TOP TOWN! IT’S OFFICIAL

Berkhamsted is the Best Place to

Live in the southeast of England,

according to The Sunday Times.

The newspaper’s Best Places

to Live 2018 supplement

said: ‘Berkhamsted is affl uent

and attractive.’ It highlighted

Berkhamsted School, the ‘medieval

town centre’ with chic shops and

great places to eat and easy access

to Ashridge and the Chilterns.

Unlike many commuter towns,

it said, Berkhamsted boasted an

increasing number of genuinely

independent shops.

The guide stated: ‘Berko’s crowning

glory, however, has to be the Rex,

a luxurious art deco cinema with

swivel armchairs and a drinks bar. It

sells out every night.’

● Nearby Wendover was also

commended in the guide: ‘On the

edge of the Chilterns [Wendover]

is the fi rst real gasp of fresh air

north of the capital: London

Marylebone is a reliable 50mins

away. Take your pick of Wendover

Woods, canal paths or the Chiltern

Way, for views across the Vale of

Aylesbury to Chequers.’

LAND DONATION AT

BERKHAMSTED

CASTLE

It dates back hundreds of years to 1066 – but

Berkhamsted Castle’s grounds are now bigger

thanks to the donation of adjoining land by

leading pharmaceutical company Mallinckrodt.

The company had owned the land to the east

of Berkhamsted Castle for 50 years following a

business acquisition. But on 11 May, at an offi cial

handing-over ceremony, the company donated

the land to the Berkhamsted Castle Trust,

along with a cheque for £25,000 to help with

maintenance and promotion of the site.

Adrian Barham, Chairman of Berkhamsted Castle

Trust, said: ‘Mallinckrodt’s donation allows us to

present the Castle site as a whole, as originally

intended, whilst its generous funding will allow

us to ensure that this site of major historical

signifi cance can be enjoyed by generations to

come.’

‘Sprocket, eight, vanished during a break in at the

home of James Stewart, 53, in Berkhamsted, Herts,

‘It’s the 30s, velveteen glamour and brilliant

or Finchley’s Phoenix that pulls me in.’

The Guardian, 31 March 2018

‘Berkhamsted is often overlooked in favour of

Hertfordshire’s highest-profi le commuter location, St

Albans, but is better value, and is the gateway to the

beautiful Chiltern Hills.

The Ashridge Estate, run by the National Trust, is on

the doorstep, and the town centre has a good range

LITTER

FRONTLINE

REACHES A41

Littering drivers are

responsible for a

staggering eight tonnes

of rubbish along the A41.

In a week-long campaign

in March, a 20-strong crew from the borough council

collected masses of rubbish including coffee cups, bottles

and take-away containers. They cleaned up along the

slip-roads, junctions, verges and the central reservation

from the M25 to the Buckinghamshire boundary.

A Keep Britain Tidy national survey has revealed that

litter in the UK could be killing over 3m shrews, voles

and mice each year. Litter also harms larger animals, with

the RSPCA dealing with an animal killed or injured by

litter every two hours.

Dacorum Borough Council asks you to report litter or

fl y-tipping by visiting www.dacorum.gov.uk/litter. There is

now a £200 fi xed penalty fi ne for littering from a vehicle;

it pays to take your rubbish home.

EARTH DAY TARGET

Oakman Inns aims to phase

out single-use plastics within

a year.

The pub, restaurant and

hotel chain has pledged to

banish single-use plastics

by Earth Day 2019 – 22

April. Oakman runs

the Kings Arms in

Berkhamsted, the

Akeman in Tring and

the Red Lion in Water End among

others across the south of England and the Midlands.

Peter Borg-Neal, Oakman Inns’ CEO, said: ‘Oakman has

a reputation for leading the way and, to a certain extent,

it’s now up to us to show what can be done with the

support of all our stakeholders, including our suppliers.’

PLASTIC PLEA

Two petitions with

a single aim – to

reduce plastic waste

in Berkhamsted –

are looking for your

support.

The fi rst calls on Waitrose and Tesco to start using

compostable bags for loose fruit and vegetables in store.

The second, launched in April, broadens the attack,

asking that Berkhamsted Town Council reduce its plastic

consumption and support efforts to make Berkhamsted

free of single-use plastic by 2020.

The group Plastic-Free Berko is behind these initiatives. It

was started some months ago by Green Party members

Sue Hampton, Philippa Jones, Paul de Hoest and Joe Pitts,

in conjunction with Transition Town Berko.

‘Clearly, cutting plastic use entirely is a huge mountain

to climb,’ said Sue Hampton. ‘Instead, we’re calling for

smaller steps to be taken, such as reducing the use of

non-compostable coffee cups, and fruit and vegetable

bags.’

So far, local businesses have responded positively and

have agreed to look into switching to compostable cups.

Waitrose will ban the use of disposable cups entirely from

this autumn, while Oakman Inns’ response is reported on

page 8.

Plastic-Free Berko has many more ideas in the pipeline;

discussions on the possibility of opening a waste-free

scoop shop are in the early stages.

