera
with Queen, held in Bill’s Shed, featuring
Queen’s iconic greatest hits.
Time is ticking to secure your tickets for what is
a must-do on any motorsport fan’s calendar.
Tickets for the George Begg Festival are now
available from www.georgebeggfestival.nz/
and budgets.
RESIDENTS fighting covenants being put
on their properties due to a nearby army
rifle range will have their case heard by
the Environment Court in the new year.
The hearing between West Melton
residents and the New Zealand Defence
Force will be held in February and follows
mediation in May, in which an agreement
could not be reached.
The NZDF wants to put no noise
complaint covenants on properties near
its West Melton rifle range. Residents
say this is a back door way for activity
at the range to be increased without
consequence.
NZDF’s proposal was rejected in
Selwyn District Council’s District Plan
review, which led it to appeal the decision.
The district council is fighting its own
battle to get the NZDF to develop a noise
management plan for the range after
an earlier attempt was rejected by then-
Defence Minister Andrew Little.
During mediation in May, the district
council and NZDF were able to agree on
what a plan would look like, but could not
agree on whether one should be in place.
Because of the upcoming hearing, the
parties involved could not comment
about the mediation or the hearing.
Due to the cross-over in both cases,
the hearings will be held together from
February 17-19.
Could Hanmer Springs be the
next boom town for retirees?
• By David Hill
HANMER SPRINGS is growing
as more people choose to retire
in the alpine village.
Local cafe owner and Hanmer
Springs Community Board
chairperson Mary Holloway said
the village is booming, with new
sub-divisions being built.
The village has a permanent
population of around 700 people,
plus holiday homes, but it can
swell up to 10,000 people during
busy weekends.
‘’People want
to come here for
a bit of peace
and quiet,’’ Holloway
said.
‘’Hanmer has
always been a
tourism town,
but we still have
that connection
with the rural
Mary
Holloway
sector, and we still have that village
feel.’’
Most visitors come from
Christchurch and other cities
around New Zealand, with
international visitors starting to
return after Covid.
The challenge is providing
the services needed to support
the large influx of visitors and a
growing older population from
a small ratepayer base, Holloway
said.
It means the community needs
to provide for its own services,
such as the Hurunui District
Council-owned Hanmer Springs
Medical Centre and doctor’s
house.
The medical centre was loan
funded, and the community
board is planning to have the
loan paid off in the 2027/28
financial year.
Hurunui district councillor
Tom Davies said Hanmer is an
attractive place
to retire to with
its “beautiful climate’’
and houses
are still marginally
Staff conducted a survey of
residents across the district aged
Housing and access to health
Most respondents said their
housing met their present needs,
but others cited a lack of services,
poor insulation and the potential
of becoming lonely.
Nearly one-third of
respondents indicated they were
larger population centres like
Rangiora or Christchurch, where
they could better access health
care.
Increasing bus fares a backwards step
I have read about the proposal
to increase bus fares over the past
week or so. I use the bus every
few weeks, generally to travel to
the library in the CBD.
While not an extensive user
of public transport, the bus is
convenient and to catch the bus
is local to where I live.
Will the fare increase mean I
don’t take the bus to town? Most
likely no. I will travel less often.
I can, however, imagine that
anyone who does regularly use
the bus will seriously reconsider
if a trip is necessary.
With the current cost of living
crisis, this will just add to
the perception that prices are
increasing. For a user who travels
to work by bus the cost will increase
from $20 to $80 per week
(assuming 10 trips per week and
if the full proposal is adopted).
People should be encouraged
to take the bus as a means of getting
cars off the road.
Additionally, what social
benefits does the ability to take a
reasonably cheap and timely bus
service provide for those who
can’t afford a car or its operating
costs?
They say there is an epidemic
of loneliness in our society but
access to a cheap bus service may
encourage people to visit friends
and family and visit parks, all
for the benefit of their mental
health.
NO GOOD: Increasing bus fares will disadvantage users and is counter-productive, readers
say. They also say it is environmentally unfriendly.
PHOTO: ECAN
The question I have is has the
social cost been considered in
the proposal or just blind ideology
(which seams all the rage
these days).
And how will this proposal affect
patronage of the various bus
services in the city – a drop in
patronage may result in fewer
services.
From what I have read, it is
unclear if any work has been
done on the social cost for the
proposal. Before that work has
done the proposal shouldn’t even
be considered.
