NEWS

LETTER

EDGE Services

are thrilled to have

been awarded UK

Employer of the Year:

Silver (2-49) in

The Investors in

People Awards 2024.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that we are winners at the Investors in People Awards being

awarded the Employer of the Year: Silver category.

This is incredible recognition for all the EDGE Services team and the dedication behind the scenes to make

EDGE a great place to work and develop.

In June this year it was confirmed that Edge Services had been identified as one of the Top 20 Silver two to

49 Investors in People accredited employers in the UK.

We were then invited to submit an entry for The Award for UK Employer of the Year in The Investors in

People Awards 2024.

The Investors in People Awards 2024 was a culmination of over 300 entries from 200 organisations across

15 countries to celebrate the pinnacle of excellence in organisational development and people management.

During the application process we were able to highlight the development and progress made during recent

years and the Investors in People framework gave structure to this.

We are immensely proud of the award and what it represents for everyone at EDGE Services. As well a

huge achievement, it is also fantastic opportunity to continue to grow and develop.

A huge thank you to the team at EDGE Services and everyone who has supported us.

NEWS

Hello and welcome to our Winter 2024 newsletter.

We close on another fantastic year. I am hugely proud of EDGE Services winning Employer of the

Year: Silver (2-49) in The Investors in People Awards 2024. For many reasons I believe this is a truly

great achievement, one achieved together as a TEAM.

Back in 2021 RAH Group went with a gut feeling to buy EDGE Services....why? mainly because of

the people already within the company, each one amazing and with so much untapped energy that

we believed could flourish.

We were also thrilled to win awards at the RoSPA Qualifications Event in July. And we’ve been out

and about at conferences and events throughout the year, either as attending delegates or exhibiting.

You can see our trainers’ reviews of both the National Back Exchange Conference attended in

September and November’s OT Show on pages 10 and 11 of this newsletter. We were also excited

to once again exhibit at the OT Show, and it was great to speak to so many of you. See page 3 for

further details.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish our Buisness Development and Communications

Manager Bethany King the very best wishes for the furture as she leaves Edge to go travelling with

her husband. Thank you for all your support and have a fantasic adventure!

It has been quite a journey over the last three years, congratulations everyone at Team Edge.

This is reward for you all WINNERS!

Thank you to eveyone who has supported EDGE Services during 2024, we look forward to working

with you all in 2025.

Happy New Year!

Xmas Presence 2024

EDGE Services are

delighted to support

‘Xmas Presence’

again this year!

This wonderful

community project in

York has spent the

past few years helping

to alleviate the sadness of older people who find

themselves alone at Christmas time, by providing

transport, a roast dinner and refreshments,

entertainment, presents and good company for people on

Christmas Day.

The Xmas Presence team do this completely free of

charge via donations and volunteers and they need help

to make it work, and we will again be making a donation

this year.

The Xmas Presence project has inspired other

community groups and care businesses to run their own

festive events for elderly people who would otherwise be

alone on Christmas Day – and we hope to see its reach

grow across the UK because, as the team say, no-one

should have no-one.

Information about how to donate or help can be provided

by contacting the Xmas Presence team:

Dementia in the UK

Dementia numbers hit record high – here’s the warning

signs you need to know

England has one of the highest dementia diagnosis

rates in the world. A timely diagnosis is vital to ensure

more people get the support and care they need to live

with the illness.

The country has one of the highest dementia diagnosis

rates in the world, with 65% of the total number of

people estimated to be living with a form of the disease

currently diagnosed (for most high-income countries,

the diagnosis rate is 20-25%).

Dementia is an umbrella term for progressive conditions

associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, and a timely

diagnosis is vital.

Dr Jeremy Isaacs, national clinical director for

dementia, NHS England, said: “Thousands more

individuals are being diagnosed each month and more

medication reviews are being done within 12 months. If

you have noticed that someone has symptoms, please

encourage them to visit their GP for an assessment –

the sooner someone is seen, the quicker the NHS can

help.”

What are the warning signs of dementia?

1. Mood changes

According to the NHS, dementia is not a natural part of

ageing and there are other symptoms people should

keep in mind, including the change in mood.

But people may not identify these symptoms right

away, and family and friends may not notice or take

them seriously for some time. In some people, these

symptoms will remain the same and not worsen. Others

with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) will go on to

develop dementia.

