Satisfyingyear
rescuing food
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Satisfy Food Rescue has had
arecordbreaking year of
food rescue, with over 1.6
million kilograms of food
saved from landfill to date —
the equivalent of 4.5 million
meals.
It has cemented its role as
champions of sustainability
and is working hard to
support food security in
their community.
Over the past year,
Satisfy’s work has grown to
record highs.
At the end of 2023 it took on
an extra seven supermarket
partners, and went from
rescuing around 20 tonnes of
food every month, to now
regularly distributing nearly
40 tonnes each month across
Christchurch, and the
Waimakariri and Hurunui
Districts.
Satisfy is on track this year
to have a50percent increase
in rescued food when
compared to the 2023/2024
financial year.
Its work is transforming
what could have been waste,
into hundreds of thousands
of nutritious meals for those
in need.
This growth has seen
Satisfy reach even further
into the Christchurch region
and also as far up as
Kaikōura, to partner with
over 50 recipient
organisations, including
food banks, community meal
providers, and schools, to
deliver meaningful change
to over 200,000 people per
year.
Thanks to the unwavering
support of its community,it
has also made exciting
strides toward
sustainability.
Satisfy’s work has the
equivalent impact of
reducing carbon emissions
by an incredible 1732 tonnes
per year.
With 8to10% of harmful
greenhouse gases coming
from global food waste, food
rescue has found an
ingenious way to redirect
surplus while feeding
hungry bellies.
Satisfy’s efforts have also
prevented the equivalent of
over 1.2 billion litres of
water from being wasted —
that’s enough to fill 480
olympic sized swimming
pools.
‘‘Our success is a
testament to the
commitment we see from our
passionate volunteers,
funders, and food donors,’’
Fran Cain from Satisfy says.
‘‘From rescuing food,
nourishing families, to
making our planet more
climate resilient, everything
we do is powered by the
generosity and shared vision
of our incredible
community.’’
As demand for food
support is rising,
particularly among working
families and those in rural
communities, Satisfy
remains steadfast in its
mission to ensure no one in
their community goes
hungry.
With more and more local
supermarkets, wholesalers,
businesses, growers and
even petrol stations coming
on board to donate surplus
food, it doesn’t appear
Satisfy’s work will be
slowing down any time soon.
4WD community thanked
Environmental organisations have
thanked the fourwheeldrive (4WD)
vehicle community for stayingaway
from the AshleyRakahuri River on a
day they havetraditionally celebrated
Crate Day.
The AshleyRakahuri Rivercare
Group, chairwomanSue Mardon said
last Saturday’s massrefrain was a‘‘good
outcome" for the endangered birds who
live and breed along the river.
She thanked the police and the
Department of Conservation (DOC) for
working towards Saturday’s outcome
and also praised the initial Crate Day
organiser Ashley Sargeant for his role in
persuading 4WD owners to stay away
from the river.
Last year between 150 and 200 Crate
Day revellers transformedthe Ashley
RakahuriRiver’s nesting grounds into
party central, putting the vulnerable
birds and chicks in severe danger during
their breeding season.
The incident caused apublic outcry
and prompted Ashley to call for Crate
Day celebrations to be transferredfrom
the first SaturdayinDecembertothe
first Saturday in February.
During the week leadinguptolast
Saturday, Ashley took to social media
again to remind 4WD enthusiasts to stay
away from the river and mostheeded
that call.
Asmall number of 4WDs turned up at
the Okuku River, near the Ashley
RakahuriRiver confluence where the
damage was done last year, but they did
not stay long and did not drive their
vehicles along the exposed stony
riverbed where many of the birds nest.
Environment Canterbury’s (ECan)
parks and forests team leader Karen
Elliott said the regional council was also
pleased fourwheel drive vehicle
On guard ... Rare Blackfronted Tern guard their nest in the Ashley River bed. The birds
were not disturbedlast weekend, thanks to the 4WD fraternity heeding the angst of
environmental organisations about the intrusion of 4WD vehicles and staying away instead
of celebrating Crate Day cruising the river bed and putting rare nesting birds and hatched
chicks at risk.
owners stayed away from the Ashley
Rakahuri River lastSaturday.
However, agroup of drivers held an
eventonthe Waimakariri River, which
was alsohome to vulnerable, groundnesting
birds, she said.
‘‘We wanttoremind everyone to avoid
braided riverbeds during nesting season
(September1to February 1) to protect
the groundnesting birds.
Thesebirds and their eggs are very
difficult to spot.
‘‘If adult birds are frightened away
from their nests by vehiclesor
pedestrians and stay away for 10
minutesormore, the chicks in their eggs
will chill and die.’’
Waimakariri District Mayor Dan
Gordon met with 4WD clubs, police,
DOC, environmental groups, councillors
and community board members, earlier
this year about ensuring there is ongoing
access to the AshleyRakahuri River.
‘‘What was clear (from that meeting)
was that all groups want the best for the
environment,’’ he said.
‘‘I will be following up on this issue
again in the New Year and meeting with
stakeholders to reassess the situation.
‘‘It is my hope that all river users will
treat this area with respect, particularly
during nesting season.
If this is not the case then we will have
to look at what other options we need to
take to ensure the protection of our
endangered wildlife.’’
Daiken NZ pleads guilty over creek spill
BYSHELLEY TOPP
Daiken New Zealandhas pleaded guilty
in the Christchurch District Court to a
charge relating to aspill into Saltwater
Creek last year by the company.
The Sefton company plead guilty early
last month.
The charge was laid by Environment
Canterbury (ECan) after the regional
council's investigation into the
September 1, 2023, spill, and its impact
on shellfish gathering in Saltwater
Creek and the Ashley/Rakahuri River
estuary.
manner is astrict liability offence,
meaning adefendantwill be liable even
wherethe discharge was an accident,
Chair offers to
meet society
By SHELLEY TOPP
Environment Canterbury
(ECan) chair Craig Paulinghas
offered to meet members of the
KaiapoiRiver Protection
Society.
Societymembers recently
sent Mr Pauling arequest
asking for ECan to introduce a
12month sprayfree trial along
the Kaiapoi Rivertosee if it
improves the health of the
waterway.
He responded by offering to
meet representatives of the
society, although adate has not
been confirmed.
The society’s initial chair,
Peter Casserly,ofKaiapoi, has
stepped down from the role,
but remains on the committee.
His replacement is Paul Ayres,
of Kaiapoi.