Meanwhile, the campaign needs your support. If you’d

like to fi nd out more go to the Plastic-Free Berko page on

Facebook or look for them on Twitter. You’ll fi nd lots of

simple ideas, including:

● Carrying cloth shopping bags

● Carrying reusable coffee cups

● Buying washable muslin bags to take to

supermarkets for loose fruit and veg

● Ordering fruit and veg from organic farmers

● Finding packaging-free cosmetics.

The paper for Berkhamsted Living is FSC certifi ed. We

are investigating alternatives for the plastic wrap.

BURGERMEISTER

A St Albans success

story has given

Berkhamsted a

new kind of burger

restaurant.

The Meating Room

opened in mid-May,

on the site of the New

Akash at 307-309 High St. It’s the second restaurant from

Al Hoque and Jamal Hussain, building on their success in

St Albans over the past four years.

‘The meat we use in our burgers is top quality,’ said Al.

‘Everything is made fresh; the burgers and the sauces

are handmade on-site that day, and the buns are made

using our own special recipe at a bakery in St Albans.

Customers there have told us our burgers are as good as

the top gourmet burger restaurants in London, and that’s

something we’re very proud of.’

Next door to the Meating Room, the Coffee Distillery

may be a coffee shop by day and a bar at night – details

are expected soon.

SPORT SUPPORT

A Berkhamsted

entrepreneur aims

to help women enjoy

exercise more with a

new type of sports bra.

Mari Thomas, a recent

Loughborough University

sports engineer graduate,

launched her start-up company as she believes current

sports bras don’t provide enough support.

The Maaree bra focuses on upward and downward

motion. Mari said: ‘Technical garments such as the sports

bra, if designed without forethought, can be a detriment

to our bodies and deter women from participating in

physical activity.’

The fi rst collection has been launched on Crowdfunder

and you can fi nd out more by visiting www.maaree.com.

JOY OF SOCKS

‘Where do I fi nd socks

that actually stay on

my child’s feet?’ Katie

Saunders faced a

problem familiar to

every parent and has

launched The Little Sock

Company to resolve it.

Katie said: ‘The idea came to me a few months after my

son Sidney was born. Lost socks, hanging off or digging in

are all sock problems parents deal with daily and I wanted

to use my skills and techniques to solve it.’

Katie’s day job as a lingerie designer revolves around

problem solving – trying to fi nd the balance between

comfort, fi t and design. A year on from the fi rst

prototype, the socks now feature a ‘stay-on’ feature and

silicon soles to prevent slipping.

LIONS CLUB OF BERKHAMSTED

The Lions Club of Berkhamsted celebrates 40 years of

community service in June 2018, but sadly this comes

at the same time as the Club has decided to disband.

Over the past few years the Club has found no shortage

of helpers for its community events, but it has been

increasingly diffi cult to fi nd members to organise these

events, and to undertake club roles such as Treasurer,

Secretary and President. Our members get one year

older each year and most are not as active as once

they were; new younger

members fi nd that family

and business commitments

are such that they don’t have

the time to get too involved

in Lions’ activities on a

continuing basis.

The August Bank Holiday

Fete is a casualty following

the closure of the Club.

The project aims to promote the remarkable history of

Berkhamsted, Northchurch and the area to local people

- not only the Castle and the Conqueror but also the

stories of individuals and of the landscape. The fi rst stage

will look at ways to engage people: family events, pop-up

exhibitions, art and drama, themed trails, information

points, workshops, social media and websites.

Mary Casserley, chair of the History Society, said: ‘We

welcome all your views and ideas. Please keep checking

our website: https://berkhamsted-history.org.uk.

BERKOFEST

Get your festival gear out

because Berkofest will be

taking place this summer.

Organiser Charlie Hussey

said the popular festival

was defi nitely going ahead

after months of doubt over

whether they could afford to put the show on.

Charlie said: ‘It’s happening now after lots of discussion –

and mainly with enormous thanks to B&M Care at Ashlyns

Hall who have let us use their grounds for free and have

even sponsored the event, as well as Berkhamsted School

who have offered further sponsorship. We’re so grateful.’

Although acts are yet to be announced the festival will be

going ahead on Saturday 8 September.

Charlie added: ‘‘Mainly what we need for this to continue

to go ahead every year is for people to buy tickets in

advance. and if we don’t sell enough advance tickets then

we can’t pay any of our acts, and we can even make a loss.’

VINTAGE

Events with a 40s theme are all the rage at the moment,

and over the summer there will be plenty of opportunities

to fl aunt your 40s look at vintage fairs and themed

weekends.

But how do you go about channelling your 40s fl air?

We asked Emma Treleaven, exhibitions assistant at Bletchley Park

Trust. Emma is also a fashion historian with a particular interest in the

styles of the decade. She regularly dresses in vintage style and has

helped staff at Bletchley Park, home of the wartime coders, to keep

their costumes authentic for the various period events held at the

park (see panel for details). The wartime era provides the context of

this feature.