- Edmund Good
Thank you so much for the
reporting on the possible bus
fare rise. This is outrageous and
another example of this Government’s
(NZ Transport) attitude
and constant attempts to make
daily living as hard and stressful
as possible for people who struggle
to survive and manage every
day.
I, and many others, can only
travel due to Environment Canterbury
making travel accessible
(financial, safety, and destination
suitable) for us all, and I thank
them most sincerely for this. Any
increase would be detrimental
and short-sighted if they want
people on public transport.
- Kelly Casey
I work with, and know people
on benefits, who will find the
hike in bus fares catastrophic.
People who don’t have cars and
use the bus for shopping, doctors,
social, attending groups and
appointments, will not be able to
sustain this increase.
This will not save money in
the long-term as other organisations
will need to help more, and
the impact on people’s physical
and mental health will cost the
country.
I use the bus when going to a
hospital appointment or event in
town. It saves paying for parking.
Will the next headline say parking
fees to increase four-fold?
This also goes against what we
want to be doing environmentally,
using more public transport
– for $16, I’ll be taking my car.
Fewer people will then be using
the public transport and that will
create the next problems. Some
increase is expected, but this is
too much.
- Angela Ryken
I do not agree with an $8 bus
fare for people. We should be
encouraging more bus users, but
this won’t do it. It will have the
opposite effect.
- Marie Roberts
Cat lady murder
Robin Thomson’s anger and
grief about her murdered friend
Sweet treats for summer
Celebrate the arrival
of delectable summer
fruits with a little TLC
to ensure a successful
harvest season, writes
Rachel Vogan
SUMMER FRUIT always seem
like a gift from the gods to me.
This month berries are in full
swing, cherries are abundant
and early season plums and
apricots are starting to ripen.
Grapevines are starting to
trail and passionfruit are slowly
starting to fatten up. Other
fruits like citrus and feijoas are
in flower and setting fruit for
next season.
Cherries
Warm, sun-ripened cherries
are just delicious. Once picked,
cherries do not ripen a lot, so
ensure they are as ripe as possible
before harvesting. If possible,
leave the stalks on the fruit,
as this helps extend its shelf
life. And don’t be picky when
it comes to harvesting cherries
that are less than perfect. Split
cherries taste just as good as
unblemished ones.
Passionfruit
Fruit will be plumping up
over the summer months.
Although a vine can go several
weeks without water, the plants
produce better fruit when
regularly watered. Whitefly and
passionvine hoppers are insects
to watch out for. Deal to them as
soon as you spot them.
Feijoas
Flowers will be covering plants
this month, making them look
festive with their red and white
blooms. It is too late to prune now,
as you risk cutting off next year’s
fruit. Watering is key for younger
trees or in very dry areas. Where
possible, aim for half a bucket of
water per plant, once a week.
Grapes
Vines will be vigorously growing
now. As the stems grow, tie
them up or tuck them behind
wires to prevent them from snapping
in the wind. Grape stems can
be thinned out to reduce the overall
size of the plant. Prune out any
that have no bunches of flowers or
small clusters of fruit.
Citrus
Flowers will be turning into
small fruit on many varieties of
citrus. Many trees will still be
holding onto last season’s fruit as
well – citrus is just so generous!
Keep an eye out for sooty mould.
This black, powdery plague can
quickly take over plants. Use a
natural-based spray to control
it. Yates Nature’s Way Organic
Citrus, Vegie & Ornamental Spray
is a good one to look out for.
Deep and regular watering is
important too, especially for citrus
growing in pots and containers.
It’s also a good time to add
mulch around the root zone to
protect the plants’ shallow root
system. Apply citrus fertiliser if
you didn’t do this in spring.
Regular watering is vital for
plants to produce juicy berries.
Strawberries
Along with keeping plants well
watered, remove any old and tatty
leaves and pick fruit within a few
days of it ripening.
An application of strawberry
food will give the plants a boost.
Freshen up straw as required and
keep beds weed free.
Raspberries
Stake floppy stems to keep
developing fruit up off the
ground. It pays to cover the
raspberry crop with nets to keep
the greedy birds away from the
ripening fruit. Remove suckers
from the base of plants.
Blueberries
Fruit will be ripening now.