During avisit to Saltwater
Creek last week, at the Factory
Road /Amesbury Road,
intersection bridge, Paul,
Peter, and another committee
member, Leon Manera, said
they would like Mr Pauling to
come out to Waimakariri and
visit the area with them.
This part of the creek was an
example of what ahealthy
waterway should look like, they
said.
‘‘It is apristine area with
clean, fresh, swimmable water,
insect life, including little red
dragonflies, vertebrates,
whitebait, eels, and
cockabullies,’’ Peter said.
‘‘It isaperfect little stream
for fly fishing. Thisiswhat it
should look likeand what all
our rivers,creeks and streams
could look like if we stop
spraying weedkillers along side
them. The health of this part of
the creek is acredittothe work
being done by the Sefton
Saltwater Creek Catchment
Group,’’Peter said.
The group is led by Carolyne
Latham, who is also chair of the
Waimakariri Waterzone
Committee. She said it was
‘‘great to hear’’that people
thought Saltwater Creek was
looking so good.
‘‘It has been the driest year I
have ever seen for 30 years,’’
she said.But nearly 90mm of
rain at the endofOctober had
brought some relief and abit
more flow back into the creeks.
The catchmentgroup was
established in 2020 with the
aim of establishing acollective
community voice for the
waterway.
‘‘We felt there was value in
having acollective voice, and
we wanted to know more about
the catchment and our
waterways,’’Carolyne said.
‘‘Our vision is actually:
Healthy waterways, healthy
land, healthy people, healthy
future. Our goals are, being
able to fish, swim and enjoy our
waterways; have more native
trees and vegetation and
understanding and monitoring
the health of our catchment.’’
Kaiapoi’sbig day out ahit
Achange of venue for Kaiapoi’s
Christmas Carnival and anew
route forthe Santa Parade has
proved ahit with the community
with large crowds attending both
events.
Kaiapoi Promotions, organisers
of the events, and another, the
Sounds of Summer, which were all
held last Saturday in the
Rivertown, said they were thrilled
with the support they received
from the community and local
businesses for all three events and
is looking forward to repeating it
next year.
The Christmas Carnival and
Santa Parade have previously
been held in the centre of
Kaiapoi’scentral business
district.
However, this year the
Christmas Carnival was moved to
Kaiapoi Park, in Smith Street, and
people spoken to at the event said
they liked the change because
there was better parking options
close by, and more space in the
park which made it family and
mobility friendly.
This year’s Santa Parade set off
from Dale Street, travelled west to
Ranfurly Street, turning south
along Ranfurly Street before
ending at Wylie Park on Sidey
Quay.
People at the event said they
liked being able walk to thearea
with their children.
The day’s triple crown of
entertainment events began in the
morning with the Christmas
Carnival which featured a
finished about 2pm with the large
crowd moving out of the park on to
Ranfurly Street to wait for the
Santa Parade to begin at 2.30pm. A
big line up of colourful and quirky
floats took part in the parade with
the big man in the red suit himself
arriving on asleigh with reindeer
at 3pm. Kaiapoi’s big day out
continued into the night with the
Kaiapoi’s CBK Craft Bar and
Kitchen, featuring atalented lineup
of musicians including the
Jordan Luck Band, Assembly
Keating, and an Octave Below.
Comedian Leigh Hart was also a
crowd favourite. CBK owner
By SHELLEY TOPP
Equine Connect, anew well being
course being offered by Comcol North
Canterbury in Rangiora is providing a
‘‘confidence stepping stone’’ for
people of all ages dealing with stress,
anxiety, depression, trauma or
physical challenges.
No experience with horses is
necessary for the 10week programme
which offers acomfortable, relaxing
and therapeutic environment for small
groups of participants.
Comcol North Canterburyhas been
providing programmes for over 40
years across arange of disciplines
with the focus of ‘‘creating better lives
within our community’’, Comcol's
Chief Executive Kate O’Connor says.
‘‘The new course is aresponse to the
recognition that statistics show poor
mental health outcomes are
increasing and support options
limited.’’
Horses have been part of the North
Canterbury campus since the early
2000s, and many individuals have
benefited from their interactions with
the animals over the years.
The idea for Equine Connect came
from Comcol's equine tutor Corey Miln
who witnessed first hand how
spending time with horses could
improve wellbeing.
He saw how being around the calm,
gentle, non judgemental horses at
Comcol helped improve confidence
and overall happiness in the people
handling them.
‘‘Whether you are dealing with
stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or
physical challenges, Equine Connect
offers apowerful natural way to heal
or grow,’’ Corey says.
‘‘It is not acounselling service. Iam
not acounsellor. It is the horses who
provide the healing here.’’
Equine Connect offers oneonone
time to connect with horses and it also
provides apositive, safe space for
individual growth.
Fifty six people took part in the
Equine Connect course this year and
they say it has given them something to
look forward to in their week.
Participants also say spending time
with the horses and learning how to be
around them has helped them learn to
stay focused on the task at hand and
that experience has given them
confidence to try new things.
Feedback from Rangiora and
Kaiapoi high schools, which were
offered Equine Connect sessions for
pupils during the year, has also been
positive with participants showing
improvements in self confidence,
communication skills, school
attendance, and connecting with peers
and family.
Comcol will continue offering
Equine Connect next year. If you, a
friend or afamily member are
interested in doing an Equine Connect
course check out Comcol’s website
Rural health forgotten
By DAVID HILL,
local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury’s mayors fear rural
communities are still being forgotten as
the health crisis drags on.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black says little
has changed to improve local
accountability in the health system
despite the appointment of aSouth Island
based Te WhatuOra Health NZ director.
Earlier this year Mrs Black and
Waimakariri mayor Dan Gordon
expressed their support when Health
Minister Shane Reti announced in
February there would be areturn of some
form of local decision making.
The mayors felt local accountability had
been lacking since district health boards
were replaced by Health NZ in 2021.
Health NZ announced the appointment
of four regional deputy executive
directors, including one based in
Christchurch, in July.
Mrs Black and Mr Gordon said they had
heard nothing further since the
announcement.
The concerns have prompted the
Canterbury Mayoral Forum tocall for a
meeting with Dr Reti ‘‘to talk about health
across the region’’.
‘‘The Canterbury PHO (Waitaha
Primary Health) continues toplay an
important role, but there seems to be a
link which is no longer there,’’ Mrs Black
said.
‘‘It is sad that our health system feels as
fragile as it does.’’