2. Finding it hard to learn new things

Dr Tim Beanland, head of knowledge at Alzheimer’s

Society, said: “If I got a new piece of tech or kit, it might

take me a long time to set it up, but I think I’d get there

by following the instructions. But if you’ve got dementia,

learning how to use a new appliance or device is really

difficult.”

3. Repeated questioning

For example, if your partner tells you they’re going out in

the evening but you forget what time they said they were

coming back, that’s probably nothing to worry about. But

if you’ve got dementia, you probably won’t remember

something somebody told you five or 10 minutes ago,

and you might ask them with repeat questioning,” said

Beanland.

“For a family member it can be quite annoying –

obviously it’s not the person with dementia’s fault, but

they may ask you the same question over and over. That

is suggestive of a problem which might be dementia and

is the kind of thing I would go to the doctor about.”

4. Putting objects in strange places

“Forgetting where you have put your keys or mobile

phone is fine. But when you have dementia, it’s common

to put things in strange places,” said Beanland. “You

might put your house keys in your bathroom cabinet, for

example. It’s a bit weird, but it’s the kind of thing people

with dementia might do.”

5. Difficulty with organisation

Organising yourself on some occasions can be difficult,

especially as you get older. This could also mean that

it takes longer to manage the budget or pay bills, for

example. “But if you’ve got dementia, people really

struggle, losing the ability to be organised and plan

ahead,” said Beanland.

However, it’s important to keep in mind what’s always

been ‘normal’ for you – because it’s more about spotting

changes. “If you’ve always been rubbish with the bills or

have never had a good memory, you’re not going to get

better as you get older, but it’s normal for you,” noted

Beanland.

6. Struggling with daily life

If you’ve got dementia, your symptoms will mean you

struggle with day-to-day life, Beanland stressed.

“It’s that change from normal into these symptoms which

get in the way of daily life, so you struggle to have a

conversation and to organise things, you struggle to

remember where you’ve parked the car, things like that,”

he explained. “These are not just annoyances; they can

really affect your ability to get on and do things.”

Our new two day Dementia Care Key Trainers Certificate course will provide you with the

understanding, knowledge, and effective strategies to train staff working with people with Dementia, to

reduce the impact of the challenges faced upon the individual and the carers and improve the quality of

life of those with dementia. For further details please get in touch or visit the website.

Patient Safety this Winter

Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting has

asked NHS leaders to prioritise patient safety as the

health service battles record pressures heading into

winter.

Latest data shows the NHS is going into winter under

more strain than ever before, with record numbers

of people in hospital and over four times more flu

admissions at the end of November compared to the

same time last year.

Mr Streeting told NHS leaders he does not want to

see trusts prioritising patients who can be seen and

discharged more quickly over those with the greatest

clinical need.

Instead, he wants a focus on improving emergency

ambulance response times, addressing handover delays

and tackling the longest waits in A&E - putting patients

ahead of targets.

Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting said:

“We inherited a broken NHS that saw annual winter

crisis as the norm. This year, we’re seeing record

pressures on services as we move into December.

“This winter I want to see patient safety prioritised as

we brace ourselves for the coming months. I’m asking

trusts to focus on ambulance delays, handovers and the

longest A&E waits.

“We’ve already taken immediate action to keep patients

safe by ending strikes – meaning this is the first winter in

three years without staff on the picket line.

“This government’s Plan for Change sets out our work to

bring down waiting lists, alongside the 10 Year Health Plan

that will deliver fundamental reform to build an NHS that is

there for us all year round.

“And I’d appeal to all eligible people to join the 27 million

who have already protected themselves and the NHS and

get vaccinated. “

Prime Minister Keir Starmer set out the government’s Plan

for Change, which includes the priority mission of tackling

waiting lists to help reduce pressures on the wider health

system.

Reducing the elective waiting list of over 7.5 million will

allow the government to deliver on its ambitions for long

term reform, give people the care they need, when they

need it, and lay the foundations of a sustainable health

system - including in A&E.

It will also help get people back to work across the country

and over time reduce pressures on the wider health

service.

Conference Review

National Back Exchange - Birmingham

15th, 16th & 17th September 2024

Back to the Future - Unlocking Potential

The conference this year started on a sombre note

following the passing of Simon Love, observing a

minutes silence to remember him and his achievements.

