• By Geoff Sloan
IT’S AN annual two-day
event eagerly anticipated by
thousands of Canterbury
primary school pupils.
Sport Canterbury’s ‘Tough
Kid’, held at South New
Brighton Domain last week,
attracted about 4000 pupils
from Hanmer to Ashburton.
The hardy participants ran,
walked and crawled their way
through 19 obstacles along a
3.5km course, vying to see who
was the toughest of the tough.
Sport Canterbury event coordinator
Isaac Sutherland said
it was all about having a good
time with your mates.
“It’s not about being first,
second or third. It’s just about
having a good day, dressing up,
lots of water, mud and obstacles
they can run through. It’s all
about teamwork.”
Parents and teachers were
encouraged to try their luck
on the course as well, with the
New Brighton Volunteer Fire
Brigade on hand to cool down
participants with the fire hose.
Sutherland said Tough
Kid, now in its 13th year, has
become one of the largest
primary school participation
events in the country.
Swim-a-thon to fight breast cancer
BREAST CANCER scares for
people they know have inspired
two friends to swim to raise
money to fight the disease.
Jack Newsome and Matthew
Simpson, both 24, have been
swimming an increasing number
of lengths of breaststroke in the
pool at Newsome’s Casebrook
home, where Simpson is a
flatmate.
They started with one length
on February 13 and are adding
an extra length each day.
Today, day 292, they will swim
292 lengths, and will tackle 293
tomorrow – with the challenge to
be completed on day 365, a year
after they started.
So far they have chalked up
more than 42,000 lengths - and
will have swum nearly 67,000 by
the time they are finished.
Newsome said the physical
struggles pale in comparison to
those diagnosed with cancer.
“Every stroke we take is a
reminder of the challenges faced
by those battling breast cancer,”
he said.
A best mate’s mum and a
cousin were both diagnosed
with breast cancer and while
they responded to treatment
and survived, seeing the impact
it had on them and their loved
ones motivated Newsome and
Simpson to do their part.
The pair have two months to
go.
They have swum every day,
FUNDRAISER: Matthew Simpson (left) and Jack Newsome started swimming laps every
day in February to raise money for breast cancer research. Inset – they shaved their heads
to mark hitting fundraising milestones at $1000 and $2000.
even in winter, when they were
forced to relocate to a friend’s
indoor pool due to the cold.
Whenever they’re asked if
they’ve ever thought about
skipping a day due to weather
or illness, they respond: “People
living with breast cancer don’t get
a day off, neither should we.”
Posting daily updates
to their Facebook page,
breaststroke4breastcancer, the
pair encourage others to join
them or contribute to breast
cancer charities.
“It’s not just about the physical
act,” Simpson said.
“It’s about commitment
everyday, a choice breast cancer
patients don’t have”.
As of Tuesday, the pair had
raised more than $4000 of their
$10,000 goal.
Te Aratai College:
Meaningful Foundations
At Te Aratai College we have four uara-values
that we use to inform what is important in the
teaching and learning that occurs in our space.
The uara that we hold dear and celebrate
are: Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga,
Rangatiratanga and Tūrangawaewae.
They embody our way of being so
we encourage and practise our uara
in everything we do, from our school
philosophy through to our teaching
spaces, curriculum and relationships.
We start with Tūrangawaewae as the
basis of our learning. When a student
feels a sense of belonging they can then
begin to build on the other uara. In our
tohu-logo we see Tūrangawaewae in the
base, the waka we share and navigate
together.
Raniera
Babbington
Te Whakataetae
Kapa Haka
Kura Tuarua o
Aotearoa
Ākonga recently demonstrating
Tūrangawaewae for our kura were part of Te
Rōpu Kapa Haka o Kimihia, our competitive
kapa haka comprised of 5 different kura:
Christchurch Boys’ High School, Christchurch
Girls’ High School, Te Aratai College, Haeata
Community Campus, and Cashmere High
School. Having placed third at the Waitaha
Regional Kapa Haka competition in 2023, it
ushered this rōpu into their first opportunity to
compete at Te Whakataetae Kapa Haka Kura
Tuarua o Aotearoa 2024; where 42 secondary
schools, representing their regions, competed
in the most prestigious kapa haka event on the
school calendar. The lead-up to this event was
intense, with the rōpū training for over 20 hours
a week to bring them up to the level required.
Te Rōpū Kapa Haka o Kimihia delivered
stunning performances for their first stand
in the competition—months of practice and
dedication showcased to the world.
Manaakitanga and Whanaungatanga are
symbolised in our logo as the awa-rivers,
representing the Ōtākaro and Ōpāwaho rivers,
either side of the central maunga-mountain.
Manaakitanga is the process of showing
respect, generosity and care for others.
Whanaungatanga is a relationship through
shared experiences providing people with a
sense of belonging. Ākonga who epitomise
these uara are at the heart of what makes
a community.