Make do and mend

BACK TO THE

Take a step back in time and discover

how you can get the 40s look

For a start, suggests Emma, go through your own wardrobe for

clothes that can be adapted. ‘You need a straight skirt, nothing with

too much fabric. ‘Then fi nd a simple collared shirt, and some knitwear.

Colour work – a Fairisle patterned jumper for instance – is perfect.

‘This all ties in with the make-do-and-mend ethos of the war. It all

straight is what you need – short, fi tted and cropped

are late 40s/50s styles!’

Button up the shirt, tuck it into the pencil skirt, add a

pair of brogues and you’re good to go!

Naomi Glasser, owner of Berkhamsted’s Luminous &

Vogue, suggests: ‘Go as a Land Girl. It’s the easy way

to go – a short-sleeved shirt, trousers tucked into

boots – and you can have a scarf knotted on your

head, so you don’t need to worry about elaborate

hair!’

While Land Girls wore earthy colours, Emma says you

don’t need to be afraid of colour in 40s styles. ‘Most

people think the 40s were drab, but I think that’s

because all the photos are black and white! But there

were all sorts of colours – no neons though – and

patriotic red, white and blue were very popular.’

If you’re leaning towards a military uniform, it’s dark

blue or khaki skirts with shirts and matching ties,

along with fl at shoes. For men there are websites

such as Soldier of Fortune (www.sofmilitary.co.uk)

that sell reproduction uniforms.

Pin curls were really popular too, but you will need

to sleep in them and then brush them out the next

day. Victory Curls weren’t as popular as you might

imagine – they took a lot of work.

‘For make-up, steer clear of cats’ eyes – they are from

the 50s. Instead go for fresh-faced and glamorous

with the emphasis on lips and eyebrows,’ Emma

advises. A little eye shadow and mascara, plus some

matte lipstick are the order of the day.

Finishing touches should include stockings or tights

with seams up the back. Emma recommends cheap

Primark ones – or if you want to be really authentic,

look out for styles from vintage repro lingerie

company What Katy Did, which produces real 100%

nylon stockings made on the original 40s machines. ■

HOME &COLONIAL

Antiques & Inspiration

On Civvy Street, men wore straight, full trousers,

collars, wide ties, trilby and braces. Knitwear was also

popular, as were trench coats and wool overcoats.

Men should be clean-shaven or wearing a moustache.

If you’re shopping for 40s vintage ‘you can very

successfully fake it using 70s and early 80s clothes as

they had the same silhouettes,’ says Emma.

Hair and make-up

The devil’s in the detail, so getting your hair and makeup

right can really help to create that authentic look.

Head scarves were used a lot to protect the hair.

Emma explains: ‘They only washed hair once a week

and then it was set, so they used scarves to protect

the style.’ Scarves work best with casual clothes.

THE GREAT

OUTDOORS

Its good to get the kids out and about.

Here’s some inspiration for days

out some local and some

further afield.

When the sun shines the UK can be

a beautiful place to live. Here’s our

guide to go with the kids to get some

fresh air and exercise this summer,

all within an hour’s drive.

Whipsnade Zoo

Whipsnade, Dunstable LU6 2LF

all ages

£ from £16.60pp

A sprawling zoo spread over 600 acres,

Whipsnade is a lovely place to spend the day,

not least because, even on busy days it doesn’t

feel crowded. There are benches and tables for

picnics – you’ll be grateful at lunchtime when

the café gets packed. The wooden playground

is a triumph – there’s a section for younger

children and a larger fort-type section for the

older ones, while the indoor soft-play has a

strict booking system. Oh, and there are the

animals of course, including chimps, penguins,

elephants, lions, tigers and hippos, as well as the

lovely butterfl y centre. An adult day ticket is

£22.90 per adult, but

membership works

out cheaper if you

visit often.

www.zsl.org

Ashridge

Moneybury Hill, Ringshall HP4 1LX

all ages

£ free

It’s always lovely to spend some time up at Ashridge,

and the area round the Visitor Centre and Bridgewater

Monument is perfect for families. The Visitor Centre

has a shop and exhibition space, you can climb up the

Monument at certain times for a small charge of £2.50,

the Brownlow Café has plenty of seating outdoors, and

there’s ample parking and loos. The woodland trails are

mostly wheelchair

and buggy-accessible,

there’s a wooden

play area and space

for tree-climbing and

picnics.

Berkhamsted Castle

White Hill, Berkhamsted HP4 1HH

all ages

£ free

Slap bang in the middle of Berkhamsted, there’s

plenty of space to kick a football around, run about

and enjoy a picnic at Berkhamsted Castle. Just

remember a couple of things though – children are

NOT allowed to climb on the ancient walls, partly

for their own safety and partly because, well, the

walls are hundreds of years old and there won’t

be anything left at all if everyone climbs on them.

Second, there’s hardly any shade, so take a parasol or

arrive early to nab a spot in the shade of a wall. Oh,

and there are no

toilets so you’ll need

to make trips to the

loos in the nearby

railway station!

