Welcome!

from the Principal

As we approach the

end of the Autumn

term and the end of

2024, I am delighted,

as always, to be able

to share so many

successes with you to

celebrate the life of

Thurston Community

College and Thurston

Sixth.

As you will know from your children, and

hopefully from following us on social media and

reading our emails and letters, there is a lot

going on with trips, sports fixtures, performing

arts events and clubs. This is all in addition to the

daily life of the College with engaging lessons

across the curriculum, tutors and pastoral teams

working to support the wellbeing of all of our

students.

None of this could happen without our hard

working team of teachers and associate staff

who often go above and beyond expectations,

both individually and collectively, to ensure that

our young people have the best experience at

the College.

We continue to strive for even better things and

as we begin 2025 we will be reminding all

students of our expectations, in school, in

classrooms and around the site, ensuring that

they are focused for learning and that all of our

young people feel confident in our community to

be able to learn and thrive here at TCC. We thank

you for your ongoing support of what we are

trying to build here at TCC for all of our young

people, the collaboration between home and

school is crucial in achieving future success.

I wish you and your families a happy and restful

Christmas and we hope that 2025 brings

happiness and success for everyone in our

College community.

We welcome students back on Monday 06

January 2025 in a Week 2 timetable.

News from the Thurston

Sixth Student Union

Hello all and welcome to the TCC Student News

article. Today we are going to explore our school

and the Student Leadership Team. First, we have

our Student and Deputy Student Principals

talking about their progress and what they are

doing to make our school the best it can be.

Then we will go to Mrs Webdale to find out what

our Junior Prefects have been up to.

which shall affect us very positively for years to

come.

The Junior Prefects have been working hard over

the term too, under the leadership of Mrs

Webdale. The Junior Prefects assisted with the

Gatehouse collection by carrying donation boxes

which were collected from tutors who took part

in the reverse advent calendar. Gatehouse is a

charity based in Bury St Edmunds who lend a

helping hand in communities across West Suffolk

and Thurston Community College has

contributed by running the reverse advent

calendar for at least 5 years, if not more. The

items from the reverse calendar are being

donated to families who are in desperate need

this Christmas. On the 18th of December, the

Junior Prefects are also hosting an awards

ceremony for a group of primary school students

who entered a creative writing competition in the

TCC Library from 4-5pm. All the entries will be

read and then the winners and runner ups will

be awarded prizes; hot chocolate and biscuits

will be served on site. Additionally, on parents

evening, the Junior Prefects were handing out

drinks and snacks and directing families around

the school. In conclusion, the Junior Prefects are

kind, helpful and valuable people whose work

around school is incredibly useful and beneficial

to our community.

There has been lots of progress within not only

the Student Leadership Team, but also our

school community. Much of the credit for this

can go to our recently voted in Student

Principals, Beau and Ellie with a lot of help from

the Deputy Student Principals, Emilia and Mary.

Although they have only been in for one school

term they have made tremendous progress and

effort to help improve the school and its student

experience. To start with, they have said that

they have now implemented signs into the

maths block toilets as well as chasing up

improving the field’s new football nets.

Furthermore, they are pushing to make changes

regarding completing the promises made in their

manifestos. They are doing this by chasing

teachers up on ways to install their ideas which

we as students wanted and still want to happen.

Beau and Emilia are soon to meet with Mr

Mulcahy to discuss the rules and changes to

homework while Mary and Ellie are meeting with

Mr Horne to try and coordinate and share their

thoughts on a late policy to try and remove Now you've heard about everything to do with

stress from many students and also to

potentially add in a new rewards system. It is fair We’ve done it all in such little time in our winter

to say that they are extremely passionate about term - if we have managed to do this in 14 weeks

making changes for the benefit of our college we can't wait to see what we can accomplish

before the end of the year and what further

Joining Our Community

Transition Coordinator’s Message

As autumn has turned to winter, our focus has turned to celebration and

festivities in the transition team:

Most recently, we have had some beautiful submissions to the TCC

Community Creative Writing Competition around the theme of 'The

Unexpected Gift'; it's been lovely to see our local Year 5 and 6 students

sharing their creative talents with us and we look forward to celebrating with

many of our entrants at our awards ceremony over a cup of hot chocolate

and festive treat or two before the term ends.