Recently, The Daily on Suffolk Cafe
partnered with Te Aratai College business
students so they could sell their creative
products outside the cafe.
Business students outside
The Daily on Suffolk
Talented Tote Bags, a company that
collaborated with elderly artists from
Aldwins House Retirement Village and
Talented, a T-shirt company that helps
promote young artists from our kura, had a
sun-filled afternoon outside the cafe selling
to the public.
This term we have also had Year 9 and 10
ākonga return to the Kimihia Early Learning
Centre to read stories to the tamariki. Our
learners prepared by selecting a picture
book and practised reading the book aloud
before reading the book to the tamariki
during mat time. It was incredible to see the
excitement of the tamariki as they greeted their
visitors and introduced themselves, as well as
their joy as they were read to. Our rangatahi
are equally excited to spend time with these
wonderful tamariki, demonstrating ngā uara
o Te Aratai College of Manaakitanga and
Whanaungatanga.
Rangatiratanga is our forth and final uara.
Rangatiratanga is associated with sovereignty
but extends itself to leadership, autonomy,
and self-determination. In our tohu-logo we
recognize the central maunga-mountain as Pae
Maunga - Kā Tiritiri o Te Moana, the Southern
Alps. The line in the middle represents the
pathway our students take on their journey;
their self-actualisation, the lofty mountain to
which they strive and aspire.
Samantha Foote &
Farah Langridge read
to preschoolers
Te Aratai College nurtures future leaders
and encourages ākonga to demonstrate
Rangatiratanga in everything they do. At our
recent Senior Prizegiving, Smriti Parajuli was
awarded the Te Aratai College Community
Service Award for a second year in a row.
Smriti Parajuli at
Aldwins House
Smriti has been part of the AKC: the Te Aratai
Acts of Kindness Collective, a volunteer group
of ākonga who collected litter around the
school grounds, oversaw positive affirmations
written by students for their peers and
acknowledged school staff for their hard mihi.
The group was also featured in national news
media for their initiative at the Aldwins House
retirement home, regularly visiting residents to
kōrero or play pool, embracing the goodwill in
their community. Smriti is an enduring example
of Rangatiratanga for our kura.
We are delighted how our uara contribute
to our learners’ positive pathways, self
determination and supportive connections
across our community.
Cycleway and wastewater pipe
work to start in the new year
WASTEWATER pipe upgrades,
a street renewal and construction
on the next section of the
Nor’West Arc cycleway will start
next year.
The projects are being carried
out at the same time on Aorangi
Rd, Bryndwr, and will involve
replacing old wastewater pipes
before constructing the cycleway,
which will also extend down
Condell and Matsons avenues.
Work will start in January and
is expected to be completed in
mid-2026.
“This project will have significant
traffic impacts, which we’re
working hard to manage,” said
city council general manager city
infrastructure Brent Smith.
Stage one includes safety
improvements at the intersection
of Wairakei and Aorangi roads,
which will close for three weeks
from January 13. Work has been
timed during the holiday period
when roads are quieter.
Following work at the intersection,
Aorangi Rd will reopen
with traffic management in
place, and a short section of
Wairakei Rd will operate oneway
city-bound for three to four
months.
Detours will be in place during
the intersection and lane
closures, and people are advised
to allow for extra travel time.
“While there will be impacts
on commuters, it’s great to
see work progressing on our
cycleway network that makes it
easier and safer for people to bike
around the city. Cyclist numbers
are continuing to grow as more
routes link up different parts of
Christchurch,” Smith said.
“It’s also much more efficient
when we can time different
projects – whether for roading
or water – to happen together.
It means we only dig up the
road once and minimise traffic
impacts.”
The work will be carried out in
three stages, the first on Aorangi
Rd between Brookside Tce and
Condell Ave starting in January.
Additional work that will
also be carried out includes a
street renewal on Aorangi Rd, a
signalised and raised pedestrian
crossing at Wairakei Rd, and
installation of a new stormwater
network.
“We know road works are
disruptive and want to reassure
residents that we put in a lot of
planning to keep traffic flowing,”
Smith said.
This section of the Nor’West
Arc cycleway is jointly funded
by the city council and the
Government’s shovel ready
project fund.
Tips for a Safe Summer and Festive Season from Kōwhai Vet
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and at Kōwhai Vet
Clinic, we want to make sure your furry family
members join in the merriment safely. The
holidays bring an array of festive foods and
decorations that can pose potential hazards to
our pets. Here’s a reminder of some things to
look out for to keep your four-legged friends
healthy and happy throughout the Christmas
celebrations and summer season…
Chocolate: Keep Dogs Away from the
Dark Side
While chocolate is a delightful treat for us, it
contains theobromine and caffeine that can be
highly toxic to pets. The darker the chocolate the
higher the levels of these substances. Keep all
chocolate goodies, including decorations and gift
wrappings, out of paws’ reach to prevent accidental
ingestion.