Pets’Corner

MUMMY! I

WANT AN

ALPACA

Forget cats and dogs – there’s a new pet in town and it may

be coming to a home near you

You’ve probably never even considered

having an alpaca as a pet – and why

would you? But there are plenty of

people who do, and you’d be surprised

how easy the animals are to look after.

Closely related to the llama, alpacas come from

the Andean high plains of west-central South

America, and live at altitudes of around 4,000m.

They’ve adapted surprisingly well to life at lower

altitudes in the UK. Generally hardy, healthy and

relatively easy to keep, they have become popular

as pets.

They are, however, herd animals and thrive in

the company of other alpacas. So you will need

space: as a rule of thumb, an acre of rough grazing

pasture supports four or fi ve alpacas.

They rarely jump, so net fencing just over a metre

high is enough - never use barbed wire. Alpacas live

outside most of the time but will need some form of

shelter in cold and wet weather.

A bonus for alpaca owners is the soft, luxurious

fl eece. This is one of the main reasons local alpacaowner

Pam Sangster keeps them. ‘I knit my own

clothes from the fl eece of my small herd,’ she says.

‘There’s nothing to compare to the soft, luxurious

feel of the clothing.’

If you want to fi nd out more, go to the British Alpaca

Society website – www.bas-uk.com.

Baby alert! How will

your dog react to

a new arrival?

How does bringing a new baby into

the family affect your four-legged

friend?

Local animal behaviour expert Hanne

Grice has spent the past

few months studying the subject for

her MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour

and Training.

‘I’ve spent years working with dogs

and cats, and over the years I’ve seen

how the arrival of a new baby can

affect a pet’s behaviour,’ Hanne says.

‘This is particularly striking in the case

of dogs, because they often go from

being ‘dog babies’ to being cast out of

the family to a certain extent.’

Hanne has conducted extensive

research. ‘There is little data about

this subject, so I’ve carried out my

own questionnaire and am currently

collating the results,’ she explains.

‘I’m looking at people who have a

dog and then have a baby, and the

effects it has, and whether people

seek help and advice before the baby

arrives, or whether problems arise

afterwards.

‘Often, behaviour that was always

there – jumping up or eating things

or stealing things – can become a

problem with the arrival of a baby.

Reduced levels of interaction with

the dog can also have an enormous

impact.

‘People often express guilt about

the lack of attention they’re giving

their pet after the arrival of a baby,

including grooming, walking and play.

‘I’m hoping that the results from this

study may offer insights for expectant

parents and young families that

encourage positive relationships

between dogs, owners and their

children and propose avenues

for further exploration into this

understudied area.’

With Your Dog is available from

Pets’Corner

START: Full Moon pub,

Cholesbury-Hawridge Common

ENDS: Full Moon pub,

Cholesbury-Hawridge Common

DISTANCE: 3.8 miles (6km)

ASCENT: 300ft (91m)

We hope you enjoy the first in our new series of dog-friendly local

walks. For full details go to the website www.livingmags.info

With thanks to George Edwards and his dog Meg

The walk involves a few stiles, all dog-friendly,

and a few fi elds with livestock. Paths are

generally well-marked but may be muddy.

The walk passes two Diamond Jubilee

memorials, a windmill (2) and an Iron Age hill fort.

With the permission of the landlord you could park

at the Full Moon pub (1), along the verge outside, in

the small car-park opposite the cricket pavilion (3)

where there is a dog bin or along the verge outside

Cholesbury Village Hall (4).

Walk towards Cholesbury Village Hall (4), noting the

two Diamond Jubilee memorials on the Common

between the Full Moon and cricket pavilion (3).

To the lefthand side of the Village Hall is a gate: go

through, following a wide track to the next two

gates, keeping the parish church on your left and

making for a wooded area straight ahead. There are

often horses in these fi elds, so keep your dog on a

lead.

Go through the gate into the wooded area which is

Cholesbury Camp (5), a 10-acre Iron Age hill fort

within an oval-shaped ditch. Cross the ditch and go

straight over on to a well-marked path through more

trees. Follow the path through the trees until you

reach a gate into a paddock where there are usually

several horses grazing, keep your dog on a lead here

until you reach Drayton Wood (6).

In Drayton Wood keep left just inside the wood,

with fi elds clearly visible beyond. At fi rst the path

is quite open, but the trees close in and the path

narrows as it twists around them.

The path comes out of the wood to a track crossing

left to right (7). Go left down the slope towards a

house on the right, into Little Twye Road, and follow

it as far as a group of houses on the right where

there is a marked path on your left across fi elds

towards Parrott’s Lane (8), which can be muddy.

When you reach Parrott’s Lane cross to the very

narrow path (9) to the right of Harvest House.

This reaches a wooden stile with a dog opening,

emerging into a fi eld which often has sheep in it.

Head to your right along a well-marked path close to

the fence, then through a stile with a dog gate in the

hedge (10). Keep right downhill, left of some houses,

to a metal gate in another hedge.