Leave the berries to fully ripen
on the plants, as they tend not to
ripen any further after they have
been picked. Blueberries are acidloving
plants, so feed them with
an acid-based fertiliser and avoid
using strawberry food on them.
Schoolboy star bound for Lincoln Uni
• By Sam Coughlan
THE MAN with the mullet
who took the Miles Toyota
Premiership by storm is poised
to take his talents to Lincoln
University in 2025.
Former Nelson College first
five-eighth and captain Harry
Inch, who sports a mop of curly
hair, was one of the country’s
best schoolboy players this year.
He led Nelson to win the Crusaders
schools’ title, and
to the final of the national first
XV championships, where they
lost to Hamilton Boys’ High
School.
Inch has been
awarded Lincoln
University’s
$6000 rugby
scholarship,
dependent on
passing his
NCEA level
three exams. If
so, he will turn
out for the club
next year, as well as joining the
Crusaders academy.
Lincoln University strength
and conditioning coach Jarrad
Choat said the club was looking
forward to having Inch on board.
“He is an exciting prospect.
For him to come here and learn
and grow off other players,
hopefully that will allow him to
become a better player himself
and also help those players
around him here.”
Inch received the Philip
McDonald Memorial Award as
the most valuable player in the
schools’ competition. He also
turned out for NZ Schoolboys
against Australia, NZ Māori and
Samoa.
Nelson also beat Christ’s
College in the final of the
quadrangular tournament, Inch
slotting a drop goal from more
than 40 metres.
Choat said Inch’s class would
likely see him be involved in the
division 1 team next year – a
Riccarton eye Hagley Oval return
• By Sam Coughlan
RICCARTON are hoping for
a Hagley Oval homecoming
should they make the finals of the
premier T20 competition.
One semi-final and the final of
the competition will be played at
Hagley Oval on Sunday. The final
will be held under lights – the first
club game to do so.
Riccarton was forced to play
at Upper Riccarton Domain
when Hagley Oval became
Christchurch’s premier
international cricket ground after
the earthquakes. However, their
clubrooms remain at the ground.
If they qualify fourth for the
finals, Riccarton will play their
first game at the ground since
2017.
Coach Darrin Entwistle said a
homecoming would be welcomed
by the club.
“Our home ground has always
been Hagley Oval, with the clubrooms
still there, so to be able to
play there would be fantastic.”
With two rounds remaining,
both to be played on Saturday,
Riccarton are currently fourth –
occupying the last semi-final spot.
They play Heathcote and Lancaster
Park knowing two wins,
or just a win over closest rivals
Lancaster Park, would see them
into the semis.
Entwistle said it was the next
step towards their eventual goal of
winning the title – just a year after
being promoted from the secondtier
championship.
“We’re out to win both of
those (games). If we can make a
semi-final, we’re on our way to
achieving one of our goals. It’s a
Alpiners
• By Sam Coughlan
THE ALPINERS hockey team
have sewn up a successful maiden
premier hockey league season
by winning the men’s final in
Auckland on Saturday.
The South Island side prevailed
7-4 over the lower North Islandbased
Falcons in the final, a
stirring comeback from 4-2 down
just after halftime.
Head coach Aaron Ford said
even though
his side were
favourites, he was
happy with how
they managed the
expectation.
“It’s a good
feeling, that’s for
sure,” he said.
“We had a good
team, so there was
Aaron
Ford
a lot of pressure on us to perform
and win the thing. It was good to
live up to expectations and play
some good hockey throughout the
league.”
Striker and captain, Black Stick
Sam Lane, was the top goal-scorer
“It was fantastic we had Sam
come in, lead our team and score
some goals.”
The women’s competition was
won by the Falcons, while the
Alpiners finished third, beating
the Mavericks 6-1 in the bronze
final.

Shooting for global esports glory
In the digital age, the
field or court is not the
only place to compete.
Esports, or competitive
gaming, is growing
passion for many in the
city as new funding
and play spaces get the
go ahead. Dylan Smits
reports
SOLOMONA Faitaua-Nanai
played centre in basketball during
high school.
He never dreamed of becoming
a professional basketballer.
But six years later he is on the
international stage at centre again
– not on the actual court but in
the booming world of esports.
Today, the 24-year-old is in the
Philippines as part of the E Blacks,
New Zealand’s national esports
team, competing against teams
from around the globe in the basketball
simulator game NBA 2K.