Christmas Cake: Not Such a Merry Christmas Treat for
Pets
Raisins, commonly found in Christmas cakes, can be
harmful to dogs, leading to kidney failure.
If your festive spread includes fruitcakes, ensure they are
stored securely, and keep a watchful eye on your pet to
avoid any unwanted snacking. Fresh grapes can be equally
harmful.
Christmas Lilies: A Blooming Catastrophe for Cats
While the beauty of lilies enhances our homes during the
holidays, they are highly toxic to cats.
Ingesting any part of the plant can cause kidney failure.
If you suspect your cat has come into contact with lilies,
contact your vet promptly.
Christmas Decorations: Pretty, but Potentially Perilous
Ornaments, tinsel, and festive lights can attract the
attention of playful pets. Ingesting these decorations can
lead to choking or intestinal blockages. Keep a watchful
eye on your furry friends and consider pet-proofing your
decorations.
Christmas Ham and High-Fat Foods: A Recipe for
Tummy Troubles
While it’s tempting to share your festive feast with your
pet, over-indulgence in high-fat foods like Christmas ham
can cause tummy upsets or even lead to a nasty bout of
pancreatitis. Stick to pet-friendly treats and avoid giving in
to those pleading eyes at the dinner table.
Barbecue Meats with Bones: A Choking Hazard
While indulging in a festive barbecue, it pays to keep half
an eye out for crafty canines hoping to snaffle a sneaky
snack from the feast. Cooked bones can splinter or pieces
of bone can be swallowed whole and can cause serious
internal injuries or blockages in your pet’s digestive
system. Corn cobs and kebab skewers are another
barbecue hazard so dispose of bones and other leftovers
safely and monitor your pet during outdoor gatherings.
Onions and Garlic: Could All End in Tears
Onions and garlic, common ingredients in many meals,
contain compounds that can damage a pet’s red blood
cells, leading to anemia. Ensure all leftovers are kept away
from inquisitive noses to avoid accidental ingestion.
Hops for Home Brew: Not for Furry Friends
For those enjoying home brewing, be aware that the
hops can be toxic to dogs. Ingestion can lead to increased
temperature, rapid breathing, and even death. Ensure
brewing supplies are stored securely away from pets.
Grass Seeds: A Pesky Problem for Paws
Everyone loves getting out for summertime walks, but be
sure to check your dog’s coat for grass seeds when you get
home. Pay particular attention to paws and ears where
these pesky seed heads have a habit of penetrating.
The team at Kōwhai Vet Clinic wishes everyone a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to
welcoming you and your furry companions in good health
in the coming year.
May your holidays be filled with joy, warmth, and the
delightful presence of your beloved pets.
Stay safe and have a Pawsitively wonderful Christmas!
P.S. We will be closed for the Christmas and New Year
long weekends but otherwise available for all your pets
needs (including any unfortunate mishaps that may
occur!)
Children’s charity asks
for community’s help
A CANTERBURY children’s charity is
turning to the public for extra financial
support this Christmas.
Over the past 99 years, Cholmondeley
Children’s Centre has provided respite
care for more than
33,000 Canterbury
children - that’s over
300 children and their
families a year.
“Cholmondeley would
not be eyeing up its
100th year without the
ongoing support from
the Canterbury community.
However, it has Darel Hall
been a difficult couple of years for the
charity sector,” Cholmondeley Children’s
Centre general manager Darel Hall said.
“Many charities are doing it tough and
we are no exception.
“Government agencies only provide 20
per cent of our funding and any reductions
impact the viability of our service,”
he said. Hall joined the centre as general
manager in November following five
years on its board, but his connection to
Cholmondeley goes back nearly 50 years.
“Almost half a century ago I became a
Cholmondeley child.
“The experience at such an important
time as a child created impressions that
have shaped my whole life,” he said.
From experiencing Cholmondeley’s
care first-hand to being part of the team
that delivers it, Hall wants to see the
centre succeed for Canterbury children.
“As Cholmondeley moves towards
its centenary in March I want to thank
the people, volunteers, businesses, and
donors of Canterbury for their support
for Cholmondeley both this year and in
the years to come,” he said.
EDUCATION: Christchurch North College’s campus will be based on
Sheffield Cres in Burnside.
‘We want to engage
disengaged kids’
•From page 1
They are among six new charter schools
to be opened in New Zealand next year
under the Government’s new policy.
Fields says his approach to education is
not “one size fits all”.
“We want to break down any barriers to
education for everyone. We will develop
individual programmes for students,” he
said.
“It’s something we’ve been working
on for a long time. We want to engage
disengaged kids, and have good
relationships with whānau.”