The mayors would like to see some
certainty about the future of Oxford and
Waikari hospitals, which provide respite,
palliative and aged care beds.
Both facilities have faced staffing issues
and were closed briefly during Covid.
Attracting staff to work in rural
communities remains achallenge, Mrs
Black said.
Mr Gordon, who is the Waitaha Primary
Healthboard deputy chair, said he is
continuing to advocate forlocal
accountability.
‘‘It is essential that we have apoint of
‘‘I have been campaigning for
afterhours health care for our district and
Iwill continue to have those
conversations in the new year to progress
that.’’
Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle said his
district is ‘‘a wee bit spoilt’’, due to its
isolation, with afull equipped medical
centre.
But he understood the issues faced by
other rural communities.
‘‘I totally support what Marie and Dan
are wanting with rural healthcare and it
helps us too,’’ Mr Mackle said.
Dr Reti said he understood the
challenges of providing sustainable
health services in rural areas.
‘‘We know that addressing the rural
workforce shortage is key to improving
access to health services for people living
in remote, harder to reach communities.’’
He said the Government has introduced
a$9100 accommodation allowance for
trainees who live within 30km of their
rural GP practice, funding for communitybased
placements for postgraduate
interns and funding to support rural
practices.
It also aims to increasethe number of
GPs trained per year to 300 by 2026,
including more Māori, Pacific and rural
GPs.
Telehealth is being used to plug gaps in
health services,DrReti said.
Te Whatu Ora Te Waipounamu deputy
chief executive Martin Keogh said he
plans to meet with Canterbury’s mayors in
the New Year.
‘‘Health NZ is focused on growing the
rural workforce, and across the South
Island we are working with our rural
providers and PHOs on how sustainable
healthcare services can be delivered
depending on the local context.’’ He said
recruitment is under way to fill vacancies
at Canterbury’s four rural hospitals,
January disruptions on Douglas Road
Amberley residents are being urged to
plan ahead of disruptions to traffic flow
on Douglas Road from Monday, January
13 to Friday, January 31. 2025.
Anew watermain is being installed on
the rail crossing.
HurunuiDistrict Councils Operations
Manager Roading Charlie Hutt said this
will mean delays to traffic flows with
some periodic full road closures.
If afull closure happens, adetour will
be established, which will add
considerable time and distance to some
journeys.
In order to meet KiwiRail
requirements for this work to proceed,
there will be changes to the usual flow of
traffic.
The work has been timed to take
advantage of the school holidays and
runs 7am and 5pm weekdays. The road
will reopen overnight and weekends.
However,the road layout may be
altered during these times.
Sale time ... St James horses which run in the Ada Valley in the St James Conservation Park, will go on sale at the annual auction on
January 25.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
St James horse sale next month
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The biennial St James horse sale is
offering something new for buyers at
next year’s January 25 sale.
Six ‘green’ broken 3yearold horses
will be on offer.
The horses, which run in the St James
Conservation Park, in aherd of about 80,
are managed and owned by the Dampier
Crossley family under an agreement with
the Department of Conservation (DoC).
Hugh Dampier Crossley says ateam
went out to the Ada Valley acouple of
weeks ago and led the horsesin.
They were loaded on to astock truck at
Lake Tennyson and trucked to Tim
Costello and Casey Irvine's at Hawarden.
There they have been handled and all
have been ridden, and will sell with
about 10 farm rides under their belts.
Hugh says it is hoped the broken
horses may appeal to people wanting
horses that are more advanced than what
had been offered in the past.
It is hoped to have 30 horses on sale,
with the remainder being brought in, and
also trucked to the cattle yards in the St
James Conservation area as it had
worked well with the six which were
being broken in.
He says the cattle tracks which the sale
horses usually used were becoming too
hard on the horses as they were
mustered into the holding paddocks near
the yards nestled in the Clarence Valley.
The horses are renowned for their
toughness and are sought by those
wanting ahorse for hunting, jumping,
threeday eventing, endurance or station
work.
Hugh says the sale is agreat family day
out in the country —asocial gathering
for those attending from near and far.
The sale site is about 25 minutes from
Hanmer Springs with viewing of the
horses from 12 noon, with the sale at
2pm.
Buyers can also bid on line at the Bdir
platform.
Hugh says anew cellphone tower
nearby will make this an easier option
for buyers, and also allow eftpos to be
used with afood truck on site.
‘‘People can make aday of it,’’ he says.
The Stevenson’s had owned the St
James Station since 1927.
The highcountry property was bought
by the Government in 2009 and is now
managed by DoC.
Appeal rejected
North Canterbury News, December 12, 2024
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Aproposed Hanmer Springs flyride has
been given the go ahead by the Environment
Court.
But there are still afew bumps in the
road.
The Environment Court issued an interim
decision on Friday to reject an appeal by
The Friends of Conical Hill Incorporated,
three years after aHurunui District Council
appointed commissioner granted aresource
consent.
The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and
Spa had applied to install and operate a
gravitybased recreation activity at Conical
Hill Reserve.
Hurunui District Council chief executive
Hamish Dobbie said the council is relieved
to finally get adecision.
‘‘It is good news. It has taken along time
to get here, but at least we’ve got adecision.
We will need to work through the viability of
the project and then the council can
consider what it does next.’’
Mr Dobbie said staff will prepare areport
to present to the council early in the New
Year. The project received $2 million from
the Government's ‘‘Shovel Ready’’fund in
2020.
When first proposed, the attraction was
expected to create 23 jobs and inject $4
million into the local economy in its first five
years of operation.
Submitters opposed to the flyride said it
would have avisual impact on the
recreation character, biodiversity and horse
trails in the area. Concerns were also raised
about parking, traffic congestion, noise,
along with the risk of fire, and devaluation
of properties.
In her decision, Judge Lauren Semple
said she is satisfied the effects of the
proposal are able to be managed under the
Hurunui District Plan and the National
Policy Statement on Indigenous
Biodiversity.
Harleston’srestoration is well under way
By ROSEMARYBAIRD.
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga
You could drive down Main North Road
at Leithfield, without even knowing that
you are passing one of the district’s
oldest buildings. Harleston, aGeorgian
style Category 2Historic Place on the
New Zealand Heritage List Rārangi
Kōrero, was built for wool carter, James
Ashworth in 1863.
Members of the Ashworth family lived
there until 1986 —planting gardens,
farming and bringing up families.