I've also enjoyed further visits to Year 6s in their own classrooms alongside some of our

Junior Prefects to talk to the students about their exciting last chapter at primary school as

well as exploring some of the highlights they can look forward to once they make the move

to secondary school next year. By completing a growth mindset activity and answering lots

of burning questions, we're already seeing some of those nerves turn to excitement.

Opportunities to join us here at TCC for U9 and U11 sporting events have continued with Will

Hopkin-Jones and the Gipping Valley and Thurston School Sport Partnership. Dodgeball has

been the most recent tournament and our Sports Hall was packed with enthusiastic, very

focused teams ready to battle it out while some of their families joined me for rather a more

relaxed time in some of our PE classrooms just next door where we could talk about primary

school and transition over a few refreshments, keeping a keen eye on the competition raging

next to us!

With Christmas on the horizon, many of our larger Year 7 primary cohorts have been

involved with sending Christmas wishes back to their Year 5 and 6 teachers to share how

they're getting on here at TCC; the photo shoots for the cards was utterly festive and full of

happy memories with primary school pals.

We look forward now to events in the new year: 2025 is just around the corner and it will

bring my move into a new role as Year Leader for our next group of Year 7s; I look forward to

getting to know our current Year 6s more, both in their own classrooms and by inviting them

here to TCC to start to get to know us better too. 2025 will also bring plenty of opportunities

for both our Year 5 and 6 community to join us for events such as matinee performances of

our big shows, 'We Will Rock You' and 'Annie', as well as an exciting collaborative project in

connection with former TCC staff member, Clarissa Grandi and her inspiring 'Artful Maths'.

We hope our main feeder primary schools enjoyed

their Christmas cards, which featured students who

were in their Year 6 classes last year!

Year 7

Head of Year’s Message

Year 8

Head of Year’s Message

As we approach the first Christmas Holiday for year 7, we reflect on an amazing

first term for the year group. It is great to see how well they have settled into their

routines and when I have spoken to many across the year group, they feel very

much a part of the community here at TCC.

We have many things to celebrate this term. Firstly, the whole year group

participated in the "Last Choir Standing" which I was blown away by every

student joining in and being part of each song and dance performance on the

stage. Throughout the term, we have had success on the sports front with both

our football teams and netball teams doing really well and competing against

other schools. The sporting experience will continue the final week of term with the year 7's first

ever House Matches where they will compete in Football, Netball, Handball and Lineball to see

who is the strongest House!

Each tutor group was brilliant in creating their reverse advent calendar for the Gatehouse charity

and every contribution from each student will mean a lot to someone in need this Christmas. On

the Christmas theme, we had over 250 students taking part in the Christmas dinner celebrations

where there was lots of eating, singing, dancing and a Christmas quiz!

Recently we had an assembly on showing gratitude and students were able to take a card to give

to someone they wanted to show their appreciation to and it was lovely to see so many students

take the cards and give these to friends and teachers across the school.

In the last week of term, we have had the pleasure to receive so many applications to be the

Head of Year 7 and to be part of the student leadership team. Mr Scarfe and Mrs Dunsdon were

able to interview 19 students who all showed such a high level of maturity and interest in the roles

and we will be looking to inform them all of their different roles moving forward to support student

voice and support in the year group.

All of this will be celebrated in a final End of Term celebration assembly on the final day of term.

This will allow us to acknowledge the hard work and efforts made by so many students this term.

To give you all an amazing statistic that year 7 has been awarded over 38, 500 House points

across this first term which is OUTSTANDING! We very much hope this momentum is carried

forwards into the Spring term after Christmas.

Wow! Another amazing half term for the Year 8s.

Academically, it is so lovely to see different students each week on the house

point leader board; it shows just how hard they are working in lessons.

Pastorally, uniform, jewellery and phones are still a concern with some students

and this will continue to be our focus in the new year. As a personal plea, we

would like to recommend that if your child has something that is valuable or

sentimental, you encourage them to keep these items safe at home, as they

risk being broken, lost or, if being used inappropriately, confiscated.