The eFIBA World Finals will see
eight teams battle for a US$40,000
(NZ$68,000) prize pool with the
world champion team taking
home NZ$34,000.
“We’re pretty pumped up for it.
It’s going to be very competitive,
but I think we will do well,” said
Faitaua-Nanai.
After winning the APAC
tournament in the Philippines last
year, his skills were noticed and he
was drafted into the Pistons GT
team competing in the international
NBA 2K League.
The team is the esports offshoot
of the on-court Detroit Pistons
NBA side.
“It’s pretty wild. I literally went
from just mucking around with
my mates to living in America
playing 2K.”
While living in Detroit, he
played about five hours a day for
practice and competed against the
world’s best NBA 2K players.
“It was a good time, but there
were challenges. It was impressive
seeing how much time and
effort people put in compared to
how much I play at home,” said
Faitaua-Nanai.
He earned NZ$80,000, his
biggest payday ever, making it
to the semi-finals before being
eliminated.
BISHOPDALE go into the
Christmas break in the
premier men’s tennis interclub
competition full of confidence
after securing a close encounter
against Elmwood at the
weekend.
The match was drawn three
matches all, with Bishopdale
clinching the tie after their top
doubles combination won a valuable
additional set on countback.
Competition leaders Cashmere
remain unbeaten, hardly raising
a sweat against opponents
“It was very good pay for just
four months. Getting that for
playing 2K feels pretty validating,”
said Faitaua-Nanai.
But that has not been the norm.
He has earned about $5000 a year
since he started competing in
higher level tournaments five years
ago – so he still needs a day job.
Faitaua-Nanai is a youth worker
at Te Poutama Ārahi Rangatahi in
Templeton, a residential therapy
programme for at-risk boys.
“I work around kids and teenagers
all day. You can see growth in
Boost for Bishopdale going into the break
Edgeware, who defaulted two
of their matches. Meanwhile,
Burnside Park continued their
strong showing after beating
a spirited Te Kura Hagley 4-2,
with club coach Remi Feneon in
devastating form in his 6-0 6-0
win.
In the women’s competition,
Elmwood continued their
unbeaten record and were too
strong for Te Kura Hagley.
Louise Oxnevad, now based in
Queenstown, made her season
debut for Elmwood with a dominant
showing against Te Kura
Hagley’s Wonjeong Kim. Adele
them from putting a little more
effort in to things. I like to do
that myself for esports too,” said
Faitaua-Nanai.
He started playing basketball at
Christchurch Boy’s High School,
and later Shirley Boy’s High School
in year 12 and 13.
He started competing in virtual
basketball tournaments in 2019,
steadily making his way up the
ladder with his team No Way Out.
Multiplayer competitions
have long been a part of gaming
culture, but were largely between
amateurs until the creation of
online streaming platforms such
as Youtube and Twitch.
SUCCESS: Faitaua-Nanai with the Pistons GT team competing
in the NBA 2K American league. He lived in Detroit for four
months this year practicing for and playing in the tournament.
DEDICATION: It has taken five years of competing, but
Solomona Faitaua-Nanai is now the captain of the NBA 2K
division of the E Blacks. The national team is competing in the
eFIBA World Finals in the Philippines this week.
Orangi, looking to bring up her
100 wins in premier interclub,
scored Te Kura Hagley’s only
win.
Bishopdale beat Shirley by
a similar margin, with Jade
Feneon again filling the top slot
for Bishopdale with regular No
1 Aliyah Daly competing in the
national junior championships
in Auckland. Daly and her partner
Emme Gale won the national
14 and under girls’ doubles title.
Waimairi’s No 1 Charlie
Byers, who has been busy with
tournament and Auckland
Caro Bowl competition, made
The global esports audience
reached 921 million viewers in
2022.
Faitaua-Nanai said it’s an honour
to represent New Zealand
and captain the NBA 2K division
of the E Blacks.
“A lot of people think it’s not
really a national sports team
because it’s a game, but you’re
still competing at the highest
level with New Zealand on your
uniform,” he said.
Faitaua-Nana said good communication
and teamwork are
the most important factors for a
successful esports team.”
“You have to constantly say
what you’re thinking and doing,
but also not talk over each
other.”
In the long term, Faitaua-
Nanai aspires to work full-time
competing in esports but will
likely pursue teaching it to guarantee
a more stable income.