In the late 1990s the property was
turned into aBed &Breakfast, but the
Canterbury earthquakes, left it damaged
and derelict.
Enter Allan Paterson and Phil Smart,
who purchased the property in 2019,
mostly for the onsite barn to dry
sphagnum moss for Allan’s business.
The garden was overgrown, and the
house had been empty for seven years
after it was redstickered.
The home’s copper piping and water
pump had been stolen. But once theysaw
the house, they knewtheyhad to save it.
‘‘You just know the house had to be
restored,’’ says Allan. ‘‘It’snot astately
home, but it is agrand old country
home.’’
In 2021 and 2022 Allan and Phil
received two grants from the National
Heritage Preservation Incentive Fund.
The first grant helped fund repairs to
the limestone façade, which is almost
complete.
Peter Dunn and his team have been
working replacing limestone lintels with
stone from the Black Hill quarry.
More impressively, they have been
chipping paint off the external limestone
blocks, by hand –with hammer and
chisel.
Heritage NZ Conservation Advisor,
Mike Gilles, says, the work Peter and his
team have done on the limestone is
amazing.
‘‘Most people would never have the
dedication to remove the paint.’’
‘‘The result is you can now see the
demarcation between the grouting and
the stone.
‘‘Removing the paint reveals the
original shaping marks on the limestone
faces, and allows the stone to breathe,
helping with dampness.’’
New lime grouting has also been made
onsite by Peter.
The project is now ready to enter the
second phase of seismic strengthening
and additions.
Helities will be secured through the
limestone blocks to ply on the other side,
to tie in the rubble fill.
An addition will house newbathrooms,
and the windows will be double glazed.
Allan and Phil are planning to
preserveoriginal elements such as sash
windows and Baltic pine flooring.
The plan is for aB&B, run by Phil, to
Allan Paterson ... An owner, showing the
new limestone lintels from Black Hill quarry.
open in two years.
‘‘This will be adestination, and we
hope people will stay for afew days,’’
Phil says.
‘‘There’s the beach, the gardens and
the property, which also has avineyard,
planted from French rootstock.’’
Heritage Area Manager for
Canterbury/West Coast, Arlene Baird
commends the efforts.
‘‘It’s fantastic that Allan and Phil are
committed to this project and are taking
the time to do it properly.’’
Generous donation buys club more time
11
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
A generous donation has bought a
Rangiora sports club more time, as it
considers the future of its heritage
building.
The Rangiora Bowling Club has
received adonation of $12,000from
local business Chance Voight
Investment Partners to help pay for its
insurance bill.
The donation follows an article by
Local Democracy Reporting last month
where the club appealed for community
support.
The club faces increasing
maintenance and insurance costs for its
113yearold pavilion.
But the building is registered with
Heritage New Zealand and listed in the
Waimakariri District Plan, leaving the
club with few options.
Chance Voight business development
manager Laura Patterson visited the
club during abowling tournament last
week to make apresentation to
Rangiora Bowling Club sponsorship coordinator
Ross Mehrtens.
‘‘What Laura and the team has done
for us is amazing,’’ Mr Mehrtens said.
‘‘It is usually me banging on adoor
asking for money.’’
He said the club has received positive
feedback from people wanting to help.
‘‘We were testing the waters in terms
of what could happen with the heritage
listing and the response has been
interesting.’’
Ms Patterson said Chance Voight is
pleased to be able to help the club.
‘‘We were already sponsoring the club,
so when Iread the article Iwent to our
founder, Bernard Whimp, and he said ‘I
Community support ... Rangiora Bowling Club sponsorship coordinator Ross Mehrtens
(left), receives acheque from Chance Voight business development manager Laura
Patterson.
PHOTO: DAVID HILL
think we need to help them’.
‘‘It is about giving back to the
community and it is good that we are
able to support local clubs like this on
the back of the success of the firm.’’
Mr Mehrtens said the club is open to
finding asolution and is continuing to
have conversations with the
Waimakariri District Council, which is
helping the club to produce afeasibility
study.
‘‘There are all manner of proposals,
but there is nothing concrete’’.
While the pavilion is ‘‘aesthetically
pleasing’’ to look at, it has anoncompliant
stairwell and there is no
wheel chair access, he said.
It is believed it would cost more than
$1 million to bring the pavilion up to
code.
Ideally the club would like to
demolish the pavilion so it can upgrade
its main building and remain on 7000
square metre site.
An attached building behind the
pavilion is sufficient to meet the needs
of the 140 members.
Mr Mehrtens said club
representatives recently met with
Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey.
Mr Doocey said he has written to Arts,
Culture and Heritage Minister Paul
Goldsmith to ask ‘‘whether there might
be an appetite to remove the heritage
listing’’.
‘‘Removing the heritage listing would
enable the club to make the best
decisions for its future without
encountering prohibitive costs or
restrictions.
‘‘I will meet with club members again
once Ihave received the Minister’s
response.’’
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon said
council staff are continue to work with
the bowling club to identify options.
‘‘Once they have worked together to
explore the various opportunities these
will be presented to council for further
consideration.
‘‘I think it is great news that the
bowling club has received adonation
from alocal business to help pay its
insurance bill with the heritage
building.’’
AHeritage New Zealand Pouhere
Taonga spokesperson said being on the
New Zealand Heritage List did create
any direct legal obligations for property
owners, but provided recognition and
other benefits such as free expert advice
and potential sources of funding.
The pavilion is listed in the
Waimakariri District Plan, which sets
rules around what changes can be made
to aproperty.
Farmerscontinue to recover from drought
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Hurunui’s farmers are experiencing
‘‘a normal dry summer’’, as they
continue to recover from an
‘‘insidious drought’’, MayorMarie
Black says.
But she said the ongoing effects are
still being felt despite the Labour
Weekend rain, when between 50mls
and 100mls fell across the district.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay
declared amediumscale adverse
event in the district in March as there
had been no significant rainfall for
several months.
‘‘The dryland farmersare probably
experiencing anormal season now, as
we are typicallydry over the summer,’’
Mrs Black said.
‘‘But it is what happened before
which will cause achallenge.’’
Mrs Black said reports indicated
contractors were busy as farmers look
to cash in on the spring growth by
producing some much needed hay and
baleage.
Feed stores will need to be
BySHELLEY TOPP
restocked before nextwinter, but in
the meantime managing feed over the
summer will be achallenge.
While there is warm weather for
growth, there is ‘‘too much heat’’ and
not enough follow up rain, she said.