Last week we had our Christmas meal and with the exception of a handful, the whole year group

enjoyed a beautiful meal. There were lots of cheers, laughter and it was fabulous to see a few

singing and even dancing! This is particularly exciting to hear, as we have a couple of fabulous

songs for the year group to sing in our Celebration Assembly!

The TCC house system is now fully underway and in our final assembly we will be looking at

which house will be our first winner! Two of the key activities this term which contribute to the

winner are the Taskmaster Challenge and the Inter House sports day. The Taskmaster theme was

to capture a moment that demonstrates you having the most festive fun and I have to say we

have a worthy winner! All students participate in some way or other in the intersports competition,

featuring a number of different sports. To really increase the tension, these are taking place this

week! It was wonderful to see the tutor groups getting into their houses and signing up! It

created a really encouraging team spirit!

We are so incredibly proud of our Year 8s. It's been an incredibly long term, they have just

finished their assessment window and they are so tired. Despite this, they remain so positive and

cheerful!

We’re so looking forward to seeing their progress and adventures in the new year!

Have a fabulous, safe holiday.

Ms Osborne - Head of Year 8

Both myself and Mr Scarfe wish you all an amazing and well earned Christmas break and a

Happy New year and will look forward to seeing you all in January!

Mr Chubb - Head of Year 7

Congratulations to our Year 8 Netball team, who won 9 - 0

against Breckland School this term.

Year 9

Head of Year’s Message

Year 10

Head of Year’s Message

Well this marks the end of the first term with this lovely bunch. It has been a long

one but we have certainly finished on a high with these last couple of weeks.

I continue to be impressed with the kindness and general spirit of the year group

and how much they can come together.

Sporting Success

I would firstly like to acknowledge the sporting success of the Year group this

last half term. We have had football success, for both boys and girls, Netball,

and Badminton to name a few. We are also wishing Ruby in 9B all the best as she represents

Great Britain in the Tchoukball Team Championships over in Geneva this weekend. We are very

proud of you Ruby! We are also very proud of the amazing Year 9 Dance academy which has a

record number of members across Year 9, who have been working amazingly hard for the Winter

Showcase and beyond. It was so great to see so many of you up on that stage!

Spreading a little Appreciation

Last week I challenged Year 9 to spread some more kindness through our Appreciation assembly.

They were tasked with sharing their appreciation with family, friends and staff. It was so lovely

seeing the positive impact this had on staff who had received a card.

Spreading some Christmas Cheer

We have certainly played our part in spreading some Christmas cheer including amazing

contributions to the Gatehouse reverse advent calendar as well as taking on the Taskmaster

challenge to make decorations and embrace the festive cheer.

My favourite part of this week though, has got to be the amazing Year 9 Christmas dinner we had.

Over 150 students joined in with amazing spirit. We had a lovely Christmas dinner, wearing our

festive attire while enjoying our table decorating competition and our Christmas Quiz. Well done

to the boys and their amazing light up Christmas tree and the girls and their festive drawings

which certainly brightened the room.

The new year will bring new choices, new opportunities and I am sure many more successes and

positive experiences. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year as well as a very well

deserved break.

Ms Allcock - Head of Year 9

As we approach the end of the

first full term of the academic

year and reflect upon what our

students have achieved since

joining year 10, I feel

incredibly proud and inspired

by our year group. Not only

have year 10 shown

incredible maturity and

commitment to their GCSE

study, they have also made many positive

contributions to our community, including

welcoming new students, organising collections

for our Gatehouse charity hampers and taking

part in a wide range of extra curricular activities.

Year 10 students are now fully settled into their

GCSE courses and I could not be more proud of

the calm and focused atmosphere I see when I

visit lessons. The vast majority of year 10

continue to make the effort to get it right every

single day and we are thankful for the excellent

behaviour and attitude they display.