To your right is the delightfully named Broomstick

Lane; straight ahead a wooden fence crosses the

main path. Keep right, and before the wooden fence

go through another wooden gate in a hedge on to a

path in a nursery plantation.

Walkies

The puddingstone QE2 Diamond Jubilee memorial with the windmill and Full Moon pub in thebackground – PHOTO COURTESY OF GEORGE EDWARDS

This path bends to the left and uphill, eventually

reaching the Cholesbury-Buckland Common road

opposite Chiltern Motors garage (11). Cross the road

and down the track marked Chiltern Heritage Trail.

The path slopes down to an intersection of paths at

the start of a wooded area (12).

Turn left on the path that follows the edge of a fi eld.

It passes through a metal gate in a hedge into another

fi eld where there may be livestock. Keep the fence

on your left to an intersection of paths and metal

The Electrical

by Julie Mayhew

Published by Hot Key

Books, £7.99

I’ve been a fan of Julie’s writing

since her debut novel Red Ink in

2013, so I was looking forward

to reading her latest offering.

Each of Julie’s books has been so

different, with unusual themes

and interesting premises – and

this was no exception!

It tells the story of Mim and Alex,

two young people who perform

for a travelling sideshow fair in

Georgian England. Lowly Mim,

billed as the ‘Girl Exotic’ thanks

to fi nd her worth, while Alex

is a one-armed boxer. The pair

have known each other all their

lives but are only now, as teens,

starting to notice each other.

But then the arrival of Dr Fox

and his electrical trickery throws

everything apart, when he claims

Mim and she leaves the sideshow

to become ‘The Electrical Venus’,

offering electric-shock kisses for a

penny. Mim thinks what she and

Dr Fox have is love – but is it?

The narrative is unusual, as most

of the story is told through Mim

and Alex speaking to their animals

– a parrot called George in Mim’s

case, and a nameless pig for Alex.

But through their stories we see

loves, losses, growing up and

falling in love, all set on a most

unusual stage.

I really enjoyed this book, and

if you fancy something a little

different I’d urge you to give it a

go. CS

Times and Places

by Keith Anthony

£9.49

This lovely novel by Bucks-based

author Keith Anthony is a pageturning

adventure reminiscent of

The Life of Pi.

A decade after his daughter

Justine’s death, an anxious Fergus

embarks on a cruise with his wife.

On board, he meets a myriad

of characters and is entranced

by some, irritated by others

and disgusted by one. These

turbulent feelings, combined with

a sequence of bizarre events, only

increase his anxiety.

In a series of fl ashbacks, Justine

enjoys an ultimately short

romance; a woman concludes she

killed her; and an investigating

police offi cer is drawn into her

idyllic world. Fergus, haunted by

poignant memories, withdraws

in search of answers. Back on the

cruise he reaches breaking point,

fearing he has done something

terrible. By the time the ship

returns, his world has changed

forever.

Times and Places spans Atlantic

islands, the Chiltern countryside,

Cornish coasts and rural Slovenia.

SUN

SAFETY

It’s essential to protect your Skin

and your hair in the the sun. Here’s

our guide on howto stay safe

Every day, 42 new cases of melanoma are

diagnosed in the UK – that’s almost 16,000

every year – and the fi gure is rising, according

to Cancer Research UK. However, almost 86%

of those cases are deemed preventable, which means

there’s a lot we can do to help ourselves.

Unfortunately, with vitamin D a complicating factor,

the sun-safe advice has become confusing. We need

to get enough sunlight without sun cream to replenish

our vitamin D resources, but we must always use

sunscreen.

How to strike the balance?

The truth is, a few minutes everyday without sun

cream during the UK summer is enough – less if

you’re fair skinned, more if you’re darker. The rest of

the time, it’s better to protect yourself.

With that in mind, we spoke to Dr Dev Shah,

consultant dermatologist at One Stop Doctors based

in Hemel Hempstead, for an authoritative guide to

protecting your skin properly in the sun.

What is melanoma and what causes it?

Melanoma is a skin cancer that arises from the

pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) found within

the upper layers of the skin. Melanocytes are quite

fragile cells and are there to protect us from sunlight

and prevent UV light causing damage to our cells. If

too much UV light is encountered, the melanocytes

cannot cope and they are themselves damaged,

and develop DNA mutations. Once cells develop

irreparable DNA damage, they grow abnormally

or in a cancerous way. They can bud off and spread

to various organs such as the lungs or brain and

ultimately lead to death.

The main risk factors for developing melanoma are:

● A very fair skin with light eyes or red hair

● Sunbed use (sunbeds are completely banned

in Brazil and Australia) or blistering episodes of

sunburn as a child

● High numbers of moles - usually more than 100 on

your whole body (count the number of moles on

one arm. If you have more than 11, you are likely

to have more than 100 on your body)

● A genetic predisposition or family history.

HEALTH SUN SAFETY

Sun cream: what quality and how often

to apply it?