The lack of rain overthe last 12
months has left ground water levels,
rivers andwater ways dangerously
low.
‘‘The nature of adrought is it is
really silent and insidious.
‘‘It is not like other natural disasters
where there is adramatic event which
captures the media’s attention.’’
Animprovement in livestockprices
had given aboost to farmers, who were
generally managing their stock well,
she said.
The Hurunui Adverse Events
Committee has run several online and
onfarm events to advise what support
is available and to offer tips, such as
whether to wean lambs early.
The committee is chaired by
PestFree Waimakariri nature photo competition
Photographers will get the chance to win
some great prizes in Pest Free
Waimakariri’s nature photo competition
being held during the summer holidays.
The competition aims to get people out
and about in Waimakariritoshowcase the
many parks and reserves in the district
and the abundance of wild life living
there.
After the success of the inaugural
competition last year, Pest Free
Waimakaririranger Richard Chambers
says they were keen to hold another one.
‘‘Waimakaririhas agreat rangeof
landscapes from the sea to mountain
ranges behind,’’ he says.
‘‘These hold adiversity of native
wildlife, the common fantail to the less
common braided river birds, butterflies
andreptiles. We want to celebrate these
and encourage people to spend time in the
outdoors capturing this in photographs
over the Christmas/New Year break.’’
There was also an abundance of native
wildlife ‘‘living along side us in our
backyards’’, Richard says.
‘‘Where we live makes up agreat habitat
for some of our wildlife so this can also be
captured in photographs for the
competition.
‘‘Last year we had some great closeup
photos, especially of birds. This year we
want to encouragephotos which also show
the environment where you photographed
the bird or insect. This year the
competition is being sponsored by the
WaimakaririBiodiversity Trust, a
charitable community trust providing
information, education and resources to
support the Waimakariri community in
protecting, restoring, creating and
sustainably managing indigenous
biodiversity throughout the district.
The competition, which closes on
January 31, with the winners notified on
February 9, is also being supported again
by Cameo Fine Arts.
By ROBYNBRISTOW
New recruits are on the beat in the
Hurunui Police Sub Area, bringinga
full complement of staff to the area in
time for the busy holiday season ahead.
Hurunui Sub area supervisor Rob
Irvine says four new police have taken
up positions in Oxford, Amberley and
Cheviot.
‘‘This includes the first women police
officer in the Hurunui District,’’ he
says.
Constable Sarah Growcott has taken
up aposition in Amberley.
She is from Broomfield, has ayoung
family, and is involved in the local
school and community, says Mr Irvine.
Senior Constable Jonathan Stagg,
who lives in the Oxford area, and has a
young family, has moved from the
RangioraStation to workinOxford.
Constable Jeffrey Power, who has
been in Cheviot for ayear, has moved to
Amberley withhis young family, while
Constable Ben Hide has taken upa
position in Cheviot, moving from the
Selwyn area with his young family.
Mr Irvine says the new recruits arrive
as experienced officers leave to take up
new appointments, or left the New
Zealand Police.
This includes Senior Constable Brian
Dewes, who has been in Cheviot for the
past 15 years, Bill Parker who has been
in Amberley 10 yearsand has gone back
to policingonthe West Coast, Tim
Sandford from Cheviot, who worked in
Amberley for eight years, and has gone
to Australia to take up apolice position,
and Aiden Cawley of Oxford.
‘‘Thereare some big changes, but it is
exciting to have new young staff who
live locally, and who are involved in
their communities,’’ Mr Irvine says.
The Kaiapoi Toastmasters Club has ceased
to exist, and the new Kaiapoi Speakers Club
(KSC) has emerged to replace the popular
public speaking and selfconfidenceinspiring
worldwide association.
Coordinator Dean Severinsensays that
after 20 years of working with the
Toastmasters International(TMI) format,
members decidedthe cost outweighedthe
benefits as many did not engage with the
TMI Pathways online programme.
Pathways is the Toastmasters educational
programme,designed to help members
build public speaking, communication, and
leadership skills. Members access
educationalmaterials digitally.
Dean says the new Kaiapoi Speakers
format reflects what the Christchurch
Speakers Club designed and tested when
they split from the TMI, so they know it
works.
‘‘Our meetings are held on the third
Tuesday of every month, while theirs are on
the first Tuesday of the Month, so people
can attend both clubs if they want to.
‘‘For 2025 we won’t be charging any fees to
attract more members to the club,’’ says
Dean, ‘‘We are moving in anew direction
but we still retain some of the same familiar
meeting formats we had under
Toastmasters.’’
Following an icebreakerwith everyone,
we will listen to two organised speeches
then, we will have some impromptu speech
challenges.
Dean says this is afun part of the night
because everyone will be invited to speak on
athemed topic.
KSC speaker Mark Glanville says
Rangiora TMI members can join their club
also. KSC meets on the third Tuesday of
every month at the Riverside Church Hall,
45 Charles Street at 7:15pm. The first
meeting is January 21.
Canterbury News, December 12, 2024
Love your home
Trees are an integral partofChristmas
Christmas trees of all shapes, sizes and
varieties continue to be the ‘goto’
Christmas icon in people's houses and
shop windows.
Their history dates back millennia,
ranging from the use of evergreens in
ancient Egypt and Rome to the olden
Germanic traditionsofcandlelit trees
that made their way to Americainthe
1800s.
Christmas Trees have been an integral
part of Christmas celebrations for
generations.
While they stand tall and proud in the
face of marketingonslaughts concerning
the hot toys or decorationsfor this year's
festive season such as hairy gnomes,
many people still recall fond memories
of decorating the traditional triangularshaped
Fir tree read Pine tree in New
Zealandwhich is often afamily affair in
many households.
New alternative versionsofthe tree
appear in the shops each Christmas
season to challenge people's perception
of what aChristmas tree should look
like.
While you can find ahundred and one
varieties of the traditional green tree
coated or uncoated in white snow,
natural or synthetic, preassembled or
not, with or without astar on top, some
of the latest variants found in gift and
home accessoriesshops,include
delicate wireframed3Dtriangles
covered in LEDs which blink and gleam
invitingly.
There are triangularlight stalks with
LEDs that change colour on cue,
pseudoOlive trees covered in LEDs,
and fairylightcovered Arctic Birch
Trees which come in champagne or
white colours, to suit the room decor.
The shape is simple enough which
makes it easy to create when the family
has relocated to the riverside bach.