I would like to say a special well done to

everyone who has worked hard to secure a

work experience placement as well as complete

their Unifrog placement form; almost half of the

year group now have work experience

organised and finalised for the week of May

19th - 23rd. The work experience process

reflects the reality of applying for a job and

therefore has presented many of the real life

challenges that applying for employment can

bring. I am impressed by the resilience, maturity

and perseverance that year 10 students have

demonstrated throughout this process and I

have no doubt that they are going to make

excellent contributions when the week of 19th

May arrives. The deadline for work experience

to be finalised, including all paperwork to be

signed off on Unifrog, is February 14th. For

anyone who is struggling to find or secure a

placement, remember the Careers Hub is open

every break and lunchtime for students to drop

in; whether they still need help finding a

placement or need help with an application, Mrs

Atkins and Mrs Johnson are on hand to support

them.

number of our year group danced, sang, played

musical instruments and acted on stage, in front

of large audiences, showing off a range of talent

and teamwork. It was particularly lovely to see

so many of our year group in the audience,

supporting and cheering on their friends - year

10, you really epitomise the team work we strive

for at Thurston.

We have also seen many sporting successes

this term with the U15 Netball team recently

beating County High School. Mrs Caswell said:

“The girls were AMAZING and won 15-4.” Our

girls football team also won 3-2 in their match

against King Edwards. Well done girls!

A special thank you to our student leadership

team who have been working hard to run our

school council, keep us updated through the

news team, support our younger students and

represent the voice of their form group; they

play such a vital role in ensuring our school is a

happy environment and we are very grateful for

the time and effort which they put into this.

Our Christmas lunch last Friday saw almost 150

students joining in with Christmas celebrations

in the school canteen, where we ate a

Christmas dinner, sang songs and danced -

year 10 showed us again what a fantastically

fun year group they are. We wish all of our year

10 students a restful and fun break with their

families and friends. I am already excited for

2025 and to see where the rest of the year will

take us.

Year 11

Head of Year’s Message

Once again our Year 11s have impressed us this term with their dedication and

commitment to their studies but also their involvement in #TCCLife. It always

strikes me how, as the senior students of the school, and with so many demands

of their time academically, our students still manage to be fully involved in all

aspects of life at Thurston. There is no doubt that the focus on preparing for

exams is paramount but our students have also managed to immerse themselves

in other activities.

Year 11 had, what felt like at times, a never-ending first mock exam session in

October and into the first week of November. It was evident that the summer

exams at the end of Year 10 had prepared them with what to expect from the logistics of the

exams, but I was impressed with their positive approach to the demands of this set of exams,

impeccable conduct from the majority of our students, setting exemplary standards and

impressing our invigilation team with their exam etiquette. For our next set of mock exams coming

up in February our focus will be on ensuring that these standards are upheld, particularly our

uniform requirements. I am sure that our students will be pleased with the results they have

already received and they are already working hard with their teachers to identify areas for

improvement in preparation for the upcoming mocks next term.

Our students have also been busy exploring Post-16 opportunities with many attending our Sixth

Form Open Evening at our Thurston Sixth Beyton Campus. We have also welcomed visitors from

college providers such as West Suffolk College and Suffolk New College, as well as other

providers such as Needham Market FC Academy. We hope to be able to provide more

opportunities for our students to explore Post -16 education and employment opportunities next

term. Students have been exceptionally proactive at submitting their applications, working with

our Careers Team, Mrs Johnson and Miss Atkins, to get their applications organised.

In amongst all of this our students have also been involved in collecting their Reverse Advent

Calendars for the Gatehouse Charity, taking part in enrichment opportunities and beginning to

organise their Leavers events. Our sports teams have had success in both netball and football

fixtures, our many talented performers have participated in both the Musical Theatre Showcase

and the Winter Showcase sharing their music, acting and dance skills, students have taken part in

quizzes and House competitions in tutor time and our Prom Committee have organised ‘Candy

Christmas’ raising funds towards their Prom at the end of this year which has been incredibly

popular with students from all years. Our Student Leadership Team continue to work hard,

gathering student voice and acting upon their fellow students behalf. I know that our students will

continue to be fully involved in all aspects of school life next term, alongside their exam

preparations.

Thurston Sixth

Head of Sixth Form’s Message

It has been another busy half term at our Beyton campus. It has been a pleasure to

welcome parents and students along to our in-person consultation evenings, as well

as meeting and interviewing a number of prospective Sixth Form students who will be

joining us in September 2025. We are looking forward to meeting more of you in the

new year!

Our year 13 students have been busy completing applications for post-18 options. A

number of students have already been successful in securing offers. These include

places to study on degree courses at universities such as York, Edinburgh, St

Andrews, Leeds, Exeter and Imperial College. One of our students has secured offers

for golf scholarships at seven colleges in the United States. We also have a number of students that

have been offered places on apprenticeship and degree apprenticeship programmes in fields such as

insurance and civil engineering.