We recognise that being outdoors in sunlight has

various health benefits (exercise/lower blood

pressure), so we want people to keep enjoying the

outdoors but to be sensible.

When we talk about protecting yourself from the

sun, sunscreen is one part of this process. We also

recommend wearing long-sleeved and appropriate

clothing, using a hat and avoiding the most intense

sunlight between 11am and 2pm.

When using a sunscreen it’s important to choose

a cream with an SPF of 30 or more with a five-star

UVA rating, or a symbol with UVA written within a

circle.

Sunscreen comes in many different forms. If you want

to look less shiny there are non-glossy matt creams,

while for a more moisturising suncream you should

go for oils.

The main mistake people make is the frequency of

application. Terms such as ‘24hr protection’ and ‘all

day long protection’ are misleading. If you’re in direct

sunlight, you should be reapplying your sunscreen

every one to two hours. If you’re exercising and

sweating or swimming you should be reapplying it

every half an hour.

Aim to cover your whole body so that the skin feels

‘tacky’; if you don’t put enough on don’t worry too

much - if you’re applying it frequently you’ll eventually

cover all of your skin.

When using a sunscreen you must consider it as a

‘sieve’. In other words it’s not a ‘block’, it’s more a

filter that still allows light through to the skin. Using

a sunscreen doesn’t mean you can stay out in direct

sunlight for an infinite amount of time.

Do all clothes protect you from the sun or

are some better than others?

If you hold your clothes up to the sun and you

can see light coming through, they are definitely

not protective. Thicker clothing is far better than

thin clothing. All clothing will offer some level of

protection, but this will be variable so sunscreen

should still be applied. You can buy clothing with an

SPF factor and this is often the best type of clothing

to fully protect your skin. Children especially need

full-body suits with hats that have an SPF 50 rating

when in intense direct sunlight, or swimming, in order

to protect their skin as they are unlikely to achieve full

protection with sunscreen alone.

In general we would recommend wearing longsleeved

loose clothing and trying to avoid the most

intense periods of sunlight between the hours of

11am and 2pm.

Is there a safe way to tan?

In a word, no. Unfortunately tanning means sun

damage, which may increase your risk of developing

@LivingMagazines /LivingMagazines Summer 2018 | 37

HEALTH SUN SAFETY

further skin cancer. It is also important to note that

tanning and sun exposure is the leading cause of

premature ageing of the skin.

The safest way to get a darker complexion and skin

tone is to use a spray-on tan. When you’ve achieved

the colour you want with a spray-on tan, you should

still use a high factor sunblock in direct sunlight.

What changes should you be aware of

in your skin, and what should you do if

you’re at all worried?

First, we recommend that people at least look at their

skin regularly. It’s important that people know what

their bodies look like at baseline. Look at your back

and buttocks, checking every nook and cranny so

you know what you’re starting off with – or get your

partner to help. This way, if you develop new moles

(or if moles are changing) you’ll know because you

knew what they looked like before.

We also recommend that people take photographs of

their bodies at baseline. Then they can refer back to

1340x96_Living_Magazine.pdf 1 11/04/2018 19:18

these photos every three to four months, specifically

looking out for new or changing moles.

These are the signs you should look out for:

A is for Asymmetry – moles that are asymmetrical

B is for Borders – scalloped or blurred

C is for multiple Colours – red, black, brown (two or

more colour types are worrying)

D is for Diameter (greater than 6mm)

E is for Evolution (itching, pain, growing).

HEALTH SUN SAFETY

It’s best to be checked by someone who regularly

treats skin cancer and understands how to

differentiate cancer from benign moles, without

always cutting the mole out. If moles suddenly

become itchy red or are painful or simply attract one’s

attention it’s wise to have them checked.

Finally, are there any other tips you can

offer?

There are some great apps that can help you keep

track of changes in your skin – but be aware of apps

that claim to diagnose melanoma as we feel there is

not enough evidence of safety surrounding these.

Instead, try one of the apps where you can document

Protect your

hair & scalp

Hair

Hair becomes dry and brittle in the sunshine, and if it’s

bleached or dyed the problem is compounded. But you

don’t want to slop a load of greasy stuff on your hair

when you’ve spent ages styling it:

● Wear a hat. Make sure it covers your hair or your

hair can be tucked inside

● Go for a hair protector that’s light

and easy to apply, such as Ultrasun

Daily UV Hair Protector, £22.44

from Gorgeous, or Bumble and

bumble Invisible Oil Heat UV

Protection Primer, £8 (stocked at

Open Hairdressers)

● If you’re going to be swimming, try a

waterproof hair protector such as Philip

Kingsley’s Swimcap, around £12.50 from M&S.

Scalp

If you have very short hair or wear it in a parting,

it’s all too easy to burn your scalp. A hat offers the

best protection, or wear hair slicked back with no

parting. Choose a special scalp protector such as

Malibu Scalp Protector SPF30, 50ml, £3.99.