You can make acceptable alternative
Christmas trees out of driftwood or
forest debris which lets you be as
creative as you want.
Another alternative is using one of the
many tall pot plants already residing in
yourlounge just use tinsel and
wrapping paper to decorate it.
If you wanttokeep it very
minimalistic, then try using justone flat
piece oftimber cut into atriangle shape
or repurposed packing pallets, MDF
boards or custom wood scraps cut into
tree shapes.
Above all have fun creatingyour own
special ChristmasTree.
Kaiapoi artist Genavieve
Amyes was akeen observer of
the natural world and the
power of visual storytelling
from ayoung age.
Now the visual artist uses
those observational skills to
enrich her artwork and has her
first solo exhibition, Biosphere,
at the Art on the Quay Gallery
in Kaiapoi.
However, her work has also
been featured in group/
community exhibitions, such as
the Kaiapoi Art Expo, the
Rangiora Art Society Spring
Exhibition and the Arts
CanterburyCashmere Show,
for three or four years.
She was an artistic child but
never studied art, although for
along time she wished she had.
‘‘As an adult Ihave engaged
in various creative hobbies
before focusing more seriously
on painting in the last decade,’’
she said.
Genavieve, who is also an
early childhood teacher, loved
flowers as achild, loves
gardening as an adult and
grows alot of flowers whichare
featured in her exhibition.
She grew up on the South
Island’s West Coast and soon
developed an appreciation for
the area’s native plant life, bird
life and scenic vistas.
‘‘The West Coast landscape is
simultaneously lush, rich and
dense, and rugged, rough and
lonely. It taught me to look for
Exploration of nature ...
Kaiapoi artist Genavieve
beautiful things, tiny fungi,
flowers, ferns, patterns in the
sand, subtle colour variations
in the cloud cover, the shape of
the land forms against the sea
and sky,’’ she says.
An early influence for
Genavieve's work was Nora
Debolt, an American artist in
the late 1800s early 1900s who
had an impressionistic style,
and a‘‘soft dreamy colour
palette’’ that the child in me
loved. Although the
Impressionists have a
particular appeal for
Genavieve, she enjoys learning
from all art styles.
‘‘I love the term
`Expressionism; painting with
expression,' creating work that
others feel when they view it.’’
The exhibition closes on
Wednesday, January 8.
SUMMER GARDENING
North Canterbury News, December 12, 2024
Mulchtobeat heat
Assummer kicks into top gear and
temperatures soar, laying mulch around
your plants is one sure way to conserve
moisture, protect plants from heat, and
suppress weeds.
Agenerous five centimeter layer of
mulch will serve to protectroots from
drying out in the summer sun and has
the added benefit of protecting plant
roots from the freezethaw cycle during
winter.
Amulch layer around vegetables and
flowers will effectively hold in moisture
around the roots on hot summer days.
Good advice from gardening experts is
to water in the morning before the day
gets too hot.
Giving your garden agood deep soak
every few days is better than shallow
watering bysprinklers every day.
This routine serves to encourage deep
roots and helps plants better survive the
short term effects of the hot dry summer
conditions.
Alternatively, biodegradable mulches
breakdown gradually to release
nutrients into the soil and help improve
soil structure.
One other hint is to keep yourgarden
weed free, so your plants don’t haveto
competefor what water and nutrients
are available.
Watercare experts advise that it is
always better to have the mulch spread
by the beginning of the growing season
and reapply it throughout the year if it
starts to become too thin to keep the soil
moist.
However, it is never too late to put
mulch on the garden.
If the ground is dry, remember to
water first before puttingthat first layer
of mulch down.
Lucerne and pea straw are best suited
for kiwi gardens that need regular
maintenance such as vegetable patches.
They break down more quickly than
any other organic mulch and arevery
rich in nitrogen for plant growth.
Eucalyptus and pine barks or chips
(including sawdust) are the best picks for
laying aroundhardier shrubs and trees.
The use of woodchips and shredded
bark is promoted by experts because it
acts as insulation, protecting the soil
from direct sunlight and buffering air
temperature extremes.
The result is cooler soils that favour
root uptake of water.
Kiwigardenerexperts advisewhen
using your lawn grass clippings as
mulch, remember to blend them in with
other composting elements and don’tgo
too thick as grass takes along time to
break down.
Kiwigardener
Planting time ... There is still plenty of time to plant vegetables to enjoy over the summer
months.
PHOTO; FILE
Still time to plant veges
While it may appear you have missed
the boat for summer crops in your
vegetable garden, don’t despair as
time is still on your side.
Even though the sun is beating down
from up on high, take the time to
prepare the ground well.
Adding amulch layer around your
new plantings will help conserve the
water needed to get them going.
Crops grown yearround include
carrots, beets, beans, spinach, greens,
and the perennial favourites: lettuces
and radishes.
These can all be sown in mid to late
summer as the soil is warm, helping
the seeds germinate quickly.
Wanting afaster crop, you can also
use bought plants available in
quantities from your local garden
centres, they grow well.
Another late summer treat is baby
carrots which are tasty and fun to
grow, and are usually ready within five
to six weeks. Tomatoes will continue to
grow throughout summer as will herbs.
Kiwigardener magazine experts
advise if your garden is small, grow
plenty of herbs as they don’t take up
much space, and arepretty hardy.
Today they can be one of the more
expensive fresh foods in supermarkets
and arevital for you're culinary
enjoyment.
For those on holiday at home, use
the time over the Christmas breakto
sow and plant suitable aboveground
crops, but watch out for pests.
Always consider companion
plantings as these serve adual role in
giving you some vegetables/herbs you
may not have considered growing
before and provide adeterrent for
pests.
Keep on top of weeds.
Not only areweeds unsightly, but
they also compete with seedlings for
valuable moisture and nutrients –so
why water weeds? Weeds attract insect
pests like aphids, green vegetable bugs
and whiteflies, so keeping on top of
them will help limit crop damage.
Schools getmixed news
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterburyschools are facing
mixed news as they wait for much needed
school building projects.
Ministry of Educationspokesperson
Sandra Orr said the Ministry has been
working with local school boards of
trustees on options to address different
schools’ needs.
Amuch anticipated school building
project is under way at Te Kura oTuahiwi,
and atemporarysolution has been found
at Woodend School.
But projects at Amuri Area School,
Oxford Area School and Kaiapoi North
School remain in limbo.
Several North Canterbury school
building projects were placed on hold
earlier this year while the Ministry
conducted areview of 352 projects in abid
to save $2 billion.