Alongside continued hard work and progress in the classroom, we have hosted a variety of events this

half term. In November, the Hall was converted into a sports court illuminated by UV lights to hold a

highly competitive dodgeball tournament. At the start of December, Politics students Lily, Joe, Harry,

Rhys and James hosted the ‘Crisis Games’. Around 40 Year 12 and 13 students put their skills of

diplomacy and negotiation to the test. The conference centre was buzzing with negotiations as teams

representing different countries navigated a variety of world events.

Our Student Union has been busy planning a variety of festive events. Last week, students and staff

donned their Christmas jumpers to fundraise for Save the Children. This week, we are hosting our

Christmas lunch, music performances, charity bingo, jolabokaflod and a Christmas quiz to complete the

final week of term.

As we look ahead to next term, the countdown is on to the UCAS application deadline and also the first

of our international trips. Twenty of our students will be departing for Panama at February half term,

ready to put their Spanish speaking skills to the test and immerse themselves in a new culture.

I am extremely proud of the way in which our students have developed this term, working with a

positive attitude and setting an example to our younger students. I hope that the Christmas

holiday will offer the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends, and take a well earned break

from studies, ready to return in the New Year for even bigger and better things!

Enrichment

Outside The Classroom

Recently Thurston Community College was asked to contribute to the magazine “Learning Outside the

Classroom Yearbook”. The publication is read widely by all those in the world of education with a

passion for ensuring young people have the opportunity to take part in visits and residential trips over

the course of their school years. The college is committed to the development of our enrichment

programme. We offer subject based visits to support the learning taking place in the classroom and for

every year group we now offer a residential visit. The autumn term has seen our students going off to

multiple places of interest both locally in Suffolk and in London.

This term in review

WATCH: Griff from Student News finds out what Ms Taylor gets up to over

Christmas and learns about her highlights from this term.

In the Spring term our students will continue to be offered fantastic opportunities to journey to locations

and settings of interest within this country, alongside residential visits overseas. Many of our main school

Year 11 GCSE History students have signed up to go to the Battlefields of the Somme, Belgium. Then

we also have 20 of our Thurston Sixth students off to Panama on what will be an experience of a

lifetime. The College has been successful in securing funding from the Turing Scheme such that we

have been able to offer heavily subsidised places not only for student to go to Panama but also in May

2025 a further 20 students from Thurston Sixth will be off to Thailand. Over the past 4 years our Post-16

students have been to Nepal, Cambodia and Tanzania; who knows which destinations might be on the

cards for 2026! Watch this space!

Science Club at TCC

Here at the college we look to enrich the

experience of our students through a whole variety

of different practical activities both within the

classroom environment and outside of timetabled

lessons. These activities involve Science clubs,

events and visits. One of the Science clubs is

aimed at the younger age group, the eleven and

twelve year old students. The experience within the

Science Department builds upon the foundations

established during the students’ primary school

years; offering them further opportunities to gain

those hands-on activities and try some

experiments from outside of the general

curriculum. This autumn, our students have had a

fabulous time making their own cheese, plastics

and slime. By the end of the term they will have

learnt about the science behind fireworks and

you’ve guessed it - they will also have completed

some very Christmassy science activities!

Raffy writes: “Science Club is a club that you can

always look forward to on Wednesdays. With fun

experiments to do using microscopes; creating

cheese and making plastic. These are just some of

the things we have done. Miss Rolfe runs the club

and she is a great teacher, who always has a smile

on her face. It is in room 204 and it starts straight

after school and ends at 4:40pm.”

Laura writes: “Science Club is exciting as you do

lots of cool stuff and new experiments that we

haven’t done in class. So far, we have made slime,

plastic and cheese using Bunsen Burners. We

have looked at our own cheek cells using a

microscope. We also got to use the microscopes to

look at other microscopic things because we had

lots of time to do so.”

I am sure you will enjoy reading the words of these

two very enthusiastic students. Both are

exceedingly precise in their level of detail; a skill

which will set them in good stead should they

choose to pursue a future career within the field of

science.