Moisturise

If your hair’s already damaged, make sure you look

after it during the summer months. Use oils (argan oil is

excellent), masks, conditioners and treatments to stop

it drying out too much.

and encrypt images of your body to take to your

GARDENS

THROWN OPEN

Each year, the National Gardens Scheme sees a host of privately

owned gardens open to the public to raise money for charity. And

it’s not restricted to large, landscaped affairs – cottage gardens

and unpretentious plots participate too

There’s nothing more inspiring, for anyone

with an interest in gardening, than taking a

walk around other people’s gardens. And

the beauty of the National Gardens Scheme

(NGS) is that it gives us the chance to look at what

can be done in ‘ordinary’ gardens.

While there are some impressively large plots that

the public can visit, it’s also a chance to see smaller,

privately-owned gardens that don’t usually open to

the public, giving us some great ideas about what to

do with our own gardens.

The NGS not only gives garden enthusiasts a chance

to have a nosy around otherwise private gardens, it

also does a great job raising funds for a number of

very worthy charities. Last year, its 90th anniversary,

it donated £3m to charities including MacMillan

Cancer Support, Marie Curie and the National

Autistic Society to name just a few.

More than 3,600 gardens across Britain opened to

the public last year as part of the scheme and this

year there are even more. All summer, owners will

be opening their gates, engaging with visitors and

serving cake and other refreshments as well as selling

home-grown plants.

Make a date in your diary to pay a visit to a few of the

gardens opening locally, enjoy a lovely afternoon out,

treat yourself to a piece of homemade cake – and do

your bit for charity.

The cottage itself was once a 17th-century fever

OPEN GARDENS

Fancy opening your

garden? Find out if you

have what it takes…

While the NGS

is keen for

people to sign

up to open

their gardens for public visits,

there are criteria to be adhered

to – the scheme has a 90 year

reputation to maintain!

Herts County organiser Julie

Knight told us: ‘When looking for

new gardens to join the National

Garden Scheme, we look for

gardens of quality, character and

interest. You don’t have to have

multiple acres, a walled garden,

or a professionally-designed

garden to open for us – some

of the most popular gardens are

small suburban gardens where

visitors can relate to the size of

the space and can pick up ideas

that will translate easily to their

own garden.

‘We look for gardens that

display their owners’ passion

and enthusiasm for gardening,

gardens that overfl ow with

foliage and fl owers, that feature

interesting plants, planting

combinations, or planting design.’

If your family and friends think

you have a gorgeous garden,

then it’s likely other people will

think so too. Think about how

you might hold an open day and

consider questions such as:

● What time of year does your

garden looks its best?

● Is there good space for

visitors to park nearby?

● Do you have family, friends

and neighbours who would

help on the day?

● Could you offer tea and cake

to visitors as an extra way to

raise funds?

Julie explains that there are

various reasons why garden

owners choose to be involved:

‘We are the most signifi cant

charitable funder of nursing

charities in the country, and

many owners are motivated

by this: perhaps someone they

know has been helped by one

of our benefi ciary charities, or

following the loss of a close one

they want to support charities

who help others with the same

condition or illness.

‘The simple joy of sharing a

beautiful garden with others is

also a great driver. Our garden

visitors are almost universally

enthusiastic, interested, friendly,

and positive – they often want to

chat to the owner about plants

and growing techniques, so an

Open Day can be a wonderful

opportunity to meet fellow

gardeners and exchange tips!’

This chalk garden set in the Chilterns has a

steep sloping lawn that leads to a natural swimming

pond with aquatic plants. It’s also home to a number

of wildfl owers including native orchids. Shaped

borders hold a great variety of trees, shrubs and

perennials, plus there’s a lodge greenhouse and a

good collection of half-hardy plants in pots.

NEXT TO

GODLINESS

You might think your home is

sparkling – but how clean is it

really? Clare Swatman spoke to local

experts to get the low-down on how

to make your home spotless

Yes, we know you like to keep your house clean(ish).

But kids with muddy shoes, dogs with muddy paws,

and life’s general wear and tear mean that it’s hard

to keep on top of it. But even if your loo gleams

or your fl oor looks as though you could eat your dinner off

it, is it really as squeaky clean as it could be? We asked local

experts for their views. We hope you’re not easily shocked.

In the Kitchen

The kitchen is a place you need to keep spick and span for

reasons of hygiene – especially if you regularly prepare meat

and fi sh.

Floors

Be honest, how often do you clean your fl oors? Once a

day? Once a month? You need to make sure you mop them

at least once a week. Use warm or cold water rather than

boiling to make sure the antibac agent in your cleaning

product is still effective.

Bins

Just think of all the fl uid that gathers at the bottom of your

bin – ugh! It’s not just at the bottom, either, but round

@LivingMagazines /LivingMagazines Summer 2018 | 47

PROPERTY CLEANLINESS

the rim too, which means it’s very easy to transfer

bacteria to your hands. Clean thoroughly with

antibacterial cleaner every week, inside and out.

Tea towels/cloths

These are a breeding ground for bacteria, which will

then transfer to your dishes. Change them every day.