In July, the Ministry announced that 100
projects were on hold, while 252 were
going ahead. Of those, 110 would progress
with changes.
The announcement was good news for
Te Kura oTuahiwi, with groundwork on
six new teaching spaces (four for roll
growth) and ahall getting under way last
month.
Planning was also able to progress to
designanew building for science,
technologyand arts classes at Amuri Area
School, but will have to wait until July to
find out whether the project can progress.
Building projects at Oxford Area School
and Kaiapoi North School remain in
limbo, while Swannanoa School’s board of
trustees took the initiative by turning a
store room into aclassroom earlier this
year.
Ms Orr said the Ministry is focusing on
delivering value for money.
Options included using standardised,
offsite manufactured or modular
classrooms.
‘‘This shift has been reflected in the
property solutions for the projects
proceeding in North Canterbury,’’ she
said.
‘‘Investment in North Canterbury
schools will be identified through a
school’s ten year property planning and
delivered by them through their five year
agreement capital funding.’’
The Ministry will take the lead on larger
projects, she said. Te Kura oTuahiwi,
which sits between Kaiapoi and Rangiora,
is set to receive classrooms manufactured
offsite in time for term two, with the hall
scheduled for later in the year.
Board of trustees chairperson Charlie
Agi said the build has taken years of
planning.
The first stage of Oxford Area School’s
rebuild was completed at the beginning of
this year. The new Takurua building with
six new teaching spaces, an administration
area and library. Funding for the next
stage in the redevelopment will be
reconsidered next year, Ms Orr said.
Kaiapoi North School needs at least one
new classroom to cater for roll growth next
year. Tuahiwi, Woodend and Kaiapoi
North schools are all in the Kaiapoi High
School zone.
The high school was rebuilt in 2017 with
acapacity of 1100 pupils and the school’s
master plan allows for further expansion.
The school roll reached 1080 this year,
but Ms Orr said there were no plans for any
more building projects. ‘‘The Ministry will
continue to monitor trends in inzone roll
to determine when additional capacity will
be required.’’
Loburn School has also had amakeover,
the Ministry’s head of property,
infrastructure and digital, Sam Fowler
said. He said the school has refurbished
and upgraded its existing facilities to cater
for roll growth. But there are no new
building projects planned.
NC RESULTS
Fifty years of service to students at
Rangiora High School were celebrated
last week when the school recognised
the dedication and commitment of
smallbore rifle shooting coach Ross
McQueen.
Ross started coaching and mentoring
students in 1974 when the Rangiora
Smallbore Rifle Club was invited to help
students learn about shooting and
firearms safety.
‘‘For them to undertake the courses,
we (the club) needed to have amember
who was arange safety officer on site
whenever they were there and that’s
how it all started,’’ Ross says.
Now, 50 years later, Ross continues to
facilitate the training of agrowing
number of future shooting champions at
Rangiora High School.
Samantha Plows, aformer student and
now alaw and science student at the
University of Canterbury, says she was a
very ‘‘woundup kid’’ at school.
Through her participation in the small
bore shooting group, she learned to calm
down.
‘‘He was an incredible support over
the years Iwas shooting, and competing.
‘‘He helped me to overcome my fears,
as he showed me how the patience and
concentration needed to shoot well
would calm me down, he’s an amazing
person.’’
Finishing her last year at Rangiora,
champion shooter Georgyna Orchard,
says Ross is an inspiring man who offers
massive support.
‘‘He is my number one supporter and
is always very helpful.’’
The teacher in charge of shooting,
Anna Commons, says she is proud to
work alongside Ross.
‘‘For an impressive 50 years, Ross has
dedicated himself to the betterment of
Canterbury News, December 12, 2024
Apioneer who turned water into wine
For Waipara local John McCaskey creating wine from water was probably one of his more eyebrow-raising farming ventures.
But his vision nearly 50 yearsago was instrumental in placing the North Canterbury region on the global wine-producing map.
John has been recognised for his lifetimecontribution to irrigation in New Zealand, receiving aspecial commendation as part of the 2024
Zimmatic Trailblazer Sustainable Irrigation Awards.
John is apioneer of Waipara in the
Hurunui District about one hour north of
Christchurch.
While he downplays his impact, it was
his determination and innovation from the
1960’s onwards that helped cement the
district as agrapegrowingregion.
John, like his father, knew that water was
the key to unlocking the potential of the
district’s arid soils.
When he finally bought the family farm
from his father in 1968, the first thing he
wanted to do was get the water flowing and
grow different crops.
John has lived all his life in Waipara. His
first brush with irrigation was crawling
along tunnels his father dug on their farm
to divert the Weka Creek as he prepared to
install what would be the region’s first
irrigation system.
‘‘It was 1945 and my father almost had
the system ready to go when ahuge
snowstorm hit, followed by flooding, and it
washed away all the headworks.
‘‘He gave up after that,’’ says John.
When John took over, just like his father,
he could also see the potential to diversify
away from sheep and arable farming.
In 1972, John set about digging awater
storage dam beside the family homestead.
‘‘I dug the dam and put apump in the
creek, then Ijumped on the tractor and dug
afurrow about 2km to the dam,’’ he says.
As the water flowed so did diversified
farming
John stood back and watched his
handiwork as the water flowed.
One of his first forays was into growing
tomatoes, encouraged by Lincoln
Horticulture guru Bob Crowder at the time.
He also grew successful trial plots of
sudax, sorgum, maize and broad beans.
He proudly recalls yielding 33 tonnes of
tomatoes off just two acres of land.
However, the closure of local processing
facilities ended that chapter.
Not one to be deterred, John turned his
attention to viticulture. Inspired by atrip to
Australia, he began planting grapes in
4x44
Centre and
Automotive Repairs
AA Certified Repairer
At home... John McCaskey with his grand, storage plan for Lake Sumner.
Waipara, aregion traditionally dominated
by wool and lamb farming.
‘‘I could see the similarities between the
wine region of Mildura and Waipara, but
there were certainly afew raised eyebrows
at the time,’’ says John.
Initially, his grapes were just another
farming crop established during what John
says was almost nonexistent farming
income heavily impacted by the political
direction of ‘Rogernomics’.
‘‘When we started planting grapes
everyone expected the whole lot to fall
over,’’ he says.
But by 1982 the Glenmark Irrigation
Scheme was established and John’s grapegrowing
endeavours expanded.