“I think a lot of parents think
gaming is a waste of time, but
even though it takes a lot of
work and can be tough, it is a
possible career for some people.”
Although some players can
make money out of esports,
most compete casually.
The amateur esports scene in
Christchurch has undergone a
dramatic transformation in the
last four years with a greater
a welcome and timely return to
her club team and helped them
win 4-2 against Cashmere. The
two teams were locked on equal
points, but Waimairi gave their
semi-final chances a boost with
the win, earning them a ninepoint
margin on the competition
table.
Players will now switch their
focus from club competition to
tournaments during the summer
interclub break.
Wilding Park will host
the Canterbury Open from
December 20-22, while Te Kura
Hagley is celebrating the 50th
Popular Esports games
The esports games taking
gamers by storm are a
mix of strategy, first person
shooter and more casual
experiences.
• League of Legends,
a strategy-based,
multiplayer online
battle arena (MOBA),
and Valorant, a teambased
first-person hero
shooter, are more popular
among older teenagers
and adults.
• Minecraft and Rocket
League are more childfriendly
games, but are
popular across generations
of esports players.
focus on accessibility and inperson
events for young people.
Esports Ōtautahi and the
Canterbury University Gaming
Guild are the top two facilitators
of casual tournaments in the
city.
Danny McNeil, Christchurch
City Libraries learning specialist,
has been instrumental in
setting up four esports hubs for
players to compete in.
The Upper Riccarton Library,
Te Hāpua Halswell Centre and
Matatiki Hornby Centre all have
hubs.
“When you’re watching the
players, you
start to realise
‘wow they’re
really a proper
sports team’. We
wanted to create
an accessible
space where
kinds could
come out of
their bedrooms
and compete,” said McNeil.
Danny
McNeil
The libraries’ high-end computers,
provided by retailer PB
Tech, can run esports games.
This lets many high school
age players access the world of
esports for the first time.
McNeil also co-founded
Esports Ōtautahi, a collaboration
between city libraries, PB
Tech, other businesses, and high
schools which aims to create a
thriving esports community in
Christchurch.
Larger Jimny does best work off-road
A ROOMIER and more practical
version of Suzuki’s diminutive
3-door Jimny, the 5-door variant
is key to taking already buoyant
global sales to the next level.
The 5-door Jimny will have
wider appeal than its 3-door
sibling. However, a potential
barrier to achieving its sales
potential is the steep $5k
premium.
The 5-door 5-speed manual
being road tested here sells for
$40,990, with a sizeable $3k hike
to the automatic. It comes with
an optional $500 black roof that
adds a bit of visual edge, and
an extra worth considering.
A 5-speed manual gearbox
accounts for about 40 per cent of
Jimny sales.
While the width and height
of the 5-door remains the same
as the 3-door, the overall length
extends 340mm to provide a still
compact 3820mm body length
or 3985mm including the full
size rear-mounted spare wheel.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
At the same time the longer
2590mm wheelbase compares
with 2250mm for the 3-door.
The rear seats benefit from
increased thickness and added
width, while the luggage area
more than doubles to 211L with
the rear seats raised. They can
also be locked in two reclining
positions for improved comfort.
The load area capacity increases
to 332L with the rear seats folded
and the convenience is further
improved by the large sideopening
rear door.
Contrasting with the black
finish grille on the Jimny 3-door,
the 5-door boasts a chrome
and dark grey grille, while
the extended body retains the
distinctive styling cues of its
shorter sibling.
The boxy lines and upright
A-pillars increases the driver’s
field of vision and reduces blind
spots. A flat, square clamshell
bonnet shape allows the body
guards to be visible right to the
front edges of the vehicle.
All Jimny models are parttime
4WD drive and the
Suzuki AllGrip Pro system
with its low range transfer case
allows high and low final drive
ratios, depending on the road
conditions or the terrain. The
driver can simply select 2WD,
4WD or 4WD low lock when the
going gets really rough.
Hill descent control limits the
vehicle to 5km/h in low range,
braking individual wheels for
controlled descending. Hill
hold control helps prevent the
vehicle rolling backwards, so the
driver can focus on controlling
acceleration.
It weighs 105kg more than
the 3-door but still clocks in at
a trim 1200kg. The 5-door has a
relatively tight turning circle of
11.4m to extricate from tricky off
road situations. A recirculating
ball steering system is well suited
for all-terrain duty.