Cloths you use to wipe the surfaces are even worse;

kitchen sinks are filthy, and you can spread harmful

germs round the kitchen if you leave the cloths

hanging around. Change them every day and wash at a

high temperature.

Sponges

Bacteria thrive on heat and moisture, so sponges are

the perfect breeding ground. Disinfect and leave it

to dry after every use to kill the bacteria, and replace

them once a week minimum.

In the Bathroom

Bathrooms aren’t the cleanest places in the world.

But as long as you don’t clean your loo with your

toothbrush you should be OK, right?

Towels

Diane Gisbourne, who runs the Quality Ironing and

Dry Cleaning Service covering Berkhamsted, Tring

and Hemel Hempstead, says: ‘Remember, towels

don’t just remove water. When you dry yourself they

also remove dead skin cells which collect in the towel

fibres. When they’re wet they’re the perfect breeding

ground for bacteria and germs.

‘Towels need time to dry to prevent bacteria

breeding, which causes mould and mildew, so make

sure you hang them up after every use, and wash

them after every five uses.’

Loo

The loo needs a thorough clean once a week, and a

wipe with bleach and antibacterial spray every couple

of days. The brush will need cleaning regularly too –

pour bleach into your toilet bowl and stand it in there

for an hour.

In the Living room

Vaccuming round the sofa and wafting a duster round

might make it look clean, but there could be germs

lurking in surprising places.

Sofas and carpets

There’s no hard and fast rule about how often sofas

and carpets should be cleaned, but the more the

better to keep nasties and bacteria at bay.

‘I often hear myself saying “if it wasn’t for children and

pets I wouldn’t have a business,”’ says David Green,

who runs Berkhamsted Carpet Cleaning. ‘Most of

my regular customers have carpets and sofas cleaned

every 12 to 24 months depending whether or not

they have children.’

And it’s not just about the germs. ‘Carpet pile that

contains a lot of dirt and grit will get damaged by the

constant grinding at the fibres when it’s walked on,’

David adds. ‘A hot-water deep extraction clean will

wash out anything not reached by the vacuum cleaner.

It’s also a good idea to have a shoes-off policy.

‘With wool and cotton... it’s a good idea to apply an

effective stain protection such as Scotchguard.’

Curtains

Curtains attract dust and smells. You can wash

them at home but it’s best to get them cleaned

professionally every six months to keep them clean

and fresh.

In the Bedroom

Sheets

You might not want to think about it, but your bed

sheets will be full of sweat, bacteria and human skin

cells – a perfect breeding ground for dust mites and

their faeces. Ugh.

Change them once a week, minimum, and wash at

60°C. When you get up in the morning, pull your

covers back and give the mattress time to air, and

open the window to release moisture.

48 | Berkhamsted Living www.livingmags.info

PROPERTY CLEANLINESS

Duvets and pillows

Pillows and duvets are full of dust mites, skin cells and

bacteria, however clean they look. ‘Duvets and pillows

should be washed at least every two to three months,’

says Diane Gisbourne. ‘If your pillows aren’t regularly

cleaned almost a third of their weight can be in dust

mites, dead skin cells and bug droppings – yuck!

‘Air them regularly and have them professionally

cleaned every few months. They can be washed in a

washing machine but remember they’re much heavier

when wet.

‘Drying duvets and pillows in the sunlight will kill

micro-organisms. In the winter, run a warm iron over

them, which helps kill off any remaining bacteria once

they’re dry.’ ■

Review

Restaurant 23

Only open a year, Restaurant 23 on Tring High

Street already feels part of the town. It

specialises in fish but also offers plenty for

meat-eaters and vegetarians alike.

We were greeted by a smart and friendly

member of staff and taken to our table upstairs

in one of three intimate, cosy rooms. It had the

feel of a private dining room, with a fireplace

and comfy upholstered chairs. The carpeted

floors and low background music promoted

good conversation across the table.

I was impressed straightaway when we were

offered a carafe of tap water. The menu

reinforced that first impression: there was the

standard menu as well as specials, and we

decided to try something from each. I went for

the pea soup, followed by the megrim sole and

chocolate ganache, while my wife opted for the

grilled Cornish mackerel, the ‘due’ of pork and

the ganache again.

The mackerel was delicious and totally bonefree

(as the waiter had promised); the flesh was

soft and it wasn’t at all oily. The mango on the

side was a nice touch. My soup was a gorgeous

deep green and full of flavour, and the

accompanying bread was divine.

Sheila’s pork was beautifully presented and

served with perfectly cooked al dente

asparagus. My sole, with a delicious parmesan

crust, came with spinach and fondant potato.

The rich chocolate ganache was perfectly

complemented by a sharp orange and Campari

sorbet – very moreish!

We drank an excellent New Zealand

sauvignon blanc that went well with the food

and was very reasonably priced.

Sheila has already booked again, and I plan to

take friends there next month – we really

were impressed. R23 makes an excellent

addition to the choice of eateries in both

Berkhamsted and Tring. GTE