By1986, he had established Glenmark
Winery in an old hay barn. Over 21 years,
John’s wines won an impressive 51 awards.
‘‘Some locals thought Iwas mad,’’ he
says. ‘‘There had been some
experimentation in the 1960s but nothing
had really taken off. But withproper
irrigation, we had the foundation for a
thriving industry.’’
John’s influence on Waipara extends
beyond farming. He has played akey role
in the community, participating in local
amateur theatre and charitywork, and
even helping to build the local hall and
school swimmingpool.
He was also the local chairmanof
Federated Farmers and stood for
Parliamentin1972 and 1987 and several
times from 1990 onwards.
‘‘For me, it’s always been about
communityand that community spirit.
That’s what places like Waipara are
founded on,’’ says John.
The Waipara district now produces
awardwinninggrapes famed for their
Pinot Noir, Riesling,and Chardonnay.
What was John’s family farm is now
surrounded by vineyards from Omihi to
just north of Amberley.
John’s early years of establishing and
managing irrigation on the family farm
were not without challenges. John explains
that the labourintensive systems that were
prone to breakages were nothing like the
precision machines of irrigation today.
Hevividly remembers working with side
rolls, which often succumbedtothe
elements. ‘‘They were hard work and very
wind prone. You’d end up with broken
pipes and they weren’t at all efficient,’’ he
says.
Over the years, John has witnessed a
massive shift in the irrigation industry.
Living on a42hectare block that he
subdividedfrom the original family farm,
he reflects on how much easier farming
would have been if the precision irrigation
technology available today had existed
back when he was actively farming.
He believes the advancements have not
only made irrigation less labourintensive
but have also improvedthe quality of crop
production.
‘‘The new irrigators are athing of beauty
and so accurate with delivering water in
the right place at the right time. Iwish they
were around when Iwas young,’’ says John.
He is acutely aware of the growing
sustainability challengesfacing our
primary sector and the increasing need for
efficient water management. Always
thinking outside the box, John believes he
has asolution to ensure asecure and
sustainable water supply for the Waipara
region
He has taken modeling of Lake Sumner
incorporating the catchment of the south
branch of the Hurunui which feeds the
district’s tributaries. He believes with some
innovative engineering it could be used as
astorage lake for irrigation, but his plans
and hopes have yet to gain traction.
‘‘I think new ideas are the key. You have
to keep trying new things, keep being
innovative,population growth and global
warming will demand it. That’s how our
industry will continue grow and hopefully,
thrive.’’ John hopes the recognition he’s
received from the TrailblazerAwards will
spark and inspire afew other young people
with ambition. ‘‘For anyone with some
ideas that might raise afew eyebrows, I
hope it might make them think; well, he’s
done it, maybe Ican too.’’
AKaiapoi Golf Club competition,
based on aPar3 contest held
before the Masters Tournament
at Augusta, Georgia, inthe
United States, has raised $2000
for Hato Hone St John.
The Sunday, November 24,
competition was afundraiser for
the ambulance and health care
services charity, and something
different for the club.
It was organised by its
president Jack Oldridge.
The Par3 contest was followed
by anovelty Par3 shootout.
There were three men's teams
and one women's team
competing.
The women’s winner of the Par
3contest was Di Smith with a
score of 61, and Tui Samau won
the men’s senior section with a
belowparscore of 52.
Club captain, Sean Regan said
afield of 72 players took part in
the Par3 contest, with one team
of four players on each fairway
moving around the 18 fairways.
‘‘Red markers were placed on
all fairways between 80 and 140m
from eachgreen.
‘‘They were not all placed in
easy spots.
‘‘One had alarge water hazard
in front of it, two were placed in
the rough, and the tee off for the
18th green was placed on the tee
block of the second green,’’ he
said.
The idea for the funfilled
shootout competition came from
Mario Trnjanin.
‘‘He borrowed the idea from
the Phoenix Open tournament
where spectators on one Par3
break all of the rules of golf.
‘‘Where silence and respect are
the norm, they make as much
noise as they can supporting or
upsetting the players teeing off.
‘‘We had alot of noise, ums and
ahs around the 18,’’ Sean said.
The club’s main sponsor for the
day was Kaiapoi Kats Tyres, with
The Stirling Retirement Village,
which provided abarbecue at the
ninth green, and Kaiapoi New
Woodford Glen Speedway anniversary marked in style
By JOHN COSGROVE
WoodfordGlen Speedway Association
celebrated its 50th anniversarywith a
packedout evening of highstakes
speedway racing last weekend.
Leading the celebrations was the launch
of the history book penned by founding
member Lindsay Richards.
The 230page book covering the history of
the track from its founding in 1974 to today,
contains over 600 photos and stories about
all the personalities involved in speedway
racing over the past 50 years.
‘‘I am indebted to families such as the
Petersen and Parkhills, who kept hundreds
of detailed scrapbooks covering all the
racing here,’’ says Lindsay.
‘‘They and many others kept the history
of the speedway alive, stored all the
minutes of the meetings held here, kept in
good condition all the programmes and the
media cuttings. It made my job as the writer
of the association's history so much easier.’’
He says for every hour spent writing,
there were three hours of research.
‘‘There's over 160,000 words in the book
and we have printed 1000 copies. At the
launch function, we sold 160 copies and
then alot more went on Saturday night at
the anniversaryrace meeting held at the
speedway.’’
Lindsay said Saturday, December 7, was
the actual start date in 1974, and to have the
anniversarymeeting on the same date 50
years later couldn't have worked out any
better.
Fellow founding member Doug Smith
says he and others spent many hours
building the track on the outskirts of
Kaiapoi all those years ago.
‘‘I was racing at Templeton when Iwas
asked to move to Woodford Glen to help
kick start racing there.
‘‘The track was professionally designed
so we were the labour and contractors who
built it and got it all started.
WoodfordGlen got its name from the first
owners Errol Inwood and Ron Rutherford,
who opened the speedway in 1974.
Fun night ... Ken Squire of Nelson drove his 1974 225 Valiant in the historic race at the
50thanniversary celebrations at Woodford Glen.
The Woodford Glen Speedway
Association (the club) purchased the
business in the early 1980s and continues to
run national championshiplevel super
stock, super saloon, street stock and
minisprint races.
Doug says the racing has been good since
the first races.
‘‘It’s all about the passion people have for
thissport, the families whose fathers, sons
and now grandsons and daughters continue
to support the club.’’