The warranty isn’t anything
special. It has been extended to 5
years, the distance unchanged at
100,000km. This is one of poorer
warranties in our new vehicle
market, where 5-year 150,000km
warranties are the norm.
The width and height of the
5-door is identical to the 3-door.
Rating out of 10: Performance 5; Handling 6; Build Quality
6; Comfort 6; Space 7; Styling 8; Fuel Economy, road test
average consumption 7.5. L/100km; Value for money 6;
Safety, ANCAP 3-star crash test rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
The most telling measurement is
the 340mm increase in length, to
provide a still compact 3820mm
body length or 3985mm
including the full size rearmounted
spare wheel. A longer
2590mm wheelbase easily shades
the modest 2250mm you get
with the 3-door.
Sedate performance is the
order of the day from an
underwhelming and aging 75kw
power plant with a 130nm of
torque at a busy f4,100rpm.
Just a short stay behind the
wheel over undulating and
hilly terrain and you quickly
learn the motor does its best
work at 4000rpm plus revs. This
made the test vehicle noisy and
tiresome on longer road trips
and languishing behind most of
its rivals for refinement. To its
credit, the vehicle maintained a
solid 100km/h pace on the open
road, but always felt it didn’t have
a lot of oomph in reserve.
A revised 5-speed manual
gearbox has ratios reasonably
well matched to the engine. All
wheel drive can be selected at
speeds up to 100km/h. As gear
shift actions go, this one is slow,
and feels a bit lumpy, with some
transmission whine when easing
off the throttle on smooth, sealed
roads.
A rake adjustable multipurpose
leather-covered steering
wheel activates audio selection,
cruise control function, speed
limiter and hands-free phone
control. There’s a smartphone
linkage, and bluetooth
connectivity and navigation.
Driver and passenger comforts
include electric windows, power
adjustable black door mirrors,
and automatic air conditioning.
This is the safest Jimny ever
with six airbags, lane departure
warning and weaving alert
function, plus autonomous
emergency braking. It wasn’t
enough to save it from a
decidedly average 3-star ANCAP
crash rating.
The new Jimny is one of the
few authentic SUV off-roaders
fitted with a rigid axle both
front and rear. The three-link
suspension has coil springs and
underpins a sometime jittery
ride over uneven or patchwork
road surfaces. This, and vague
steering, demands the driver
adopt a circumspect approach to
cornering speeds.
With good ground clearance
and its light weight the Jimny
transforms from on-road
muddler to off-road legend,
by easily zipping up muddy
rutted back block tracks without
missing a beat.
Short body overhangs mean it
can successfully wriggle in and
out of tight 4WD situations. The
test vehicle showed plenty of offroad
ability, easily negotiating
steep greasy tracks and a
selection of boggy hill paddocks.
INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed New
Zealand photographer, Andris Apse,
has opened a gallery on the Peninsula
and is inviting people to view and
purchase his award winning
photography by appointment.
Aer 20 years based in Ōkārito, 100
kms south of Hokitika, Andris has
relocated to Diamond Harbour where he
has set up his print workshop and
Landscape Gallery.
Although many may not know of
Andris Apse, many will most certainly
recognise his work. It has been
commissioned by prestigious publications
all around the world and created into
catalogues of sumptuous and coveted
books of photography.
Born in Latvia in northeastern Europe,
Andris spent ve of his early childhood
years in a postwar refugee camp in
Germany before emigrating to New
Zealand and settling in the Bay of Islands
with his mother.
At 18 years of age Andris Apse had no
aspirations to become an award winning
photographer. In fact, he says he didn’t
even have a camera. However taking a
position as a trainee Forestry Worker had
him travelling the country where he
found himself absolutely spellbound by
the breathtaking beauty of Fiordland. He
said he felt a strong need to share this
experience and knew then that he would
Tough kids battle it out
• By Geoff Sloan
IT’S AN annual two-day
event eagerly anticipated by
thousands of Canterbury
primary school pupils.
Sport Canterbury’s ‘Tough
Kid’, held at South New
Brighton Domain last week,
attracted about 4000 pupils
from Hanmer to Ashburton.
The hardy participants ran,
walked and crawled their way
through 19 obstacles along a
3.5km course, vying to see who
was the toughest of the tough.
Sport Canterbury event coordinator
Isaac Sutherland said
it was all about having a good
time with your mates.