Following this, the first speaker, Dr T was uplifting and

engaging, gaining the attention of all the delegates

with his session “Unlocking your genius” demonstrating

how to improve memory, introducing ideas such as the

clothes peg method which was very effecive allowing

recall days later - certainly an achievement!

There followed an enjoyable session from Seating

Matters highlighting the importance of correct seating

and how often in the care settings this can be missing

which impacts hugely on patients both physically and

psychologically. The session benefited from real life

examples which clearly demonstrated how a correctly

fitting chair can make so much difference not just to

reducing incidents of pressure damage but to the quality

of life in so many areas.

One of the beneficial workshops attended was entitled

“The falling person, let’s discuss”. It was interesting and

informative looking back at acceptable techniques over

the years, it is always supportive to see that techniques

taught by EDGE Services are in line with professional

guidance and how to discuss this high risk situation

during training.

A favourite workshop took place on day 2 led by Pat

O’Brien, a Physio who has designed the pobroll, a gentler

alternative to restrictive holding when delivering personal

care to a non-consenting individual. This is two large terry

towelling sheets with a waterproof layer inside in which

the patient is cocooned but still has enough room to move

about in enabling carers to give a thorough bed bath with

the patient’s dignity kept intact and the patient feeling

warm throughout the process. The pobroll itself is not

dissimilar to a weighted blanket which would be beneficial

especially to people living with dementia. A simple but

effective device retailing at £260 +vat.

There was plenty of opportunity to explore the exhibition

hall. One piece of equipment that stood out was

the Molift Transfer Pro similar to the Arjo Stedy and

Mackworth 180 but with a SWL of 200kg. The central

locking system was particularly interesting and the foot

platform was sloped downwards making it easy for

foot placement. It is light to manoeuvre and it would be

compatible with the molift assist belt for extra support.

Another thought provoking workshop discussed hoisting

from the floor and the options when flat lifting can be

a safer option, as injuries can be easily missed in the

fallen person. The session included a practical element

demonstrating use of slide sheets to enable a person to

be slid onto a hover mat.

The workshop led by Beth Hallows looked at person

-centred, balanced manual handling risk assessment.

This was highly thought provoking and included practical

scenarios.

OT SHOW - Birmingham

27th - 28th November 2024

The OT show is a great opportunity for occupational

therapists to learn about new products that could support

individuals with their manual handling needs.

We were impressed by the new Walk Safe walking aid

developed by NRS, in collaboration with the University

of Salford. The front swivel castors have a magnetic

connection to maintain a straight-line direction of travel.

The device rotates easily allowing for users to turn

without lifting it. The device has handles which facilitates

standing by pushing down on the frame.

Hospital Direct has added a product to the satin in-bed

system (SIBA). The new satin top sheet has straps to

attach to the frame of the bed at the head end to keep

the top sheet in place when the bed is profiled. It helps to

prevent the client from sliding down the bed. They also

introduced the Transfer Board Slide, which is a washable

tubular slide sheet with a piece of non-slip material

that can be used on a transfer board to assist with the

transfer, and a 30° wedge for positioning to support with

pressure management.

Arjo has produced a smaller version of the Stedy, the

Sara Stedy Compact. The footprint is the same as the

original, but it is configured for smaller clients (up to 5.8”)

with a lower shin pad, lower seat paddles and a shorter

reach for the crossbar handle to stand up.

Care and Independence introduced a foot sling to help

manage the client’s legs/heels whilst they are hoisted.

In addition to trialling new and innovative products,

the OT Show is a great networking opportunity. The

sessions and practical workshops help to update and

refresh knowledge and skills. Caroline Robinson from

Essex County Council gave an interesting talk on falls in

care homes addressing blanket policies and improving

practice. The session discussed the importance

of understanding the effect of long-lie (prolonged

immobilisation) which can result in the client developing

rhabdomyolysis. It was interesting to learn the impact of

caffeine intake on falls as well.

Kirsty O’Connor from Seating Matters spoke about the

unique challenges when assessing for a seating solution

for a plus size client. The importance of recognising

that the client might have a unique set of fears; fear that

the equipment will not be strong enough, fear that they

might slide out of the chair, or the fear of having difficulty

breathing if they not positioned properly.