He says they have been “swamped” by
demand for places already. The college
will open with 15 students and will aim
to grow its roll to 60. Along with Fields,
it will employ two teachers, a teacher
aide and an administrator. Fields said the
uniforms are being designed with “plenty
of options” for students to wear.
Fields handed in his resignation to
Chisnallwood last week.
Current deputy principal Todd Blake
will be acting principal from the start of
term one until permanent replacement for
Fields is selected.
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
heat pump is installed.
Anyone wondering about their
eligibility for a subsidised heat pump are
welcome to get in touch for details and
help with the application process.
Toughing it out
as end of term
approaches
Tough Kids was started in 2012 after the Christchurch
earthquakes ruined sporting facilities and left many clubs
without a home. Event co-ordinator Isaac Sutherland said
it aimed to challenge kids to stay active, build resilience,
reduce screen time and improve mental health.
Pickles essential for a summer sandwich
Whether in a cheddar
toastie or a bagel
with avocado and
mozzarella, sandwich
season calls for bright,
sharp pickles, writes
Nigel Slater
Summer pickled
vegetables
The jars should be sterilised if
you want to keep the pickle for
any length of time. Pour boiling
water into them after washing, or
warm them in the oven. Pack the
jars full, with the liquor coming
to the top.
Ingredients
Makes 2 medium Kilner jars
1 small cucumber
1 large shallot
1 medium carrot
4 radishes
6 heaped Tbsp sauerkraut
For the pickle
6 Tbsp white wine vinegar
6 Tbsp cider vinegar
5 Tbsp malt vinegar
2 tsp fennel seeds
15 black peppercorns
8 juniper berries
1 tsp caster sugar
1 tsp salt
Method
• Peel the cucumber, then slice
it in half lengthways. Scoop out
the core and its seeds with a
teaspoon and discard.
• Cut the cucumber into 1cm
thick slices and put them in a
large bowl.
• Peel the shallot, slice into thin
rounds and add to the cucumber.
Scrub the carrot then, using a
potato peeler, shave into long
ribbons. Add these to the bowl,
then thinly slice and add the
radishes and sauerkraut.
• In a small, stainlesssteel
saucepan mix together
the vinegars, fennel seeds,
peppercorns and juniper berries.
• Add the sugar and salt and
place over a moderate heat. Bring
to the boil, stirring until the
sugar and salt have dissolved.
• Pour the hot pickling liquor
over the vegetables and toss
gently together.
• Transfer to clean, sterilised
storage jars, seal and refrigerate
overnight.
Cheese and pickle
mustard-butter
sandwiches
Brushing with mustard butter
before grilling gives a crispness
and delicious piquancy to the
bread. It also makes the surface
brown more quickly, so it is
worth keeping a sharp eye on the
bread’s progress as it cooks. A
small ridged griddle pan is ideal,
but a frying pan is fine, too. Press
it firmly down against the hot
metal to get a crisper finish.
Ingredients
Makes 2 sandwiches
150g fontina (gruyere can be
used as an alternative)
40g butter
4 Tbsp summer vegetable pickle
(see separate recipe)
4 slices sourdough bread
1 tsp dijon mustard
Method
• Coarsely grate the cheese.
Melt the butter in a pan and stir
in the mustard – don’t worry if
it doesn’t mix perfectly. Brush
both sides of the bread with the
mustard butter.
• Heat a griddle pan or frying
pan. Divide the cheese between
two of the slices of bread. Drain
the pickle, then spoon it on top
of the cheese, place the reserved
pieces of bread on top and press
down firmly.
• Put the sandwiches on the
griddle or in the pan and press
down firmly with a palette knife
or a weight.
• When the underside of the
sandwich is golden, turn and
cook the other side. When the
cheese softens and the bread is
golden brown, eat immediately.
Guacamole, pickle and
mozzarella bagel
I prefer to use an avocado that
is not too ripe. The pickle juice
slices through the oily flesh and
also keeps its colour bright.
Ingredients
Makes 4
2 avocados
1 small red chilli
2 tsp grain mustard
a small handful of coriander
leaves
juice of ½ lime
1 Tbsp olive oil
4 bagels
1 × 200g ball mozzarella
8 Tbsp summer vegetable pickle
(see separate recipe)
Method
• Halve, stone and peel the
avocados. Put the flesh into a
bowl, then crush it with a fork.
Finely chop the chilli and add
to the bowl. Stir in the mustard,
coriander leaves, lime juice and
olive oil to give a thick, mustardseed-freckled
cream.
• Split the bagels in half and
toast the cut side under a hot
grill, or in a toaster until lightly
crisp.
• Tear the mozzarella into large,
irregular pieces and place on the
bottom half of the toasted bagels.
• Spread generously with the
avocado cream. Spoon the pickle
on top and place the other half of
the bagel on top and serve.
